Black Fists 1st Company @ 2010/11/30 03:27:57

Post by: shortsonfire79

The Black Fists are a chapter that descends directly from the honored Imperial Fists. Sister chapters with the Black Templars and the Crimson Fists, the Black Fists combine both paint schemes of the chapters. The chapter badge comes directly from the Imperial Fists, with crossing triangles in the background represent both the Black Templars and Crimson Fists intertwined in brotherhood.

Founded in the year M37 from a surplus of tactical units, the Black Fists spent five decades training members to be specialized with devastator weaponry and in the form of rapid assault. Although the newly formed chapter had little to no experience in battle, Chapter Master Andre Cortola was soon to remedy that by bringing the Black Fists to battle with the dark treachery of Chaos.

After several incidents, the brothers who performed at a greater level of weaponry skill and tactics, were soon seen as the chapter’s elite. Chapter Master Andre Cortola soon made a point of forming proper companies after seeing initial performance of the marines. Following the strict Codex Astartes, Cortola soon had ten companies at full strength under his command.
Although the chapter closely followed the Codex Astartes, Cortola had put in an extra squad in his elite First Company. By doing so, he had ten extra marines to bolster the attack of the core force. The First would always move as one, soon to be known throughout the chapter and the home systems as Cortola’s Hammer was swift to bring destruction to the enemies of the Holy Emperor.

The chapter itself is a master of siege tactics. No match for the Imperial Fists themselves, the Black Fists have been known to hold citadels under siege for years, eventually flushing out the enemy from within. The commanders of the Black Fists are well versed in tactical planning, rehearsing every movement before it happens.

The Black Fists embrace the Codex Astartes readily, and receive training of all aspects of combat as written by Roboute Guilleman.

Once recruits are selected, their criminal record is examined, and they undergo a battery of tests: musculature, psychological profile, psychic level, eye reflexes, intelligence, the ability to shoot, pain resistance, and dexterity. If they manage to pass that, they face extreme heat, cold, empty space, and any other condition they may face on any warzone. The severity of testing increases along the way. If the initiate passes, he becomes a cadet and the symbol of the Black Fists is marked on his left shoulder. Then begins the indoctrination, training and the actual surgery that will make them Marines. After the initiation ceremony, the cadet's family is informed that their child has become a Space Marine to ensue a matter of pride in the families.

The 1st company always marches together as one, with the Captain of the Company always being the Chapter Master as well. As with the Crimson Fists, it is considered a bad omen to march to battle with less than a full veteran company.

The Black Fists have always had close ties with the Imperium and the Inquisition. They have contributed many warriors to the kill-teams of the Ordo Xenos, being renowned Ork fighters. Many of these kill-team warriors have made their way back into the chapter, and even into the veteran company.

This post was started on August 12, 2009 on Ammobunker Forums and I am now posting it here. I would like to become a frequent member of DakkaDakka. I've heard so much about it, and drop by every once in a while. But I'd like to share my stuff with the friendlies here.
So with my first chapter, The Royal Redeemers, and the most recent, The Sapphire Saints, both have almost failed miserably. In fact, the Sapphire Saints didn't really fail...yet, but I was having a very hard time coming up with a chapter icon. I was surfing the B&C boards, and saw several AMAZING Imperial Fists armies, like Shaw3029 and Inquisitor Engel's. I decided to make my new chapter, the Black Fists, be a successor of them. Obviously by the name, they're a mix between the Black Templars and the Crimson Fists.

The Chapter as of October 4th, 2010

Chapter Master Andre Cortola. WIP

Squad Prometheus.
The members of Sternguard Veteran squad Prometheus have been hand selected by Sergeant Andromedus. Each member has been in the squad for over a century. They have all had extensive training with every weapon in the Space Marine arsenal, though they are highly specialized in all forms melta weaponry more so than any other. As Prometheus was a being of fire, they use the burning might of melta weaponry to take down their foes.

I really like the small details on the sketch of the banner, very cool. That's a neat idea of chapters to combine IMO.

I like the massive land raider and the thunderbolts. This looks like it'll be quite the army when it's finished. Would like to see pics when you make progress on the land raider.

Yay! Comments already.

A Black Ram: Thanks. I was stuck without inspiration for a long month, then one day in math, I pumped that out in a few minutes.
Mukkin'About: Thanks. I'll be posting up a few squad close ups in the upcoming posts/days. The Chapter Master head is from Maxmini, called Steam Knight heads.
Edit: Thanks Draglide12: That last picture of the Land Raider was actually taken today. I've been working on it a bit recently ( I started it at least a year ago) Thanks.
War for Atalcina pt1 wrote:"Brothers, tomorrow we, the venered first of the Black Fists will arrive at Macragge, the honored homeworld of the Ultramarines Chapter to meet with Chaplain Cassius, where we will form up with the Tyranid Hunters to fight against the returning threat of Hive Fleet Leviathan.

Tonight, we must feast. This is the first time in two decades that our entire first company has been together to fight in such a tremendous battle. As one, we will show the Tyranids that they are have no place in this universe. Some of us will not return to this hall by the end of our great crusade, but fear not, as your lives will not be taken in vain!" First Company-Captain Marcus Othello of the Black Fists said aboard the great hall of The Deliverance, one of the three Battlebarges they commanded.

With a mighty cheer, Captain Othello knew that his brothers were ready for war.
~
"Steady brothers, hold fire until I give the command."

The Whirlwind batteries behind the wall of bastions, similar to that of an ancient race that had once tried to block out an invading force from their territory in ancient Terra, launched several salvos of incendiary missiles into the tsunami of Tyranid organisms racing towards them. The Earthshaker Cannons followed suit, launching barrage after barrage over the high armored wall. Screaming missiles and large shells hurled into the huge moving mass, displacing hundreds of terrible organisms with each explosion.

The entire second company of Ultramarines, under the command of Captain Cato Sicarius was formed up in the uppermost level of the bastion wall that fully circled the hive city of Atalcina. Joining them were elements of the first company led by Captain Agemman, veteran Tyranid Hunters led by Chaplain Cassius, and the Lord Macragge himself and his Honor Guard.

