Perkustin's Dark Eldar [Odds and Ends] @ 2010/12/09 15:42:17

Post by: Perkustin

I havent bought or painted a model in five year but As with most GW fence-sitters i was pushed off by the release of the new dark eldar. So i bought supplies and practised my painting...
Heres is the result, a CSM half heartedly stripped and belonging to no particular legion.

Lessons learned,
painting on a grey basecoat, although giving a nice finish, has it's challenges (see grey 'shadows')
Painting Space marines imo is boring and time consuming.
Red is hard to pull off.
Bone is fun to paint and gives a nice effect with minimal effort.
Likewise with gold.

So taking on board these lessons i bought my first box sets.
For those interested 2 Kabalite warriors, 1 wyches, Reavers and an Archon.

Without further ado here is my first, pretty much, finished model (Sans Rider obviously!)

As you can see it sports an unusual colour scheme. I Lovingly christened it ''bone n' cucumber'' (Haha or should that be "double n' Entendre".)
The bone looks better in person but in my opinion the 'cucumber' looks great even in the photo.

Check in soon for the finished reaver squadron as i am making great progress (now that i can start batch painting).

C & C welcome.

Yeah, unusual scheme, but it should work perfectly!!!

Maybe a bit too "glossy" for non-Nurgle minis, but stills looks good!

Post by: Perkustin

Been a while. Cheers guys, Thanks Neil101, far too complimentary as always haha. Yggdrisal, the gloss comes from the ink i apply to the basecoat, the matte highlight combined with the gloss shadow to me makes it look more organic and 'Boney', hard to explain. Haven't had the internet for a hideously long period, anyway, aside from the slow process of assembly i have made some decent progress with painting.
Here is the finished reaver squad i will admit that while the bikes were a joy to paint i found the riders a bit of a chore hence they don't quite equal the quality of the bikes. All in all they look pretty good in the flesh.

I have also finished my archon he is not at all photogenic, only the helmet looks any good in the photo. If you are wondering what he is holding it is a Hydra Gauntlet and a razor flail, i thought it made a good Agonizer as i am not a fan of the whip. The armour doesn't look great as i was attempting something with gloss medium, it looked great on the test mini but not on the archon. I am into minds as to whetheror not to will strip'im and retry.

The model that i am most proud of is the hekatrix, she is simple and not particularly cleanly painted but shows off the scheme brilliantly IMO.

A final thing of note is my second shardnet conversion. I add this because it is a common dilema among DE army collectors, here is my solution made from flexi- ties and paperclips.

I couldn't be bothered doing a cross weave as i decided it already looked good enough.

I am just finishing my trueborn Dracon and he should be done soon, i have learned from my mistakes on the Archon and he is shaping up nicely. The big conversion project is the transformation of two empire wizards into Haemonculi, more on this soon.

Raider mount looks really cool.

Archon looks really great, and i'd really like to get a closer look at him. Maybe the only comment i'd have is that his weapon look a bit dull compared to the rest of the mini.

Close up picture would be really nice to see

The edging on the jetbikes looks really good and baroque somehow. Not too fond of the browney scheme personally but I really like the effect.

Thanks to everyone for the supportive comments! 8-). Long time no update and i only got a couple of things to show for it. Thought i would do something fun for the photo so here goes.

The annoying thing is that my dad (who's camera it is) is a model railroad engineer (makes model steam trains) and he seems to able to take great pictures without messing with the settings, i however have to take about twenty pictures till i get a semi decent one. The guardsmen were painted a while back but hold up quite well today. More within the week mainly the completed wyches.

high contrast always look great on tabletop. It won't win any award in close up picture like CMoN, but when on the table, they are simply amazing.

Your Achon is great, even if i personally think his helmet should have been painted like the rest of his armor (with high contrast).

Great Job.

Wyches, bar one who escaped my attention, are done. They were initially a chore but once they started shaping up it was a mad creative sprint to finsh 'em.

Image is a bit murky but i was tired of my models looking hideous under flash.

UPDATE: Hmm looking back at it that photo is a bit rubbish, doesn't really show much...

Thanks bunnygirl
Here's some more. Through flukish chance i got the camera to do good by me. I give you my first trueborn and the first attempt at full armour with my scheme.

The dracon annoyingly has taken on a more yellowish hue in his armour, the troops however have a nice lack of warmth in there armour wgich i think suits the DE. The armless are getting blasters, i primed their arms today along with a raider. I was thinking of adding a red sash perhaps for a bit of 'spot colour' does anyone have an opinion? I was quite pleased with the red on the archon's cloak so would love to give it a shot.

Gosh darnit has been a while. I haven't really been painting that much lately partly due to too much time on dakka/lack of photography skill. I have however slowly been painting my raider one highlight at a time. Here is the near finish result. (It will at some point have crew and superstructure lol)

Heres is a simple haemonculus based on a warhammer wizard. The liquifier is meant to be a stargate style staff weapon but it also looks a bit like somekind of transfusion trolley which i spose is pretty cool.

