On the back of "How do you explain your hobby to people" thread, what does your hobby get called by people you know?
My Missus refers to 40k as "your little plastic sh*t"
My fave from Dakka is "Mandollies"
What do you have to put up with from your friends or Significant Other, with regard to your figures or the hobby?

I don't have non-gaming mates. I have non-gaming acquaintances - and their opinion of my hobby is of no concern to me. I care not for their manly men getting muddy and groping each other 'sport'. They can have their hobby, I have mine. The wife sees it as nothing unusual. One of her brothers collects Hornby trains, another is a ham radio operator. Her dad collects r/c aircraft. I'm the normal one.

Post by: MrGiggles
I've talked most of my non-gaming friends into the hobby actually. Even those who aren't can understand the idea of a fun game and tend to be impressed with how well I can paint. I'm certainly not museum quality, but I can stay inside the lines most of the time. I can show those same folks the work from some of the super-talented folks on here (and there are a few) and they're pretty amazed.
Honestly, folks are pretty cool about most hobbies now. I haven't had problems with people being dorks about things in quite a few years. I think some of it has to do with more and more of us being functional human beings and some of it has to do with folks finding out that geek hobbies tend to be fun.

Ranging from most annoying to least:
"gay-ass f*ggot toys"
"toy trains"
"wee mans"
"warhammers"
Also, "gay dorkshop" when referring to the GW store.
This is all stuff I've heard from people who don't realise that I play. I keep my hobby on a need to know basis for a very good reason, because this is the general popular opinion of it amongst most males (even ones who will happily veg out in front of an xbox for 10 hours).
Remember, if they're willing to say something slightly derisive in front of you, then they're probably saying something 10 tens as worse behind your back!
Strangely I haven't had much trouble with letting partners know about it... one hated it (very short relationship, that), others have been either "supportive but disinterested" or actively interested and appreciative. Girls are mostly okay with it.. although I once had an amusing conversation with one who mentioned that she would dump her boyfriend if he ever started playing warhammer again. I let her rant, then mentioned that I play and that it's an artistic and social hobby that beats the hell out of staying at home with computer games or hitting f5 on facebook. It's so amusing when someone slags something off and then they realise they've been insulting you by accident.

My cousin for some odd reason refers to them as "Mogwais", which I always find very amusing and have started refering to them when talking with him in this manner, but it's definitely not an insult as he's explained that he'd never have the patience to do the work required to paint the models.
Parents just refer to em as models and my friends mostly refer to them as "those little dudes".
Lucky for me, I don't have anyone that I know that would be an ass about the hobby aspect of it all, they all have some sort of nerd style hobby themselves whether it'd be 360/PS3/PC gaming or reading sci-fi/fantasy books. They mostly are just perplexed about the size of the models and the sizes of the brushes to paint them.

Whenever we play, the wives call it the "Nerd herd" going down to the "Nerd Cave" to do "Nerd Sh#t". How we love them so!
One time one of them really went on a tear - "Why do you guys spend so much time doing this gay crap? You just go down into the basement and do gay stuff. Actually, I wish you were being gay down there - then it wouldn't take FOUR HOURS and we could go out and do something tonight!"
Not exactly politically correct, but the exasperation was amusing. They're all pretty good-humored enough about it, but all the women-folk like to rib us because they're the ones cooking dinner and watching the kids when we play. We give it back just as good when they go to their book club or doing their photography stuff (and do our turn with the babysitting and domestics).
Ah, functional marriages are beautiful things!

My wife calls it Shame, as in Shame Workshop, due to the inordinate amount of time I've spent hiding it from normo's and my avoidance of the topic in conversation.
Luckily she appreciates the art side of my modelling, the obvious stress relief it brings me and the way it can be used to distract and amuse me for hours on end. Oh and that my collection is worth a serious amount of money. Although if I misbehave she does threaten to stamp on my halflings. Her own shame is that she now knows what the models are and will comment on my work; before catching herself, looking angry/embarrassed and walking off mumbling. I think she's just glad I'm not into boring mainstream sports (men hugging in mud, men chasing an inflated pig and then hugging) or drinking. She does get jealous of my main gaming buddy (who I've known most of my life) and the amount of time we spend wittering to each other, like teenage girls on the phone, about little men.
My non-gaming friends know very little about it (if anything) except sometimes seeing a model on my desk. So far every normo I've exposed to my Shame has been impressed with the painting (although I always think its hard to appreciate the level of skill that goes into painting unless you've actually tried it).

Sounds like a perfect plot for a short horror film...

My gf calls it Warhammer, but she manages to say it in such a way that every time she says 'Warhammer' I feel like my involvement in the hobby is the direct cause of a whole orphanage of war orphans being suffocated by having dead kittens shoved down their throats while watching the staff of the orphanage defaecate over the few possessions they have...
As for my non-gamer friends, it's a bit like fight club, they think it's sad, they don't care, and so I don't bother bringing it up.

All of my mates are gamers anyway so no worries there. My girl calls my army 'my little men' but then so do I.
My mum keeps on asking me when I'm going to grow up. Her face was a picture when she asked me what I wanted for my 30th birthday and I said some more skaven. Hehe

A couple of my closest friends called it "Toy Soldiers" but they don't really do it in a horrible way, it's just banter.
A few of my other friends are actually gamers so it's just normal.
Girlfriend is a huge WoW nerd and loves the fluff of GW so just calls me a "nerd" to which she gets it back twice as much! ;-) I lucked out with her!

Mine got me into gaming in the first place. She wasn't too chuffed to hear I'd started 40k after 20 years. Oh well.

