The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/02 03:31:52

Post by: elbrokendo

Hey guys.

So this is a new project for me.

I wanted to have a unique looking DE army, and I figured that the Dryad parts would make for good banner poles and base decoration.

I set about assembling my first unit of DE Kabalite Warriors while thinking on a theme that would take advantage of the range currently available.

I settled on a 50/50 mix of Wyches and Kabalite affiliated warriors. Each half of the army would be led by a Succubus and an Archon respectively.

These two would be a bickering married couple looking to get the other killed in battle, so should make for some enjoyable games to find out who gets to keep the summer house on Commorragh and the new Raider parked in the Driveway.

So far I have only assembled 1 unit of warriors, and did some test models.

Wyches and an Archon (or Succubus?) on the way soon.

Let me know what you think :3

Also - I developed an obsession with trying to find an army I could paint orange.

this explains my choice in spot colour.

Test model #1:

Working out the armour scheme.

Test model #2:

Skin tone test and also working out the process to batch paint.

Owl test model #3 WIP:

Assembled unit:

Let me know what you think.

Also the macro mode on this camera has shown me how sloppy my line work is - so I will be retouching that.

That owl is fething amazing.

I love it. I love this idea, more owls. Please. I need this.

This concept has the potential to be a mash up of Fantasy 40K Awesomeness. Perhaps, I am excited easily, but I do like this.

ed: added something a bit more constructive.

I like the mix of corpse trees and models. I thought those branches were just on the bases, but you're integrating them in as backpacks!

These are some really cool DE. Like the basing scheme a lot and the owl is pretty awesome too.

Really nice concept. Pretty different to your usual DE. Are you going to introduce Wracks or Grotesques as you could make some very cool dryad mix ups with them units.

Very good looking... when you said an obsession with orange i was worried but i think it fits very nicely with the overall feel of the army.

nice to see someone else using the dryad bits. I am using the less foresty dryads as infected wraithbone wracks. I am also having a squad of warriors with a few dryad heads and arms as those that have willingly taken on the wraithbone virus.

The bases and branches are a real nice touch and go with the name. I like the bright hard highlgiht on the edges. Nice work!

I like your bickering married couple idea. Maybe they could have some wayward "teenage" kids, one of which is a Reaver, always riding his bike too fast (and making his momma worry!) and a daughter hanging out with "the wrong crowd" (i.e., Hellions) Maybe even a "crazy grandpa/uncle" Haemonculus. The possibilities are endless.

And I concur about the Owl. That is the coolest little accessory I have seen so far on the new DE (or anything in a while really) I have a raven (from WHFB Empire I think?) that will now be put to use in a similar way. Thanks for the idea (that I'm stealing shamelessly! )

Thanks broheim - I spent some time working on my new Wyches today. Looking very nice - pictures to come.

Gotta thank Knightley (Check out his Gray Nights in gallery) for his generosity for getting this unit off the ground. Be excited because they are leaping from branches. gotta love kitbash

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also on an incidental note - I need some help coming up with my Wych cult name, as well as the names for my Archon and my Succubus married couple. Obviously the surname would have to be the same, or perhaps hyphenated?!

She's too independent to just flat give up her last name maybe?

Marriage of convenience... Mandrake bastard children, or maybe the archon had a mistress that Succy killed?

Jealous rage much?

So aside from the information given - I figure that this family unit has a holiday home in a wonderful area of the Webway called the Corpse Forest. Think Brothers Grimm only ... er... better? Less mermaids and stuff.

In this forest they keep their maid estates as well as a menagerie of sub humans and warp creature (cue the Khymera.

Their wayward Daughter rides her Jetbike through the crystaline forests with some bad friends she has fallen in with (a lovely gang of hoodlums arranged by Mother to make Pop-Pop angry )

So yea - welcome to dysfunction.

Lay some names on me.

Cult of the Death's Light
Cult of the Corpse Fire
Cult of the Cloudless Corpse
Cult of the Headless Corpse
Cult of the Death's Servant

Also cheers for the pimping

Post by: elbrokendo

As promised I give you the first wave of the Cult of the Corpse Light.

I figure these wyches have been training in amongst the forest so long their reputation has reached that of Will-o-wisps, or also known as Corpse Lights.

They lure people into the forests and bequile them into leaving the relative safety of the path. (The path is a metaphor kids.)

Once their victims are out of sight they are silently killed... think Velociraptor or Ninja.

Unit en masse:

Hekatrix

Razor Flails:

Hydra Gauntlets:

Unit Owl:

And everyone else:

Let me know what you think.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/07 07:18:43

Post by: Knightley

Looks good, not sure I like the name of the unit though, the term "light" doesn't have enough dark connotations with it.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/07 12:46:21

Post by: Foxtale

But the word 'corpse' just balances out the lightness of it. It's a lightness but it is 'wrong'.