Thanks for looking , will pll my finger out and give the Haemonculus a lick of paint tomorrow. Peace out (Gads i would never say that in real life, darn you internet! )

Hey Perky , I forgot all about your blog , i hadnt seen it in such a long time ..;-) I hadnt seen all the other pics , your dark eldar are terryfying , i like the pale , skin against your beautifully bizzare , languid colour tones, the jet bike riders look great with the blue hair, i think you really captured a otherworldly qaulity with these guys, btw did you replace an orb with that head on the wizard? if you did your a sick puppy , MORE!!!please I hadnt ralised how cool these new Dark eldar were until now, Cheers mate!

It's a marauder head i assumed the Haemy would be fascinated by the lovely beard, as i guess they would be novel to the body-hairless (I think) eldar. Funny the blue hair is one of my favourites elements as well thats why the wyches got the same treatment.

Cheers bunnygurl! Oh i meant to add in the last post that the colour scheme is inspired by a nightmare i had about a creepy triffid style plant with a dry leathery body and a great eyeless beak. An honourable mention must also go to these as well.

Rediscovered these on my bookshelve about a year ago, thought they were great pictures.

Right long time no Update. Apologies Neil.

First of all here's some Fluff, think it will be in two possibly three parts all of equal length. This is just an Intro and is sort of meant to be quite mysterious. Without further ado i give you the tale of the Dowager Empress and Tendulker Twice Damned, Archon of the Perverse Fist Kabal.

She stared, eye contact for a few seconds, her eyes then crept down him to survey his warsuit. The black lacquered plates, although clean, still bore the stains of cousin's blood and the arterial filth of Mon'keigh. Again she looked him in the eye, he couldn't help noticing hers, glowing bright blue as they augured into his own. She opened her mouth to speak. The beautiful visage suddenly shattered when a her cankered tongue ran slowly over yellowed teeth...

He awoke with a start, it was her again, as if she alone ruled sovereign in his dreams. Somehow she was part of his past, a past he refused to recall. Confused, he shifted in the bed to look upon his mate. The bed sheet hung loosely around her hips leaving her back bare to the voyeur walls. He tentatively pulled the sheet over her modesty and whispered,
'Why do we always sleep with our backs to those we love?' she turned to answer, woken by the familiar voice.
'A mystery for the ages' she said reassuringly, the same answer to the same question day after day.
He pivoted to rise to the day, he knew she had already resumed her slumber.

Limbs still slowed by sleep, he took a leisurely eight seconds to assume his modest overalls and fasten the robust sandals. Ready for the day he took a deep breath, purposely channelling the newly oxygen enriched blood to his brain, finally escaping drowsiness. He ran his hands down his forearms, the heavily calloused palms sliding noisily against perfectly smooth wrists. Feeling for the choicest fruit he took his pick from the bounty of the vine that hugged the bedroom doorway. The male bit into the breakfast fruit, the viscous pulp flowed along the billions of taste buds that covered his tongue; sweet to sour and all facets between. It was eaten gratefully as he would need the energy for the labours the day would bring.

The Grove stretched out before him, it ringed his homestead in a verdant perimeter, each flower hand pollinated, each bough heavy with the fruit to sustain the male and his partner. It resembled no earthly garden being not bordered or brutally truncated. Each plant grew in glorious liberty, unbent to meddling will but each one resplendent of it's own accord. He did not think such things of course, it was proper to take pride in one's work but not to dwell. He shouldered the compact tiller as he made towards the bare earth plot to be seeded this day.

After an hour or so of exertion he spied a rustling in the middle distance, a split second later it reached his ears. From the sound he immediately knew it was not the work of the wind. He thought of the others in his community close buy, often they traded specimens to be propagated, or livestock to be trained. He was viewed suspiciously by the rest, the male was not so elegant and slight of build; rip-chord muscles were barely concealed by his unusually pale flesh and his eyes bore an unearthly glow at night. He was told he was once a great warrior, once fighting for distant cousins astride the stars though ultimately choosing to forget his days of Honour and Glory. Some of that warrior spirit stirred within him as he considered the other possibilities entailed by the disturbance, perhaps it was a graceful Hind or a powerful Hwynnae to be tamed. The novelty of adventure and exploit gained the upper hand and he abandoned his plot for what would be the last time.....

Well if you just Scrolled through that here are some pictures, they aren't of the best quality but i just wanted to show i was progressing, albeit slowly.

One Blaster still to do and one of those cc guys is getting re assigned.

The first of my mostly finished warriors, i foolishly batched ten so had severe motivation probs with them, have still got to paint 8 splinter rifles and a darklance.

Just popped this in for a larf, found it in the folder and thought it looked pretty neato, if anyone has read my Guardsmen fiction this is probs what the Scions of Malignancy would look like.

The old man , sat enthralled as the young chronicler narrated his tale , " how is it possible ? this but mere boy , without the benificial years of wisdom , could conjure a story, so beguileing ?" The seasoned wordsmith's wonder was compounded by his ignorance , "what manner of man judges passion on age ?" , when true art is timeless...

good update , i see the "Deldar" have progressed some . they look very nice , they do deserve a nice photo though!

and nice touch showing the scions of malignancy .. red and bone eh..?

