FOR THE NEW PEOPLE PLEAS READ THROUGH MOST OF THE THREAD STILL PLEASE ALL I HAVE DONE IS CHANGE THE THEME AND FLUFF
Hey dakka long time no thread! so as you may have seen in my title this is an IG army blog, and i cant take all the credit for the idea endtransmition with his blog http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/251332.page gave me alot of insperation.
so anyways to the meat of the projecti dont have a camra but here is i stetch of the basic minner
this guy is most likly to be a rank and file c&c welcom
Two things to consider. First, will your force be using Russes built on-world or will they be using standard pattern russes from a narby forgeworld? Secondly will the Russes be designed for surface warfare or will thy be modified for use in super-huge mining tunnels to defend the resources?
The easiest method would to be use standard Russ models counting them as elements of an off-world armoured regiment bing attached to your infantry for a while. The ahrdest method would be to modify something up to look like its an indigenous pattern tank for tunnel fighting with super-heavy front armour and potentially drills or dozer blades for getting through rubble.
You could convert a kind of heavy gun Termite (search warhammar 40K termite in Google pictures, the link I used doesn't want to work.). Also, I'd have a look at forge worlds siege regiment rules. They have rules for a unit called engineers which can take what is normally a piece of mining equipment.

hmm id have to say #2 sounds cooler

thiers no fun in 'easy' so ill con vert some supterrianian pattern russes

Have you asked endtransmission about that? Maybe he has some ideas for "subterranazing" vehicles...
I don't have much experience with vehicle conversions, but I think you should start with a Leman Russ hull, with additional appendages that could represent mining tools, searchlights, etc...
Normal tanks need buldozer blades to get through rubble. If you're trying to fight in a tunnel I can see some raised minimg drills being useful to help get you through holes that are a teeny bit smaller than they need to be
I would check out the FW Hades Breaching drill for inspiration and maybe the mining machines from Total Recall (seen here in wondrous Lego form)
Well, if you're good with green stuff, you could just start with a regular guard or officer body and go from there, gsing whatever you can't kitbash. Course, with my Creed-alike, I just went with Creed and gave him a different paint job. So, I dunno. Do whatever you feel is right?
As for the Ogryns, don't you think it would match the Recce Sentinel statlines better?
Regarding a mining Creed... I guess it'd be best to custom-build him, but his main ability is in leading men, so it's not easy to figure out.. His main visible feature is his armament, dual Hellpistol... That's you best bet!!!
Thanks man, yea i kn ow theyd be better sentinals but hey, as for minning creed, ima think he would be a kick ass minner cross with a badass mercenary who has twin modle 1847s!
edit: WOOT PAGE 2!
so yea found a cool creed, cut the fist make a robot arm, one more pistol and DONE!
so yea nuthing of a update today but hey realy, so i have news, i was going to show you guys my platoon comand squad today but i cant find the camra cable :(, so no pics today.
edit: Right anyone reading or do i pointlessly update?
so i wont realy give him a cigar cause my gs is going to his budies in terms of cigars, hes to badass for cigars! like everyone will get one, just not him XD
The Avatar walker is more akin to a Sentinel than an Ogryn if you think about it. The main reason being that Ogryns have a toughness stat and very little in the way of an armour save. This means that whatever you substitute in should be able to be able to soak up a bit more damage, but not actually affect the damage resistance (if that makes sense?) Your best bet is something open like the power-loader from Aliens.
As for the Russ, to make it suitable for use in tunnels I would start off by running them without sponsons as there aren't going to be too many opportunities to shoot sideways. In addition to this, you want to keep the height/width down as much as possible. To do this, I'd use the Chimera hull with the Vindicator shield and a predator turret. For my guys I decided that there wasn't really much of a need for Russes or field artillery in a mining colony so these are being requisitioned form other planets by the Inquisitor as they carry out their hunt across the sector.
right i have pretty much scraped the idea of the avatar walker for ogryns, manly im going a power loader/ big daddy combo
the russ, EHGRAUGH! she is a pain in the butt to convert
im thinking chimara hull but smaller turret than the predator, most likly scratch makining it from plasticard, also a a little drill thing on the bottom to count as a dosser blade
Ok guys i have some sentinals painted up, problem is i have pics but cant find the dam usb cord, so pics soon (hopefully)
And some appataising army progress
Curently i have built:
1 gaurdsman squad 2 comand squads (till i get one more one is a platoon one regemental) 2 scout sentenails (with auto canonons and hunter-killer missiles) Edtit: 1 heavy wepons squad (with mortars) and 1 valkarie! (with misiel pods and multilazer)
so i changed my mind on the orgrns not that the mech idea is bad or anything but the sheer amount of plasticard it took to make (no pics yet), i will have them purely like a bigdady suit piotled by a ogryn and boy i have a fleff dumb coming! tomar in my study class i will jot down some ideas (and call it english work cause im doing short stories right now!)
As he woke up in the midle of the night, Salgrad looked to the window of his room, thuderous roars of artillery and aircraft loud in the air. This was like nothing he had ever happen, a war here? On home soil? As shoked as he was, he needed to chek his gear (most importanly his auto gun). while looking he heard a scream to his left, a scream of a child. "HELP!" the voice shrekied, fear ripeled all through out its small voice. He grabed the gun, ready to face any xeno, heritic, or mutant that lay befor him. The door crashed down with a large SMASH as he barged through, yet he could not be prepared for this. A huge Xeno beast strode before him, a mighty sight, the beast must have been two heads taller than him before he filled full of lead. Now all that layed there was a headless, life less, carcas of a greenskin.
Oh I don't know. I think it could be made to look like an ore hauler with a nice big dozer blade on the front and a crane on the back, or by making the front into some sort of scoop for shovelling up ore and rock with some cutters mounted either side like a giant version of the Hades breaching drill.
