The Legion of Thorns - Army plan (29 April 2011):
Using the Cool Before Rules approach, this army is not strictly game legal, primarily intended for Armies on Parade in September.
I've listed them in the intended creation order:
- COMPLETE - Marine squad - The Stormbringers - so far 8 - 2 troops, 4 Havocs (heavy weapons) 2 Banner bearers
- COMPLETE - 2 charging Berzerkers
- COMPLETE- 2 x Raptor variants... not your usual CSM raptors (can't stand those)
- BUILT - Terminator pair - The Mournblades ... not painted and may yet become donor-models towards my new Inqu][sitor project...
- COMPLETE- Defiler biped heavy support variant - maybe...

I really dig the spear. I plan on converting a Chaos Lord soon with something similar... So I echo the sentiment. Where'd ya get it?

It looks like a WOC sword stuck on the end of a banner to me.
35419
Post by: Lamby
Limbo and Shelegelah - thanks! Killmaimburnkillmaimburn - that's correct! The spear uses the blade and cross-guard from Warriors of Chaos sword, hand and grip section from other Warriors of Chaos weapons, and the skull-spike thingy from a Chaos Terminator Lord kit. All that plus lots of careful drilling and pinning - next time I make one I'll photograph the bits pre-gluing if you like. Automatically Appended Next Post:

Very nice
are you going without horns on all the helmets? seems like these two have had theirs removed ^^
can we hear about what you have in mind for the army?

LiveforFun666 - Thanks! Horns are generally non-combat friendly to the wearer! (Not a big fan of the CSM horned helmets!) (Edit) Army plan: see edited first post Meanwhile, another intel transmission from the scout-servitor...

Needs some greenstuff patching-up around the fur of the cloak, but otherwise pretty happy with this guy.
WoC cloak attachment idea was courtesy of this great dakkadakka tutorial http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/313112.page, (Thanks Hyenajoe!)
though I decided to sculpt extra cloak over the (non-exsistent) shoulder pads rather than Hyenajoe's cut-shoulder-pads-in-half method as per the tutorial.

۞ Jack ۞, crimsonfist832, logg_frogg and Miss Dee - thanks!
I've designed the army around the CSM codex mostly because I like the pics in the Codex!!!
Also, there's cool things like Obliterators and Summoned Daemons in it - must admit though I have never played CSMs before, only Loyalists, so I'm wide open to suggestions.
Been a busy week at work diving, so no updates yet - my next one is in bits so I might photograph a bit of a how-to montage maybe...

I love using those cloaks with Chaos Marines, it really provides very unique and flavorful models. I actually stumbled across that exact same tutorial and used it to create my Chosen! Shelegelah - Thanks - Command has inserted a *CLASSIFIED* operative into the *CLASSIFIED* Area of Operations (AO) to provide imagery to answer your special Request for Intel: So you can hopefully see I didn't sculpt the entire whole cloak, just smeared GS around a plastic WoC cloak to blend edges and hide the shoulder pads. Soundtrack to the Legion of Thorns: NiNE iNCH NAiLs - The Wretched (from The Fragile) Shelegelah - Thanks! Scout elements within the *CLASSIFIED* AO have sighted only 4 heretics of the Legion of Thorns to date. Astartes Scout Sniper *CLASSIFIED* was inserted to gather further imagery and subsequent analysis of subject Stormbringer Marine 2: Further infiltration into the Legion-held Area of Operations are currently rating a very high level risk of compromise. prototype_X - thanks - it was a Terminator autocannon and a SM heavy bolter that's become a Legion of Thorns mini-gun - bringing the pain oh yeah! Miss Dee - thanks - and I second that motion... ... however, just as I was starting on the sixth Stormbringer (pics in a few days!), the first Stormbringer: suffered a major combat wound that proved to be fatal (i.e. he fell onto the floor and I rolled my chair over him!) He was a test build and I was never that happy with him apart from the spear, so the Fates have decreed he gets a rebuild, where he'll get a new head, as his lumpy one is going to heretic 6 (in progress).

The Legion of Thorns is gaining a mind of it's own! The Chaos Marine squad - The Stormbringers - almost number 7 now - 2 CSMs, 2 Havocs (heavy weapons) 2 Banner bearers and an Aspiring Champion - with pics of the last two (2nd Banner and the AC) up soon. At some stage I may expand the Havocs into a 5-man squad of their own, but shortly this first squad will be constructed, and I'll be moving onto a trio of charging Berzerkers - these will initially be Stormbringers but later will expand to 5 for playability. A little more GS to do and then pics! Happy Easter!

Taking the advice and going with the power-axe, with some minor changes.

