Today while filling out my tons of online college surveys, I wanted a more 'professional' looking email with my name, so I decided to go make one.
I tried the obvious FirstnameLastname@yahoo, and it failed. Reasonable. Tried it again with an underscore in between. Also taken. Then, I Tried FirstnameMiddlename with and without a underscore. Both failed. I was getting pretty angry. I tired different combos and mixes with periods etc, and after about the 20th time of it failing and me having to retype my dumb password, I RAGED and punched my monitor, before standing up and yelling (the non word-filtered version of) FETH! and walking around, yelling obscenities and ended up finishing of my slew of swears with GOD DAMN IT!
I hate having people with the same name as me.
So Dakka, how do you feel knowing that there are people with the same name as you?
(for those interested, MiddlenameLastname was taken, but when I put the underscore, it worked. Fething finally...)
(PS. in case you couldn't gather, I'm not sharing my first, last, and middle names )
I myself share the name of a famous singer,so I've dealt with comments my whole life...no big deal...I simply go by my middle name.
I'm usually calm, but once I get tipped over the edge, a brief but massive surge of rage occurs. Thankfully, I have never hurt myself or anyone/thing else because of it
edit: except warhammer models. Oh God, have I taken it out on a model for not gluing. Usually, I just rip off the pieces where I glued them and wait for them to dry and try again, but when I first got into warhammer, when I tried to glue necrons...well, this one warrior wouldn't stay together. I raged and coved him with superglue. he looked funny)
I was annoyed with steam when I found Wizard12 was taken. It forced me to use my older online name Microwizard (don't laugh, I was like 7).
This isn't as annoying as having the school server hate me. When I try to put in a new password, it tells me I can't use a password that has been used three times previous. OK I say... 7 passwords in and I can't go back to my normal ones. I'm stuck on dark***** (asterisks hide the last word, I just know you guys want to hack the account and steal small amounts of work from my school account )

Bing Fitzz Crosby?
Not exactly.
The story behind the name "Fitzz" is buried somewhere in this Forum...
My Birth Name is that of a famous singer..First and last...I've gone by my Middle name since I was very young though.

If I find out I registered any of those ones I tried, I will be SO pissed....

I've gone by my middle name since, well, forever. Coincidence that my middle name with last name worked? hmm....

It's Michael Bolton, isn't it?
Michael Bolton: Yeah, well, at least your name isn't Michael Bolton.
Samir: You know, there's nothing wrong with that name.
Michael Bolton: There *was* nothing wrong with it... until I was about twelve years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys.
Samir: Hmm... well, why don't you just go by Mike instead of Michael?
Michael Bolton: No way! Why should I change? He's the one who sucks.