Well, in olden times the Land Raider could submerge up to 37.5 meters. But, that is a cool tank. Maybe there are flooded sections of mine through which miners must navigate? Or the making of a hauler like that could work out pretty well too. I'll like to see what you make.
37.5 m is approx. (and by approx., I mean a quick calculation in my head going off 3 ft to 1 m, so very approx.) 112.5 ft. Don't ask me why GW decided on this depth, but at the same time there may be precedent. All I know is that's the exact depth stated in the Imperial Armour books. But I've always just kinda wondered- 'can a submerged land raider fire its weapons?' is my question. Nevertheless, I would still say a hauler with a couple of extra weapons quickly attached could easily work for some super heavy tank, like, say, a Malcador. Just my 5 cents.
a submerged anything can fire its weapons... whether they are effective any more is the question. Bullets will be slowed an awful lot more than normal (and the pressure wave may do bad things to any nearby divers), while most laser energy would be dissipated into boiling the surrounding water, to probably much the same effect...
hehe see i post a pic and people start talking!
anyways its going to be used as a russ, but its not going to be amphibious. instead its going to be drilling and shooting.
a mix of that supper heavy you showed Yggdrail and this thing, plowing plowing, like the hades drill. ya know realy, endtransmissition had it bang on in his post.
Well the pics are what makes the blogs! I think that vehicle would look great in you army. Have you thought of making a kind of train for transporting the ore? Maybe use that vehicle as a starting point for it.
just help and ideas, i recently came out of emotionall termoil and i kinda want this blog to stay, i must say its kinda my fault for no modle pics but im geting a cammra, hopefully ill calculate my curent armylist (its not playable mind you) so stay tuned
haha, nah i really like the idea, and would love to see what you have set up so far. any idea of an army list?
I would make it very blob army type with lots of average joe miners as the infantry platoons with some interesting drilling equipment to count as plasma guns, flamers, GL, etc. Then have some heavy duty armored vets with carapace armor for some of the miners who have to go deep into the earth and where special suits. Maybe some miner walkers, and some homemade tanks where the miners have strapped on all kind of explosives to create makeshift hydras, and griffons. I don't know, just ideas that flew into my mind. great idea thou!
anyway, on topic. I like the conversions and vechiles you have gong there. Marbo looks cool, but i would use the base to bring the miner theme in stronger. The catachin models look good as a miner type thng, but i think you need more miner like stuff on each character. such as shovels, pick-axes, mining helmets (maybe converted cadian helmets?), and other stuff. I would also like to see close ups of the single soldier models. Maybe a squad, as well as each member of the squad so we can see exactly what they look like and how you painted them!
pics are nice to see thou, and it looks like the army is shaping up!
Try cutting/filing the two ends of marbro's weapon flat (sit them on a desk to see if they're 'leaning' or not). Or really.. cut the whole part of the first weapon off and just give him a bolt pistol/bolt gun. Will add to the effect more
Alrighty then its not necro if the poster dose it, right?
any way these guys are back on thier feet again! yet this time insted of being minners these guys are now more based of the ISA from killzone as in killzone 2
Spoiler:
After scolar vizari dies the full Helgast fleet comes in (talk about bad rezerve rolls ) and the ISA fleet is All but obliterated and they have to fight thier way out to get home
and the fluff for my guys have been changed aproprietly to suit this. So yes well you might ask "where are the pics now mek?" coming soon my friend, soon. though that has been overused in this thread so much i have to say sadly its all i got
so yes coment a tell me on my new thread outlook peals and have a good day
@cain well their not egzactly like the ISA, just the concept of a army group stranded behind enimy lines
in a week or two ill be reciving twenety catachans from a friend who got back into the hobby and started BT's so ima make a Harker and Bastion vet squads!
The turret looks ok, but I think you need to practice your plasticard cutting skills... If you want to do large pieces you need a metal rule or cutting edge.
I am really digging those tanks! those are really sick!
I didn't mean offense with my previous comment, I am actually interested in this blog, just letting you know before cuz i notice my blogs don't always get commented on but it doesn't mean people aren't interested you know?
personally the treads on that truck seem a bit too small, i would try out those crappy plastic tanks you get with toy soldiers that are larger and try to get rid of the treads on those. and use them. I love the idea, maybe some other facets on the side? or bullet holes, you could do that pretty easily with a hobby knife. good stuff overall. would love to see it painted up!
Very original transport, probably more true-to-scale than a regular chimera by the looks of it! Sage is right about the size of the tracks, they look like they would be better suited to a scout vehicle (maybe a counts-as sentinel )

Ahaha Thanks sage! yea when i paint this feller that manly blank side will have some sick free hand! (note by my standards)
Quite a good number of soldiers you show in this last update. Now for some paint and you'll be in business. And I know all about the no feedback thing- I've soldiered through it in mine, but that's likely due in good part to not having any real updates yet on my end... still kinda getting the show on the road there...
What's the paint scheme you want to have? Is it dark green fatigues with a bunch of black mining filth on it?
As for you chimera, I think it's a cool idea to use a more modern sort of truck. With the troops compartment, I would look into some sort of measuring system to ensure that all the panels are squared at the corners and are the same size. Also, you can use the internet to find pictures of other vehicles to reference for scale when choosing wheels and what-not.
Can you provide a close-up of one of your painted troopers so that we can give you painting advice? That is, if you want it.
All in all, I like your work and your creativity. Keep it up.
