Still gotta move more stuff, once things are all settled I'll take some proper photos of the two hobby spaces. I've put paint to plastic a couple of times since last I typed here, but nothing substantial has yet to come of it.
Also we brought home the second little one/jawa/ewok/munchkin/whatever nerds are supposed to call babies... today. I suspect hobby activity and blog updating will drop off even further than they have to this point.
Know that I ordered another Shasvastii on 'accident' while getting a belated gift for my principle (or is it principal in that case?) gaming opponent from miniature market. He seems to have a thing for mutant/super/crazy gorillas and so I ordered about 5 dollars worth of Dust gorillas to paint and gift to him. Those will show up here eventually.
Anyone else excited about bones 3? I really don't have the hobby funds but I'm thinking about doing a dollar pledge and picking out some of my favorite add-ons. The Black Star Corsairs (or w/e, the terran marine/terminators) look cool, as do the crusaders. Plus, as much of Lovecraft's stuff as I've read... I pretty much have to get the Goat, if I get anything. Frost giants also look tempting due to sheer bulk. I think if I can make a reasonably (read that as under a hundred bucks, preferably under fifty) small order.. I may go ahead and pull the trigger.
Still waiting for warpath though my buy in for that will steadily decrease over time till it finally gets here.. just don't need bulk minis anymore.

I'm glad mantic is going to the one weekly email which will cover all of their kickstarters next week. I backed the Dungeon Saga (I hope I did anyway) after the fact and because of that it doesn't show up on my backed project lists, nor do I get the updates, so I keep forgetting about that.
Congrats on bringing thing 2 home . When was the birth as I seemed to have overlooked that . Hope everyone is doing well. Goodbye sleep (should have gone with twins like we did)

I thought they said Warpath was being pushed back to early 2016 ?

Thanks folks.
A single mantic update would be nice.
Theo the 17th brought her home yesterday. Still have crap to move too... Just like last time sigh.
Bones just secured some of my money between shub niggurath and possibly the mythos expansion... We'll see.

Congratulations on the new baby! Boy or girl?
Also, Bones 3 is sweet. I don't need the main set, but the dungeon and lovecraft expansions come with enough monsters that I can't say no.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Thanks. Girl. Which makes 2 of them. I'm outnumbered 3 to 1 now =/ I'm trying to make as small of a buy-in to bones 3 as I can, due to fatigue/overload and other things that need the funds. A whole Cthulu Mythos expansion is soooo tempting though, it will depend on the third chunk and overall value. Some of the first expansion stuff looks cool, but I'll let it pass and pick a few things out at retail (maybe). I think the Black Star Corsairs are worth getting, and the crusaders hit an aesthetic that I like. Plus the shub niggurath, frost giants, maybe one or two other things.

Made a small order, saw Dust was up to 80% off on miniature market, noticed they had giant killer gorillas...
My maindary taking opponent has a thing for crazy gorillas, he's got gangsters, big gorillas with spikey arms...etc. Also seems to like stand punk stuff s bit, so I nabbed a set of 'Sturmaffe' which are killer gorilla assault/engineers apparently. They've got hand held single use(from what I can tell) incendiary weapons and huge jack hammers for ruining tanks. I think they'll fit right in with his other stuff. On sale for $5.50 it was hard to say no. They're quite chunky.
Also more than doubled my order to include a shasvastii Cadmus as he's neat and I'd like to slowly increase the size of that force. Call it stress shopping or whatever

30672
Post by: Theophony
They threw that 80% up last week or two ago. They had 20+of the tenament building for $15. I thought about going nuts and building a Dust City, but thought better about it.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
The gorillas look quality, primed is nice though I'll still have to pick off mold lines in places. I may look the range over s bit as any 5 dollar infantry hits the dollar/mini sweet spot in a decent material. Sci-fi up their guns and get short little projects for mercs.
Bones is adding mostly investigators and historical/steam punk/whatever townsfolkish dudes to their mythos expansion... Considering it but the small minis are pretty affordable at retail too.
30672
Post by: Theophony
If he likes gorillas then there's also the Karmans from at-43 which should also be clearance.
I'm holding off on bones. It's too broad of categories and between retail price and the MM discount I can pick and choose later and save.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I'm kind of agreeing on bones, except for a few addons, I don't want the whole random set. One bones core set is enough for awhile.
The bigger addons do tend to see reasonable discount, the giants and especially Ma'aldrakkar will cost noticeably more at retail, but still no reason to 'buy all the things now'.
At43 huh?

Post by: GrimDork
Yeah, I don't think I'd be as impressed with some of the smaller human infantry as these gorillas. And really, for my own purposes they're pretty useless, but I think my gaming buddy will like them. I believe I'll do two as 'silverback' gorillas and the leader will be an albino, like on the box.
Still got a lot to move and less time than ever, so don't expect much progress
30672
Post by: Theophony
You need more shipping containers...... Call reaper. Then you can pack up all the important things like paint, brushes and models.
Too little time. Seems like typical grown up situations we all run into. I'm still Unboxing stuff from our last move three years ago. Just found my metal space marines. I really need to batch them together to sell them.

Alright, amazon credit card means eventual accumulation of amazon reward points. Dropped 30 dollars worth of them (and 6-7 more out of pocket) to order 3 more shasvastii. I ordered a second Cadmus --this time with a combirifle-- a second malignos, the hacker with combi rifle (which means he's good for like 5 of the 7-8 profiles )... and the Cadmus Agent Naish Sheskiin who's some kind of special character. I guess she did the Morphoscan that Cadmus can do on some butch unit so she's got pretty high characteristics and a fairly potent CC skill (but no martial arts, natural born warrior, iKhol, or other useful things like that) with the added benefit of being able to join any link team within the shasvastii sectorial. So she can have a nice bodyguard of gwailos She's also probably the sexiest Shasvastii... though... I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not
So my Shasvastii are 9/9 for being painted but along with the Cadmus I ordered from MM the other day, this will put me to 9/13. I like my scheme and think it's pretty easy to paint... so hopefully I'll get them assembled and painted sooner than later. As long as I keep the ones I have painted, I'm willing to get more.
Lots more. I want a full team of Gwailos (or at least 4 to chill with Naish). I'd like to fill out at least partial or full squads for several of the other units that can do so, though I don't remember which they are. I think I'm probably good on shrouded and malignos but I don't have any Noctifers and those are too damn cool to pass up:
I also need a Caliban or two, they're like the heavy weapons guys but they have fiendish faces and look even more sinister than shasvastii do in general. Oh and a Haiduk, an entrenched sniper with access to a smart sniper rifle with guided rounds
And the Sphinx! Coolest TAG ever IMO.
Probably forgetting a few things.. and that's just Shasvastii...
I'd like to get a lot of the generic/ EI units too, the part robot stuff like the Skiavoros, Charontid, and Anathematic. I'll wait for a resculpt of the Avatar before I look for one of those. And the new stuff! The new starter is fantastic, I'd have to give the Umbra a proper light saber, of course... but it's a really nice box. I'd also want the extra Batroids I skipped a week or so ago when they were MM's deal of the day... And if I ever buy any Morats I'll end up with all of them... the Daturazi Witch Soldiers are too cool to fool, and the Morats in general are really chunky and imposing. They'd be the last CA things I would get but... I'm warming up to them, really. The Raicho is pretty awesome, big rude thug of a TAG.. much like the lighter Morat infantry.
I also had another random thought...
I'm gonna make myself a Zeram/Zieram model even if I have to build the sucker from scratch.
This space pirate (I think he's a space pirate.. need to watch the show again...) is ridiculously badass and the bounty hunter that takes him out is cool enough to deserve her own model too..
Zeram
Iria with zeram in the background.
I mean Iria practically screams Infinity aesthetic or vice versa... gotta be some model I can use as a base for her.
I kinda forgot how much I liked the show back in the day... gonna have to rewatch and keep an eye out for parts. Zeram may need some serious sculpting, but surely there's a good base model.. either with the cape or with the muscled body to work from. He's pretty big, I think Iria is probably less than 5 feet but zeram is almost twice her size so an Ogre type model may be a good base.
Time for bed anyway.

I love those Dust gorillas, it is just such a shame that the issues over the ownership and distribution of the game makes it difficult to get into. I guess that is less of an issue at 80% off!

I can definitely see a full CA force with a little bit of everything looking really cool. In general I'm more of a Morat/Umbra/Batroid fan than the Shasvestii, but it's all cool.
How about this for the sniper bounty hunter?
For the other guy, I almost think a Fantasy mini of some kind might be the best start, what with the cape/over muscled proportions. Anything suitable in your Bones pile?
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I think you're right about the fantasy mini Para, I'll have to look over my bones collection once it's unpacked. Atalanta hits some of the points, for sure, I think I can definitely cobble Iria together out of Infinity minis... will have do some research.
She's not so much a sniper, she only uses the long rifle sometimes, other times she's got pistols, knives, a retractable sword, and so on. That's a good start though, I'm probably gonna have to kitbash, gotta find one without a skirt..but some of the aleph upper torso stuff and possibly heads may work.
@AoV the Noctifer *does* look like doom... not complaining

That graveyard was very tempting...but as Theophony says it is over a year away (plus high British shipping) so I did not pull the trigger. Maybe once the move is done and the new baby is settled too you can challenge yourself to paint as many minis as is i your pledge before they arrive?

Hell, I backed Bones 3 and all my Bones 2 stuff is still in green and black box it came in. Did get some use out of my Bones 1 figures, and now that I'm playing D&D again, I intend on getting some more use of my Bones collection.
In the mean time, you have about 5 months to catch up on your painting before your bones arrive.

Five? I thought it said like august or something? Yeah says August, and that's with snagging a sneaky wave 2 slot on the last day
Just a bit over a year then, challenge accepted! Though maybe not just entirely bones. Got lots of scifi and misc things to paint.
And scenery. I need to spend less money on models (whoops @bones3 =/), and have a couple of large boxes of scavenged scratchbuilding materials. Soon it will be time to set up shop and overflow my shelves with terrain muahaha.
Office is almost ready to fill with hobby stuff... just need to find the 4th leg for this ginormous office desk (or buy stuff to make a new one...) so I can have all of my surfaces planned out. I'm thinking computer desk, painting desk, and construction/tiny battlefield on the largest desk. Gotta make sure there's room for a bassinet or something so the little one can chill with me while I do stuff (but nothing with fumes or whatever), already given the older kiddo the room right outside the office for a playroom so hopefully I get some space to work

Post by: GrimDork
gak barzam I feel for you on that. My current lair is pretty chill, but I used to live third floor in some apartments and my wife isn't a huge fan of ac lol..
@carlos yeah kinda like that. They live on a spaceship so I doubt there's much literal dirt but still dust and grime, and not likely a lot of water to deal with it. I may retouch the edges and raised/flat parts of the white a bit too, did it for my storm troopers and they cleaned up a bit as a result.
I'd like to power through the custodier and sin eater to finish all primed Nomads. Gonna look into airbrush for panOs, and I need to dig out my hobby knife to clean the new shasvastii.
Also airbrush for bones stuff, hand painting first layer is lame.

