I just saw something hilarious (to me, at least) and depressing on facebook. It's a brief discussion between a a young teenage girl (around15-16? Not entirely sure. She's a relative) and a mate of hers. Behold:

Girl 1: "had a dream our country got bombed it was genuinly really really really horrible... and that was just a dream...I really hope it never happens!"

Girl 2: "it has happened?"

Girl 1: "I mean like again."

Girl 2: "oh :Lthen yeah that would be gay."

Brilliant.

I have ten year old boys.

Everything is either

'Sick'
'Sad'
Or has been 'clocked'.

Apparently rap/hip hop is really big again, only it isn't rap and hip hop , rhyming over a beat is called grime core? nerd rage? fat sally? or something of that Ilk. It hasn't been heard before, really.

It's wicked gay.

I actually got 3 hours of detention for slapping a kid for saying "That kid is so fething gay." Since when is gay a derogatory statement? My friend is gay, and I feel for him every time someone walks by him at schools, and laughs. (He's pretty open)

And sex is rampant at 14. I wonder how the gods have allowed no-one to get preggers.

Just to make sure you understand, I am 13 and agree with everything that has been said. Apart from the few who can use their brain, young people in Western Australia have either succumbed to 1337 speak or the equivalent of permanent Tourette's sydrome (swearing uncontrollably for no reason). Those or they are just plain stupid.
As I will no doubt waffle on, I will describe an event that illustrates my point as basically as possible.

My train pulls up at a station and no one gets off. Guy about my age runs up to the door and presses the button to open it. Not only does he not get off, but he makes a young couple (about 15/16), who were leaning on, the door stagger to keep their balance. This is where it gets funny;
Boyfriend: "What the f*ck do you think you're doing?"
Girlfriend: "I was leaning on that you pr*ck!"
Kid: "Heh" *starts smiling*
Boyfriend: "Why the f*ck you smiling c*nt? Some kind of slow?"
Grilfriend: "You should bash him"
Boyfriend: "I will if the c*nt doesn't wipe that f*cking smile off his f*cking face"
*couple move down carriage*
Kid: "LOL, OMG that was so funny"
*me staring at him*

See, now even I'm not sure if that makes sense. We are a stuffed up generation. With exceptions.

For a 13 year old, I must say, you seem remarkably literate. I've seen your posts and I honestly thought you were significantly older. With regard to the exchange that you mention above, it's sadly not limited to "them kids these days". I work with day traders in NY. They're some of the foulest mouthed people I've ever dealt with next to sailors. There's nothing quite like calling someone up, genuinely TRYING to help them, and after they find out who you are, and what you're trying to do, getting a "What the f' are you calling me about that for? I don't know anything about it!" and a slam down of the receiver.

Worst part is that it's contagious. I have a hard time stopping myself from launching into a tirade sometimes.

Then dragging his ugly carcass from under said bus before throwing him off a bridge.

You know, given how each generation of "Kids Today" has consistently been the most ignorant, lazy, respectful, immoral, stubborn, reckless, tasteless and stupid ever to live, I'm shocked the human race is still functioning. For all that has changed over the thousands of years of recorded history the unfailing sign of declining civilization in the form of "Kids Today" has been very consistent.

In fact given where we are today I can only assume the whole "Cave Man" thing is a myth. After all since "Kids Today" have always been just the worst generation to date, it stands to reason that each previous generation was better. It seems to be the logical conclusion then, that the people of prehistory were some kind of transcendent super beings, that were nigh-immortal masters of every possible discipline, each able to do the work of 10,000 modern humans. They must have unending empathy for their fellows, and an ability for rational planning that bordered on clairvoyance. Obviously the only reason we have no records of these magnificent beings is that after so many generations of being "Kids Today" our minds are simply to primitive and debauched to recognize them.

You know either that or young people as a whole have always tended to be just a bit immature, and older folks as a whole have always tended to be just a bit curmudgeony and overly eager to forget the more embarrassing aspects of their youth.

