Like most, I have decided to something with my 1000th post.
I made a thread about what I should do, and ALMOST got dissuaded at the last second from ranking Primarchs to founding chapters. However, I will add a tiny blurb about a founding chapter at the same time I rank a primarch.



And to start it off:

Number 18 : Rowboat "mary-sue" Girlyman


Hey Guys! I wrote this book, and you should follow it. And stuff.
That sums up my thoughts on girlyman. I just don't like him, or his chapter that much, for that matter.
He is just that one guy. The one guy who gets the spot in the play (or on the team) that you wanted. The guy who's project just beats yours. The guy who you find out the girl you like is dating. That guy.
He may have killed Alpharius, which makes me sad. (but he gets owned by Fulgrim, so its all good) I don't like how rowboat and the smurfs are 'best' at everything. There is even the Ultramarines movie, for the Emperor's sake. All in all, my least favorite primarch. Has been, will always be.

Also, I think Dorn has one of the worst deaths of the primarchs, dying aboard The Sword of Sacrilege. "Lets all attack this chaos fleet that vastly out numbers us. I'll lead the attack myself!"
He could have been a wicked cool guy, but his lame death, 'pain glove', and attack on the Iron cage just ruin him for me.

(Sicarius Sicarus? could there be a connection?) Anyway, Lorgar isn't that cool. He threw his hissy fit because the Emprah told him to stop worshiping him, then turned straight to chaos. Also, that just sounds a bit cheesy, "I want to venerate and worship something!" I'm guessing most other Primarchs would have said, "Sure, Dad." If he told them to do something. But not Lorgar. Quoting from my School's banner thing in my gym, "Be a fan, not a fanatic" That advice probably should have been given to him.

Anyway, now time to actually rant a bit. I dislike Johnson a whole lot. He did do a few cool things, but most of his actions during and after the heresy are unrecorded, or spent doing crap with his own legion. He thought he could have been warmaster, which is kinda dumb, and thought about it before Horus was even defeated. He left/ sent a ton of his chapter back on Caliban, which I also think wasn't a good idea. Also, I kinda picture Johnson as the cowardly Lion from Wizzard of Oz, but whatever

Holy crap look at that cape! Anyway, the reason I like Angron more than the other guys is because of his tragic story (hint hint, also the reason why I like many of the primarchs, including number 1, a bit more).
Also, when he just just lasted on the planet, he killed a bunch of eldar come to stop what he would become. Awesome. Put that in your 'mind war lol' and smoke it. He was inducted as a gladiator, and was undefeated, as well as the crowd favorite. He kept trying to lead a revolt with his gladiators, but continued to fail. Until one day, he broke free with the gladiators and they lived in the mountains, beating back attacks from the cities' armies. Then seven, SEVEN, armies surrounded them. It all looked grim, when suddenly, the Emprah! Mean old dad pops down and says, "Join me."

"If you only knew the power of the Imperium. The slavers never told you what happened to your father."
"They told me enough! They told me he was killed!

However, he gets convinced way to easy to join Chaos. "Yo, dude, Its Horus. The Emprah is devoid of honor. If you join me, we can rule the galaxy together, Brother and Brother! *muffled*And get revenge on the others and stuff."
The reason why most of my ranking of him is just a Star Wars joke, is because there is little info on ol' Angron. I don't know, I kinda think he's cool, being an awesome demon-prince and stuff.

Also, copied and pasted from Lexicanum "At the time of the Horus Heresy it is said that no other Primarch could have bested Angron in single combat save for Horus and perhaps Sanguinius"