We have two window AC units to supplement the old house AC. Our house is 75 years young and the upstairs was originally an attic and not living space. When they brought AC into the house they didn't duct it up to the attic, but later spliced it in. But if we have the ducts open upstairs the rest of the house gets warm quicker, so as the master suite is upstairs we leave the ducts closed and just run a window air unit constantly. It actually has reduced our energy bills since doing that.
Today it's supposed to hit 93F here with a heat index of 106F. So do what you can to keep cool Grimdork. I don't envy you working outside like you do. I did that for 10+ years when I was young.

Post by: Archer
What on earth is a heat index?
30672
Post by: Theophony
A heat index is how hot it actually feels due to humidity, wind (or lack there of) and direct lighting. It's the opposite of a wind chill factor. The humidity has been around 100% the last few days. Grimdork is about an hour or two from me, he gets the weather right after we do.
Wikipedia-
The heat index (HI) or humiture or humidex (not to be confused with the Canadian humidex) is an index that combines air temperature and relative humidity in an attempt to determine the human-perceived equivalent temperature—how hot it would feel if the humidity were some other value. The result is also known as the "felt air temperature" or "apparent temperature". For example, when the temperature is 32 °C (90 °F) with very high humidity, the heat index can be about 41 °C (106 °F)
Basically it is so humid that your body cannot cool itself because your sweat cannot evaporate due to too much moisture in the air.

I can imagine being worn down in this heat wave. The AC in my car has been out for a few years now so by the time I e made my 15 minute drive to work I'm not feeling like doing much.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Ouch... No AC no Bueno.
I saw Barzam say something about getting one of those new resin Nemesis cars for his panO and I got this idea that I'd like to get something like that for all of my... Huh, 4 infinity factions. Doesn't have to be a transport or vehicle, though Nomads having a drop ship makes sense. Shasvastii would be more along the line of spawn embryo and seed pod tokens, but maybe some gnarly biomechanical beasty like a modded tyranid or something...
Car or vehicle works for panO but there's other stuff. Qapu Kualqi could also use a drop ship or something related to space mercinary work.
Just a thought, have you guys got any bright ideas?

Post by: Da Boss
Personally, I would go wall-less for maximum flexibility, but if you're wedded to 3D, I would go for the 2 block walls for ease of access to the minis!
I will be watching this eagerly, whatever happens!

Post by: GrimDork
Interesting take. I'm not sure how much I'm really going to get to use this for RPGs so it's going to end up on my shelf and maybe for pictures and such... given that.. aesthetically pleasing is important. Think of it almost as fantasy skirmish terrain that could also be employed as RPG scenery.
Are you watching Adamsouza's blog? He's doing some pretty cool 2.5D stuff atm.

Post by: Azazelx
Great looking work on the Infinity figure!
As for the walls. I'd go with 2-high. Easier access to the figures not only physically but also with the eye or a camera lens.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Thanks!
Interesting, 2 votes here for 2 high, and on the loer thread 3 high is prevalent.
If I make it 2 high, it'll be harder to do tapestries and hanging prisoners/corpses. Otherwise 2 high is more economical.
I'm also not as sure of doing natural caves so short, May be a little hard.
I'm planning to build several similar structures on that 2x2 foam board, may or may not make the hallways modular, dressing in rooms will be modular for sure. Ideally there will be one or more stairs/trapdoors down, maybe even a legit drop trap or two as well. Anyway the board will theoretically float over the table on some kind of supports and underneath it would go the natural cave rooms and such.
30672
Post by: Theophony
I vote two high for the walls. But you could make your display walls modular so you can emphasize special rooms.
Everyone is making dungeons&dragon terrain or modular hallways, it's getting my mind stirring.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Yeah I may have had the idea before I saw Adamsouza doing it but he must have had the same inspiration cause the timing was close.
It's gonna be hard for me to resolve the shorter walls. We shall see.
29795
Post by: EyeamRai
Another vote for the shorter walls here.
115
Post by: Azazelx
You can always do specific walls higher when needed to show off a feature.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Hmm, that is also a thought. I think I'll start making a floor plan for the dungeon and we'll see what looks best en masse.
But hey hows about some pictures?
Not the strangest things I've ever painted... But probably somewhere close. Gonna gift these to my gaming buddy as I think he will appreciate them more than me. Still plan to dip and matte spray, probably add a bit of rust to the metals.

The monkeys look funky! Seriously, though. Nice work.
5462
Post by: adamsouza
I vote 2 high.
As Azazelx said, you can 3 high in spots like doors or tapestries as needed.
Thanks for the plug BTW.
A note about economy. You can buy a big 1inch x 2ft x 8ft sheet of that pink insulation foam for about $10. Should be enough to make all the wall and floors sections you need for your diorammas, Then basically drawn on the bricks with a razor & ball point pen combo. You can even draw in archways and door frames, etc... It has to be cheaper than buying boxes of those precut bricks.
43382
Post by: Archer
Yep I vote for 2 high for the most part, but use 3 high to accentuate specific rooms or when you want to add a higher feature halfway down a corridor. Will save you a stack of bricks, makes it much easier to handle the models moving around.
The models are looking fantastic. Those gorillas are definitely out there. Which is saying something since we are in a hobby of daemons and space elves.
4042
Post by: Da Boss
I think if you're doing 3 high, you need to make it a bit wider than you otherwise would to facilitate moving stuff around, base overhangs, dramatic poses and so on.
It's doable, and would probably look really great, and if it's primarily for display might be the way to go. If it's for play, then it's probably better to have easier access.
Edit: I am gonna go check out Adam's blog too- I saw the posts about in the Roleplay section and I am totally going to watch all the videos and get way too enthusiastic about it as soon as I have some free time

Love those mad gorillas - what are/they from? Great figs!!
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Wait. There's a roleplay section? It seems kind of stupid that I didn't think that there would be one but... hadn't even considered it till this point May go check it out!
In reverse-ish order...
Januine: They're from Dust Tactics, got them on sale from Miniature Market. I'm not exactly sure what goes on with that game but I think it's basically alternate reality WWII with some higher tech walking tanks and the Germans, of course, get crazy stuff like trained/modified gorillas and even zombies.
The gorillas *are* bizarre, but I think they'll fit right in with some of the wonky gorilla stuff my gaming buddy already has.
Adamsouza: I know all about the insulation foam, although I think my local Lowes variant is a 4x8' sheet for $16 or so at an inch thick. Used to have the 1.5-2" stuff but I don't recall seeing it lately. I may well delve into working with that sooner than later, I've been meaning to get some for various things for a little while now (just gotta do it when I'm using the work truck, as it won't fit in my car and I don't wanna break it down only to realize I wanted a longer piece when I get to working with it..).
If I'm honest, it's actually kind of fun to build with the bricks, kind of like the retaining walls I do for work but in miniature. I'll probably wind up using the foam for the basis of the cavern stuff, and quite possibly for future dungeons... no reason they would use the same blocks in different dungeons, and even different kinds in the same dungeon would be plausible.
I could almost get away without dipping those gorillas but I'm gonna go ahead and do it, just gotta find the charger for my drill's batteries and get that sorted.
More later if I get half a chance! Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, thanks for all of the feedback! As usual, it really helps keeping me moving forward!
30672
Post by: Theophony
I forgot you use the drill to "help" get excess dip off your models. But all I can think about is accidentally sneezing while doing that and the paint station looking like the front row of a Gallagher show.
I think the idea behind DUST was there was an alien race who's technology was found by different nations of the earth and that was reverse engineered to make the walking tanks, lasers and other stuff done to create the gorillas and zombies. That and the arms race leading to WWII created that world. I think they were talking of reintroducing the aliens at some point, but then stupid happened and now all is DUST.
Which just means Paolo will create a third?????company that has pinup girls, intelligent apes and power armored troops that draw heavily upon WWII. ( AT-43 and DUST) being the other two that I'm aware of.

Ahhh that makes sense... I wondered how many people could really like Gorillas *that* much, if it comes from the same person then... sense.
I actually brush dipped the gorillas earlier. I may have even gotten the brush clean with mineral spirits... time will tell.
So talk about poor impulse control... I ordered the CA Ikadron Batroid + Imetron box from MM as it was only 8 bucks. Of course I decided to add the spitfire Noctifer to the order because reasons? So now I've got 4+2incoming shasvastii to build and paint in short order. Still planning to knock out the Custodier and Sin Eater soon too, quite possibly first as they're primed already.
I went ahead and sealed my bones knight/paladin after washing him with reaper black ink rather than dipping...to see if the dip was the likely culprit or if it was, perhaps, the krylon sealer. If I can keep using the Krylon after traditional washes, then so be it, I can survive w/o dipping them.
I also sprayed my second reaper shipping container a nice Ruddy Brown (Krylon, of course), and then foolishly sprayed a short logo onto it with a stencil. Should have waited till I got my airbrush set up again.. it looks bad. I'm just gonna blame underpaid/lazy dock workers though. It's dry already, through the magic of Krylon, but it's probably still stinky. I plan to add rust to the metal on the gorillas later if the minwax has sufficiently cured. If the container is agreeable by then, I'll rust it up as well.
I'm pretty sure my 365/365 goal is dead... I haven't even been keeping track of the model count the last couple of months. I think I was around maybe.. 84 or something? At some point, and then I did Imperial assault with 36 so I should be at least 120 done. I've done several models since then, or well a few. Zero, paladin, 3 gorillas, add in that shipping container after today... Still definitely no more than 130 models at a point in the year where I should have 210 done. Right? 7x30 ish? Yeah close to that, adding a few extra for longer months.
Sooo.. at least 80 models behind and already a couple of days into August. It'll be neat to see where I get, but I'm not so sure I can can pull out of that nose dive Maybe if I could put out nearly a hundred zombicide zombies like Theo in a couple of weeks... Or come near to Paradigm's speed
Don't seem to have any swarms of things that I want to paint at the moment, and doing Infinity singles will not meet the goal by deadline (but I'll be pleased as punch to get them done, don't you doubt!).

Whew... Was chasing around the yard with the little one, we had the aqua sabers out and though she's not quite adept with their usage... Still had to find some dry clothes afterwards..way cooler than water guns. As I was juking around trees and doing defensive rolls I'm kind of exhausted so I'm here posting a photo of this almost-finished warlock instead of finishing him. Just gotta touch up the gold and dip, I think. He's got s story but more on that later.