Thanks Neil and Kroothawk!

Okay fans of jes Goodwin, i did something terrible last night: I hacked into an incubi model! I winced as i sheared at it's arms with crude clippers but here is the result:

First before you click i want to explain myself. I think the incubi look a little dumb in pose, i took the matter up with a friend and we both agreed the way they are holding the 'Klaive' is impractical and not taking advantage of the strengths of the weapon. My friend is an highly advanced Tai Chi student and is experienced in several weapon forms, i decided to take some inspiration from this with the new pose i have chosen for the model. A few other points as well, i know currently the other arm is 1-2mm too short but i had just shoved it in to the blue tack, secondly i am assuming the shoulder pauldron articlates with the arm of the incubi as if it didn't he would be physically unable to swing it. Thirdly i see the klaive as some infinitely well balanced blade, perhaps utilising anti grav in the pommel, hence the one hand. I give you my elegant Tai chi Master Incubi. [BLUE TACK MOCKUP]

Spoiler:

this is my favourite pic, i love the way he is tilting his head to accommadate the blade, IMO adds alot of motion to the pose.

Post by: Viktor von Domm

seems i have not missed all too much^^ know that i´ve read through all of this thread i might as well shed some words from me ...

saw the first pic of your dark eldar...um thingies...jetbikes(?)
before i write further let me please explain a thing...:
i now next to nothing about the DE, and the things i do know brings me into a position to never play them myself...strangely the same reasons would aply to choas SM but i would try them...?!? well but this aside i am here only to chat about your art, as art is indeed not so heavy ladden with malice but more with beauty...and i see beuty here a lot^^

so back on topic and to your minis...you know get the full backlog treatment^^

i like the contrasting work you do...
the reaver jetbikes (?) look really good. though i understand in theory how you achieved certain effects i swear i wouldn´t be able to copy any of these techniques ever^^ the shading through layers looks very good, you worked with very nice colorvariants and have an eye for the colorsteps...
the mixzure of the bone part and the cucumber part is daring but very well pulled off...

your footsloggers of various design all have these nice shading effects on their armor, i greatly apreciate the female ones with the rather brighter raised parts like breasts and so forth^^ looks very god and shows how female they are^^

i like your idea to use a warhammer fantasy wizard for a stand in of a haem..(what?)... i have one sprue of some bits of these too and there are quite some DE looking heads there i see definatly some use for you...you should do more that way! great potential...
also i have this thought up while reading your blog here:
have you considered using a LOtR Sauron to go for a stand in mini for your DE? has this been done by others? i think some parts of his apearance would greatly fit the DE scheme...and i would love to see this mini in brighter colors...

i really like your go at the raider...this will be an astonishing model when completed...also i mused to myself that parts of this could be used for those interested to make a steamtank for fantasy...after all they quite to my knowledge the production of thsi tank...

one day i have to try a go at "bone" myself as your CSM looks really good, and i am all for effective looking with little effort^^

and lastly i see exactly what you tried to achive with your newest mini...the martial weapon arts in kung fu and wu shi do shine through this mini and its pose...for reference of the originla pose could you post a pic of this mini as it was original intended to be? this would help to better understand your dilemma and to finally your choice to hack this mini^^

again i have to say i have next to no knowledge about the DE but i also like your fiction... the fluff tho not understandable...as i lack the bigger picture know around^^ but nevertheless is a good read...and paints on the canvas of my mind a quite good and livid scene...

i will now be a regualr reader to this blog of yours...as this will surley broaden my horizon in no small way^^

cheers mate, vik

Post by: Perkustin

Thanks for the input Vik, the Sauron Idea is great! Am gonna take a closer look at that model now.

This is the original pose (there was another in the box). This is also the easiest of the incubi to convert

Spoiler:

In my opinion the diagonal of the blade combined with the sloping shoulders and lean of the legs makes him look over balanced almost as if he has been thrown the blade. Or is carrying it carefully at arms length like he doesnt want to break it. IMO looks dumb. EDIT this stance also has Zero combat effectiveness, where does he go from here? He could attempt a short sharp blow but this would have little power and the weight of the blade would be against him.

Like your Incubi conversion with the overhead sword , reminds me of the film kindom of heaven , when liam neeson teaches , his son the high stance.

Thats a cool film that, love the leper king, both with and without mask (love a bit of the 'what's under the mask' reveal fright lol). How do you think it compares to the original stance?

Perkustin's Dark Eldar [Odds and Ends] @ 2011/02/25 22:59:11

Post by: Viktor von Domm

the original mini is totaly meh to me^^ so you did a good job in sawing around^^ the stance i think resembled a defensive pose...whimpy to say the least...also the newer version: as i rember when doing woodcutting the amin thing is just heaving the axe and not the smashing... store the energy and then realse it freely and not push more into it, the weight of the blade does the cutting after all...so your pose is somewhat that storege of energy point in just before the relase...like a ball at its heigest point in a falling /tossing curve...(was that understandable?)

do it this would be so cool...and there are more mins of this chacter around with even bigger scale...so there are so many possible themes to use it for^^

Here's some more fluff. Pretty proud of this passage. The rebirth of Tendulker.

