Hi there!
Army is finally complete after a bit of a hiatus, very happy with how its all come together
Thoughts?
I have been absent from the hobby for a long time, definitely out of practice with the brush, but with the release of the new Dark Eldar (Used to be a Craftworld Eldar guy, only because the old Dark Eldar models were pants) I got sucked back in. With the start of a new army, I thought why not stop lurking on Dakka and actually post!
Being a collector first and a gamer second I'm not entirely going for an optimised force. But it was hard to go past the new warriors! I might sit down and craft up an army list a bit later There will definitely be more warriors, and some Scourges as well (as soon as I can get ahold of some more Dark Lances and gargoyle wings). Not that big a fan of the new Raiders, so it might be a footslogging force. Undecided at this point! Will try my hand at making a custom Archon as well.
I've gone for a red scheme, with a splash of blue, I think its appropriately evil looking. Its interesting how some things come back to you, but I'm certainly rusty! C&C is welcome!

Some more building, hopefully this will get some interest
Archon with agoniser and blaster. I love the 'weighted flail' bit
Sucubus with agoniser and blaster, most of my agonisers will be sword types, but again can't go past the flail for my characters
Bloodbride Syren
Going to build the Bloodbrides next, and when the sun comes back get some primer down and get cracking on painting

I like them. Just started a Dark Eldar army myself. The colour scheme is rather fetching.
I would suggest hosting the pics on this website, makes it easier to view the pictures (I, for example, have trouble accessing photobucket).
Am following this

You've got some really nice poses on your Sybarite and Archon! The weighted flail looks great!

Ooo, didn't know I could host on Dakka, will look into that now!
Thanks guys!
<edit> Is that better?

Much better. Mind you, do you have access to image editing software, cropping the pictures to only those pieces you need will make the figures look bigger on Dakka and save viewers from having to click through to your gallery to get any idea of detail. Brightening them while you're there is a good idea too. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your background is actually white (or blue, or whatever it's supposed to be )
Also, if your camera has a higher exposure setting, you might want to bump it up a couple of pegs. That way you might not need to edit the brightness. And, obviously, make sure you're using Macro/Micro.
As for the models, I like them, though the blue looks a little bit chalky (needs a wash to tone down the highlighting) and the face definitely needs more defined shadows. The colour scheme itself looks really nice Good job.

I almost named my Dark Eldar the Kabal of the Blooded Hand. Thought it would make for good iconography

Quite hard to make out on your pics, looks a good start tho!

A bit of image wizardry and voila! That's really not bad actually. Love the eye detail. Loincloth is a tad dusty still. Very nice blue gem.

Very cool. my old DE were red but i changed that color scheme to black heart. These are the first red DE that i have seen and i think they look great
37247
Post by: Vanq
Thanks LadyCassandra, thats awesome of you to do! Will do a bit of playing around with my Photo-fu...what software did you use to edit the picture?
I think I need to get a hold of a brown wash for the loincloths (going for a skin texture as opposed to cloth) and some nice white paper to build a proper photobox I might continue to relearn techniques on the warriors before moving onto the characters hahah
Great minds and such infilTRAITOR
Thanks sum1thtdiesalot, I enjoy painting red, and I can't say I've seen any new ones in red either

Post by: LadyCassandra
I used Paintshop Pro to up the brightness, but mostly because my Microsoft Photo Editor was giving me problems . And Paint to crop it. Alas, Paint still doesn't have brightness/contrast functions. My partner, who has Photoshop, keeps mocking me about Paintshop Pro so don't be surprised if you've never heard of it . GIMP would work too I guess?
To stop portrait images from becoming HUGE by the way, change the size to small before you copy the forum link as it only goes on the width.

Excellent depth on the red. Did you wash with Mud...or?
37247
Post by: Vanq
I think I will have a play a bit later, thanks LadyCassandra!
AgeOfEgos: Thanks mate! The red is black undercoat, followed by watered down scab red. Its not a thick covering so the undercoat comes through a little. Followed by red gore in a wide band along the edges of the armour plates (starts actually looking red at this point), with a highlight of blood red along the extreme edges. Then ran black ink down the 'gaps' in the armour. No washes or anything like that.
It looks nice in the flesh, LC's photoshop is pretty much bang on what they actually look like. Hopefully I'll take some better pictures soon

Better. The blue on that sword came out really nice. Cant wait to see the archon all painted up.