Did you pin the spear of your WIP Chaos Lord? The blade looks a bit crooked. Easily fixed at this stage I hope.
When are we going to see some paint? Do you have a scheme worked out yet?
Keep up the good work! Suscribed!

Post by: Lamby
Rawson - Thanks! Some answers for you: Did you pin the spear of your WIP Chaos Lord? The spear is pinned but I fluffed the job and yep, it's bent - however that guy is receiving a re-construction because: 1 - I'm not that fond of him overall, 2 - He doesn't look 'right' to me when lined up with the other Stormbringers, and 3 - He's about 3mm shorter than everyone else! (seems common with the older metal models) So he's back to WIP... pics soon! When are we going to see some paint? Haha - paint... after I finish 5 Blood Raven's Terminators for Captain Tylerius (aka my son Tyler...)!!! Black metallics with a greenish zenithal highlight - I'm not fond of the generally garish chaos color schemes

Thanks Malika2! So - talking color schemes and fluff (hellooo any fluff guru's out there?) would it be too far a stretch to have the Legion of Thorns be a World Eaters splinter faction, allowing me to use the pre-Heresy World Eaters scheme of white and blue? One reason to go this way is because blood splatter looks awesome on white - and what's a Chaos army without blood splatter?

Love the idea for the cowls for the terminators, I am tempted to try one myself using the skull chaos knight pad
I think it would look like the terminator's head was inside a daemon's mouth
35419
Post by: Lamby
Asylum_Inmate - Thanks! - I was unable to source those particular Chaos Knight shoulder pads as they were my first choice... be interested to see how they come out.
So talking color schemes, I'm leaning toward the Legion being a mid-Heresy splinter faction of the World Eaters and therefore use the pre-Heresy WE paint scheme, but making the white a dirty bone like the shoulder pads on my Blood Ravens.
I had thought of a dirty metallic but with the new Grey Knights out there's just too many metallic mini's getting around imho!
... and segue to current standard rant re: Metal replaced by resin... A converter's dream - unless of course you've already bought the mini(s) IN METAL!!!
39150
Post by: Asylum_Inmate
The bone colour sounds like it might look really cool, and if you are basing them mid-heresy it would make sense that they wouldn't have time to stop to clean and polish their armour as there is more important stuff happening, so the dirty look would fit perfectly

Post by: Lamby
Rawson, bigmek35 - Thanks! After a long work-related hiatus I finally have some construction time coming this weekend, so more pics soon! On painting - A while back I had the following conversation (on Warseer) about color: AtmanAbecedarian said: Bone white would be a good color. Blue gives you a lot of options that it won't clash with. What about a metallic? The image of a deep blue with a dull metallic grey seems fitting to me. Just a thought.
To which Lamby answered: I had thought of a dirty metallic but with the new Grey Knights out there's just too many metallic mini's getting around imho!
But after many attempts at white (takes too long to make look nice) and bone (just ick!) and a mixture of the two (baby poo brown being the result!) in the end I've come back to metallics haha!!! Pics tomorrow of 2 test minis, one in metal and blue (World Eater splinter group) and one in metal and green and bronze (more home-made Legion of Thorns scheme)... and then I'll be asking for help to choose!

Green + Bronze test scheme with black weapon: Probably need to make the green tinge in the armour less subtle, and may use Hawk Turquoise to add some spot color in the form of verdigris on the bronze? Any suggestions, Dakka?
43612
Post by: Rawson
It's not that I don't like any of them, but none of the options so far have any 'pop' (oddly enough, that came out 'poop' on the first go). Maybe the more green version would look good. Let's see that! What about doing a grey primary color instead of metallic? You could still use the tinge of green idea even. I also think there are too many metallic marines running around these days.
Keep it up!

Id say go with some dark colours
35419
Post by: Lamby
dantay_xv - Thanks - Blue shoulder pads is definitely leaning toward World Eater's successors, so here's another color test, in blue, now with bronze trim: and a backpack shot: mmm... maybe a bit too Ultramarine with the trim? Pluxtheduck - Thanks! Miss Dee - Ok, let's try a darker grey/blue metal, but with the bronze pads and backpack to try and get some pop: I like the beaten look of the bronze and I think the blue/grey metal looks better than the green... mmm So, what next?
43612
Post by: Rawson
The blue/silver with bronze is my favorite so far, but it still seems like a lot of metallics. It might just seem that way now, though. Once the eyes, skulls, wings, etc. are also done, maybe it won't be so shiny.
35419
Post by: Lamby
Rawson - Thanks! - will try more dirtying down on the next test models - instead of the silver metallics, what about Codex Grey, glazed blue and scratched with silver?
Since these two loyalist scum are basically clogged with too much paint, I bought a CSM 3-pack that'll be the next test models.
But before getting to those I did a cheeky backpack swap onto the World Eater guy:

Yep - Same blue shoulder pads with bronze trim and bronze backpack... or blue backpack?
34329
Post by: dantay_xv
The silver and blue, with bronze trim looks wicked, again the brassy-ness ties into the modern worldeaters and their liking for all things red and bronze.

