Hello there campers.
Here begins a new Plog for my new Orks. Now leaving only eldar and nids out of my monstrous collection.
I wanted to tone down the skin colour from the snot/goblin green run-o-the-mill tide so tested out a cammo green/bleach bone mix.
I'm a member of the now redundant 800 Naval Air Squadron, AKA Naval Strike Wing and I'm keen for my squadrons heraldry to live on in my orks. So they will be pusser's grey with plenty of black and white chequers [like grey goffs I suppose]. And as an aircraft engineer, I'll be stuffing in plenty of defkoptas for my fluff
Here's a reference image... don't mind the three fat matlots in the way XD
I'm quite pleased with it. Glad to hear the good opinions of the Dakka community... so what do you think of my Nob? [XD oh the connotations]

Looking good so far. Good skills on the highlighting.

Post by: RSJake
That is a really good Green! I would definately go for it! as for your Naval Strike Wing heritage, how about converting those defkoptas into something that looks like a miniature jet? I think that would be cool!

Great green on your orks, cool name aswell

Post by: Davidian
cheers guys, cammo green it is then.
Jake 1+ mate. Love the idea. I reckon it will be a doddle to take the rotors off and fasion stubby wings. They're are 'jetbikes' so it's a good representation. Sterling stuff mate Automatically Appended Next Post: Another first today.
My first ever rust effect. It was nail biting but it came out alright. Still need to work on my technique a little but a resounding success
I based the metal in Tin Bitz, stippled with boltgun metal then washed the recesses with watered down blazing orange and finished with delvian mud wash lightly into the recesses.
also you can see the pusser's grey uniforms

I agree that's a great green. Definitely brighter and different than the usual, but it looks great!

Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
Wow that ork looks great. The green skin is quite nice. I think you are going to need at least one fighta-Bomba and lots of looted flying stuff, keep up the good work!
38346
Post by: Davidian
nearly finished my first Nob, done a bit more weathering. Considering I've never even tried it before, I'm getting right into it not sure how to approach his massive chin XD metallic/checkers/splash of colour? what d'yall think?
Think these are better pics too, think I need to sort out a light box.

Post by: TheChronoTrigger
It would be sweet to see it a bright orky color, like orange or red or yellow, maybe with a checkered stripe along the bottom. and some nice weathering.
Looking great otherwise. Love the skin and the axe is great

wow these orks look good good good, orks aren't pussers though they are supposed to be bad azzez hehe... I would really like to know how you painted this guy from the ground up! THe checks and weathering and skin are very very nice... well done!

I like it. That is one fine paintjob. Cant wait to see an entire army of orks that look that good. Keep it up!

Very nice. I like my ork skin darker but yours is very well done. Your weathering looks really great also. Your are gonna have a great looking Mob when it is all done.
Green is Best!

The red base throws me off a little, mainly 'cause I've never seen a red base before, but the overall mini looks great. Loving the weathering and checker patterns.

BF's new BFF wiv a Big Choppa, knocked up from 2 choppas from the AoBR Nobz

and a kombi-scorcha Nob (so glad that making a squad of complete individuals is beneficial in game terms)
This was made with 2 sluggas and the back-slung burna from one of the old gorka morka mekboyz

30344
Post by: monkeytroll
Yeah, liking what I see here. That's a nice tone for the skin, nice work on the checks and the rust. Looking forward to when you start on some air support.

Post by: shingouki
nice work mate,i bet those checks were a right pain in the arse to get right.
38346
Post by: Davidian
you'd be surprised how easy they are.
This is my first ever shot at checkers, rust and whethering.
In fact, when I do the next one, I'll pop in a step by step and you'll see how easy it is
I reposed the kombi-scorcha because it's ridiculously off balance and prepped my next nob to receive a power klaw off a meganob which is currently in the post with a job lot of bits that I got for a steal and the last dude lost his top-knot... 'cause after much gorping at it, I decided it looked gay XD

I just heard of this game thing called Robogear, it's apparently like Warhammer 40k for young kids...anyway, they have these little jet things with huge engines that would look perfect for your Deff Squadrun! It is pictured below. You could chop off the roll bars and have an Ork popping his head up wearing goggles or something! I think it would look awesome! Anyway, just thought you'd like to see it. When I do get around to building up my Ork mob, I'm thinking of going this route!
Hey, any updates? We need pics dude!

props for finding them mate. Gonna check out the dimentions first but I might have to have one regardless [if it looks too small I'll just stick a grot in it ]
not much to update atm. assembled my first 3 deffkoptas and bodged together my warboss with 5 nobz in total so far.
I have just done the skin on my next 2 so here they are... I'm moving house on tuesday so I've been a bit preoccupied as you can imagine.