Looks like it's coming along nicely. I like how the red is turning out.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Thanks! I'm learning more about the camera as well as I go!
WIP of my Succubus...still not happy with the face But I love the pose...still a lot of work left though! I might leave the archon until I finish my Warriors and Bloodbrides, so I can make him as good as I can manage
37247
Post by: Vanq
Nearly there! Need to go over the face again it seems, looks like my Succubus has 5 o'clock shadow
31470
Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
Did you use howling banshee legs for the succubus? They look good but I can't figure out what they are
37247
Post by: Vanq
Yep, Howling Banshee legs, but not the current ones. Was donated by a 3rd ed Banshee
37247
Post by: Vanq
Scourge, made from Wych legs, Warrior torso and head, Gargoyle wings, Daemonette Seeker feet. Saw it done by someone over in Warseer, thought it looked really cool. Very alien and obviously 'enchanced' compared to the regular Kabalites. Going to form a small sniper squad of Dark Lances, mainly because I love the 'sniper rifle' appearance, but also because Heat Lances are hard to get ahold of.

Thanks! Very happy with the red, halfway through batching some bloodbrides when the bits arrived for the Scourges, lol, distractions. Better shot of all 5 Scourges, ready for priming!

Post by: Foxtale
Very nice Scourges. They have really dynamic poses. They all have really long legs, which looks fitting somehow. The only one it doesn't quite look right on is the one pinned off the ground.
They're gonna look excellent though! How are you planning on painting the wings?
31470
Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
Those are really really cool. Cant wait to see them with arms. I agree with Foxtale that the long legs are fitting, especially since they look like birdmen in the codex. But I also agree with Foxtale that the one that is pinned off the ground looks a bit off. I just don't know why...
24409
Post by: Matt.Kingsley
I have to agree with foxtale and sum1, the pinned one does look out of place
20499
Post by: Foxtale
I think it's just that the legs look really long when they're extended straight out. Chopping them closer to the kabalite knee or the seeker foot might fix it.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Wings are going to be skin/bone coloured I think, or blue to tie in with everyone else.
The one off the ground is going to be one of the Dark Lance guys, I'll take another shot and a different angle, but basically with gun she looks like she has just lifted off backwards after firing the weapon. The far left one is the other Dark Lance user, being pushed back by the 'recoil'
Interestingly enough, the one that you have commented on is the only one that uses warrior legs instead of wych ones, I guess the wych ones lend themselves to this more, but I ran out!
Once the arms are on the poses are going to look much better. They look suitably majestic compared to the regular guys, as befits their wealth and status
There was a break in the weather so they are primed now...I will paint them one at a time I think, so expect to see a Dark Lance first
Edit: Whoops, more replies: I deliberately wanted to make the legs long and 'avian' looking with a touch of 'not quite right' rather than just winged warriors. I was just thinking it might be the wings that are throwing the pose a little. If they were angled down a bit it might enhance the idea that the Scourge is lifting off/coming into land as opposed to 'moving' like the others. Might have a play.

Post by: ThePhish
Very nice scourge conversion. I'm working on some as well, although I wasn't going to go as far as the feet. Would you mind getting a picture of the scourges from the back. I would like to see how you attached the wings. Not sure what it's called, but I'm considering cutting/drilling a hole through the upper back/shoulder area in the raised area of the warrior to mount the wings. Is that what you did? Thanks in advance.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Hi Phish!
I used a bit greenstuff and attached the wings to the rear 'vents' on the back of the warrior, to try and creat the impression of wings that have been put through holes in the armour.
21932
Post by: ThePhish
Thank you for the pic. That helps a lot. Did you have to trim the vents at all or just fill in the gaps and over the vents with green stuff?
I haven't done any modeling with green stuff. Does it dry strong enough to hold the wings? No glue or anything else required?
34348
Post by: Tmonster
I like the scourges, might steal that idea if you don't mind.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Phish: I superglued them first, then greenstuffed over the join/vents. No trimming as I wanted a bit of bulk there. Greenstuff won't actually hold anything together on its own.
Tmonster: Feel free

Although the strongest bond I've ever found with models has been superglue-greenstuff-superglue. Something to do with the greenstuff adding ridges for the thing to bond to.
Can't wait to see them painted.

Scourge! Really happy with how well its come out. When the squad is finished it will definitely be a centre piece.
Also, based the rest of my completed Dark Eldar...
Sybrite:
Blaster:
Splinter Cannon:
Warriors:
Succubus:
Next? Probably finish my Bloodbride squad, then either the rest of the Scourges or the Archon. Also need to build out the rest of the Warrior squad.

Cheers guys! I am really happy with them so far. Now to get some numbers happening.
Newt-Of-Death: That may be true from a pure gaming perspective, but I enjoy building and painting first. Don't like gaming at the GW so that limits my options. And I'm certainly not going to be making it to a tournament anytime soon
And anyway, thats why they have Dark Lances, so I can hide them in a corner somewhere safe and just let them take pot shots

Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
Scourges look sweet! Keep up the good work! They should actually bE really good for line of sight as the are nice an tall so they can see farther and over things. I was wondering why they had dark lances. That's how I used to play them when you coul take 4 heavy weapons in a squad. One of my favorite units. So what's next? I would like to see some red jetbikes or hellions personally. *hint hint*

Heheh, cheers mate. About to fire the BBQ up for Australia Day, but after that I want to knock of the Wyches and the rest of the Scourges before moving onto anything new.

