Okay, sufficient interest was shown over in the other thread for me to organise another tournament towards the end of the year.
Platinum Devil 2 is scheduled for the 18th and 19th of December, at the University of Kent in Canterbury.
Schedule
Saturday
9:30-10:00 - Registration/ Introductions
10:00 -11:00 - Game 1 -500 points Combat Patrol
Mission: Victory Points
Add the points value of whatever you have left on the table to the points value of what your opponents has lost. Add the two together. Then compare the score to your opponents:-
If you have a total of more than 150 more than your opponent: Victory to you
If you have a total of less than 150 below your opponent, you lose.
If you and your opponents scores are within 150 points of each other, the game is a tie.
15 minute break
11:15 -12:45 - Game 2 - 1000 points
Mission: Assassination, Table Quarters
Counts as a standard Annihilation mission, except that HQ choices are worth 3 Kill points, and Elites and Heavy Support Choices 2 Kill Points
45 minute lunch break
1:30- 3:00 - Game 3 - 1000 points
Mission: Seize Ground, Pitched Battle
15 min break
3:15 -5:00 - Game 4 - 1250 points
Mission: Attrition, Table Quarters
This is a kill points based mission. Only troops choices and their dedicated transports are worth kill points. HQ, Elites, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support are not. If a troops choice is killed, it re-enters play at the start of the owning players next turn. The player may choose to bring the unit on at any point along either of the table sides they initially used for deployment. (to clarify this now, in table quarters, you may only use half of each side of the table when deploying. However, when units are re-entering play, they may use the full length of that side of the table). All dedicated transports belonging to a troops choice automatically explode when they receive a 'wrecked' result on the vehicle damage chart.
If you have a Webway portal or Trygon tunnel on the table, your troops may enter play through that instead.
If the squad has a drop pod/mycetic spore, they may only re-enter play with it if the Pod/Spore is destroyed in the same turn. However, Drop Pods and Mycetic Spores do not re-enter play unless the squad that took them is also destroyed, and the squad opts to re-enter play using them.
If a squad has the Deep Strike special rule, they may use that instead.
If a Hades Drill emerges via deep strike, the hole it leaves behind counts as a table edge from that point onwards for the purpose of Engineer Squads or other Hades Breaching Drills. If a Hades Breaching Drill is destroyed, it must re-enter play in an identical way to a troops choice (so it may deep strike again, emerge from a hole already made, or come on from a table side). However, for the second time, it does not need an Engineer squad to be following it.
20 min break
5:20-5:40 - Warhammer 40K bonus quiz!
[b]Sunday
9:30-10:30 - 500 points Combat Patrol
Mission: Victory Points
Add the points value of whatever you have left on the table to the points value of what your opponents has lost. Add the two together. Then compare the score to your opponents:-
If you have a total of more than 150 more than your opponent: Victory to you
If you have a total of less than 150 below your opponent, you lose.
If you and your opponents scores are within 150 points of each other, the game is a tie.
15 min break
10:45-12:30 - 1250 points
Mission: Portal, Table Halves
There are 4 beacons placed on the table by the judges(one in each quarter). Each counts as a holdable objective, and to win a player must control more beacons than his opponent(if they hold the same number, the game is a draw). As a holdable objective, a beacon is contested if there is an enemy unit within 3” of it. Only Troops options may claim objectives. Each beacon has the number 2,3,4, or 5 on the underside. If a model from a non-vehicle unit(except for walkers) moves into base contact with a Beacon, they may choose to activate it. Roll a D6 and apply the following effect:
1:-The unit is lost in the warp and removed from the game
2-5:-Place the unit in base contact with the beacon of the correct corresponding number. If you roll the number of the beacon you just activated, you may choose which beacon to emerge from.
6:-Deep strike the unit to anywhere on the table.
A unit may assault the turn it exits a portal, providing there is a target within range, but does not receive any assault bonuses (so no +1 attack, Furious charge is negated, etc). If a Portal is completely surrounded by models, so that there is no space for a newly teleported unit to be placed, then the surrounding squad must be moved the minimum necessary amount to accommodate the newly teleported squad having a minimum of 1 model placed in base contact with the portal, with the rest of the squad maintaining squad coherency.
Hour lunch break
1:30-3:15 - 1250 points
Mission: Bombardment, Table Halves
There are three objectives placed on each table by the Judge. The winner must hold more objectives than his opponent, to tie on the number held is a draw, to have less is a loss. At the start of each players turn, they receive a single Artillery Bombardment for each objective held by their opponent, to be used at the start of their movement phase. Each Artillery Bombardment has the following profile:-
Range:- Unlimited Strength: 8 AP: 3 Type: Ordnance 1/Barrage
3:15 onwards - Whatever you guys want to do!
[b]Scoring
Nice and simple. 3 points for a Victory, 2 for a draw, 1 for a Loss.
Escalation-Here's how it works!
So when writing out your army list, write out a 500 point list. Standard force chart is modified slightly here, you only need a minmum of 1 Troops choice. However, you cannot take more than 1 each of the HQ, Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support slot, or more than 3 troops choices overall.
Then you need to write out your 1000 point list. But here's the catch:- The first 500 points is the 500 points you took for combat patrol. None of those units can be taken out or modified in any way. You cannot upgrade any of the units that were in the original 500 points in any way(so adding weapons, sergeants, etc). The one exception to this is allowing units to purchase dedicated transports. The remaining 500 points must be selected in accordance with the standard force organization chart. In other words, if you only had 1 troops and no HQ choice in your original 500 points, you would now need to purchase them as a minimum.
Then, when writing out your 1250 points list, you add another 250 points worth of units, in accordance with the same restrictions placed when upgrading from 500 to 1000.
You don't need to send me an army list, this is a casual tournament, however, you will be expected to have one on hand to show to your opponent.
Scenario's will published along with the Sunday schedule. Expect to see some of the old favourites making a comeback, and a few new ones!
At the moment, we're looking at a maximum capacity of 24 people. Only Dakkaites may technically take part, however, if you have some friends that want to come, if they're prepared to spend 5 minutes setting up a Dakka account, they're in!
There will be a fee of £6 per entry, as of last time. This allows terrain to be bought and painted, and possibly some prizes this time as well. This needs to be paid in advance by Paypal to Necrofood@hotmail.com
When you make the payment, include your actual name and Dakka username as a note. I'd appreciate it as well if it could be sent as a 'household expense', otherwise Paypal likes to take a cut of about 60-70 pence.
I'd also appreciate PMing me through your Dakka account as well to let me know you've made the payment.
The last winner of Platinum Devil was Panic, who hopefully, will be in attendance this time as well! Let's see if he can defend his title as Dakka's Platinum Devil...
Fandexes, chapter approved, and Imperial Armour lists are permissable, providing I've examined them beforehand. So contact me if there's one you want to use not listed here:-
Currently usable:-All Forgeworld publications, the 5th Edition Kroot List( PM for a link to download).
However!-No flyers may be used. The flyer rules simply complicate games, and I'd prefer to keep this nice and smooth running.
People entered:-
-Ketara/Ben
-Reds8n/Mike
-Snarky/Ian W
-Killkrazy/Richard
-ArbitorIan/Ian G
-SilverMK2/Nathan
-notprop/Nick
-ChrisWWII/Chris
-Tek/ Matt
-the_mcleod/Chris M
-RinkyDink/Mark
-Simon (Ben's friend, along to even out the numbers and the fact ChrisWWII is leaving after a day)
In exchange for his generosity in allowing me to use his name to help book a room(I'd be looking at a £100 deposit), and helping out on the catering aspect of things, Reds8n does, of course, get free entry.
The last Platinum Devil summary can be seen here:- http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/289376.page
Any questions, feel free to ask.
Any discussion on what points or scenarios you'd like to see used, or anything else, discuss here!
The location is the Missing Link Building at the University of Kent, between Darwin Block, CT2 7NY.