He had Fled her dusty throne chamber.... To escape her was all he had desired in that moment.....

The thick brush parted as he made his way through, no leaf fell and no branches were snapped. He entered a small clearing and came upon the source of the disturbance, Creeper-Weeds had claimed this spot. The slowly coiling branches shook as he approached, the vile plant sensed threat in the strongly built adult. The male spotted a slippered foot partially concealed by the seething mass, they withdrew as he approached. A youth with barely twenty years behind him was revealed, obviously having been caught by the plant. The boy held a small watering vessel in his left hand and his right had been cruelly gripped by the poisonous weed.

Something was strange about this encounter though, normally the weed would only attack in defence, such stings were rare amongst his people who all knew and respected the eccentricities of nature. Judging from the situation however, this had been unprovoked. The plant had went out of it's way to wound the boy, render him unconscious for the grim fate of digestion. Such an abhorrence could not be tolerated, this vicious mutation could not be allowed to proliferate. He looked to the blade of his plough ready to ensure this an evolutionary dead end.

The boy presented an obstacle to this, if he were still gripped during the weed's death throes it would flood him with poison, almost certainly sweeping his life away in the wake. The adult knelt before the boy gripping the weed where it constricted the adolescent wrist, it stung him to no avail 700 years, 1000 immunizations to it's venom. He looked to what gripped the boy; a gnarled perversion, a mockery of a fist in frond and function. It did not easily give, a sadistic defiance, something that seemed strangely reminiscent to the male.

He tugged at it, dug with his blade to purchase leverage. Frustration boiled over to anger, the heart of the adult beat faster; 3, 4 to 5 beats in a second. He let a smile etch his lips as unchained the beat continued 6, 7 and 8. He stabbed at the branch, yielding the reward of gushing vitreous foam. The boy was safe but no longer did the saviour know or care. The base pleasure of the kill a sudden prerogative, no an imperative; not merely to thrive but to survive. He snapped the once farm tool over his knee rending the spar into a pair of splinter sharp shards better to inflict his sudden rage.

Stabbing, cutting, sawing. If the semi sentient plant could feel pain it would be begging for its life. The eldar male felt the adrenalin coursing through his veins, he had broken the teachings and rules of his mentors on this world. Neurons flared incandescent as they coruscated down forbidden pathways, surging into the regions of his brain that had lain dormant all this time. Clarity reigned in the confusion of 10,000 memories. Tendulker recalled and in that instant renewed his old life.

So many worlds scourged, so much blood willingly spilled to abate oblivion. He had no place among these people any more.

So too did he remember the Dowager Empress, the terminus and culmination of his sin. Her stained lace, the beautiful countenance ravaged by consensual rape. Could he finally destroy her?

Will we see Hekatrices swinging their power cucumbers (AKA 'agonisers' ) around anytime soon?

Pleased to see you went with the "Perverse Fist" as the Kabal name in the end!

Look forward to seeing the Incubi painted! The Haemonculus has tons of character, and it's great how he's different from a 'typical' Haemy yet still totally convincing as one for such a simple mini'. It fits with that you were going for having the Perverse Fist as exiles based on an Exodite world (confirm?).

EDIT: I hope I haven't given the game away there, Perkustin. Please spare me from the power cucumber!

indeed. Hmm should really hit this up with a meaningful update, have been batch painting a bunch of arms, very dull. Those of you that have followed the blog or are familiar with the DE models will notice that's how i paint them; body first, arms second. So! Completed warrior squad up at 8.00/9.00pm gmt. Watch the skies.

@Unanything they aren't actually based on the exodite world but that will be made more clear in the final piece of fluff. Lets just say i have something pretty cool in mind for their base of operations. Oh btw Perverse fist is only the new name adopted by the kabal they were once called the Kabal of the Gilded Ejaculate.

@Vik It wasn't a trap in the traditional sense but who knows? Maybe She Who thirsts (Slaanesh) laid it out for the reformed Tendulker.

@Neil excellent wordplay there matey! Oh and if you were quoting A reggae song in your previous post i will have to confess my knowledge only goes as far as 'Pass the duchy on the left hand side'....

Ooooooh... I keep forgetting the exact details. Looking forward to reading the next part of your excellent fluff!

You should have a Trueborn squad that pay homage to their Kabal's old identity - same armour, but with glossy Bleached Bone/Skull White + Shining Gold stains. Or just armour with those colours.

Will be checking that update.