Sweet. For starters, I don't like the 'lol Genghis khan in space' bit. Kinda lame actually. When he was young, his adopted father was killed by a rival tribe on his home planet. Khan raged and brought his tribe to murder every man, woman and child of the other clan. Wow. Khorne would have been proud. He mounts the head of the tribe's leader on his tent, and stated he wanted to unite the tribes, stopped the battle between brother versus brother. I support that plan. After he pissed off a big clan, who bought their armored warriors to fight. Khan tactically geniused his tribes men around, and their volleys of arrows and quick speed defeated the other force. Cool. (I wonder if Angron and Khan switched planets they landed on...) Then, the Emprah shows up and Khan joins up. Alrighty. Now, there are like four sentences left to his name. During the Heresy, He essentially surfed the top of a razorback and led his troops. Wow, and people complained when C.S. Goto wrote about it Then, after the heresy, he went to get prisoners captured by the deldar, and 'got sucked into a webway portal' but possibly just got lost in a warp storm. Lame
And thats all there is to know about Khan. Wow. My whole ranking of him is basically a summary of what he did. I don't have any real emotions for Khan. He could have been way higher, since he had potential to be a cool primarch, but there is so little info about him.

Well, Vulkan. Another character I know little about. When he was four, he decided not to hide from the Dark Eldar raiders. He did not reveal himself, but he said he could beat anyone in the competition. The towns people laughed and thought Vulkan would surely win. Vulkan ran out and hunted a big'un. On his way back the moutain, which turned out to be a volcano (lol) erputed and Vulkan was left to cling onto the edge for hours, never letting go of the salamander. The Emprah ran over, and tossed his clearly superior salamander into the river of lava, and saved Vulkan. They went to town, and Vulkan was declared winner. However, he bowed to the Emprah, saying, "any man who would value life over pride was worthy of his service." Then, the Emprah revealed he was the Emprah. I think that is a pretty cool thing, to serve the Emprah even though he lost. Well, thats the last solid info about him, other than he was at the dropsite massacre and he would return in the End Times. I really like Vulkan's back story, but there is virtually no more info (that I can gather from Lexicanum) and that is why he is low. There are other primarchs ranked a bit higher than him I don't know much about, but they are coming up fast

10. Perturabo

Perturabo has some cool things going for him. He is the Primarch of the Iron Warriors, who are one of my favorite Chaos legions. He also came up with the devious Eternal Fortress trap. (more on that later) I’m not a fan of his pre-emperor story (unlike most of the others) He lands on a planet and is taken in by their Tyrant. He showed no affection back to anyone on the planet or his ‘father.’ Then, when the Emprah shows up, he submits and over throws his adopted dad. Jerk. Perturabo was also envious of Dorn, which I think is lame. (Personally, I’d rather be the best Siege Master than the best Defense crafter.) Then, during the Horus Heresy he switches into ownage mode. Horus gives him an epic hammer, and Perty goes and kills 5 million Olympians because they were in a revolt. Holy gak. However, they did realize what they had done was horrible after they watched the pyres. I like that they had a conscious. If it were the World Eaters, they would have been onto the next planet already. Here is where it gets ugly. The Eternal Fortress (aka the Iron Cage) “a keep centered within twenty square miles of bunkers, towers, minefields, trenches, tank traps and redoubts.” After the Iron Fists finally broke through to the keep, they found out it was just a trap. (again) Then, the Smurfs rescued their bros, etc etc. Over 400 Fists were killed, and their gene seeds were sacrificed. There isn’t really a tragedy involved with Perty, just a ton of killing. Kudos to him for destroying the Imperial Fists.

Cool, though Roboute's ranking was somewhat predictable.
Still, I'm now monitoring this for developments.

At least it wasn't Angron.
I'll try to add at least two more tomorrow.( since my xbox red ringed on me, I have nothing better to do than paint and rank )

Next one is Angron the Angry x2. (and very angry).

while i too slightly dislike Gulliman, of all the primarchs, he had the biggest role.
Now "smurf" haters allways point out the fallacy the the Ultras did nothing in the heresy, the truth however is that they took on the biggest legion, The word bearers (Ref: the first heretic) and every marine sent to fight the Ultras was one less on terra. The second thing that gets ignored is that he kept the Imperium alive, then instuted the Codex Astartes, returning a small ammount of trust for the loyalist marines.

I personally look foward to the eventual Heresy era Ultramarine book, it will paint Gulliman in a new light im sure

I don't really like Gullimen because hes a bit to much in the story and left other primarches (Konrad Kurze, Lion el johnson) with pretty much no story line.

