Well we all have at least one or two on the mp3 list/ipods and such. Ive always said that no matter how bad a band is, they are capable of making 1 good song. So as the title says, post a video or similar of a song you like/love, BUT the catch is, it has to be by a band you dont really care for at all. Now I dont mean, you have to LOATHE the band to post, but as my pick shows.
I chose a song by the Cure - Burn. I just love this song (no not because it was on the Crow ) but personally, Im not a fan of the Cure by alot. Ive heard alot of their tunes, and at best they get a meh, from me. But this song is just the tits in my eyes.
Keep it going DAKKA, reach into your brains and pull those tunes out
That dream on cover by dio and yngwie malmsteen
I love dio, but malmsteen is a cocky prick.
I guess he's talented enough to make it tolerable, but guys like MAB are way nicer dudes for all their talent
There aren't any songs I like (yet) by bands I hate. There are bands/artists I loathe but I equally don't like any of their material.
I might like a video by a certain band that I may not like (because of the posturing and obvious 80s riffing) but videos and songs are different beasties.
Leader of Men by Nickleback. It's early on, and is actually a pretty cool song. The rest of the catalogue is schlock rock.
I have an elaborate theory about Nookie by Limp bizket: what if the song is about Fred Durst realizing that he really is a crass, superficial hack who really did create music simply to get laid, rather than out of some artisitic need? Like, he's actually ashamed of it, and reveals this shame in that one song. Would that become art? Would the entire Limp discography than also become art, so it supports the song?

Totally agree there. Thats a good song, the rest is just crap

YEEEEAA! (Im guessing that was edited? I never owned/listened to the actual CD as I dont like the Bizket)
filbert wrote:Hmm maybe Don't Fear The Reaper by BOC?
You hate BOC? I didn't realize anyone actively hated them...
There are a couple Kanye West songs that I like, even though I hate the bastard. "Through the wire" was pretty good. I like some of Eminem's old stuff, but I hate him too. He's freaking 38 and still acts like a punk kid 90% of the time.
If so, this is especially fitting, as I hate Meshuggah, and despise Lady GaGa, yet the combination of the song 'Bleed' with the song 'Paparazzi' is like crack to my eardrums.
Watch the video for full effect. It makes a lot more sense in this context.
They should totally tour together. I would pay ridiculous amounts of money to be able to see that.
The 'Crüe is a good one. Not a fan of Girls, Girls, Girls, but Kick Start My Heart and Dr. Feelgood are both disgustingly catchy songs.
Polonius' mention of Leader of Men by schlockmeisters Nickleback is a good call.
This is a tough one for me; I don't hate a lot of bands. Most of the acts mentioned in this thread are ones I enjoy. Heck, much as Durst is a laughable figure, I thought Significant Other was a pretty darn enjoyable album.
Probably the best I can manage is Creed's My Own Prison. That's a pretty good little song, from a godawful band.
filbert wrote:Hmm maybe Don't Fear The Reaper by BOC?
Any 40k player should also be able to dig Veteran of the Psychic Wars.
I've always found that tune to be annoyingly catchy, but I hate the song - only because the lyrics are wrong from the song they took it from. I know, it's really nitpicky, but I love "You Spin Me Right Round," and it always peeves me to hear people singing it the way in the modern version.
Chrysaor686 - Yikes. Maybe because I love Meshuggah but that made my head hurt. I lasted 45 seconds lol
Heres another for me. I just LOVE this song (odd because I cant stand this type of music) and went and bought the cd, it was terrible. Oh well good song
It would have to be "Waking up in Vegas" by Katie Perry. I despise all her other crap, as I do all the other pop princesses. However if you ever gave that song to a pop-punk band it would sound right kickass.

Kanye West is a good enough rapper, too bad he's a douchebag. That's my only problem. But I guess you don't have to like someone to like their music.
I feel like that towards Type O negative. I love the music they make, but Peter Steele was a total dick. Im talking bad.
When was he a dick? All the interviews I ever saw or read he seemed like a really down to earth New Yorker. I'm used to arrogance from New Yorkers, but he always seemed pretty grounded. I think most of the ones I've seen have been him sober, though.