No ..it's not Michael Bolton...I believe I'd weep if it were.
Here's a hint....when people discover my "Real" Name...they inevitably ask me how I feel.
I've run into a fair few other Steve Collis' on the internet and they all seem pretty cool. Most of them are tons more successful than me and live in the UK. Cannerus is typically me, with the only exception being a few crappy MMO players that pop up on Google. It's interesting how much pops up for it though
I have a completely unique name (at least that I've found).
Unfortunately, my last name is a verb (and a noun), and the combination of firstname+verb is pretty common. So, I'm rather hard to find by Googling. As my professional life has progressed, I've actually managed to get references to me on the first page of returns from Google. I'm up to 2 of the top 10!
To the OP:
If you're looking for a professional email address, don't use yahoo. Use gmail. I know it may sound judgmental and dumb, but the domain your email address is from makes quite a first impression.
Yahoo says "I was hip and cool 10 years ago when I got this email. But, I haven't bothered to update anything since then. I'm not in the tech industry, my webpage looks like it was designed in CS 101, and don't expect timely email responses as my phone doesn't get email."
AOL says "I signed up for this internet thing, but couldn't figure out which wire goes where. After my grandson came over and fixed it for me, I got this email address. I'm not aware you can change these things."
Hotmail says "My mommy and daddy got AOL, but I wanted my own email! Isn't N'Sync the best?"
Gmail says "I'm hip and cool. I believe in efficiency and am familiar with the Web 2.0"
Edit:
NOOOOOO!!!!!!! I was looking through other Google hits on myself and discovered there's another one of me living in Mississippi!
I know your rage well OP. I use this name for most things except Xbox Live where every name in the world is already taken including Kamikaze Canuck and all variations. Damn you Microsoft!
You realize theres like 7 billion people on the planet, your bound to have a few with your name.
Just try a more professional email that doesnt have your name. Im sure you can think of something better then IPWNEDYOU or BIGBALLZMCGEE or something along that line.
Hmm... if this ever happened to me, I would have bigger issues to worry about, considering that there are only about 3 people left on the planet that have my last name (to my knowledge), and none of them share my first name.
Ive come close. I worked with a guy named Brandon Lee *insert random last name* and mine is Brandon Lee *insert beared name of awesomeness* they would mix our checks up all the friggin time.
But there was a weather man some years ago that had my full name, but his last name was spelled a little differently, but pronounced the same way. That was a fun moment
I myself share the name of a famous singer,so I've dealt with comments my whole life...no big deal...I simply go by my middle name.
So do I, a very famous celebrity shares my name. I still use my first name.
Don't get many ill comments though. Though I do get assumptions that I have.
My hotmail WAS my real name, but after I killed it, some yank pinched it. Probably because his name is the more common spelling (and it's also common to drop letters to get one that you can use). My dad chose our surname by dropping that redundant letter when he legally changed his name from the Hungarian unpronounceable wheelbarrow*. My first and second names are rather common though. Being the names of two English kings.
My surname is not the common one. With the repetition of a single letter, though, it can be - and that is the Wife's surname.
*it's a running joke with foreign names. When I was at school (predominantly anglo) and the other children of migrants showed up (my dad changed his name to better blend in and assimilate), we had all sorts of shorthand for their surnames. Greek surnames were commonly "Alphabetopolous", Polish, Czech and Hungarian were often "Wheelbarrow". Later, when the geekiest of us did computer class, "alphabetopolous" became "quertyopolous". We had an Armenian kid in the class too. His nickname was "keyboard, row three-ian." (asdfghjkl-ian). Mine was "vanilla w*g" (because my dad turned his back on his 'heritage' - he was orphaned by WW2).
I wouldnt say I was 100% certain but given the evidence so far, I can be reasonably certain there is no-one in the world with the same name or same spelt name as mine.
Case in point - both my hotmail (.com not a regional .co.uk one) and gmail accounts are first name surname @ domain.com - no need for numbers here, none of that joebloggs77@hotmail guff!
I know that is hardly conclusive proof but the same is true for any situation where I have to choose a username - I can always be unique using my real name!
I was annoyed when my name was taken on gmail back when it was still an invite only beta. Though it was the diminuative form, rather than my full name.
I imagine that they are all taken now though (my name is not hugely common, but it is not exactly rare).
Do any of you ever notice that people who share your name, seems to be somewhat like you?
That Brandon fella I worked with, we got along very nicely, because we both liked the same music, were pretty laid back, talked about funny scifi stuff and why zombies are the better "monster movie" badguys. He even had a beard! A wee one, but a beard none the less
Even that weather man was pretty chill. Is this just a Brandon trait or what?

Altogether, I doubt anyone has my name either, they'd need to match my first name, both my middle names in the right order and my last name; the first three are easy enough on their own, but when out with my last name it reheally narrows it down.

Not really an issue for me as I use my RPG characters as email on the Net.
Although if I do search on google for me, (just first and last name) I'm the top five entries, so yeah, don't think many share my name.
Probably helps my dad went and picked the Cornish version by accident spelling wise, instead of the Welsh, plus its an old, not really used name anyways, combined with a Welsh surname.