I think that Robogear game is what my flyers were made from.
38346
Post by: Davidian
hmm, I think I prefer the first one but thanks all the same.
Here's a unit shot of what I'm working on.
The next 2 Nobz have a TL-shoota and a power klaw.
This unit is just for use in a 650pt league... I think for bigger games they will need a painboy and a truck at least.
They're all AoBR models that I got cheap [needed some tlc.. and in places repair] I repositioned the head of the warboss a little and it gave the mini much more of a dynamic pose. win. and gave him an iron gob.

38346
Post by: Davidian
I picked up the green paint today..... it felt gooooood.
probably should finish those two Nobz but they aren't featuring in my 1500, so they're last in line now.... a very... very... long line [well, not very long but really slow moving line... actually... really long and really slow moving. Oish!]
*Edit* I've also been re considering my colour scheme. Since I have a balanced mix of AT/AI shooting/combat vehicles/infantry I have decided to make my clan Da Blood Axes, Zognuts Irongob's Divishun, Da Deff Skwadron!
I'm gonna use the grey as a base for urban cammo similar to this one;

Airfix 1;72 is but somebody does it in 1;48 or 1;35 which will work perfectly for it...
38346
Post by: Davidian
aye, found 1:48 might have to wait to get it though. Just bought a battlewagon, upgrade sprue, painboy & 2 boxes of lootas..... so all my spending money gone.
Cammo pants done.... in hindsight, I probably should have tried it out on a model other than my warboss first but it came out alright so no drama!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Quick update, Irongob is finished.
The original Irongob on my test-nob was well executed but It definitely needed an injection of colour.
I took inspiration from the 'Eavy Metal team's Ghazkul Thrakka.... or copied it to the detail XD I like, Hope you do to.

Really really nice stuff on here. Liking the colour scheme and the concept. tbh i would have wanted to make the battle wagon based on the eldar falcon model. that way it would have been a flying battle fortress and would have fitted in with the flying theme you talked about before.
anyway cant wait to see more

You'll have to trust me that it stands out plenty.... its blazing orange at its lightest. I think it comes down to my shoddy phot skills [or complete lack of XD].
Thanks for kind words, I'll finish this guy tonight [weather he likes it or not!]

Man these are some sweet looking Orks. The only thing stopping me from getting my boyz off the ground is the skin. I just cant get it to work. I may go with a red skin color, give them that Red-Hulk look. Again, your boyz look amazing!

Post by: Davidian
The Good Green wrote: Might I suggest swapping the bad moon banner for a bloodied axe, though?
You might....
but I prefer to look at them as trophies rather than any kind of personal Iconography. Especially when one of my regular opponents plays bad moons [I have a bad habit of handing it to him ]. Besides, it looks okay and I'm not too good at sculpting so it's just easier for me to leave it.... lazy git!
I'm here, bellyaching that I dont pick up my paintbrushes and then....
It dawned on me that I've been playing around with plastic for a while....
....look see what I done ;D
[ WIP 2 looted boomwagons & Deffrollawagon]

*EDIT* images have been updated [left boomwagon was the "top" one before editing]
Here's my whole 'support' section.
Got 2 boxes of lootas... GW have failed to impress me with a box of 4 lootas and a mek [just what long-range fire support needs... a short-mid range char?]
my koptas [da green baronz] have just had the cybork Nob buzzsaw arm transplanted.
I have summed up my irritation of only getting 4 lootas per box in the medium of conversion... nothing ground breaking, I just stuck all the special weapons I had knocking around together. They blend in with the rest quite well so that's enough for me.
look see

