So I was unsure which thread this belongs in, but I'm interested if anyone elses standard take-all-comers list has a theme song. Mine sure does. Plus, you can listen to other peoples songs on youtube, lastFM, etc and see if you can hear the connection! You might even find some new music you like. So, if you're interested, post:
Race
General Tactica
Song & Artist
How that song and artist mesh with your army
I'll start (since that's generally the thing for thread starters to do )
Tau
Highly mobile Suit & Kroot spam
"Set Me on Fire" by Pendulum
The song is partially DnB and partially dubstep, which any bass head can tell you is definitely hippie techno. I always imagine the average citizen of T'au as a super mellow hippie, smoking some kind of alien cheeba, and proficizing to eachother about "The greater good, bro... it's like.. yeaaaaa man...". The fast-ish pace of the song brings images of XV8's zipping around and blasting stuff with their plasma rifles, while the heavy bass hits conjure images of Kroot locked in fierce hand to hand combat. Couple that with a few hi-tech interludes and a ass ki'lkn beat, and you've got my Tau, in a nutshell.
This song represents both the image of my own IG regiment's world (Which I named 'Sanquine' and which I have ALOT of fluff now. Its like a Hive World...but completely deserted and ruins; the people live in the underground or among the very lower regions of the hives) (whom for political reasons; give regiments only to the Inquisition rather than the Guard) and for my own Inquisitor's army.

WTF I laughed out loud, literally.

Slaanesh/Nurgle daemon army: Growing On Me by The Darkness. A song about herpes I don't think I need to explain any further why these two daemons would fit the bill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMogMOjIH8M
Tzeentch army: Obama's campaign music. Nuff said
Khorne army: Killing Me, Killing You by Sentenced. (just the chorus) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkLhAxbUecw "Killing Me Killing You Killing all we have As our loves wither away
Burning Me Burning You Burning us to ash Drowning us in a sea of flames"

So the Darkness is the venerial offsrping of a Pterodactyl and a Space Ship... too awesome for words.
Race: Dark Eldar

Skrillex and Noisia. "Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAsX2fb4VTM

Cottonjaw, is that the tail end of a 87-93 302 Mustang in your sig? My first two cars were 5.0 mustangs, I still have the second one in a shed behind my parents place and take it out now and then when I'm up visiting- Bang for buck, those things are absolute monsters, reliable and easy to work on, to boot. And likely, I have enough spare parts in that shed to build another one from scratch, including some saleen bits and some junk I looted off an ASC McLaren Mustang that some fool rolled and then sent to the scrap heap. However, I grabbed the 1970 Cougar Eliminator that's in my sig about 2 years ago during the mortgage panic, I got it for a fraction of what it's worth and have been loving it ever since, even if it doesn't have the kick of a properly tooled 302. Its a shame that I haven't had the time and money to really get under the hood of the 302, but there's always next year...
As for the thread...
Race: Imperial Guard General Tactica: A rifle company, loosely based on the TO&E of a US Army rifle company, vietnam era. At higher points levels they can expect reinforcements from armor elements and some elite Air Cavalry squads. Song & Artist: 'The Rock', composed by Hans Zimmer. Great song, very martial feel, has upbeat parts (indicative of the shooting phase) and funerary dirges (indicative of the assault phase).
Race: Sisters of Battle/Ordo Hereticus General Tactica: A lot of Sisters of Battle, led by a canoness and a Witch Hunter Inquisitor. I used the Forgeworld vehicle kits, which I found to have a more militaristic feel than the GW rhino/exorcist, and I really like they way they look when covered in inquisitorial mandates and the like. It's a very dark-themed army, and the Inquisitor and retinue (and stormtroopers, to a lesser extent, because I didn't spend as much time on them moreso than anything else) follow the 'cavalcade of horror' theme we see in some of 40k's darker artwork, with bio-augmentation, labotomies, etc. I scrounged a lot of different manufacturers to get the right mix, and I'm still not happy with one of the models. In contrast, the Sisters are done up in gleaming metal with green cloaks, a very clean cut 'knights on parade' look that contrasts well with the inquisitorial elements. Song & Artist: Juke joint Jezebel, KMFDM. The original, not the remix. Such a weird song. The beat is sickeningly upbeat, almost pop, the lyrics much darker and disturbed. It leaves me with a feeling of corruption, loss, desolation, a sickness of the soul- elements that could be ascribed to both the heretics and the Imperium that burns them.
Potential Armies (I bought enough to make a combat patrol for each, but haven't had the time to do so)- Black Templars: Hammerfall, Man o War (replacing all 'Odin' references with 'Dorn'?) Night Lords: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, oldschool Metallica, et al.