So to get entered we just need to send you the money via paypal?
Also, i'll be bringing elysians as per IA8;
Is it ok to bring flying units (i.e thunderbolt) as listed in the IA8 list? Since I know that some people may have problems dealing with flyers (due to their rules).
11029
Post by: Ketara
Essentially yes.
I did specify however, nothing that use the IA flyers rule, it just complicates things infinitely, as it's an addition to the main rules-set. Since not everyone owns imperial armour, it would be unfair to suddenly make them have to play with main rules they've never seen before.

I know this one hasn't happened yet...but when is your next one?
I'm at Canterbury Christ Church (1st year...), and really want to go to some 40k Tournaments, and have only been too one, at my local club in Norwich, and i didn't even use my own army.....But i won't be in Canterbury for this one, because i will be back home :(

Well, there's the standard Valkyrie's/Vendettas.
Rodgers, I haven't got another scheduled right now, although I'm roughly planning on holding another one sometime in May next year.

Umm.. what do I do about the paypal fee of 0.40p?
I checked the "Gift" box and it still wants the fee, any ideas how to get around this?
11029
Post by: Ketara
Does it? In that case, don't worry about it, I thought the gift option avoided the fee. If it doesn't, there's not a whole lot we can do.
32303
Post by: Snarky
Well, it is only 0.40p, so i'll pay that. Anyway money has been sent.
One more question, are there any restrictions regarding unbased models? I've left my valk flying bases unbased for ease of transport/ placing troops on it to represent it carrying troops.

Post by: Ketara
To be honest, I don't even care if your army is fully painted or not, let alone based. This is a casual tournament, between fellow Dakkaites, and whilst it would be nice if everything was done perfectly, I'm not going to start issuing guidelines on how much modelling should be done. I recognise some of the older chaps pin down full time jobs, and might not get as much time to paint and base as they might otherwise like.
Having said that, just about every army was painted and based last time, so it seems that most people's modeller's pride will dictate them.

Post by: Kilkrazy
I deliberately use the threat of the impending tournament to force myself to build and paint some models.

