Im currently building a 40k city using GW terrain.
So far i have built a Manufactorum, Cathedral, administratum building and a large landing pad plus a few home made foam buildings (Ill be adding more pics soon)
Im looking for more inspiration so any comments or ideas are welcome.
Is any one else on DAKKA DAKKA involved in making a battlefield/terrain if so wat is it and why ???
Nice work matey! building a manufactorum myself , but its still in the develepoment stages in regards to your question. Madmartykmf has a great cities of death blog as does terraformer.
good luck with the rest of the build. And can i ask how many kits for the manufactorum
i would try a unified paintscheme instead of induvidual colours for each building , the red on the manufactorum looks great just needs some depth imo, the admin building is pretty cool gotta admit, that would look great painted up.
Automatically Appended Next Post: so as to my question , i am guessing about 4-6 kits?
Looking good Paranoia_Agent! I will be checking in on your thread. As for color I think the red you have is really nice and stick with the Codex Gray. Let the little details do all the talking rather then a paint scheme that does not fit the overall feel or fluff.
Mike
@Neil, Thanks for the plug buddy. Your dollar is in the mail!
Thanks guys yea i thought the red suited it good old mechanicum red!
At the moment the paints more of a base coat i gotta go back and finish it.
The admin building/cathedral, is probly gonna be painted with lots of gold a silver trim.
Unfortunately it doesent look like that anymore im in the process of completly rebuilding it, ill be adding updated pics on thursday along with pics of my almost finished landing pad and administratum building.
I am currently doing the same thing, building a city. That because my main army, guard, is Urban themed.
For inspiration on on what buildings to create, just look into the stratagems in the cities of death book.
Otherwise:
-PDF barracks
-Manufactorum
-Slums
-Power generator
-Bar
-The governor's palace
-Arbites Office
-Garage/tanking station
-Train station (?)
- much and much more...
for the paint schem i have used a white, black and silver sprays and just apply them randomly but i suppose you can do it with any colours
i looks great by the way i would deffinatly add stuff like shrines they look great in the middle of squares
Haha yea ''Kingoftheswords'' is has got a big doller sign on it already and its no were near done.
Just so you guys now its currently got:
3 Shrine of the Aquila sets
4 Basilica Administratum kits
1 Sanctum Imperialis kit
A set of pillers and a crashed shuttle, so alot of kits already.
Unfortuanatly "neil101" i havent had the chance too play many games on it yet.
I have made every building in my city fit with this big scale im currently working on another building a large Basilica Administratum i will post pics of that soon.
My biggest problem with it at the moment is trying too make the crashed shuttle work well with the building ill probly use lots of modeling clay so it looks like its hit the building and skidded across the floor.
Just the sort of inspiration i need to get me pumped for my city building and painting!
I agree with you 100% on the scale so far, i always felt the piddly buildings the GW studio (and most people) make were completely at odds with the fluff.
Thanks for the comments guys i really need the feedback to keep this huge project going.
Yea i always thought that if i was gonna build a 40k hive city i was gonna build it big!!!
I will be putting up a few pics of the city as a whole soon, the bourd im currently using is 48" wide by 96" long but i dont think it's big enough wat do you guys think make it bigger ?????
And i want to add a crashed landspeeder in the courtyard of the smaller building any suggestions on how to model the dead marine pilots ???
Well, dead SM don't have any real expressions with their helmets on. So, just model them limp, and with some scorchmarks, as a landspeeder is open topped. Hope this helped.
My origional idea is, Having one marine partially decapitated with a piece of metal sticking out his neck limp and gorified.
The other guy crawled away from the wreckage with half of one leg missing proped up against the side of the speeder bolter in hand and other arm holding a gaping hole in his chest.
Scorch mark idea for the win!!!
And blood everywere completly gorified for your wargaming needs.
haha, your visualisation sounds more interesting than mine. Mabye bahe the crawling man half in and half out of the landspeeder, to suggest his wounds were too much?
I like it problem is SM usually have chemicals pumping through there system when wounded to help them get that little further or fight that bit longer.
Its a good idea though i think ill have to crash a Valkyrie or something into my manafactorum and do it using guard models.
Everything looks really awesome, I am very impressed. I just picked up a cities of death set, but I think mine will all be a little smaller. As far as re-basing the one building, I picked up the warhammer modular movement tray
to go with my cities of death, and will paint them up as a tile or cement floor. You could try that. I have also used balsa wood as the base of my one building, but I don't know if that would really fit the imperial sector theme. sorry not the greatest pic, but you get the idea
I would have to agree. You asked me for some input and after you pointed out the sprue debris I think you right! You don't have to do anything crazy just break them off and flock um over.