Mixed into the Ultramarine force was the entire first company of the Black Fists Chapter. Dwarfed by the hundreds of Space Marines at the ramparts, platoons of Imperial Guardsmen and the Adrian Planetary Defense Force were proudly looking over the battlefield, ready to die for the Immortal Emperor and their home planet. Behind the battle wall sat companies of Imperial Guard armor and Space Marine vehicles, mixed together, read to destroy the Tyranids if they spilled over the wall. Scores of super heavy tanks sat patiently, while the Macharius Vulcans and Stormlord tanks sat, guns at the ready, their Vulcan Megabolters steaming in the early morning chill.

Another several salvos of incendiaries and Earthshaker shells were launched again, one shell hitting the decrepit hull of a Mars Pattern Stormhammer, crawling with Tyranid Warriors. The thousands of gaunts around the hull shuttered as the synapse in that area was disrupted. As a flying Hive Tyrant took the extinguished brood's place, as the wave of gaunts surged forward once more.

"Aim for the leaderbeasts!" Cassius cried out.

With that, several missiles and lascannon shots descended from the ramparts into the Hive Tyrant. With a tremendous scream, the tyrant took every shot. As the smoke from the blast cleared, the Tyrant uncovered itself from behind its wings and let out a mighty roar, everything around it surged forwards at a tremendous speed.

"No… Even our heaviest weaponry can't even take it down…" muttered an Imperial Guardsman.

"Don't worry soldier, we'll take it down." Said Captain Othello to the small man. He turned his attention to one of his Sternguard squads. "On my mark, fire your lascannons at the beast" with an acknowledgement from Sergeant Polonius, Othello told one of the Whirlwind batteries to aim at the Tyrant. As another barrage went over the wall, Othello watched as the tyrant once again covered itself with its wings. As the force of the blasts threw numerous lesser creatures away, the tyrant stood anchored to the dilapidated Stormhammer hull.

As the fires died down, Othello quickly got back on his vox to talk with the Sergeant Polonius.

"Fire the lascannons now!"

As two beams quickly descended from the wall, the tyrant unfurled its wings. It was about to let out another roar of defiance, but it turned into a screech of pain as both beams penetrated right into what would seem to be its chest, and through the hull of the Stormhammer, into the ammo bay, and causing a chain reaction that disintegrated the tank and the tyrant in itself.

As the gaunts in the general vicinity started to swagger, the Imperials on the ramparts heaved a mighty cheer. One of the guardsmen looked up, taking his empty gaze off the smoldering hole.

"Holy Emperor…" he pointed out towards the horizon.

Several gaseous, spider-like shapes could be seen behind the morning sun.

"Hierophants…" Cassius murmured. "The titans of the beast… I hope Legio Ignatum and Invicta can take those down…and we still have a wall of 'Fex's to go through… Holy Emperor, watch over us."

The guardsman looked at the guy next to him and whispered, "And he's supposed to be our faith…"

"I would kill you now, faithless one, but we need every man we can get against these things." Barked Cassius.

War for Atalcina Pt2 wrote:The fighting was intense, thousands of gaunts clawed at the wall, scrambling up just to get a shot to the face by a soldier of the Imperium.

It was not even midday yet. Every hour or so, Space Marine brothers with flame throwers would lean over the wall to use the flaming promethium to clear the mass of dead gaunts piled at the bottom of the wall.

It had only been two hours since the fighting actually started, and yet the soldiers on the wall were already shouting that they were running out of ammo magazines. The Black Fist and Ultramarine brothers were more careful to save their ammo than their Imperial Guard allies. When the opportunity arose, instead of shooting every single gaunt that made its way up the wall, they would instead smash it in the face with the butt of their Bolter.

As a brother or guardsman fell, another marine would pick up the weapon to be set aside for later use. Captain Othello, Captain Sicarius, and Master Calgar were all calling to Atalcina for ammunition reinforcements. Both chapters had taken a large portion of their ammo supply from their home worlds, but yet their supplies were starting to dwindle.

The hive planet of Andrian was worth saving, because besides having a population of over 17 billion, it was classified as a minor forgeworld. While it didn't create titans or space-venturing ships, it created several of its own variants of heavy vehicles. Several large tanks sat with dual battlecannons, fastened to their hulls. Others sporting several large flamestorm cannons mounted on a rotating turret were anchored to heavy ferrocrete blocks near the wall. Not only did the forgeworld produce heavy armor, they also designed small, light missile buggies. For the confrontation with the Tyranids, they replaced the missile launchers with heavy bolters and heavy flamethrowers. The whine of their motors over the grumble of all the idling tanks could be heard as they skirted around waiting for a target.

Looking towards the city, several black specks which where ammunition and promethium trucks could be seen rushing towards them.

The claxons blared suddenly, stating that another wave of gargoyles were approaching. The soldiers on the wall didn't need the claxons though. A large ominous shuddering black cloud was approaching out in the distance.

The Invicta and Ignatum Reaver Engines fired their gatling and laser blasters into the cloud. With the distance from the mass, they were able to take down hundreds with each shot amounting to thousands before the cloud even reached the wall. Then all hell broke loose.

Several guardsmen were picked up by gargoyles to be swung around and thrown towards the assaulting Tyranid wave.

The vulcan megabolters from the Macharius and Stormlords whirred to life as they sputtered death from their barrels. Each slug punching a hole through the cloud of gargoyles.

After several minutes of the swarms attack, the entire mass shuttered as one. There was a screech among the masses of gaunts and gargoyles. The entire wave turned around and burst into the foliage from which they came.

To a great confusion of the Imperial forcers on the wall, the Tyranids had disappeared as quickly as they had arrived. Confused, brothers and guardsmen alike were murmuring amongst each other, wondering what had just happened. Captain Othello and Master Calgar immediately started shouting out orders to repair weapons and drag the dead away. The brothers with the flamethrowers made sure to clear the outer wall before refueling with the trucks that had arrived from the city. The atmosphere turned from scared chaos into confident tension.

Engineers ventured out along the outer bastion wall to plant trigger-timed melta bombs into the acid soaked soil. They were to be triggered when the large beasts appeared, hopefully timed to correctly to detonate at the best moment.

Master Calgar and Captain Othello received word that a large element of the Imperial Navy's airforce had arrived. Several wings of Thunderbolt fighters and Marauder bombers and destroyers were ready to assist in the battle, each being loaded with

Some recent press mold fists, from the Imperial Fist shoulderpads. (took a long time to cut these out)

Chapter Master André Cortola's Honor Guard for the time being. I want to remake them in plastics so I can get a bit more personality in them. We'll see how I feel after I finish the company.

