I recently got the Wargames Factory Great Coated shock troops, and they are for my 40k army to expand my IG. I have assembled all of them, and am now working on the paint work, sorry for not having batteries in the camera for the construction phase.
Paint work has begun, Catachan Green for the hard armor, and grays of several colors are for their great coats. I started with a base of fortress gray. Here is the Command Squad for one of the head types being used as they have three different types. I used all three to make platoons from three different planetary sources.
My beginning pics
The Commander
[/img] [/img]
The vox-man"Sparx"
[/img] [/img] [/img]
The Medic, "Patch'em up"
[/img] [/img]
The Weaponeers with Grenade Launchers
[/img]
The "bodyguards" one with the Auto-rifle, the other with a lasgun.
[/
The entire command squad
[/img] [/img]
More to come later as they are painted, the breather masks will also be painted, I am thinking of painting "Patch 'em up's" helmet white and with red crosses.
1. macro setting on your camera. usually looks like a flower.
2. make a stack of books, and put a plain sheet of white paper against it, cover your desk with it too. Then put your models within that white space. makes for an easy photo area.
3. hold your camera steady at around a foot to 6 inches away from your figures. DO NOT ZOOM. zooming makes your camera's autofocus more grainy, ruining any pictures that you take when you move your hand slightly. If you do not zoom, those same pictures could be usable.

Ah thanks, I was out at my local game shop, I had boxes I could have propped the paper sheet, or the plain plastic sheet against, and I must have slipped the macro at some point. I will have better pics to replace these.
Still with just two colors painted, the entire team:

Patch 'em up

The weapon experts, Krak and Frag

The bodyguards;

I used the suggested white background, and no flash to avoid glare, the initial pics seem dark, but I will post the minis with more paint and colors as well
Thanks, I started to look at the distance more with the flower image clicked on my controls, still got a little too close on some of these, so sorry for the blur from getting too close.
I avoided zooming as that just looked awful anyway.
what other paints will these fellas be getting? will you aply your camo as well on these?
also what will you do to the bases? the given small bases with the models i hope will not be seen when they´re done, or ?
i love those figs, to bad that i will go for a brit look so these fellas are out of the question...
I will coat the bases in grass most likely, all of it so that at worst they will be standing on little rises of grass under their feet, or I will sand them, and paint them gray. Ah, the camo for the troops os different, but the Chatachan green and shadow gray will be there. Upload complete, I will add those pics next.
may i recommend something? use airdry clay. with that you can almost achieve anything in basing. the stuff is amazing. i use it still wet and have the base coated with pva glue before. then the clay gets aplyed to base. by doing this you wont see anything of the minibase from wargames factory base...
and you can do lots of different designs for the real base with it. like mud and lava or cobblestones, all of the above i´ve done myself...
Khadrovian troops wear a cloth in a block/digital urban/winter scheme of Shadow gray and dark gray over fortress gray, helmets and hard armor are Catachan green with kommando khaki with graveyard earth inside.
The entire squad just staring

Automatically Appended Next Post: Mind you, all of this is done by a guy with glasses, shaky, arthritic hands and battered brushes.
Thanks for the tip vik! I will need a lot of that stuff as i have over a hundred of these guys to finish!
well i wont do any camo on my fellas at all, but i think your camo looks good to go. the fine lighter lines on the helmet and armor look especially good. but i have to say one thing, the sani helmet just looks stupid to me. one thing: if i was a sani/medic than i would only have on the backside a red cross. also i would definatly recommend repainting that white helmet. it looks just off. i´d go full camo with a red cross only on the back. and is it still possible to ad laspistols or even boltpistols, heck boltaction pistols even instead of the wargames pistols, they look realy flimsy. i wouldnt feel threatened at all if they would point at me...
but dont get these harsh words in the wrong way the models look grim and artful, so they will be a fine force...200? phew, thats quite a bunch to paint...
Thanks vik. I had in fact seen such white helmets before for medical, but then again, I may shrink the white down to circles around the red cross, and leave it camo green and no "splinter" pattern, he is a medic after all.
I even have some old autopistols lying around, may use them as they are bigger and scarier.
i would so much apreciate the mentioned change, color and weapon wise. i think your army will be quite a breath taker^^
and really arthritic ? or just a pun, thats a very bad thing to happen to someone... i am a bit afraidf it might come to me one day...not being able to use hands without care is something of a nightmare to me...
Well, I have to find the guns for the change, and then, not too many to go around. Shame they went with the "Capt. Scarlet size pistols, they look less lethal, true.
Osteo-arthritis, I can see the twist of the fingers as they don't completely line up as they once did. Worse is in the ankles/knees/hips.
ouch, thats something bad mate. i´ve heard that word before, if i´m not mistaken i know that my´father has it too. but i know he´s done things to push himself into these circumstances...
i hope you have everything to cope with that hardship. atm i have cold and going with that some rheumatic pains... i daren´t imagine that would be a condition to dont go away...
does it help you when you paint? sometimes for some people it is actually relieving pain to use the fingers more and thus getting them warm and flexible once more...if not, all the more praise to you for waht you have achieved under these conditions...
it´s reaching 02:00 in the morning, should take a nap until the wretched clock tosses me again out of bed^^
hmmm pretty much diversified ranks. would be nice to see them all.
got me a bunch of catachans, cadians and some fantasy imperial musketeers also some warzone minis as well. i guess my force will be a pretty patchwork army...i hope i can blend them all in into the victorian theme...want to go for a redcoat look. will be dificult.
I love the models. Look like a great way to put together some Steel Legion without breaking the bank. I like your paint job too, its nice and clean. Where im getting confused though is why you chose to do two competely different typs of camoflauge on the characters? I thought they looked great with th egrey/green look
The entire idea of the mixed camo is competing makers of the uniforms and armor, mix in a very uncaring bureaucracy that rubber stamps what the best bids are and you get a mix like that. I may still go with making the coats more one colored and keep the armor and helms camoed like that
With three different groups and their sub-groups, I may try something different for their vets.
Meanwhile, I did work on a lense color that was different