Sure is. It's a 1990 25th Anniversary GT. I've dropped a 331 Stroker and a Tremec TKO600 Transmission into her. She's my baby (and daily driver!).
Love the music choices. Especially the KMFDM; perfect for Sisters.
Tau
Combined arms (Static firebase, mobile flanking elements.)
Russel Watson - Faith of the Heart
I came up with an entire propaganda music video for this song. At one point you see a quartet of Orcas entering atmo with heavy AA fire. The LZ is too hot, and the lead Air Caste pilot turns around, trying to break atmo again. The Shas'ui of one of the squads in the back makes his way into the crew compartment and shakes his head, pointing down. At the point where he goes "I've seen the wind so cold, and seen the darkest days," the quartet comes about, their hulls ionizing "But now all I feel is just the winds of change. I've been through the fire," one of the Orcas takes a direct hit. The Etherial on board the Orca next in line places a calming hand on the pilot's shoulder. "I've been through the rain," the Orca flies through the debris mass. With the very next "I've got Faith," there are Shas'la boots on the ground, fire teams of six advancing in over watch on enemy positions. Cut to various scenes of power suits jumping and cutting things in half, then by the next chorus, the IG they were fighting have turned their turrets around and are fighting side by side with the firewarriors against nids, orcs, or chaos. At the end you see a fire caste member side by side with a guardsman, flanked by all the other caste representatives with an etherial watching over all with his arms spread benificently.
Necrons
Phalanx
VNV Nation - Saviour (vox)
The lyrics speak for themselves about the nature of men reaching out to cruel, unfeeling Gods.
Im a SW man with a hero and termi heavy list and my song is Indestructible by Disturbed
the chorus goes like this...
"indestructible, determination that is incorruptible,
from the other side a terror to behold annhilation will be unavoidable. every broken enemy will know that there opponent had to be invincible, take a last look around while youre alive im an indestructible master or waaaaaaar."
could it be any more perfect for the wolves?oh and if you listen to this whole song ever lyric fits. plus it makes you feel hard
If I had to choose a theme song, I'd probably say Strength in Numbers by Times of Grace
The two lists I field are power blob infantry or mass tanks, so either way it fits.
Oh this will be fun.
Death Guard- "Everything Went Black"-Black Dahlia Murder
Basically, the song describes some big gribbly beast destroying the crap out of everything, and that's the great part about Nurgle. Just a bunch of crazy gribbly things destroying the crap out of everything.
"Where did it come from, how could it be stopped, So quickly we're to meet our end, our empire we have lost"
Space Marines- "Diamond Eyes"-Shinedown
It sounds really generic, yes, and it was written for the Expendables soundtrack, so that instantly makes it a badass-super-soldier song.
Dark Eldar- "Solve et Coagula"-Mudvayne
The angry sound of the song, along with some of the lyrics "Burn, bleed all the lives of life, ascend to the sky, Burn, all the martyrs" make this the sort of thing you would imagine as Raiders are falling from the sky onto you.
I love this thread. My old roommate was a huge metalhead and music fanatic, I might steer him towards this thread in an attempt to get him into 40k...

One of these days, I'm going to have the money to pull out that tired old 302 and overhaul mine. One of these days...
Triumphant and fast paced, fitting the 1st Arque's method of war well
Good choice.
When I first heard Jeff Wayne's WOTW, it blew my fething mind. Tonnes of hip hop and electronica producers have sampled and used it for beats and effects. It's really quite an amazing achievement given the technology at the time.
For Necrons, I can't think of anything better. When I first heard this track, I wasn't a big fan, but around 5:45, it just gets so creepy, with the Evil Dead samples and spooky bass groove. Enjoy!
Dropping into the chaos of battle and expecting to win is one thing, but to do so against impossible odds, AND to have a smile on one's face? That is miracilous.

Lots of Heavy Support
Himlen är oskyldigt blĂ¥, by Ted Gärdestad
"Himlen är oskyldigt blĂ¥" is swedish and means "The sky is innocently blue". My Craftworlds name Tonesh-ian means Blue Skies.
I always think of drop pod launch bays, with sirens warning of a launch in progress, and when the drums and guitar starts, it's like drop pods just started firing off.