An unfinished Sternguard squad equipped with two lascannons.

Finished heavy bolter armed Sternguard Squad. I don't have a squad painted picture yet. I'll get one of those when I can.

The Interrogator Chaplain that I painted a long time ago. The gray specks are dust. :p I used a gloss varnish (I'll dullcote one of these days) and the flash/dust make it look like I drybrushed him.

Thanks for the welcome guys. + + =

Flying Poo and Draglide12.

P.S. Hoorah for Winters indeed. I'm glad you caught that, you're the first. I found it fitting to make him the "Scoutmaster." If I ever do Elysians, He'll be there too.

Edit: After reading a couple of the sticked threads above (which I should have done in the first place) I requested this be moved to the blog section. Thanks.

Thanks for being 1 step ahead of the game

Update kinda. I only spent about an hour on the tank today, which is much more than usual :p but I was able to cut the plates, and then glue them down.

And what shall possibly be happening (I'm not sure if I like it all that much, the fists are kind of too large to replace the nobby things)

I'm loving all the replies guys I know it'll die down once the posts get more regular, but this is still wonderful.

Very nice.
A question about the fluff. They have markings to represent two of the other Imperial Fists successor chapters, does that mean that their gene seed came from those chapters as well and not just the Imperial Fists chapter itself?

Black Fists 1st Company @ 2010/11/30 09:37:13

Post by: shortsonfire79

Thank you Cadbren.
Really, the Imperial Fists and Crimson Fists have the same icon. But I couldn't help that. The Crimson Fists and Black Templar are two venerated successor chapters of the Imperial Fists. And I guess I felt the needed to be recognized on the banner as well.
The chapter descends directly from the Imperial Fists.

Post by: shortsonfire79

Thanks Element206. The Land Raider is something I've been working on for over a year. Or at least...thats when I started the thread for it.

WOW! Moved to page 2 of Blogs already!? Geez!

So I glued the top piece on.

And man...those layers I was complaining about..what an eye sore.

So I very slowly cut them off, took quite a while, but it actually wasn't tedious. I was pretty excited to be at the moment where its all fine detailing now.

And thanks to Green Putty.

And helping my dad at our apartment rentals. I was able to fill all the gaps left by the cuts. My father taught me how to patch holes in walls and stuff, using a putty spatula. So I did the same thing with an extra piece of plasticard. The Green Putty fills the gaps, then I screech it off, and its left in all the spots that aren't flat. Once it dried (2 minutes) I sanded it down with 600 grit sand paper.

My next task is now angling all the top plasticard to have the beveled edge of the Land Raider.

I have a lot to do... -_-

While I'm here, what do you think about this? I'm thinking that the fists may be a tad large for the launchers, but I want some advice. I could always replace some skulls with them instead.

AND! While I'm here, I'm looking for 4 of these EXACT thunderhammers. (Maybe you can see where I'm going with this )

AND! 2 of these Storm Shields. (Maybe you can see with this too, but more vague. )

And...2 of these as well.

Thanks for the comment RAAM13. I'm planning this, in place of this. More or less...

And yes Marovian, if you're looking, that was done in Physics again.

I spent a large chunk of my time last night and today figuring this out. I'm quite happy how it turned out all around, much better than before. I'll make groove lines and such tomorrow. Last day of school for the week!

If theres anything you'd like to see, please, let me know

Well, I finally decided to finish Telion. It was actually pretty difficult :( I don't like the arm placements at all, but I have no ideas on how to fix them! His left arm seems to be at an awkward angle (and his left hand seems huge (Its a SM arm, thats why -_- )) and his right arm seems to be pointing down funny...
But I am REALLY happy with the beard. When I went to take the pictures, I smooshed half of it with my thumb...I was sad...but it wasn't super hard to redo.

I don't think the fist emblem works that well, can you cut off some of the bottom so that it doesn't hang over the lower edge of his armour so much? The rest looks good, nice to see a Telion with hair on top of his head; the bald look bugs me for some reason.

So the plan is: rip off arm, completely re-sculpt it, and make him taller by the boots.
Then I'll have to figure out how to fix the chest fist...Not sure of how to do it. The size is well for Power and Tactical Dreadnought armor..but I guess not for scouts...

Well guys...I hate to be the lame-o who doesn't get anything done, so I tried to start and hopefully finish another vanguard squad tonight...but I just couldn't do it.
After a half hour of de-flashing 10 legs, 20 pieces of torso, and 20 pieces of backpack...I just couldn't get the urge to do anything.
But I managed to put one together, half...and two HORRIBLY static guys... I realized that the extra 2 running legs are on the dead dude, and one of the Death Company... :( So they're as static as can be..and rushed...

Hopefully I'll work up the courage to finish them tomorrow (I have to start studying for finals) and maybe even work on the Exterminus...

I'm really good with the ADD (I don't really have it, I just multitask..a lot) and so I've been flipping through Index Astartes I-IV and also Insignum Astartes. And have decided to make my veterans actually have some veteran markings. I like what I've done with them, but I'm not sure if its enough or too much.
I'd like to add some crusade checkers, like if they worked in concert with Black Templars or Ultramarines or something like that.
I really like the fist on the sergeant's helmet, even though its white...

Squad I, Sergeant.

Squad I, veteran.

Squad II, Sergeant.

Thanks guys. Somehow, I always work on the Land Raider for a while, then stop working on it only to pick it back up a month later... I want to blast through that this time and possibly finish it.

So this update is thanks to Sachiel for his always genius ideas. He recommended that I add the side banners to make them pop out a bit, so its not just a singular flat surface. So after trading a couple of PMs yesterday and today to clear some things, I worked them out. I like how they came out, the left one not so much, but the right one definitely.
Prewarpage:

Postwarpage:

And a little bit of hang-y:

I'll spray them up, then glue them on, then paint them. I'm also thinking of doing something similar to the banner piece on the top too, I'll figure something out.
Thanks Sachiel

Thanks Wolfshadow, Sachiel's idea.

Well, here are the promised WIPs. I added some depth to the top banner as well.

It will be cleaned up, don't worry. I'm waiting for it to dry.

And the newest project... My linebreaker squadron. Originally Dark Angels, I figured they could be redone in Black Fist colors for merit.

