Why am I so creepy?  @ 2011/02/13 10:06:33

Post by: Vasarto

I don't get it? I try and act normal, Try and act like a nice person. I have decent Social Skills and introduce myself properly when I meet new people. I guess I do dress a little differently than anyone else but I just have a different sense of style that's all. Love my fedora and trench coat during winter etc. For some reason unknown to me I just come off as that really creepy guy who needs to stop being so creepy!

I dunno, At first It didn't bother me but now...Its kinda starting too. I have tried hard to work on this but I am thinking its just useless.
I mean just today, I went out to a event hosted by "The Donkey Show" guys in Medford Oregon. They were doing some events and stuff that were pretty fun.
I even joined in on one of them. Shook hands with a couple of the guys. Even a few friends of mine whom know the guys pretty well enough were talking to them and all.
As we were all leaving one of them had the gull to tell me to stop being so creepy.

AGAIN WITH THE CREEPY. I am pretty sure I did not act differently than anyone else. I joined in on an activity that I would otherwise not had done before, which I had a lot of fun with and no one else really seemed to look at me weird.

I get many people starring at me constantly for the past several years. I dont talk to myself or act strange. I am certainly not ugly or walk funny.
Yet people insist on taking one look at me and Giving me the "way too creepy label" Its starting to become a real bummer. I mean, I got tons of friends and people who know me but that is only because more or less at one point. Most of them were put into a position where they had to spend time actually talking to me. But it seems that every girl who I ever see does this thing where I seem to be Transparent. They look through me, Never actually seeing me but looking directly through me. Guys just see some creepy fella etc.

I don't think I am overly polite or rude or anything and if someone does not seem to like me I stay away. So...I dunno. I just do not get it. Even If I knew the answer I do not think its something that can be fixed.

Is there anyone out there or a place out there with other creepy people like me? I am starting to think that In order to find places where there are people I can connect with or a girl for that matter that I could make any kind of connections with. It would be finding someone or somewhere the people are as creepy as I am.

Are you overly earnest? Most people like to keep conversation light and breezy, and if you try to get too deep it can come off as intense, which in turn can push many people's 'creepy' button.

Judging by your post, that would be my best guess. You don't know anyone here, yet your willing to bare your soul. If you extended that to your real life, and you were talking to me (for the sake of argument), I'd be like 'uh, why's this guy giving me his life story?'.

Just my opinion, feel free to disregard.

Albatross is probably correct, but just in case, make sure you dont have a monobrow as that makes anybody creepy:

To be fair though Lego, the dude in your top picture would probably still be creepy if he had plucked eyebrows.

More so, if anything.

Post by: legoburner

Yeah but the plucked eyebrows would take it down a notch enough that I'd be willing to get in his taxi at least.

Spat out my tea, thanks! But I now have a bench mark level with which to assess future taxi drivers!

Cheerful
Not cheerful - The standard.
Rapey - Not cheerful - You gotta gets home but phone ahead.
Rapey - and cheerful - Avoid at all costs!

back top the OP I also agree with Alby - you may come over as being too intense and overbearing. Maybe take a deep breath and ask your true friends how you come across to other people.

Post by: Albatross

Funnily enough, a cheerful taxi-driving rapist (convicted and everything...) used to come into my old work on a regular basis. Now he WAS creepy. The OP just sounds like the travails of a teenager.

And so, the circle is complete.

It might help to change your image - get rid of the trench coat and fedora and get a T-shirt (or shirt).

Sometimes people see what is on the outside and make assumptions.

Just make jokes and don't try too hard, new friends don't want to talk about the deep and meaningful.

I'd go take a class on communication and public speaking.

If you are earnest about have people see and look at you, these classes help point out things not to do to people.

And try not to substitute it with the internet. For instance, making a thread on a wargamming website asking for advice on how not to be creepy.

Why am I so creepy?  @ 2011/02/13 13:15:50

Post by: MeanGreenStompa

I'd suspect 2 things.