You can catch to your goal if you bust out some more bones monsters , you must have more orcs, kobolds or other group critters hiding in the boxes somewhere.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Bump from the bottom of last page! @Theo, Well actually I don't have any orcs kobolds or goblins from bones2. Part of what talked me into backing bones 3 was the generic monsters that are useful to have. I do have a load of orcs I got in trade for some surplus marine stuff, Kings of War orcs I mean. Got some unpainted skaven, and loads of snotlings. Been painting the snotlings as smurfs with little greenstuff hats. May even add the KoW orclings as more snotling/smurfs. I need to get the airbrush set back up so I can spray-prime bones minis as that first coat by hand..sucks. Something like this tends to run 60-100 dollars, but the hoses on them are only a couple of feet. I wonder if I could rig up something similar.. I've got some small fans that are similar in size to what this must use (air hockey table, old computer, etc) but I need something that can be used downstairs. I wonder if I could have the fan suck the spray mist into a large (18x18x18 or even 24x or some similarly large dimension..) box that was designed kind of like a car muffler... or like something with baffles. Like a couple of sheets of thin cloth or whatever, and some cardboard baffles, basically suck in the paint and have it hit some screens and materials that will let the air pass through but that will hopefully catch the paint particles? Has anyone else looked into such a thing? I need something that can run independent of a window. I'm pretty sure the air coming out of the compressor isn't going to hurt anyone to breathe, especially after it's diffused into the surrounding air, but I need something to reliably catch the paint particles in terms of preventing overspray staining the walls/ceiling and breathing concerns. Doable, or should I consider setting up the airbrush in a different room with closer window access and just use something like the picture (even if it's home-made)?

Smurf orclings...... ingenious
Is the blue wizard Gargamel's cousin?
My airbrush is still sitting unused, wish I could give you advice on it.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Well I have blue snotlings, have for ages. Using them as goblins but I'm not sure about throwing them at D&D parties... well actually.. yes I am. It would be hilarious
I actually have a Giant that's slotted to become Gargamel someday... one of the two that came in that old dogs of war/regiments of renown 2 giants 1 druid box set. Just never did get along to making the robe. I may actually try it sometime with that plaster cloth stuff, may be easier than using greenstuff on such a large scale.
Not a lot of great photos of them here on Dakka but here are a couple:
The whole lot, I think, though I have many orclings now (they're smaller but so what!), and consider how nicely they'll fill out after you spread them out KoW multibase style...
Best closeup of them I could find. Note the floppy hats and candy cane spears

Noticed that did you? I was funny back in the day, I swear! I had one planned out to have a big present with a large ribbon/bow in his hands, as a goblin fighter character meant to represent Jokey smurf. There was a one use item back in.. maybe it was 6th edition... that goblins could take that gave you +3 strength for one turn. Figured it represented the present pretty well
Anyway, got the cargo container and gorillas sealed so here you go:
Gonna get better photos before I give the gorillas away, though we're trying to get a game in this week so I'll have to do it soon.
Shipping container works, I think I like the blue one a little better and I'm really not happy with the shoddy rushed stencil work... but live and learn. If it grates too hard I'll fix it later, but I doubt it.
Got a few things partially finished that I may push to get done, or I may start on those Nomads. As soon as I'm in a cleaning/building mood I'm gonna put my shasvastii together.
Once I get my office and game room sorted out and get a more accurate portrait of what's going on with shelf space.. I may just make a push to assemble all of my Infinity models so they can stare down at me and judge me 'till I finish them..
Gonna go now, baby baby may be sleeping soon and one of us will have to go to bed as early as possible for the inevitable feeding/holding shift change
Feeling pretty good about the week/end though, I got that Zero done, three gift gorillas, a shipping container out of the way, and a wizard who just needs to be sealed and based.

I bought hundreds of orcs for KOW, each sprue had at least one or king on it. So I've got plenty enough for a smurf village.
They may have to face my terra cotta warriors though as that way we could keep it all fantasy. My guys will be just slightly taller than yours.

I can handle that.. so we're playing 15mm orcs vs giant Japanese statues I really should download my digital KoW book and see how it turned out. I'm not sure I even know when it's coming in the mail.. just got the books and Blaine+gubbins in the $50 set. I think I added some Naiads in the end but they are liable to be in a second wave.

Yeah I only went for the $50 set as well. Planned on possibly adding the Abyssals later when the reopened it, only to be disappointed when they said they are not reopening the PM .
I really like the look of the layout, and there's been a bunch of people happy with it so far, but my kids broke our iPad and it's so hard to read on my phone and I really dislike our other tablet.

You won't get to hand pick, but whenever everything is sorted for retail, the meta army set will probably be almost as cheap as KS prices. Especially during black Friday and other sales.

About the extractor: Get yourself a 20 inch box fan and a pack of those 20"x20"x1 HEPA filters used for Furnaces, these things http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem-20-in-x-20-in-x-1-in-Basic-Household-Pleated-FPR-4-Air-Filter-3-Pack-64300-012020/203140809 Turn the fan on high and place the filter against the intake side. You spray from the intake side. It does work very well indeed. It is what I use. You may want to give it some sides or cut the bottom out of a large cardboard box to create sides and a top, but I never found that necessary. Just don't spray anything but acrylics at it. The filter seems to catch everything. I've never noticed any paint making it through to the fan itself.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Thanks I put a post for this in the painting and modeling thread and someone just suggested the very same thing and it sounds like a winner. Plus side, I already have a box fan (that I won't need here with the central air) so I just need to get the larger filter size to fit it.
It will be nice to have the airbrush setup working again, I think my compressor can go in the leg-space under the mega-desk and I can thread the hose up so as to store the guns at the back of the desk. Might have to reconsider the placement of some things to make the fan work out... but should be pretty easy.
I foresee getting some more bones painted once I get my airbrush running again.

Hmm...
So should I keep investing time and creative energy towards proper 3d dungeon terrain/scenery... or should I just lay off and wait for Dungeon Saga to come with it's double order of tiles. Probably more than enough tiles to cover any regular RPG sessions.
I mean, I'm probably not gonna *use* the scenery I make, or even if I do it would probably be less functional than straight tiles with doors/furniture in 3d... but it does still sound fun. I dunno. In a weird mood today I guess.. got me thinking.
Heck for all I know it would be more fun to play dungeon saga on my fancy 3d terrain anyway.
Gonna keep shuffling things from the garage to the office, maybe paint something.
30672
Post by: Theophony
I'm waiting on Dungeon Saga as well. But with Zombicide I might have my copy sitting on the shelf for a while. 3D terrain is always great, so go ahead and work on yours I'd say, especially if the painting but isn't getting you. If you have any interest in painting though, you'd better stoke that flame before it completely dies out.

Post by: GrimDork
Yeah. I hear you. I tend to paint when I'm even remotely in the mood for it and let myself quit instantly if I feel like I'm getting burnt out. Some scheme are a lot riskier for that. Like my PanO, there's a reason I only have one fusilier done.
I've got the things for my airbrushing trial down here. I just need to dig out the quick connected hose... which means it could be weeks off till I get to start =/ Between that and my hot glue guns (plural, I have 3 and I can only find the micro-tipped gun...), starting to get exasperated.
I think I'm also going to soft-copy my 'modular' gaming table to get my daughter some play tables for all of her little people and imaginex and pseudobarbies.. .and don't forget the horde of paw patrols, oh no! But I'm gonna get a 4x8 sheet of MDF and have them cut it thrice into 2x4' sections like my gaming table. I still need to source something to put it on.. thinking 24" will be about right for my daughter's 37 or so inches of height. Big milk crates would be nice. Trying to source something that is sturdy yet still cheap. I don't want the tables falling over on her if she leans which means I'll need probably 8 support pieces. I know saw horses are things but I dont like pinch points around the kid. I figure this well let me arrange them into a corner section or a 6x6' table with a 2x2' void in the middle that she can occupy like some of the larger model train layouts.

I think given that you have gone through two of the more stressful (albeit ultimately rewarding) life events in a matter of weeks it is understandable that your painting mojo is a bit low.

And given the thread title I was expecting Tables and Laddets and Chairs, oh my!

If your looking for a good base for under the table go to Target or Walmart and get the cube organizers. They come in different shapes and for her size you could get a couple 2x3 cubes and put them underneath, keep your eyes open for a sale on them and save some cash. They go together quick, are coated MDF, and they sell fabric cubes that fit inside of them so she can organize her things under the table. It's also easy for her to pull a cube out and bring it with her for trips to grandmas.
http://m.target.com/p/room-essentials-6-cube-organizer-espresso/-/A-15187076
That's just a quick search, Walmart, lowes, and Home Depot carry similar things and I you keep looking you'll hit a sale, especially with the back to school/college stuff going on.
They can be laid on their side and stacked up too as they have dowel rod spaces in them, which you could use to mount the top to them.

Hmm sounds like a possibility, a good idea of stuff to look out for. Thanks
Put in a little progress on the Custodier and Sin Eater. I have another Sin Eater but I think I'm too far along on these two to clean/assemble/prime him and then catch up painting too. I'll just knock out these two and move on. Their scheme is about the same as the rest of my Nomads, but with pseudo-dracula capes(black outside, orange inside, almost dracula) like the Moira but without her black clothes, I figured I'd leave that a Moira only thing.
I think this will run me out of primed or assembled Infinity stuff.
I still have a bucketful of them to work through... fancy a list o' shame?
Nomads:[12] (possible I forgot somebody but I don't *think* so)
Bran do castro
2 Tsyklon Sputniks
sniper sin eater
spitfire riot girl
icestorm--
3 aglauciles
mobile brigada
reverened healer/killer
spektr
grenzer
PanO[17]
As an aside, some of those PanO's are primed and many of them are part-assembled ready to be primed... but the scheme I chose is tedious at best /sadface.
Icestorm minus a fusilier
2 fusiliers
orc troop
nisse with sniper rifle
akalis
father knight
CSU
4 bolts(cooler weapons)
neoterra starter--
3 bolts
aquila guard
swiss guard
hexas with spitfire
QK(also technically haqqislam)[11]
3 ghulams
4 kaplan tactical services
4 sekban (naval something or another)
(these guys can borrow the aglaciles and brigada too)
Shasvastii(also CA)[7]
2 cadmus
malignos with combi rifle
agent cadmus naish sheskiin
ikadron batroid
imetron (technically CA vanilla only)
noctifier with spitfire
Holy freaking crap. 47 Infinity models to paint? Where the helldamnfart did those all come from!?
I mean...crap.
And that wasn't accounting for the two I've got on my painting tray right now, and the one I finished last week...
I do have let's see.. 1 panO, 9 shasvasti, 9 nomads(13 with koalas, which I guess should count) are done so that's...23 done out of.. nearly 70 total.
When did this happen? I mean. These things cost almost 10 dollars a piece, when did I get them all? I mean I know the first wave of shasvastii were post gencon madness. And icestorm was also part of that... that's only a portion though.
Sheesh.
I had uhh... I had better not tally up the models I have for other things. I'll lose it.

Post by: GrimDork
The problem I run into is that the brushes tend to book and split. My series 7's didn't hook but both spilt after less than a year and no amount of old fashioned brush soap or 'so angry at paint that it'll eat the stuff right off the handles of your brush' Windsor and Newton cleaner has had any luck fixing them.
So now I'm back to cheapo brushes that fail in a few days /sigh.
I can get all of the Infinity done, and I expect to sooner or later.

Post by: Red Harvest
You need to upgrade to a Spreadsheet o' Shame, good sir. You won't "lose it". It is sobering and therapeutic and beneficial. Mine tells me that I have acquired too many minis for Infinity and D&D without paint. So now I am motivated to paint, and not buy.
Icestorm/GenCon deal and Yojimbo really jacked up the Infinity total for me.

