It always seems to me that no matter how long you have been collecting or how many miniatures you have in your collection there is always one which for some reason has managed to illude you. This can be incredibly frustrating especialy if it is one which you have previously owned or is long out of production. The two largest hurdles which come between you and your pot of gold at the end of the rainbow are generaly availability and cost. Others do exist such as condition and compatability with your current collection.
This whole idea came about after I moved house a few weeks back, whilst clearing out my cupboards I came accross my old 3rd edition Empire army, seeing some of the miniatures which first enticed me into the hobby persauded me to revitalise my force. Unfortunately one model was missing. An Empire war wagon. No problem I thought, I'll get one on Ebay. It was then I realised not only do these things go for silly money, but to find one complete and unpainted is as rare as rocking horse poo.
Finaly I managed to get my hands on one and it will take pride of place in my army once put together and painted (this may take some time!)

So people of Dakka what is your "Holy Grail"? It doesn't have to neccesarily be a miniature. It could be a book or game or anything GW related.

Its got to be RTB-01 and minis of a similar ilk.

And SW Wulfen minis - I should have brought them when I had no kids and a higher level of disposable income.

I should however have kept the metal chaos dread, Jugger and 2nd ed chaos marines that I threw away when I thought i would never play silly TTMGs' again!

Oh and I wish I had kept Star Wars supremacy and 40k Final liberation too! and Panzer General for 3do/ps1 cannot find copies at a decent price anywhere.

For ages it was the Empire Bright Wizard with his arms spread and flames licking his shoulders and head. Couldn't find him anywhere and one day I found him on ebay it was fantastic and he only cost me about £5.00

Hmmm. My original 'Holy Grail' of modelling was the old Ork Eldar Tinboy, but I managed to get one a few years ago. Nowadays, it's the old resin Wave Serpent.

Never even seen one for sale :( If anyone has one they don't want any more, pm me!!

It wasn't to own a model, but to find out what the model was. It was the Knarloc/Carnosaur combination that was used as the EotG carrier from many years ago. I did find it, right here on Dakka.

I have all of mine.

Harlequin Jetbikes (30 of 'em!)
The original Harlequins boxed set. (I also have AT LEAST three times as many Harlequin models as can be legally used in a Codex army.)
Thrud (various incarnations of. I only lack 1 version)
Chaos Toilet.
Squat Bikers.

The only thing left I have a slight hankering for is some old Inquisitors in Terminator armour from back in the day, but I've had chances to buy them and not bothered more than once.

For the longest time mine was the Uriel Ventris BL diorama, and the Iwo Jima Skullz diorama. However after this summers mad ebay business I finally managed to pick up both for $70 and $30 respectfully.

Now I'm after the rest of the 40k BL dioramas for hopefully around the same price, and the big resin Forgeworld Ultramarine.

I have the goblin-hewer myself, but knowing that they're real just makes it suck more that I've never found one

Also although I wasen't searcing for them when I found them the owner of a store I played at found a box of OLD OLD blister pack minis in the back of the supply room. They wern't even on the GW registry of miniatures anymore so he was selling them for about a dollar each. I bought a Von Carstien model that actually didn't look like crap and a Dwarf Slayer. I've never seen these models before and I haven't seen them again since. So I consider them my found Grails.

Due to my Hobbies addiction I actually have a few.

World of Warcraft - Collectors Edition - literally just for the pets that come with it, but its like Golddust in new/sealed condition, and painfully the odd time It's come up on ebay its when I haven't had the funds to be able to get one.

Warsong - an old Megadrive game, its one I previuosly owned, would love to have it again, but can't justify paying the often £40+ prices it goes for on ebay.

Dark Future - I played it a few times when I was younger, and I'd love to be able to get a couple of sets at some point, rarely comes up though, I've not been lucky enough to be around when a good condition set has appeared so far anyways.