Wow I love metal too (BDM are fething great) but who really reads the lyrics its not like any metal band in the history of metal has ever had anything worth saying that needed to be herd
Years ago, when I was playing my Witch Hunters, this PIL song was droning on and on in my iTunes when I was ripping things up with my Arco Flagellants. I thought it would be hilarious if this song was what was playing inside their helmets as they charged crazily into battle.
Taking Control because of the infantry. Got some awesome beats, which is like the different Aspect Warrior's doing their stuff, and the vocals are like random explosions of enemy heads when the Farseer uses MW :9
WHRAOF:NOGAS because it talks (screams) about shooting/firing, which fits in well with my Fire Prism and two Wraithlords, one of which has a SL, Star Cannon, Wraith Sword, and ERL. Also so people know that I like powerviolence music, along with the power-weapon violence with those smexy HB's.
Race: Orks
General Tactica: To crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women
Song & Artist: We Die Young by Alice in Chains
How that song and artist mesh with your army: Take another hit, and bury your brother (or brethren if it suits you better)
The keyboard/glitch tech in the in first 25 seconds of this song sounds like I imagine drones to vocalize, in a series of tones in almost a musical way. Or maybe I need to lay off the blaze-worthies.
Dark Eldar
Raider heavy fast attack
Slayer of light :band: Ensiferum
"I will pull everything with me under the surface
And all the screams will fade into my dreams
Fall now! Dying light!
I will burn away the ground beneath your feet
And all will be vanished in the darkness
Dying light! Fall now!
And let the night arrive"

Another commander after me own heart. "We're going to cut out their living guts and use them to gresse the treads of our tanks! We're going to murder those losy b**sted by the bushel!"
For my Tyranids, it has to be "Unchain the Wolves" by Destroyer 666. It is such a war-like song, andit fits perfectly in my mind with watching my berserk Raveners hitting the enemy line with an Alien Fury. Itfits very, very well.
since I'm just learning how to play with Tau (minimum one game a week since the start of January and never won a game!) this song is pumping me up quite a bit right now

While not my armies but my buddy plays Choas and we both love metal so we came up with this list
Slaanesh Painkiller as covered by Death
Khorne The Axewielder by Stormwarroir
Tzeentch Powerslave by Iron Maiden
Nurgle Miasma Black Dahlia Murder
Race: Space Wolves
General Tactica: Run up to stuff and assault it. Failing that, shoot it.
Song & Artist: It used to be "Of Wolf and Man" by Metallica, but now it's "The Animal" by Disturbed (since it fits a bit better, and it's a superior song anyway)
An Imperial Guard compilation someone put together that always makes me think of my Cadians at the end of a long campaign. If I ever need to get into the mood for 40k, this is what I listen to. Repeatedly :p
Space Marines- The Chosen Ones (Dream Evil)
Space Wolves- Sons of Odin (Manowar)
Imperial Guard- Tenth Man Down (Nightwish)
Cadian Shock Troopers- 40:1 (Sabaton) -- just replace all the words "German" and "Polish" in the song with "Chaos" and "Cadian," respectively, and its the perfect song for them World Eaters- Hands of Doom (Manowar)
Word Bearers- Heresy (Nine Inch Nails)
The Pyre (Chaos Space Marines)- Burning Inside (Ministry)
Dark Eldar- Sleep Now (Dark City OST)
for my home made chapter of space marines - blood brothers by iron maden
and for my orks- ozzy osborne bark at the moon
anf for my chaos marines cradle of filth damned in any language.
(Notices that the thread is about theme songs for own armies, not just any army) Oh, um...
Sisters of Battle (or Inquisition in general)- O Fortuna (Carl Orff, or alternatively the metal version by Therion)
Dark Eldar- Sleep Now (Dark City OST) OR Come to Daddy (Aphex Twin)
Crimson Fists- Warriors of the World (Manowar) (Off the top of my head...I dunno, I never found a song that fit the Fists perfectly)
A sort of twisted version of "God Was Never On Your Side" by Motorhead would work for Sisters:
Spoiler:
If the stars fall down on me,
And Sol refused to shine,
Then may the shackles be undone,
AND all the old words cease to rhyme
If the sky turned into stone,
It would matter not at all,
For there is only heaven in the sky,
Hell does not know of its downfall!
Let the voice of faithful shine,
Let the heresy vanish for all time,
Chaos' face hidden, ever unseen,
You can't ask them what it all means,
Emperor is ever on our side,
He was never on your side,
Right or Wrong, let Him decide
Emperor was ever on our side.
See ten thousand ministries
See the holy righteous soldiers
They come to heal, faith stronger than steel
The abused given succor, of body and mind
Emperor is wise, he is not still.
When these false prophets, call him friend,
He is not silent, nor is he blind
We are not abandoned in the end!
Let the sword of the faithful shine,
Let us be free for prayer and shrine
Chaos' face is hidden, turned away,
They will never have a word to say,
Empeorr was never on your side,
Empeorr is ever on our side,
Right or wrong, HE decides
Emperor is ever on our side!
Grey Knights - Team America World Police Theme tune, with terrorists replaced with "Daemons" and America replaced with "Imperium"
"Imperium! F**k yeah!"
Race: Imperial guard.
General Tactica: Massive Footslogging Gun line army, Or maybe a Tank company.
Song & Artist: Dance of the Knights, Sergei Prokofiev.
How that song and artist mesh with your army: Just listen to the first 2 minutes of it and tell me its not... Heres a link to save you some time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_hOR50u7ek
Race: Dark Angels
General Tactica: Overwhelming tactial squad defensive fire.
Song & Artist: Nedgang, Finntroll.
How that song and artist mesh with your army: I think that the dark brutal nature of this song matchs the Dark Angels mind set and their over all presence spot on.

