Ello OT forum ^.^

Thought I'd make a thread to see what people are driving these days/what you wish you could be driving these days.

This would be my car: http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/179266_495630208079_646348079_5938329_2781869_n.jpg
(not sure how to put the actual picture in but links are the best i can do)
If you can guess what it is I'll give you a cookie.

Its getting a nice 350 small block dropped in it soon, came from some Oval racing people we met who didnt need the engine. Apparently got pulled outta a 75 corvette.
here it is: http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/180195_10150101798733080_646348079_6160321_2094578_n.jpg

Howeva, this is what i really wish i had: http://www.topgear.com/uk/assets/cms/eea0e14d-819b-4d2f-a483-fd4f7610ec74/Large%20Image.jpg?p=110304_10:42
Please note I'm only 19. I guess you could say I'm a fan of the classics. (then again this ^ is an E-type concept car that is actually going to be a production car. that being said its a limited production but either way...just look at it...)

Meh I don't drive, it is insanely expensive for a 17 year old male to get insurance.

Hell cars are just expensive in general.

Yeah cars are very expensive. Thats why my POS was bought from craigslist ^.^
My old man has an 06 mustang GT.
my grandad is a chevy man like myself and he has a 2010 corvette grand sport and...
i believe a.. 1970 corvette up in new jersey.
our roommate loves his nazi cars and drives a VW passat and in our garage resides a VW golf with a chameleon paint job.

Currently I drive a battered French registered Mondeo diesel.

It's a real chick-magnet.

Prior to that, I've had all manner of various motors, most only held together by rust and willpower.

As far as I'm concerned however, four wheels are only for moving the body. Two wheels moves the soul.

That being said, I wouldn't say no to a Pagani Zonda or a Dino 246.

Yes it probably is at this point.

and a new motor
Personally I'd say no to a pagani zonda if i had the choice between that and any other super car.

Really? Blimey! I think it's one of the nicest looking, nicest sounding cars ever made, in my opinion! But each to his own, hehe.

I'm determined to have at least one Ferrari in my garage too, one day, though not any of the modern ones. I like the classics, from the Dino, through to the 308/328 era. I'd have an F40 too, as I think it's probably the most distinctive car ever made, outside of the Countach.

Though I'd give up having any of them for an E-Type. Back in the real world I'm definitely getting myself and MGB or Midget at some point in the (reasonably) near future.

The Car Thread @ 2011/03/06 00:04:34

Post by: Insanityphr33k

In the reasonable future i'd be pretty happy trolling craigslist for old cars until i find another thing i can mess around with.
I respect the zonda, but it just looks a bit too ridiculous for me. If i had a choice for a super car I'd gladly take either a ford GT, the latest corvette, or a porsche 911. I love italian cars, but I dont think i'd want to have one. I prefer cars i can actually drive everyday regardless if there super cars or classical cars. A car is used to get to places and that is how I'll use them.

Actually my latest favorite for super cars is the nissan GTr. and i usually hate japanese cars.

I love jags in general but the E-type in my opinion is pretty much the closest you can come to art with a car (thats excluding the alfa romeo 8C)
and there remaking it which just made my entire year. That being said it'll probably be limited production and i'll probably NEVER see one in real life, but *shrug*.

Plus european cars just seem to be so much more beautiful then american cars. Some american cars can be certainly striking or intimidating (dodge viper, camaro, challenger), or they are just a bit too brash (corvettes, although i'd take one anyway there just amazing cars).

Not trying to insult anyone but the chrysler 300c is a terrible car that is trying desperately to be a bentley and its failing so terrible that you might as well murder them. They look so ridiculous and just ugly as a whole. I hate the 08 charger for similar reasons. It doesn't look like a good car, it looks like a cheap knockoff. I believe the only reason people buy them is cuz there cheap. And because caddillac decided to make decent cars again (CTV is pretty damn good). The new charger looks quite good in my opinion i cant wait to see that one on the road. The challengers okay too.

If i really wanted a sport sedan I'd take a jag personally. 1 of those older ones with the giant V12 in it that looks so completely nondescript until you slam the gas.

Pretty damn quick. The difference between an ST and RS is a similar sort of leap that you find going from a standard Focus to an ST.

I drive a 92 Jeep Wrangler with a 2.5L 4 banger I picked up on craigslist. Its cold, noisy as all get out, the stiffest ride I've ever been in, and will usually only get over 65 downhill with a favorable wind, but for some reason I love the damned thing.

After school I might get rid of it for a Jeep Rubicon, depending on whether or not I get a job that requires a lot of freeway miles. That thing is a dog on the freeways!

So you can't even pull one at a junkyard to fix the problem yourself.

Jeeps over 200k running strong are common as all get out, and i can find and fix almost everything on this jeep myself. I can even pull diagnostic codes myself by turning the key over 3 times. Of course its got terrible suspension but everyone knows that.