I like them, particularly the one leaping forwards with the razorflail. They're a really character filled unit.

So you have all these dryad bits just lying around spare? O_o

Post by: Enzephalon

Wooohooo....
I really love those.
Concerning the dynamic and awesome poses, and the modelling in general these are the best Dark Eldar I have seen yet.
Especially this guy here. He is excellent.
Jumping right into ones face.

BUT...
This one fails.
He looks like he is falling over. What about making his right arm pointing forward somehow?

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 05:36:15

Post by: Knightley

I agree with Enzephalon, that last one seems to be balanced in the wrong way, changing this flail arm to perhaps a sword/fist dagger might give a more dynamic pose?

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 06:06:20

Post by: elbrokendo

Lol - from a higher angle this model looks pretty awesome... its very balanced and zen

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok,

I have been unhappy with the extreme highlight colourscheme, both in implementation and look on the model - so I have decided to take 2 steps back and stick to painting in a style I am comfortable and well versed in.

These are a work in progress and you will see a highlight of scaly green and then possibly a 70/30 mix of scaly and codex grey.

tell me what you think.

Batch painted unit to date, WIP"

Previous scheme - to be adjusted (armour only):

Highlighting and tabard to be completed - but this is the basic look:

Out of focus comparison:

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 06:58:50

Post by: RiTides

Edit: In the last pic, is the one on the left the new scheme (WIP), and the one on the right the original?

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 07:29:11

Post by: bunnygurl

I like them both in their own ways.

I like the bright highlights on the one though it looks a little off on the helmet, and I like the muted one but it looks a bit too dark for me. I'm gonna stand firm and say I'm gonna be absolutely no help on this one. Sorry.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 08:26:52

Post by: Arakasi

I think GW has trained me to prefer the extreme highlights on the right

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 08:50:58

Post by: Foxtale

Mmm without the extreme edge highlights, you lose a lot of the definition and sharpness on the armour that makes them what they are.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 09:05:22

Post by: Knightley

I believe that the one on the right is the new one that WIP the one on the right is the old style.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 16:39:57

Post by: zipboom

That kit mix is a brilliant idea! Subscribed.

I'd prefer the extreme highlighting, though this could be GW brainwashing again.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 17:19:17

Post by: zaxaria

Why dont you base coat in black, then put on green highlights? and btw... where did you get the owls?

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 17:26:23

Post by: Charlatan

Lovin' it so far.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 17:36:10

Post by: Killmaimburnkillmaimburn

Ithink the brighter highlights define the armour better but is still too light. Why not use a green wash to knock it down a bit in brightness and then you should have a good middle ground, not too dark and not too bright.

The owls are from the WE Dryads kit as my housemate uses them in a similar way to this with her wood elves.

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2011/03/12 21:09:09

Post by: elbrokendo

I'll post some more pictures once the highlighting is done on the new scheme and get your opinions again - in person the models look much better imo.

Since Knightley asked so nice I have a treat for you.

A finished unit of Kabalite Warriors, and a test model for my wych squad that is 80% complete

Kabalite Warriors of the Corpse Forest:

(Stupid macro focus)

Full Unit:

And my Wych of the Corpse Light Cult.

Pretty happy with how they are looking so far.

I have work tomorrow so I won't get much done... but hey - it was a productive weekend.

Oh yea - and here is a comparison of the old and new schemes:

Tell me what you think of the change.

Please excuse the bad lighting also - just imagine everything is less yellow than it looks.

Digging the more subtle highlights, the before and after shows it quite well.

Thanks guys I am really happy with the new scheme - the other one just make me angry :|

For the Orange colour hair all I did was a base coat of Macharius Solar Orange, then a leviathan purple wash, then another coat of Macharius Solar Orange to make it a nice crisp colour.

I'm sorry I ever doubted you! That new scheme looks great! It's much 'softer' than the last one, and you haven't lost any armour detail at all! The orange looks great too.

Finally I give you the completed wych for my first unit.

I am in the process of batch painting the rest of the unit.

Also - I only just discovered that scaly green is out of production... when did that happen?!?! This last pot has to paint my entire army :( unless I find an alternative.

Anywho:

This is a shot of the skin tone that I settled on.

nice and simple as well. Goes like this: Deneb Stone - Leviathan purple wash - Deneb stone - ogryn flesh wash - Deneb stone... done!

Enjoy

If Scaly Green is no longer available, you could look at using a Vallejo (who make similar colours to GW) or Coat d'Arms (who I heard manufacture the GW paints and have the out of stock ones) replacement. Maelstrom sells both.