Dont worry wings dont count for TLOS, you have to be able to draw LOS on a leg, arm, torso or head.

Nearly finished the first of the Bloodbrides, the rest are batched up behind so I'll have a full squad in no time!
I'm never painting Wyches again....so much skin
20499
Post by: Foxtale
Haha, the skin didn't bother me so much. It was all the little tubes everywhere that annoyed me.
That gem looks really nicely painted. The tubes could use some highlighting. Also, the eyes are really nicely done.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Oh, don't remind me about the tubes...
Yeah, still got some more highlighting to do, then base. Hope to get through a few more tomorrow.
I'll have a legal army in no time

Stealing your scourge ideas, except that instead of the seeker legs, I'll just grab the feet from the regular daemonettes. Seeker bits are just a little too hard to get ahold of at the moment and most auctions are for mount + rider and not just the rider. I think I'll use daemonette heads, too. As for heat lances, I'm getting extra Reaver ones and kit-bashing them with kabalite dark lances.

For Trueborn, has anyone found the Reaver helmets for separate purchase? Don't want to have to buy 2 boxes of Reavers for the helmets. My Reavers are going helmet-less for the look...but the car wants money at the moment too
Going to practice my eye-painting...

Yeah, I'm really happy with the pose, I can just picture him swooping down ready to hose down a bunch of mon-keigh with his Shard-carbine
The wings are just regal blue streaked with a light coat of ice blue, I just love how it comes out...I can imagine them being something fancy like aether-sail instead of leathery skin or something equally mundane

Hahaha, well, if I was a rich Dark Eldar, (who had just spent a considerable amount on a fancy body and a set of armour) I'd rather hide in a building with a sniper rifle on steroids then land behind a tank with a heat lance
Plus, heat lances don't look as cool
Archon and Trueborn coming up! Thanks everyone!
19787
Post by: Newt-Of-Death
Yes! Archon and trueborn.
Speaking of what looks nice, Id love some real heatlances. When I get my army more sorted out I may browse the web for some spare bits and bobs. Dont think Id want to buy multiple reaver box sets yet, and Id take heatlances with them anyway.
Hiding in a building on drugs sounds great! But with my luck with Dark weapons, the 2d6 is always the best option.

Post by: Vanq
Well the Archon is ready, and I have some fluff bouncing around in my head that wants to escape Basically my Archon was recently a mere Dracon when he came into possesion of a unique sword. He wrest control of the Kabal from its former master in a bloody coup. As an adherent to the Khaine of old, he prefers to get stuck in, confidant of his skills. Hopefully thats conveyed in the mini
His Trueborn will have to wait a touch, need to shift back into building mode.
But, pics of the Archon...just need a name now