Any american ford kinda sucks. And I guess i only really like the old chevys. Since every stupid idiot in this day and age wants a car thats as slow as possible everythings a boring, ugly piece of . Personally I'd make sure that anyone who drives better at least have more then a passing interest in cars. I live in florida, where everyones old, doesn't drive fast at all, and the rest are a bunch of retards with engines. I cannot stand that all the actually good cars are usually too expensive, and the insurance is even worse. Then everyone gets relegated to some camry or something. And then its so utterly annoying that 2/3'rds of the commercials i see are for safety features on a car that I dont care about? I never understood the fascination with safety features when most of them mess up the weight and fuel economy of the car. I almost decided not to fix the air conditioning because it can take away from the engines performance. then i remembered I'm in florida and I have an all black interior.

My car has 2 safety feature: seat belts and a very very very very mean frame.

also 944 turbo: not as good as the 911 turbo. showing that 11's are better then 44's.

I spent a few years in Florida, I don't know how the hell people managed to live there before the invention of A/C. My A/C broke for 3 days in my apartment and mold started growing EVERYWHERE. I was still finding it when I moved out.

I've moved beyond my fascination with driving really fast, either I'm getting old or I just realized how much money I've wasted on tickets during my lead foot years.

I love my suburban, but in an ideal world this is what I would have:

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor -- to replace the suburban as my hauling crap around and going anywhere car.

And. .

1970 Boss 302 Mustang -- for going fast and making people gak their pants with jealousy.

And one more. . .

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Superleggera -- for going REALLY fast.

Also they finally have a new boss 302!

and yeah.
they bore me.

I dont have a fascination for going fast as much as i do have a fascination for people going the correct speed limit and if its a 2 lane road and there blocking me then by LETTING ME GET PAST THEM THE STUPID TWITS. I do honestly HATE any complete idiot yapping on a phone and blocking me in because they dont have the brain power to speed up a little to let me by when i've been riding there bumper for the past two lights! -_-

And trucks are NOT boring, not by a long shot. Go off road, and I mean REAL, manly off road, not just on a dirt road. Im talking, splash down into water pits that should flood your gak. Smash over trees that get in the way, figure out how to get unstuck from a mud pit. A first timer, can never physically last more then a couple hours, its just to taxing on your badass meter.

My wife owns a Honda Jazz 5-door (hatchback).
It's a good little car. Economical with a bit of pep where it is needed. It's also sparkly metallic blue.

Fits enough crap in it for us to do a couple of week's holiday with room still for passengers. It does us.

While I would like a Diablo, there are too many tools around here who can't drive and I'd be afraid of them writing me off.

At the moment I have a Honda Civic, it does alright for me and it's a company car so I'm not about to complain. Yamaha R1 and Honda CRF250X for real giggles.

Insanityphr33k wrote:I love british cars, but I'm more of a fan of jaguars. My problem with aston is that they only make sports cars. Jags at least make sedans, sport sedans, sport coupes and what not.

The most aston has is the rapide, which to admit is nice.

Jaguar haven't been British for over 20 years - the only truly British manufacturers left that I'm aware of are TVR and Noble, numerous kit car manufacturers notwithstanding. Jaguar have lost all of their style IMO, they have nothing to set them apart from any other top marque.

The only Jag I'd really want to own is an XJ220, or a C-X75 if it makes it to production.

If I was going for a big American-engined car, it would be one of these:

Ultima GTR

Factory Five GTM

Maybe one day a Lotus Exige or Noble M12, and if I get the time and space I'll be building either an MK Indy, Fisher Fury or (for preference) a Sylva J15.

If I won the lottery, I would pay Mazda to build this http://images.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&source=imghp&biw=1276&bih=609&q=mazda+furai&gbv=2&aq=0&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=mazda+fura

Whether jag is british or not isnt really the question for me. I like them regardless. *shrug*
If i wanted an american car i'd take a vette or a ford GT.

I do love the 04 civic type R hatchback. very fun little bastard of a car. as well as the supra, celica and 93 rx 7.

I do have a bit of a secret love for tuner cars.

My take on japanese cars is that there essentially have no...soul about them. I think that changes once you put your own touch to your car.
It's like there letting you put the soul into them.
Yes i know its rather corny but thats what i think.

I mean you dont buy a 458 italia or a gallardo because its got a decent boot.

is that a ford GT that crashed through a motorsport shop?

That's a common opinion that I hear (among non-Jap bike owners especially) and one I don't really agree with. It usually comes down to the fact that Japanese vehicles are (for the most part) reliable and good value for money. German cars tend to avoid the same accusations as they are pitched at executive levels and up. Nissan, Mistubishi and Subaru put out some great performance models and have real pedigree; Mazda are about the only manufacturer to have persisted with a Wankel engine (I prefer the looks of the RX-7 to the RX-8 personally, and the option of a twin turbo model helps) and Subaru are the only manufacturer I'm aware of using a boxer engine (other than some BMW bikes {edit - and Porsche - bit of an oversight!}). Skylines (and the GT-R) are classic midnight racers, 350Z/370Z are amazing value quality sports cars.

Going back to bikes as an example, hurling a Suzuki TL1000 down a bumpy road is going to really bring its 'character' out.

