Hey everyone! Cataclysmus Here, from Cataclysm Studios, and I am entering this blog for my first BFA project of 2011! (BFA means Big ummmm...FUN Army!) This will focus on a day-to-day assemblage of My home-grown Cadian pattern force that, in the end, will comprise of over 6000+ points! At the end of this project, I will be Sponsoring, and playing in a massive Apocalypse game of 25000 pts per side, at my FLGS, Phoenix Games. This game will include some really huge and impressive models, many of which have been painted by yours truly!
But enough of that. The date of the game is Feb 26th, so I have plenty to do until then.

Today, we start with the core of the force, a 2500+ pt company of infantry, the 3rd Tovarin Fusiliers! They are led by a fellow named Colonel Franz Cannonade. Some of you might notice his uncanny resemblance to a high-profile hero of the Imperium. but he insists there is no relation, and that all assumptions along that direction are, of course, (hrm) mistaken.

Here he is...

Allrighty, this force is going to be pretty big, and when finished, I'm going to put it up on ebay. So... one of the things I like to do are magnetic display boards. This one will be pretty massive, so I'm cutting it in to thirds. (24x48" mdf board). I'll need an additional board for the baneblades, so....
Here is the layout I did to make sure I have room for everything.

No Mortal could make a 6000+ army in less than 2 months!
I expect great things, and a lot of fun.

Ahh, that IS the rub. We shall see.
Now, for today's update. I have put sheet metal on the MDF boards, and they are currently pressed in my studio, allowing the epoxy to dry. While that is going on, the Schola Progenium has sent a watchdog to oversee the Formation of this, the Tovarin 3rd Fusiliers. (Perhaps they are suspicious about the strange resemblance he bears to a certain Castellan-General...)
Lord Commisar Cestus will accompany the force on any and all missions they should happen to be assigned.

He looks good, but the paint on his leg, and shirt (the white one) looks a bit thick
could just be the lighting/camera though
from memory there used to be an artical on GW on how to paint guard quickly, don't know wether its still there though!
you may need to pick the pace up a bit, we're almost half way through January!!

Yeah, for this army I'm going for a solid Tabletop Standard. I usually pull out the big guns on centerpieces and one-offs. I'm working on a high-end commission right now, as well, that is about 3 orders of magnitude better than these. This army will be a 3-stage highlight. Also, I'm still learning about my camera, so that should get better, as well.

This is very ambitious. Good luck completing that horde in 2 months! I can't wait to see the whole force together... and I really can't wait to see the battle report from that up coming game! 25000 point cap!

Ok, a couple of amendments on the points values in question: The total points per side will be 33k. (I play with psychos.) Also, I've ginned up the actual list for my IG, and that total is 6870. As I complete components, I'll keep a running total of points. So far, that total, with what I have posted, is 175. I think I have a bit left to do

Allright, everyone! Here is the latest update from CataclysmStudios on the Great Guard Project. The good Colonel has recruited his first soldier! Banner-Sergeant Helyon has the distinct privilege of being the ranking NCO in this Regiment, as well as the most intimidating Badass this side of Caliban. A standard has been freshly woven by the DDHWAV (Department of Doting Housewives of Avros Tova). The flaming sword of Saint Tovarr is proudly emblazoned upon the sacred Blue and White of the House Avros, along with various commendations and endorsements given by the Ruling Troika.
And now, with regimental standard in hand, Banner-Sergeant Helyon joins the Colonel and Lord Commisar while surveying the great mustering field at the heart of the Tovarin Capital City- Tularia Magnus.

I supose 175pts COULD beat 6000+ pts of models, as long as 160pts of that is a DEATHSTRIKE MISSILE LAUNCHER!

Keep up the work, you'll get there someday!
(lets hope the last SUNDAY of the month!)

