The Bay Area Open is an 1,850 Warhammer 40K and 2,500 Fantasy tournament for the Bay Area of California (Contra Costa County Fairgrounds). The 40K Side will be 6 rounds, 4 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. Fantasy will either be a 5 round event with 3 games on Saturday and 2 on Sunday or a 6 round event with 4 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday dependent on turnout.
This tournament has been designed with the key concepts of simplicity, transparency and fun in mind. We have striven to create a system that as closely as possible uses the game design elements set forth in the core rule books. We feel that this allows a level playing field for all players to come and enjoy their favorite game without worrying about subjective scoring, or new scenarios they have never seen before. We want anyone to be able to come from any gaming background and play their best game with familiar rules and missions. For specifics, please visit our website linked at the top of this post.
Both 40K and Fantasy are using a Swiss style pairing system with no battle points. We will be using a W/L/D format as presented in the core rule books. This means that as you win games, you will play other players with the same record, and at the end, like the Highlander, there can be only one! The player to win the most games at the tournament's end will be declared the Tournament Champion!
The only non-core book mechanic we are using is the implementation of "Bracket Points." Bracket Points are bonus points you can earn during the course of the game. However, the Bracket Points DO NOT EFFECT THE GAME BEING PLAYED! They are NOT battle points. All they do is determine who will play up or down in the case of an odd number of players in either the winner's or loser's bracket. They will also be used to break ties for final standings, meaning if you have the same record as another player at the end of the tournament, whoever earned more Bracket Points will rank higher.
We will be using the INATFAQ.
Fantasy will be using GWFAQs.
As the books themselves are the only guide we need for making armies, this will be a no "comp" event, meaning you can bring any legal list! So long as your army is legal, then it is welcome at the Bay Area Open. There will be restrictions on the Fantasy side of the event on special characters and magic items. Check the site for details.
Sportsmanship will be a simple thumbs up, thumbs down affair. A thumb's down will come with a written explanation and will be shown to your opponent who will have the opportunity to explain their position. The first is a warning but if a player gets more then one, administrative action will be taken up to and including reversing a win, and expulsion from the event. The parameters for a thumbs down will be strictly enforced and clearly defined. In other words, we are all big boys and girls and the staff expects you to act as such. Don't be a douche.
Painting and playing, while equally important aspects of the hobby, are very different skill sets. The playing aspect of the game will be the tournament itself, which means if you are not an expert painter, you can still win the tournament champion award. The hobbyist aspect of the tournament will be completely separate, with judged painting and modeling according to a clearly defined rubric which is available to see on our website so you know exactly what to expect! This means, if you are a great painter, but only play casually and don't care about winning and losing, you can still win best painted! However, we also want to recognize those gamers who excel at both aspects of the hobby and so have included a renaissance man award to the player that scores best in both categories.
No one likes to play against unpainted armies though, so the 3 color tournament standard applies with primer counting as a color for our tournament. Use this as motivation to finally get that army finished!
The 40K Tournament Champion prize for our event will be an 1,850 point army of your choice!
The Fantasy Tournament Champion prize for our event will be a 1,500 point army of your choice!
And there are loads more prizes for multiple categories, door prizes, wooden spoon awards and a super secret prize to be given to every single attendee!
We are capping 40K at 64 players this year and Fantasy with a soft cap of 32, possibly 64 depending on preregistration figures.
We have gotten a very positive response for this event and expect to sell out rapidly! So if you want to be involved, please preregister ASAP! Preregistration will be free and will get a $5 discount on ticket price when the time comes to purchase a ticket ($45 per ticket, $48 through PayPal). After preregistration, we will open the doors for general registration which will be priced at $50 a ticket, $53 through PayPal. If any tickets are left, late registration (3 weeks out, up to the day of the event) will be $55 a ticket, $58 through PayPal.
To preregister send an email with your name, game system, army and if you will need a hotel room to the following email and you will receive a confirmation email back within 24 hours: bayareaopen40K@gmail.com