For the table, you should consider something that can be easily modified. While it might be the right size for your little one now, sooner or later you are going to blink, and she’ll be a foot taller, I know you said you don’t want sawhorses, but they can be easily adjusted with longer lumber as needed. If you use cubes as a base, you might want to choose a size that you can add more of to get to a comfortable hight.
Nice inventory. I should start taking stock of what I’ve got primed myself. As I still rely on the great outdoors to prime, I need to make sure I have enough minis squirreled away to last the winter. And if stuff needs to be built, I need to start now.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I haven't even got that stuff primed or assembled for the most part, that's the 'all everything' list. Primed up is just 3-4 PanO but I tend to prime with the airbrush at least half of the time (and basically all the time in the winter).
So.
PSA
Testors Dullcote Lacquer (in the bottle) is freaking fantastic. It dries in seconds. It's flat. It isn't tacky. I can dip my bones and cover them in this stuff, and they will not be tacky.
I'm a bit ecstatic atm.
That evil nun? How can I describe her before... man, I'm probably gonna go to hell for this... the nun felt like she was covered in a thin layer of syrup. After the dullcoat, I can touch her without ... damnit no, it's just too inappropriate...
The nun was very tacky. Now, the nun is not tacky at all and makes for a fine gaming piece. Perhaps she will join the undead cowboys or resume command of another league of her own.
Yay!
No pictures atm, I'll maybe put one up of the rescued bones models after the fact. Crap... I may have to bust some of these guys out, though I still need to find my airbrush hose with the quick connects attached.

 inappropriate nun discussion
I might have to check out the restore dullcote, I've heard others talk about it now that you remind me.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Well... I was gonna have to use the word sticky in relation to talking about touching a nun and... well yeah I decided not to go there.. of course now I kind of did in a roundabout way.
I mean, the stuff works as a brush on sealer straight from the pot too, doesn't have to be fixing anything.
One drawback, though, is that (like most testors stuff, iirc) the stuff is noxious. I don't like to be in the same room with an open bottle without my mask on. But it gets results. For damn sure.
So I saw someone had cobbled together a small-medium Forces of Nature army from their reaper bones 2 minis, all of which I also own. I may have to copycat them +/- some changes. It was stuff like a unit made of all of the baby dragons plus an elf or something behind them herding them forward. The shark man counting as a nature spirit (water) or some other gribbly thing. Gnolls and bugbears taking up slots as lesser elementals, etc. Of course they're working on an 'additional races' book with 9 more armies and 'The Herd' is a beastmen army so that may work better for stuff like gnolls/bugbears.
But given how modular KoW armies are with allies and stuff.. I can really just pump out clusters of units to be bolted together to make armies. Like right now I've got 3 skaven/ratmen units on my desk and just 2 KoM units and 1 regiment of skeletons, so the men have employed the necromancer in charge of the skeletons and it's an even fight (for now!).
I'm glad I ordered some of the Naiads from the kickstarter. I like their rules in game. They're basically light/squishy infantry but they regenerate (4+, so basically 50% of their damage goes away each movement phase) so you've got to sweep them in a concentrated attack or they may stick around harder than you'd expect for a light unit. I've got a bunch of underwater monsters from bones2 that will go well with the Naiads. I'm also thinking up a couple of ways to use the Kraken from my bones2 for KoW. I'm thinking.. to use it as a regiment, or possibly the largest monster you can get in the list, depending on the size/powers of each..whatever is strongest basically. But anyway, modeling wise I'm gonna dump the boat and either use a water effect (real water or w/e it's called?) in a half-sphere (like the lid of an ICEE or something to mold it) with a wizard (hands raised to the air) conjuring the water to keep the Kraken floating around in the battle. Or possible just find a good way to sculpt waves and have a wizard more or less surfing (or riding a dolphin or something) in the Kraken's wake, magicking up the water.

Once I get the airbrush done, I'll be more in the mood to experiment/paint with it. I still can't find my fugging quick connectored hose, and I can't get the teeny airbrush sized connectors (1/4 or maybe 1/8" even) in town so I've got to find it.
I think I've got some realistic water stuff.. and if I don't then I'll figure something out. I really want the Kraken to work as a playable model and I think the levitating in a too-small fishbowl/riding summoned waves will work. I'm not sure which I like better. Maybe the fish bowl one. Though I wouldn't be opposed to the surfing thing for cavalry or water elementals etc.
Sin eater and Custodier are getting close. I have 5 more previously bought Nomads that don't come from Icestorm left to do: Bran do Castro (gene-modded Morlock character, got some monkey aspects), a sin eater with sniper rifle, the spitfire Riot Grrrl (still trying to decide if I wanna do the Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 scheme with a link of them or not...), and the two Tsyklon Sputniks. And everything in Icestorm, of course. But one project at a time!
I need to paint some quick/easy/mass/small/whatever stuff soon too, just because.
Gonna check my finances and see about getting some bases I guess.

Yeah, I'll have to find something to put the invisiwater in, and triple check the materials to which it will and will not stick. Gotta paint the Kraken first though. Which I can now do, what with having found a bag full of literally everything I was missing and nothing else. How convenient... Three of my Moderators are claiming the discovery but I'm pretty sure they didn't have anything to do with it. Now that I have my hot glue guns, drill battery/charger, and air hoses... I can get to some more heavy duty stuff than just brushwork.

More thoughts on KoW. So I know Azazel does his KoW units as 12 25mm round bases on a movement tray. I would like to soft copy the idea to integrate bones models into my KoW regiment bases but such that they can come back out for DnD. Pictures to follow. First is source idea. Next has X's where KoW skeletons will be glued to base. I've hit upon what seems like a devastatingly simple way to accommodate the round bases. The only drawback is that I'd destroy the base trying to mount all 12 like that. So the second photo shows a compromise. Gonna keep working on this but feedback is greatly appreciated!

http://www.hobbylobby.com/Scrapbook-%26-Paper-Crafts/Accessories-%26-Tools/Punches/1%22-Paper-Shapers-Nesting-Circle-Punch/p/13843
A 1" circle hole punch. Works beautifully on paper and cardstock. The stuff I'm using to make my bases out of is a bit thicker and you've really got to wrangle the punch and material but so far so good. It's great for making custom tokens with those bottle cap stickers. I suspect you could also punch "Invisibases" out of that thin blister/clamshell plastic too, but I haven't tried it.

I had one, similar to that, but it broke the first time I tried to cut through cereal box cardboard with it. I've seen people hammer sharpened plumping pipe through stuff, but I've yet to find a method that works better for me than just using an exacto/scalpel blade.
You could just draw the circles on where you want the bases to fit and just build up around them with putty, card, sand, flock, etc..

I made that last comment, before seeing the pictures.
That looks pretty good.
I may have to try that so my skeletons can serve double duty.

Post by: GrimDork
That might also work, but so far the punch is toughing it out. I will probably put a little sand/flock/spackle on the punched second layer of card, and maybe just a super thin coat on the bottom of the base sockets so I can paint them to look the same (and therefore show up the same through the clear bases). That's pretty much why I'm trying this out. I don't want to hesitate to paint stuff. If I know I can make models fit into bases later, I can just bust them out base them and set them aside. I can work them into bases later, just so long as I have a method that will work out. Do note that the one on the left is just with everyone glued down. I think for this base I'll probably glue the integrated-base mantic guys down after they're painted and then slop the spackle around. With only 5-7 models on the base, I should be able to hand paint it pretty quickly without messing any of them up. Ideally I would be able to airbrush the tray, but I think I can more convincingly integrate the mantic skeletons if I do it that first way I mentioned. I may also see about cutting the mantic skeletons off their integrated bases as it would give me a little more breathing room in terms of positioning them, and they'd also wind up being exactly the same height as their removable peers. Plus.. then I could airbrush the base before hotgluing down the mantic skeles. The trick with that last bit being that those bases are kind of hard to shuck off without damaging the skeletons!

Damn Theo those look nice And pretty cheap. Do you just strike the top end or something? The only thing I'm seeing is it caps off at 3/4" which is one size too small, but it's a look in the right direction.

Well... if it cuts leather then surely...
And the 32 is nice for the new space marines too.
Just dipped Envy and Hex, you'll have to wait till they're sealed to know what I'm talking about though.
Gonna spend any remaining hobby time today working on lacquering my remaining sticky bones models and on sorting out this multibase thing.

Should be faster and easier than using a punch of any sort, if it isn't overkill. For $2.12, I'm willing to find out.

Sounds like it'll cut through most anything that isn't metal. May tear up something soft like paper/cardstock but then again it may not. My only experience with hole saws saw the material get pretty abused but.. meh, probably had the wrong thing anyway. Let me know how it works Also was thinking about my Daughter's table that I had mentioned earlier. Can't find anything the right height for the supports. Was thinking getting a 4x8 sheet of plywood or similar and having that cut into 8 2x2' sections, and then cutting down some 2x4" boards to make legs to go between two of the flat sections. Basically making oversized end tables like you'd use in the living room to set drinks on. But then 4 of those in a larger square formation to receive the 4 2x4' MDF sections. I could also probably get some flat thin board/particle/even reused cardboard and make the little tables into kind of square shelves where she could keep her little dudes. And given the cost of plywood, 2x4's, and nails... this is still cheaper than anything else I've come across. What would really make my day is finding pre-cut 2 foot lengths of board as that's a lot easier than me trying to cut them all off perfectly 24"... will have to fish around.

You can get the punch in a 1", I'm just at work now and can't look it up right now. But I bought that set and then the 1" separately. You get to release your frustrations by hitting them with a hammer. Dsteingass was the original finder of these and I saw it on his old thread and made it one of my must buys. Cuts plastic card great.

Yeah... I'll probably get a set sometime. One of those things that's good to use to eat up any cash someone gives me as a birthday/x-mas thing. Got the Infinity models done, just gotta base them. Wizard is getting based too. Ordered more bases, 375 total in 3 sizes... Sheesh, 90.55 shipped. Oh well, should do for quite awhile. This rebasing project really has me fired up to finish another batch or two of skeletons, zombies, and miscellaneous undead. Got some stuff set out to clean, but I've also got 10 mantic skeletons already cleaned and assembled. Gonna try to find a safe and reliable way to remove their integrated bases as that will allow them to sit level with anything on the clear bases in their slots. Infinity model photos here in a moment.