2] Codex grey dry brush
3] Badab black wash
4] thinned Codex grey highlight
5] further Codex grey highlight when dry

Body and head are a AoBR Nob,
Peg leg is a sprue frame cut and filed to shape [peg leg colar is green stuff],
Ded cutty nife is the tip of the battlewaggon grabba klaw
'Irty srynge is a Battlewagon weapon mount, a piston from the battlewagon grabba klaw and an actual needle,
The dentists mirror was a spare armour plate cut and filed to shape then drilled in the centre,
Face mask and apron are greenstuff... I fink dat's it!

tah!
Started on the fighta properly now.
What you can see is the fuselage and both wings.
Once they are constructed and skinned, I'm going to start panelling it with 10/1000" plasticard.
38346
Post by: Davidian
The above picture is made from 10/1000" plasticard, it's quite pliable and bends without snapping... to get the shape right.
I've now skinned it with 30/1000" plasticard for rigidity and added the canopy, fin and intake grill.
I'm dead pleased how this is panning out... just centre fuselage, tailplane and engine block to do

37519

Also cant really tell scale.
looks sweeeeet though
38346
Post by: Davidian
so would I but it's taking enough time and effort with just the canopy XD
Just thought I'd leave today's offering,
I've built the right hand centre fuselage out and fitted the right hand main plane.
aslo fitted the nose mounted twinlinked big shoota, slapped on some panels and started to rivet the nose.
the orc is there for scale... hope you likey

Always make yourself a card/paper mock up first. try to make the mock up of equal gauge material.
it may take time but it wil save you heart ache in the long run.
Measure twice, cut once!
Double check your measurements and angles and get the right cut first time.
No guts no glory! go for it!

Rawson wrote:

If you go back to the first picture I posted, it was first made of scored, folded 10/1000" or 0.25mm plasticard.
It had little structural integrity but at that stage I could push and shove it into shape.
Then the 0.75mm plasticard skin gve it it's rigidity, no internal frame what so ever and it's very sturdy.
Here's how I'm progressing;
The wing has been fitted with a leading edge and been panelled. The other wing and wing support are built but I wont fit them until I've built the trailing and leading edge root extension (LERX)

and the nose cone has been completely riveted

I really want to... but I'll probably retire first XD
Had a few people wondering how I do my rivets but it's nothing spesh. just use 0.75mm plasticard rod chop tiny bits off and glue. I do rub them down with a fine grade wet'n'dry paper after they're dry to get an even height and round the edges a little.
Anywho, I've built the LH centre fueslage and fixed the LH mainplane

I got my self 3 x A4 10/1000" and 3 x A4 x 30/1000" [thats 0.25 and 0.75mm respectively] btu I've only used half of that in the construction but I'll probably use most of what's left putting big ol' spikes and armour plates on it.
Rawson wrote: Great stuff! Keep up the great work! You have a paint scheme in mind already?
Yes and no.... I want to transfer the camo from my orks pants but still keep it in a true-to-life military style.
this is one reference image i've found that I'm thinking of;

The good ol' F-18E Super hornet... we should have bought these of the yanks rather than waste so much money and feth up are carrier fleet by investing in the F-35 JSF.... but less politics, more WAAAAGH!

Answers
1) it's only Ordinance Barrage that is "move-or-shoot" so they can roll up behind
2)bingo.... though the grotzooka only has half the range of a boomgun, so not too close to be ineffective themselves

Absolutely stellar work. You easily put my plasticarding skills to shame. I have a pair of Fighta-Bommas that might just start taking a few pages from your book (or armor plates from your plane, as the orky saying goes )
Im certainly looking forward to seeing the paint scheme turn out!! Should look gorgeous with either of those camos!
I do have to ask tho... How precise are you with your cutting? I seem to fall to the addage, "Measure once, cut twice, patch till it fits'. Your stuff, though, seems to be absolutely exact!