Logistics:
Location : July 30th-31st at the The Contra Costa County Fairgrounds 1201 West 10th St. Antioch, CA 94509
If you want to get a room, the very nice Days Inn and Suites, which is less than a mile from the event, let me know. We have worked a deal with the hotel that if we can book 10 rooms, they will only be $75 a night! http://www.stayantioch.com/index.php
If you are flying in, coordinate with us. You can take the BART (subway) in from either Oakland or San Fransisco out to Bay Point station and from there we will have a shuttle to pick people up!
We will be selling drinks and Pizza at the event, and while we won't be selling alcohol there, you can bring your own so long as you are over 21 years old!
Terrain: We pledge to have quality terrain on every board, particularly 40K where every board will have a true LoS blocking piece of terrain mid board. No open tables!
Tables: Each Table will be 8' x 4', so plenty of room! Also, the hall we have rented is HUGE! Plenty of room for your stuff and no crowding.
This is gonna be an amazing event! I expect it to sell out quickly.
I'm proud to announce that as a sanctioned Sprue Posse Event all results will be ELO tracked and the top 2 finishers of this event will be granted an automatic invite to the Sprue Posse Invitational 16 slot tournament in December held in Los Angeles.
Hey Reece, I told She Who Must Be Obeyed about this one. She's always wanted to see San Fran so we may be able to make this trip a family outing. Drive up Thursday, play in the city friday, game on Sat/Sun (need to find something in Antioch for them to do...or not), drive home monday.
Kills many birds with one stone.
Airfare is a straight beotch that weekend. I'll be pre-registering just in case but if airfare doesn't drop a bit by then I probably won't be able to make it. Lowest cost on expedia was $488...
The Drive from San Jose is not far, as White925 said. We go down there for tournaments and it is not a bad ride at all, especially not with some buddies.
@Cage00
We hope to see your Orks there and kicking some butt!
@Kevin Nash
InatFAQ, thanks for pointing that out, I amended the first post.
@DkellyJ
Looking forward to seeing you! The flight from SD to Oakland is only about $100 round trip and a short flight. We will have shuttle to get people to the event from the BART station or you can rent a car cheap. Looking forward to seeing you buddy.
@Brad
Dude, I hope you can make it but yeah, that is an expensive flight. Is that to SFO? Try Kayak.
@Dave
We will get a schedule up by tomorrow, that is a good thing to have for people coming from out of town. I hope some of the San Diego guys make the trip besides you and Kelly! We plan on starting early, so I think if you get in on Friday, you will be good to go. Getting home Sunday night shouldn't be a problem as we are only having 2 games.
@Brad
Well, I certainly hope you can make it, brotha. It would be good to see you. I have two guest beds and two couches at my pad so we could probably host you if you needed to save some dough on accommodation.
@Dugg
You best be there! I need a rematch after the ass kicking you gave me! Haha. I hope you can make it brotha, and sponsorship for those awesome crater markers would be killer.
@Doc
Don't forget to preregister to save your spot!
@Kirsanth
We hope you can make it. Like I said, we will have a shuttle from the BART station on Friday night and Sunday evening, so if you need a lift, we can help you out.
@Veritechc
Got your and your son's preregistration. We are in the process of posting on BoLS, Warseer, B&C and a few local forums, too. We will also be on at least one PodCast. If you can spread the word at your local game club, that would be awesome, thanks!
Preregistration slots are already filling up, so if you want to jump in on this, please do so quickly!
I have most of my army built just need a couple more pieces and then I'll start painting them up and hopefully I will have a painted army for this event.
Don't forget to preregister! Spots are gong quick, we are already into double digit preregistration. Make sure you save a spot if you plan on going. I hope to see you guys there!
@Doc Dragon
Please pm me your email address too, so that I can let you know when registration is open.

Thanks. Already posted the event at our Northern California board Brotherhood of Mutants.
@Huckleberry
That is a cash price for people who can viably get us money, mostly locals. I imagine the vast majority of people will pay via PayPal for ease and security reasons. The Prereg price has to be paid early or it will roll over into normal registration pricing which is $5 more.
@Warboss Russ
I hope you can make it, brotha!
@Wolflord Patrick
Bummer that you can't make it, that stinks. Oh well, camping in Big Bear with the family sounds pretty awesome. And thanks a million for helping to spread the word, we really appreciate it.
Now Carlos has to come to represent the Woltime! Aooooooooo!!

Shown to the offending player by the TO or marking player?