Blood Bowl - those taking notice may have heard me say this before, but I mad a drastic error when I was younger and traded 17 fully painted teams, and five or so more I was working on for bloody Star Trek CCG boosters.
I was trying to make up the full NAF league at the time. I had loads of the old 2nd edition figures including a load of rare ones as I brought a load (seven or eight teams worth) off a guy in Plymouth in around 92-93. I had the unreleased troll player in there for example, so I have no idea where he got them from. So aye, I had Reikland Reavers, Chaos all Stars, Middenheim Marauders, Darkside Cowboys, Lowdown Rats, Dwarf Giants (inc the proper Star Lineman fig) and Elfheim Eagles to name a few.
So yeah, one of my long term holy Grails is to do it again, get the 2nd edition book and just fully make up the NAF division, but figs are so hard to track down, its like a Mission Impossible for me atm.

Those are my main ones.

I want the second TA1 - Aa'ngor in its original box. I saw one on ebay a couple of years ago, but not since. Own the model (twice) and own the box I bought it in years ago, but the cover picture has long gone.

I'd really like TA2 - The Dwarf Juggernaut, but its goes for a lot.

I have a real affection for the C28 Demon models, but cannot recall ever seeing them.

I already have most things I would want (none of these are my paintjobs)...

Centurius:
lurks somewhere in my parent's attic waiting for the day I dig him out.

Zogrod wortsnagga, my all time top Ork model:

though I still have the banner pole as well

I also have the old ghazkull and makari and a khorne ork stormboy (nazi style) too which is pretty nifty.

But the one thing I would love to have... a 'new' unpunched, complete copy of warhammer quest. The game is only so-so and the models are horribly dated, but it would certainly be a nice addition to the collection.

Your Personal Holy Grail @ 2010/10/25 20:52:39

@legoburner,
I agree about Zodgrod 100% some of the older Ork models just ooze character, I recently picked up some madboys from ebay, asides from them being a bit smaller than the current miniatures they still fit in.

My other Holy Grail was the green leather bound edition of 'The Armour Of Contempt' (only 300 printed). I had the other 3 and searched for nearly 3 years before getting my grubby mits on a copy.

For me, it's Eldar. In their entirety. I love the army, I love the play-style and I love the appearance. I have never got more than a couple of boxes and codex before putting them down for Space Wolves.

They are by far my favourite army in 40K, I just can't do them justice and they are bastards to paint and collect. Maybe one day...

Thats a good one Just Dave, and reminds me of my final one.. White Scars, love everything about them, background, style, would love a fully converted and painted army.

Only two issues with that, I know I don't currently possess the conversion skills needed, and also I can't paint white to save my life.

One day though, one day.

I want to model all my heroes. And I want to collect my 22nd and collect 25 marines for each of my DIY chapters. And the Emperor's Shields.
And I also want 2 land raiders. And then buy 2 super-heavies.
*cough*Malnar*Cough*
I have yet to think of a way to build my most favorite hero! The Icon of my chapter! But I have never found a way to make him in the pose I want. A striking pose like he is basically throwing a ultramarine successor chapter chapter master to the ground and his eyes are blazing with inner fire, and his sword is double bladed and he is riding on thin air. (inspired partially by Dark Lord Sean's Work on Death of the Emperor) I really wish i could do that but my skills as a modeler are limited.

Oddly enough, I don't think I have a "holy grail" model .

Pretty much everything I've ever wanted, I've gotten in short order (and sometimes regretted and then traded/sold).

Of course, I have a massive minis collection, so this shouldn't be too big of a surprise.

At this point, storage and organization are more of a challenge than acquisition.

I have three Ork Battlewagons including one I converted into an 'ard top as seen in one of the old Ork Supplements (which I own as well, btw) or in a WD. You can see one of my Battlewagons in my gallery. Not fantastically painted, but a very chracterful model.

I recently picked up a second copy of Slaves to Darkness from EBay dirt cheap, just because it was cheap. It is not in very good nick, but I have a plan to scan in all of the artwork from it, and it saves me wrecking the spine of my one, which is in relatively good nick. (Better than one I saw for £75 in a second-hand bookstore anyway).

I have the Compendium too, but notthe compilation. I started playing in 1990, so I have loads of the old hardback books. Some of them are awesome. I plan to start reviewing them soon, and posting my favourite bits.