I am a definite.
1) I hope to bring a Tyrant's Legion list from IA9. Gonna get started on converting my Astral Claws Retaliators tonight, and I've already made a start on some other things. Also just made a few EBay purchases that will make awesome Auxilia, Armsmen and Marauders.
2) If I can't do that, I might make a low model-count Lamenters jump-pack deep-striker list, but although there would be fewer models, the painting would be harder, so maybe not...
3) Failing that, I already have well over 1500 points of painted Eldar.

I will probably be attending. Unless there is a strong reason for me to do otherwise I will probably be bringing my CSM. I will wait until the wife decides when she is on holiday (which hopefully will not be too long now) before sending over the cash If Tek is coming and we are doing doubles or something on the Sunday, I could be persuaded to bring my Eldar instead and partner with him (assuming he wants to partner with me anyway ) - though that would mean painting pretty much my entire Eldar army and learning all the rules I hope to see everyone there.
7107
Post by: Tek
^Silver I'm down with that dude! I'll be bringing a flimsy fast list with Vypers, Warp Spiders and other such silliness. I don't play competetively so I'm going to be fielding the models no-one else dares
Learning the rules for Eldar is easy. Move quick, stab people in the back
17349
Post by: SilverMK2
In that case I'd better get painting
I will be taking Banshees and Harlies, some shining spears and... well... I have no idea
I will have a look at the models I have and see what list I can come up with in the 1,000-1,500 point range.

I'm in - I'll send over the money ASAP. Depending on what's finished I'll either go with...
- Squats ( IG) with some IA drilling equipment
- Harlequins from the 3ed PDF
- Tau with some fancy XV9 Hazard Suits Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, to clarify, are we allowed to bring super-heavies? I'd imagine these come under the same deal as flyers - too complicated...?

Post by: Ketara
If you want to use a super-heavy, tell me which one, and where the rules are. I may make one or two minor adjustments, in regards of points costs, or slots occupied, but I don't see why not.

Lots of places to stay, possibly even including Campus if Kent lets out halls during holidays like Loughborough does? As for hotels in town, there are lots, as it is a popular tourist destination, but I don't know what that will do to prices as Canterbury Town Centre gets very busy during Christmas. Not sure if that is mainly day-trippers or lots of people holidaying in the area.
Personally, I'll either stay with my Parents or Aunt and Uncle, but sadly I can't extend that invitation to others.

There are various hotels.

Last time I stayed in the Falstaff which is 600 years old or something. Not too bad though they didn't have their restaurant open in the evenings. It is on the edge of town and has car parking, but is within five minutes walk of the Cathedral.

It depends how much money you want to spend.
I am going to book at the Falstaff again because the town seems to be filling up a bit already, and I was satisfied with them last time.

I just had a thought. In the midst of making myself an objective marker out of an unneeded Space Wolves Lightning Claw, I thought to myself "Hey, I could give this to someone at the Platinum Devil!"
May I suggest that we consider making objective markers to give each other. Not compulsory, but for those who have the time and inclination to do it?
Maybe instead of giving them away, we could bring them along, use them, and then play swapsies afterwards?
I am going to try and make a handful, themed vaguely along the lines of "broken marine equipment".

That gives us 5 people entered for definite so far. If Fifty, Tek, and SilverMK2 all decide to come, we'll have hit our minimum number before we start looking further afield.
I'd like to hold doubles games, but to be frank, there's guarantee the number we end up with will be a multiple of 4. If we end up with say, 10 or 11 players, it won't quite work.

Pretty certain I can come too. My better half took a while to convince, but, it seems I'm in the clear! - Probably cost me a lot in Chrimbo prezzies though.
I wanted to bring DE, but i'm not sure I'll get them painted up in time, so it looks as if it'll be SM again. (2,500pts worth now, all to gaming standard! Huzzah!)
So if anyone wants to double up in a imperial vs. whoever, then I'm game!

Good point - surely it would confuse the scoring also?

Hmm...excellent point there Ian, people might get a bit annoyed if they get a bad pairing matchup, and lose as a result. I think for scoring games, I'll keep it as singles.

Do a doubles game or an Apoc game for people who want to play it as a post-comp "fun" game.
I've never played Apoc because I won't pay £30 for the rules, but I would give it a go. I might even be enthused to build my M61A5.

I think I will have to bring 2 armies - my CSM to actually play with and my Eldar for the Sunday to have a go with.

If there is a doubles apocalypse game on the second day, is there any chance of having a narrative story for the first day battles? (I mean after we've sorted what armies we have).
Like in many IA books, the battles on the first day can be used to award strategic assets on the apocalypse game the following day.
[i.e. Battle 1 on day 1 awards the Strategic Redeployment strategic asset to the winner for use in the apocalypse game, a draw means no asset is awarded.]
[i.e.2 The narrative story behind it could be that two armies are fighting for a sensor relay or an orbital beacon essential to the assault/defence of the planet]
This way, we can have a sort of pseudo-campaign with a narrative story and a sort of final last stand battle as an apocalypse game.