More nomads!
Both of these guys are with the Observance, part of the/a religion/cult that's big in Bakunin (and probably elsewhere on the Nomad ships, not really too immersed in the fluff yet). The big guy is a Sin Eater, I get the idea that they're kind of like the crazy albino monk from the Da Vinchi Code. I'm calling him Envy, but what's he jealous of I wonder. Sin Eaters have some heavy duty upgrades that allow them to react preternaturally fast, but it makes them a bit slow when it comes to taking the initiative and acting on their own. The gal on the right is Hex. She's a Reverend Custodier and which is basically the elite hacking/info warfare corps of the Observance. Basically surviving what she does for a number of hours puts them up at veteran status (I guess it's hard work!) so she's pretty young to be so good at what she does. I love that the pose has her pulling out some cables (presumably from the back of her head GitS style) to jack into a system. She's also got a marker underslung on her combi rifle which is kind of like a WiFi extender. Anything within a certain range of a planted marker will be something she can reach out and touch with her hacking skills.
I've got just one more Sin Eater to do, but I do have the Reverend Healer as well. Still contemplating picking up the other Custodier sculpt to make a 3-man link team with Hex and the healer. Distantly considering picking up the 4 moira box too, but I kind of like the other observance models a little more than them (though the new moira look is still awesome and superior to the one I've got already).
Probably gonna clean up my remaining two Sputniks next as entries in Paradigm's painting challenge for this month. I might feel froggy and finish the last 3 nomads (that aren't from Icestorm) or I may change my mind and do something else after that. I've got a lot of primed models and the airbrush is technically back in working order so I could do anything.
Oh almost forgot, here's that warlock finished and on his base:
And all 3 recent nomads for good measure:

Good stuff! Bakunin is a wierd one for me; the Observance stuff is awesome but I'm not a fan of the mutant-people or moderators don't do a lot for me. Might have to grab some Revs and Sin Eaters at some point for vanilla lists.

Thanks guys
Should be working on at least a couple more Infinity minis in the near future, as well as a regiment or two of Kings of War just to make sure I've got the new tray layout sorted.
@Para, I like the mutant-people (uberfallkommando, Morlocks) maybe the most, even though I don't have any. And the Moderators have really grown on me from the beginning. I do like the Observance stuff, obviously, and if I actually played I would probably want to run a mostly/all observance list sometimes just for fun. But I definitely like the whole of Bakunin. I'm more like you when it comes to Corregidor, the whole lot is pretty, but I'm pretty much just interested in their sexy TAGs and a couple of individuals.
Bleh work week incoming. Dunno if it's gonna be hot, or rainy, both, or even mild. Still in August so I expect at least some heat, though I'd prefer it to be within tolerable levels! Looking forward to fall. Still gonna try to chip away at some models as the week progresses.

I think I'm officially staying away from infinity for a while. I jumped in with "the big explosion" (of GW expatriates), but they've been sitting unattended and my main gaming buddy has NO interest whatsoever.
I know your pain on the heat in August, your not far away from me and I've worked outside enough during those months. Just don't over work yourself with it. What do you do during winter time if you don't mind me asking? I'm sure you've mentioned it, but brain ain't working right now.

Your Observance are looking really good. I still can't decide if I'm a fan of their look, though. The Sin Eaters do seem like they'd be pretty useful. You've got both of them now, right? Which one would you say is the better sculpt? The HMG or the sniper?

If there's an HMG sin eater, I don't have it. I have the MK 12 that comes in the starter and the multisniper from a blister, but they're the same pose with different arms. If I recall, the HMG guy is actually aiming his gun but maybe looks a bit different. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Look how tiny those orclings are! Even the snotling is 2-3x their size I don't think I'll be using these 1-1 for models on a multibase... probably just sprinkle them around to make the 12-15 snotlings I use in a regiment look more filled out.

Yeah, the twin-weapon skeleton pose is a little lame. Really good sprues though, next one of those I may angle him a bit more.
I don't think the Orclings will get hats, they have to earn them in battle! Well some of them have hats but I'm talking about the white caps.
@Josh, thanks I'm working on two Sputniks right now but I'm gonna have to paint something simpler sooner or later as these kind of exhaust me Automatically Appended Next Post: Got one sputnik ready to be mounted on pins for painting. Gotta do the other yet. If I get ambitious I may try to do the batroid and imetron beacon and make a small diorama of an ambush but I doubt I'll have time. Dug up some KoW/ dnd friendly heroes, some will need bases. That's OK, I've got nearly 400 coming...
Gonna have a crap load of rebasing to do too. I have upwards of 30 gcps sanctioned zombie marines to do, as well as everything from mars attacks so far. Over 50 models with just that. And several fantasy minis and bones will be getting the new bases too. I'll order more 25mm bases as necessary, but the 40s and 55s I hope last... They're pricey.

How thick are the bases? Just out of curiosity. I take it the edges from what I have seen are polished? Do they have any angle on the edges or are the square? And finally is there a little radius on the top edge?

Post by: GrimDork
@Theo it might be possible to do the bottlecap sticker thing that was discussed several pages ago. Basically pop those stickers off their backing and plop them down on the other side and cut them out. Would take more time but not a crazy amount. I think those sticker things have the potential to yellow over time though and if the plastic ever got somehow removed from the bottom they'd pick up dust with their sticky side. Could be significantly cheaper though.
@Archer you can get clear acrylics in 1.5, 2, and 3mm so far as I know. 3mm is standard GW thickness but I think the 1.5 is much better at that not being noticed thing. 2 is just the size some companies make them (thinking maybe fenris or w/e).
I dunno if the edges are polished or if that's how they look when they get lasered or whatever it is they do to them. But they are smooth. They're sheer, perpendicular to the ground with no tilt in or out. So basically they're 25mm across on the top and bottom. Or 40, or whatever they're cut at. No bevels.
I think some people have been know to cast a GW base in clear to be 100% above board but meh, I don't play that game anyway.
Too hot and too late today, no hobby stuff.
I do have like 12 primed smurfs though... gonna knock those out sometime soon and make them into a KoW regiment. Probably generously sprinkle in orclings (smurflings) to help pad the unit size visually. Maybe some mushrooms

Brief update, don't mind if it auto appends..
Looking at my Smurfs... I can't remember if I had 2 or 4 blocks.. maybe 3. If I have 60 regular smurfs I should be able to spread them out over 5 regiment bases. Actually... I may do some figuring as I'll need some Troop bases (10 models) to sort out legions of smurfs as those are 10 models wide and 6 deep. You can make hordes by combining two regiments but to turn a horde into a legion, you've got to add two troops to the back of a horde. So I need some troops lol.
12 each is a bit low even with larger models, which the smurfs are not, but I plan to bring the head count per regiment to at least 20 with additional smurflings (using the KoW orclings). I don't necessarily want to bogard all of the snotlings for this purpose, and that's why I'll be aiming to put 7-10 per regiment instead of just flooding all available space.
I'll probably use any remaining smurflings to help bulk out scratch built war machine crews, and to add flavor throughout the army. There is no swarm unit in the goblin army like orclings on the orc list.. and I don't necessarily want to ally them in just for that role. I may consider making a swarm or two of smurflings... actually... there's a plan. I can take the orclings and fill out the 100x40mm troop trays that will go on the back of the hordes to make legions. Just pack I dunno 15-20 of them on there as they're so tiny.. but surely 2 for 1 model that would normally be on the base should work. I can use them as throw away goblin rabble troops when I don't want legions, or make two of them into a regiment.
It's sounding like I should be able to field an option of up to 7 regiments, three hordes and a troop, or two legions with a backup regiment. To get upwards of four troops of orclings/smurflilngs I'm probably gonna have to see what Theo has in reserve and what he's looking to trade for some of his, but totally worth it. If I paint a hundred orclings, my painting numbers will skyrocket
I'm also still planning to make one of my giants into Gargamel eventually... several scratch built war machines... I've found my 3 bones fungus men/myconids and while it'll be a bit of a stretch... I think I can base them in a way as to represent trolls. Tough, hitty (spores?), and regenerate all seem to make sense there...
I may scavenge the smurfs off my chariot to try to make a unit or two of sharp sticks somehow, which can imply a horde/legion by being in the front, or not do that by being in the rear If I do that, I'll probably just try to source another large smurf to use as a goblin king (papa smurf) riding the chariot as that's an option and the rabble will need inspiration.
I've been digging out some nicknacks to paint and will get to them as time permits. Automatically Appended Next Post: Hmm actually closer to 90 snotlings, so I could do more like 7 regiments of 12 (with bonus orclings) though that will eat up most/all of my current orcling stock.
Also I have enough for 3 troops of fleabag riders (12, but space them out to take up the space of 5 x3) so I can get troops or a regiment and a troop of those.
I found a bones goblin leader to go in the chariot. He's a bit huge compared to the snotlings but I figure if I give him the same hat and paint his clothes red people will get the idea. Size is usually a quality of leadership in orcs and goblins anyway...
Yeah... I'll wait till I'm further along in the project and actually need them, but I think I'll have to see if Theo's got some spare orclings

70053
Post by: GrimDork
Bwahaha. Right? And without the white caps (and pants), they really don't look much like smurfs anyway.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
So I'm gonna take a page from Azazelx's book and count retouched models against my progress total. Below are 13 smurfs (the snotling component of my first rabble regiment and a wiz) and an explorer/scout(rogue) from my bones collection. I like the explorer, he looks ready for action but isn't mid swing in some OTT dynamic pose. While he lacks the social graces of a roguish type, you'll find no one better suited to get your group through a deadly dungeon.
I need to paint up a 100x80 mm regiment base for the smurfs, and then 10 or so orclings to go with it. I'll probably just dip the grots on the base like other bits of scenery.
So I guess 128+14 is 142. Working on it.. I'm gonna drop the photo idea... Too many edits, too little time.

I've got a crapton of Bones adventurers. I think I parsed them out into 4-6 man parties and ended up with seven or eight groups. I've got at least 40 stinking adventurers to paint, so that's a good part of it I suppose he'll serve as a party rogue if I ever get to play D&D. If I ever get around to making that dungeon scenery like I was talking about, he'll probably feature in that and I'll see about working something out the. Also, probably useful for custom games of Dungeon Saga once that comes in, I believe it has rules for creating your own heroes. Since those smurfs are curing, I think I'll get to work on their regiment base. @Archer, haha thanks They amuse me as well. I really want to get them onto regiment bases and paint the unpainted smurfs so I can theoretically play games with them some day. The little buggers aren't as cheap as they used to be on eBay (or just off the shelf, I mean you got like 20 of them in the blister so even 20 bucks was reasonable) so I'll have to source something else if I ever want to expand. Automatically Appended Next Post: Bad news sports fans, it looks like i only have 50something orclings. I think I'll just have to reign in my plans for a bajillion regiments of smurfs to something more reasonable. Maybe pack an extra smurf or two onto the bases and spread the orclings out a little further.
Still, will have several blocks and it's not like I don't have a boat load of orcs to ally with the smurfs. The Blue Moon tribe, normal orcs but maybe with some blue war paint.

Had to look up holiday world, looks very similar to six flags here in Missouri. That should have been a great time for her to enjoy. Last time we took my kids I couldn't go on half the rides as I'm too tall and the shoulder restraints couldn't come down far enough, or my legs were too long and the chest bar could t come back and lock in place.