The wych looks great! Are you going to paint her gun similar to the rifles?

I adore the teal and orange color scheme - those two colors were practically made for each other lol

The wood elves pieces also fit perfectly with the Dark Eldar; they are very sparse and foreboding.

I appreciate the thing with the alliance between the Kabal and Wych Cult. It's pretty similar to the fluff behind my own Kabal.

Your ARMOR has a 2+ armor save, not your damn skull!

In 40k, the more badass you are, the less you need a helmet.

Didn't you know? All Terminators have a 2+ armoured skull. Because they're speccc marines.

Ugh. When are they going to make Chaos terminators scary again? At this point they're going to need to give them a rule like "re-roll everythign until you successfully kill the enemy model" to make them scary again compared to filthy loyalist termies...

I love the theme and especially the colour scheme. Can't wait to see more.

Impressive.

I wouldn't of thought turquoise and orange would work well as a colour scheme, but you've proved me wrong.

The Raider is my favourite, love the sail icon and how it just jinxes past the tree.

Awesome bro, you going to post the greys up or only the painted WIP's?

As promised - here is a taste of my reaver unit - about 50% done for the other 2 in the unit so far.

It is yet to be attached to the base - it is tempting to magnatise it - opinions?

Magnetizing is always good.

Otherwise the Reaver looks amazing but it could use some orange to tie it in with the rest of the army.

Where did you get those branch like bits on your Archon?
Top work here man.

I went back and did add some orange as an after thought. The rest of the unit has way more. Not to worry.

The tree on the archon comes from the dryad kit :3

I definitely agree: magnetise them.

It will make transport easier, and they will not fall off.

I'm really happy about the update. This is still the most characterful Dark Eldar army I've seen.
Beautiful and cohesive painting and awesome conversions.

Absolutely in love with everything about your army. The colors (very halloweeny), the name (love unique names), and the models. Keep up the good work. Subscribed.

How exactly did you get that tree to balance that raider?

The Kabal of the Corpse Forest. @ 2012/01/12 22:45:44

Post by: elbrokendo

@Iandroid: It doesn't actually balance well at all - lol - I need to magnatise it or pin it so its not constantly falling off the tree...

Haemonculus done!

A mission 5 hour scramble painting session at my local hobby store yielded this bad mama-jama....

It has a Casket of Flensing! Hence the gribble in the tree...

I like this (specially being I made my Haemonculi and Grots out of Dryads ), you've done it reasonably subtley and painted it well.

quick update - no pictures sorry... but I just start (and almost completed) my Razorwing Jetfighter. I even magnetised the giant tree on its base for easy transport. All the base colours done for the RWJF - pictures to come.

Removable tree!

Had to have a magnetised tree for transport reasons... also all the missiles and weapons are magnetised and can be swapped... pretty happy with how it turned out

Up to.... 1232pts with this new addition... pretty exciting - next push I think a unit of 10 scourges and a venom for my trueborn is in order.

Thoughts? Suggestions on next army update?

Oh! I also have arranged to swap my finecast Incubi for some of the new incubi but in metal. So they need a raider or a venom themselves... and then round it out with 2 ravagers.... and I'll be happy I think.

Now here's a blog with a nice colour combo of teal and orange. The tree motif is really nice too.

I'd say Scourges, would like to see what you'd do with the wings.

Not since the dawn of man has anyone witnessed anything as amazing as the creation of fire, and now, you have surpassed even that. Your voidraven is outstanding. I would love to see how those scourges are going to come out. I'd also love to see you do a squad of Incubi. Keep up the amazing work and I will keep posting.

This is very cool, giving me plenty of ideas for my planned Exodite/Dark Eldar army. I was already thinking about some sort of green and brown naturalistic colour scheme and its good to know that something very close to it looks great. I'm just waiting on my alternative Razorwing (the beasts not the fliers) models before I go on a massive painting binge but I'm definitely thinking about using Dryads as Wracks now.

Great stuff! The color choices are fantastic. Very subtle, and Dark Eldar. Everything looks really nice. Will the sword have anything else added, ie blood or rust? I dunno why but whenever I think of Dark Eldar I think there weapons would be rusty or bloody... But I guess that doesn't make any sense

ZOMG! That incubi is amazing. Your army makes me feel bad about mine. A recommendation, if you can for close up photos. Take them from a distance farther back, where they are clear, and then crop and zoom. If you have the capability. The close ups come out much better that way. Jealous of your army and I want to smash it with a hammer.

A Slaneesh Marine army - based around pretty warptalons and noise marines.