While I agree with some of the sentiment here, and found the post amusing as well,I don't see the overall issue as one of a steady decline from generation to generation.
If we take your cave man example, clearly there was a steady incline in human intelligence over many thousands of years, eventually leading up to the existence of "modern man".from that point on there has been an ebb and flow of intelligence, ages of extreme enlightenment, periods of less than brilliant moments and so on,

However, when examining the current crop of "kids these days",it appears ,to me at least, that it's a period of decline, sure past generations of kids did alot of stupid things, but this seems to me to be the first modern generation to genuinely embrace and glorify stupidity to the point of idolization of the moronic.

...of course ,I am a curmudgeony old guy....so I could be wrong.

There is something hilariously fantastic about every last bit of this though. Behaviour isn't something that just magically happens. The majority of it is learned, with a (small to moderate) amount of genetic influence. Thus the corollary to the argument "each generation of kids gets worse" would actually be that "each generation of parents keeps fething them up in more and more creative a way." Alternatively, to go with the corollary to your argument, FITZZ, would be that this generation of parents has allowed them to genuinely embrace and glorify stupidity.

Also, I blame TV.

See, I will wholeheartedly agree that previous generations of parents by and large have been tremendous failures at raising their offspring, particularly in the last 15-20 years, between either being to "busy" to become actively involved in their children's life or being so involved they attempt to shield their offspring from every possible adversity/trauma and encase them in psychological bubble wrap...it's no wonder kids are so fethed up.

I in no way advocate the abuse of children, but I do advocate a good swat on their backsides when they need it.

I'm going to agree with a few themes in this thread.

Hip hop blows, teenagers tend to be annoying (present company excluded of course, for the most part; you know who you are!) and it is possible for people of African American descent to be just as racist as their white counterparts.

Daleks.

Well, for one, the majority of sci-fi out there is utter crap. Secondly, I don't think you can compare something like a sci-fi or fantasy novel to a chemically induced high. It's a very, very different experience. And while I enjoy getting high with friends, I can't say that I like reading in groups (and trust me, I do read a fair bit, especially over the summer).

Also, new music (Except for a few new bands like maybe Cage The Elephant) mostly sucks, so why the hell do people listen to gak that isn't even music?

Every generation is like this, trust me. Older music may seem better, but that's only because anyone only ever remembers the stuff worth remembering. And the stuff worth remembering tends to either be really good, or really, really, really bad. And no one wants to play the bad stuff. There's plenty of good music out there, just don't expect to hear it on the Radio. Good music and popular music are not very familiar bedfellows.

Thankfully, with the advent of the internet, it's much easier to actually find that good stuff. And let me tell you, there is some crazy good stuff out there these days. Just look harder.

And there was this girl in my class that didn't know what accumulative meant. WTF what an idiot. This was an AP class!

And every single generation has their share of stupid gakkers.

I find myself having to dumb down my sentences on a regular basis.

I tend to be a fairly magniloquent speaker, and I never have to dumb down anything I say.

And me and my friends don't even care if we are insulted and crap like that for being nerds or Athiests or other stuff. (Nerds are the superior race!) We have never run into an instance where we were not quickly able to win an argument with one of the fething gaktarded prep girls or Jocks.

Who are you trying to convince?
I think you need to realize that although being smart is awesome, preaching to people who don't care isn't going to help your situation. If you've got greatness in you, you can keep it to yourself. People don't make fun of you for being smart, people make fun of you because smart is the only identity you are capable of assuming. Nothing wrong with being a nerd, but when a nerd is all you are, it makes for a pretty sad life.

Or you might just be a massive witch, who knows?

Now, since you're in highschool, where everyone still hasn't developed a strong identity yet and is thus trying to attach themselves to any sense of consistancy, even if it does mean arbitrarily conforming to the norms of others, this may be somewhat strange to understand, especially since I doubt you've seen The Breakfast Club, but a jock is not just a jock, and a nerd is not just a nerd. Or at least, they don't have to be. On one hand, sure, you can win an argument against a jock, but on the other? Why are you even in an argument? Why are you even trying to 'win' in the first place? Even if you make yourself seem smarter than them, you're doing so in a manner that alienates yourself and ends up with you sitting in the corner eating lunch alone. There doesn't need to be such a strict dichotomy between your social groups. You could even say that you're just as bad as the jocks that you and your friends so despise. Especially since I'm willing to bet that, secretly, you're jealous of them (and since most schools idolize sports events and pussy follows idols, I'm pretty damn sure of that bet too).