Post by: GrimDork
I'm kind of tired of rides myself. I got my wife to go on the baby roller coaster and such.
Holiday world is similar but different. The main cost is the ticket, you get free parking and the access to the water park is also free. They've also got gratis sun tan lotion stations and Pepsi Oasises where you can get Pepsi products as the day is long free of charge. Pretty much all you might pay for is food, a locker at the water park, and souvenirs.
I think today was the busiest I've ever seen the place, but the kiddie rides didn't have much in the way of lines. The lazy river was basically a traffic jam so we chilled in the wave pool instead.
Was a bit tricky leaving as there was a storm warning and the poor kiddo had two leave two separate rides on the way out as the storm/threat level escalated. She had fun overall so we're glad we went.
Hopefully I can manage the kids and house stuff and still get a bit of painting in. Itching to make some more progress. I'm afraid them MM summer sale thing on Tuesday is gonna be a problem so I better make some strides to lessening the pile!
Oh BTW, this week/months book humble bundle is for D&D comics/graphic novels. I think you get 20 or so for 12 bucks. I've already finished the two included Drizzt origin books, almost wanna pick up the third bug I've read the actual book more than twice...
Looking forward to trying the other included series but I'll probably finish my current Garret, PI book just because.

Are those models mounted on pushpins? That's a nifty way to paint before basing. I will have to give it a try.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Oh well, maybe they won't put anything we like on sale!
@Josh, yes, regular old push pins. I've got some fancy pins that are a bit longer and narrower which are *meant* for mounting/corkboarding/etc, but obviously I didn't find those in a timely manner. The stouter push pins work better for bones anyway as you can just push them right into the soft material.
The pins holding up the metal infinity parts had to be dremmeled off flat and inserted into a pin vice hole (with glue).
I'm probably gonna put the bones models on to blue tacked gw paint pot lids like usual as the pins are pretty narrow and sort of uncomfortable to hold for long. The infinity pieces, however, will stay as there isn't much else to do that's better. At least not so far as I've found.

Yeah, I suspect i'll have hidden things for awhile. I believe I've found most of the *important* hobby related stuff. And my computer is running so I don't think I'm missing anything there
Meh. Gonna go rattle can prime this movement tray. I have a brief window to airbrush but I'd rather the paint stay on this thing than chip off in seconds. Still not a fan of airbrush priming unless it's the dead of winter and there are no other choices (like bones, or I really need the ultrasmoothest coat evar).
May then paint on this dwarf, or perhaps spray my remotes.

I think you just talked me into priming some buildings to use for Zombicide. I wasn't going to, but all this talk about rattle cans...
I haven't bothered with trying to get my airbrush going in months, but I was constantly messing with it and never getting the hang of it.

Airbrushes and their compressors can be a complete pain in the rear. Sometimes not even worth messing with it. But it does let me do some stuff that would be inconvenient or difficult otherwise, and helps for priming in the winter. Need to find a new white primer I like though.

Yeah, I just never could get the spray right, the one time I did then the gun gummed up on me. The brushes are working fine for me right now, so I'll just do it the old fashioned way.

They're tricky, sometimes it's all I can do to undercoat things with them. Certainly, I still don't have a handle on painting models to look good as so many people seem to have...but sometimes I can at least get more than one base coat color down or apply a simple OSL kind of thing.

Guys, two things. Keep the paint thin, and keep the airbrush clean. That covers 98% of the troubles. A bent needle is 1.5% and the remaining 0.5% is just the universe bending you over a barrel.
Barzam wrote:I wish I had some remotes. But, your pic is reminding me that I need to bust out my Mag Guard and redo it. I had nearly finished it before I moved, but the move itself got it busted apart and the paint all scratched up. Enough so that I might as well just strup it and start over.
I'm also both looking forward to and dreading the MM sale.
Beware of the Nomad Remotes. Exercises in Frustration. Pan-O remotes, the Dronbots and the Armbots go together very well, as do the Haqq Kameels. Get Mags re-done before the new one comes out

Even the Zonds? They seem like they'd be easier ones to do. I'll get back to the Mag... eventually. At least it seems like I've got plenty of time. CB doesn't seem to be in any rush to get the new one out.

That's what the Russians said . I know they are great useful tools, but I really need a class or something to work them out.
Bye-the-bye, miniaturemarkets sale finally started, still having issues, but at least the list pops up. Not a whole lot, some of the older infinity models, pathfinder and reaper figures too. But nothing that grabbed me.

And only ~50% of the order was summer sale stuff... The main thing I wanted was under 20 and ticking down as I watched...

Yeah I know, I know. Obviously I ordered *even more* infinity... /sigh.
I've been wanting a TAG for a long time. Geckos are cool. You can take 4 geckos in corregidor. 4 geckos, 5 auglaciles, and one odd dude make a perfectly legal/ITS-viable 300 point list.
So yeah.
That's what I ordered: 2 gecko boxen as they were better than half off, TAGs (even small ones) for 13.50 a pop is pretty sweet; the SWC/special weapons box set of Auglaciles because I only have 3 now and needed to have some options to make the list (even though I may never play it) viable/versatile/fun. Oh and Senor Massacre. I haven't really been exposed to very much Deadpool, but what I've seen, I've liked. The list basically needs a 0 SWC distraction between 10 and 30 points and Massacre fits the ticket.
Everyone is gonna get painted white to match the rest of my Nomads but Massacre will have a very not-deadpool scheme, it's his job to be distracting anyway
I'm gonna have to do some conversion on these guys. More than any Infinity stuff so far. The geckos will get their two boxen spliced to offer maximum variance in poses. I may even include some off-spec hardware just to make them special snow flakes.
The Auglaciles are gonna do some arm/hand/gun swaps with existing Nomads in my collection. The missile launcher probably doesn't have any other home so that one will stay stock, and the light grenade launcher is pretty cheap so I'll probably live that one alone. The heavy machine gun and multi sniper rifle will probably be swapped out if I can find anyone to take them who can trade a combi-rifle. As long as I do one swap I can make the list (5 augls with combis, and or one with a LGL. The HMG may be affordable too so I may find a way to make that work).
I think the Spektr I have can have the MSR and comes with a combi so that's probably happening. Beyond that I don't know.
I also nabbed the ADHL Prowler to join my Bakunin/general Nomads because I needed to break free shipping. It cost like 2 extra dollars to add him on over what I would have paid in shipping.

Sounds fun. Wish I new you were needing geckos as I had picked up a box for $20, and then got the replacement parts for it. Oh well, one day we will have to play it, guess I'll need to start on my PanO.

I have no idea how viable the list would be, only that it is legal. I mean the Geckos themselves are basically heavy infantry with extra TAG-based weaknesses and fairly light weapons (combi rifle with an extra shot, or MK 12 which isn't bad but it's not an HMG or HMC). I think they're not terrible for the points as long as you watch out for electronic warfare and enemy hackers, they only have BTS3 so that's probably the easier vector by which to attack them. I could have picked up a clockmaker to support them with his engineer skill but... yeah... I'm pretty sure that any turn my opponent is trying to kill one or more of the Geckos... he's gonna do it all the way down to riddling the pilot full of holes once he pops out. I figure them having to waste an inordinate/inefficient amount of firepower to do so is the goal. They're also not as fast as bigger tags. Basically HI with some extra weaknesses for their big size and TAG specific countermeasures, and with no ability to link. A 5-man mobile Brigada time would probably be stronger but... 4 Geckos is gonna look sweet So I'm combing the unit profiles PDF to look for potential transplant candidates for my Alguaciles. The only other model I have that can take a missile launcher is the Grenzer, and he would be trading back a multi sniper rifle so that's basically pointless. Lots of people could take the HMG, but that's probably the strongest single option for a special weapon in the Alguacile link. The Spektr can totally take the MSR, though he still only has BS 12 and it would make him pretty expensive in terms of SWC. Though, given that he'd go into a generic/vanilla list anyway, I could probably work around it. Plus TO sniper makes sense to me, leave the close work to Spooky and her regular camo. Hmmmm.... just redid the list in a less panicked state. Turns out to be legal *none* of the alguaciles can have special weapons. I can get a paramedic and a forward observer as they have no SWC, but the LT costs 1. Balls. I should still be able to model it correctly, just disregard the LGL upgrade to the one combi rifle and convert the sniper... but meesh. I mean. I guess I'm ok with it. The thing was to have a list that's at least playable with 4 geckos and a alg link made the most sense for backup under 90 points lol. I could also always drop one of the Geckos and add something different back in like the Mobile brigada or something. He could totally be the LT. Just to switch stuff out, on the off chance I got to play enough to need to do so. Meh, maybe I'll turn it over to the army list pros of the Infinity sub forums. Oh and about playing the game someday... I'm sure if you could get 3 fusiliers and 1-2 backup units you'd have all the models we could possibly figure out in a given day for the first time Seasoned gamers or not, I think Infinity really benefits from a slow progression of rules integration.

The main hitch is that the best/only way to get a combi rifle Wildcat is through the starter (and then you get 3, and 5 other models I don't *need*). Slippery slope much? Enough points to fit Senor Massacre back in, as well as fully outfitting the alguaciles with two forward observers, a paramedic, an HMG, and a light grenade launcher. I'd maybe rather have the missile launcher but it's hard to fit much in when taking so many TAGs, even if they are mini-tags. Other options include taking the ML with an alguacile hacker (make use of those forward observers and their repeaters, plus help defend the Geckos...). Hmm so... The army lists are a reason I haven't gotten deeper into infinity, I just look at them and think the game is still in Spanish as I have no idea what half of it means.
I swung by MM yesterday to see if there was anything new in the dinged and dented section worth the money. Lately I haven't seen anything worth while.

I had something typed out about the army lists being pretty simple but I was about halfway through that particular dissertation when I noticed my daughter was crying (we were at the park). Turns out there were some fething wasps under one of the pieces of equipment and she got hit a few times before I could get to her (only a couple of feet away but she didn't see them till she got stung anyway). We did the baking soda thing and got some benadryl into her, fortunately her Nana lives extremely close to that little park. Doesn't seem allergic and is pretty chipper atm for getting stung more than once. May have to take her out for a toy and some icecream later since she's being such a trooper... Anyway, the army lists are pretty simple. Every type of unit technically comes from it's own military unit/squad/whatever and each profile is effectively just different gear one of those guys can have. Names should be self explanatory, and the guns are pretty simple and fairly similar with just some slight difference in damage output and the range at which they're best employed. Some units get special abilities but those are really easy to google, same with the different types of ammo. SWC-special weapon cost, is just another resource you gain at the rate of 1 per 50 points of army list (could be a table but I know its 6 at 300 pts so the math follows...) and you can only legally take lists that have a total SWC between all models up to your limit. First list is kind of jumbled so skip it for a minute. I'll break down the third one as it may be my favorite at this point: Mobile Brigada is just the heavy infantry that comes in Icestorm, he has a profile with the stock weapon that allows him to be the lieutenant. Multi rifle can shoot special ammo types but its pretty similar to the basic guns, this guy is pretty simple. Two of the three geckos have MK 12's which are like.. i dunno battle rifles? They hit harder and are longer ranged than combi rifles but aren't as accurate up close. Blitzens are 2 use disposable EMP launchers for tackling enemy TAGs and units with advanced gear. The chain-colt shoots a small template kind of like the 40k flamer. The other gecko profile has two combi rifles (so he gets one more dice when he shoots them) and a panzerfaust is just the armor piercing version of the blitzen. I'll jump to Senor Massacre so I can do the Algs at once... The grenades are just another type of weapon, smoke grenades provide cover, he has two different close combat weapons as well. The Alguaciles are all little snowflakes rather than just being stock boring combi rifle guys. The paramedic can attempt to fix injured organic friendlies with the medkit. The forward observes have a repeater that they can deploy kind of like a mine, it creates a zone around it that the hacker can attack even if he's not in sight of it (I believe, it's been awhile) and can spot for other units/do tournament objectives as they're specialists. The hacker can hack stuff! The missile launcher guy shoots missiles bwahaha. See, easy stuff Probably for the best that there's nothing on the dent and ding table right? Save that cash I'll get around to PMing, not in a rush

I'm sure your right with how simple the lists are to understand. It's just my dyslexia and my insanity teaming up with the names that aren't completely English to rattle me.
Nice start on the remotes as well.

