That's right people this year we have gone to a con instead of just a indy GT. All of the registration will be done through Battleroadgames.com webstore.

"I HAVE DECIDED DUE TO COMPLAINTS FROM LAST YEAR FROM HERE ON WE WILL BE DISSOLVING THE COMP COUNCIL!!!"

New changes too the venue!!! My apologies for this people but as was pointed out too me this weekend that the dates set are the same weekend as the Vegas GT. Though most people will not be going we wanted to give a chance for as many too come as could be. With that this morning the venue hall was changed as well as the date. This change actually worked in out better half as the new hall is at the Hudson, Mass Elks lodge. The lodge will have airconditioning, Adult beverages available for purchase(with ID and cash only) as well as a food stand with burgers and such. Also they cut us a much better deal so we can take the money saved and put it towards more prizes and swag here are the events and dates as stands, and are now locked in.

-40k 1850 pts

Registration is now open and available for purchase at http://battleroadgames.com/ in the shop section. You need too purchase a weekend pass with your order initially but this is only $20.00 and then events have seperate costs.

Yeah to no more Comp! I think you will find that will lead to more fun, less complaints and a better event!

Good luck with it. So many fun events seem to be happening in the NE.

Their were to many complaints on the comp council so I find it easier to absolve it.

That has been the trend nation wide. Comp is going the way of the Dodo, and I think the game is much healthier for it.

5th edition seems to be more able to stand without it than earlier editions.

Indeed. It was a good thing when created, but now all it does is anger people. I am glad to see it go and let the door open to player creativity in list building.

I disagree with both of your premises, but will agree to disagree, as I am not in the mood to rehash that particular debate. Some fine Rakia and a Sam Adams Irish Red will do that, apparently.

Comp is tough. Half of the people want it and the other half don’t, but there is a lot of drama associated with it.

Couple of my friends attended last year. They had a great time. Just give us a final date and we will plan on coming from NY.

I you need help with anything let me know.

I will start posting everything next week. We will be doing the sign ups as well. Tournies will be much cheaper this year, but that also means their will be a weekend pass that has to be purchased. Namely last year "THIS GUY" lost $1200 bucks on last years so I don't intend on a repeat this year. I am no longer a highly paid barely working Gov't employee so ya.

Everything will have limited spots, and I am confirming the guests this week. Also Manahiem don't worry this year tertiary and all will count. I listened to the complaints from last year (suprisingly not many) and we are following through.

Hudson, MA is a long ways away from Boston to advertise it as a Boston event

Sweet. Depending on the date, I'm nearly a shoe-in for attendance. If I'm feeling super-generous, maybe volunteering to half with staffing and whatnot.

Really?

Not it's not at all. It's certainly a lot closer than a Providence, RI or Portsmouth, NH event, so what it's supposed to be called?

Hudson is plenty close to be called a Boston event, my only suggestion is if you are traveling and spending the night, don't book Boston or so, try the Worcester area and save money and time!

..... seriously.. Not really being I used to live in Somerville and work in Hudson. Right now it comes down to which hall is available. I am hoping for Hudson being that one has air conditioning. If you would like though to give some great imput please feel free to volunteer for the event as we need some great support staff.

I might be interested in such an event, as its within a couple of hours of me. What are you looking at for a price tag?

2nd Annual Boston Brawlcon Results!! @ 2011/01/05 03:34:08

Post by: Empchild

Depends on tourney but most likely $20 weekend pass, and then say for the bigger events IE 40k and fantasy $30.00 a ticket, and for the smaller ones FOW and WARMACHINE $15.00 a ticket. As per classes so far Joe Orteza is looking to give some seminars, so the prices for his classes are up to him, and the 2nd of the 3 who were invited is going over his calendar. The 2nd and third invitees both in one way or another work for battlefront as a clue.