Keeping the tank name banners to replace them on the newly painted tanks.

To now:

They were supposed to get a spray today, but the girlfriend picked me up from school, so was over for 7 hours of my day..so tomorrow. (Class was canceled, so I don't have to go until 2, which is just to take a test, and then come home )

I realize that I now only have 2 of those circle icons left, and 4 of the lone fists...so...Milliput, here I come.
Also, I have received friendship from Mikhail of BolterandChainsword, who is shipping me a few fist icons and bitz as well. Also meeting the Milliput.
Also...I have scored several bitz orders from eBay. In the form of awesomness. so Sternguard assembly shall resume soon...hopefully after the Vanguard that haven't made any headway lately... -_-
[hr]Well, I'm sure you remember these two static guys.

Instead of cutting them up and repositioning them. I took the lazy rode, and just gave them different arms... :p

But...if you don't put them next to each other, they don't look so pathetic.

Yep, thats right. I churned out 10 marines in about 2 hours. (Sans heads and shoulderpads) I think that these fellows turned out okay. Not super actiony, but not stating either.
Sachiel wrote:Head down, shoulder barging througha door or enemy squad, i always imagined marines as being almost like tanks on legs so they'd be able to crush enemies out of their way with their own bulk and the bulk of the power armour.

Sachiel, the guy in the first group pic, second from the right. Hes the one with the pose. I tried to do it as best I could with something bigger than a normal arm.

And, if you look in the picture of the two dudes with the whips, you may see a thin strand of greenstuff. Thats for redoing sergeant big-o.

And of course...once again..I am out of 30mm bases...drat...

Thanks Wolfshadow.

Well, I played my first game last night. At something my LGS calls the "Young Generals Friday." To say the least, I felt very out of place. All the kids there (minus the 'teacher' that I played) was about 9ish...And they were all almost my height....
Since there were 5 of us kids, I played the teacher in a 1 on 1, and we chose 750 points. It was fun... The only thing is, I don't have a playable army, since I'm making a 1st company, of veterans, I don't technically have any Troop choices...so I had to pull out a heavy weapons guy from each squad, and replace them with something that looked like it was holding a bolter (I had to use the "Plasma is Totally Worth it Marine" and a librarian. :p)
So I ran: 750 points
Space Marine Captain-
Thunderhammer and Storm Shield

Dreadnought-
TL Lascannon and Close Combat Weapon

10 Man Tactical Squad
Heavy Bolter, Powerfist

10 Man Tactical Squad
Multi-melta, meltagun

5 Man Tactical Squad.

And he had 4 squads of Imperial Guardsmen, 2 lascannons, 6 flamethrowers, 3 meltaguns, and 3 plasmaguns.
We played killpoints.
He killed my 5 man squad, and the Multimelta squad. And I killed all of his guardsmen. The Dreadnought didn't do much, and my Captain almost failed all of his attacks. He finished with 1 wound left, but we never did anything, though I'm sure its basically just another save.
He walked me through the dice rolls, and moves and stuff. And then after the game, since he never shot at my Dreadnought, he explained to me armor saves.

So I need to finish those scouts...so I can have enough troop choices, or just make 6 or more extra Tactical marines, to shuffle into my squads for normal games.
I don't know what to do. Maybe if I don't end up using all my squads in a game, I can just shuffle in those marines.

Here is the Vanguard squad. They're awaiting greenstuff shoulderpads like the Heavy Bolter squad has. And bitz. Tons of little bitz that I'm waiting for from eBay.

And the Vindicators were sprayed. And then I slaved over the black paint to go over them again...that was no fun...

Monday starts Finals, and then Wednesday is the end of the semester, so hopefully I'll be able to model for a nice month before next semester starts. (Yep, thats right. I get a whole month and a half off without classes. )
Oh, and the Thunderbolt sold. But I say that I don't ship internationally, and the person who bought it is in Australia. So their shipping is $41...vs my listed $11. I'm still awaiting payment...

Thats a crapton of Vindicators.

And I too feel your pain on wating on the mail. Except I'm waiting on shipments from the swap shop and from GW itself.

I'd have some photos to update my log with, except for the fact that my wife has wandered off with the camera.

Ah well.

Nice work. Those GS whips are a nice, different CCW touch that will make your guys stand out on the tapetop.

Find the camera yet?

Woohoo!!!
I had my last final today! Yess. So I have until January 22 to do nothing! Sweet!!! So expect updates. Ppprobably by Friday.

Here is my first Vanguard Squad, the sergeant's whips need to be redone. And of course, they need proper detailing.

WELL! My first day of freedom. And my FW bitz arrived...though they're the wrong pieces....I'll have to make due..

It looks alright. So I'm not worried at all. I just have to make sure to glue on the engine cover.

Lets see. I also got some ork bullet casing things. In little piles and streams for my heavy bolter guys. The ones on the bases will be placed correctly, I had to squeeze them in there for the picture.

And I got a butt-ton of tiny Terminator Crux's... supposedly 200 of them. Which is much more than I need, by a long shot. But just in case.

And you know, I took my math final early this morning. And I'm feeling REALLY mathy still...

Why so many box magazines you say? Well, there are 22, and I have to outfit around 50 Sternguard with bolters, so I think that this gives a bit of variation I'd say.

And I've also finished assembly of my Lascannon squad. Put some greenstuff shoulderpad icons, some sand, and I can be ready to paint them!

I'd like to, but I also post on Ammobunker, BolterandChainsword, and Warseer, etc. I don't want them to think I'm cheating on them with another forum now do I?
I broke out Shortsonfire81's Photobucket account, so now we're in the clear.

Thats a crapton of Stormbolters sacrificed.

I hope you got those bitz cheap, or had them lying around. And also... Wow, thats a lot of Crux Teminatus'....

And heck, I dont know if it works, but I wouldn't care, as long as the hosting works. :-)

Photobucket isnt too bad, but Imageshack gets filterpwned by a lot of work filters.

Thats the other thing that I really like about the Dakka gallery. It almost completely circumvents most work filters. A lot of Dakkaites 'visit' while working and if the filter is at all a good one, Photobucket and Imageshack will be blocked.

Wolfshadow. Thanks. I kkknnooowww its a ton of storm bolters....They were pretty cheap, $6 for all of them if I remember correctly. And I'm not stressing, since every SM tank you buy comes with one anyways (unless you get it used) A TON of terminatus'.
I'll contemplate the Dakka gallery. I know a lot of people use the Warseer one too...