I wouldn'y worry about that disty, I hadn't played 5th Ed before the Silver Socrerer event (since 2nd ed!) and got on fine, thanks to the cool people of dakka.
It did show though as I finished 2nd [from last].

Snarky, to be frank, I'm actually leaning away from the idea of any sort of complications right now, simply because they are just that. Complications. One of the reasons it ran so smoothly before, I think, was because it was so basic and simple. For example the scoring system was:
Win=3 points
Draw=2 points
Loss=1 point.
At the moment, my thoughts are thus.
Day 1
Game 1=500 points combat patrol
Game 2=1000 points
Game 3=1000 points
Game 4=1250 points
Day 2
Game 1=500 points Combat Patrol
Game 2=1250 points
Game 3=1250 points
Then whatever people feel like doing afterwards, as it should be about 3 o'clock. That's time enough for people to squeeze in a large doubles game if they want.
I'd like to hold a 40K trivia quiz over one of the lunches, with a few bonus points up for grabs possibly.
Those are my current inclinations. Nice and simple.

Once I've got confirmation, I'll be able to pay. I'll be bringing IG, and assuming Sunday uses Apoc rules (crosses fingers and hopes) I'll be bringing down at least one Baneblade.

I see no reason why not, on the following basis:-
-The Chimera entry is removed, and you must use the one listed in the Imperial Guard codex.
-Suppression Shields are downgraded from a 4+ Invulnerable save to a 5+.
-If you want to use a Repressor, you need to bring along Imperial Armour II.
-The Sentinel entry is removed, and you may choose either the regular Sentinel or Armoured Sentinel options from the Imperial Guard Codex instead.
-Cyberhounds do not prevent enemies from outflanking.
If you're happy with those modifications, go to town.
8049
Post by: ArbitorIan
Cool - i might well do - I'll see if I can build a decent force out of that codex and what I've got.
- I don't have any Chimeras - I'll be using Rhinos/Repressors
- I'll bring the IA2 Repressor rules
- I won't be using any Sentinels
Query the Supression Shield thing, though - in both the WH and DH codexes, regular human supression shields are 4+ (Crusader). I don't think there have been any 5+ ones since some much older Marine codices.
Anyway, let's see if I can build an army - if those are all the restrictions, it should be fine...

I'm just not too big on a 13 point model with WS 4, and 2 attacks(shield counts as combat weapon), that are poisoned, and has a bolt pistol and, on top of all that, having a 4+ invulnerable. I just think it's a spot broken, so I'm lowering the invulnerable save to balance it out a spot.

All paid now. Looking forward to it. Still don't have a list together but rest assured it'll be sweet.
How's the format gonna work with games exactly? I understand how to build my list(s), but unsure how the order or service goes...
ie who plays game 1, game 2 etc? Sorry for being a tourney noob...
11029
Post by: Ketara
Basically, like with with last time, matchups will be determined by me, the tourney organiser. For the first round, I pair everyone up randomly. After that, I pair off the highest scorers for games. If you've already played the person with the closest score to your own, you'll play the person with the next most similar score who you haven't yet faced.

To be honest with you I have issues with the army lists format, especially the way the 500- 1000 points scales.
from my existing list I can choose my troops... and that's it for combat patrol. Wow.. great.. that'll be exciting.
I'd much rather people just had to have a 500 point list, and then -- same army even -- a 1000 point list and then a 1250 one.
well, actually I'd rather not play 500 point games at all ; I don't find them fun at all and, frankly, neither the current rules of codices are really suited for that level.

Post by: Tek
Ketara - Thanks buddy. Sounds cool.
I've played a few 500pt games before, and I found them to be OK red. I guess it's a matter of taste - I guess at the very least they should be quick?

Not hugely keen on escalation matches but I think one where you have to keep the same choices is a bit more interesting and will lead to some unusual lists that people might not otherwise use.

Escalation doesn't work for Tyranids because they don't have any synapse creatures who are single wound models.
The entire army in Combat Patrol will operate under Instinctive Behaviour rules which more or less means the player isn't playing.
The one exception is Genestealers, which don't have instinctive behaviour, however it is very limiting to make 500 points of a 1,250 army as Genestealers. They don't have any shooting, for example.
So I have to say Nay unless some special exception can be made for Tyranids.
11029
Post by: Ketara
If I recall, Warriors can be used, as 2 wounds are allowed. Generally, combat patrol is no 2+ saves, no more than 2 wounds, and no armour value more than 33 combined.
299
Post by: Kilkrazy
I'll check the exact rules then.
7107
Post by: Tek
Is that front armour combined?
Also I'm not sure if I like the idea of building on the previous list untouched. I don't mind sticking to the same units for each list, but if we could re-gear each squad for each new list I'd be happier. For instance buying a PF or a lascannon or something.
8049
Post by: ArbitorIan
All armour combined on a single vehicle.
So, a Rhino has a combined AV of 32 (11, 11, 10)
But a Land Raider has 42 (14, 14, 14)
299
Post by: Kilkrazy
Warriors have three wounds.
if the rule is two wounds I am stuck with a poor selection of units.
Biovore, Pyrovore, Zoeanthrope, Venomthrope, Tyrant Guard all have two wounds. Only the Zoe is a Synapse creature.
The Combat Patrol rules were in 4th weren't they? Any chance of a "summary"being circulated? My 4th edition rulebook is in Japan.