Weird, most the interviews Ive seen him on he was rather pig headed, and a jerk. Not to mention I met him once in person, and simply commented "hey you write some good tunes" to which he responded "fan fething tastic" and stormed off.
Stormrider wrote:How could anyone hate BOC? What did they do to deserve that?
I think for me it's like why I can't stand the Eagles. Overexposure to the one or two songs that are played on the radio.
Exactly. But thart's the probelm with Classic rock radio programmers. They do surveys at random in the public. They play sample songs for the public and ask if the person had ever heard the song before (not telling who did it or what song it is), if they say no, they don't play it at all. Reagrdless of whether the said person said they liked it. They are far too cautious when it comes to playing music.

Huh. Fair enough. I know he had a lot of issues with depression and alcoholism.

Lost Relevancy - OmTheory
They have 2 good songs and thats it.
Not really much to say but I need to get the songs on my Ipod.
Both these songs are from crackdown. And I liked them for the mix of music they had within them.
Whoa whoa whoa.....Ill agree that any CURRENT Celldweller music is pretty bad. But his first cd was simply awesome. Just throwing that out there
Yeah never heard of him until the game Crackdown came out. Kinda sad really. Those songs were good. Then Crackdown 2 got rid of all the good music. And all the really cool cars. Another good song.
No, I actually mean if I am really pissed off by a certain part in a video game and feel like screaming at the TV. So instead of screaming at the TV so I can focus on actually playing the game, I listen to some other guy scream about random crap in the background while I rip aliens to pieces.
Hehe, I like pretty much everything listed so far.
Although to be fair, I probably like most of what you all like as well.
I'm just very open minded when it comes to music. I also find if I like an album I tend to find other songs that roll of the song that drew me to the band/artist. I can't think of any CD I own at the moment where I only like one song.
I doubt many folks have got Take That, Iron Maiden, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Trivium, 2Pac, Megadeath, Elvis and John Denver on the same shelf.
Oh, you're going to try to make it an eclectic-off now? How about Madonna, Rotting Christ, Cake, Sublime, Howie Day, The Beatles, Armand van Helden, Peter Murphy and Tracy Bonham?
Yeah, the only thing more annoying than a guy that only listens to one genre of music is the guy that's really proud of listening to all genres of music.
In the history of mankind, has anybody over the age of, say, 14, ever been impressed by another person's musical taste?

Naw, just spent a lot of time among music snobs, and wannabe music snobs. I'm interested in hearing what people like, because it might lead to stuff that I like, but I've long stopped caring what people think of my taste, or judging other peoples.

I know some wannabe music snobs. I've always had some fun trying to out-elite them. Bonus points for not knowing anything about the music or genre in question and getting them to believe you're serious.
"Are you kidding me? I was the FIRST person to listen to psychedelic acid polka fusion! I all but brought that genre to this state. I actually have the original Sven and the Mushroom Dots concert shirt from their US debut tour to prove it. Huh? Well, it's at home of course. I had it placed in a nitrogen rich display case in an artificial light only room, so that it wouldn't fade over time or anything."
I swear the next time I hear someone say they love music I am going to slap them across the mouth and say "NO". I would include writing but it is hard to reach through a computer and smack someone. Never in my life have I heard someone say they hated music and never would listen to any of it. I've never heard anyone even say they were disinterested in music. It's always "Oh, I love music", or some variation.
I enjoyed Dog Days more until I read the lyrics. Now I am less enthusiastic about hearing it. It is still ok, but now I hear it and think about the awful lyrics.

Elwood: What kind of music do you usually have here?
Claire: Oh, we got both kinds. We got country *and* western.

Basically a person talking? I have the thing for you:
Asherian Command wrote:I love almost all music genres. And rap and hip hop aren't music >.> neither is justin bieber that is basically a person talking thats not music.
I wasn't talking about someone with a ill-informed understanding of genre, I was referring to someone who talks about music in a general sense.