For your considerations
Novice-Lhamaean Iadanna watched the unfolding drama in the shadow of her mistress K’shaic. They were standing in the main hall of Archon Murehk, Lord of the Bloodied Sword, master of his house for millennia. The ancient Archon was visibly enraged as he received the report from the Solarite messenger.
“Mistress, what concerns our lord so?” the younger of the two Shaimesh cultists asked of the elder; “Is it news from Dracon Tokath?"
The commander of Lord Murehk’s trueborn bodyguard, had taken the majority of the Kabal’s warriors on an extended realspace raid less than a week ago…without his master’s leave to do so.
“Of course it is about that damned upstart. He finds a sword and suddenly believes he is Khaine incarnate. On top of his association with those Wyches of the Cold Hand…”
“Succubus Shenestra? Rumour has it that they are lovers.”
“Lovers? Child, she is old enough to be his mother…though that would be a delicious twist”
“What could it be, has the raid failed?”
The Archon slumped into his throne as the Solarite walked towards the pair. Iadanna was able to truly appreciate the difference in height that the scourge’s modifications had provided. His hooked talons made a soft clatter on the stone floor with each footfall while his skeletal aetherwings were tucked behind the expensive ghostplate he wore. The mercenary warrior was an intimidating sight to say the least.
“Courtesan, you would do well to comfort your master” purred the scourge, a touch of disdain in his voice.
“What news did you bring to upset him so Harakht? Did your price rise again?” If the barb struck home, the helmeted scourge did not show it.
“The fleet has returned, with a great many new slaves and other playthings.”
“Then why…?” Iadanna was cut off by Harakht’s harsh laugh.
“Almost all of the Archon’s most….trusted…trueborn were killed. Unrecoverably so. Best not dawdle whore, your master is running out of friends.”
K’shaic gave a dismissive snort as she made her way towards Murehk. Before Iadanna could follow the Solarite’s taloned hand clasped around her forearm.
“Not you…one as young as yourself has so much potential. Stay with me for awhile”
Iadanna was unable to voice her protest before her life changed forever in one dramatic instant. Murehk was surrounded by his closest advisors when the doors to the hall burst open. Harakht turned, pulling the smaller novice behind his bulk, a low chuckle coming from under his helm. There was barely a moment to register the intrusion before the air screamed in protest. Multiple darklight weapons lashed out, tearing through Murehk’s advisors. Iadanna watched as her mistress fell, half her torso missing from a glancing hit, the shock on her face evident. Murehk barely had time to raise his personal field before a blast reduced his dais to slag.
The intruders wore the expressionless helms of the Kabal’s trueborn, though their armour was painted blood red instead of the traditional dark blue. The weapons in their hands cycled after their opening barrage. As the Archon’s own mercenary bodyguard moved to counter attack, birdlike Kroot known for their strength and agility, another surprise burst from the trueborn’s ranks.
Iadanna recognized Succubus Shenestra in an instant. Somersaulting above the armoured trueborn, she was a stark contrast in a skintight suit so favoured by the gladiatorial champions. Swinging her powered flail in one long arc, the Kroot fell before her. Barely a heartbeat after their entry, the hall fell silent. Murehk stood, drawing a vicious blade as his powershield flickered and died.
It was then that Tokath entered. He strode with the confidence of a practiced warrior. His immaculate ghostplate was marred only by the fact that the armour of his sword arm was torn away. The muscles of that arm strained as if wanting to escape, to tear themselves away from crystal blade he grasped. Enclosed in his warhelm his voice was distorted and metallic.
“Your time is over. This Kabal is weak. It was but a matter of time before it fell prey to those who desire its wealth. I have purged it of its weakness. Only one cancer remains.”
“You do not have what it takes to survive Commorragh, curl. And you will not find me such easy prey!”
Murehk lept forward and Tokath met him. Iadanna could hardly keep track as the two warriors dueled. The outcome was obvious even to her. Murehk was a master with the blade, but fresh from the slaughter Tokath was simply leagues above. His crystal blade moved with a life of its own, piercing the Archon’s defences before slamming through Murehk’s chest. The blade roared, the sound tore through Iadanna’s soul. Before her eyes Murehk was stripped of his spirit, sucked into the blade with the greed of a suckling food-beast. The desiccated corpse collapsed at Tokath’s feet.
“Well my young Lhamaean…I believe we have a new employer” chortled Harakht.
Does he fit now?

Ok, planning out this Trueborn unit, I'm tempted to go two ways:
Blaster Squad - 4x Blasters and Blast Pistol Dracon
Dakka Squad - 2x Cannons, 2x Carbines, Blast Pistol Dracon
Thoughts? Riding in a Venom either way...I'm leaning towards dakka just so I've got a dedicated anti-horde squad and I love the idea of trigger happy Trueborn

Looks great! As for the winter bases I think it would look good. Cept then you have to rebase everything that is already done. But if you are up for that I say go for it!

Post by: Vanq
Still painting, should have some more soon. Also go a bit creative with some Incubi...I think this won't be confused for anything else!
31470
Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
Definitly wont be confused with anything else. Never thought of making plastic incubi. Cant wait to see what you do for a klaivex

Only thing I'm stuck on is the demi-klavies...but that will have to wait for my Maelstrom order to come in, I'm running out of bits!

Looking forward to seeing this Incubus painted up. Will you be using the same color scheme for him or will you alter it slightly to make them stand out?
33033
Post by: kenshin620
Yup, that looks like a clear Incubi to me. Cool job on him!
31470
Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
For Demi klaives I have seen people give the klaivex 2 powerswords. 1 in each hand. It looks pretty cool but I think you could do something waaaaay cooler

Post by: Foxtale
I've seen the glaive blades cut off and used like daggers. That conversion looked cool.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Using the glaives cut in half would probably work, also apparent that they could be combined together to form a larger blade...hmm
whatisntart, I'll probably use a bit more white in them...I really like how it looked on the Reavers, so I'm thinking of using white marking to separate the squads.
Incubi won't be painted for a little bit yet, but here are some more WIPs!

I love your plastic incubi. In my personal opinion, you need trophy racks.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Yeah, part of my Maelstrom will give me the bits to give the more of the squad the back banner "racks"...but I might still have to go to ebay for more. It really is those twin blades that say "Incubi" to me.
Thanks DaemonJellybaby!