Post by: Barzam
Ah, you had me worried that in my rush to push through the order before MM's servers crashed, I'd missed something awesome.
Are you sure you wouldn't want to have an engineer in those lists? I'd think you'd want an engineer to keep the Geckos repaired rather than a medic.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Medic is only there because it's a 2 point upgrade off the basic Alguacile. There aren't many good engineers that fit in the list as I've been structuring it. I don't like clockmakers aesthetically and they're kind of boring as a unit too. * At least one of the (noun)-cats units probably has a serviceable engineer and so I may consider taking one over Senor Massacre if I find a good profile that fits and still lets me balance things. My feeling is that, while geckos *are* technically TAGS and that makes them 'sort of' tough, if my opponent is determined to remove one it's going to die all the way in that same round. I think that kind of thing happens to big TAGs all the time, and these are closer in stats to heavy infantry. It *is* a valid point and one that I will consider when I'm looking to pick up an extra nomad mini. Just dug out the rest of my Icestorm box, may as well get the Healer, Grenzer, and CSU cleaned and on bases for painting too.. just in case the whim hits me. Was just gonna take the Algs but then I realized i needed the Brigada too, and the Spektr may as well be out for that incoming arm swap sooo.. just grab the lot, it's easier! Got some more drone work done too, Buttercup is getting pretty close... just needs some highlighting passes on the grey and the lights and other minor details finished, then I can dip. Blossom still needs grey everywhere but I'm gonna do them leap frog instead of batch this time. * Ahh yes, the Tomcat Engineer with Zondcat is only a couple of points cheaper than Massacre and has no SWC. So *if* I ever get to play and realize I'm making a mistake in not trusting my Geckos to be sturdy... that's pretty much a perfect fit. The only bad thing is it's another 4 model box, just like how adding the starter set to get a combi wildcat is a 6 model box... Probably still happen eventually.

Medics are overrated. If you suck enough to get shot you deserve to bleed out. That will teach the next person to be a better soldier and motivate them to fight harder.

Post by: Barzam
Tomcats are supposed to be really good units. You'll probably want one. I don't think you need to take the Zondcat though. I bet you could still find the individual Tomcat blisters. You could also get the Wildcat blisters and just proxy them if you don't want to do any converting.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Yeah I don't see how a cheap airborne deployment unit with a flame thrower and other skills like medic/engineer could possibly be bad The trick is that taking 3 of them in drop mode means you're missing 3 orders while you wait to spring the trap/rescue. Single blisters you say? I will have to google/ebay briefly just in case.
68139
Post by: Barzam
Yep, just did a quick check and the Tomcat blisters are actually more plentiful on Ebay than the boxed set. That includes the blister with the Zondcat. So, unless you really want all of the sculpts, you don't need to get the box.
I'd say the AD thing is probably their biggest potential issue. But, once they're actually on the field, there isn't an issue with limited orders. You probably won't even need them tgat first turn anyway.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
No not as much, just as long as the missing order doesn't make you come up short.
I think on eBay the zondcat+tomcat blister is 20 bucks? 10 more for two more toms... May as well spring for the box set. Not like its an urgent purchase or I hate the models... I'll get there eventually.

It's the invoice or packing slip or whatever you call the order summary they put in the box for you. Holy crap these are big. If the other tags are as much bigger than geckos as I was thinking... They're huge. I need a measure that starts the numbers at the bottom... But to the head is 55-60mm. Realize, that to the top of head most 28mm scale figs are closer to 33-35mm tall. But still. I cannot wait to start. I wanna look into some creative posing and snowflakeification. PS the pose is rushed and bad because it's just tacked together, and there are some decorative bits like the chain colt and the pilot's arms that aren't attached as they don't really add to the sense of scale.

He is a big boy. Solid metal? Looks like the connection points are solid, but I’d pin that guy hard.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
You'd pin him hard huh Nev? Phrasing! Fairly solid metal. Pinning... may happen. I'm gonna probably put pins into the joins to paint the arms separately at least so some of the work will already be done. I've got to finish painting the Remotes but it's not like I play games and need to have stuff done by any particular time or anything.. so I will probably start on these. I don't necessarily want to do them all 4 at once, or paint all 4 at once or anything... but I probably need to clean all the bits and get them prepped so I can think about posing. I've had some wild ideas and seen at least one posing/converting project but now that I've got them in my hands I'm kind of in love with them the way they are... The Twin combi rifle geckos can be varied a little just by switching the arm up/down poses. Stock pose has his right arm resting while aiming with his left, it would change the dynamic quite a bit to flip them both 90 degrees to have the right arm hip-firing while the left arm is swung down... The Mk 12 will be trickier to vary, it's a solid pose but there isn't much you can readily do with it. The rifle arm and left aiming arm of the 2-gun gun fit on the same body but that would leave a guy with like.. no hand/gun for his second arm so meh. I'll do some tinkering. I think the Mk 12 profile is the stronger of the two but I will love all 4 of my Geckos I'm sure. Automatically Appended Next Post: Yeah I dunno.. I've seen a couple of conversions and I know it will be hard.. but I would really like to do something to make each Gecko unique.
I had this idea floating around in my head about having one nicknamed 'Marauder' or 'Berserker' that had a TAG sized axe. Not powered, not explosive, just a big piece of shaped metal/composite that he could use to hack down doors/security panels and anyone who got too close. He'd have some jeweler's chain wrapped around at least one arm kind of like one might do with a length of chain for a nasty bar fight
I'm also contemplating using the chain colts they give you (the short stocky things with the large banna clips coming out both sides) potentially as the twin combis as the twin combis they give you are mahooosive and having the same profile with those as the regular infantry guy seems silly... the chubbier smaller thing almost makes more sense to have combi rifle stats.
Would still need to make the other three snowflakes though, even if Marauder does come to exist.

Great questions Barzam! I live like 2 hours away from MM, so I tend to get packages from them like 3 seconds after I order them I think I also ordered it around 4pm on the first day of the sale so probably inb4 the overload of everyone checking after work/school. I would love to see a comparison shot with your other TAGS. I'm really curious as to how much bigger the Iguana is, and if I ever develop my QK, they will want one. You had a Sphynx too didn't you? He always seemed a bit high for his apparent size but if he's chunky like these guys it's probably ok. I think I'll use the pilot arms. They go there, and I'm not trying to use these as unmanned robots or anything. I guess it seems more dynamic and infinity-proper to imagine their arms flailing about doing what the robot does instead of them being crammed into a tiny cockpit with a joystick and dials/buttons/etc. I'm pretty obsessed with the white/grey/blue I've been doing for my other Nomads. I have a feeling that I'll somewhat closely match the studio scheme (but not quality level!) while subbing white for the red, my own shade of grey (instead of their fantastically done pseudo black) and then the muscle cables will be the same gun metal with a blue glaze over them that the sin eater has on his own arm. Cover is important. You get something like +3 armor and enemies get some kind of penalty to shoot at you. It's -3 so effectively 15% miss chance bonus (when considering you roll d20s to hit). To explain armor, most infantry fall somewhere between 0-3, light infantry usually have 1, medium have 1-3(and 3 isn't that common, I don't believe) and heavy infantry I believe can have up to 5 (maybe 6 in one or two cases, maybe). Tags can have anywhere from 5 like the Geckos to maybe 9. You get to add your armor to your d20 roll to avoid damage (trying to roll higher than the damage value) so, again, +3 armor is like another 15% chance to save incoming damage. My geckos are decently armored (though light for TAGs) and being in cover still increases their chances by more than half, before you even consider the miss chance. You just have to have 1/3 of the model out of LoS though, so it's not *too* hard to get a cover bonus. I need special/snowflake Ideas for all four of them if I'm gonna do it. I mean, I really like the aiming down the sights Mk12 pose, I don't have to change much there... but I only really need one. Of course it's the stronger profile and it's the harder pose to change so I'm not sure quite what I may do just yet. The twin-combi rifle Geckos are my least favored pose and the less useful of the two profiles (a little better up close, but the MK 12 is a harder hitting, longer ranged gun which gives them leverage against regular infantry with combis), so I'll be more likely to convert those a bit more heavily. The Marauder dude would need one hand to have a TAG-sized melee weapon, and or some chains to be cool, maybe even an oversized pauldron on one side like a chaos marauder might have.. but their shoulders are already pretty huge. Not sure what themes/niches for the others. All fighters, don't need a sniper a techy hacker type. One or two can be pretty plain but I can't just have Marauder on his own, s/he needs at least one other snowflake pal. I kind of want to come up with some kind of small-ish missile pod/tubular launchers as well, to represent the panzerfaust/blitzen each has. Basically a two-shot disposable rocket/emp rocket launcher.

Post by: Barzam
If I remember correctly, the Blitzen is stored in the two pods on the TAG's back. The pods flip open and the weapon fires vertically. It's shown in the lineart and in the art book.
I'll be sure to include the Sphinx in my photos. He's a tiny little TAG though. Really, he should just be in a blister he's so small.
I'm thinking I'll do my Geckos up in a scheme to match my troops rather than match them to my other mercenary TAGs. I think adding graffiti or personal markings like nose art or shark jaws would allow you to have the snowflake look while retaining a uniform appearance as well. If there's enough room, I'm going to try putting a shark mouth on one of mine.