Ah yes, you're right! They have a strikingly similar profile but the F18 hasn't got the extended ventral fin and wing-tip weapons pylons. I think I'm gonna go with the one on the right as it's close to my ork's camo print but only on the top surface of the a/c. The belly is gonna be either plane and dark or plane and light [or every other colour under the sun XD].
with regards to getting accurate cuts. slightly over measure. offer up the new panel, then you can trim to fit. Then once it's fit, you can trim it and smooth the edges until it looks like it was born to be there.
More pics to follow later, I've got the day off today so I'm working on the back end and underbelly. I want to have it ready to paint by tomorrow ;D

It doesn't feel that quick... I've been doing this for about 3 weeks now :O
I've done all the panelling and detailing now, nearly 100%. Using it for the first time tomorrow. Going to Warhammer World, Nottingham for a game of apocalypse with a bunch of other Navy lads from over the country massive joy.
I also calved a flying stand out of pure diamond with nothing but the power of telekinesis and it was so beautiful that it could make even the most hardened hard man break down into tears. However, after crying all the fluid out of my body, I decided to to replace it with this GW flying base.
Just the gargantuan task of riveting the last 75% of it as required!

38346
Post by: Davidian
wait no longer (given it's been ages since i've even looked at this)
I've chucked the undercoats on (and by the looks of it I used a catapult), that's;
Tin Bitz on all metallic finish parts
Adeptus grey (or what ever that new one's called) on the belly/underside
Shadow grey over the majority (this is the section that will be finished in camo pattern)
Red Gore on the nose cone and fin because my old jet - No18 - was painted up with a red tail plane and can be seen here
I miss them :( anyway, less reminiscing, more painting!
I've painted the left under wing codex grey and applied a liberal black wash. The plan is to build it back up to codex grey with black marks streaking from the rivets so the whole thing looks oil smeared then touch the extremities with fortress grey. The camo will be identical to my orls pants just bigger print... got tones of stuff to sort at work so this is gonna be quite slow progress.... but stay tuned and look at this here what I did then there

still dont know what I'm doing to the spikey bits on the trailing edges... I'll make it up as i go
32369
Post by: schank23
Thats the best way to do it. Just fly by the seat of your pants and hope you get there in one piece
38346
Post by: Davidian
...or three, so long as sommat dies on the way
the oil leaks are going as planned. It helps knowing what an oil leak on a jet looks like.... albeit it's usually bright orange!

Post by: The Good Green
Orange, you say?
Brilliant job! Have you thought about some red for the spiky bits on the back ends? I hear it's a fast'un. Or maybe a very bright color, to draw attention to how fast it's goin.
38346
Post by: Davidian
yeah, OM38 nice and gloopy and orange
...yeah I thought of that but I'm gonna wait till it's mostly done with the red nose and fin before deciding. More red might be a touch too much but I am thinking some nice bright colours. Like my warboss's boss pole.
I've updated that last pic too... didn't do too much 'cause I was watching telly a the time

Here a quick explanation. Lexicanum - Deff Skwadron They come up on ebay occasionally, and a comic that makes me lament on why GW/Black Library don't commission more. Seriously, its awesome. Oh and subscribed Davidian, looking forward to moar.

was there any need to quote the whole comic? XD
Well I've painted a bit more of my jet but I'l save pics of that until I've done the whole underside.
Here's some kommandos I've knocked together this morning from my bitz box including my Snikrot counts as, Skowt Kap'n Gutrippa.
Gutrippa's beret looks a bit toss on this photo... might redo it. I had it perfect then accidentally squished it whilst GSing his sleaves :(

with the appropriated weathering ofc

well I've managed to resist converting more kommandos today and actually get on with painting my fighta [rather than do some actual work... powerpoint does my tits in ].

Hehe, go, do it!
Roit... no update just want your opinions on something. I'm gonna be using my Kommandos as part of my regular force but for the odd game of Apocalypse I'll be dropping the G-Bomb... oh yes, an Ambushing Blood Axe Warboss to add a boss pole and power klaw to Snik's squad.
I'm using the Ghaz model whether I use his rules is yet to be seen. I'm gonna paint the whole of his mega armour in cammo but I want advice on the head to use. I've got 2 options.
First [looks evil] is;
The other option is [the more tempting of the two] this one I painted earlier only the idea is to model a beret on it;
So which do you guys prefer?
30344
Post by: monkeytroll
As a stand-alone I prefer the first one, but if he's going to get dropped in with the kommandos then I'd say go for the beret, needs something to tie him in with the others.
31470
Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
I agree with Monkeytroll, the 1st one is cooler as a stand alone but if you plan to run him with the kommandos the go for the beret.
18980
Post by: Arakasi
I can't even make out the first one Is it some kind of mask? Second one looks nice and I agree a beret would tie him in nicely.
37519
Post by: bigfish
1st head with the camo all over him would look cool in my oppinion. The beret on the mega armour dont know if/ how well that would work on him even if it is a good link to the komados unit.
but w/e, your modeling has not hasn't been lower then awesome so far so i am sure you will do something cool with it anyway.