Okay, I see this as being a good way to minimize douche-baggery. However, your process sounds a bit confrontational.
While I'm *used* to confrontation (Middle-School Teacher for 11 years ... in South-Central LA) and have no problem pointing out, "Oh, yeah, I'm giving you a Poor mark because I thought you're Moves were extra long and I can't believe you let me forget that the Immoblizied result should have been a Wreck, given my melta's AP1 ..." Etc.
I'm thinking that other players might not have *quite* the chutzpah to want to hash such a thing out. I think most would rather mark 'em down and wait for the next round without having to tell someone that they fudged a rule or possibly cheated.
I understand the intention of this Sportsmanship Marking System and applaud it.
But, I'd like to hear if this Sportsmanship mechanic is something you've done before, Reecius? Can you relate an anecdote or two on how this would pan out? Especially when that Game/Round is over?
I have done this type of sports before and I found it to be the best of a bad situation.
Ideally, sports would not be needed. We are all adults and should act as such.
Unfortunately, some people are gakky and will act like douches when given the chance. Those few d-bags amongst us tend to spoil it for everyone.
On the same note, certain people who are passive aggressive, or a sore loser, etc. will use a sports system to unfairly ding their opponent to hurt their chances of winning an event where sports affects the actual score.
So, we do need some type of sportsmanship to keep said douches in line but to limit the other types of douches from hurting people unfairly.
In order to find a middle ground that accomplishes both goals, we have implemented a system that is a bit of a bastard of multiple systems.
The open thumbs up thumbs down system has a really harsh consequence if actually used. This means that the sore loser will most likely be shamed into not using it as they know that the impact can be huge and that they will not have the luxury of anonymity to hide behind. It is not a simple little one or two point ding they can rationalize to themselves.
By making it open and having to justify the reason for administering it, the jerk can not simply mark a thumbs down and leave it be as the judge will show the other player what it says (to answer one of your questions) and that player will be allowed to defend themselves.
The rationale is that this will eliminate all but legitimate grievances from affecting someone's performance in the tournament. Only those people who REALLY feel that they were wronged will stand up in the face of all this push back to say something about it. By giving one freebie it also allows for those rare games when otherwise cool people play someone that just rubs them the wrong way.
Ultimately, we want a system that is as noninvasive as possible but still applies just punishment to A-holes only when necessitated. We don't want to give players the tools to impact one another's scores casually. It should only come into play when something really, really goes wrong.
A bit long winded, but I hope it answers your question.
So I talked to Reecius and we are adding 2 Warmachine tournaments to this also! One each day. I will be the one officiating them and will get the full details to you guys shortly too! Hope I did not scoop you
Menelker wrote:So I talked to Reecius and we are adding 2 Warmachine tournaments to this also! One each day. I will be the one officiating them and will get the full details to you guys shortly too! Hope I did not scoop you
Sounds good, if one of you guys could let me know when you post up the info for warmachine that would be great. I need to update the post on warseer.
Damn....I really wanted to go to this.....gotta go to summer school to save $1200 on my degree in Physical Therapy so wont have an army ready in time. If you do anymore saturday tournaments or open play give me a heads up.
2 Warmachine Tournaments? So is this some kind of Apoc Gladiator style Tournament? That sounds pretty cool. How many points and can I use my Stompa in it?
@italiaplaya: I am going to get the Info to Reece today and will get it forwarded on too.
@Dugg: There will be one complete warmachine tourney each day. Since we can finish a 5 round tourney in one day in warmachine I figured I would just have one each day. I may mix up the format between the days. Maybe 35 points one day, 50 the other. Going to finalize it today.
@Defeatmyarmy
only $45 for a ticket if you give me cash, Dan. Not bad at all, and I am sure you can get your hands on an army if you want to play.
We're having a tournament at Black Diamond Games this Saturday if you are interested.
@PLatuan4th
Yeah, I am just not that into Fantasy personally anymore. I have not played since Adepticon.
Bummer you can't make it out! I am going to guilt trip Ozzymandias into coming!
@Menelker
One thing to consider, we are going to be going dice down on the last event at 4pm on Sunday, so maybe the larger points tournament should be on Saturday when there is more time?
I'll try to make a more open visit sometime(Botcon's got a very full schedule, not including after hours parties by the various forums). The events you guys have are probably the best way, especially as I want to get more involved in the national scene.