So wait....are we using the Combat Patrol rules only, or are we using the additional rules Ketara posted earlier for the 500 pts game?
299
Post by: Kilkrazy
Ketara's Combat Patrol rules are the same as the 4th edition Combat Patrol rules.
My concern is that 5th edition Tyranids don't really work in Combat Patrol.
I don't think I can even create a legal Combat Patrol 500 list without just using buckets full of Termagants and Hormagaunts.
There's only one unit in the Tyranid Codex which is Synapse and under 3 W -- the Zoanthrope. I can take one Brood of them as my Elite slot, which means I will have two Zoes. Kill them and the army falls apart.
I won't be able to take any MCs or HQ, which stops me from taking any more Elites.
Then I need to take 76 Gants for my troops. I can't take a Tervigon in Troops because it is a 6W creature.
I only want to take about 20-30 Gants in my army, because my other units -- none of which I can use in Combat Patrol -- are so expensive that I can't spare a lot of points for Gants.
I don't have anywhere near enough Gants to make up the numbers.
To make it clear, while I think the idea is good and fun, it seems difficult to make it work with the Tyranid codex, because they don't have any vehicles and very few support weapons except on 3+ W creatures.

I wouldn't mind so much fielding a horde of Instinctive creatures as long as
A. It is bigger than 500 points, to reflect that fact that it will not be commanded.
It might be quite amusing for everyone to have to fight off a "combat patrol" consisting of about 100 minor Tyranid creatures.
B. I don't have to use the same horde in my proper army.
5478
Post by: Panic
yeah,
I like the escalation Idea. but,
I don't think we need to apply the combat patrol rules.
If at 1000pts and 1250pts we have to use the same units exactly as already used in the previous round, the first 500pts choices will already be quiet limited...
Also the first game could be at 750pts?
Panic...
8049
Post by: ArbitorIan
That's actually quite a good point. If the escalation idea is generally favoured (as it looks like it is), then using Combat Patrol rules only complicates things.
Could we keep Escalation, start at a low points value like 500 or 750, but just do away with the Combat Patrol thing? So just a general 500/750pt army, with minimum 1HQ and 2Troops etc.
This would also make the 'no changes to squad options' rule more acceptable, as there won't be as many differences between the 'selection criteria' for a 750 pt game or a 1250pt one.
5478
Post by: Panic
yeah,
I think the 500/750pts game should have a modified FOC because elite armies will struggle to fit 1HQ 2Troops in...
I'd propose;
0-1 HQ
1-6 Troops
0-3 Heavy/Elite/fastAttack
Panic...

For user ease..
Escalation-Here's how it works!
So when writing out your army list, write out a 500 point list. Standard force chart is modified slightly here, you only need a minimum of 1 Troops choice.
I still think it would just be easier to have people write a 500 point list -- even using these rules perhaps -- I don't really see how the escalation does anything except leave some players unable to spend the full amount of points and therefore playing at a handicap for no good reason I can think of.

Looks good to me. I assume this means that the AV restrictions have been removed along with the wound ones?
11029
Post by: Ketara
That is correct, all av and wound restrictions have been removed. Red, the reason I kept escalation is because the majority Ayes were in favour. I think the fact it forces you to construct your list a little differently is one of the reasons people like it.
On a side note gents, we have 10 people registered, with another 3 expected to be attending but as of yet unconfirmed, Panic, Rinkydink, and Titan-Princeps should all be attending. That would give us an odd number, but I've arranged for a friend to come in solely for the Saturday, and drop out when Chris does, giving us 14 players on Day 1, and 12 on Day 2.

Quick question regarding Escalation with Guard.
The rules state that each unit must be equipped identically as we 'go up' points levels. How does this affect Infantry Platoons?
If i have a Platoon of 1 PCS and 2 Infantry Squads, can i add a couple of Heavy Weapon Squads to it in the next size game? An infantry platoon is not a unit, merely a FOC choice which comproses multiple units, so as long as I keep the 1 PCS and Infantry Squads identical, I fulfill the Escalation requirements, correct? Automatically Appended Next Post: Actually, this reading does fall in line with the rule that you can add transports - you're not allowed to modify a 'unit', but adding transports is merely adding another unit to the same FOC slot, which IS allowed.
Same with Infantry platoons?
11029
Post by: Ketara
That is correct, you may add squads to an Infantry Platoon. However, you'd be unable to add a plasma gun to a squad to you took in a previous game. The trick is here is that you basically cannot upgrade squads. Adding new ones, or transports, is allowed.
Edited you in Mark.
I'll have the missions and points limits all finalised in the next week, so you chaps can all start list building furiously. As such, if there's any modifications you'd like to see made, now is the time to suggest them.