Now, there are a lot of stupid people out there. Enough to make you feel pretty bad about the world. But there are also a lot of people that don't ever get credit for their intelligence. Just because you fail to see someone's intelligence doesn't mean they don't have it.

No, he's actually a registered fighter. We don't really talk about his fighting much so I'm not sure exactly what league he's in, but as far as I know, he has no losses. I even recorded a video of him training once for a project. And at 22, I wouldn't really call him a kid either.

And as for my kickboxer friend, it's just what he does on the side. He's actually a swimmer (here's to hoping he gets into the olympics one day), but kickboxer sounds scarier.

I cannot agree more with this thread. It absolutely makes me wonder why the hell do we even try to do anything? I mean seriously! My generation is basically a bunch of perverted masterminded, racist, foul mouthed rapists!
It sounds stupid as hell what kids write to each other! Not to mention the fact that every bloody day I go to school i see a teenage couple swearing like crazy. I really hate todays kids. Because it has gotten progressively worse. But heres my contradiction. Doesn't every generation say the exact same thing? I am a 16 year old Guy who literally is freaked out when I see a 7 year old girl with a cell phone.
My parents have taught me discipline. Hell they believe it so much I was sent to a camp and was trained to obey and that is perfectly legal.
IT just really matters how you raise your kids. Techincally all you have to do is just tell your kids to obey and be thoughtful, and follow basic principles. OF course i might just be because i am in the scouts, and I hold on tight to my honors and such, but I make up for the failures of my friends by being a good person. Also the biggest gripe i have is the like syndrome, or the so-called stalkers. I believe my generation is wierd and stupid but other than that, it is just a thing that happens all the time. Every generation hates the generations below it.

Well, considering the location, I'd imagine he's probably registered with the MFC. I don't actually watch MMA (or any sport) or discuss it with him. I don't know if he's under any contract or anything (doubtful, since he's still in University, obviously), and from what google can tell me, he's only showed up on Top MMA news 3 times. Really, I'm the last guy to actually talk about his MMA career with, since I pretty much couldn't care less about the sport.

The point is, he's one of those people on my list of really scary people that got my back in any physical altercation.

I saw a news article that basically stated that nearly 1/4th of people who take military entrance exams in the US, that are of the "currently in, or under 1 year removed from High School" category (read, 16-18 years old) fail the test. The military doesnt really change its tests all that often, and being that i took it, and got a pretty damn good job in the army, its not a hard test at all.

The education system is failing, and i blame a few people for that: congress and government for taking funding away from schools; Rap Music, and all of its promoters; and Parents.

Socially we really are on a decline. With the popularity of rap "music" and a lack of proper parenting, especially with so many single parent, raised by women "boys" there are, its no wonder things are becoming progressively worse. Government loves to blame the video game industry, but its really more the things ive already mentioned

Also, starting next school year, the state of Oregon will allow Spell check to be used on its state exams, how dumb do we need people to be?

yeah, i can agree that it is largely the "idols" that affect people, but if you really listen to the content, or read the lyrics, you will see that its full of hate(especially towards particular groups of people), promotes illegal and illicit activity, and is generally derogatory and is geared towards people of lower intelligence levels.

Now, i DO realize that hate is not limited to one particular genre of music, however i have not found too many successful music groups in any other genre that hate one particular group of people over another. There are many musicians out there who will base albums off of a piece of Literature (Mastodon's album "Leviathan" is based off of the book "Moby Dick")

What i wanted to convey as my main points, was that its parents who are most "at fault" for how the more current generations seem, by and large to be getting more and more stupid.