IIRC these are the first IGs i´ve ever seen with SM shoulderpads and i think the look is very suitable for them. the effect is to show the true stormtrooper in them...
they do look battlehardend right enough...there is a catachan explosive carring mini, you could get it and use him for carring the vodka around kind of medic so to say...lol
Thanks, now I have to paint the other 45 of those with that helmet style. I may try something slightly different with the ones with the other two head types I assembled.
i like those models, the colors you use are very cool.
ive always hatted the guns thou, of those models in particular, do you know if IG guns or arms can be used instead, ive always wondered this in case i ever got these models!
I suppose they could, but a lot of cutting is needed, the main rifles are bullpup ammo fed, and the thing is, I like the Autoguns as they have that nice BFG feel, especially with the underslung shotguns.IG arms and even head could be used based on the way these guys are molded.
Just have to see what it is you like, and then make those changes.
Okay, decided to give a size comparison between GW and WF minis for a feel of their size, the two closest poses i found were between the Colonel and Sgt. Vassily. Now, keeping in mind that the Catachan legs I used for Vassily are in a odd backwards stance and that the Colonel was left on his blob of stand, about 1-2mm high, he looks taller, but the scale is 28mm, making them basically the same size as far as actual wargaming is concerned. So now, for your pleasure, Vassily and the Colonel
[/img]
More level
[/img]
And side by side and closer in
[/img]
Automatically Appended Next Post: Vassily's Hellpistol is more impressive than that needly pistol of the colonel, I need to find a better pistol, after all, a Colonel needs an impressive gun. I may also have a decent sword for him as well to have on him, marking his status as an officer and a gentleman.
vent wrote:Awesome camo pattern. Very cool colors.
Thanks, Vassily will get his version once I get back to paint this week and apply more time to that wild bunch! Almost done with the Colonel and his command unit. Once I get done with them, I will work on the Platoon and the great coat veterans from their planet. All part of the Konfederacy of course Komrade!
thanks for the scale pics... youre dudes will be a great addition for the imperial forces against xenos and heretics...
will you give the colonel a sword sheated or replace the pointing hand? would be a shame if you destroy that pose...so i would opt for a sheated sword...
FoxPhoenix135 wrote:I'll be doing my own shock trooper IG army soon, it will be interesting to compare.
Sounds good! It is always better to see different patterns as I see so many folks do nice paint schemes, but mostly sticking to what the companies have done as if if were set in stone, I have always believed that we should be more original and come out with whether our own schemes, or maybe a scheme we liked from someone else that we did a similar job to. (In the case of a gray-on-gray scheme I borrowed, I did let the person know I was going to try the pattern/scheme out on my Tau, it was okayed)
So, you have seen my IG patterns.
My SM, the Dragons Errant are Regal blue with Shadow Gray trimmed and blinged in shining/burnished gold.
My Orks are a paler shade of green and wearing tanned but undyed leathers and tin bitz armor/weapons as they were inspired somewhat by the movie "The Fifth Element"
My Tau original scheme is "jungle vine" camo that is three shades of green and confounds those with poor color vision, and their gray/gray urban camo scheme.
I'll be doing a very Soviet-esque theme, so I'm still deciding between an olive drab scheme or a more modern spetnaz camouflage, such as the 2nd pic down on this page:
the plasma pistol looks odd...i think you should shave a bit of the handle off...
will you add a strap to the sword? i think the sword as such look ace, gives him a bit of a vet look as if he was promoted to colonel and given the sword as well...
Well, the handle is from the original pistol, odd as I think it was the bulk of that spindly weapon. Power supply in handle? I can't shave it down much or I will shave his hand down/off.
I can make a strap from putty I think, but I did wish to get it placed on him and I think he is one of those that reaches behind himself to draw it, so, yes, a strap will work.
Nice work! Very nice camo patterns and very nice IG conversions too. The SM arms have worked very well and clearly shows that they are veterans. Keep up the good work