As for movement trays, I have been using them for years and I love them. So if you cutting your buildings off the current bases remember the trays are pretty small so be ready to join a few together if needed.
For this building I used three trays two side by side and cut another to fit inside turned out to be a pretty sweet looking Here is a pic for reference
Looking great, however I wonder if there are cheaper alternatives to the GW modular movement trays for the tiled bases? perhaps look into dolls house furniture/textured plasticard. It is a very nice effect, but seems expensive for what it is.
Would love to have the space/money/free time to put something like this together!
Paranoia_Agent wrote:A small piece of terrain i made with spare bits, still needs a lot of work.
As always (ideas/suggestions) are welcome.
I think that all your buildings look great, I do however have one little suggestion or opinion. The base of your buildings is wood (I am guessing) , after you paint them they really still look like wood. My suggestion would be to use some fine flocking or kitty litter and give the bases some texture. If you are on a budget then buy some cheap kitty litter. If you have a few bucks to kick around here is a link to a company that can really help add some basing love to your terrain.
So i randomly decided to see wat my 'Cities of Death' table looks like covered in models!
I used my entire tyranid army and a fraction of my Imperial guard army i decided not to put super heavys on the table as they take up to much room theres also only a few of my tanks present much for the same reason theres just not enough room, hope you like it.
PS: Sorry most of my models arent painted i have few hundred to do and not nerely enough time to do them so the best i can do for now is leave them grey or undercoat a few sorry if you hate grey or undercoated armys im getting there slowly just finished painting 25 Vostroyan models only 60 more to go then on to the Tyranids.
Truly amazing….. I never saw this before and here I am a big fan of City Fight…….. I may have to borrow a couple ideas for my project……
How many kits have you gone through so far?
Thanks guys, yea 'Haonn' that is a leman russ punisher.
I finally played the game with my brother the other day it had been set up for almost a week by that point begging to be played.
It was an awsome game and im happy to say an imperial victory i lost just ova half my army mostly because i kept charging large numbers of cadians in combat to out number the nids it worked just... i needed to keep the tyranids away from my tanks and heavy guns and wat better way than sacrificing hand fulls of cadians to do that?
The Vostryans were easily the stars of the match surviving a charge from a carnifex a hive tyrant and a tyragon prime plus hand fulls of lesser nids, only 10 of 60 survived but they killed almost twice there number thanks to having the first turn " thank the dice gods"!!!!
From what I've seen it doesn't look like you need help. To answer your question on the first page: Once I move I am going to make a bunch of mobile terrain and a gaming table. I plan on having 6 boards on the table at once, and the first set of boards will be a volcano theme to match my bases and the Eye of Terror background my chapter has
Automatically Appended Next Post: Whoa, I didn't read the whole thread, and those pictures above are fething AWESOME
Sorry i haven't updated this blog for a while my life hasn't really been going to plan lately.
I recently lost my job my aprentership and broke up with my girlfriend so my hobby has been put on hold for a while but with the help of a friend I have started working on my city again slow progress for now but atleast I have started it again hope you guys like it
Sorry to hear about your life troubles , i too have a fair share at the moment, but dakka and 40k a pretty good for a bit of escapist fun.
Actually love your new stuff , the ammo dump is great, i ahve being wnating to do the same fora while now but never got round to it. Also the detailsing on your building is lovely , the sandbags are ace , are they bought or made , they look like the ones madmarty mike used on his city of death ?
can i ask where the barrels are from ?
but you saved the best for last ... that behemoth is breathtaking, how many kits have gone into that beast?
Thanks for the comments guys yea life can only get better from here can hardly get any worse.
'Neil101' sorry to here you have problems of your own may the 41st millennium keep us occupied.
Thanks for the good thoughts 'madmartykmf'
As for the sand bags I make them all myself I may put up a tutorial one day time permitting. And the barrels I bought them from my local hobby store ill find out what company makes them tomorrow and send you a PM.
That behemoth has been nick named "Reaper" I used 1 banblade kit and 1 shadowsword kit so far plus a few bits and pieces from my spare bits box ill put a link to the blog below.
! The little missile/ammo piece is superb, I'm going to have to steal that. I even have one of those pieces, no idea where it came from (the bullet/missile looking thing with a pointed tip)
BoA.Raccoon wrote:! The little missile/ammo piece is superb, I'm going to have to steal that. I even have one of those pieces, no idea where it came from (the bullet/missile looking thing with a pointed tip)
Thanks ! yea that little piece is a favourite of mine as well I may add a fuel dump stratagem soon, and that little pointed shell came from the banblade/shadowsword sprue.