Polonius wrote:For my own collecting, I'm not sure I have a grail. I'd love the old early 2nd edition all metal eldar jetbikes, lots of them, to go with my all metal eldar army (aside from grav tanks, of course)

I have about 30 of the Harlequin Jetbikes. In the process of acquiring them I picked up a few regular, non-Harlequin metal jetbikes. I actually prefer them to the current plastic jetbikes, which I think are the worst model in the Eldar range. (Were they even designed by Jes?). Unfortunately, many of the Harlequin Jetbikes I picked up were faceplates only, so I have scavenged the bodies from under the smooth faceplates to actually build complete bikes, so I can't offer to help you.

I feel like I am bragging quite a bit in this post, but I don't care!

I've got some of them but I'd like to have a complete set of the original lead marines from Rogue Trader. Also I'd like to fill in the gaps of my collection of original Dark Elf citadel minis, they were very hard to come by. The ultimate holy grail is The Godess Rigg, leader of the amazons they did in the mid eighties, never managed to get hold of it.

I have just stumbled across an image of the old Armorcast Ork gargant. I would happily punch my granny in the face for one of those. Failing that anyone who may consider parting with one please PM me!

Their models are terrible, so I've always known I'm going to have to do serious work with GS to get what I want. I've been threatening to make some for like 4 years now, but have never gotten around to it.

I'm just gonna get some scout bikes, and put Cadians on them, and count them as rough riders. Horses make no sense in the 40k universe.

Those are my main ones.

my local has a BB box new. would you like to work something out for me to get it for you?

Those look familiar, though the last time I saw them, they were wrecking face on WhiteDragon's World Eaters.

I've got about 45 of them, myself.

Honestly, I can only think of one Grail myself, and I finally got one last week:

I have the second edition rulebook and wargear, but I've mislaid my old codex imperialis, which is my favourite GW fluff book. Also would like the old army lists that came in the black and white print outs, all the old second edition cardboard ruins. Oh and the armegeddon campaign book, that was legend.
The second ed boxed set may have had pants models and an excess of blanche art, but fluff wise it was da bomb.

Remind me in mid-December to look, I may have a second set of all the books from the 2nd ed 40K box(if my parents haven't thrown them away with all my old WDs). I ended up with another full set last summer, but my first set was left behind when I moved. If I can find them, I'll try to toss them your way.

Did they throw in censors in the 360 arcade version. As I recall there was a bit of womanly squishy bitz shown in this. Otherwise of they didn't I'm going to think of investing in this

On-Topic: The Forgeworld Broadside suit. I asked the guy at my store to order one about twice and he never did. Wasted the entire summer waiting for it, so I can safely say I've sought after after this grail.

My holy grail is not a single miniature, per se, rather a goal of painting every single army I own to a tabletop standard that I am happy with. So far the unpainted tally reaches to:

~ 30k of 40k models
~ 5k of fantasy models
~ 100k of Epic models

So it doesn't look like I am going to get it done in my lifetime anyway!

It's been said before, but I still want my own Thunderhawk...

I would so fly that around the room after it was all painted and make swooshing sounds...then I'd end up dropping it and kicking my TV in anger!

I'd like to be able to get a 40k Sigmar...would have to be commissioned. And to paint my army to look like a 40k sigmar army. Neither is working. Other than that I am really keen to get all the Ratlings/Halflings GW have produced.

squilverine wrote:It always seems to me that no matter how long you have been collecting or how many miniatures you have in your collection there is always one which for some reason has managed to illude you.

Mine would be Pulp City.

I picked up the two basic boxed sets, got shafted on the resin bases and didn't get back to them yet. The game is fun witht e couple of guys I do have done, and the other Reiper guys I use, but I'd really like to get those basic boxed sets pained up and on the table, along with whatever else I missed since the first couple of guys.

A second might be to just roll up and finish up a couple of my outstanding projects that are gathering dust at the house.

I am not sure what they are, I know GW makes them. But they look like empire troops with a bunch of large hammers. I saw a box given away at games day and offered the kid 30 bucks for it and he said and a quote " nah I think for that I'd rather throw them out" I have been looking for these for ages. They are pewter and come in a box of 10 I belive.

Incorrect The PS1 SotN is not the same game on XBLA. Easier? Not an option. Updated graphics? Heresy.
PLUS the original PAL game cam with a soundtrack CD and an art book. It's simply the greatest PS1 game ever. I've never been able to find one in the condition I want, for a price I want to pay. (read: mint for a tenner)