In a similar vein, I have yet to meet anyone other than my family who can pronounce and/or spell my last name correctly without help.
Seriously?
Try saying my last name.
It's Felsenthal.
Spoiler:
Fell-sent-thall
That is rather easy for a german, because it is german (and means rock valley in english).
My name is completely unique, too. There are maybe ten families in the world with my last name, and most of them live in the USA, only two live in germany. In addition, I have my email at the domain of a friend, so it is completely unique.
My name is common in Wisconsin and Scandinavia, but since I don't live there I've never even met another person with my same first name or anyone outside my family with the exact same surname.
I looked up my last name online and found it's Coat of Arms.
Apparently I'm Scottish.
Something of interest. Due to the different spellings of many different names, there could be someone with a different last name than you, but still is a descendant of the same family.
But there must be thousands of us now.
Oh by the way, my last name is the 11,195th most common.
I have a fairly unique last name. That said, we managed to move in across the street from a family with the exact same name, who are completely unrelated.
Also, at my work, I am one of five people called Dan. It's a fair bet that there will be at least two of us on shift at any given moment. Fun times.
Interesting according to 192.com (British site, based around Electoral data, birth, marriage and telephone book entries) I'm the only combination of my first and last name in the UK.
My middle brother is equally blessed, while my youngest shares his with 34 others.
I have to go 4 or 5 pages deep to get another result on Google for my name that isn't me. Going back about nine pages, there's maybe 6-10 links which aren't me, and all but about two of those are only a last or first name match; not both.
Well, I googled my name, and there are maybe 2 or 3 other people with it. Didn't find myself though, just some random Facebook pages. Most were people who had friended the same guy.
Also there was a gay porn star with a name very similar to my own. Weird.
There are quite a few of me on various social networks, I'm being a casket bearer in Nebraska, I run track & field at a high school, own a house for sale in St. Louis, am a math fair winner, one that's actually me on page two of the search, am a soccer player, and run a church. That's mostly what's on the first two pages of the Google search.

Are they allowed to use that information? I've just found my whole close family and who we live with just at the press of a button (although the information is outdated). That is hellishly scary, and I can only imagine what people can find out just from that.
Despite having a rather err...Scottish sounding forename, I don't know of many people who go by it, least other than overhearing it every now and then. Anyhow I go by my forename, mother maiden name, and sirname, which other than being an anagram for a pornographic mag here as was pointed out to me one night a while back by a drunken mate, I doubt there's another person that goes by my name (even without the maiden name crap)...as they'd have already suffered an unfortunate accidently involving a spatula. Meh, I haven't had the problem of having a friend with the same forename as me, or found anyone on the web either, so it doesn't really bother me, and even if it there was its just a little thing, who's to care. Meh, spam that person to hell with name twins jokes if you want, or just shrug your shoulder and smirk a little before sticking a random number at the end of your email like everyone else if its so bothersome. ^^

I must admit I raised an eyebrow, it's listing folks living with me, who never have, but where school friends, that was a little worrying.
There are quite a lot of us - as I found when I decided to add them all on facebook. Most Ryan Magees seemed to find it charming and irreverent, which was what I was going for.
@Fitzz/Orlanth - Michael Jackson. Common name for a famous dude to have. That's my guess.
@Dogma - Have you ever considered adding ': A New Hope' to the end of your name?
I did a google search, and two of the top 3 results are me. Of course, a few days ago I got a random facebook message from some guy up in Wisconsin who shared my name....I was kinda freaked out.
I think my name is much more common in Germany than stateside though.

I only found one guy on Facebook with the same name as me. He about my age too.
After reading that though, I think I will friend him.
Googled my name and surname. Only myself and one guy who rents chambers by the hour
So i don't have a problem with people having the same name like me. What i do
find anying is that everyone spells it wrong! and my name only excists out of three letters.
And English speaking people always like to pronounce my name like Seal. I'm not a Seal, for crying out loud!

Nope ..not Michael Jackson ..although the singer whose name I share does have some things in common with "The King of Pop",Including a history with Motown .and being satirized by Eddie Murphy.

I never have this problem... my name (being mixed from different European ethnicities) is the only one that I know of in the US... and I think there's another in Europe, somewhere. SO yeah, my email is just first name, last name. I couldn't do middle name, as it is (and I will tell you this) incredibly boring. It's Smith.