I have yet to read the HH books (heresy, I know. I did read the Flight of the Eiestein, If that is a HH book)

17: Space Furri...Wolves.

Space Vikings. Sounds good. Space viking's with wolf pets. I can dig it. Space vikings with thunder wolf calary. That sounds....Wait what?
Are you fething kidding me? That is the most ott thing I have ever heard in Warhammer 40k lore. Yes, I know everybody makes fun of it, but it had to be mentioned.
I don't like how they have no successor chapters. I don't like how you can have a Wolf Lord on a thunder wolf with two fenrisian wolves with a wolf bone necklace wielding the wolf of the wolf's wolf wolf. With a side helping of wolfy wolf wolf wolf wolf. And extra wolf. (I know the BA codex has this too, but I don't see Blood angels flying around on blood drops with blood drop pets, so...) I don't like how they have 'rune priests' and not librarians. I just don't like them.
Sure, some of the pups are badass, and they do have some cool fluff, but I don't really like them that much.

WOLF lords have been called that since the second edition, and though the cavalry thing is a dumb move by GW to try and bring in little kids to splash out mummy's money, for the most part SW get a lot of undeserved flak. A lot of the "wolf" stuff was in the codex in the days of yore, it's only recently that people seemed to have developed a problem with it. Of course they have Rune Priests; they're a tribally themed army, and "Librarians" sounds like the kind of guy the Ultras have dusting off shelves full of arcane crud in the Fortress of Hera. Most SW items are nowhere near as bad in terms of the Blood thing as BA are (the Blood Fist. It's just a regular powerfist, but with 20% more BLOOD) Indeed, I'd say there were only about four items (offhand) that actually fitted this stereotype.

Also, in that, there was not a single comment on the actual Primarch of the SW.

The only reason I called it out so badly was in a different thread, I saw someone post of list of their wolf lord, and like 6 things he had started with wolf.
If Space wolves were just vikings in space, with a touch of wolves, they would have gotten a much higher ranking. Also, the libby vs. rune priest argument is from the HH (I think) when psychers were banned, but the SW's were like, "herp derp we only have rune priests. No psychers here"

Well, I can't really comment on the guy's wolf lord, but as to the other thing, SW often don't see their psykers as other legions did. They saw them as essentially Shamanistic people who could harness the elements, and as such many of them don't see the powers of the Rune Priests as born of the warp.
There's a quote about it in the codex: "Every Fenrisian sees himself as at least in part a son of the storm, and therefore they see nothing unnatural about the tempest lending it's strength to it's own."

Huh. This has got to be the third? primarch ranking thread I've seen, will definitely follow it to see how it compares to the others.

16: Word bearers. (Two for one!)

Basically, all my reasons for disliking Lorgar are the same for his legion. However, I will say this: epic color scheme.
That that being said, I think they have some good things, and some bad. I liked in 3.5 they could have demons from any legion, pretty unique.
The reason they are so low is because that they just don't appeal to me a player. I don't play chaos, but if I did, I wouldn't play Word Bearers. Sure, they started the Imperial cult, thats a plus, however; They lost to the Ultrasmurfs. I think it would have been cooler if they destroyed part of the smurfs, and then got kicked out. (If you are wondering why the smurfs are higher than these past 3, don't hold your breath. They are coming up real soon.)

I can see why Lorgar gets such a low rating; he was indeed the dude that gave the order to turn Horus. He also embodies the worst aspects of preaching, and is a bit of a hypocrite too.

He and his legion started the imperial cult, which is fine and dandy, but Lorgar himself isn't cool

They're basically the only legion that kept any formal organization after the heresy, as well as being one of the largest legions, and their frequent use of daemons. I find them to be by far the coolest chaos legion.


But whatever. I'm not THAT fond of lorgar either. He's a wimp. If it wasn't because of their awesomesauce color scheme, I doubt I'd play them.

I did like how they could have tons of demons, and their color scheme is one of the coolest, but they are definitely not the coolest chaos legion.

Well i loved rogal dorn. He went out like a badass in my mind. His chapter is pretty damn cool.