Automatically Appended Next Post: Reece can you amend this into the first post? ^^^^ Thanks!
So is the hotel close enough to the fair grounds to walk, or...would people still need to rent a car to get back and forth? Confused?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Sorry, meant to say, "I'm confused."
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and one other thing: Will Codex Witch Hunters be allowed? The Codex is still available from GW website (despite the Daemon Hunters impending release), which makes me think that it is still legal and all that good stuff.
Cant wait now that Im pregistered. A system that only hurts you if your a complete douche and dont have to hire a master class to paint your army for a chance at first is how I think all tournies should be. Hope to see more events like this in the future!!!
That is exactly what we wanted to create, a system where people could come and play the game they know and love and compete in areas they are strongest in. We are glad you like what you are seeing so far!
Big announcement!
The Bay Area Open will be featured in not one, but two podcasts!
Actually when my wife and I got married on that day she won a decently prestigious local music industry award so we went over there for a while in wedding attire ;-)

Reecius wrote:Hahaha, Yakface, you are too literal, but that is a good thing as I am sure if you were confused, then others were too. So it is good to clear it up.
I had wondered about that, too, but was just going to ask you this weekend.
We just got the black box; it's pretty intense. Some numerical adjustments here and there, but otherwise everything is as it was in the leaked PDF. Lots of food for thought.
As far as I'm concerned, the Teleport Shunt move is going to shake things up a lot.
Back on topic, I've got myself and a couple interested in coming but we're still sorting out schedules and logistics...
Reece, if I pre-reg myself and them boys, how much time do I have to adjust/modify things before I have to go final?
italiaplaya wrote:Who would have even wanted to use the old daemon hunter codex, instead of the new grey knights one haha?
Depends. We haven't (or at least I haven't) seen the new GK codex. It might not be as good as the old Daemonhunters....who knows?
New doesn't equal better.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ecspecially not with GW.
Seeing as the old Codex was basically at the bottom of the bucket and a lower tier army. I dont see how the new codex could be much worst. Now that I think about it, what recent codex releases have been "weak"?

Matter of opinion, dude. The DH codex really wasen't that great by itself, but the allies it offered to IG players was great, not to mention the fluff that it gave to the game. I really don't have the time for a debate. Take it as you will.

Cheers, "playa".
Helping another codex is a matter on its own, and is an invalid case. The Daemon Hunter Codex WAS a lower tier army and had lots of trouble standing up to other codex's currently out. However, no problem we can chop it up at the Bay Area Open. Seeing as I am one of the people that is running it.
I look forward to it. I have a friend who dominated in 3rd Ed. with the DH., and its too bad he doesn't play anymore (had kids, career picked up, etc.) becuase he'd probably love that they've re-done the Codex.
I've always felt that no army is "lower tier" (no insult meant by the quotation marks, merely quoting), it just takes the right type of player (not playa, lol) to field it effectivly. However, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and again, I look forward to meeting you at the Bay Area Open.
I'll be wearing the O.D. Green t-shirt with the picture of a Vietcong/N.V.A. soldier w/ an AK-47 on the back of it. (want to make sure you can find me) I look forward to discussing the merits of the new DH/GK army list versus the 3rd Ed. version with you.
Cheers!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and just to answer the question, I think that the recent Dark Eldar codex was kind of weak. But then again, while the theme behind their race worked well fluff-wise, it has never worked well on the table-top; it can be built the right way (i.e., to win games), but this build results in an army list that isen't much fun to play with for any length of time.

I gotta disagree, DE are overpowering against non-hordes. This one guy at my FLGS had the dreaded 21 lance with 36 poison shots on vypers 1850 army and the only thing thats beat it so far was IG leafblower getting turn 1. (tournament had 10-14 people) The only thing that prevented me from conceding the game after 1/2 of my stuff was gone (obliterators, dual lash, transport tanks and 2/3 troops) was he couldnt hit when he needed to and I made almost every cover save that game.
@disdainful you have till a month before the event but we would really like to know before that so we can prepare for the actual number thanks and hope to see you there.