Tau Empire
I generally fight the battle as normal then around turn 4-5 when the enemy is almost entirely on my side of the board, I deepstrike three units of 3 XV9s behind the enemy and tear them apart with 72 shots per turn of Phased Ion Gun badassery.
I personally think that theme songs gotta be something that reminds you of that army. But theme songs that dont really have the atmosphere of the army aint that good. Songs that would go well because of the "fluff" or an ironic title that would fit for the army (like in the first page, "blood angels - raining blood by slayer, i know it was joke tho ).
Like for necrons i could imagine some electric sounding creepy stuff, not just a song that is about "metal skeletons" or something.
Lumppu wrote:Like for necrons i could imagine some electric sounding creepy stuff, not just a song that is about "metal skeletons" or something.
Was that a jab?
I chose Red War because, well, my Necrons arered ....and the guitar sounds like the sound effects you get in some horror films that are used to illustrate or amplify the obvious feeling of horror a character feels when they see the monster/killer/zombie horde cresting the horizon or rounding the corner at the end of a corridor and advancing slowly and purposely on their prey.
I'll choose one that fits the 'atmosphere' of the Necrons better:
Thorns - Shifting Channels - (The song really kicks in at 0.33)
Race : Sisters of Battle - Order of Choir Carmine
General Tactica : Mechanized Horde army
Song & Artist : Soprano version of Soviet March (RA3 - Uprising OST) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vm5QxCHbgLA
How that song and artist mesh with your army :
Well. My army is painted in dark red and gold. Sisters names on my bases are all eastern-european, and it is a rather cheerful music for those who go to battle for the Emperor of Mankind !

Since I use Salamanders and have a nasty habit of using Drop Pods, what ELSE would I have for a theme?
*Note: for those of you unaware, Salamanders have a unique appearance because of their home world's sun, which turns their skin pitch black. This joke should make sense now*

Space wolves based Custom Chapter
tactics - variable. Usually HS covering my troops as they rush forward to grab objectives and annoy the enemy.
War is the answer - Five finger deathpunch.
And ever since I heard it, I've always thought Canto 34 worked well for necrons. The wordless advance as they destroy. I hear the song and just picture them implacably advancing. I'd post links to both songs, but unfortunatly, I'm at work. YouTube is often frowned upon.