I haven't done much recently, but I stayed up all night watching Avatar, and I managed to base all my unbased models.

And the one from today. December 22, 2010. There would be 2 Thunderbolts, (duh) but one of them is sitting in a box, because I'm waiting to GET PAID FROM EBAY!!!! Grrrrrrr. Its been 3 weeks since it sold, and I haven't been paid. Filed a complaint with eBay a few days ago, see what happens.

Another Maxmini fan.

Wolfshadow, definitely a Maxmini fan. If I could buy more of their product, I would. Yes, you read that correctly. My 1st company will have 20 Vanguard, 60 Sternguard, and 30 Terminators. Counting to 110, plus heros and command.

Jetjetex, thank you very much...and...its just a rhino... hahaha

Sookay. Here we go. Back to the drawing boards with the Big'un. I'm looking for some ideas to populate the top of my Land Raider with, and I'm not sure of what to do. I've gone with the obvious hatches...but I'm thinking that 4 more on top is a bit too many (not including the 2 on the frontal section).

Thats the old Dark Angels Chronus I made. I've moved on, but I will be placing a Chronus look-a-like somewhere on my model, and I liked him in the back, where he'd be deaf from missile launch. I know for sure I want a Chronus and possibly a stormbolter or something. (I was initially thinking multimelta...but with 4 lascannons, I think I'm set with the heavy weapons)

I could take one of the hatches off, and leave the back with 3.

Haven't started the panel details yet...
Pretty much any advice will be taken. I won't be making any promises though.

Is this strictly a modelling project or do you plan on actually playing with them?

Black Fists 1st Company @ 2010/12/29 13:15:46

Post by: shortsonfire79

Um....not sure. hahaha. So far, its just modeling. If my LGS ever plays Apoc, I'll be there. But I've only played one game so far anyways, I didn't have a lot of fun though.

Alright, I had planned on staying up all night, since I normally don't go to bed until 2AM, and I was hoping to be able to fall asleep at a reasonable time at my girls tomorrow...but its now 5AM, and I'm sleepy...rats.. I kind of burnt myself out on the modeling in one go...

But I did manage to paint majority of my vindicators. I got the blue done to my liking, and the black is...passable. I haven't done any details yet, but I reglued the name tags on.

I'd really like to do some freehand on the 3 siege shields, but I don't know what I want on there, and if I want them to be a story all together, or have their each individual stuffs.

And this is how I plan on laying out the blue and black on all my Rhino based variants.

I like this idea a lot. If you want variation in your SG magazines then use the round drum from the ork boyz shootas.

Much like this one (thank arakasi for the picture)
Just trim it to fit the slot for magazines in the bolter.
A nice idea with some decent conversions, how old are you btw, cos you talk about teachers and stuff....and this is some really good work.

Wolfshadow: Yeah, I saw that. That was pretty cool. I think, I'll probably end up with 55 sternguard, so in normal games, I can take out the heavy weapons, and count them just as troop choices. I think 20 is just enough for any army. They're way too expensive to use en masse.

Imperial monkey: Thanks for that! I originally used a more 'rare' Imperial Guard grenade magazine for my drum mags. I think I shall be using Orks if I can find me some. I'm 18. Though, with my stature, I could probably pull of 16...

I always thought thats how the fingers are supposed to be, like...layered armor. Hah, oops.

Thanks guys. I've been working on some freehand..sort of.
I haven't made much progress. Originally, I was going to do an Imperial Eagle like the vindicators from a past GW article.

But its not snazzy enough. So I decided to try a battle scene, notably from my story, "War for Atalcina" which was my marines combined with PDF and Ultramarines against a splinter of Hive Fleet Leviathan.

You can see a little bit of art above the shields. Thats supposed to be a Hive Tyrant standing on an exploded Stormlord. And a Vindicator (which I should have put behind the blocky thing) that is supposed to be a wall, with marines on it... yeah...art isn't my strong point...
I'll try and come up with a more plausible idea...

Thanks Moonshine.

I've decided in a few minutes that I will follow the Eagle.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
o quickly ran into a problem with the icons that I placed on the shields, so I attempted to remove it, which came off quite easily, but left a ton of glue residue...which I didn't know how to handle, so I got out my powerdrill, and a large bored drill bit, and just chunked it off. Then placed green putty over the holes to smooth out. Didn't turn out well...

Fail.

But I started work on the Aquila anyways. I deliberated a long time on where I wanted to put the center at. I decided to offset it from the cannon after finding that the head wouldn't be big enough to span the large gap.
After 20 minutes of failure with a pencil and no marks at all on the shield, I just decided to line out with yellow paint. I plan on making this a rich orange, with yellow highlights in the end.
I think at the moment, it looks pretty good, if not too splotchy. I hope you can make out what I've done so far.

Let me know what you think please.

Well..after burning myself out on Minecraft (or so what I think) I think I may have time to rediscover my Mojo.
After 6ish hours of Minecraft (yep....and thats only today. Its been about the same for the past 4 days...) I spent a half hour on the Aquila, at 3:30 in the morning... I think I'm pleased. The wings turned out alright but not fantastic. The gap between the dozers was the hardest part, and I still have its left side to do...
The first wing on both blades were definitely the hardest...and I'm not pleased with them at all...too late to go back though!
The Defiant's (right) blade's wings will obviously start curving sooner, since the Aquila's body isn't placed exactly center. So I think if I can pull it off, it'll leave me with a nice effect.
Let me know what you think.
Oh, and if you can't make heads or tails of what what line goes to....don't worry about it...I can't either. :p I tried to mark at the edges of each wing so I would know when painting time comes...

Thanks.

So I messed up SEVERAL times on the right side of the shield....took me a while to get it. And it still looks naff (hehe, I love using British slang...or whatever its considered. )

And then I blocked it in. I blocked it in in the lightest color I had that was foundation paint: Dheneb Stone. It will eventually be a completely different color. I messed up many areas. But I didn't bother blocking them all in in black yet. I did a few around the head, but I decided to do the rest once I finish the orange final color.

The right side of the eagle is slowed looking, I know. But its the best I'll be able to do.

I did this coat on the same night as my last update. But I didn't work myself up to post it on here again.