Kids today... @ 2011/01/07 07:29:13

Post by: dogma

Interestingly, many cognitive psychologists (including quite a few eminent ones, like Steven Pinker) have exactly the opposite to say about succeeding generations.

To take your spell-check example: imagine how much more useful information you could contain in your mind (as there is a finite limit) if you didn't have to worry so much about spelling a word correctly. I mean really, being able to spell correctly, without aid, has almost nothing to do with possessing a significant intellect; its merely something we've come to accept, culturally, as a sign of such things.

To put it another way: No one in their right mind would hire someone because they won numerous spelling bees. Well, not unless they were in need of a professional speller of some sort.

That said, I do think that Americans seem to be getting less knowledgeable, and many tests and survey have shown that they are, on average, less knowledgeable than their Western peers. Its easy to blame this on parents, but the problem is likely larger than that. After all, parents don't act in a vacuum. It seems to me that the issue is tightly related to geographic isolation (for all its cosmopolitan cities, many (most?) Americans are unlikely to interact with people from other nations), and a culture of entitlement that extends from the general notion that America is supposedly the best at everything by reason of being America.

Boxing is a great sport, MMA seems to be what all the chislers have a hard in for!

Because there are people who do it incorrectly and in an unsafe manner that can end up hurting themselves or others. Actually, I'm pretty sure there was a recent case where some kid died because him and a friend were imitating MMA fights.

There's a big difference between someone with a dedicated knowledge jujitsu/mauythai/kickboxing/wrestling fighting in a ring with constant trained moderation and medical staff on hand at all times. Where as there are strict rules in play, and fighters know the limits of their and their opponent's bodies within reason, amateurs have none of that.

There's nothing wrong with getting into it and learning it, but if you do, you need to do it properly. Randomly slugging out with others is bound to end badly.

yeah, i can agree that it is largely the "idols" that affect people, but if you really listen to the content, or read the lyrics, you will see that its full of hate(especially towards particular groups of people), promotes illegal and illicit activity, and is generally derogatory and is geared towards people of lower intelligence levels.

First off, you haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about. Secondly, the same has been said about Punk Rock, Rock and Roll, Blues, Metal - even Jazz. This moral panic is an age-old aspect of popular cultural discourse. Music is music - a form of cultural text which, like any other, is accommodating of disparate subjective readings. Its uses and functions vary from person-to-person. That's how culture works. I own rap records, and can enjoy them on their own terms. I am not of a lower level of intelligence. Actually, I would put it to you that it is YOU who lacks the intelligence to be sufficiently aware that such an essentialist reading of a textual form (not even a specific text!) is pretty much the worst thing one can do, in terms of the study of culture.

You are to musical insight what Sarah Palin is to political insight, simply put.

So what?

I own a rap record as well mate, and i hate rap music.

Doggystyle by Snoop Doggy Dogg.

I thought it was cool when i was 15, now i think it is cool because the lyrics are actually hilarious. Here is a good one.

"Guess who is back in da mother fething house, with a fat dick fo ya mutha fething mouth"

Genius!

The funny part is, Snoop and all his mates are in on the joke. I remember googling "Warren G" and finding out that is he best mates with George Osbourne, likes playing tennis, and is related in some way to the Belgian nobility or something.

I lke to think that the whole thing is like some sort of cleverly orchestrated joke played on the kids who actually copy the rappers they see on TV.

Yeah, I'm fairly lost on this guy's point too.

And as for lyrics full of hate? Morrissey's been doing that for over 30 years now and his music is some of the smartest in the business. Hell, everyone's been doing that since forever. You know what they say, Noise is the Best Revenge. Or maybe I just like Morrissey a bit too much...

And basing music off of classic literature? Once again, everyone and their dog. And in the case of your example, it's not that smart either. Paraphrasing what happens in a book doesn't make a song any smarter than if it were about "cappin' [see forum posting rules] and fuckin' bitches." It's when you take the meanings of the inspiration and interpret it in a new way that applies to your own life.