Thanks guys! The Incubi are staring at me wanting to be painted, but I need to get some regulars done first!
I have 20 warriors in various stages of the batch, so I've nearly finished three of them, which should be followed by the rest of their squad over the week!
Warrior Sybrite with an attempt at a freehand "hand" on the right breast:
Warrior with kitbashed blaster...shredder with a reaver blaster tip:
Finally just a boring Dark Lance dude
Will have to do the rest of the rifle toters next...I plan on using the white marking to separate squads...ie; markings on left side/right side
Oh and I've submitted my Incubi to the Miniature of the Month comp - WIP, so I'll see how I go!

That demi klaive guy is looking pretty awesome. I couldn't think of a good way to represent them on my incubi so I'm going with, "the demi klaive is just modeled as being put together!"
As far as your handprints go, they look like they are coming along. You should google image "handprint" for some ideas on how to form it. I think what yours may be missing is a wider palm part that the fingers connect too.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Thanks whatisntart! I will post up my latest efforts, they are getting much more "hand" like
Good news is that my order arrived! Previously I thought the Wraithlord kit was the best kit GW had ever put out, I really enjoyed building my three.
Then I got my hands on the Talos kit...oh boy, it doesn't fit at all in my overall army...but its such a sexy/creepy kit! I'm having a ball putting it together, definitely going to take my time painting this bad boy!
Reinforcements!

The spinal-cord tentacles are probably one of my favourite design aesthetics in the new DE range...its just so creepy to imagine a Talos pulling its way across a battle field with prehensile skeletal tails
Thanks Hazard, I should have more WIP pics tonight...I'm sort of happy with the leg choice, need other opinions

Nice venom! Those underslung cannons make the model look really slick and, I agree, much more jetfighter -y. Maybe we'll see an all venom and razorwing army? Those chains on each cannon are pretty cool, so no I may be stealing from you
The freehand on the side looks good, but you may want to connect or overlap each symbol. Right now it looks like four things next to eachother, rather than one continuous design.
The talos really is an awesome model, I will need to get one of those once I clear off my desk a bit more.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Hmm, I'm definitly asking for a Razorwing for my Birthday But there will be a few Raider chassis present.
Yeah, I'm going to be a bit brave with the Venom and increase the pattern, I'm thinking of using ice blue and shadow grey to add a bit more depth to it as well...I'll see how I go!

Post by: whatisntart
That Talos looks awesome. I feel like the DE miniatures are getting better with every release (minus the beastmaster junk).
The contrast on the red armor and bone colored skin really make the model pop. The freehand runes / symbols on the side are looking much better too! This guy will be a great centerpiece when you display the army.
Looking forward to seeing that second Venom painted up. I'm liking the dynamic pose and the side mounted cannons.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Thanks guys, I'm very proud of the Talos
Plan for the rest of the army thus far, just waiting on a final bits order to come in:
1x Venom (3x Total)
4x Blasterborn
5x Scourges (With either Heatlance/Splinter Cannon)
10x Warriors (30x total)
2x Raiders
1x Ravager
1x Razorwing
Also re-jigging my Wych/Bloodbride squad. In order to tell the two apart, I'm now made the Bloodbride squad 100% female (will post a pic on the kitbashes tonight) and the Wych squad is going to be 100% male, lead by a female Hexatrix (seemed appropriate )
Probably going to do a bit of building over the next week, to take a break from painting, then swing back around. I really want to get the Incubi done
31470
Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
The talos came out great. I'm looking forward to seeing a razorwing. Also for the scourges dont put a a splinter cannon on them. Its a terrible option. Go for those heat lances and haywire blasters!

I really like your plastic Incubi conversions, especially the Klaviex! He looks ready to scissor someone in half with those twin blades.
Good call on including the tentacles on the Talos. Much more menacing than the stock model. The white face plate is a nice accent to the red scheme, in my mind it oddly recalls a surgeon's mask. I'd be tempted to put a small blood splatter across it!
The under-slung cannons on the Venom streamline its look a lot. A bunch of these with Razorwings or Voidravens would be pretty cool.
Thanks for the comments on my stuff, thought I'd return the favor!

I really should sit down and paint the Incubi, they are sitting on the desk undercoated and looking menacing :( I've been inspired by a lot of really good Dark Eldar painter, yourself included, so I'm going to try my best with them

I have some WIP for you all, starting with my test of Army Painter's Dragon Red spray. I though this might save me some time but its not quite dark enough, even when sprayed on a black under coat with a wash. It does serve as a good red base coat though, which should speed things up a bit!
I can just imagine the Succubus complaining to the Archon as to how he expects her girls to travel to battle in a different shade of red Raider

Hmmm not so sold on the blue helmets for your incubi. Somehow, black seems to fit better. Or white, like how you've done your Talos. I really like the pattern you have going on the side of the Raider!
37247
Post by: Vanq
I thought the same, and tried white shortly after that photo, seemed off. I think what I will try is white helm/white shoulder pads as a test and see if that balances out.
Ditto for the weapons, not sure I like blue for them, but can't think of anything else that would fit...thoughts everyone?