I got a bit carried away and started doing some damage... it's not really battle damage as such... more like FOD [foreign object damage], flying into things

38346
Post by: Davidian
tah shank. promise I'll get this done soon so you can see something new XD
Instead of doing some work, I hurled some paint on the topside too.
It's rough just to get the pattern. I'll update this pic as I neaten it up.
I took it from the cammo print of a Russian Su-27 after thinking that it's the most pointless cammo ever. On the ground it's a massive blue mess that sticks out like a sore thumb and in the air it doesn't matter because airborne warfare rarely relies on normal visuals anymore. Its all FLIR and MAW these days.
32369
Post by: schank23
Ya but orks dont care about FLIR and MAW. And most of all the Blood Axes. If the orks think the como will work then damnit the camo will work. Kinda like the red paint job makes it go faster. Maybe the ork think the blue camo on aircraft make it harder to hit. Say a 5+ invulnerable save.

I've noticed a few flaws in some minis since photographing them and they've been bugging me. So I've touched up my warboss, most noticeable is the plwer klaw blades and I've done a job over on the base, which I think used to look lazy and unfinished tbh.

Davidian wrote:The rivets are a bit rough, gonna wait till they're all 100% dry then touch them all up with a scalpel and some wet'n'dry paper
A few pages back you mentioned wet and dry paper. I used it as a kid in tech class (or DT or whatever the kids call it these days if they're even allowed to do it) but haven't handled it since. It never crossed my mind to use it for anything as I never really learnt how best to use it, in terms of what sort of thing it's good for.
Do you use it wet or dry, for a start?
Is it a neat way to avoid damaging the model much and take the sharp edges off things like rivets, making things look a tad more, uh, "real", if you will?
You've got some great skills and I'd like my conversions to improve but I've felt increasingly that a good knowledge of where different tools fit into the process is the key factor in getting better. You've touched on something I'd not even considered so I hope you don't mind me picking your brain a bit.
38346
Post by: Davidian
I only use it dry. I use it on plasticard after cutting it and after joins have dried because the fine grade abrasive leave little or no marks compared to files or sandpaper [which can chew through plasticard fast as fooook!] and leaves seamless joins *Note - always leave joins at lest 2-3 days to ensure all plasticard/poly glue is dry on the inside otherwise it can get messy when you scratch the surface. Also when I used it on all those rivets, it was less likely to rip them off because it is less abrasive. I supose I just started using it because it was around the house but now I actaully buy it for smoothing and shaping plasticard. Hope that helps a bit
It's been a long and arduouse build [my first major scratch] but.... drumrole...
I feel like I'm almost there now!
All that's left it to apply damage as per what's on the fin [and one of the bombs] to the entire fighta, base it and.... them dags... I still ain't sure how to paint them! Any sugestions?
Here's a few diferent shots... I've just moved house so I'm still trying to find a sweet-spot for photos

Yeah the rivets were individually cut and glued from polystyrene rod that had been roughed up (filter beads are the bomb but look really clean... perfect for imperial builds).
Well, new year, new build.
Next is going to be a unit of drabber pattern MANz.
Here is the very rough prototype frame after an evening choppin' an' gluin'
next, rods and tubes for hydrolic rams, .25mm plasticard plate details then the inevitable task of riveting

To answer, I will be repainting it totally. It will just be too much a pain in the arse to mask off the face when I undercoat it. I'm not going to be too precious with this one as I'm using it to learn from mistakes and all that.