Alrighty, after some last minute corrections we have our new venue hall locked in. It is more centralized and is at the Framingham National Guard Armory. We will be posting the registration up later this weekend for all of the events. You will have too purchase a weekend pass but the events themselves will be fairly inexpensive. This is a Friday night through Sunday event now, and will include 40k, WF, FOW, and Warmachine. We also will have a vendors area for you too purchase product in, as well as a food stand for basic snacks and such. We choose this location due to availability and size. Also their will be a much bigger painting comp this year, with a charity auction at the end of Saturday.

More updates too follow soon!

How does the site physically compare to last year's? Is it similar, but bigger? Still a wood floor? Any AC?

Post by: Empchild

Still a wood floor :( bigger, no AC but suprisingly not really needed there. I have been there during the sumer with 400+ people in it and was not sweating at all. I will however be renting fans just too please the Masses. Better Parking, food within a few blocks and best part low Crime!!!! We are right next too the county court house and the state Police Barracks_. The building is newer...a lot newer and has been well updated so we should be a lot more comfortable then last year. Also I have volunteers this year so Terrain is already being built, as well as tables prepped. If this year does well enough next year will be at a hotel... I promise. If this year bombs well... no more brawl :(.

Post by: Empchild

@Boss: Still talking it over with my co-organizers but we are thinking either 2k or 2250 for fantasy, and 1850 for 40k.

-This is a Garuntee but no Special Character for either 40k or Fantasy will be allowed, also and I can't stress this but no comp. Instead however the overall points will consist of :
-60% battle
-15% Paint
-20% Sports
-5% Theme

Ergo if you suck at everything else, but do well battle you will still be in the running. These percentages are not nailed down as battle may go up.

Post by: Mannahnin

The site sounds great. I actually didn't have a problem with the wood floor; it was certainly much better than concrete like at the last couple of Baltimore GTs. I was more just trying to get a sense for what it'll be like/picture in my head.

No special characters? Seriously?

A lot of folks have whole armies built around them nowadays, like Deathwing, Ravenwing, Loganwing, Ravenwing/Shrike, White Scars using Khan, Sallies using Vulkan, etc.

Certain older codices (Eldar, Dark Angels) also depend a lot on certain characters to make their army function competitively. With the new FAQ from January, there are a lot of Deathwing armies springing up now; with no Belial, people can't even field those armies.

I'm really looking forward to this event, and I barely ever use SCs myself, so it really doesn't affect me, except that I think banning them is likely to make some players stay away. And I'd like to see this thing have maximum attendance and keep going for the foreseeable future!

Also, if I may pimp my own work, I'd like to humbly submit that the Pass/Fail Sportsmanship scoring might be a nice approach on the Sportsmanship scoring side.

Alex, I'll definitely be there again this year. See if I can't win it two years in a row.

One word of advice, if you want to ban Special Characters for 40k, you should at least consider allowing the guys that allow Ravenwing/Deathwing.

I would also caution against banning special characters in the first place, or maybe just put a cap on them: like no SC's over 200 points. Or even allow all special characters but have the ones over 200 points give you a minus to your theme.

Anyway give it some thought. At the European Team Championship there were no SC's and it didn't really encourage a diversity of lists like you would expect.

skyth wrote:bostonbrawl.com doesn't work.

Damn straight We will be hosting through my company website battleroadgames.com. I saw little point in paying for both as the company site is much better equiped.

@Wyatt: This year I have a special prize for the winners of 40k and Fantasy. I will pay the plane tickets (yep I said plane tickets) too adepticon for the winners...AND!!!!!!! Give each winner a full army of 1850 for 40k and 2000pts in fantasy. I think this will really push the limits with people as that is about $1000 in prizes for each person, and that's just from me. I have no idea what the sponsors will donate!

Ok offical ruling here as a couple of people have talked too me about it. 40K is allowed special characters, but Fantasy is not. The reason being is the Fantasy guys seem too hate the idea more then the 40k so I am willing too play ball.

Also after reviewing Mannhiems sportsmanship layout I dare say I rather like it and find it too be the most balanced I have ever seen. With a minor tweek added in we will be using the pass fail system. Too many people last year game out max scores for every game and that just killed the whole thing.