If I go with this scheme I'll add more purple to the red, and use blue wash instead of brown.

I think either of those colour schemes will look great, are you going to adding battle damage or weathering to them?
My opinion, for what its worth is that the 'character' that you have modeled into them doesn't suggest new marines these look like hardened veterans. Some subtle damage/weathering might just be that thing that really makes them pop, even more that the choice of colours, if you get my meaning

Moonshine - thanks! - I'm liking the red, and that model only took about 90 minutes start to finish

Thanks, noted and agreed - this guy was a tester, didn't put any effort into battle damage, chipping, weathering but it's definitely needed - someone on Warseer suggested also implementing a contrasting color, so I'm going to just touch this guy up a little with more regal blue verdigris and eyes and see how he looks.

I think i'll have to try my hand at making some of those terminators.
They look absolutely amazing.
39150
Post by: Asylum_Inmate
They are a little too bornze-y from certain angles, what about adding some colour to the shin guard to break up the bronze a bit. Have you thought about going literal with the name and adding a thorn pattern on them?
35419
Post by: Lamby
Medium of Death - Thanks!
Asylum_Inmate - I'm still not sold on the whole bronze look myself, I think it's too close to Christian Byrne's Blood Wolves, and as you said, too bronze-y in places - though I haven't added dirt and verdigris, which does tend to break up the bronze a bit more - note the bronze backpack.
As for a thorn pattern... maybe
I'm working on a green armour scheme with the bronze pads at the moment, pics soon.
Meanwhile, a second look at the Raptor variant Heretic:
39150
Post by: Asylum_Inmate
Hmmm a two tone green (ie thorn pattern over darker green) might make an interestting pseudo camoflage pattern which might work out pretty cool

I was in my local GW today and had a long conversation with one of the really good painters in there, and he pretty much said the same thing, and we did a little experiment with using tin bitz as the under-layer for shading - looks good and easy to do.
Expect a test mini will be done during the week, but I'm taking the next few hobby sessions off painting to finish the Terminator Lord and maybe another raptor or two...

Post by: Da Boss
I think your test minis all look a bit too bright for the subject matter, though perhaps you are going for a bright colour look. Or it could be the photos.

That axe is brutal looking
Have you thought about doing a mini with a bardbed or thorny whip as a weapons, would look good from a fluff standpoint
Have you done a paint test for the thorn pattern pseudo camoflage, im tempted to try that myself if you dont do it, I think it would look cool.
34329
Post by: dantay_xv
I like that idea Asylum Inmate, as long as he is careful not to make it too look too Biel-Tan if you go down that route though.... hmmm thorns, blood droplets from stbbing yourself on said thorns.... khorne likes blood..... would make using BA parts a good option for all the blood iconography
And also +1 for the brutal looking axe, which mini is it from??
35419
Post by: Lamby
Asylum_Inmate, dantay_xv - Thanks for commenting! I'm not confident enough with freehand to make a Thorn icon look as good as it would need to be, so I might make a decal design - I'm much better with Photoshop than a paintbrush! I am concerned about the inevitable Dark Eldar referencing by using either DE bitz or decals... not at all sure where to go with this, so I'm going to paint the boys up over the next few weeks and not worry about it, and see what my brain comes up with though there *may* be a model coming with a barbed whip... ...Blood... must have blood... The axe is from a metal Chaos Khorne Exalted Hero - now only available in Finecast yuk!
39150
Post by: Asylum_Inmate
I would imagine a a thorn pattern would fairly simple if you avoid trying to make it actually look like thorns and treat it more like a camoflage pattern, you can be more free-form with the way you approach it. Basically you would be giving the impression of thorns instead of actually pating thorns. If you want to give your photoshop skills a work out try painting it onto the most recent colour test pic and see how it looks.

Bigfish - correct, that's a Loota bit - and due to project hyperactivity - that is, my imagination is a lot faster than my building/painting - I have lots of bitz, including Orks...
I bought a box of Loota's and Burna's to go into a planned Orks http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/328959.page vs Marines diorama which I stopped working on to concentrate on the Marines in my - Ironclad - blog, and the Legion of Thorns (see sig for links - shameless plug!)