Also, for my Band of Brothers competition thing. I've been working on my servitors for the month. I like the way that they've been done. I've actually put a lot more time in them than probably...my Chapter Master even. I'll be using plasticard for the servo arms, and I'll be trying to locate some bead to use as arm socket pieces. I'm using Catachan bitz (Super lucky I had those) and probably a lot of greenstuff and some plasticard. If you're wondering what the little round things are, I think they're plug in ports for the Techmarines. I am quite proud of these models...even though there isn't much done on them.

I'm also on the hunt for 2 female faces, that fit well with 40k. Preferably with a mono-tone, dumb-like look.

I'm on the hunt for some guitar wire...I might run down to the music shop tomorrow after lunch or something...

Just to show that I'm not completely brain dead, from Minecraft and staying up until 5 daily...
I worked on the Trogdread today. Took a LOT of work...much cutting/filing involved with the damn solid metal core of a body I chose.

I still require shoulder joints, shinguards, and some stuff to cover up gaps and stuff.

And a size comparison. The green pad and the camera battery are for base height.

“What was your first thought as you first laid eyes on The Glory?”

“My first thought? Hmm… Well I had seen my fair share of battleships, Emperors, Retributions, and one or two Apocalypses. I had been told that The Glory was a top of the line, unique, and massive new battleship. So when I saw the prow of The Glory, I wasn’t impressed. As my shuttle rounded the moon towards the shipyard, I first saw the massive ventral cannon, and torpedo tubes dotting the armored nose of the ship. I instantly knew that I was looking at a Retribution. I wasn’t overly impressed… As more of the ship came into view, I noticed major changes in the hull design… and the bristling weapons, the large rear hull. It was a massive work of art. I was awe inspired by the sheer mass of the ship that was larger than any mad made object I had ever seen. Even some of the hive cities I’ve laid eyes on had nothing on this colossus. I was baffled to say the least.”

“Mhmm, colossus…baffled… Alright, and how did you feel taking the role of captain of this ‘colossus’?”

“Well, I’d been captain of a small frigate and a cruiser previously, never anything over three kilometers long. Now all of a sudden I had been promoted to captain a ship that would take me hours to walk down the length of it. I was nervous, and unsure of how to handle the goliath. I was uncertain of why the admirals had chosen me to lead this castle into the void, but I wasn’t going to object. I was told that I would be responsible for nearly 10 million crew members, and even Solar Admiral Pike as well. Yeah, I was nervous. I would have been happy to take role of first officer.”

“Hmm…alright…and last one…what did you think of the firepower of The Glory?”

“The ability to not have to close in range with the enemy is the main key of The Glory. I can sit back and hit the enemy hard, and then disgorge nearly 200 attack craft at once, which is enough to wipe out nearly anything. The several lance cannons on my ship are great for long range, far enough where if the enemy comes close to hit me, they’ll already be severely crippled. Torpedos are expensive pieces of weaponry, I tend to use my energy weapons when I have the chance, and hardly ever use torpedoes, though they do make fantastic fireworks.”

“Okay, thank you for your time Captain Andrew McManus, your interview will surely be seen on every hive world in the Imperium. You are doing a fine job as captain, keeping Terra well protected."

Unpainted view of the finished Glory

The other day, my dad had told me "I borrowed some of your black Krylon spray." I didn't mind. Until today, I found out that by 'borrowing' he meant he used all of it. I was kinda sad. Hahaha. So I used the gray Krylon that I had bought for the underside of my Thunderbolts (which one sold this morning for $145 )

And I hand primed black. Never again will I have to do that...that was so horrible..

And the blued finish project. I purposely added a last layer of skull white with a hint of ice blue in it to make my ship slightly lighter than all the others. Its noticeable, but it doesn't ruin the painting.

And with the left over paint, I repainted all the other ships in the fleet. So now we're all up to date.

And my family has been working on making our own beer the past week. And today we bottled it, to let ferment/gain carbonation for another 7 days.

2.5 gallons worth of a honey wheat hefenweizen. I'm still underaged here in America, so I'm technically not allowed to drink

Oh Christ I miss the days me and my old man used to make our own beers, the smells and the flavours of the whole process are just so good, and the first tasting, oh, you're a lucky man.

On a painting note Glory is fething amazing, I've never that model before so I take it that its a scratch build.

Thank you BunnyGurl.

LEnnysmash: It is great, it should be nice and fizzy by tomorrow, so we'll probably drink it tomorrow night or Sunday, whenever we get the chance.
The BFG ship is a kit bash of a Battleship Retribution, Battlebarge, and two Space Marine Cruisers. And hull bitz of an Emperor Battleship too I guess. Thanks for the praise. Almost done!

So I've painted a handful of details on the Glory.

I have basecoated the prow of the ship with Dheneb Stone and some Bleach Bone-mix thing from my Deathwing. That'll get the proper highlights once I finish the gold.

And this is the engine bank. I'll attempt to do the glowy blue that is commonly seen on BFG ships. We'll see how it turns out...

Something I've come to realize...is that the spot where I hold the model while I paint, is starting to chip...which is leaving me with terrible silver spots... And also some of the tips on the hangars are too...So I glued the ship to the base....which I figured I'd paint before I glued the ship on. And after I glued...I remembered...Oh well.

So I think the Trogdread actually looks like something now.

Hopefully I can get some painting done in a week... Hopefully the final 'progressful' stint will be soon.

And TerminatorinHell from the B&C said that I should repose him to look like hes stomping on something. I argued that I couldn't get a stomping pose out of him, with his chest like so. So I met him in the middle. I added a bit of detail, and glued him together. I just need a couple rivets and cabling and I think I can call him done.

And the servitors are done too I think. I can't stand guitar cable, so I won't be adding more of that, and I'll think about adding some rivets...maybe.

Now to paint... I have 7 days...which I also have an essay and two exams in...this may be close.

I've started painting for the B.O.B, and I at the slow rate I'm going....I'm going to be squeezing it for the 28th... The servitors are halfway done. The skin is supposed to look like it does, since they are half living mechanical beings. We'll see what kind of update I'll have tomorrow night.

I think a grey paint wash might benefit the servitor's skin just to pick out a few of the lines. I do like the tone you're going for though. The Servitors have always reminded me of the Borg tbh and I think the idea of pale dead flesh suits them much better than the traditional skin tones that I see most people painting them.

