I am keeping track of my progress on this year's Adepticon army on my blog. Normally I keep a mirror blog thread here on Dakka but this year due to a computer from the stone ages finally about to croak and my fancy new smart phone I am doing a lot of the updating from an app. So I will link to my blog here, watch it for the most up to date additions, but when I do hop on the computer I will get in here and update the thread with progress.

Enjoy!

And featuring the little boomerang kid. The grot's pointy arm has since been replaced. I thought I was out of grot arms but I found a better pointy one by chance among my gallon of bits.
Morks' head has changed about five times since I made his body, but I think this is the one. It's been hard to find a head that would A. look good with hair and B. be the right scale to the body. Most have been either too small or too big.

I like the look of it. Some of the detail is hard to see, due to the size of the pic. I always love a grot sidekick.
I checked out your site too. Very nice work there. I've got high hopes for this WAAAGH.

Master Blaster/Thraka
It is kinda hard to tell what's going on with the lighting but it will make more sense once it is painted.
I redid the list today as the Makk Tanker Trukk is just going to be too big to count as a Trukk, so I swapped it out for a Wagon and swapped some stuff around so it will fit. I will post the new version soon.

The Humongous and Wes
The Humongous isn't leaning as bad as the photo makes out. It's a product of perspective and losing his other leg behind his body. Also in hindsight I am going to swap their boss poles. Doesnt make sense for the #2 to have a larger boss pole.
Not as extensive conversion wise as the others, they just sort of fell together out of perfect bits and I left it at that.
And with these two down, all 50-some Orks are done! All that is left at this point is some more vehicle riders and the Deffcopta gyro. The display is coming along well but I decided to get some more varied plasticard so it is on hold for the time being.

Awesome post-industrial look - particularly like the greenstuff mohawk, and the overall 'busy' look of the models. Also second the bosspole swap - it will help to balance each model's compostion.

I love every single one of these. Do you think you could make a model for Ironbar Bassey (the guy in Beyond Thunderdome with a doll's head bosspole on his back)? IMHO he was the most awesome character from that film.
6559
Post by: GMMStudios
I mainly just went for the bigger characters as HQ and various nobz. The problem with making specific characters is if you start making regular orks into characters, you have a bunch that also represent no one. So I am going for a balance of Mad Max flavored Orks rather than a representation of the movies themselves.
The models are pretty much done, doing some final work on vehicles, mainly the Gyro.

Is the Mina Morker going to be a Objective marker, or a character? And the "...ork with boobs determined to rule." confused the crap outta me.
6559
Post by: GMMStudios
Haha yes the tagline is ripped from a thunderdome poster and its talking about Aunty Entity/Tina Turner (Mina Morker). In the original it says "a woman."
She is a Nob in the Nob squad. I was going to make her an objective but it didnt seem right, so I just made her a nob.
The objectives are a banner, a base of ammo runts, and the grot with huge bulletin board and speakerphone thing that comes with the forge world mek. I'll take some pictures of them sometime.

One question.
Why basecoat with gray?
Thanks and take care
6559
Post by: GMMStudios
It's neutral. It allows the true color of the paint and doesnt effect the final color like black and white do. Its why true primer is gray. Also from a design perspective card matting is usually gray for the same reason.
I honestly don't understand why people use black and white or why that started.

Wow, are you using the FW Kill tanks as battlewagons? Thats some expensive wagons
6559
Post by: GMMStudios
Yes the two large wagons are the FW kill tanks. The pickup trukk is the two conversion kits put together (funny all said and done the only plastic bits used were the metal chassis bit and a couple arms over the cab) and the half trakk is the FW kit with an added cover and junk.
They are definitely worth it though. Ive never bought FW and not thought I got a good deal for the quality and detail.

I went ahead and did most of the small details on these two Trukks. I was going to wait and do the riders when I do the infantry but I realized all I am really worried about is the skin matching. The other colors are easy enough to match. So I will do the skin and the bone colors (as most of them go over the finished green) later on down the line. I will likely also add dags and other freehand at the end, but I want to wait and see where the infantry go in terms of paint. I also want to wait and decide lens colors later as well.
There will be more riders on each of these, especially the topped Trakk. I decided to do them seperately mid way into adding them to these two vehicles. The Trukk will have a gunner in the cab and a couple more in the bed. The Trakk has a couple up top and a few in the bed as well.
Now onto the next part, I think the Tanker.
Looking back at the pictures, please forgive how terrible they are. Using bad lighting and no tripod. I will of course do final pics when they are done and I update the site.

Also, that turret fits perfects where the original would go.

I see the logic in using the cart. It's genius. You can carry all your stuff for the game (including snacks) and even include a little carrier for a folding chair. Just pust the cart from place to place and BAM! You're set.