Raider 90% complete (the crew(s) are gonna be the ABSOLUTE last thing i paint in the army, just need to finish the Darklance)
And the warriors 94.78% complete just need to paint the bases and do some touch up work.
With the raiders sail i was attempting a sort of batique/tye dye kinda thing, relatively pleased with how it turned out. My Wych raider's Hull is currently covered in pencil scrawliings as i want it to look more gaudy than the functional warrior's ride. I really wasnt pleased with the warriors till i painted the little pendant things on the arms and the scrunchies red, really 'ties the room together'.....

Tah Dah! C+C Please...

EDIT: I love how on the left you can just see the face of the last warrior, he looks angry...

Nice! I really like the exaggerated "highlight" contrast effects. Looks kind of totemic or something, like Haida totem pole aesthetics. Very dramatic looking, with a great "pop."

Somehow...to me...the Dark Eldar don't seem to be the scrunchie type. Can you imagine a group of DE doing each others hair with scrunchies whilst going over the lastest gossip? Oh the obsenity of it all.

But I know what you mean Perkustin. Your work is just fabulous and that flag of your Raider is stunning. One of my favorite things I've seen so far. Keep coming with more updates please. ^_^

The red and the blue do make excellent spot colours, possibly because they're purer colours (less mixing, titing, shading) than the bone or the cucumber.

The sails are amazing! I love how the crazy totem patterns seem to justify/pull together the layerwork on the armour. What gave you the inspiration for it? It looks like those things Aborigines drew as accounts for their dreams. Is there some kind of story on each sail? The one cellotaped above the two Warriors looks like it could represent the Fall almost, or them running away from the Alpha Legion.

Post by: Perkustin

@Unanything. I intentionally drew the snake but i didnt realise until after that it looked like it was about to attack a rather nonchalant looking person. I think i will pretend i meant it to represent the fall as both have a spiral motif (there is a small one on the sellotaped side) which kinda looks like it is sucking everything in.
@Tinfoil Welcome to the 'Bolg' i like how you and unanything pointed out the totemic/aboriginal style. It wasnt necessarily intentional (apart from the sail) but i am glad my work resembles something artistic.
@Bunny even though they appear to have tiny Knives in them surely they are still scrunchies? Hmm but perhaps 'scrunchy' isnt very Dark eldary, i hereby rename them 'HAIR TORMENTORS'...
EDIT: Cheers Scrazz

Very bold, I think they will look awesome as an army all arrayed up!

The colours seem very unreal, which suits the Dark Eldar in a strange way.

And I think "Hair Tormentors" does sound far more scary then "Scrunchies"

am i totally wrong in the head when i think about sweets when looking at your minis?
something in the bone/brown and green/mint look makes my mouth water...sounds stupid? well i guess so too...^^
i think you did a really big kob in your paintwork here...a very 3D kind of look. (tried to avoid the use of the word "plastic" as this might get the wrong impressions..)
i think the red is a good way to give the bunch a bit of accentuation...something to focus on beside the general scheme...
seeing your sail i say very well done, but then i also have to ask you why do the scrounchies in red and then the sail in blue...dont get me wrong, all perfectly brilliantly painted just a thought why the extra color...for what use is the sial anyway? is this a working sail or rather a hightech thing...remember i know next to nothing here about their tech...

He Perkustin , what a great job , You have done these tiny minis proud , i still dont know how yu managed to pull together brown cream and green and blue but you did, the sail is rather aboriginal, which lends a timeless qulity to the piece, i absolutely love the rear green transition , on the back of the barge, looks like drying paint of different hues. nice touch. i cant help thinking that the centre of the barge is missing a bone pice to tye the front and back together maybe along the bottom of the sail , but then again that would probably throw soemthing else off ;-) can you actually place the models on bases inside the barge? if so i immagine thier helms would do the same job. and speaking about the models , its fair to say i like these even more than the barge , the blue is a great adition and really sets them apart from any basing you will be using, i really cant tell you how cool these minis look in 2d and i am a little jealous of your bold colour scheme , but also inspired. bet they look even better in the flesh , so to speak.

They do!

For those that might think that the sharper nature of directly seeing something as opposed to seeing an image of something might reveal the imperfections of the layerwork, it doesn't. Just makes the models more atmospheric.

I some times think that , my models look good in the flesh , ( from a distnace ;-))but when revealed up close in photos look pretty rubbish, i have often wondered if some of the more subtle colour schemes that look good on dakka , lose out in real life.

The raider kit comes with the option for 3 warriors hanging off the side, also the crew will eventually add some flavour. Funnily enough the raider is quite a small model it suffers somewhat from 'Rhino syndrome'. However judging from the artwork/concept dark eldar are fine to travel as long as there are a few places to hold on.

The raider could do with a tiny bit of red but i couldnt think of what to paint on the model. Part of the reason is i'm not great at detail work hence the lack of gemstones, which perhaps could have added a little red.

The models themselves sometimes look a little blobby under intense light but under normal conditions (especially natural light) they look quite pleasing.

Got my Tau Today, I must say the Devilfish is an astoundingly beautiful model, it looks fantastic. I will be using them as therapy miniatures incase i get annoyed with the deldar. I also bought myself some good quality brushes and a load of pots for my Custom mixes... Am tempted to pot all the highlight stages for the green as it is quite the chore mixing 'em...