Firstly I agree with the above comments, the unusual openness and the intense depth of the conversation is probably too much for an ice breaker. Also, yeah, lose the trenchcoat and hat. Get yourself some nondescript clothes or if you wish to retain individuality, go with some harmless or light humour Tshirts or hoodies, sites like 'thinkgeek' may help there.

Secondly, I suspect that given your open post here and you seeking advice, this is something that troubles you. This can lead to a lack of confidence and coming across as a bit desperate or nervous or uncomfortable and that's leading you into a self fulfilling prophecy of your discomfort and paranoia about being unwelcome coming across as 'creepy' behaviour.

Folks like light hearted and chillaxed people. Women are attracted to it, men find it less threatening. As a deep and intense person myself, with a deadpan dry sense of humour, I can sympathise with your situation a fair bit. I don't always find it easy on first introductions with people, I find trivial conversation fairly difficult to maintain because it doesn't interest me. Ive encountered even more difficulty with this since moving to the states as folks here get deadpan humour even less than brits.

Short answer I'd suggest is some relaxation techniques, some confidence classes or something like that, change your wardrobe out and dismiss your expectations of people. Also don't over-analyse each social encounter.

I try and act normal, Try and act like a nice person.

Stop trying and just be. If you're forcing a smile or humour or friendliness it's about the worst thing in the world.

As to the guy that called you creepy, he was a gakker, forget it. Reassure yourself that his need to put others down probably stems from his mother being used as a mattress by all his chums...

Why am I so creepy?  @ 2011/02/13 13:36:28

Post by: Ribon Fox

MeanGreenStompa. For the use of the word "chillaxed" you are here by found one internet point.

To the OP, you'll get used to it. I my self say very little to the point were a nod and a "hmm" is convosation for me. Note; I'm considerd a freak and a werido but hay the world would be a dull place indeed with out us freaks

Soon you will find out that it matters not what others think of you. Just become the silent type that nods and says "really" "maybe" "cool" "Nice" and the "Yes" and "No". With just the use of these six words you can have a full convosation and let the other person do all the talking. People like talking about them self so let them

As for clothing "Meh", those that make a snap dission on what you wear are probably not worth knowing (and I say that with a boat load of experience).

Talk a public speaking class. watch people as they talk. Always make sure to put your best face forward. Learn to tell a joke. Pick up on ques people give with their face voice. learn how to use charm and wit.

I worked with a guy named Chuck once that had the same problem. He was nice enough after you got to know him, but first impressions he was just plain ol creepy. He too wore a trench coat w/headrag and was just creepy. He swore he wasnt acting out of place, but he would just stare at people, and that is creepy to others. If you want to talk to them, say something, say hello of hey or something, dont just eye rape strangers.

He too would just talk to openly and ask to many personal questions right off the bat, hell I knew him for awhile and he would STILL do stuff like that. I would have to tell him "hey man, thats a bit personal to ask people" I mean, if we were good friends it wouldnt of been odd, but we just worked together. He didnt mean anything by it, but it was still off putting.

Maybe your doing those things and not even knowing it.

Post by: halonachos

Staring into space when not talking to someone or doing something is incredibly creepy, more so when the space you're staring at is in the general direction of someone else.

If you try to be too friendly then people will think you're a creep. If you're in an elevator and someone else walks in it is perfectly acceptable to say "Good morning, some weather huh?"

But if you decided to shake hands and introduce yourself it gets a little wierd, context is everything.

Avoid trenchcoats and wear your fedora with matching clothes. If you have on blue jeans and a T-shirt a fedora is not the right type of hat for you, if you were wearing pleated pants, a button up shirt, and a black vest a fedora is the right thing to wear. Social norms tend to avoid people wearing black trenchcoats, tan ones are okay when it it raining because detectives and spys wear tan trenchcoats in popular media, black ones are worn by shooters.