Troops have finally started to arrive! A few PDF vets from the local Guard post have been sent to form Col. Cannonade's retinue. After being issued with a vox and meltaguns (to heat the Colonel's coffee, of course), they are ready to whip this company into shape. Recruiting efforts have started to bear fruit, as well. Lieutenant McMaim, straight from OCS, has arrived to take command of Blue Platoon, and promptly was assigned his own retinue. Seeing the command structure beginning to take shape, a squad of infantry was assigned, a quick observation platform erected, and weapons issued from stores.
Being a forge world, Avros Tovarr has a plentiful supply of vehicles, so the Colonel and this first platoon have been issued Chimeras.
This brings the total points of the force to: 740.
More tomorrow, hopefully!

Anyways, the last Chimera chock full of troops rolled to muster today for Blue Platoon! Only the heavy element of this platoon remains, and then on to the next! Things are rolling along on schedule, but being fully stuck in, I can't see the end yet...

Well, enough whining, here are todays pics!

Annnnnnnd, here come the guns! Lascannon, to be precise. Todays harvest includes two squads of the buggers, to help take care of those pesky structure points my enemies are going to be throwing at me! The third squad experienced a miscommunication with Regimental HQ, and will be a day late. Only about an hour's worth of work left to finish the first platoon!!
As for the points, we are now up to: 1565

Today, the final Line Squad from Red Platoon Marches in! Unfortunately, local provosts picked up a bunch of motor pool drivers for DWH (Driving while Heretical), so no further chimeras could be assigned in time for deployment. Lt. McMaul is none too pleased, but the Colonel simply told him to suck it up.
The points total is now...2135. Only 5600 points to go!

Well, as far as plans are concerned... I have this IG Monster to churn out, play with, and sell. I am also working on my Thousand Sons Dio (see WIP blog). After this, aside from my normal commissions, I have a Tomb Kings army to do, and following that, A blood Angel's force, complete with stormravens! Also, I have a commission for an ork MegaNobs Army that will be painted to a Tournament Standard (Tier 2).
That's a quick summary of my next couple of months. Later today, I should have all the Heavy weapons teams for Red Platoon done and posted, and then on to Stormtroopers!

Today's crop has arrived! A little chivvying from the Colonel has gotten the Department Munitorum to send the entire Heavy Weapons Contingent for Red Platoon. This completes the two line platoons for the company. Now, as a proud graduate of the Schola Progenium, Lord Commisar Cestus has ordered up some Big Toy Soldiers to play with! Though the Colonel doesn't really like the airs these glory boys put on, a concise conversation with the Lord Commisar's power fist showed him the light.
They are en route, and should start arriving in a couple of days!
Total Points count is now at: 2330.

Is this a progress blog or just and extended P+M showcase seeing as we are getting a massive update every day? I know that I could never paint up 10 stormtroopers in 1 day

Nice work as usual, I like the green power cables on the 'glory boys'.

The Great Imperial Guard Project @ 2011/01/30 00:25:41

Post by: CATACLYSMUS

Ah, I was waiting for someone to say something like that. Believe it or not, this is a progress blog. I haven't been putting in 'Before' pictures due to the sheer volume of stuff I will have posted by the time this thread is done, but, to silence the doubters, I will start doing that.
Also, I have 3 other commissions I am working on, right now. One is on my other blog, about the Thousand Sons diorama I am building. The others are pretty unremarkable, and won't really generate much interest, IMHO.
Part of the reason I am doing this is to advertise my painting biz, Cataclysm Studios, to prove that I actually CAN crank out models as fast as I claim to. It has always been one of my selling points, and I want to be able to point at this blog as proof.
But yes, I did actually paint these guys today.

Thanks for the complements, everyone! These models are all my tabletop quality (Tier 1), which is basically a 3-stage wash and highlight. I might do a mini-WIP for the remaining squad tomorrow, with step-by-step descriptions of what I am doing. I have a couple of ways of cheating that might interest some of you.
The actual total time painting on these was 3 hrs, 2 min. (I keep close track of these things for my biz.)