Also I have talked with mike and will be using the same scenerios as he does as I suck at creating these, and Adepticon doesn't have enough for 5 games.

Don't Forget Friday will be a Warbands and Combat Patrols tourney, with guest speaker, and sit down Joe Orteza!!!!!! Also Jason Buyaki is also looking as being our second Special Guest for the event this year, we are just confirming dates with him. If you don't know who either of these gents are then please look them up!!!!!!

Well saddly due too the date change Mr. Jason Buyaki is unable too attend. Though this saddens us we understand thoroughly that family needs to come first. As such our other guest has confirmed, and as such we will be offering up a Friday Night Dinner as a contest. Five gamers will be selected at random from the first 50 sign ups and will be treated too a high class dinner at the Met Burger Bar in Natick on Friday evening. This is a 4 star restaurant and is a great place to have a meet and greet with our special guest. Also we have one more guest we will be announcing soon but just to give you a hint he has over 12 Golden Demons!!!!

So with that don't wait too long head on over too Battleroadgames.com and sign up!!! (Wyatt your already counted so don't worry).

Cool to see the painting rubric! Thanks!

I have a few questions about it, if you don't mind.

3pts= Their is freehand painting done on the army as well as true artistic work and depth with shadows and weathering.

Just to confirm: Freehand only counts if the army ALSO has true artistic work AND depth with shadows and weathering?

is there a particular reason why these three things aren't each their own one point question? If I have depth and weathering, I don't get any points for that unless I also do some freehand?

4pts= This army is easily one of my top five choices.

4pts= This army is easily one of my top 3 choices.

3pts= Top choice Army
2pts= Second Choice Army
1pt= Third choice Army

Okay, any army which is not top 5 maxes out at 12/20. The 5th and 4th best armies cap at 16/20.

For a moment let's say that both judges agree on the top three armies at the event.

So the 6th best-painted army at the event totals 24pts for painting (if he hits all the first 8 questions). The 3rd best gets 42 (21 per judge), the 2nd best 44, and the best army maxes out at 46pts on painting. That's right?

Painting's included in the Overall, yes?

2nd Annual Boston Brawlcon Results!! @ 2011/03/10 00:08:30

Post by: Empchild

Painting and sport will fit in with the overall yes. I did this as it fits in with the older GW method for GT.

-The reasoning on the whole freehand it is an all incompassing set of points. So if you do some freehand, or go heavy on shadows and such, or heavy weathering it will give you the three points as that shows more of the effort and covers the three main artistic styles people shoot for in painting. That way if somone does a lot of freehand but no weathering they will get the same recognition as somone with heavy skilled weathering if that makes sense.

-Also the top ones really depend on what's there so I can't say for certain how that plays out.

- I wanted a straight forward rubric that covered all of the general concepts of painting. As you can see a display board IS NOT on there as I don't personally believe that should be judged.

After talking with the other organizers we have decided to make a major switch to the Brawl. With little sign ups in the other events we have decided to cancel those and only do 40k. Also we will be having other awards going out there too so be prepared.

I'm planning on playing in the 1850 40k tournament so I bought the $20 weekend pass & the $15 40k pass. The $15 pass is called "Saturday... first round." here: http://www.battleroadgames.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=10&zenid=1hqlljbeglt36v6c4t26pc89m7

Do I also need to purchase a Sunday second round ticket?

Is the painting competition still set up the same, fantasy and scifi?

The painting is actually going to an open format.. we were going to announce that next week.

For those who don't know what an open format is, you bring several models and put them into the comp as a grouping. From here we determine which is gold silver or bronze. There could literally be Zero golds and 7 bronzes, or no tropheys at all (never heard of that happening but you get the point). This way you are not limited to GW or anything. It could be any of the models from your collection that you bring, but we will pick one or two of them to judge from.

Having too much terrain is like having too much sex: I guess it's THEORETICALLY possible, but it sure hasn't happened to me yet.