One time I couldn't go over a friends house, because I already had an ongoing Apocalypse Game I needed to finish. To this day, whenever I'm busy for extended periods of time, said friend asks if I'm finishing up a "Nerdaclysm match"

No-one really knows about it tbh, just my fiance, her sister and bro in law.
I've not been in the position where I'd need to talk about it to my non gaming mates, though as and when I do I've got a speech built up around it being chess on a grander scale. not sure why I get a twisty feeling in my gut when I think about my drinking buddies getting wind of it... Automatically Appended Next Post: Thinking about it, my GF actually asked me to paint a model as though it were her, so she's kinda coming round to it. She likes the painting side of it but nothing else. She'll walk in to my local store with me, and then push me out of the door complaining about the smell of "little boys" being too strong

@MrGiggles, is that Tengwar on your Pic?
On topic, when I was younger I collected the LOTR. I had a massive argument with people at my school (going back some years) as they believed that it was all called Warhammer, so that LOTR was called Warhammer of the Ring.
But I mostly don't tell people about it outside my social group. although my girlfriend calls it "My little toys" which I quite like

My friends and actually everyone around me, call them my 'little men' xD in dutch 'mannekes', my hobby they respect because once i've showed them a book and some of the 'simple' rules they saw the challenge and reespectable intelligence that is required to actually be able to play this game and the painting they find amasing my hobby is much accepted even by my girlfriend who thinks it's cute XD

I spend a LOT of time on one box of models, so the woman appreciates it. It's really not THAT expensive unless you just rush through things. Video games cost way more and keeping up with the flavor of the week game is WAY more costly. I get a lot of "Your little men", and "Your models" from her. Even my nonplaying friends have an appreciation for it though. They usually call them "Your army men", but most of them know what warhammer is. My friends are all geeks. I get a standard reaction of "How on earth do you paint such tiny things? My hands shake too much and I don't have enough patience!". I just need to invite them around for a paint night sometime. My favorite reaction is my coworker who is enamored with my models but cannot figure out why I would put so much work into something that doesn't turn a profit. He has no idea what fun or relaxation is, and does everything in his life for profit.

Munga, I wish my missus was as understanding as your's.
As for the pricing topic, yes its not cheap. But as you say, if you take your time and model and paint a unit a month then its really quite good value!

Yeah, she's also a jeweler and an artist and appreciates how hard detail work is. She's actually taught me a lot about sculpting and we've made some awesome stuff with sculpley, and after a bit of learning, greenstuff. At least she turns a profit with hers, though. She will still lay the law down about my unfinished work, though. Can't have an unfinished project if I want more toys, for better or worse

My wife used to pretend to cough and say "nerds" when we were playing, but then she tried her hand at painting and played a couple games. Now she really enjoys when we host a game here, which we do frequently. The fact we dedicate an entire room to gaming really helps with that. You married guys know there's not much chance of having the largest room in the house dedicated to gaming unless your wife is really supportive and really into it.
Over the last winter I painted during lunch at my workplace. My co-workers thought it was very cool and creative.
However, I do have the "Oh, playing with you little men again?" element in my life, namely my wife's friends. They are being funny of course. Right. Kidding. Ha.

I don't reguard anyone who belittles a hobby I have a friend, as I don't take the mick out of baking/sports etc, but I have a couple of acquaintances who refer to it as 'toy soldiers' or 'that thing you play' but generally i find that others of a female persuasion just look at me in horror when I mention it and it becomes 'that thing which must not be mentioned ever, ever, ever'. Family that know I play just says 'toy soldiers' as well and those who don't know I play... well theres a reason I don't tell them. (Not the most open minded lot.)
Before I got into the gaming myself I still made the effort to call the games by name... guess that acceptance was why I got corrupted.

My parents seem to be going from 'the little men' or from my dad 'how do you enjoy that?' to 'that thing you do obsessively and might make a career out of if you keep at it.' Refering to the painting and hobby aspect of course. I don't think its possible to live off of the gaming aspect.

My online mates call it 'dolls'. Theyre annoyed cos I play less online, while my wife sanctioned my hobby, as now I can read books and make lists while she watches junk on tv on my lap.
To everyone else of my generation or younger, I say its a real life RPG. 'ya know, you buy a shield that gives you xx life in warcraft, but i give it to my leaders, who run around on the board'.

I don't care how many times this thread comes up because I love it and some of the replies are priceless.
My girlfriend is massively accepting as she is a big geek herself (WoW, sci-fi, science etc) but she doesn't join in or play with me.
A few of my friends are gamers so we either rip it on purpose calling it "toy soldiers" etc but it's all in jest. We know IT'S FETHING REAL LIFE...I mean...a toy.
My two closest friends aren't gamers and quite enjoy giving me a hard time over it. I give it back to them though as one spends his life in the gym which is all he ever talks about and it pisses me off a lot and the other spends his life at work or on his pushbike. Again, in my eyes very sad. We all have common hobbies together though namely drinking, football and music but it's nice to have your own strange ways.

i've had my stuff called 'gay', 'childish', boring, a waste of money, had my friends tell me "i got out of that when i was 8, take the hint". all i say is that it's my hobby, it keeps me happy, and most people under the age of 12 are too immature to understand the principle of cost vs. benefit. although now they either don't care or are starting to warm to it, don't think any of them will be buying a battleforce any time soon though

Since hobbies are very subjective, so it's what we sometimes expect to hear.
But, what are their hobbies? Do they have one? Is it seen the same by others as wargaming is by them?
It's sad, but we survive