I play a pretty Infantry heavy IG force, so my past experiences might a little bias. @Reecius: sorry for getting so off-topic, my bad.
@Cortez667
No worries, dude. We're all here to talk about 40K!
@thread
So, 40K has less than 20 spots left! Jump on them if you want to be a part of the event.
We will be opening up general registration soon, as well.
Looking forward to seeing you guys there!
And.....I tracked down and will be hiring the notorious "Wonderwoman" to work the Bay Area Open! She is smoking hot, into nerd culture (her brother is a comic book artist) and is a really nice person to boot. She is also a stand-up comedian, so she will be adding a lot of fun to the event!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Schedule question: why are some of the rounds two and a half hours, while others are only one and a half? Is this normal?
Reecius wrote:All the rounds are 2 and a half hours.
Your schedule has round 4 lasting from 5:30-7, which is 1.5 hours. I assume we'll go until 8?
(Also, zero time between rounds is impractical for a large event - you need enough time to collect the results from those tables that use the whole time, run calculations, and get new assignments posted.)

@Janthkin
The rounds are actually 2:15, with 15 for data entry and pairings. I will specify that in the schedule.
Sounds good. I didn't mean to nit-pick, I was just trying to clarify. I actually find the 2:15 games reassuring. It gives my horde-heavy IG enough time to make a telling impact.
Gosh, I know its still monthes away, and I do have tournys between now and then, but I'm really looking forward to this!
I thought you already had an official "Recces sac holder"? I forgot his name, what was it again? Should I also mention that he was under age. Bad Reece!
@Cortez667
Yeah we are stoked, too! 40K only has about 13 spots left, it is filling up super fast, and we have only had preregistration open for less than two weeks!
No worries about nit-picking, it is good to have people point out typos and such, we appreciate it.
@Thread
Wonderwoman's job is going to be to the ring girl, letting everyone know how long they have in each round and maybe to MC as well considering she is a stand-up comic.
Honestly, she is really attractive and fun too, which that alone will make the event more fun.
And Dugg, I know you are jealous I replaced you with a younger sac holder, but I will always remember you as my first! Hahaha!

(tournament had 10-14 people) The only thing that prevented me from conceding the game after 1/2 of my stuff was gone (obliterators, dual lash, transport tanks and 2/3 troops) was he couldnt hit when he needed to and I made almost every cover save that game.
The dreaded 21 DL, 3 venom list?
...huh.
Stupid IG lists. Ruining the game for the rest of us!

Not sure if you got my message, but I think the glitch was my computer, not the site. Switched from firefox to internet explorer and registration went through.
Haha, I can try! She is actually genuinely into nerd culture, she has a comic book collection?! And yeah Mike, I know the feeling, been going non-stop. once you have a minute just give me a call and we'll hammer out the details.
And there are 6 spots left for 40K, so get em while they're hot, fellas!
Haha, thanks! Or it's what happens when you have too many irons in the fire at once.

I think we need to find a bar to hang out after the tournament just because! I was thinking about that and it is a really good idea. I will look into setting up a mixer for after Day 1 of the event.

EJ Phair is not that far, and has fantastic micro-brews and a ton of space. Great food too.
Reecius wrote:Thanks for the suggestion! I will definitely look into that.
I've been thinking of suggesting we try and contact them to do a small event there. They've done some magic events there and 40k plus beer would be pretty fantastic.
Since the demand for 40K has been so big, we are opening up another 64 slots and adding a 7th round. This will be a hard cap as we can't handle more players than this for the first year.
We will keep the low ticket price through April, and then we will be bumping up the price to $50 ($53 through PayPal) May 1st.
So if you want to get in on the fun and missed your ticket the first go around, jump on them quick as they are already starting to move.
doc dragon wrote:Really? 7 games in 2 days? I better bring my defibrillator.
Reece just got back from Adepticon, and discovered it is possible to survive 12 games in 3 days, in spite of being old as dirt*. So now, we all get to suffer!
Actually, I don't mind, what with being local. I feel for anyone traveling home Sunday night, though - that could be rough. I assume the 7th game will be on Sunday?
*Dude was too tired to come eat breakfast on Friday, just because he stayed up drinking until 3 AM. Everyone ELSE who was drinking with him was there, mind you.
@Doc
Yeah, I know it is a long day, but a lot of tournaments are going this way. In order to stay true to our philosophy and use a true Swiss system, we need the extra round.
It isn't that bad really, as Janthkin said, we just did 12 games in 3 days and it was a blast!
@Janthkin
Yes, I am the wussy that didn't go to breakfast, but I had a savage hangover. I still managed to go 4-0 that day, somehow!
Would love to come and check this event out its right down the road from my house. I would love to play too but I am too much of a newb as far as playing goes.
Registered for 40k. Or at least, I sent Reece some money, with the assumption that a ticket to the tourney has probably got my name on it.
Looks to be a lot of fun. I finally get to play a tournament, instead of just running them! Now to see if I can rope in a couple people for the WM side, and traveling arrangements, of course.
unityvybe wrote:Would love to come and check this event out its right down the road from my house. I would love to play too but I am too much of a newb as far as playing goes.
Actually you can never be to much of a newb. Well maybe if you started last week...
Honestly as long as you don't mind loosing, tournaments are a GREAT way to learn the game quickly and get involved in the Mini's community. Just as long as you know your model rules and the basic rules you are good. You will be surprised by what your opponent may have, but that goes with any game until you have played for a while. You will learn a ton and come out with a new outlook on the game. Just my 2 cents.