Wearing mismatching clothes is another issue because it makes it seem like you're a dirty person or somebody who doesn't care about themself if your clothes don't match.

Other than that go with what Alby was saying.

That old bit about "better to keep your mouth shut and let people guess you're stupid than to open your mouth and prove it" rings true. Oversharing is a big turn off.

A little story that might provide another perspective, there used to be a guy that would come in to the Starbucks I went to. He would always have a different hat (usually fedoras) and a long coat. The girl I was dating at the time and I would refer to him as "the douchebag" because of his douchey hats and how he would act. He'd sit down by himself but fairly near people then pull out three books, read maybe one or two pages, and start "spying" on people near him as though he were going to start a conversation. People would purposely avoid him and come to find later he had asked out nearly ever girl that worked at that Starbucks. Every once in a while he'd be with a big group of people, but he always sat on the outside ring of the group off to the side.

The big lesson is be self-aware. Be willing to be completely honest with yourself. Only say something if it serves a purpose and look at yourself in a mirror to see if you look ridiculous or not. Buy a new outfit and ask a sales person to help you pick it out, because even if you normally wouldn't wear those clothes, you'll be better off than you are now and you'll grow into it. Also make sure your hygiene is up to date (are your teeth clean and nails trimmed or is your hair greasy?). A little bit of personal attention goes a very long way.

I get the impression that modern girls label ANY unwanted attention 'creepy' it is an easy way to get a guy to back off, there is certainly no simple repost to the creepy line. I am always wary of just approaching women point blank for this very reason. You have to have a reason to talk to them besides 'mmmm i bet your hair smells like lavender'. Prime examples, muscle in on the girl your mate is hitting on if he is obviously failing, you must judge this well though (I have never misjudged it) otherwise you can come off super creepy. Another example is gentle smack talking e.g. if they have a crap band T -shirt tell 'em what you think of the band, comment on the unhealthyness of their shopping basket etc. The least you will get is a nice smile or a jokey 'eff off!', women's smiles power a successful smoothey like me...

EDIT: NEVER EVER EVER wear Geek slogan t-shirts they are the antithesis of sex and are KRYPTONITE to a ladies libido. T-shirts with colourful pictures however are good, they are a simple stylish accent to an outfit requiring minimal effort.

I've made this point several times and completely agree. If you can't sleep because the clowns will eat you or the voices in your head say they don't like her, she's likely to dismiss you quickly.

Get yourself a tie-dye t-shirt. Nothing says relaxed and laid back more than tie-dye.

And a tie-dyed trench coat would make you the most laid back dude on earth.

Don't try and act like a normal person. There is no such thing as normal. You do not want to be normal. Act like you, except don't drag on things longer than they should. For example. Say "hello _____ and hows it going." If they say like a couple of sentences. Just say "Alrighty, nice talking to you, and good to see ya." But make sure they still want to speak you can tell this by their tone of voice. just say hello to people and keep the stuff short.

Ummm....Tie Die?

NO! I have worn black since Jr.High and I am 25 now.
A few other stuff mixed in but NOT die dye.

I think my problem isn't conversation its gotta be that I am doing something else. I guess it could be the way I dress but even in summer time when I dress for warm weather people still think I am creepy.

Its a problem that has been around for a few years and probably a lot longer than that....just that I wasn't aware of it.

Tl;dr, you don't understand why people think you're creepy?

Tell people you smoke pot or something. People who smoke pot can't possibly be creepy. You don't even have to smoke, just tell people you do.

If that's not your style, try to be more shy. Or reserved. I don't even know you, but I'm pretty sure we're similar people, and playing shy usually makes it easier to be 'chill'

Meh, I've learned to embrace the creepy...life is more interesting that way.

Yeah I agree, I think everyone should give it a try once in a while.

Proper fedora (the one infront)

Improper fedora

Proper way to rock a fedora and a long coat at the same time

Also acceptable

I'm kidding btw, wearing a fedora and a trech coat was ment to look creepy.

