^Nice ..I've seen pics of your's before.....
Reason why I'm building such alot of scratch built vehicles is the fact that the real thing costs more than an arm & a leg over here.....eg: normal Land Raider = £60 ( when converted from our Rand currentcy )
^This Land Raider of mine cost me £5 including paint

Post by: Dark
Same here, since the postal office works in shady and dodgy ways you want ALL you get from a foreign country to be trackable and not handed by them, and that means FedEx, which costs the same as a Rhino.
Finally, the customs office bites a 52% of the total ammount of the goods + shipping, so a $35 Rhino ends costing me $106.4, which is 1/3 of the average monthly payment here.

I like the Orc stuff nice and neat with good lines, plastic-card is such a great thing ain't it
The Gobsmasha realy stand out realy effective use of wear and tear on the plates of armor, and those big wheels look perfect for running over stuff.
I think the grot tanks will look awesome with that same treatment ( I may have to build me a few myself)
And the Gargant is very WAAAAGH! keep it up
for SpDDmN
What materials do you use in your scratch build, because I am very impressed with your methodical approach to it, taking things a step at a time and such.
(Nevermind the above duh! You stated your materials at the head of the thread), you have acheived some very impressive results for the materials you have used, if possible you should see if you can locate some sheet plastic to try your talents on, sometimes chain resturants ( such as Mcdonalds) will throw out their advertisement boards ( the ones that are lit up on the menu) and those are actually pretty high quality plastic.... just some food for thought.

OMG "OLD SCHOOL THUNDERHAWK" Well that just pisses all over what alot of people have produced. It looks awesome exactly like a scaled up version of the old Epic One.. Brilliant... The super aerodynamic Brick..
For the Tau super heavy tank i would buy a 1/72 model of an ISRAELI Merkava Tank and then do a mega conversion..
If I manage to get hold of one of the ALIENS APC's I would buy two or three and make an "ORDINATUS" for Weapon Apocalypse (FACT!) ..

@HadoukenAvenger: Thanks, I'm glad you like it, it's actually based off of a real GW pic that can be found in the current rulebook, it's the big Black Templars splash page somewhere in the middle of the book. You'll have to play a bit Where's Waldo to find it!
@mwnciboo: Thanks as well, that's exactly what I was going for, I really love old school designs! As we can see with the new Stormraven, the more things change, the more they stay the same!

Those are great vehicles Ailaros but they are not "scratch built". Rather they are "kit-bashed", which is a distinction I'd like to point out for this thread in general.
"Scratch built" implies taking raw materials (plasticard, tubing, cardboard, etc., etc.) and building something from it, while "kit-bashing" is using components and pieces from one or more kits or commercial products and reconfiguring them, mixing them, or adding to them.
The first implies creation, the second implies modification.
A perhaps subtle but important distinction imho...
34801
Post by: MechaEmperor7000
Ailaros did say they were only partially Scratch Builds, which is true since the Manticore Launcher and Turret are indeed built from scratch. The one Da BlakBoar posted up there would be a kitbash.

The turret, main hull, machine gunz, boom kannon barrel are scratch built & track links are cast resin. Not much kit on there me thinks
39591
Post by: SpDDmN
^ imho - kit bashing or scratchbuilding is something you build using your imagination & getting your hands dirty so to speak.....& it's something you can be proud of.
Btw: here's my 'new' Whirlwind with some paint...not done yet, but thus far it took me 2hrs to build from scratch

SpDDmN wrote:^ imho - kit bashing or scratchbuilding is something you build using your imagination & getting your hands dirty so to speak.....& it's something you can be proud of.
That can be said of all modelling.
The point is that the terms are not interchangable. They denote very different methods of achieving a finished model.
A "scratch build" refers to taking raw materials and fashioning them into some object literally from scratch.
If you take parts from one or more kits and add them together (even if you add other converted/built parts) it isn't a "scratch build", though it is both a "conversion" AND a "kit-bash".
I think it is a matter of recognizing the terminology we are using as modelers; especially in a forum about such, and in particular when naming threads or identifying models, etc.
Nothing I have said is an attack on anyone's work or results, in fact the stuff in this thread is top shelf, but more I was referring to how using certain terminology to describe certain builds can be misleading.
39591
Post by: SpDDmN
^ good point......as you can see all the models I've displayed here are indeed scratchbuilds, but I did use some parts off kits that I got from a fellow gamer......I still consider my builds to be scratchbuilds - 95% raw materials 5% kit parts
My Whirlwind is however 100% raw materials & so to is all 3 of my drop pods

I'm a big fan of scratchbuilding. Most of the time i do smaller infantery sized conversions and scratchbuild but i tried some vehicles as well. Sadly none of them are finished. I hope you don't mind me posting those wip shots here.
The only one i have started painting is this counts as helbrute. (But it isn't fully finished jet)
Here is a size comparisson with a regular dreadnought.
And here are some shots of its magnetized weapon options so far.
Some WIP shots on my counts as vindicator
And here is an older shot of my vindicator next to my scratchbuild Slaanesh Rhino (The rhino only needs his havoc launcher build to be finished)
And finally my Baneblade. Also not complete. He needs more rivets and a few more details. And also the engine part is highly unfinished.
Every turret is magnetized an the bolters in the side sponsons are rotateable - at least as far as the sponsons allow it.