SWEET. Send them my way if they have any questions.
Hey guys, sorry I have been absent, work is dominating my life right now.
The Days Inn and Suites will be offering us $75 a night for a double, you just have to tell them you are with our group.
Game 7 has been updated!
@Unityvybe
Like Menelker said, this is a great way to learn more about the game. The best way to get involved is just to jump right in. You may not win your game,s but you will learn a ton.
We'd love to have you! It is very nice here in the summer months. A little hot, but clear skies and beautiful scenery.
Also, the Independent Characters Podcast will be having live coverage of our event as they did with Adpeticon! Multiple camera angels of the top games with live commentary, streaming over the internet as the action happens! We are very excited about this as it was such a cool part of the final 16 at Adpeticon.
I wanted to come to this but wasn't sure I would be able to get time off of work. Then on Tuesday my office found out that we are all being laid off in mid July. So at least the silver lining is that now I have all the time I need for hobby stuff. Hopefully I can convince at least a few friends to drive up from LA. As soon as I hear back from them I am signing up regardless.
@Unityvybe This will be the first big event I am attending and I'm playing an army I just started at the beginning of the year. Hoping to learn a lot of tricks and tactics from veterans while I'm there and just meeting some more players from the local area.
@Huckleberry
Yes, I agree. The best way to learn is to just jump in and do it.
Not according to some of the comment trolls over at BoLS! I tried to support this view on there and kept getting lambasted by a few of the regular commenters, tough crowd. I agree though, you should come and experience not only a tournament but a HUGE tournament with great players and lots of games crammed together in an environment where you can learn a lot just from talking to your peers after games let alone the large number of games you'll actually play.
disdainful wrote:Those who can, do. Those who can't, comment!
Hahaha, I am going to use that!
@Phazeal
We have about 80 for 40K, and 10 for Fantasy so far. But, I got the L2 guys on board, they are going to be bringing their crew. I expect we will fill the Fantasy side up.
Warmachine is lagging behind a bit, but we're working on that, too.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @Huckleberry
Yeah, I don't know what it is with the BoLS regulars, but there are some major Debbie Downers over there. Some of those guys that post are just obnoxious.
It would be awesome to have you, Jay. Maybe next year. I am going to try and make Da Boyz GT this year, so long as work doesn't get in the way I will be there.
Reece, Payment sent via PayPal.
Looking forward to seeing you again.
She Who Must Be Obeyed decided not to come along on this trip (but i now owe her a Frisco trip on her BD).
And to anyone that has written me and not received a response recently, I apologize, work has been dominating my life, 7 days a week. I should have free time in the next week but I have been totally consumed and a bit off the grid lately.
A video interview of some of the Adepticon finalists, including yours truly!
The Independent characters will be covering the finals of our event. Check out their website for some more cool video coverage of Adpeticon to get an idea of what it will be like at the Bay Area Open.
Battle Bunker Games, formerly Gamers Guild, in Antioch, CA will be hosting a Friday night (July 29th) meet and greet for our event! It is a great, newly renovated store with a ton of space for gaming and some old school Battletech gaming machines! The kind you get inside and play.
The store is right next to the Days Inn and Suites where a lot of guys will be staying and super close to the event location.