Yeah I know. I completely understand your ratings except with the Raven Guard they my favorite compared to the ultramarines. blah. Raven guard are one of most favorite legions along with the Imperial Fists, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Salamanders, basically all the founding loyal legions except white scars and ultramarines.

Yeah I know. I completely understand your ratings except with the Raven Guard they my favorite compared to the ultramarines. blah. Raven guard are one of most favorite legions along with the Imperial Fists, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Salamanders, basically all the founding loyal legions except white scars and ultramarines.

What? I actually think the White Scars are pretty snazzy. Not Khan though, he's kinda lame. (since there is almost no info about him, like Dave said in his thread)

nah not really. He is making legitimate points about the lore and stuff. He is completely within site regulations. Kinda like my Chapter countdown. Where I show every chapter I have ever done in celebration in the fact I am hitting 10 years of hobbying and 2,000 posts and more.

Sanguinus was pretty homosex, IMO. With his meaningless sacrifice, he doomed his entire legion for the rest of eternity.

Should have had 2nd and 11th primarchs in this list. Sure we know nothing about them, but makes them more interesting than a few primarchs

. I've kinda dug myself a hole here, while writing my list there are primarchs I dislike more than Russ, so his rank gets pushed up higher. Ah well.

And the few minutes to possibly twenty minutes is how fast I can finish correcting and printing my paper due tomorrow.
I know Wargaming takes precedence over most of my life choices, but unfortunately, not work I can't get out of. (The paper is worth two tests so...)
Also, I only had like, 3 mistakes on it, so I'll write it up in a minute. The rest of the possible 20 minutes is how long it takes me to ramble on and fix up my rankings

Yeah, I can see why some don't like them, but hte reason I chose them is not their codex, but cause I love their fluff- unlike the BA, their Curse only makes them better, and they don't go whinig about it...

As for Russ? He's pretty awesome in every way, except his unshakeable faith- listening to horus telling him to kill a borther? Really?

Even so, his legion's great in my view. Say what you will about the current 'dex (Thunderwolves? Really? Riding giant wolves now?) but fluff wise, thier kinda a really cool legion. Beneath all their badassery, they just need a hug... NOT! Plus, they got cool hair and beards, and have certain... er... privileges that regular marines don't. (Just look at the Trickster).

I wish we'd hear more about the 13th company or the curse of the wolfen, that would cement them in my mind forever as the coolest legion.

Well, As I promised: 15: Lion El'johnson

Lions and wolves and 7-foot tall armored space marines Oh My! Well, there are some things I like about the Lion, Within a decade, he led an army and cleared his planet of the 'great beasts', which I think is a pretty big accomplishment. He knocked Russ out cold, which I think is pretty funny, and awesome. He 'preformed a master stroke' and against unfavorable odds, captured the siege weapons Horus would have used againsts Terra. Pretty awesome. However, he traded them to Perturabo to further his goal of becoming the new warmaster. (which definitely would have gone to Sangy anyway, btw. Horus said so himself) This was a dumb move in to ways. First, he traded away the weapons only to further his own goals, and the heresy wasn't even over. Though he couldn't have known, Perturabo was a traitor, and he just handed him the weapons he just fought for.Then, after bombing Caliban, Johnson declared nap time and is sleeping in (Dawyne) The Rock (Johnson) (ha, I made a joke. Get it? Lion el'Johnson. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.)
Anyway, now time to actually rant a bit. I dislike Johnson a whole lot. He did do a few cool things, but most of his actions during and after the heresy are unrecorded, or spent doing crap with his own legion. He thought he could have been warmaster, which is kinda dumb, and thought about it before Horus was even defeated. He left/ sent a ton of his chapter back on Caliban, which I also think wasn't a good idea. Also, I kinda picture Johnson as the cowardly Lion from Wizzard of Oz, but whatever

Writers block right now, I need to figure out what chapter I'm going to rank.