I have no idea about stats, I don't play, I just build and (sometimes) paint... Night Titan is out - people just think I can't spell - not sure what to call it... Did you scratch build that lock? What's the fluff behind the daemon cage? Powers the engine? Rawson - Thanks - the whole grey hatch, lock and chains are one of the Defiler hatches. The yellow parts are 1/35th scale tank wheels. Fluff (as it were) provided in the above report - but to simplify the answer, I saw these on the models listed above and either read somewhere or (unlikely) came up with the idea that these type of Chaos engines are not possessed as such, but harness daemon power in the boiler-like thing. Daemon-cage is just my name for the thing - I plan on building another one for my Forge-fiend kit bash... (still in design stage!) Dez wrote:Night Creeper. Looking darn cool! Looks like a dark mockery of a Penitent Engine.
Will you be counting it as a Forgefiend?

Squigsquasher wrote:Looking darn cool! Looks like a dark mockery of a Penitent Engine.

Squigsquasher - Thanks!
Yes - this is my Forgefiend counts-as, the cannons are from that kit except I'm replacing the barrels and the ugly skull-mouth barrel ends as they didn't fit the feel of this guy.
My intent was definitely a Dark Mechanicus version of a Penitent Engine... I meant to have his legs hanging down and chained in, but lost them to my dog...
The remainder of the Forgefiend/Maulerfiend kit will become my Maulerfiend... modified of course! Though I intend now to paint this Legion before building anymore mosnter models - this Stalker nearly broke me!
Cheers!

Hi Miss Dee - Been experimenting with a bone and gold scheme... and a black and silver scheme... lots of experimentation but no real decisions yet.
BTW - love Babylon 5, the Shadows were great.

Talking paint again: Bone armour with bronze trim, and maybe red shoulder pads... or green armour with gold trim - which one says Legion of Thorns? (Sample pics to follow...) PS - Something weird happens whenever I update - when I hit post the page jumps to some advertisement page away from Dakka but double posts - any way to stop this happening?

bigfish - Thanks for commenting - of course I meant GREEN shoulder pads (not red) - I have found a nice mix of Castellan Green darks and Nurgling Flesh highlights for the green, but still struggling with the bone - test mini hopefully tonight!
Cheers!

Me too bigfish Well, it became apparent overnight that I am failing painting class atm! To define that statement, I tried a bone recipe - gak awful chalky mess that was *slightly better* with a wash, but the big awful was trying to paint the evil bling on the CSMs, especially around the legs... I'm too scared to post a pic as the resulting test mini will burn out your eyes and induce projectile vomiting... The other thing is I need a faster method because I've promised my son he and I will fight Legion of Thorns vs Blood Ravens over Christmas break - nothing like a promise to an 11 year old to make a deadline! So my fall-back is that I can paint darker schemes - see my Blood Ravens - so good bye bone and gold and hello Castellan green and bare metal - one last test mini (please Dark Gods only one more...) Cheers!

Heretic Stormbringer Marine 1:
And Heretic Stormbringer Marine 2:
Both of these guys needed some minor sanding and greenstuff repairs but finally they're getting paint!
The green is Castellan Green, and the roughly applied red shading is a mix of Baal Red Wash, Dark Flesh and a tint of Blood Red.

bigfish - the bone would have looked awesome but I personally couldn't paint it well, nor fast... and I would dearly love to have this force painted and done - Thanks!
This green is coming from the old Masterclass Mounted Chaos Warrior, so the highlights will be Nurgling Flesh (the old Rotting Flesh), with gold trim... Chaos Marine trim = frustrating!

Good looking lamby found this digging through dakka and read every page looking at all the inspiration you put out. I have a slight problem with the green as it looks too nurgley to me any way. have you thought about doing the trim in a metallic blue i think that would make them pop in my opinion. can't wait to see more.

alabamaheretic - Thanks! both for looking and commenting, I appreciate any and all c&c.
As you will have seen I have been back and forth over paint schemes on the Legion for nearly 2 years.
I have a tendency to over think and paint test after test...
After the failed bone/gold attempt (and a comment from my son - "Dad, finish the Chaos dudes so I can beat them up with my Blood Ravens!") I went for green because alongside red and blue it's the easiest base color to paint (for me).
Any green on a Chaos force is going to steer viewers to think 'Nurgle' - personally I have not really steered the Legion toward any particular affiliation, though this highlight layer of Nurgling Flesh has pushed them that direction for sure!
The green has a glaze layer to go, which will soften transitions and brighten it more, and then battle damage and a 'dirty' oil wash, which will darken it again - and the trim will be gold and silver, suitably grimy.
As well as paint, there's a rebuild of Sgt Slaughter in the works (after a dog related incident rendered him into component bits), a rebuild of the 3rd Terminator (I was never happy with it) and a lone special-ops style sniper.
Mmmm... maybe a mauler-fiend conversion, if I can recover from the extended nightmare that the Stalker build became...
Cheers!