Thanks Lennysmash. I had actually used a blue wash before laying on another layer of dheneb stone. After a lot of input for the skin, I just mixed dheneb stone with some brown ink that I had. It made a nice rich skin tone that I put on the outer most areas of the skin. I didn't have any skin paints, so I had to improvise. Servitors remind me of the borg as well, or something along those lines, and I wanted to make them look as half dead as I could.
By the way, our beer turned out kind of bitter, we'll have better luck next time

Ravenwing, thanks ;D

Alright, so I had to rush these guys since I wanted to get finished with them so I could play with my new toys.

Heres the Dreadnought, yet to be named.

And the servitors. I added some brown around where the metal bits met the flesh, as I figure the flesh would be a bit worn.

It happens but that's all part of the fun. We used to keep a beer log. I know it sounds a bit nerdy but it really helps 1) to spot any mistakes that may have happened and 2) if you do play around with your mixes it allows you to keep an exact record of how you made it so you can replicate it again and again if you like the results.

Back on models - great stuff as always, not entirely convinced the dread is in the right position though it may of course be the angle. He just seems a little too twisted at the waist. Naming wise what kind of sound are you going for Roman, Greek, Medieval Knight?

Thanks for that tip Lenny, I'll tell my family tomorrow and we'll see if we can remember what we did
Models: I'll try and get you another picture, hes supposed to look like hes striding forwards, with his flamer pointing front, and his drill arm going back, like a normal person. My chapter is a successor to the Imperial Fists, so I'm thinking something along the lines of a Medieval Knight?
So showing up on the last day of the BoB, my new toys have been really useful these past few hours. With the late arrival of my mail (4pm...) I was thrilled to find a box from Blick Studios!
In said box?

#2 extra firm Royal Sovereign Ltd UK Clay Shapers. (yeah, I don't know what half of that means) They're the smallest you can get, I believe, and made of firm rubber. When I ordered them, they were just listed at #2 Clay Shapers. So I got the ones I was hoping to get.
Only thing is...is that I think they may have been used. The flat chisel has some weird scored lines on it, on both sides, in a mirrored effect.

I'm almost certain that they're supposed to be smooth. So after playing with the shapers for a good hour or so, I gave customer service a call. The robotic lady said that they'll ship me a whole new set, free of charge!
So that made me pretty happy.
After using them for a bit, I think that they're quite nice, and very useful. Though I don't see them doing anything that I haven't done before with a regular clay tool..except that its all much more simple.
So I tested them out by looking at examples from Lamenter and his Master of the Forge website. And Doghouse. Both have great techniques, and I'm attempting to mix the two.
Starting small with some heads. I used Lamenter's MKV tutorial for these. And the two knight looking ones, I used Forgeworld's Librarian Loth's command squad as an example. This picture was taken while the Greenstuff was still soft.

I took the first marine that I had done, and started adding rivets, from a Brita water filter. But I screwed it up when I was drilling and tore up a bit of the greenstuff, AND made one of them in the wrong spot...

I plan on buying a couple hundred rivets from Grandt, a model railroading company, with advice from Lamenter. These seem much easier to use, as I don't need to drill a hole first in order to get them to actually look rivet-ish.

Thats all I'm sharing for now, as I have a couple other projects that I've started. I don't want to throw all my precious material at you!
Let me know what you think I'm pretty new to this sculpting thing, and if you have any tips and pointers, I'd be happy to hear them

Snap I picked up a pack of colour shapers on monday. Sorry to say though that #2 isn't the smallest you can get, they actually go down to size 0. But to honest with what i've seen of your skills that shouldn't be a problem.

As to sculpting youtube has some fantastic series on sculpting, in the end you best bet is just to pick up some armature wire and go crazy. Build and play is the only way to learn. If you can pick up a few sculpting mediums too. So you got your GS but pick up some other modelling clays too.

Haha, funny coincidence Lenny! How small are 0s in relation to...I dunno..a ruler I guess?
I've watched a handful of youtube vids, and I'll be going to go look for more shortly. I'll look into investing in some Super Sculpy, though I'm leaning more towards adding on to minis, rather than create my own. I'm not skilled enough for that .

Heres my latest project, also following Lamenter's techniques/tutorials. I'm really just playing around with some looks, and working on getting the feel of the tools, and how they work. Using Lamenter's pictures, I know what the model is actually supposed to look like.
This is an extended and bulked up chainsword arm. I cut the forearm in half, and added a 1mm piece of plasticard, and then greenstuffed the armor plate around it. After that dried, I added the wrist cuff. And then today, the elbow pad.

I like the way it looks, though it doesn't look all that much bigger. When I put it on my original True Scale man, the arm was quite stumpy...and when I put it on a normal man, it looked fat.

You sharp eyed hawks may notice that there is a lump in the forearm. I assume that thats A: Where I made the cut (which I'm sure it is) or B: an air bubble in my greenstuff, which has happened to me before. Several attempts at smoothing it at the beginning, 2 hours later, and 5 hours later didn't help at all. I attempted to sand it before adding the elbowpad, but it didn't help. It'll be fixed on the next arm

Some of you may remember my first couple attempts at sculpting tiny details for my Space Marine chapter...Funny right?

Well, now that I know how to use my tools properly, I've given it a second go. I think the outcome is MUCH nicer, though it still needs a lot of stuff to be cleaned up, notably the fingers. I am still quite pleased with myself.

Well, I was holding this back for a day or so, as hes not quite finished. But I'm eager to get some feedback on him. His arms and backpack are blue-tacked on, but the torso and legs are attached. I need to add some major details like tubes for his stomach and panel lines and such. I'm still using these few models for tests with my clay shapers, so I can get used to them and such. You'll notice some blemishes on the putty, and probably more than a few lumps here and there as well.
I'm looking into some brown stuff, as I could possibly get harder angles with it, though I'll have to do more experimenting with green stuff before I spend even more money.
After looking at a normal marine, I realize that his torso is MUCH too skinny around the waist, something that I'll have to look into in the second model. We'll see what you guys think and what I should be changing on him.

A picture with a normal marine. You can see that hes not actually that much bigger than him height-wise, but he is bulkier looking (considering the normal man doesn't have any arms)

And a picture with my first true scaled Marneus Calgar. You can see hes considerably smaller, but is much more well done. I'm sure I'll eventually get the hang of it.