It's more convinient to take Canterbury East and then take the unibus up, the bus station for the unibus is literally right outside Canterbury East, whilst you have a small trek to the university (or even the bus stop) from Canterbury West.
5394
Post by: reds8n
err... not really.
You can get the uni bus from the St. Dunstans/Westgate stop opposite the Bishops Finger, which is right by Canterbury west. If you go to East then you'll have to walk to the bus station which, whilst fairly close, is much further.
You could maybe sue the stop on the ringroad, up past the garage, but that stop is often out of use at the moment due to works and the like. Cheaper from Westgate as well.
11029
Post by: Ketara
As Red said, Canterbury West is probably easiest, it's a straight walk up the Darwin footpath from there. If hiiking up a hill doesn't suit your temperament, there are buses on the main road three minutes walk from the station up to the uni.

You can't beat Transformers: The Movie. I watched it the other weekend with some buddies. Super-great stuff. I have Headmasters, Victory and Masterforce on DVD too. Missing Zone, but I'm nearly there. To understand the Japanese Transformers properly, you have to watch them in japanese with the subtitles. Cheers for the help on this end red, I was meanign to shoot off a PM about this sort of thing over the next few days. Beat me to the punch.
I've only been into the Gulbenkian cafe once or twice, it struck me as more of a coffee shop than an eatery. Do they serve actual meals there, or is my vague memory correct? If they serve meals, we should be fine, if not, we'll order in some pizza I guess. Or use the shop, whichever seems more convenient.
Do you reckon you could lay hands on some trays again for people to shuffle their stuff around with? They came in damned handy last time.
As for late night places Chris, there's always the Ocakbasi of Kent, although I'm not sure I'd wish that on anyone....

Does normally do food, again it'd be best to check beforehand as I don't know about this on weekends.
Trays I can do/get, ideally I'll organise them beforehand this time.

I have a quick question. I really want to try and run power blob Guard, but I don't have the models. Not to mention I've put vox casters on all my squads just so they look cool....
If I made everything a genralization across the entire army (aka, ALL infantry sergeants have power weapons. NONE of the vox casters are real, etc.) would people be ok with that?

^Provided your guidelines are that clear, I don't have a problem with it. I have a couple of counts-as too, but they're fairly self-explainatory.
11029
Post by: Ketara
Sure. No problem with counts as generally speaking, heck, I'm using a zeppelin as a vendetta!
This is such an easy going and laid back tournie that there shouldn't be any problems with this kind of thing. As long as you're not using a squig to count as a Battlewagon, or a coke can as Marneus Calgar, you're pretty good to go to be honest.
16689
Post by: notprop
What about my coke can drop pods and bottle-top marines? This is good news as I had assume that this would be the case and didn't want to have to cut chainswords off at the last minute. One other question Ben not quite covered before; Is it okay to add vehicles to squadrons as you escalate in PV?
11029
Post by: Ketara
In the same way you can add squads to an Imperial Guard Platoon, you may add vehicles to a squadron, that is correct. You would not be able to add or remove upgrades to vehicles already in the squadron though.
Just as a note, I know a number of you are coming to Platinum Devil for the first time, so if you'd like my phone number in case of any travel issues, feel free to PM me for it.

OK, so hotels booked for Me, Panic and TitanPrinceps, so we're all coming for definite! In Brad's fancy car, with a boot full of spare scenery. (Actually, if Brad and Gary haven't confirmed yet, take this as confirmed!) Next thing - what do I bring? I was gonna update my militia guard, but I've only got part of next week so I may not have time. Any chance of a roll call of what armies are going to be present? Since I have quite a few, I'll happily bring something that nobody else is bringing, just for the sake of variety.

I completed 40 snake type Termagants today, and they are being run through the dishwasher right now, in preparation for priming.

Basically, they have carapace armour and hotshot lasguns. So really, the only thing that they don't have is a large metal plate strapped to their chest and a power pack. (they do have a regular back pack however.) all special weapons i'm taking will be appropriately modelled however.

As long as it looks like a las weapon then I'm cool with it.
It's only really the " this flamer is a plasma gun, this ogryn is a rough rider serg., these auto cannons are missile launchers " kind of proxying is worth getting bothered about, and even then just as it helps avoid awkwardness between people who don't know each other all that well.

It's not going to be anything silly like that, the only thing that will be count as is *carapace armour, and lasguns as *hotshot lasguns. flamers will be modelled as flamers. Oh, and the most important thing gas masks will be counted as *gas masks with skulls.

..so... what are people's preferences with regards to Saturday evening then.
Last time we finished at the Uni, people popped back to hotels, houses, etc etc and then we all met up downtown for a few bevvies and grabbed some food.
People still up for that then ?
I ask as if we do go to eat somewhere, I might need to give a heads up or check prior to the event, to make sure they can feed/seat us all.
We could eat at the pub were we ate last time .. although they have changed the pies a bit ...