Question about bracket points, and apologies if these have been answered somewhere else:
For 'Head Hunter', a player has to kill the enemy's highest-point-cost HQ. If I'm facing, say, a Dark Eldar player who has a single HQ choice, an Archon or something, and also a Haemonculus Ancient and Haemonculus whose individual costs are less than, but whose total points add up to more than, the other HQ choice, do I have just have to kill the Archon, as the highest-point-cost HQ model, or do I have to kill both of the Haemonculi, as the highest-point-costHQ Choice?
For 'Preserve your Forces', is it half rounded up, or rounded down? If I have five troops choices, do I have to have at least three still alive to get the point, or is two enough?
For 'King of the Hill', I presume that we're not talking about being 'fully within' 6" of the center, that is, if one model from the unit is within the distance then the point is earned, the same way that if one Ork is within range of the KFF the whole unit gets the save?
Awesome, thanks! I figured getting some clarifications now would be preferable to having to deal with it when it might matter for someone, and I know from experience that these kind of tiebreakers are very important in a format like this.
Definitely looking forward to it; now I just have to get the paintbrush moving, or it's going to be default Orks for me!
Grimgob is coming up from LA, too. I have not heard from Shep or any of those guys but I will bug them to make the trip up since we go to all of their events!
@Blasto
I just need to know if you will be staying in the hotel, and what army you are bringing. You should have received a confirmation email by now with those questions.
Hey, I wore a robe too, and I got last place! I guess only Christian was cool enough to pull it off ;-)
And yakface, you better be there or I will denounce your status as 40k internet royalty!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's a little data for you guys to chew on, too.
We have a really nice spread of armies coming out. Not what I expected to be honest, but it just goes to show that most people simply play what they own.
Here is a breakdown of the most prevalent armies to the least prevalent as reported so far (a lot of people still don't know what they are bringing or haven't told me):
1.) Blood Angels
2.) Orks
3.) Marines/Dark Eldar
4.) Guard/Wolves
5.) Dark Angels/Eldar/Chaos Space Marines/Grey Knights
6.) Tau/Tyranids
7.) Black Templars
8.) Daemons
Sadly no Witch Hunters or Crons have signed up or reported yet, but that spread is nice! Not the Guard/Wolf spam a lot of people feared. As a matter of fact, there are nearly twice as many Ork or DE players as wolves and Guard combined!
So, if anyone was worried about not getting to face a variety of armies, I think the data so far indicates that won't be the case.
Also, I would suggest not trying to meta off of this as it is not set in stone. I am just putting this information out there so that people can check it out as I really enjoy this sort of thing myself.
Just bought tickets for myself and my son. I added notes to the paypal transaction so you would know which ticket was for each of us. Looking forward to beating up on all of you, lol
I was thinking of bringing Sisters...but it looks like the WD-Dex is going to eliminate half my army (allies) and drop the points down on the other half...making my 1850 list transform into a 1250 list with no models available to retool new units.
Oh well, theirs always Vulkan Melta-spam.
Just as a reminder: there are a few people who have registered but not paid for their ticket. I sent you guys an email, but in case it went to junk I want to say it here too.
Spots are going fast and we will hold your preregistration spots until the 5th of July, after that they go back up for grabs, so finalize the deal soon!
Looking forward to seeing you all at the tournament.
Just wonderin' how many 40k spots are left. Got a bunch of people in SoCal interested in going but we can't finalize anything until about a week from now. Unless we have to because there are only like 4 spots remaining.
All List need to be sent to me on or before Friday the 22nd.. That Friday is the deadline. List will be considered late after 12am that Friday/Saturday.
Late List or changed list before the tournament will by defauilt miss out on door prizes and other random prizes giving out thru out the weekend.
If you do change your list before the tournament it is mandatory that you let me know. As well as give me a look thru of your new list.
Hey guys, sorry for any delays in response. I just moved and am still getting the internet set up in my new place. Lists can be army builder or a spreadsheet. I'll post an example on the website.
And if you want to come everyone, tickets have been flying out the past week. Hop on them quick before it fills up.,
I'm still waiting on the internet to get hooked up at my new place, so sorry to anyone who is waiting on any emails from me. I only have my phone at present. Should be back in action by Tuesday.
@Reece or whomever is making the calls on the rulez
Inat hasnt answered this question yet and it keeps coming up in my games of late and I would like a ruling for this event ahead of time. On Ork vehicles with red paint, if you moved 7 inches does the enemy hit you on 4+ or 6+?
I've ran into several people lately that play it 6+. When I looked it up and started an open discussion about it with friends we came to the conclusion that worded the way it is it could go either way . It doesnt mention anything about combat or crusing speed, it just lets you go another inch without any penaltys (I think thats the word they use). Is getting hit on 4+ when you move 7 inches a penalty? 7 inches is crusing speed but you can shoot because of no penalty for moving that extra inch. and the example they give is bollocks because it makes it more confusing. Yak said they were going to address it on the next INAT update but that wont be for awhile and I wanted to get it cleared before the day. Reece heard the argument at the SiS3 (when I could not boarding plank a BW that went 13 inches) but didn't give an opinion and now that its his show I'd like to hear what he thinks. I don't care either way I would just like a clear answer before this argument comes up at the GT.
For the bao, unless yakface addresses it in the next inatFAQ which comes out before the event, red paint will be ruled as you move the distance measured for all purposes of the other player interacting with the unit (to hit, etc.) But count as moving the modified distance for your purposes (shooting, disembarking, etc.).
So, you move your battlewagon 7" and you count as having moved 6" but your opponent hits on 6s. You go 13" and can still disembark, etc.
Let me know if you need further clarification. If anyone has any information in a FAQ to dispute this, now's the time to speak up.
no clairification beyond that needed, its crystal. I hope INAT does answer this soon as its the only thing I'm not completly sure about in the Ork codex rules and I usally let the other player decide until its in print somewhere. Thanks for the quick response Reece.
Not to derail the thread, but why would it count as moving cruising speed for me and not for the Ork player? It says in the codex that it counts as moving in the lesser speed bracket. The specific example it gives, is that you move 13" but count as moving 12". Therefore you are still moving cruising speed and not flat out.
So why would that be different for the 6"-7" bump?
This will almost literally never affect me during play, but I was just wondering why it went that way.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's something from the BRBfaq that may help concerning roads
Q: Does a vehicle that has used its extra move for being
on a road to move over 12” count as having moved at
cruising speed for all purposes, for example the
embarking and disembarking of troops? (p57)
A: Yes.
Were going to rule it this way because it makes the most sense because if a vehicle moves over 6" then in an assault the vehicle is considered to have been moving at cruising speed ie you need 6's to hit. Just like a fast vehicle that moves 12" the player that moved the vehicle still counts as moving the vehicle only combat speed yet if the opposing player assaults the vehicle then he hits on 6's because the vehicle moved over 6". hope this helps clarify it for you dok and we're excited to have you attend our event.
Also, for those of us that paid, when are you mailing out the tickets?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also I bought a ticket last month (June 20 ish) but i don't see my name on the list for the 40k event. Was it already full when i bought my ticket?
Hey red lives, there is no actual physical ticket. I have a spreadsheet with everyone's names on it and you will check in at the event and get your name tag, etc.
Pm me your full name and I'll go through our records. You should have received an email confirmation from both PayPal and me.