That mentality is why I like music threads on DAKKA. Ive found a crap ton of new music to listen to because of people on DAKKA.
I was going to say 'Drinking and Dreaming' by Waylon Jennings, but then I started to listen to more of his stuff on Youtube. I absolutely hated it as a kid when the oldman used to play it in the car, but now that I am older, on the cusp of being 'old', I think its all great.
SlaveToDorkness wrote:So you haven't bought any CDs in the last 20 years then?
So, is that remark directed at anyone in this thread specifically, or everyone? As for me, I usually know more about a band before I go to the lengths of actually buying a CD by them, so I know more of what they are like, but in the instance I stated, I was overwhelmed by the stooopidest sort of instant-fanboy momentum. Never again.

As I think it was mainly directed at me, I will hold my hands up. My post was me being in a bad mood, normally that kinda thing doesn't bother me either, but for some reason certain comments about bands I'm a big fan of actually caused me to get ticked off last night.
I did have a headache for nine hours mind, so it may have been grumbles from that.
Today I could not care less, and almost deleted my post from shame, but I'd rather admit it and hold my hands up.
I kinda agree with Polonius. I know loads of music snobs and they do my head in, there are million of people in the real world like "Barry" from High Fidelity.
My missus just gave me that book.. it was funny, but a bit feminine.
I hate Guns N Roses, but I have "Welcome to the Jungle" on my MP3 player, its great for the treadmill.
Music Snobs is what I was trying to get at in my first post, badly it seems. Seems my anology of liking most generes is equally frustrating to some.
I just get annoyed sometimes when folks make out one genre is the best thing ever, and everything else on the planet is pure tosh.
I remember getting into an arguement over on Druchii net years ago and getting slapped by a mod for it.
A group of posters in a thread suggesting you couldn't be a fan of music if you didn't go to local clubs every other week to see the small acts live and soon as they where famous and making money they'd sold out. Also dissing anything that wasn't in their 'genre' of choice.
I get a real itchy trigger finger when posting if I ever feel a taste of that going on.
Getting back on topic, I've been thinking long and hard and I remembered one, Spaceman by Babylon Zoo. Couldn't stand anything else on their album, but liked that one.
Albatross wrote:Who do you know who's a music snob, like?
Apart from me, that is.
Yeah of course there is you, but also several of the blokes i work with, loads of guys in my company, and oddly enough the worst one was my mate "ginge" and he was also from Manchester.
At least your an actual musician, and your biggest interest and hobby is music, you dont SAY you like it just to try and be trendy, but loads of people do!
I mean i think i get it, you must get more pussy if you say you like Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth and fething.. Joy division, Mogwai, Kraftwerk, Faust, Gram Parsons.. gak like that. Ive never had any issues getting laid however so i have missed the urge entirely, but I think basically half of people the wrong side of 30 are music snobs, or fashion snobs, one of the two. Music is like fashion as far as I can tell, in that People seem to try and use it as an extension of their charisma.
Theres bloody loads, and I have devised a fool proof indicator, if instead of writing maybe 3 bands and saying "rock" under the "music" bit of their facebook page, if you find a bloke has about 100 different acts physically listed, he is a music snob. Try it!
Find me a bloke with over 100 who doesnt have Sonic Youth. I notice none of them write something that we all universally like though.. like The Beatles or something.. no no.. cos its gotta be "with it"
I don't really "hate" the band,I think they're goofy as feth...but I don't hate 'em.
This song however is on my "play as loud as possible on the way to work"list.
Ill add another. For some weird ass reason I just love this song, and will randomly break out singing it for no reason. totally ruins a metal mood thats for sure. Anywho

Y'know what? I actually HATE Sonic Youth. Seriously. Never been able to get away with them.
I (sort of) like one or two of their tunes, but I don't own a single record by them. Hey! Someone should start a thread about that sort of thing!
I always viewed Sonic Youth as somewhat interesting and consider them,in many ways, the wellspring from which bands like Mudhoney,Guntruck and Nirvana have flown.

That song and All Star are awesome and their only good songs. So catchy.