I also have to repaint the Archon as unfortunately the varnish ruined his paint job (in hindsight i think i may have dropped him while it was drying).

So the count is: One raider (will be bone and burgundy tribal on the Prow, only the sail will be minty cucumber) One Ravager (perhaps like the raider but with alternating bone and green), 1 venoms (One conversion finished), the last five trueborn. And then that will be a finished 1000points.

Then i have ALOT of work for 1500 and 1850, annoyingly it means buying another raider. I wanted to say i had finished getting models until the talos and Voidraven are released but not so....

Personally, I would've though maybe a clothe strip wrapped around the hair several times and held in place with those knifey pin things. But 'Hair Tormentors' is beyond perfect for a name. I want a Hair Tormentor. o_O Perhaps we should mass produce them and sell them to all the Warhammer junkies out there...

Hi there just a mini update with a couple WIPs.

First of all a WIP of the final installment of the 'Dowager Empress' this tells of Tendulker's return to the 'Tantamount' and his Kabal. This is probably about a Quarter of it as i need to cover alot of ground with Tendulker's 'Arc' in this last Act....

His blade had hesitated, an inch from her skin, on the cusp of penetration. Next time he would not exercise celibacy, he would leave her wrecked and ragged, no more than meat.

Tendulker reclined dispassionately at the Helm of the small starship, shy of the controls he held a cruel blade in his limp hands. Bringing the Jagged edge close to his face he proceeded to run it gently against his lower lip and chin. His thin serpentine lip quivered with dull arousal as the power field kissed and blistered in return. The Ethnarch had given the ship, better to ensure the forsaken cousin banished. There had been not slither of guilt as he had watched the disappointment etch upon the ancient semi-crystalline face.

The delicate controls glowed an expected message, he stroked a finger across the dials, the screen still hummed gently from the previous tone, he had arrived. Ruined ships crested it like a halo of driftwood, the Tantamount; his home, his sophomore place of exile. Ships of a myriad were silhouetted against a nebulous backdrop; Mon'keigh, Rhesh, Barghesi and the elegant ships of his cousins. To his disgust Tendulker also spotted his own amongst the clutter, serrated prows of pain perfected. They had been frittered away by ineptitude. With barely a glimmer of effort he navigated the debris and made contact with the cradled city.

Stolen from Craftworld Eyryatiné 2000 years previously the 40 mile square Bio-dome pulsed with excruciating prolonged life. Here his Kabal still made their Nests. Naturally, he docked without qualm nor query, why destroy a house guest? If nothing else it would be impolite.

Okay, those of you who scrolled through that without reading .
Here's the second WIP, it is the three converted incubi (The fourth is 'Vanilla' as i didnt hate his pose). The Backhanded Grip was hellishly difficult to realise but luckily i left enough of an Anchor to pin it. The Middle guy is also a headache as the Model's waste is too narrow, i will most certainly be bulking it out. I am planning to fill in the missing handles as the 'tertiary' grip seems a bit silly to me; there's a reason no culture used any weapon resembling a Klingon warblade. I now need to begin the main assembly, will have to pin most the arms as i couldn't be bothered boring out the shoulder pads. Remember they are still to get there little Trophy rack things, so dont look quite as imposing as they should (the blobs of blue tack hardly help )

A general overview:

Spoiler:

Composed to look cool:

Spoiler:

Enjoy....

Wow, I can't believe I haven't seen this before. The sails on your raiders look amazing! And I may have to steal your colouring on your raiders (how you have the prow brown like that and the rest green, though I'd do different colours). I've been struggling to find a way to paint them in any kind of pattern that works.

I must say, your particular painting style is unique, and it works quite well.

Edit: Oh, and the backhand Incubi conversions look awesome.

i have to say i cant see the blades in action of these warriors... these meathooks must stay be getting cought whenever they try to use them... well as the rule of cool you win with sailing colors i am certain of this but with the reality of blades your chaps would be in deep trouble with the second slash to be happening...

the story is well written but for me there is a bit of a problem to discern when dream and reality change...maybe you could use italics for innermonolog and dreams? that way would help a lot as this sttory is far more clorful and enchanted than the recruits tale...

Since these take inspiration from Chinese sabre-fighting techniques I don't think they'd have a problem, especially since they are probably better with their blades than a Chinese ever was with a dao. The one with the blade over/behind his head could duck his head while he brings it round (probably how he got it there in the first place), or cut round in the opposite direction.

i was just refering to the hooked nature of the blades... if they were totally sleek and not with hooks then they would be the edge of coolness... well they are also cool with edges but without i see even myself slashing about....

the poses look for me very natural and full of motion...natural in all respect...

I get you Vik, though the hooks look cool. What annoys me is that the incubi have these dumb wrist blades that i think would constrict movement. Only a couple of them still have them now, as they have been replaced by unadorned plastic arms.