The last infantry have proudly marched onto the field! Lord Commissar Cestus looks on proudly as the remaining Storm Troopers snap to attention before the reviewing stand. He knows, that though their numbers are few, they are every bit as loyal as he is to the Emperor, and will keep this native rabble in check!
The Colonel, however, was not available for comment. Rather than stare at the smug face of Cestus, he is off, supervising the delivery of BIG GUNS, fresh from the manufactorum.
As a side note, you can find a mini-WIP of me painting these, here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/343246.page.

Wow, love the hellhound conversion, any chance you'll tell us how you made the turret?

The Great Imperial Guard Project @ 2011/02/02 18:01:29

Post by: CATACLYSMUS

No Prob! I build this back in the days when the turret and bits for the hellhound were still made of Pewter. I didn't want to spend the money on a separate kit, and had an extra chimera handy, so I built the chimera, converted the turret with a bunch of little fuel tanks and a heavy flamer, filed off the lasgun mounts on the hull, and added a bunch of barrels to it. With an odd and end there, that's pretty much it.

With the Hydra taking its place on the line, ready to crawl all over those pesky fliers, Colonel Cannonade's Force is ready! However, all is not finished. The good colonel has been talking quite effectively with the Governor's command, and at his request, another local hero is coming to join the Taskforce! Out of interest (and I don't mind if you don't want to answer) how much do you charge for painting an army like this to this standard? You can PM me if you want or you might see it as advertising your services!?

Nice! Every time I look at Imperial Guard tanks, especially the Forge World stuff, I have a serious urge to collect an IG force...now that would certainly make my wallet hate me.

Actually, this is my full-time job. I am doing this as spec to sell on ebay, but I also have a couple commissions going. (Nowhere near this size, but there you are) I usually spend about 9-10 hours a day painting and doing biz.
And now!!!! Major Fracas has directed his first platoon onto the field!
This brings the total to: 4120 I think I'm seeing the downhill slope of this!
@Reaper-Man: PM Sent

Very Good, very good. It looks like my IG Meat shields are progressing nicely.

Its too bad that all those tanks are going to get blown up by the Equus Proditor

Commisar Cestus is beside himself! When Major Fracas arrived, ALSO looking very similar to another hero of the Imperium, the good Commisar flipped his lid. Marching up to Fracas' Russ, he demanded to know why even his SCAR was almost a perfect duplicate of the aforementioned hero!
In response, the Major made a small gesture with his hand, and the second platoon of Leman Russes trundled onto the parade field.
The platoon command tank made a slight 'miscalculation' in its drive path, and 'accidentally' bumped against the good commisar, crushing his power fist!
As the commissar made preparations to 'Find Wanting' the tank commander, the second Leman Russ, following the first, also 'accidentally' bumped into the good commissar, smashing his bolt pistol!
Needless to say, the good commissar stormed off to the munitorum to file an official report, and to replace his armament. Time will tell when the showdown will come...

Boy you had better instill some gdamn discipline in the ranks of your minions. Your allies have foreseen many failed morale saves on account of fragile egos.

That being said, I need to see the overall army

I AM a bit worried about discipline. My whole army might be paralyzed with laughter when they see the ranks of fairy coneheads prancing across the field. Just make sure you point your pointies downrange, and brightlance those titans.

To everyone else, I apologise sincerely for the distraction my minion is causing on this thread. He is simply excited about the massive amount of pwning we will be doing at the Apoc game.

Tomorrow, the final Russes...

I spy a Hydra Flak Tank. That's something you don't see often enough. I wish there were a way to make one that was easy and struck my fancy...
Sigh...
I'll have to make one the hard way. I just think the interceptor turret looks sorta silly.

Thanks for squeezing my two seer councils in ahead of your baneblades.

Boy you have 2.5 days to finish two baneblades and a whole aegis line

If you don't get it done, the emperor will be displeased - more so than he already is with you

And now.... DONE! In less than 6 weeks, 7k points!!! Just in time, too. My next post will be more details on the battle in which this force will be taking part, as well as the wrap-up of the little story. Also, following the game, I will be providing ebay links to where I am selling this mammajamma!