After looking around some other true scales from times of old, I've noticed that things like panel lines and the like should be modeled with a wet knife while the putty is still soft, so unfortunately, I missed that with this guy. Next one though.
I'm also researching/testing some ways to make true scales without using terminator legs..because these things are damn expensive! If you have any ideas, please give me a shout out.

Can you say double post?

They look great. I actually think the slimmer waist looks good too, it adds to the illusion of height. I'd say get a smaller base though, you should pick up some 30mm ones I think they'd do the job nicely.

The only way of doing TS marines without Terminator legs is actually cutting through the shins and thighs and lengthening the legs that way. Also adding in the 'washer' around the waist and blending that into the torso.

Thanks Lennysmash I attempted to add a bit of bulk to the guy's hips with some pouches. Let me know if that helps I have 30mm bases, but I use those for my actual army. I figured that this guy probably won't see the light of day again, so I just grabbed a spare base. If I ever get serious about this though, I'll definitely use some 30mms.
Thanks for the other tip about cheaper truescaling. I have already attempted some crude form of it down below, so check that out and let me know what you think of that.

I think its safe to call my man finished.

Instead of doing truescaling, I think I'll just attempt to replicate armor variants that FW hasn't done yet. IE: Make up my own... (or have my design student friend do some for me). The truescaling was fun and all, but the amount of effort going into just one guy, with the half-shoddy outcome just isn't satisfying...

I have also spent a good... 8 hourly sessions (I can count from all the layers..) on this guy's legs. Its my first attempt at layered armor, using Lamenter's techniques. I think for a starter, it came out alright. You can see where some of the lower levels of green stuff has kind of folded/wrinkled because I was impatient and started the next layer after about 3 hours. Mistake. It was just a test, but I should probably go back and sand it down a little. Its not terrible, but after looking at it for a while, it pops out at me.
Also note that sculpting is difficult, and attempting to sculpt something fairly symmetrical on one leg, then attempting to do it on the other is not something that I will ever be good at. I can't even do it drawing with a ruler! D: Woe is me...

And I also tested out a couple other true scale techniques on my pile of random test subjects I acquired from someplace...

Far Left, Calgar: Terminator legs with an extension somewhere in the shin plastic. The feet are slightly angled in from the extension, but its hardly noticeable. The chest was also bulked out forwards and sideways. I used terminator arms, a normal sized helm and a normal sized backpack.
Second from left: Terminator legs, with just some greenstuff around the backs. The chest piece was bulked out forwards, but not left to right, therefor making the model skinnier around the waist. The arms were normal marine arms, with 1mm extensions in the forearms and greenstuff armor resculpted. Normal head, and expanded backpack.
Middle: Extended shins and thighs by 1mm. The legs look longer, but without altering the torso, it looks funny. Also note the wide stance. Not even close to being as tall as the other two marines.
Second from right: Extended shins by 1mm. Not much shorter nor taller than the two marines next to it. You can see that the feet are angled because of the extensions since they are not proportional.
Far Right: Normal snap fit marine.

Let me know what you think about all of that.

Second one from the left is the best. For the AoBR marines I think you should get one and cut the legs into pieces completely at the soft armour joints and have a play around with adding height in the soft armour. Especially at the knees as you could construct new knee pads to disguise the conversion work.

On a slightly off topic note, do you have any plans for those two AoBR sergeants that you have sat in that pile-o-marines?
If not would you be interested in a swap for them?

Lennysmash: Thanks for the input. I'll play around with the soft armor a bit, I have the extras to try. And I don't have a play (yet) for the two sergeants. What would you have in mind for a trade? They're cheap plastic, so I'm not expecting much at all.

Thanks Manoknock!

I usually have a separate thread for my misc projects and my SM chapter, but I'll just combine the two here.
My next project has hit the table, though I haven't made any actual progress yet, just some sketches.
Hopefully you can deduce what I'll be doing. I'll explain later

The three left over snap-fit Eldar warriors that I had from that one paint test a while ago.

And it was a great day with the mail. My replacement sculpting tools showed up as well.

And like the second part of the thread title says...we have a problem.... I foresee work on something in this post to be postponed...one way or another.
Khorne Blood Slaughterer

And the twins.

Also looks like I picked up a couple of dreadnought arms...that I don't recall ordering. But it does make sense, since I've been wanting a Mortis w/ Lascannons.

Well that was an epic update. The stuff looks great. I'm guessing that you are considering SoB conversions. That's great but can I also tempt you with looking into Sisters of Silence conversions. Pre-date the SoB and form part of the HH era fluff.

As to the trade I'll PM you so as not to side track your thread.

Ditto the call for Sisters of Silence! And nice luck on getting the freebie lascannons. Sometime FW's questionable order fulfillment works out in the positive...

Well, I Lexicanumed the Sisters of Silence. And I like the concept, but I don't like the fact that they don't talk...I like talking.
And there isn't much about them and all... I'll model them like SoB, but I'll contemplate going about with the SoS!

Alright guys...well...I've definitely been neglecting my posting duties... :(
I'll get to all the threads eventually! But the past night and a half, I started sculpting my first Sister of Battle...its cruddy, but it'll do for now. The things on the sides are arm sockets.

And a size comparison with a real sister.

I'll assume that Space Marine power armor is 1-3 inches thick. Just...because I'll also assume that a Sister of Battle's armor would be at least half of that. Push those eyes up and add some armor, and that'll add about an inch or two to her bust.
I'm also sculpting to GW sizes as well. I can't do any smaller (damn torso is smaller than my pinky nail!).

They're pretty much the same size, except the crosses on mine are thicker and fatter. So you can complain to GW about their eyes being too big, then we can talk

Another hour's worth of progress. These updates really suck, haha, I make a bit o progress, and I post a picture. I should find something else to update with next time...
I chunked out the blue and the black. Usually I'll spray the models, paint the bases, and go over the entire model in black, covering the parts missed with spray and cleaning up feet/legs. This time, I just went straight to blue after the bases, and then did the black. Much easier, looks the same, and I skipped the most tedious part of the whole painting process! Score!

At this rate, I should have highlights and maybe more done by tomorrow...though I'm going out to San Francisco to visit the family again...Dang Chinese families and having to see each other EVERY WEEKEND!! Oh well, we're close.

Great blog, some really cool ideas going on here.

Looking forward to the next update!