Or there's also "Chom Chom's" -- which is where we wnt and had a few rounds of cocktails after we'd eaten. They do fusion style food, it's a bit mroe expensive but is also all you can eat .. the quality is actually alright though, fret not.

Oh, Ben. More questions. (I'm going for Tau, just because nobody else is bringing them, but it's REALLY difficult to fit the army into 500, 1000 etc.)
- Will we have missions by the end of the week? (Or, are there any normal KP ones? Or are you sticking to alloted/special KP variations?)
- Can a Tau Commander add a Crisis Bodyguard unit in the next points jump. Is this the same as adding a dedicated Transport, or does it count as 'changing the squad'. They have separate listings in the HQ section of the Tau codex, but obviously the Bodyguard unit can only be taken with a commander.

It is by the power of magic dip that I was able to shade and varnish 40 Termagants in half an hour last night.
It takes longer to assemble the models than to paint and shade them, using my production line process.

Though I only have 10.5 models to paint, which is a good thing.

I will just declare myself a power gamer that doesn't need a well painted force because my "game" is what I am all about.

1. The new missions are up now! I just added them.
Attrition penalises those who go out of their way to gain advantage in Assassination, and Bombardment allows the losing player to gain a little extra edge in holding objectives, making things a leetle more interesting.
2. Yes you may. I would treat the adding of Honour Guard, Dark Eldar retinues and so on as the same, its adding a new unit, even if you attach them to an independent character.

Also, how do my engineers work in this case? Do they come on where my breaching drill made a hole or do they walk on from the table after they die?

Snarky wrote:hmm.. I smell battlemissions.

Errr......I actually have no idea how your engineers work. However, presuming its the same as a Dark Eldar webway portal, and reserves would usually be able to enter through the 'hole,' then they would be able to. If its similar to a drop pod however, then they would only be able to use the effect again if the breaching drill was destroyed in the same turn. If the drill comes equipment for the squad and not as a separate vehicle, then you would be able to use the effect again and deep strike (I'm presuming that's how it works) anywhere on the table.
EDIT: I've just added those clarifications to the mission description.
32303
Post by: Snarky
Well, here's how engineers work:
The drill automatically arrives on turn 2. It may pop up anywhere via the deep strike rules, and smashes anything that's in it's way when it pops up (similiar to the tyranid beasty)
It then leaves a hole behind, which the engineers may choose to come up from any time after (you don't roll for reserves, you simply choose when they pop up -i.e. the engineers are simply waiting in the tunnel)
So it works a bit like the Mawloc (is this right?). I'll bring a FAQ with some of the clarifications with me on the day.
Also for some general viewing, here's the Krieg Army list.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/k/kreig.pdf
Also the FAQ!
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/d/dkkfaq2707.pdf
An interesting note is that engineers don't buy a Hades Drill, the Hades Drill must buy a squad of engineers!
11029
Post by: Ketara
Okay, its kind of a mesh of the two, so here's the ruling.
I'll add it to the mission.

It was mainly because I want them off the table, but rather than confusing the issue and saying that the model is removed, but doesn't explode, etc, I felt it would be simpler to just say it explodes with all appropriate rules applying.

Yes.
Name badges.
What is the weather like?
I am seriously worried about getting down there. If I can get there, I'm not so worried about being snowed in.

Kent is apparently supposed to get 20cm or something (according to the wife) - though we were supposed to get 5cm today and have exactly 0cm

I might struggle from Essex. Its been snowing this evening and the hotel are being a bit arsey about when I can and can not cancel [if the worst happens!].
Hope it all blows over and we have no problems.

I hope we all make it down to Canterbury and get snowed in there.

What a delightfully cozy Xmas it would be.
Currently there is an almost frost like covering of snow on car bonnets and the like, and none elsewhere, it's too wet for the snow to stay it seems.
Of course when we all get snowed in and trapped in the tournament venue, we'll look back on this and laugh.
We'll eat Mr. Ketara first, he's the youngest and tenderest.

Speaking of which, I've never actually been to the Missing Link building, is there a specific room that we'll all go to meet at or are we going to meet elsewhere and then head to Darwin to play?

As things stand, there's a small ,layer of frost, but nothing exceptional down here in Canterbury.
And Snarky is younger and smaller than me! We get to eat him first......
The missing link building has 3 seminar rooms and a small hall, we're in the hall.

Well, I am driving down at about 3am on Saturday (was going to go Friday evening, but pretty much the entire country is going to be on the roads then apparently). Hopefully get to my wifes parents at about 7am, have a rest, then head out again at about 8.30-9am-ish to make sure I am there for about 10 so I can drive/walk around lost for half an hour. Getting my "I'm really tired" excuse in early for why I play really badly

It has one of those electric hand driers in the gents' ablutions. We can huddle under that when the cold becomes too much.