Hello! time for an update:

Firstly i did a little beastmastery (Animal husbandry) and can finally begin the proper sculpting. I didnt take any pics as basically the 'lil pooch looks similar to how he did before but with a bum and hind legs, plus a little filing here and there. Updates to come though as he is my Pet project (BOOM Feel the PUN-ishing force).

Secondly and with pics no less is a slight deviation from the Fiends of Commaragh. A tau firewarrior, being a compulsive scheme picker i have chosen the colours but need a little help. Though he looks nice, the rather lovely Space wolves grey and Fenris grey helped with this, he seems lacking i need something to make him 'POP' and basing ideas would be neat. Suggestions on a Postcard as usual.

More Dark Eldar soon i Promise!
Thanks for looking! Yes you too Naughty Lurkers!

Ps: The fact the lense looks good in the first pic is a joyful coincidence, i can't paint them to save my life.
EDIT: Not too difficult to guess which Sourcebook cover gave me the inspiration lol. All he needs is a rather angry Vostroyan hacking him a new windpipe!

I think a nice bright yellow or pink , or even red would help him "pop" shoulder pad knee pad or even helmet , but he looks like a snow camo guy and as such i dont reckon he needs another colour . , snow basing might look rather good , especially if ued with some nice tau archetecture . look forward to seeing your pet project pics matey.

I have always wanted to build a Dark Eldar army and one day prob will, seeing your work here has made me want to even more. I really don't know how you'd make him 'pop', now that I actually think about it. He really looks cool as it is. I think with your painting style "pop" has a different meaning, if any validity at all. Maybe you could add more highlighting to the brown (soft armour/garments?) between the grey plates?

Have been slowly working through this raider for my wyches. The red portion has come out nicely but the bone needs some refinements, i am attempting to blend it as we speak.

I have something else i have been working on regarding Dark eldar but i still need to type it up and scan the illustrations for the moment here is a Wip of the model i will be basing the fluff on. I will give you a hint, this guy is the medium sized variety....

Sorry for the bluriness its just the camera had trouble focusing on it, and i couldnt get the lighting how i wanted.

Finally i have a question... Does anyone know a good way of doing spinal cords (for the tail)? i was thinking or cutting sections from a headphone cable insulator sheath, threading them on the armature and sculpting on top. Anyone have any suggestions?

have you tried to look into zippers? my wife slavaged some for me.,..the structure is very spinalcord like...if possible look into a real old metal one... the even have elaborate hooks which could add plenty of detail and could look spooky as hell^^

the riader looks very tasty... somehow i have a feeling of food when i see that...That is meant as a compliment^^

that raider looks really nice , you do paint very well perky ,i wish i had your patience for blending mtay.i also notice some cool xbox games , feel free to add madarin to your friends list if you ever fancy some multyplayer stuff. although its mostly the boys who log on. as for the spine i used a iron man toy whip , but mybe beads would work?

BEADS! You are a genius!

You know those belgian sea shell chocolates? I think that is what the bone on the raider is closest to....

Such a strange color scheme. Yet, you pull it off perfectly. Maybe the best Dark Eldar look I've come across so far.

Keep it up!

I wasn't sure about your style from just seeing the bike (the colors seamed very segragated and didn't flow very well on larger surfaces) but after seeing the rest of the thread I really like this idea.

It works out really well on the smaller figures, the raider I'm not sure on but I still like it a lot.

If GW doesn't release a hom model soon I'm going to use your idea of the wizard from fantasy. yours is going to look really good when you put your style to it.

This guy does look good, the angle of the photo makes him look a bit rubbish.

not rubbish... and no need for humble pie... i think your new avatar is highly justified! looking tremendously good... next time tho i would suggest taking a pic in front of a less busy background^^

as i look again to your mini...one day a step by step would be really cool and helpful...

I'll do some step by step pics with the other four trueborn. The run down is:

Tamiya flat blue and flat green 50/50 is the basecoat for the green. I call it 'Perverse green'

Once the armour is basecoated i ink it with Quink fountain pen blue.

Then i do a first highlight of 75/25 'perverse green'/Space wolves grey (used to do it with white but i really like the cold blue tint of SWG)

A more precise highlight of 40/60 'perverse green'/SWG

Edging final highlight of SWG.

For the bone i start with bestial brown.

Then a wash of 50/50 badab black/delven mud. (Used to use windsor and newton 'chestnut brown' fountain pen ink but i have went off the gloss finish)

First highlight of 50/50 bestial brown/commando khaki.

More precise highlight of commando khaki

Edging final highlight of 50/50 commando khaki/white

how long does this process of painting after this scheme take? i really like your highlightening tehcnique...also it reads very step by step and even might be replicated but i´d be damned if i was good enough fot this...
also like the "perverse green" made me smile^^

and i only know half of the paints you´ve mentioned^^ the rest seems to be a mystery^^ where did you get that chestnut brown you used before? sound like a good thing to have despite the glossy finish...somehow i picture these paints/inks to be a bit more than 12ml in a bottle...

I couldnt say, will batch the last four trueborn and give a more detailed run-down.