Greetings All, this is just a friendly reminder that we will be closing registration in 5 days at 11:59PM on June 25th. Also we will have some product availble for sale there at the brawl and will be taking credit only, but the Bar and snacks is Cash only so please remember if you want drinks to bring cash with you. For those at the Brawl we will be doing an ADDITIONAL 15% off to our items purchased, or ordered while you are at the brawl. If we don't have it on hand then you still just pay and we will order it for you and ship it to whatever location you would like. This is 15% off our already 10% off MSRP so take advantage of it, but remember this is for those going to the Boston Brawl and is a special offer for them alone.

I was re-reading the packet for a practice game yesterday and was reminded that players are supposed to bring three objective markers on 40mm bases. So don't forget 'em, folks!

(in a pinch, a poker chip is about the same size; though modeled ones are cooler)

Oh, also, I didn't see anything about how many copies of your army list to bring. Empchild, should folks plan to bring at least six (one for the judges, one for each opponent) and leave one copy by our army between rounds so judges can identify it when they're scoring our painting?

Schedule update:

I talked to Empchild, and he is still planning to be on-site around 7am if anyone is getting in early, but he has pushed back the start time to accomodate folks traveling, and because the event is no longer squeezing multiple game systems in on Saturday. Saturday's schedule now goes, roughly:

~7am: Doors open
8:00: General tournament announcements and any rules/terrain questions
8:30am: Pairings and table assignments go up
9:00am: Round 1 begins.
11:00am: The bar opens
11:30am: Round 1 ends, lunch begins
12:15pm: Round 2 pairings go up.
12:30pm: Round 2 begins
3:00pm: Round 2 ends
3:15-3:20ish: Round 3 pairings go up.
3:30pm: Round 3 begins
6:00pm: Round 3 ends.

Thanks for the photos! That DW army is Alex's third place one.

Empchild, thanks for running! Despite the light terrain, this was a really great time. The prize support was awesome, and the tournament structure definitely good. I had five fun opponents, and if I had played or rolled a bit better against Ben, I might have made up that 1pt, so it was really in my own hands.

Inquisitor Mack and whoever else, thanks very much for bringing more terrain. It really helped.

Thanks also to my five opponents, Ben, Rob, Bill, Sam, and Ryan. Five excellent games, most of which were (IMO) closer than the final scores (3/17, 18/2, 20/0, 20/0, 20/0) indicated.

21 players and $5,000 in prizes?

Are those 40k or Fantasy tables in the pictures? I see some of those Fantasy hills, but not a lot of BLOS or substantive terrain.

Almost 10 people who paid and signed up didn't show, then we had a few others pull out before the final round of the tourney so as such I removed them from the roster completely. Some of the tables were a little light saddly as the people who promised us the terrain didn't realize how much of theres they really had, but it worked out in the end. I have somone starting in 1 month on the terrain for next year so we don't have that problem again, but ya the prizes were big and it will just continue to get bigger .

Look again, Dash. If you compare that player roster to rankingsHQ, you'll find that the best eight or ten players in the northeast are in there: Vegas attendees, multiple GT winners, ETC players...

The field was small, but there was nobody on the top tables on Sunday who couldn't hold their own with anybody in the U.S. Those are the guys you had to beat to score in the money.

(I'm in the middle of the pack, btw, after Ben knocked me down in round 3.)

It was incredably crazy points wise honestly in the end. Three of our awards were within one point or a tie so we really had to sit there and go through everythng to determine certain winners. Although Dash we don't design the prizes around the amount of people. I get whatever the sponsors give and hand that out. In the Case of the overall I set up and stated well before the event about the 2k pts army and the plane ticket too adepticon plus their tourney ticket. Maybe the great prizes will bring more people out next year.

Thought I would do some humor to lighten the discussion a bit. Congrats to the winners and the quality of players at Brawlcon is its own quantity. Great job Ben on proving why you are team captain. Ben did beat Dash at Wargamescon so it was no fluke he won Brawlcon. Very beautiful demon army in the pics.