Thanks! I am liking the IG army of mine all the way, and will have to post some of the completed pics back on Bootcamp as well when finished.
Okay, I promised more pics of the troops tonight, and well here they are.
Here we have the command section for the Myrmanskyan Rifles as the contribution to the Khadrovian Konfederacy has all members participation to defend their section of humanity on His name on Earth!

Sgt. Vassily and his "Violators" looking for more enemy tanks to kill.
[/img] [/img] [/img] [/img]
the slight russian feel your camo instills looks at its best with your Sgt. Vassily and his "Violators" , here its most fitting, this doesnt mean i dont like it on the other guys as well, mind you^^
so i guess it is finally time for some basing?
will be nice to see these hooligans done completley...
have you considered using air dry clay for the modeling of the bases? are all models completly fixed on the bases or is their still time to make 3D bases for them?
and remeber i did it the wrong way and it still looked good...i should have done basecoat red and then yello drybrush instead i did yello basecoat and then reddrybrush and then gradually yellowing it up...took quite some time...
Yeah, I have some other great coats that will get the cracked and glowing effect as they come form a radioactive volcano world that requires their protective gear as normal.
if you like i can post a pic of a mini i bought on the fleamarket. i did the paintjob rather simple to test an idea. i basecoated it black and as it is a stonetroll kind of he got only sunburst yellow in its cracks...it turned kind of like a neonyellow to green glow effect which would make a good looking baseeffect too...
Funny thing about the ABC warriors in mind, the radioactive volcano world Great coats are them, they have armored covered face masks with even armored eye pieces that look like tank vision slits. Those look odd but will be mounted on the magma like rocks you showed me.
Going to head out to the shop today to work on that platoon. I will pick the bunch posed together as that will give an idea of how many there are to work on!
whoa thats a huge amount of paintwork done, i congratultae you for your ongoing abition...how long did you work for that? i shudder to think i am way in front of such a vast unpainted army, but in fact i am^^ as i have no mini paited yet for my imperials...that will take some time...
Hi Vik, that was several hours work at the local shop, started about say 5pm, got to quitting time about 10pm due to also making a missile oriented sentinel I got myself for the Holidays.
I have it listed as an A.S.V.-30a5 missile striker, has the multiple missile launcher and a HK along with it.
The troopers I had to slow down on as I forgot to take the close in reading glasses for detail work, and it was odd to paint at arms' length as was.
TNS, Thanks, good to hear that others also are liking these minis for conversion work. The company doing this are also working on heavy weapons teams as well! ^^
I tend to be using it at a lot of different sites. I was looking for something years ago to go with my Chinese Zodiac sign, and found it out there, no idea who the artist is. But the look on the face matches my own at many times!
Anyway, I have so many more IG to paint! I may well not be finished until Summer of 2011 if I concentrate on them.
I think That I shrunk it so it could fit the avatar thing.
LOL! I have 35man platoon of the one shown with 10vets.
35men of the new style, and vets
25man platoon of the just gasmask heads.
about 50 Vostroyans
more converted and not so converted Cadians, more than 50.
several vets sqauds of cadia/catachan mixed.
and about 20-30 Valhallans all told to paint. Pluss several sqauds of Kasrkin and of course command sqauds to lead them all.
I will be down painting Wednesday at the shop, and will have the platoon worked on and I will drag the camera along with to snap more pics of them as I get closer to finishing these bad boys!
they look good, just the black now thats absent, right?
one thing though, i am not that sold on the green weapons... or will you tone done the happy look of green on them?
vik
and one question again: do you carry all of your army with you when going to the shop er where exactly are you painting?
i would stick with black and metal look as it looks more professional, soldiers in such great groups would not have camo weapons as i think thats more something for scouts and snipers or comandos...but then again my G3 during my time had a green butstock so thats that for you^^
completly black? hmmm my had a green handle and butstock and the barrel handprotecter thing in green, the weapon was about from the 1965...and i did service in 1995...very modern army that time...........not.
i now of an experimental weapon called G11 and then there was a brief time called G41...the current is G36 in all its variants...so i guess if there was a G1 i dont know of then that had to be more like WWII related...the names are like the M16 or M1 showing their age...did a quick search...
did you hold that one here?
i like the FN Fal quite a lot it packs a decent punch and makes very ugly holes^^...
shame with all Nato realted 7,52 amo guns/rigles is their amo capacity...20 round is not something that will make you last in the battlefield for more than 30 secs...the average lifeexpectancy acording to my sarge ...
Though I funnily enough haven't joined the army, my fave weapon (though probably not accurate) is either the SCAR-L trispear or the ACR. I'm a pretty good shot apparently- I went air rifling for the first time and outshot the instructor. I got a score of 24, out of a possible 30 in 5 shots.
Vik Ah the original G-1 was wood stocked.
I have seen the G-11 caseless ammo concept.
Not as familiar with the others, and the pic has failed Vik.
Sadly, I needed the money to fix my car so I could get to work and the rifle was sold back to the gun-store. :(
Shrike Nice shooting scores! I was official a sharpshooter, but I got cheated just shy of sniper school scores, and would have become a changed MOS if that had happened...LOL near sighted sniper, made up for with the scopes! I love sniping in Fallout:New Vegas though, and have achieved kill shots even as the rifle is bouncing around!
Fluff for the Murmanskyan Rifles is coming up soon!
i was a pretty decent shooter in my time too, once we had a bit of spare amo in at the shooting range and we made a little game, five fallover targets /human sized at about 100-200 i guess and i had in the end to battle my first lieutenant ...well i was way faster and i got better shots than him...me a sorry privat^^ being... so i was revarded a full mag of 20 bullets to shoot at my own will on the targets... mind you in the german army they are so uncle scrooge with amo that in a sudden defensive situation most soldiers would instantly fill out a form instead of lock and loading... so what i am saying is 20 bullets is like a big win in a lottery in this army...^^
LOL! and they would usually have us use the ammo with the approaching due date for them going "stale", so we got blow off plenty of rounds. I heard German Army soldiers firing their Uzi's, and it sounded like a fart-noise. But anyway, I got my records back, and discovered the M-16 I was qualified on was referred to as........Auto-rifle!
And I wish they left the ability to make penal legions as a whole platoon, instead they now are a single squad choice. That means a weird "elite" army if all six troop slots were penal troops.
doubtful if that was in reality doable...so many cons in one army and only the occaisonal sarge and commissar to keep them in place...every officer knows that some dire accidents might happen in the field...and with too much cons around that would lead to such things for sure...
New Pics! some of these will be in my tank thread as well due to obvious reasons! I still have more gray stuff to do on their bases to even them out, and then I can do the urbanized look of sidewalk lines in them. Meantime, Enjoy!