well here's how the prototype looks undercoated.
Some of the glue joins look real messy but that's because I ran out of the good glue and ended up having to use the revell brush applicator stuff that is very thick and gak for detailed gluing... lesson 1 learned and a new needle point, thin plastic glue has arrived

Forecast? 100% chance of rain of claw attacks. The storm is coming.

in short... yes >:]
I've not been that focused on my orks this weekend.
All I've done is based a load of boys in the same fashion as my warboss and nobz.
Built 2 new trukks that arrived on friday - just with big shoota and rein-forced ram.
And finished off modelling my looted wagonz with bitz ready to paint.
Paints have gained another layer of dust :(
here some pooh photos (I'll update these in a day or two)

Whoa, this REALLY makes me want to convert some of my AOBR nobs now.... Simply amazing...

Post by: Davidian
Oh FFS I want to see them finished too but I went and did something silly...
Even though I've got a bunch of kommandos to finish modelling too, I went and did this...
Since I'm gonna have 8 Manz, they need transport. Feth foot slogging them. What this? they can't go in a warkopta? never mind, they can have the battlewagon and my warboss and nobz can have a shiney new warkopta!
Paper mock... I'm going to reduce the tail pylon length to make the whole thing look a little stubbier. I'm gonna build it using a similar process as my fighta... so hoping it will turn out well...
For any A/C engineers amongst us, yes I am aware that this helo will suffer from serious torque reaction issues ;P may try and wangle in a tail rotor some how.

Is "TFU" a reference to Spaced by any chance?
38346
Post by: Davidian
haha, yes XD
I always loved the name "War-bastard".
Not watched spaced for years.... this calls for a dvd-a-thon

Mock up looks good, stubby tail sounds cool - how about contra-rotating dual rotors?
And gorkdammit, now I'm going to have to dig out my Spaced dvds too

Post by: Davidian
Indeed, we don't want them to get a nasty graze if they fall over
My exams are over for now so I've been able to steal away some time to get the leg structures [hydraulics a pair of struts and stuff] done and fit the power plants [from the deffkopta] and I've glued a few pivot points on the legs now they're structurally done....
....next; arms!

RSJake wrote:I just heard of this game thing called Robogear, it's apparently like Warhammer 40k for young kids...anyway, they have these little jet things with huge engines that would look perfect for your Deff Squadrun!
Ive done a few conversion from robogear, there a treat for ork conversions, Ive made a few Deffkoptas out of them and made Tri-pod killa kanz out of them Il put the pictures up in June (when i get a better camera).
Any way great pics and I like the skin tone for your orks so keep going with them .

tah very much guys,
got the arms attached and should armour built. These are not part of the drabber pattern template and the shoulders on my prototype were an after thought. I wasn't happy with them but I did have a few ideas as to how I could do them so I took the opportunity to make them each a little more individual by doing them all different.
putting the fist-armour atm.
Also, whilst I've been waiting for things to dry, I#ve made a start on my Warkopta;
I've decided against scratching a Valk as the chinork's look has been growing on me. The deffkopta makes perfect sense for the kokpit.... it's almost identical to the FW model afterall.
I've raised the blades profile [to stop any unwarey passengers getting decapitated] extended the blades out to @50mm and extended the skids to makle them appear a little more load bearing.

And that is one structurally complete MAN, ready for panels, detail and rivets... 3 more to go

Got a new supply of 80/1000 plasticard, so I've knocked the chassis and engine housing up for my chinork. I used the trukk bitz to get an equal angles on the wings and started wanging on spare gubinz.. that's all for tonight. Off to watch a film

AH there they are *blows dust off*...
I've been utterly snowed under at work over the last month that it almost feels like I'm starting afresh with these fellas! But work is now continuing and, hopefully, at a pace.
Knocked up the Twin linked shootas last night using a trimmed stock slugga from the Nob models, some co-axially fitted lengths of tubing and a few ammo hoppers.
Next I think will be the Klaws then all that will be left is the paneling and rivets.
So worry not Mr Jarvis, your MANZ are back in production ;P

It's just fine plasticard rod cut into tiny discs!

Holy crap! I would not have thought you would be able to get consistent rivets out of rod that small.
What's the size on that?