Ahh if they're in the pack then I'm good on those I just wish the guns were scales closer to the regular infantry if they're gonna have the same stats. Like if you left the pilot arms off and dropped them 40% then their guns would match the infantry Nd they could be robots...
Oh well they still look awesome.
I will probably paint some graffiti too, but one has to have jeweler chain. Automatically Appended Next Post: Geckos are corregidor Anyway, they don't slum in QK like algs, brigada, And iguanas. Might be that inferior tags are not in demand, but more for corregidor that way. Automatically Appended Next Post: Hmm my tentative conversion path for these four is as follows:
More or less stock pose with the Mk 12, it's solid and I like it.
More or less stock pose with the twin combis.
Next two will swap parts with eachother. Remove the left hand from the second Mk12, attach/fix/repair/convert the carry arm to have that or another hand. Possibly a nasty claw I dunno. Fiddle with the mount and some greenstuff/filing till it's in a slightly more aggressive aiming pose for the mounted chain colt. Tilt the right arm combi ~90 degrees down to be pointing straight out, alter the head, have both weapons in a similar aim.
Take his second combi rifle arm and give it to the fourth guy. So now he has the shouldered Mk12 but isn't supporting it by the grip, just clenching with the one arm. The left arm will have it's combi removed (and possibly stowed on the pack of the third guy) and I'll fix the hand however it needs to be done. He'll now be aiming the chain colt at the same target as his Mk12.
Pretty basic stuff, but I figure with some adjustments to how the legs meet and maybe some tilts to vary the direction their heads are aiming... maybe just enough to make them all unique. That and some cool graffiti.
Automatically Appended Next Post: So yeah, I guess that means I can go ahead and start cleaning/assembling a couple of them as they'll be getting mostly stock poses. Cool.
Need to look at the others too, make sure I'm not missing anything, and especially the one Alguacile I'm gonna convert.

Whoa, that's one big chunk(s) o' metal. Are magnets a possibility for the weapons, or are all of the parts just too heavy?
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Magnets aren't necessary unless I buy another box just for the weapons. You get one set of Mk12 (bigger rifle) arms and two combi rifle arms per box. So I'll have two of each between my boxen but that's still just one set per.
I think the bigger size disk magnets I have (forget if they're 4 or 5 or 6 mm) would hold the arms but as it stands there isn't much point. While they may allow for changeable poses on the combi guys, the arm joins on these dudes are sculpted to fit one way, no flats or ball and socket goodness. I'll probably have to introduce greenstuff anywhere I rotate an arm to alter a pose.
They only have those two profiles in game too, so unlike some units, there aren't any unmodeled profiles one might convert to represent.

Would their be a chance of a Predatir style shoulder cannon?
Maybe the Axe wielded idea you mentioned earlier with his big chunk of metal and an independent gun swivelling on his shoulder?
70053
Post by: GrimDork
It's almost boring, but there are just the four so it shouldn't be too dull.
I'm gonna try to figure something out for the legs though, all the same pose which will probably be boring in 4 dudes, especially when they pose together.
Things *are* chunky though. For what amounts to 13.50 per, they're massive, was really glad to get the boxen at just s bit over half off. Even if they're just a bit tougher than most heavy infantry... I think having four of these chunkers on the board will pose a psychological fear factor on an opponent until he's downed at least one of two. Automatically Appended Next Post: @ archer shoulder cannon could look cool but when the metal gets this thick it gets pretty hard to clip or saw successfully. I may give up on the axe and just end up giving one or two of them big TAG knives for gutting infantry. Will consider it again before I finish all four though.

I forgot they were the same bodies but I guess they didn't expect people to field many of them together. There's always cutting and repositioning the legs slightly to stand them on rocks
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Ehh, they wouldn't make them 2 to a box and have AVA 4 in corregidor if they didn't expect people to field 4
I might look into repositioning some of the legs, but I'm not entirely sure it would bother me that much if I don't.
Painting remotes today.
After seeing Para's TIE fighter repaint though... I kind of want to do my X-wing. Not in official colors though, something more in a darker grey with shark teeth at the front Kind of tempted to get more of those ship kits that are ~1/48 and sort of work at 28mm scale. Maybe make a bit of a space port. Really hankering to do some scenery, not sure about any board stuff yet.. or when/if I'll get back to my netherstorm-inspired boards... but at the very least I wanna do some more scratchbuilds and battlezones buildings.
For now though, painting remotes.
Oh, my litko bases came in. There are a lot. Not entirely sure it warrants a picture though.

Just so you know, the Iguana is about 2 inches taller, but much more slender compared to the Gecko.
Also: (insert evil laugh here) seeing what you got.
Needs more Intruder though.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
So the iguana is 4+ inches tall? Dag. Now I need one of those too. Are you evil laughing at the list composition or the fact that I finally gave in and got some Corregidor? The later was pretty much inevitable, though I fought it for a time.. I like prowlers better than Intruders, but you are right, the Corregidor side of things *could* use some sneaky. I'll just have to add one to the pile of things the faction 'needs' still, which seems to include a starter, the tomcat box, and probably half a dozen other things I hadn't even considered =/ At this rate, I'm gonna have a force of Nomads numerically sufficient to play 40k, not that I'd use them to that end... just amusing that I'll have that many when all you *need* is 10.

Yeah, getting same number of models at infinity prices . At least the rules don't suck.
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I haven't gotten to figure it out first hand... but they seem pretty solid.
Maybe if the Maelstrom's Edge rules come out, are affordable at retail, and don't suck... they'd be a good scale-up ruleset to use with Infinity. For people like me with too many models, and more than one link team per faction, use the link teams as squads of troopers in the 15-30 model skirmish game. We'll see though. I guess Warpath: Firefight is also a possibility. Not that I get to play anyway
Trying to finish these remotes but I'm distracting myself by collating an Infinity Shame Drawer

There you go. Such shame, many regrets, no wow.
Except I'm stoked to have so many cool models to work on

The fact that your drawer of shame is so organized proves that you have no "pile" of shame

That draw is organized!

Post by: GrimDork
I never said i had a pile of infinity shame. I said that about space marine stuff. I showed it off. Actually... I think I had that pretty organized too. Whoops. I just hate broken bits! I just made the drawer, I'm sure it'll get messier in time... though I do hope to clear it out pretty steadily moving forward. I don't care as much if I get my 365/year done but I'd like to make some progress on that drawer and get some other misc projects worked out. Remotes are getting done today dad gum it. Pretty close.

They're good stuff. I just hope you don't end up talking me into Batman with all of your showing off (and others too...), because I really don't need another drawer
Remotes just got dipped.
Now I have to decide if I want to try to bash out some scenery and another actor or two so as to make my 2 remotes into a diorama for round 6 of the painting comp... or if I want to start working on the builds for painting comp round 7...
Also, there are Geckos...
Gecko Gecko.

Yeah you do!

Gecko gecko, round 7 gecko... By which I mean I might just be disappointed if the entry isn't the Gecko squad facing off against, say, a couple dozen Plague Zombies (or Combined Army mutant-somethings that look like Plague Zombies)!
70053
Post by: GrimDork
I want to round 7 Gecko, I do... but it would take a *lot* of odds for one of those to look like the underdog, you know what I mean? Especially if I get more than one done!
I was thinking I could do a Corregidor boarding party that ran afoul of as many plague zombies as I can paint in the time frame. Well either a boarding party in cramped space ship corridors (though it would be almost silly to make more when I have that battlesystems stuff) or a patrol running into the zombies in a dilapidated city district.
I just dunno if a Gecko or two, and or some Alguaciles, would really look like they were outnumbered and going to get eaten. I mean the Gecko is double the height of the zombies and made of metal... how is he gonna be scared
If you don't think it's a breach of theme I may still consider it.
I've got deadzone rebs too and other even less fighty humans like the ones from Mars Attacks that could all be accosted by the zombies...
I would like to keep painting Nomads though

Post by: Barzam
Now see Grim, if you had some Tomcats, you'd have a good reason for sending in Corregidor. Tomcats are Search and Rescue. Do a rescue scenario with Tomcats and their armed escort evacuating civvies from a Shasvastii zombie plague outbreak.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice
These were the ingredients chosen
To create the perfect little killing machines
Blossom and Buttercup, then Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup in the final photo.
I had some other theme ideas for my Nomads but so far, this is the only one to survive concept to realization. Obviously the characters in the kids show had slightly brighter colors but my painting/dipping style just doesn't go that bright. I think I'm up to 13/17(counting the Koalas) Nomads now.
I've got some more photos to share but the kids have been keeping me busy today. Be back with those later if possible.

That is probably my favorite new green: Minitaire Pestilence Flesh. It looks good on the Shasvastii, it looks good on the remote. Also note that it's Pestilence flesh + tudor stain. Darkens it up a little. New photos of existing minis: Whole crew to date. I've got a handful more Bakunin and now a bunch of Corregidor to do as well. Think this is one of the better/more flattering shots of my Moderators. Bunny needs to get her weapon checked out though.. The Observance side of things, Moira doesn't blend as well as the others but they still play nice. And everything else, including Spooky, the Powerpuffs, the Moran, and several Koalas. Probably start work on the Corregidor Breach Team soon. And some Deadzone zombies. And some kind of terrain for them.

Thanks Para, while it's mostly a side effect of the dip and me being too lazy to go back in and smooth things out after the fact, I like how it looks too Glad to have the tanky spider robots done as well!
That's a nice way to say I've got modeling ADD, isn't it Archer?
I do have an odd assortment so don't expect it to start making sense any time soon

Oh man those bots look good.
I really love the infinity aestetic, have managed to resist so far though. That team looks brilliant. And I like the accidental white too, nice when that happens.

Thanks I like the white too, when I dipped that first moderator I think my eyes lit up like it was christmas!
Hmm struggling to come up with something for the LoER comp, guys. I promised tentacles, and the theme is trap door. I want it to be usable in my scifi terrain though. Dungeon stuff is on hold until I can figure out just what I want to do with it. I'm thinking of doing some kind of ground-access shaft to another floor inside a large complex, be it a Nomad ship or just an underground portion of the city. Trying to sort out the implementation though.

Post by: Camkierhi
Well, thinking of Prometheus, giant tentacle thing behind a door, could be a Sci-Fi type setting and you could combine it with the other thing you where doing for some painting challenge, and have a big ass robot being dragged, or running away from said large squiddy beasty!!! 3 jobs in one that way!
70053
Post by: GrimDork
Hmm, it's a thought
I think I have my starting materials figured out now, at least for the structure that houses the trapdoor.
30672
Post by: Theophony
Could you do something with the seed warriors from infinity? Do tentacles fit with their background. Could also do it as a pacifying scenario, where your nomads are clearing a hostile environment. The tentacles could be an escaping alien pulling the trapdoor shut over itself.
I've drawn a blank for my own creation and I am way too into my zombies right now to sidetrack myself this time around, so I'm sitting out now.

You are a genius! That's got it.
Still gonna do zombies for painting round 7 but shasvastii seed pods hidden in that building is perfect.

Decided to do the harder gecko conversions first. First guy is close and second guy is concepted below. He will need some kind of claw. I figure this guy is all action and kind of breach first maintenance when I'm dead kind of person, so his mech has a missing hand casually replaced with something crude and he's bolted/strapped his second gun to the first and rigged the firing mechanisms together.
First guy is basic rifle pose but he's decided he needs to chain colt something up close at the same time.
3 and 4 may be pretty standard stock poses. I know I don't want to change the mk12 firing pose. Twin combis may or may not get modded, we'll see.
Probably will focus on this first guy with the mk12 as I want to use him in wave 7 of the dakka paint challenge. He will need very minor gap fills and some texture fixes on his left arm. Still have to remove the hand from his mk12 too.
Will start on zombies once this guy is assembled, well part assembled gonna leave off the right arm and pack. If I get enough zombies done I'll look into some backup for him.