14: Angron. He's Angry for the Emprah! (at least until he turns traitor)


Holy crap look at that cape! Anyway, the reason I like Angron more than the other guys is because of his tragic story (hint hint, also the reason why I like many of the primarchs, including number 1, a bit more).
Also, when he just just lasted on the planet, he killed a bunch of eldar come to stop what he would become. Awesome. Put that in your 'mind war lol' and smoke it. He was inducted as a gladiator, and was undefeated, as well as the crowd favorite. He kept trying to lead a revolt with his gladiators, but continued to fail. Until one day, he broke free with the gladiators and they lived in the mountains, beating back attacks from the cities' armies. Then seven, SEVEN, armies surrounded them. It all looked grim, when suddenly, the Emprah! Mean old dad pops down and says, "Join me."

The reason why most of my ranking of him is just a Star Wars joke, is because there is little info on ol' Angron. I don't know, I kinda think he's cool, being an awesome demon-prince and stuff.

Sweet. For starters, I don't like the 'lol Genghis khan in space' bit. Kinda lame actually. When he was young, his adopted father was killed by a rival tribe on his home planet. Khan raged and brought his tribe to murder every man, woman and child of the other clan. Wow. Khorne would have been proud. He mounts the head of the tribe's leader on his tent, and stated he wanted to unite the tribes, stopped the battle between brother versus brother. I support that plan. After he pissed off a big clan, who bought their armored warriors to fight. Khan tactically geniused his tribes men around, and their volleys of arrows and quick speed defeated the other force. Cool. He then becomes the Khan of the 'whole land.' He then goes Persia style and says, "join or die" to everybody. Most join, both others get wiped out. Seems kinda brutal. (I wonder if Angron and Khan switched planets they landed on...) Then, the Emprah shows up and Khan joins up. Alrighty. Now, there are like four sentences left to his name. During the Heresy, He essentially surfed the top of a razorback and led his troops. Wow, and people complained when C.S. Goto wrote about it Then, after the heresy, he went to get prisoners captured by the deldar, and 'got sucked into a webway portal' but possibly just got lost in a warp storm. Lame
And thats all there is to know about Khan. Wow. My whole ranking of him is basically a summary of what he did. I don't have any real emotions for Khan. He could have been way higher, since he had potential to be a cool primarch, but there is so little info about him.

Yeah, almost makes it inconceivable that he was slain at the hands of horus...since he had so many great qualities. Also I would have imagined in that skirmish between the two, Sanguinius could have bobbed and weaved Horus's attacks....since he must have been super agile.......WITH THAT SWEET PAIR OF WINGS ON HIS BACK!!!

You must remember, the Horus battle was after he had both his legs broken (after 3 full days of fighting)

Alrighty, I know I've taken a long time off, but finally, another ranking

Number 12: Vulkan


Well, Vulkan. Another character I know little about. When he was four, he decided not to hide from the Dark Eldar raiders. Standing there, with his two smithing hammers, he inspired the people to rise up and they defeated the deldar. Then to celebrate his victory, the Emprah appeared. He did not reveal himself, but he said he could beat anyone in the competition. The towns people laughed and thought Vulkan would surely win. Even going as so far as wagering whoever lost had to serve the victor. They were perfectly tied, so they had an epic tiebreaker. Hunt down the biggest Salamander with a weapon you forge. Vulkan ran out and hunted a big'un. On his way back the moutain, which turned out to be a volcano (lol) erputed and Vulkan was left to cling onto the edge for hours, never letting go of the salamander. The Emprah ran over, and tossed his clearly superior salamander into the river of lava, and saved Vulkan. They went to town, and Vulkan was declared winner. However, he bowed to the Emprah, saying, "any man who would value life over pride was worthy of his service." Then, the Emprah revealed he was the Emprah. I think that is a pretty cool thing, to serve the Emprah even though he lost. Well, thats the last solid info about him, other than he was at the dropsite massacre and he would return in the End Times. I really like Vulkan's back story, but there is virtually no more info (that I can gather from Lexicanum) and that is why he is low. There are other primarchs ranked a bit higher than him I don't know much about, but they are coming up fast

That, and Vulkan chose to be a dick and scatter his artifacts all over the place, rather than give them to his men to use to win battles.

BBL (the OP) is obviously going to rank Sangy as the best casue you know he has absolutely no flaws.