Really like the freehand on ur raiders. Definitely original.
37247
Post by: Vanq
Its not looking too bad thats for sure. I'd like to take credit for freehand, but a lot of the influence comes from InventionThirteens awesome work
The problem is I'm using the marking to differentiate squads, so left side markings = left side squad...means the other side is a little bare. I'm going to do something with the sails I think, or add a hanger on to the other side?
Anyway, not much else got done today, except for 6 hours in my crappy work van and a successful trip to Ikea
Two new display cabinets yay! One side will be for my Cult/Merc units, the other for Kabal units
Oh, and weighing the whole lot down:

31470
Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
Nice work once again. The venoms look awesome and I love the way you painted the incubi's power weapons. The white helmets look cool. however the klaivex's helmet pink?
37247
Post by: Vanq
Nope, its white. Been so long since I've taken a miniature photo I think I got the balance wrong
Very pleased with the power weapons...also tempted to add white shoulder pads for the Incubi as well...too much white you think?
43229
Post by: Ovion
I'd be tempted to say white shoulders + chestplates, maybe the knees and/or edging of the plate to give better definition and to break up the red somewhat.
20499
Post by: Foxtale
A couple of things to say...
Those incubi look great. I particularly like the use of the brown. It mellows out the red a lot. You might want to repaint the pink helmet of the klaivex though. That looks weird.
Your razorwing looks EXCELLENT so far. The airbrushing (well, spray painting) looks great. And the green is very striking. I'm just sad you painted over the canopy.
I'm really impressed with the base as well. The use of the tree really fills up the base and ties it into your army instead of having it just hovering above.
9594
Post by: RiTides
Foxtale, he pointed out above that the "pink" helmet is just the way it came out in the photo / color balance... it's white.
I love the incubi thus far! Looking forward to more
37247
Post by: Vanq
Yeah, I don't know what it is about the Klaviex's helmet that the camera is picking up on...in the flesh its as white as all the others
I'm having a lot of fun with the Razorwing (just waiting on some magnets to arrive from Back2Basics)...in regards to the canopy I made the decision to paint them way back at the start (hence the venoms) so it was pretty much a done deal before I started the jet
Thanks guys, going to go home from work early this arvo and paint some more

Awesome stuff my fellow dark eldar-er. The talos is beautiful. And the plastic incubi are great, I love how you used the hydra gauntlet arms on the klaivex, very unique! Looks like a pretty good start! I've got some pointers for ya tho
- Unfortunately, the klaivex and the demiklaives are not really worth it. I completely understand if you want to put your badass klaivex model on the tabletop, but in a competitive list, its not worth the 30pts for the upgrades
- If your archon is going to ride with the incubi, give him a phantasm grenade launcher. Incubi definitely need the assault grenades, cause if they charge models in cover without them, they're gonna get chopped up before they even attack. I've seen lists with Incubi that take an archon almost purely because he can give the incubi grenades.
- I really like how you have nightshields on everything, I've only recently realized how great this upgrade is (especially against grey knights and necrons), and I've started including them in my lists. But you need to have flickerfields on your wych raiders, and if you can only afford one, take the flickerfields over the nightshields. That being said, I think nightshields are most effective when every vehicle has them. But flickerfields are kind of a must, especially for a full wych squad.
- The warriors are a decent choice, but if you're going to run them without a transport, no need to take the blaster. I would recommend this choice instead; 125pts for 5 warriors with a blaster in a Venom with dual splinter cannons. For an additional 15 points, give it night shields and grisly totems. The mobile blaster will be just as effective as the stationary dark lance, and you add 12 long range poison shots, plus an additional vehicle to saturate your opponent's target priority.
- If you want some extra points, I think you can afford to drop a couple wyches from each squad. Dropping 2 wyches (and 1 shardnet) won't significantly decrease their potential, and it will save you 30 points per squad.
So hope that helps a little. If you haven't already realized, dark eldar is a very, very difficult codex. I've only played about ~20 games with it, and I've learned a lot, but the #1 thing I've learned is that I have a lot more to learn! Practice makes perfect. Good luck sir!

I just noticed how you put your venom splinter cannons on the wings, that is awesome! I hate the venom gunner model, I tried fixing it by replacing the stiff legs with bent warrior legs, but it still looks ugly, and I think I'm gonna rip off my venom gunners and steal your idea Did you just trim down the turret SC to match the under-slung SC?
37247
Post by: Vanq
Thanks wildboar! I'll try to have more pics up tonight
Oneironaut...for the Venom guns, the Archon's ride uses 2 of the normal underslung cannons. For the Trueborn Venoms, I've use the cannons you get from the Talos.
I agree, they look a ton better...the second gun just ruins the lines imho.