Dead on the Dance Floor - Winds of Plague
Soft parts, followed by heavy parts, with a slow feeling of impending death. Also, the lyrics are great for SM in general
My IG have an excellent track record for making the most confusing and bizarre things happen. Stormies killing a Tervigon in an assault? Check. Vendetta taking a flat-out Falcon tank ram, destroying the falcon, but shaking the Vendetta crew? Yup. Manticore running Eldrad off the table turn 1? Oh yes. Veterans stuck in an assault with fire dragons for almost an entire match? Check. Twice? Sadly.
Ork Speed Freeks. Plenty of warbuggies, trukks and BWs.
DemoliciĂ³n, by Wau y los Aaaarghs!!!. A cover of a 1965 song by Peruvian garage (proto-punk?) band Los Saicos. For those not well versed in the tongue of Cervantes, the lyrics proclaim the love of demolition equipment, explosives and blowing up train stations... Adequately orkish
As a sidenote, I had the chance to talk to Wau y los Aaarghs!!! frontman Juanito some months ago and found out, to my surprise, that he's a fellow wargamer!.
for my space marine Shadow Legion Chapter...hmmm...
Either "dance of the dead" by Iron maiden
"Bat out of Hell" by Meat Loaf
"Monster is Loose" by Meat Loaf
or "I get knock down" well the version i have is by Smashmouth and i am not to show how is the original artist is...
I love all of them i don't know which one that I would pick...
For my CSM's (Khorne and Nurgle) I'd probably start with 'Worlds on fire' by the Prodigy from their 'Invaders must die' album - but I'd probably have to end with 'take me to the hospital' from the same album.
For my Blood Angels company Omen by the Prodigy, just cause it suits them racing into battle with their armour and tanks etc! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMVTKOoy1uk
For my tau with loads of tanks and the like I'd have to say Spaceman by the Killers because i love the song and it suits the fact that tau are aliens! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnA4r4ocDII
Actually, my generic Tau have now rejected that pathetic excuse for Greater Good chillin' music, and now prefer this.
Most often played during negotiations with Orks.
I themed my army of Bad Moon Orks after "bad moon rising" even named my warboss "Kreedank Killwata" (sounds like creedence clearwater) and play the song constantly during games. I field a lot of deffkoptas, cause they are hilarious, and claim they are what the song refers to.
That is exactly what I was thinking for any Space Marine in general but more fitting for the Iron Hands.
For my SM army, either a successor of the Fists or Iron hands, that march forward into battle firing until CC then enemies start dropping.
So the best fitting song is this: Shock To The System - Iron Man (Wick-It Dubstep Remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXMObWH5CT8

{A Light-Hearted Pop Song.}
{By Jon James}
{Verse 1:}
I was layin in my bed last night
And heard an unknown sound
Didn't know what it could be
Began to look around
There was nothing there at first
But then before my eyes
A warphole opened in my room
And I heard Slaaneshi cries
A pale clawed figure
Began to emerge
She pointed with daemonic talon
And said "Let's start this purge"
Coincidentally, half of them are named John because management doesn't like memorizing names.
My large lump of IG infantry dont even get names, they get tiny red dots on the bottom of their stands for each battle that they survive and won, and considering that my IG infantry survival rate =20%, there arent that many dots...

How that song and artist mesh with your army:
Listen to the lyrics, it's almost as if the song itself were written to refer to The Fall. My Craftworld (made up, named Irun'Mahn) avoid conflict unless it is direly necessary and this kind of matches the protagonists of the song who seem determined to avoid conflict until fate forces them down that path, from which there is no escape. It kind of refers to how the Eldar are ultimately doomed and dying and aim to do what they can to preserve the universe whilst they still exist. Also mentions repressing their baser selves...

any IG army: almost any sabaton song
SM\ BA,ETC. bike army: feuer frei, rammstein
BA jetter: mario level 1-1
tyranids: do the evolution, pearl jam
SM chapters: sons of odin\ warriors of the world, manowar
SM deathwatch theme: destroy the orcs, 3" of blood\ metroid theme
Why the metroid theme? metroid is all about killing aliens. I also like to imagine DW crawling through dark corridors like in metroid

The best bit's about 2.30 in How it meshes with my army: If you image ranks of Space Marines charging toward the enemy, guns blazing, with this music playing... It's hard not to see how it meshes
My Ultramarines army (strike where the enemy is at the weakest and eliminate target prioritys first):
Breaking benjamin-Blow me away

Eldar army (mechanised, strike fast and hard, leaving the enemy unable to orchestrate any counter strike) :
Nightwish-Bye bye beautiful

Warriors of chaos (khorne themed, an army of psychopaths that just advance to the enemy and chop them to pieces):
Slipknot-Psychosocial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOVd2GsYfoA
I've been using the Battlefield 2142 theme alot. Mostly for Angry Marines, though it doesn't quite capture their sheer fury. Maybe screaming "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-" Would suffise. "CCCCCCKKKKK YOUUUUUUUU!"
Knights of the Storm (Vanilla Marines) Jack-of-All-Trades
La Resistance (Imperial Guard) Underdogs (as of now, since I have not gotten all the units I need. I certainly hope this is not their 'strength' when I am done with them)
Note: I chose this song because these guys do not oppose the emperor in any way (well, most of them, anyways) and are just standing up to their tyrannical leaders, who work in about the same way the Confederacy does (or maybe more like the dominion...)
My Feral Orks (Orks) Rip 'em ta shreds!
Edit: I've looked at some of the songs other people picked, and geez. Note to self: always look at all the comments before writing your own, lest the music is not as good as it could be.
I usually dont go first so it fits with the music, slow and low at first without much hope, then it climbs as I mobilize and go through shooting, then a brake at the charge with epic climax music to finish the assault