And for the record, although I generally hate rap, I do have the soundtrack to Madworld on my hard drive. Good stuff.

Yeah this one. Short people are usually crazy dangerous. They're all vicious to make up for the fact that they're a foot shorter than everyone else. I had to find this out the hard way once. If your friends are where you run for your bravado though, and that works for you, great. I hope they're always there for you, and that the guy you piss off doesn't find you when they're not.

I don't know about MMA fighters or kickboxers, but I'm a fat guy who threw another fat guy over my shoulder once and I've seen Fight Club and the Matrix. Does that qualify for the Internet Tough Guy Club?

I dont necessarily know who Morrissey is, but, when you listen to his music, does he target one specific group of individuals? But thats not really on topic, in this particular topic (however music was brought up within context) Though, looking at music through the years, especially in the 20th century, you notice how each generation's music inevitably is the "worst" ever seen, and is the root of all evil in whatever country. Perhaps the next step is truly the problem in society, in regards to music, The next "root of all evil" music style comes out, and the one before becomes normal or at least, not so bad as before, sort of a immunization and learned ignorance of 'lesser evils'

As for MMA, i couldnt agree more, one can just hope that it shows itself to be similar in nature to Parachute pants, a fad that will fade over time but will never quite truly die.

My bottom line though, is that the vast majority of social ills today, stems directly from parenting, or the lack thereof. So many folks today grow up in broken homes, with no true father figure to properly teach/discipline them while growing up. Not everyone raised solely by a mother/grandmother or other matriarchal figure turns out bad. But, without true parental figures to teach kids right from wrong down to minute details, naturally things in the larger scheme are going to degrade.

Threads like these irritate me.

Kids today are not stupid as a whole, and generations are not getting slowly worse. There is certainly a larger variation in intelligence, with the smarter people getting much smarter, and the dumb people becoming more so, but people don't seem to notice the smart people do they?

And don't forget that a large amount of the problems with children these days are due to parents not taking resposibility for their children, an example is the programmes on BBC3 where they take badly behaved kids, send them to live with parents who are incredibly strict, and suddenly, miraculously they start doing as they are told!?! :O

And hey, maybe some of us don't try anything because we believe that there isn't anything that we can do about the economy because the last generation screwed it up?!

Just a thought..

That's a fallacious argument.
You've taken an average dumb person, and then half of the overall population.
Your example would work if you took half the dumb people, but then that wouldn't make it seem like the end of the world though would it?

Well, EVERYONE hates on Maggie. Seriously though, there's a lot of bands that portray hateful, foul, or otherwise "bad" lyrics. The thing is that there was always a level of, well, for lack of a better word, class, about them. Let us take "Boyz in the Da Hood", which is of the old school by comparison to modern day standards:

http://www.lyrics007.com/E%20Eazy%20Lyrics/Boyz%20In%20Da%20Hood%20Lyrics.html (not copypasta due to, well, language.)

And compare it with, say, "We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful":

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/We-Hate-It-When-Our-Friends-Become-Successful-lyrics-Morrissey/9295C5B68C71CEE7482568AB0034D0EE

Morrissey is a spiteful, bitter little man, which I understand and appreciate, but he operates within constraints. Rap isn't about music or a message, it's about 'shock value'. That's why it seems to get more and more out of hand. Each generation has to outdo the next.

Wait, what? I thought this was the Morrissey thread.

I think what he's saying in this particular case is that if you take the "average" person (let us call him Fred) who is at the 50% mark for an arbitrary degree of intelligence (because there are tests for that, and highly accurate, after all), then you consider the phenomenon of how 100% of the people in the world consider average people to be dull or otherwise stupid, and then finally apply it to Fred, you'll find that half the world is even less intelligent than the already knuckdragging average caveman, I mean Fred.

Honestly, I say we're all slowed. It's just fun to hate on the youngsters because they get the most indigent about it.

Left (or right) politics have nothing to do with it. If anything, it's general prosperity and ubiquitous access to cheap, easy entertainment, which reduce the need for people to work hard and improve their minds.