If you are tired of the threads ranking the primarchs than just don't read the thread. You don't need to post on the thread about how it sucks. Stop being a little whiny and man up. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions although some people are less deserving of this right than others. So stop trolling and feth off.

Dakka is exactly about posting how much things suck (I.e discussion). Thats pretty much all 40k forums. Everyone is entiled to their own opinion yet you chastise me for expressing mine? Also Im not a troll but if you think I am why would you feed me.. haha.

11. Ferrus Manus

When he was just a lad, he landed on Medusa, and rather than join a clan, he continuously searched out epic physical challenges. Then, he battled down “The Great Silver Worm” and drowned it in magma. With his bare hands. Bad. Ass. When the emperor arrived, Manus fought him and apparently their fight destroyed mountains. Pretty cool. Durring the Heresy, Fulgrim popped up and asked him to join Horus. Manus got pissed and they dueled. Manus was knocked out, and had his hammer stolen. (So from then on, he battled with an epic wrench) Then, Manus had his head loped off by Fulgrim at a later date. Not much else to mention. (pro tip, Ferrus Manus means Iron Hand in latin)

10. Perturabo

Perturabo has some cool things going for him. He is the Primarch of the Iron Warriors, who are one of my favorite Chaos legions. He also came up with the devious Eternal Fortress trap. (more on that later) I’m not a fan of his pre-emperor story (unlike most of the others) He lands on a planet and is taken in by their Tyrant. He showed no affection back to anyone on the planet or his ‘father.’ Then, when the Emprah shows up, he submits and over throws his adopted dad. Jerk. Perturabo was also envious of Dorn, which I think is lame. (Personally, I’d rather be the best Siege Master than the best Defense crafter.) Then, during the Horus Heresy he switches into ownage mode. Horus gives him an epic hammer, and Perty goes and kills 5 million Olympians because they were in a revolt. Holy gak. However, they did realize what they had done was horrible after they watched the pyres. I like that they had a conscious. If it were the World Eaters, they would have been onto the next planet already. Here is where it gets ugly. The Eternal Fortress (aka the Iron Cage) “a keep centered within twenty square miles of bunkers, towers, minefields, trenches, tank traps and redoubts.” After the Iron Fists finally broke through to the keep, they found out it was just a trap. (again) Then, the Smurfs rescued their bros, etc etc. Over 400 Fists were killed, and their gene seeds were sacrificed. There isn’t really a tragedy involved with Perty, just a ton of killing. Kudos to him for destroying the Imperial Fists.

Huh. I always dislike mannus for his purity issues, and peturabo for his whiny ness and dorn rivalry, but they have been sorta redeemed. Here's hoping sangy isn't number 1- I hate perfect carachters.

Perty has some cool stuff going for him, but I'm not a fan of his back story that much.

Angron is good (the only active primarch) but his fluff is somewhat lacking...He is angry. that's about it.

I know. I think he had a great back story, but the rest of his fluff is meh.

He was arguably the greatest military leader of the Crusade (conquered more worlds than any other), enough so that the Emp made him leader of the Imperium's armies in his stead.
For the most part even the other Primarchs thought that it was fair that he be named Warmaster (with a couple of exceptions). His Legion were looked up to as exemplars in almost every example of them we have read so far.
When he decided to turn, he managed to persuade half of the other Primarchs to turn with him, and a whole bunch of the Imperium also. He then ripped the empire in half, and came within a hairs breadth of killing the big E himself, arguably mortally wounding the fighting power of the Imperium for all time and bringing about a slow downward slide into the destruction of humanity itself (or at least civilisation).

Admittedly we haven't read that much about him, and the coverage of his decent into Chaos was painfully short in False Gods, but seriously number 9?

Now that you mention it, Morty should be lower than Horus.
And so should Russ. Actually...

I hated him so much in the books. He just seemed so pretty and useless. Lion El' Johnson was my favorite in that he was a genius. Except for that one stupid mix-up

Well, I have Brunner to finish and both SW omnibuses next, but after that I'll get some. Which goes first?

Lexicanum shows all, but not all need to be readi n order. I recommend A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns. Might make you re-consider the Ksons and Space Puppies... as well as their primarchs.