The trueborn are looking really nice, and the razorwing is seeeexy The green on the intakes is especially nice, though I feel that a litte more green elsewhere wouldn't hurt. How do you go about shading the plates on the vehicles?

Post by: Archonate
prime12357 wrote:The green on the intakes is especially nice, though I feel that a litte more green elsewhere wouldn't hurt.
I disagree. Green + red = Christmas. I don't suppose the Bloody Hand Kabal wants to be mistaken for jolly Christmas elves. Might as well suggest some lovely white fuzzy trim along with it.
IMO the red with black detail is great. Maybe put a good highlight and shine to the red... But since this is a WIP, that might be the plan anyway!
35352
Post by: prime12357
Eh, I guess it needs to be expressed more or not at all. The little that's there is too much for a simple accent, but not enough to be a spot color. Either way, the color by itself is nice
37247
Post by: Vanq
Thanks guys! The green intake ties in with the Reavers and the little bits of green on all in infantry...not a major colour but just a splash.
Razorwing is going to get a nice white pattern on its left side, and its final details. The shading is down with a black basecoat, followed by spraying red paint from the front...poor mans airbrushing basically

Welcome back! I was wondering what happened to you! I assumed you had just moved over to the Dark City forums. But it's good to hear that you've sorted stuff out and are back to P&M! The Trueborn look badass perched on the scenery like that. The Razorwing is looking great, to me the shading makes it look like it's de-cloaking its Nightshields to attack. Having two sails on Raiders makes fills out their silhouette nicely, I wish Forgeworld would release an upgrade kit with alternate sails (or not since I'd have to change some of mine!)
37247
Post by: Vanq
Yes, its been a bit of a haul, but free time is back! Hooray!
Thanks mate, I agree about the sails...plus its easy to count-as Enhanced Aethersails now
House mate has gone and bought a Realm of Battle board, so its looking like I'll rebase to match the planned scheme...good chance to buy some awesome resin bases and do a better job on them!

Post by: Vanq
So, got some goodies from a mob in Melbourne called Milsims...not as great as it was from the UK, but when a battleforce is $155 at GW and an indie can do it for $124...well its an obvious choice!
So lots of building in my future
Co-worker of mine also asked me a while ago that because I paint up 40k, if I would mind doing a unit for him, probably an IG tank. I said sure, give me materials, the model and a bit of cash and its a deal.
Of course, I wasn't expecting a Baneblade to end up on my desk...so for something completely different, here is Ironborn!
I'm so pleased with how its coming together that I I'm tempted to refund his money and keep it hahaha

Here's an idea, try using one of the Pallid Handmaidens from the Coven Throne as the base for a Lahmean. From your description in the fluff of Iradanna (or whatever she was called) she sounds like she should have a very innocent look about her.

Oh, I pity you. So...Many...Bases...
As for the Duke, you could get away with minimal conversion to the Handmaiden by having him carrying her off in his arms, so as to get away from the problem of what to do with the dress. Impractical from a combat perspective, I know, but still.
Then again, I do love the younger Pallid Handmaiden. She's so cute!

I really enjoyed looking at this thread. It would seem you and I have had similar tastes with our DE. I think our stuff would flow well together on the table. Too bad we could never team up.
I love you Klavex/ Incubi work, (Despite the Pink Helmet).
If you find you no longer wish to field a Klave as it was suggested, I think your early interpretation of him was perfect for use as a Drahzar model. Just a thought.

I love this blog, it's awesome - your conversions are wicked and original, and your paint scheme is simple, effective and eye catching.
Looking forward to seeing more

Thanks for the kind words guys, will keep me going as I sand all these bases
After I get a run on the rebasing, I'll be building my new Duke, Splinter-born and Hammies...here is my new 2k list...thoughts? (for the record, my housemate who will be on the receiving end of this is playing vanilla marines with 60 warm bodies on the field and fairly limited vehicle forces)

First ten bases... (for the record, sanding 190 bases in one hit is not recommended!)

Cool bases, and I would NOT want to face that list
I've not run reavers myself and can only go on what I've heard, but would you not have more damage output from either scourges with a haywire / heat lance and carbines or another splinter born squad?
Although I suppose they're only 10 points less with both special weapons and I guess the reavers are more resilient and can cover more ground

Post by: Vanq
Yeah, I wanted to keep the Reavers because for some reason my housemate is incredibly frightened of them
I left the heatlance in because I couldn't find enough points to get a second Reaver+cluster anywhere without removing something I'd rather keep...so on the off chance I get to melta-lance-afiy something it stays haha

The Duke, complete with Slave Girl WIP! Haemonculi WIP...not 100% on the legs of Hammie 2...still thinking about what can be done

Nice work...but of all the models you could have used for the slave girl...why THAT one? Sorry, I have a vendetta against that model, with its oversized lips, horrible face and saggy tits...But then it is very old. The rest of him is absolutely fine, I just think you should have used a different model for the girl.
And I love the Haemonculi! Great idea using the Harlequin Shadowseer as the base model.