The cart is six pieces: The 4 legs, and the two trays. The trays are identical, but the display is built into the recess of the top one. So no it is not "removable" but they are basically one in the same.
The cart itself is easy to put together and take apart, which is what I will do to get it there. There is also a fancy handle with recesses for dice and a cupholder

Yesterday I did most of the basics of the board. There are still a lot of small details to be painted, and there are a lot of things not attached to be painted (cacti, piggies, the two towers in the back, the ramps and crates over the front gap, the billboard etc etc). Im going today to print out the billboard but I think I am going to start the infantry as well. It will probably be a bit before I update with something good again, as it will be a couple days before I have anything worth looking at on 100 or so Orks. Automatically Appended Next Post: Lt. Coldfire wrote:Geez, you do some great work. Is a lot of the paintjobs done with an airbrush? A lot of it looks like some really precision airbrushing. Veray niiiiicce!
It depends, but on the vehicles you've seen, the airbrushing is limited to basecoating. The only color I can think of other than the brown basecoat that was airbrushed is the olive green on the tanker and trukks. Everything else is by hand. Automatically Appended Next Post: MajorTom11 wrote:That is hands down, and without exaggeration the best display board layout I have ever seen. Ever.
I discussed this with a friend the other day...the display is not as creative overall as the pirates, but it's mainly due to the size of the army. The pirates were a tiny army and the display was sort of 50/50 of the whole thing. The display wasn't to show off the army it was half of it. In this case I am dealing with a LOT more models and my hand is forced to create something that is more function than aesthetics. Hopefully it is still good enough, and the size of the army will make up for it.

From looking at it, you can't tell that it comes apart. In that case, it's even MORE genius (and I hope you're driving this to Adepticon yourself. LOL).
Great idea. I suspect we'll see a LOT more display bases integrated into carts in the future.
In regard to comparing it to the Pirate Display... I think you're talking Apples and oranges. I mean, I think you highlighted the differences perfectly, but I suspect this one is going to be at LEAST as good as the pirates, just in a different way.
Looking forward to the rest of your updates!

Well thanks, I am glad you think so. It's hard to look at your own work sometimes. Sometimes I wonder what movie directors think of their own movies, such as George Lucas and Star Wars.
Well, for most people it isn't an issue of toting it around. Most people that do a display do something like a picture frame or a flat surface which is easy to carry around. A cart is only necessary if you are doing something so large it is actually more convenient to build it into a 3x2 50lb plastic/rubber/whatever cart For most armies a simple rectangle matching the bases is enough to get the points and look very nice.
And yes I am going with a friend and it fits in the trunk of his car. Automatically Appended Next Post:
Went and printed out the billboard and mounted it on foamboard. Just eyeballing it right now. This is not where it will go (piggies go on the walkway), it will be up on legs, the bottom higher than the rocks in the background.
There is also a giant scrap metal skull and crossbones that will be hung in the top right corner.
Actually you can see the little hole the left "leg" will go into left of the board.

Actually I have yet to start the boyz. Been getting caught up in the display. I need to stop and work on the display at the end because it is really the least time consuming and the little details dont add up as much. Going to start the infantry here in a few though.

The level of detail and speed with which you accomplish it is simply breathtaking!
That display board is way better than anything i've ever seen before, i honestly don't know what you're worrying about! It looks fantastic.
Good luck on the infantry!!

How on earth do you paint so quick? Something of that magnitude would take me weeks, not to mention it would look like rubbish compared to this.

A lot of it is just practice and experience, painting models every day.
But I can tell you, back when I started, what made me the slowest was going slow because I was worried about making mistakes. So dont worry about making mistakes, and you wont make any, and youll go faster.
Sounds easier than it is, I know, but practice makes perfect.

Good advice, cheers!
How do you stay motivated though? That always seems to be my problem, especially when painting the grunts.

I guess I would have to reference Office Space: "Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you'd do if you had a million dollars and you didn't have to work. And invariably what you'd say was supposed to be your career"
I never get sick of painting. My body has it's limits sitting at a desk but every day I wake up excited to work on something.

Amazing looking board, and a fan of your previous work. Maybe consider weathering the billboard a bit, just an idea to add to it.

Working on the boys, and they wont look like much until they are almost done, so thats the reason for no picture today Automatically Appended Next Post: Enslaviour wrote:Amazing looking board, and a fan of your previous work. Maybe consider weathering the billboard a bit, just an idea to add to it.
Yes, I had just glued it to the foamboard and slapped on some plasticard a few minutes before I took that picture. It will definitely be weathered. I tried to do some more in photoshop but it will be so much easier to do it with paint

Excellent work as always. The movie poster is dynamite, I can't wait to see all the minis on the display stand along with it!

Boyz are done! Both the riders pictured and the infantry. All that's left now is the three main characters and some display details. This will be my last post until it's done since it is so close. If I get done early I will update the site before I go with finished pictures.