Well I have faith in you about the less nurglefication process. my other thinking about the metallic blue was a odd nod to the legion they split from ( World Eaters if your still coming fromt aht route) I'm actually glad you did not go with the brass and silver motif to me they looked like Iron warriors minus the hazard stripes.
I am a big fan of green and silver though so that will look good i think and maybe for a touch of color toss in like one or two bits of another color or make the lenses a fantastic purple. Again just a thought and take it at your leisure.
Again keep up the great work.

alabamaheretic - Thanks for the faith - hoping not to disappoint!
( btw - I've dropped the World Eater splinter faction angle - too many Heresy Era World Eaters getting around at the moment.)
2 Stormbringer Havocs up to the same green stage - the mini-gun dude is still one of my better conversions (im-humble-o!)
Note the modelling touch-ups on the Flamer dude - covered over the too-obviously-converted-from-a-plasma-gun plasma coil bit and added a nice Dragonforge cable, and changed out the promethium tanks on the backpack - I intend to paint the ubiquitous 40k hazard stripes on the green bit on the flamer.

looks good are you going to weather them any or are they taking care of their armor
35419
Post by: Lamby
alabamaheretic - Thanks - lots of weathering/damage to come to break up the green!
No new pics (tomorrow!) but after green glazing the first pair I then spent 2 hours (!) painting the brown 'undercoat' on the armour trim - does anyone else find CSM 'evil bling' fethin tedious to paint?
35419
Post by: Lamby
Darker green after glazing, and brown undercoat for the golds... tedious...
next up - black undercoat the metal, then battle damage!

Hi again Dakka, long time no post... or paint. But once again I'm back at the Legion, pics to follow (soon) Lamby wrote:"...I went for green because alongside red and blue it's the easiest base color to paint (for me).
Unfortunately this statement turned out to be completely false - the green has turned into a 6 layer nightmare... 7 if you include chipping... 8 if you include washing... the list goes on. On top of the green, the gold trim on CSMs is proving a tedious nightmare I hadn't envisaged... After getting the two Stormbringers to pre-wash stage, and 4 others through the green process, I had a painting meltdown and had to walk away. Lamby wrote:"...As well as paint, there's a rebuild of Sgt Slaughter in the works (after a dog related incident rendered him into component bits), a rebuild of the 3rd Terminator (I was never happy with it) and a lone special-ops style sniper. So eventually the bitz for the 3rd Terminator have arrived after a trip to Australia and back to San Diego via Washington, so I've started the rebuild on him. Sgt Slaughter may or may not get re-done - while I like his weapon, the stance is too similar to the other Havocs and I've yet to decide where to go with him. The sniper is sitting awaiting green-stuff... And this mauler-fiend... I'm going to paint the Stalker first before I start building another big mech - plus I'm hatin' on the armour trim too much atm to even contemplate the eventual painting of such a blinged up nightmare... though the new Chaos mutant beasty thingy has me thinking 'BITZ!' again... So that's where the Legion resides atm... Thanks for looking. Cheers!

Novelist - Thanks! The idea for the night vision shots was work-inspired ... As were the intel-report style updates. Thatguy - Thanks... And me too (on the finished!) As I continue to work away on these about 32 minutes per every 2nd day or so, I loathe more and more the batch-style of painting, and thus I swear that after this round of The Legion is complete I will hereafter only ever build a model and then paint it! Post by: Lamby
I went a lot simpler on these bases than my previous army (Blood Ravens) trying for a more subtle canvas to let the mini shine. Step 1: PVA glue down medium shale and random bit of junk metal (well, plastic, but you get the idea...) Step 2: Once that's dry, smear that Vallejo plastic putty (in the pic) on the rest of the base, and sprinkle it with baking soda to get some texture. When it's all dry, liberally paint the whole thing with 50/50 PVA/water mix Step 3: Spray black undercoat. ... more to follow. Cheers!

Post by: Lamby
Due to overwhelming demand, the basing steps continue...
Step 4:
Dark Flesh wash.
Step 5:
Iyanden Darksun dry brush.
Step 6:
Space Wolves Grey dry brush - imho this is still the best dry-brush paint Citadel ever produced
Step 7+8:
Boltgun Metal dry brush the metal scrap
then,
Nuln Oil wash the lot.
Step 9:
Dark Flesh rust/chipping effect using sponge and/or really old brush
And this base is done!