Just a small update for now as requested ill post a few photos of my Vostroyan army starting with my Leman Russ eradicator ive tried to make it have a more urban feel with the sandbags etc........ Im not sure if I like the razor wire though any suggestions ? should it stay or go ??? and should I make the grey a little darker use 'codex grey maybe'?
So im working on another new building ill have all the walls completed buy tomorrow and hopefully have some of the detail finished buy Monday here's a few quick teaser photo's for now, keep an eye out for tomorrow's update
Wow. I must say, I do like terrain like this- the stuff that really lives up to the idea, as well as rather more real life situations (as in historic city fights, that is of course). I am really impressed and commend your pockets and your bravery in this task.

Officially subbing on 2 July 2011, Kaesar II.
Thanks for the support its comments like yours that keep this project going
'madmartykmf' Yea im a little better, actually this building is helping keep my mind of things hopefully ill get a lot of work done on the city in the coming weeks.
'Sekhemet' surprisingly I dident rage at this building as much as I thought I would
As promised heres that update on the new building, when its finished it's going to have a ruined eldar falcon grav tank crashed in the back of the building.
Ok so monorail it is, unfortunately I wont be able to start it for quite some time its just not in the budget atm but as soon as I have the money ill start, if im feeling adventurous I might even make a station for it.
Drab green sounds good if you have any examples of this don't hesitate to put them up or any other ideas such as the monorail im always in need of inspiration.
Hehe! I think i mention a monorail whenever anyone asks for ideas in a city, they're so cool! Yet to see one built though Also, raised highways are just as cool.
Monorail, train is just about the hardest thing you can do. If you do go for it, check out Blue Table Painting on youtube. They have a sick build for an armoured train.
So I had a few spare bits remaining in my bits box I was going to use them to make one of my other buildings larger but I decided to make this small piece instead considering I have an apocalypse game coming up, 15k per side and I was a little short on terrain, I have to cover a 96" by 96" board.
So heres the results I still have a few touch ups to do and painting of course but other wise its done, as always comments and opinions welcome.
Great terrain blog! really creative use of the GW kits.
I belive the apocalypse white dward had a really good board built, that had a kind of traintrack as part of it. I shall try to find a pic of it for you (unless you have already seen it )

Nice terrain made from spare bits, love it!
Thanks Cain, and yea I have seen that board it's amazing !
Thanks guys, im glad too be back i will try too keep updating as regulary as possible i will also be posting a few photos of my Vostroyan imperial guard.
Ok heres a photo of the sister building, as you can see the floor is very similar to the other building, I will be working on a small courtyard piece soon, keep an eye out !
Ok so I managed to find the time to start on the crashed shuttle, its still a WIP so any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Let me know what you think, im after a lot of feedback on this project......
Ok so im back again ! and this time I brought a new building with me !!! comments opinions welcome.... Im working on making commission's for my local hobby store
Welcome back Paranoia, as always your work is amazing. The battle damage on this building really suits the title "City of Death" and the colour and use of tiling is well done but might I suggest to increase the hight of the sandbag barricades, as well as put some in the windows as seen in earlier buildings you have produced, in order to show that the building was fought over and defended by the mighty Vostroyan Army.
Thanks everyone for the feedback ! Ill actually do my best to keep the blog going this time....
Ill be posting another update on the crashed shuttle in a few days and starting a new building as a commision for my local hobby store !
I plan for it to be similar to this builing in that its badly ruined and has smashed tiles as i find its an easy way to get good looking terrain.
Madmarty ! I look forward to seeing your terrain !
So I just read your blog/thread all the way through, and I have suggestions/comments in order of the blog.
First off, I would like to suggest adding a little more rubble in floor space of the Cathedral, It looks good already, but I think it could stand a little more… In search of a better world, destruction. Also I’m loving the little pieces of terrain/rubble you’ve taken to building! It gives your city character, and life! In my experience I have found that these little pieces are really helpful to filling in extra space, but I assume that you already knew that.
In regards to the post on “Cities of Death” and “City fight” I love the codex “City fight” but I haven’t gotten “Cities of Death” but I can only assume that it is just as good.
And, I thought you said something about foam buildings… I would love to see what they look like! Most of (all of) my buildings are made of foam, but I had to get rid of them when I moved…
Over all I’d like to say that this is all amazing work! And I’m subbed!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and may I Congratulate you on your commision work! It looks great!
Thanks 'Sir William' i apreciate the support ! Unfortunatly the catherdral is no more... It was just far to big and a large project. I will be making a smaller one more like a church.
And as for foam buildings ill see if i can find a few and post some pics.
'Brother SRM' cheers, keep an eye out for my new building i will be starting it this weekend !