Thanks guys. Sad story regarding the Great Coats, the original guys got ousted due to a backstabber going to their new majority owners in China and badmouthing them, now all those who were loyal followers of Wargames Factory are upset and unhappy. We all decided to spread an embargo/boycott unless they re-instate the original management especially the one guy whose dream it was to make the company in the first place. I am Glad I got the 100+ of the ones i did before all the poop hit the fan on that one!

Commander Cain wrote:Great stuff, I like to see those trench coat models with more interesting poses. Keep it up!
Where did you find that super-heavy? I must have one!
One of the things is that the troopers have few pose options.
As for the Tank, I ordered it through Yesasia.com, but it can also be found at Hobbylinkjapan.com
It is the T-61A5 from Gunadam 0079: Gravity Front second of three episodes.
I'm financially incompetent. Instead of spending the money on the miniatures I really want, I instead nickel and dime myself to the point that I've spent more money then I intended.
In this case of money wasting I wanted some Imperial Guard Cadian Kasrki for a Radical Daemonhunters army. As you know these are very rare and very expensive, $41 + S&H for 10 miniatures is pretty steep. So its was by pure crappy coincidence that on Sat Jan 15, 2011 that I discovered the Wargames Factory Great Coats miniatures. These guys look awesome!
I did the usual search to find the best deal which was on eBay: $19.95 w/ cheap shipping (Buy It Now). Wow 18 minis for $20!! The seller had 6 boxes so I figured I put them on my list until I was sure.
2 days later on Monday Jan 17, 2011 I decided that I was going to buy 2 boxes so first thing in the morning I head over to eBay but to my dismay all 6 boxes had been sold!!!
WTF!!!
30 minutes later after scouring the internet I discover the story about the demise of the company.
well as your certainly not a teen anymore you might know this one here...:
about 3:30 i think...
classy as hell...
also it might actually be a dr. pepper, whos callen for moar^^