Ditch them in favor of jeans and polo shirts.

They see through me like I am transparent. I mean sure I might find someone at a point but its getting rather bothersome to hear
people call me creepy so often.

At the risk of sounding like Dr.Phil here....

If you have a crap self image and think of yourself as "creepy" or a "looser",then other people will as well.
If you carry yourself with confidence and dignity, this will be what others pick up on.
Fedoras and trench coats can be taken off or put on...but the contents you carry inside you shows through regardless...

...And,not to be harsh...but eating three boxes of candy is no way of coping with loneliness.

Okay, a couple of things.

First, it's not 1940, ditch the trenchcoat and fedora. Your appearance says a lot about who you are, and because humans are such visual creatures if you're conforming to the perceived norms you're going to come off creepy. For example, by wearing a trenchcoat you're saying, "I'm naked under this" or "I have a gun hidden under here." I understand liking black, I wear quite a bit of black as well, but don't wear it exclusively. This ties in to your appearance telling your personality, the females are going to judge you by how you look initially, and if they see all black all the time they think you're boring.

Hygiene and cleanliness are also incredibly important. If you've got long, scraggly hair, cut that stuff. Nothing says creepy like someone with long, unkempt hair in a trenchcoat. People, in general, tend to react better to you when you've got short hair, are well-groomed, and smell good. Nothing is more likely to drive people away than an unfamiliar odor. You don't have to smell bad, but you can smell strange and that would be enough.

If you want girls to like you, be light-hearted, confident, and dismissive. Girls hate to hear about how many problems you have, generally they like to talk about themselves and as the man you're supposed to listen and be supportive as well as solve your problems on your own time. Be confident, even if you don't feel it. I've struggled with this in the past, but it's true that women have a vagina and they don't need another one.

Work on these things. I found the best place to do it is to go out to the bar with a couple friends and talk to people. You don't even have to hit on the women, just talk to them. Become a regular and the bartender will start introducing you and your group to other groups of people, and work it from there.

Overall I agree with Walrus, particularly on hygiene..shower shower shower...can't stress it enough to some people.
On dress style..Me,personally I'd pass on the Fedora/Trench coat combo, worked for Humphrey Bogart...but not so much now,but if you want to dress "outside the norm" fine...just insure your clothes aren't smelly and look good on you,and keep in mind that certain styles will in some cases "limit" the types of women your going to atract...not always a bad thing.
Still,more than anything...confidence is key.

So I wear Hawaiian shirts.

The only thing I can really recommend is that you just be yourself. Worst comes to worst, you aren't accepted and live the life of a hermit. Best case scenario, you find some guys to play fantasy football with and have a nice american life

Well buddy, ignore their ribbing and internet jokes. Be yourself, stay upbeat, and maybe cool your jets a bit. Perhaps you're too outgoing in today's jaded society. I know I'm contradicting myself, but try being a little shy? No, that's horrible advice. Never mind. Be yourself. Get rid of any facial hair. Be yourself. Eventually you'll find other like minded people, or current people will get the message and accept you for who you are.

Depends on the coat, the man, the location, and the weather. Mistcoats or penny coats are better alternatives for all but the worst conditions. Trenchcoats have a (deserved) bad reputation for being worn by social misfits.

@OP: I completely sympathize with you! I really have a hard time not be earnest about everything, though I have gotten better at starting friendly conversations. I just get rid of the excess intensity in me by writing poems, which really helps BTW. Of course, it does NOT help when I am asked where I go to school, and I respond by saying I am homeschooled. Seriously, the conversation goes from going really well to me be treated like I am carrying the plague or something. Of course, I live in the heart of the mid-west, and people tend to be really intolerant...

Asking gamers how to not be "creepy" is like asking alcoholics how to not drink: not the best idea (especially on an internet forum which tends to bring out the self-titled comedians and internet cool guys) ever...