That and Da Boss' sig. Or this classic:

“Our earth is degenerate in these latter days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching,” attributed to an Assyrian stone tablet of about 2800 B.C.—William L. Generation are defined by those who decide to be different so most of the kids who rebel are the assumed posterchildren of that generation. Most of the kids of any generation are mild mannered but they don't stand out at all so they aren't noticed.

My generation is known for being technologically inclined, lazy, rude, and overall unintelligent.

I know how to use computers, spent my holiday breaking up and pouring concrete for a family friend(yes I am getting paid, but its below minimum wage), I hold the door open for people, and I am an elderly lady's friend because we both think Teddy Roosevelt was the best president ever of all times.

People like me won't get noticed, but those stupid 'scene-kids' who put holes the size of a dinner plate in their ears, cut half their hair and spike the other half, wear tight skinny jeans, drink when their 14, have sex in middle school, think sex is less intimate than kissing, and hang around being miscreants and degenerates are going to define my generation. That just ticks me off.

I'll be 18 in March, and most of my friends have had a girlfriend (some have even, ya know, done it); I haven't had a girlfriend or a boyfriend (in fact the majority of both genders are repulsed by me, which is why more of my friends haven't had a partner/had sex; I don't exactly have a large group of friends to begin with). I can't take my alcohol (tried twice and I tend to blow chunks after the third lager, anything stronger than lager tastes revolting). I'm religious. I treat people of other religions, backgrounds etc. equally. I am willing to work (i've spent the last 6 months working for free) and learn.

My brother is 16 in July. He has had umpteen girlfriends. He hasn't had sex but obviously sees it as something to brag about and has glorified it to the same level that he has glorified alcohol, where if you're not having it then there's something wrong with you. He is an atheist and believes all religion is bull****. He is intolerant of anyone who is different, be it a different race or different sexual orientation or anything else. The concept of work is alien to him, and he is reluctant to learn.

The majority of people of his age group that I have met have shared these beliefs, if only a few (notably the alcohol and sex); those of my age group also glorify alcohola dns ex, although not nearly to the same degree, and are all far more tolerant of others.

Whilst these obviously cannot speak for the entirety of today's youth, it does speak for the chunk that I have experienced.

yeah religion will do that for you. Is your atheist brother with so many GFs who still hasnt had with no socio/religious pressure about morals just happen to be horribly deformed? Or just a really bad liar about one side or the other of that equation? oh yeah, don't worry about the booze thing. they call it 'tolerance' for a reason. You don't step into the game with 1000000 experience points.

Heh, at age 19 and in a similar situation to you... all that worries me is becoming complacent and/or no longer becoming proactive in seeking that special someone

Ofc that's hard to do if you're a bigger lightweight than Tweety Pie ...That tends to lead to either embarassing incidents or a bunch o' tagged pics on the old Facebook in which my eyes look off-centre somehow.

Personally, though, I still attach strong importance to it: I think our generation definitely has an embedded principle that it's some rite of passage (too much American Pie?) or that one isn't a normal human being if they don't manage it by 21... In honest I don't think my teenage self would be able to believe that I'd gone *this* long...

He's my brother, not a friend; making it all the worse.

As for deformation; part of me wants to say he's butt ugly, but that would be a biased opinion (heavily biased). Feelings aside, I wouldn't say he has any deformations I know of.

Lies are also possible with him, but nobody knows for sure; he manages to lie about nearly everything AND get away with it, with multiple people multiple times. He also rarely gets caught.

The only things he doesn't think are a necessity are smoking and illegal drugs.

Well tbh even the ugly can appear otherwise if they carry themselves well-enough, at least in the case of males?

Money helps.

I'm sure we can swing you around.

As for people who have heaps of girlfriends but never sex, I know a guy like that. I'm pretty sure he was actually gay or I was just jealous.

For the record, I don't think this generation is any worse or better than the ones preceding it.

I just found a funny conversation on facebook and wanted to share it because I love you (plural). I might just be saying that so that I can sleep with you (plural), mind.