Prehaps a fire based knock out mission? As units are destroyed they become fuel for the fire. Naturally there would then be an extra benifit from destroying those big/dangerous warmachines.
Mmmmmm I love the toxic fumes of plastic and acrylic, smells like victory. [faints]

We're heading down first thing Saturday and will head straight to the university. Here's hoping traffic will be ok. Snow is bothering me a bit, bit I'm sure we'll be ok. Maybe brandy will help - I'm certain there'll be a few gamers who'll help me out

A little bit of snow here (midlands) - only about 0.5-1cm on the pavements and side roads.
Due more later on tonight/tomorrow morning, so I am hoping to be on the motorway before it starts/gets heavy.
And to update on my painting: Just finished painting the trim lines and joints/pipes on my 10 models, and have just put on the crackle glaze on the 0.5 model [bwahaha]
Hope everyone manages to get there OK.

Going to sneak off work early today to see if I can complete the base coating of my characters. My troopers are all up to shade but a slow painting week (poorly daughter) has meant that my command squads are a distictly drab affair. I hope this does not mean that their Leadership rolls are as lacklusture!

The snow as things stand is still relatively light. Just a small smattering across the ground here, so you chaps who are heading down tonight shouldn't run into any difficulties. Couldn't say for those coming tomorrow morning though.

I drove down between 10:30 and 1. The route was M25, M26, A249, M20, M2, A2.
There were several pretty sharp snow showers on the way and a lot of snow on the ground.
There was a small jam just where the A249 joins the M2, due to roadworks closing one lane.
Canterbury is clear and cold. A light snow shower about 1 o'clock.
The forecast for tomorrow is more snow.

Have to say that I am enjoying my evening of finishing off my painting - have not left it all to the last minute like I did for SS in August Just need to wash 5 helmets, paint 10 pairs of eyes, then do 10 bases. The sad thing is I will have to get up at 2.30 to drive south for the winter And I hope it is not hot enough for reds8n's avatar now

Just about to head across now, so will see you later Automatically Appended Next Post: Unfortunately had to leave after lunch today due to snow. Took me well over 3 hours to get home (it is a 1 hour trip normally). had a few scary moments on rhe roads too but made it back without crashing though many could not say the same
From the state of the roads I don't think i will be able to make it for Sunday unfortunately.

Apologies for leaving early on Sunday, but I didn't want to risk being stuck for another night.
Unbelievably, after they gritted all the roads, the buses still didn't run. Trains were fine though.

Sorry I had to leave early fellers but the snow [and the Mrs!] was calling and had to make tracks before the next lot fell.
As it was the roads were clear and it only took me 20 minutes longer than getting there so I had time to make my assent on the top table after all!
Ben you really set up a greta tournement and would like to both commend and thank you for that.
All of the players we top notch and there were some really great forces present, with special mention to Kk's Termaguant generating Tyranid army that gave me a sound dusting!
The cocktails and jellybeans are on me for PD3.

Morning fellas.
Sorry to ditch you all on the second day - perhaps I'd better explain.
After seeing Reds8n briefly in the car park, Benny and I drove to our hotel. The drive was hairy as gak. We skidded 4 or 5 times, and ended up sliding sideways down a hill, missing half a dozen abandoned cars by a gnat's pube. After finally getting onto the A2 (where our hotel was, 5 miles from the venue), we got showered and ready to set off. The decision was made that we would cab back in to town, as it's better to write off a stanger's car than your own. We also decided to rely on taxis until the homeward journey Sunday evening.
No cabs. First the A2 shut due to an accident, and then the cab companies started refusing to some out to us, then finally stopped running altogether. Dinner for two in the hotel restaurant then. :(
Sunday came and after breakfast I started calling the cabs again. Same story as before, and today Benny really didn't want to drive his car back up to the Uni, and I can't say I blame him - I wouldn't even have driven my shitheap up there. We waited it out for an hour or so, tried again but to no avail. After speaking with Ketara,
we then made the very difficult decision to jack in the second day of gaming. It's a shame, as there were people I still wanted to meet, and armies I still wanted to play. We wrote some killer CSM lists in the hotel room then limped up the A2, toward home.
We both had a killer time though chaps. We spoke almost non-stop about the armies we'd played, people we'd met and the great time we'd had. If we can organise to do the same thing again, but in a more agreeable clime, we'll be back with gusto. Once again sorry for abandoning the cause, but thanks for a great first day.
Peace.

Just to add another post to the "I had a fun time" vibe we have going on, and my total respect especially to thsoe who travelled so far to play as well.
Be great to meet up with people again, and kudos to everyone for staying so cheerful in the somewhat WTF weather we had , the pics below show what it was like when we all arived, all nervous and smiling and giggly, early on Saturday morning and then quite how much snow did fall in just a few scant hours.
My blastmasters, alas, let me down quite a lot with regards to actually hurting thinsg this time, alas, but the Defiler gets special credit for being a genuine rampaging engine of destruction.
Special thanks indeed to thsoe who brought along some simply stunning terrain, which made the games great to watch, let alone play on.
Roll on the next get together.. maybe we'll have a look at that grand battle/ apoc type scenario we talked about.