Seriously, I think your issue might be mild to moderate depression. Perhaps call a hotline or seek out a local therapist for advice.

This comment honestly makes me wonder,do "gamers" really have such a low opinion of their fellow "gamers"?
I'm honestly not attempting to troll here...I've pondered this for a few years and it still perplexes me when I see comments like "asking gamers for advice about women/not being creepy/any normal social activity/etc,is a waste of time."
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact I didn't discover "Wargames" until I was 30 that this viewpoint seems ...counterproductive to me...but I honestly don't get why the attitude that "gamer=socially incompetent goof" seems to be so strongly held by some "gamers".

You have a thread in which an individual exhibits and expresses some identifiable level of emtional distress and what is a pretty clear call for help and half the responses are lame jokes and jabs at his expense. Do the math.

IF this guy truely is bothered by events in his life and is experiencing some level of mental/emotional anguish as a result then yes he needs to seek the advice of qualified providers, not subject himself to the witticisms of internet cool guys that are having as much fun mocking and dismissing him as offering any sincere advice.

True...but after receiving some,IMO,fairly sound advice, the OP went on to comment that he couldn't be bothered to change some of the habits he felt made other individuals view him as "creepy".
So...is it a genuine search for advice? or a "Hey..feel sorry for me" thing?

And...that is in a single thread,my overall point was that I've noticed a fair amount of " loathing of gamers by gamers" over many threads on many forums.

As much fun as you seem to have being pedantic, let's get at the root intention of your original statement. You were saying that this forum isn't a good place to look for advice because people make "lame jokes" and whatnot. IME RPGs and wargamers still attract socially awkward guys who want a hobby where they can exercise their brains (whether or not they're particularly intelligent).

Most of the guys I know and associate with who play GW games are grown adults with families, jobs, and average or above social skills, though. That may in part be because I'm getting older, and those are the guys I hang out with.

"Gamer" is becoming an almost meaningless term as a category, since it's been co-opted by people who play videogames. Which is getting to be everyone.

Where do you do most of your gaming, Shuma? Because I think that plays a part, at least, it does here. Generally, I find GW stores to be absolutely toppers with a colourful (and fragrant) array of freaks. I made the mistake of playing there a couple of times. Never again. Ye gods.... the smell.

On the flipside of that, I went to a Dakka UK meet-up a few months ago and everyone was just... normal. And it's not like these guys aren't dedicated gamers - we're talking about men who traveled a couple of hundred miles to play man-dollies in the home of GW, Warhammer World. I'm guessing the normal folks just play at home with their mates, or in a small local gaming club.

YMMV, as ever.

I started off as a nerd. It was really the only thing I looked forward to every day, be it video or board games at first then CCGs and RPing when no adults were around (since it's evil and all). From there I learned to be socially active and have grown into a very social being, so the games aren't the root of the problem IMO. There are awkward people in other hobbies, I just think lots of other hobbies tend to be more social.

I think good advice is good advice regardless of source, and I haven't seen a high level of jeering here in particular. I know a joke can sometimes make the truth easier to swallow, so as long as it's not hate speech I think it's fine. I do agree about the depression though and I'm surprised only two of us have suggested it.

On the subject of gamers, me and my two main gaming buddies are both normal, but there are a lot of weirdos running around. Guys with long fingernails (gag), hair past their shoulders, massive guts, just creepy...

The ponytails are what gets me.

Gaming stores always seem to have an extremely high concentration of men with ponytails.

It depends on the person, really. Did they grow their hair into a stately mane like Mannahnin? Then its not a problem.

Is it a greasy wad of stinky hair tied back with a bit of butcher's twine because getting it cut takes up too much WoW time? That's a problem.

I don't think I've ever seen a male ponytail that wasn't nasty.

Steven Segal has a ponytail.