for my karskin needs i bought a truckload of SM scouts that i think will fir the bill real nicely, also they came off really cheap...
but then again the dust tactics minis look really good...
I have the Dust Tactics guys, and they only come 5 per squad, and the IG codex wants them as 10 for normal squads, but since Kasrkin/stormtroopers are as small as 5 man squads, they would fit the bill, especially with all that armor on them.
yep^^liked the whole show, in germany there was a show in its backwater but it didn´t reach the funny heights of saturday night live back then...all the famous comedy stars had there their great premiers...
Would have helped had I remembered the camera! Oh well, hopefully, the troops will be remembered for pics tomorrow, along with my 1500pt tourney force.
question a tad off topic would you use catachans? i have looked up and i have about a ton of them and need to know how to use them and make them fit in my army... any ideas?
Oh I have Catachans, and they come from the world of Caskrainia, the most temperate and warmest world in the Konfederacy. They are my forest fighting troops.
Great coats yes, but Praetroians? but look, catachans in undershirts and vests, practically naked from the waist up, and in fatigues, no worries about that mud there then, let's let them go deal with that as we raid that mansion over there, they must have some decent tea!
lol, yeah dirty work for catachans and for us some tea and some sweet biscuits...or if you are the daring one some cucumbersandwhitches...(pun intended...)
I got my Dust Tactics Recon Grenadiers a few days ago and I was surprised at the actual size of the mini. They are slightly taller than a Space Marine but they are skinner and normal human looking. Any way here's a pic of a SM, Recon Grenadier & a Demon Hunter (Conforntation):
BWT - these are WIP's so keep yer darn criticism to yer self
Yeah the Dust minis are not cheap, they are cheaper than Karskins but the Great Coats are a steal if you can find them.
I paid $15 for 1 Box of Dust Tactics - Recon Grenadiers (DTRG) (http://miniaturemarket.com/inc/sdetail/1154202) - it would have been $25 for 2 boxes but I wanted to see how they looked before I bought a bunch of them. I will say that the DTGR's look frickin' awesome- they are very detailed. Oh and they are pre-painted but only with a gray base-coat which saves you the time of having to prime them.
After getting the DTRG's I decided to instead buy 2 boxes of AT-43 UNA Steel Troopers for $20 (total of 12 minis) - they haven't arrived yet but when they do I'll take another comparison photo. I went for the UNA troops because they look a little more heroic and futuristic then the DTRG's.
Yeah the bases are slightly taller, helping the height thing.
I also considered getting AT-43 Red Blok troopers for my theme of a Russian/Soviet style confederation.
That would be a very lopsided campaign methinks. Also, need for traveling is not cheap. Although, I was thinking how cool it would be to see that Zeppelin in combat action!
ouch flamers against a zeppelin...could go both ways as the blimp is of course not painted... if i paint it as cloth then you win, if i do metal mesh then your in trouble...
Viktor von Domm wrote:ouch flamers against a zeppelin...could go both ways as the blimp is of course not painted... if i paint it as cloth then you win, if i do metal mesh then your in trouble...
I figured Vik, that was why the one thing of crazy sacrifice for the Emperor and the Konfederacy exists with my guys, if they are getting pummeled, they will aim the meltas to the deck and blast the armor to get to the gasbags, they are that crazy!
If they were REALLY crazy, they'd attempt to kill enemy soldiers by throwing thier meltaguns at them.
I just got the image of a flamer running out like a water pistol, ending up with a piddly little stream that goes about 5cm...heh heh heh...
PWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH.
Arkeletskyans??
where do you come up with those names? do i read you right that the names speak something?
vik
and russian suicidal squads?? never heard of those...
well then again my grandfather told me of 10000 russian partisan rushing from the woods mostly armed with sticks and stones to attack the german small force...mowed down by heavy machinegunfire... but nevertheless they got the Lt. of my granddad from his halftrack...pew pew pew..i will remeber this story of him forever...
I just come up with wild names all of the time, some have roots in things.
Oh, I have read accounts of squads of Russians with one rifle amongst ten men, all had ammo clips, if the rifle guy dropped, the next guy would pick it up and use it instead of the farm implement. If Russians were gonna loose, they would attempt to do so taking as many enemy as possible with them. Partisans would even put a grenade pressed under a corpse so that when the enemy pulled on it, the grenade pin would release and BOOM!
Arkeletskya, a world where the volcanoes spewed radioactives into the air making it nuclear winter w/o a war, but just as nasty as if one had occurred, hence the heavy protective gear