Just got all my painted dudes out of the case and arranged them, got me really stoked to finish 'em.

Can't remember seeing the Raider on the previous page, looks great, and love the pose on the blaster warrior.

Can't wait for you to have a full force, will be a very intimidating sight en-masse I think

Finally got off my butt and bought some scourges. In my opinion they are the finest miniatures in all of christendom and have given me a hobby shot in right into the heart. Naturally i havent even assembled any but i have used a head and blaster arm for a rather tasty conversion. The body is one of the raider dangleberries, with a running wych leg (picked up a handfull on a bits site, been sitting on them for months). The gorget (which i am VERY happy with) is a hellion shoulder pad. The head is obviously a scourge one, now alot of people may say it is a girly helmet but i like my psychotic, hedonist, hyper lethal aliens with a touch of androgyny. The other hand is a raider tillerman bit, got three pairs in a raider spares ebay lot [SMUG FACE]. There is still a lot detail work to go, mainly a c'tan/shadow spectre 'structural loinclothe' to cover up his groin which is currently, forgive the vile pun, messier than a post-op transvestites. And to give him the 'air' he needs off his base. The loinclothe will be a long, bridal, affair as Tendulker thought it rude not to take a trophy from the Dowager empress.

Take this halo reach, your multiplayer cannot redeem a lucklustre story!

The pose is inspired by the statline funnily enough, with ws7, Bs7 and i7 you are gonna have some nifty moves and pull some wicked shapes. The artwork for the Archon bestiary entry also gets a nod as it depicts a dude jumping out a WWP in a suitably dramatic fashion.

I am also working on a, final, five man Trueborn squad to accompany him. The will be called the 'Spiteful tragediens', hopefully some fluff will pour out my think hole after i squeeze the old mind-grapes. They will utilise the running legs and the cool (but inexplicable, erm 4+ save?) bare armed blasters from the scourge kits.

JUST FOR FUN:

I must say after i Ms painted the blaster flare and the 'Head dust' it looks pretty rad. May have to do a proper PS job when both models are fully painted.

Cheers neil! Finally bought my sorceress but now i dont know what to do with her? Still enough time for Pimp my Sorceror?

Came up with an idea for the fluff in the interval, as they are 'tragediens' (it was a class in a rubbish videogame, he was like an actor). Perhaps they snuck into a rival archons court dressed as Harlequins and acted out a decidely lethal play?

Fluff sounds promising , like the whole harlequin thing . Pretty sure their is enough time left for you to join in the pimping shenanigans . I am thinking maybe you will do the Dowager empress ?

Just a quikie, the first member of the trueborn squad.

Although Dracite Pho'Mabraxes leads his cadre into battle, he took on only the minor role of the Corsair King in the tragedy of Archon Drusillex. Like the rest of the men involved he prefers his stage title to his nearly forgotten given name.

This is a fairly Vanilla conversion that no doubt you have seen a hundred times before. He represents a good sqaud leader though he will look great leading his sprinting comrades.

Perkustin's modelling tip no.1 When modelling squads always have your sergeant static, even if it is a dynamic squad, it gives a great sense of authority to the Figure.

Perkustin's modelling tip no.2 When modelling pointing models if you want your characer to look authoratative always point the head in the opposite direction, this gives the impression of an order being issued. Pointing the head in the same direction gives the impression of shock, which is why it looks great on cadian HW teams! Try and avoid pointing hands on 'moving' figures, pointing weapons however are ideal!

The rest are named:
Eldanesh: Would love a dire avenger helm for him.
Vaul: Tricky, not sure how to model 'the smith'.
Isha/Ynnead: probababy go for Ynnead and go for some skulls.
Khaine: An Incubi Helm for this guy.

Looking very nice, the various DE kits sure has made options nearly infinite. I don't feel like the blasterborn guy is giving an order though. I think it feels more like he says Oh Yeah Baby!

Just a few odds and ends. Bought these vypers Aaaaaggggesss ago and finally bodged them into something dark eldar-ey.

I was quite chuffed with my ingenuity here. The chain reel thing is from the talos kit. I envision the passenger strapping on and swinging around from the chains as the venom is in full flight.

This one is just a collection of bits stuck to a vyper. Looks pretty good though. The Reaver cowl instead of a windscreen is copied from somewhere/someone, just cant remember where. Trust me when i say it looks cool, makes the Vyper front look like some Giger-esque Goat skull.

Here's another Wip of the Archon. I have been challenging my Sculpting with his loinclothe. It needs smoothing in places, to cover over my 'brushstrokes' (clay shaper gouges if you must) will probably rub in some partially dissolved milliput to do this. The back isnt done and the second smaller pendant that will run down the back isnt done either.

Either way because clay shaper-worked GS is soo shiny it looks ghastly in Photographs. Here are some anyway.

Played my first game of 40k with the dark eldar. Got absolutely annhilated by Horde imperial guard. 12 grenade launchers, 9 mortars, 9 autocannons and 2 missile launchers made short work of my dudes. That and the fact i forgot to disembark the wyches for a charge.