Not picking on the US here, but my impression of American cars is of bland design (Ford, Vauxhall (GM)) with seriously underperforming engines (Ford GT excluded) - I don't call that character. The current Corvette is quoted on Wiki at 400bhp from a 6l engine - Mitsubishi are getting that power out of a 2l. Japan really pushes the technological boundaries and that is what I respect. I mean, a Corvette model (not sure if they've changed it, but this was definitely post-2000) had leaf spring rear suspension - leaf springs!!! It's the same setup as on my Transit van. There's not really a place for a superceded technology that is nearly 100 years old (or possibly older, I'm not sure). American cars have a reputation for not being able to handle, but to be fair I understand corners aren't as common in the US compared to other companies.

Done properly, those Chevy small block V8s are amazing - a 720bhp version in an Ultima GTR set the fastest time around Top Gear's test track, beating a Ferrari FXX.

Post by: KingCracker

Ulver - No your right. When you compare American designed vehicles, they are way behind the rest of the world in terms of technology they are built from. European cars and Japanese cars just trounce us. Buts its also a difference in culture. Look at our top sellers, its the Ford F150, the Toyota Tundra, Chevy Silverado. They are trucks, we are large vehicle people through and through, so its not a surprise that truck tech is seen in smaller vehicles too. If I wanted a super fancy nice car, yes Id look across the pond in a snap, but for something tough and rugged that will pull a building down, Im looking in my back yard.

The Car Thread @ 2011/03/10 13:47:13

Post by: Perkustin

Are American cars even Tough and rugged? (I am taking this to mean reliable and good off road). I was of the opinion that american cars were very poorly made and bad offroad compared to say a similarly priced Mitsibushi Pick-up. Also as top gear showed the Toyota Hilux is the Pinnacle of reliability. EDIT: speaking of reliability my car seems to be on the brink again, serious back-firage when i start 'er up, plus a slight dip in performance between 50 and 60; annoying when you wanna overtake.

@Chromedog 'i dont drive' = 'i CANT drive'.

The Car Thread @ 2011/03/10 13:51:31

Post by: KingCracker

American trucks are tough and rugged. Ive seen my share of fancy "offroad" European cars try their merit offroad, and they usually break somewhere. I can take a bone stock pick up, doesnt matter Ford or Chevy or Dodge, and can whell the hell out of them. My offroader was a stock F150 with some super swampers, and a snorkel for deep water. It never broke down, I would put it in holes so deep the water would rush in over the windows, it was scary,I came out every time. But again, Id see guys bring in even modded European vehicles and just fail at the start of pushing their limits.

Our cars on the other hand......well, some run forever, but only on roads

You can do it in both. Its true that if your good with a manual, youll do better with one offroad. But mine was an auto, as is almost half the offroaders youll find. Its not hard, its very easy actually, you just will get stuck easier and cant raise the RPMs to get out like you can in a manual.

That must be an early 2000's or 1 of the lower priced corvettes because I'm checking the prices on the chevy website and if they have THAT kinda suspension on the Z-6 or the ZR1 then i might have ta relinquish my love of them.
That being said, i probably wont.

Although i agree with you. Good example is 70's cars. Nearly everyones could actually take a turn. and ours didnt really turn.
they really sort of "aimed" for it.

I say this partially out of experience as the handling on my malibu isn't exactly top notch yet.

That being said I'm not sure if the car companies here are just stupid, poor, or filled with a bunch of executive retards. (GM doesn't count there already a bunch of executive retards).

Thankfully at least 1 company here in the US may soon be in good hands. Dodge-chrysler is now owned by the italian car company Fiat. And there pretty damn good cars. I'm actually hoping to get a hold of the fiat 500 when it takes its jump over here in 2012. Also means that chrysler might actually go back to making decent cars again.

@Insanityphr33k - Really?? Fiat own Dodge/Chrysler?? I don't know if that's good or bad really... Fiat aren't exactly renowned for build quality over here. I had a Fiat Stilo before my current Mazda 6 and whilst it's basic options where really good the overall feel was not great, the Mazda on the other hand is fantastic... But, if you want a really badly built car, anything made by Peuguot is the winner...

Back to US cars, I've had a few hire cars whilst visiting Florida and I've loved them all, especially the Chrysler 300C and Dodge Charger, the only thing I don't get is the auto gearbox, when you go to pull away they take several seconds to react, whereas my Mazda, which is also an auto, reacts as soon as I touch the accelerator / gas (I do also drive manual / stick). Is that just a hire car feature or is it the norm on American cars??

BTW, I've changed my want list...

..and it's a Honda...

And for pick-up lovers

Fiat's not bad tho. the panda, 500, and.....that front wheel drive convertible are both rather nice.

but ey anythings better then chrysler at this point.

If the delay you noticed where on the dodge cars could have been the throttle there drive by wire and stock they leave alot to be desired. My Jeep has one and it sucked i replaced it when they did the hemi install.

Newer american cars are getting to be very good and reliable. I used to like the rice burners but never like that they had no balls off the line. But again this was years ago and i am sure there some some strong ones out there now,

The 5.7 in my JK at the rear wheel has 405 HP so besides being fun off road it fun on road to lol.