There's a difference between being "Creepy nasty" and simply not " Conforming to the general Norm" though, someone with long hair...that's CLEAN,dressed in black, wearing a band t-shirt or what have you ,doesn't IMO qualify as "Creepy nasty",particularly if their mannerisms are those of the "average" guy.
For me "Creepy Nasty" is defined by smelly, sullen, reclusive individuals who seem incapable of carrying on a conversation about anything other than their little plastic men.

I don't think that having a well-adjusted gaming group is necessarily either of those things.

Most places I've been seem to be like any other group of guys that gather to do something; the majority are more or less average dudes with a couple of wingnuts sprinkled in to make it more interesting. Unless you're talking about Flames of War. Those cats are strange.

Maybe the east coast of the U.S. is more worse for wear then the rest of the country.

So fething true. One of the reasons why I never actually set foot into GW stores.

Considering the overweight or long haired as creepy must leave you very few people to interact with.

Not really, and I can always diet, you however will be you for life, so I guess that makes your mother sad.

I'm sure she'd chime in here but her mouth is probably full.

There are no GW stores in my state, but the described situation pretty much covers every FLGS I've ever been in anyway.

1) You should work on your reading comprehension
2) You should stop being so defensive about your weight on internet forums to people you don't even know
3) Remove stick from butt and calm down

But the fact I made you e-rage for no reason makes me warm and fuzzy inside.

See here's where I disagree with you. There's this lovely guy who comes every day at 9.00 to my local GW, and stays there until 1.00 before abruptly leaving. He's got a bit of a BO problem, not gonna lie, he's a bit of a recluse, and he can't make eye contact, unless he's chatting about his miniatures. Guess what? He's autistic. So from my experience, I'd say a creepy nasty guy would be someone who cares too much about their models, or if they rage like a pit bull on 'roids when they lose a game.

That is weird. I don't think other mannerisms really should be taken into account, you do't know their background, and you don't know why they're acting the way they are.

Woah, woah, woah. I describe a certain type of gamer that has long, scraggly, unkempt hair, inch long fingernails (yellowed too), and a huge gut and MGS jumps down by throat and insults my mother because he's presumably overweight, jumps to the conclusion that I'm insulting 'large' gamers and I'm the one whining?

I don't give a flying feth how much you weigh, but there is no excuse not to be clean. I've had shoulder length hair before and I washed and conditioned that mess at least once a day because it was necessary and if you have longer hair you have to maintain it. Trimming your nails takes a minute and most to do and doesn't even even need to be done a daily basis.

Mayhap certain people should not take statements out of context and assume the whole world is aligned against them.

Well...I certainly wasn't including people with Autism into my "equation"...but..point taken my friend.
Perhaps the fact that 95% of my games take place at homes, among a small group ,prevents me from fully appreciating the "FLGS creepy factor"...however,when I am in the stores most of the people there seem a decent enough group, sure there are some that make your eyes water as you pass them or make you believe they wouldn't know what to do with a woman if one dropped from the sky into their lap,but by and large most seem like "regular guys".

So, after reading 7 pages, here's my summary of this thread:

1) Guy posts saying he creeps people out and isn't sure why
2) Responses make wild assumptions about his personality, appearance and hygiene
3) Everyone eventually settles on "be more laid back" and "shower more"
4) OP responds That's too much work, I regret making this thread.
5) Thread immediately dissolves into gamers yelling at gamers about their appearance
6) Personal attacks commence

I don't think the OP was intentionally trying to troll, but he's done an excellent job of accidentally trolling.

Kudos!

Amaya,
You listed several traits, including having long hair and being overweight as contributing to this individuals negative features. Therefore we can construe that you view these two features as undesirable and open to ridicule or disgust.

How else was it supposed to be viewed?

Now you're saying you don't care about people's weight or hair.

Mayhap certain people should construct their posts with a little more forethought and not attempt frail defence of their mistakes when they make them. There is no weakness in just apologising for your poorly worded statement.