I'll happily accept alternate slave girl links

I've seen these before which would make good slave girls:
Harem Girls 1
Harem Girls 2
Available from the bronzeage site, here:
Harem Girls 1 from Germany / Harem Girls 2 from Germany
or here:
Harem Girls 1+2 from Japan I can't read it though - I found my way to them by the pictures

Hmm...That's a tricky one. Like I say, you could base something on the Pallid Handmaidens from the Coven throne. If you're not afraid to use non-GW models, Hasslefree do a selection of suitable models, althougy they are a little...NSFW. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, the dark elves line has some good options, particularly the plastic Sorceress, which would be easily convertable, perhaps with the "pigtails" wych head.

Thanks for the links Ovion, will look into them!
Squigsquasher: I actually have ordered the handmaidens and a stack of Dark Elf bits (mainly swords and armour) ... will see what I get when they arrrive...they may ride on The Duke's Raider Liking the Hasslefree stuff, might be a few potentials

I have really fallen away from GW and have gone to PP. However the great conversion work of people like you always makes me question that decision. Keep up the good work!

I like the duke and the massive swords really work for him. Is he done? or are you going to add more ornamentation?
Looking good however, keep it up

Hi Proto!
The Duke is just blu-tacked together at this point...I like the swords, but It just might be a bit crowded...I'll see what he looks like with twin daggers.
Going to get some paint on the Splinterborn now...so much building left to get ready for 2k points

If it helps, with my Duke model, I went with a sword and a dagger, which looked good. If you want / are interested I'll try to put up a photo tommorow if you want to see how that looks.

I think it's a nice start on your Duke figure, but you might want to do a display sort of base, where he's standing on a regular sized base that will fit into the larger one with the slave for when you need to field him in a game.

Post by: Brother Chaplain Kage
Glad you like the idea! You'd probably have to start over on a base for him, though. I'd suggest flipping the larger base over and then tracing the smaller one on the underside where you want it to go and then cutting it out.
As for the model, the knives looks pretty wicked, but I'm not a fan of the arm-mounted blaster weapon. Nothing against you or your model, it's just a personal thing - I don't think any of the arm/wrist mounted weapons from Grey Knights to Striking Scorpion or Dire Avenger Exarchs look good.
It's probably that the scale is so small and the weapons have to be so large to cast properly that it just doesn't look right to me.

You sir, have inspired to me get back into 40k with Dark Eldar. Love the way you've mixed and matched the kits, especially the Trueborn and Incubi.
Well done.

Post by: Vanq
Yeah, its not ideal Kage, too many weapons, not enough hands!
Thanks Griever, thats a great compliment I love the possibilities with the plastic kits and just how interchangeable they are.
Got some more slave girls in the mail, will do some more mockups for the Duke's harem

I'm probably just going to do a holstered blaster pistol on my Duke figure, but I know what you mean.

Holy s£!t I love that Razorwing!! That black/red effect would have the Borgia's wetting themselves. Great job of your whole Kabal, subscribed and Exalted! : ) Automatically Appended Next Post: How did you do that red fading black effect?

Nice, sliscus's trueborn are lookin cool, they're gonna look great together when you're finished. That's awesome that you modeled guys to hang off your raider that are identical to the splinter cannon guys! Never seen anyone model the guys hanging off the raiders with heavy weapons. How do you plan on magnetizing them? And do you plan on modeling a hanging version of your sliscus too? That would be so epic.
I have a feeling that in 6th edition, embarked troops will be able to shoot out of an open topped skimmer that moved 12, inches, in which case warrior gunboats might become effective units and splinter racks might actually become useful upgrades. Anyways, the point I'm trying to make is, opponents of most dark eldar players will be confused as to how 27 splinter shots are coming from a skinny, empty looking raider model, but that won't be the case for your opponents haha, that loaded raider is gonna look awesomely intimidating from the other side of the table.

Thanks guys! There should be some more paint progress next weekend, indulging in my other hobby this one (Track day prep is a killer ) I hope to get the army done, and deployed for a massive group shot
Urien: The Razorwing is a cheap trick I use on my CWE, basically (in this case) black spray undercoat, followed by a red undercoat spray. By only spraying from the front, you get a nice blend of colours...basically airbrushing on the cheap
Oneironaut: Thanks man, it looks so much better than the others that will just have a model balanced on them somewhere. Once its done there will also be a bunch of slave girls and the Duke himself so look forward to it
They are magnetised from the raider, hidden rare earth magnets on the inside of the hull, while the Splinterborn have metal embedded in their hands/feet to match. They clip on rather nicely