I told him to do the samething the other day haha.
With that excuse you could probably get time off whenever you wanted! Might not be so good for your dating life, though.
Due to technical issues with the site, we won't be able to provide live coverage of the top tables. However, thanks to the incredibly generous offer of big Jim, we will have a staff photographer taking pictures of the event! If possible, we'll upload pictures of the top tables with commentary on the fly to keep people informed!
Lastly, we've only got about 20 tickets left for 40k, so if anyone out there is dragging their feet, grab a ticket soon as they're going fast. Don't miss out on the fun!
That email's going out tomorrow. Comcast keeps screwing up internet installation at my new place so I keep pushing it back. I'll get it out tomorrow though, one way or another.
Anyone going to the Bay Area open have a spare painted Battlewagon they'd be willing to let me borrow for the event?
I really want to play some games with one, but I'm not going to be able finish painting mine in time.
Specifically I'm looking for something that can represent an open-topped Battlewagon with a Deff Rolla and a single big shoota (preferebly with raid paint & grot riggers, but those I can probably get away with playing 'counts-as').
Check with Matt Reid too, I think he has one. I am headed up to run the Warmachine tournament and he should be there for one day too. I can transport it up.
Get them to us by the Wednesday before the tournament. I have every book at home and know most codexes so I can go over them quick. Earlierthan that is better, but by then is fine.
