That skaven behemoth is sick, and that metalic purple horror is suprisingly well done

Have to agree! That behemoth is sweet! All skaven parts too, by the looks of it. Don't get me wrong, liking the paint jobs and GS work on everything, but yea... gotta give the behemoth it's due!

Great stuff here Jack, particularly like the Skaven conversions and the skin tones on the DP!

A nice interesting selection there.
The talos looks interesting, but I feel it's missing something atm. Unfortunately, I can't figure out what
Skin on the 'Skarbrand' is very nice, and I like the way the horror has come out.
And the behemoth is something I'll definitely be keeping an eye on

Cheers all
Monkey - The talos will be getting alot more work.
so far its pretty basic.
Will be adding plates to the tail, along with alot of wiring to keep in line with the rest of it.
Also need to get the GS out and remove the khorne shaped face plate and blend it in.
Behemoth should have an update in the next few days.
Will be working on the waist next and the body.
Need to bulk it a bit more and add in some more framework.

Oh my.... that Talos is exactly how I would imagine one should look. If only I could afford some FW stuff I would go for it myself. Also that purple metallic Horror is just plain awesome!

Awesome job Jack!
The Skaven Behemoth is stunning! (The use of the screaming bell is genius! I can see many variants of this!)

all of it looks naughty but the skaven behemoth is just sick(in a good way of course).

The "cages" or frames on the legs of the behemoth really tie the whole thing together and make it a believable biomechanical thingamajig. Also, using the bell bitz as greaves is pure genius. Nice work there, looking forward to seeing that in a battle report some day...

Also finally got my name changed, so no more annoying typeface symbols.

Hello again everyone.
Got a nice big update today, which ran through 3 sets of batteries in my cam :(
This ranges from nids, crons, daemons, O&G, skaven and anything i may have missed.
So, without any more gibbering, enjoy:
Nids:
2 Warriors with prime:
Harpy:
Mr. cuddles - the tyrannofex:
Tyranid prime:
Army shots:
Swarmlord: (still needs 2nd tail section and more GS)
Doom of mala'tai:
The "Twins":
"Twins" and swarmy:
BA Furioso librarian dread: (done a little while ago)
Necron lord:
Nightbringer finally gets more work done on him:
Necron immortal conversion idea:
Troll that im starting to paint, with just washes:
Deathmaster sniktch 90% done:
The start of yet another army:
Daemons, lots and lots of daemons:
Still got more daemons in the painting line not pictured here, plus 6 soul grinders on the way!
So progress is getting there, just a bit of everything, rather than alot of 1 thing.

You suck. Your work looks so great. I especially love the Deamon Prince's light blue skin color, it looks like its glowing. But you're making want to go and paint but I can't 'cause it's late and I need to go to bed....Sigh.
I'm jealous of all your lil' goodies. So many minis that I want and are progressing very nicely.

I want to see some painted Tyranids!

Just working on a few test colours at the moment gutrip.
Wanted a more fleshy tone, and since ive just started putting some stealer shock together, they will be the test models (8 stealers + broodlord x4)
Cheers bunny
More of a curse having all this to paint.
seems to get to a point on each model then stop for ages.
Need to learn to finish things as im going.

Will have another update later tonight
Finally got some work on the behemoth done so its nearly ready for paint (will take some time)
Got 5 horrors and 5 letters painted up.
Started a monolith and made 5 immortals (not paying £9 each for them)
and a few various other bits here and there.

Im very impressed with your sense of weight balance and artistic proportion on your scratch built minis, i especially love the behmoth which i'll call it Chaos Skaven Marines Dire Knight.
At first i was like hmm! whats that shin guard, then omgz screaming bell xD
Are you going to beef up the arms with more details?
Geeez when did you started on chaos , was gone for abit then POOF it grew out of nowhere
25983
Post by: Jackal
Chaos skaven marines dire knight has a ring to it
The bell was junk, had no real use so went from a bell, to a furnace, to a catapault (before the new one was released) and now to this.
Started on the arms and torso now.
Need to build up both arms and bulk out the back section of the torso, so shouldnt take too long.
I started a short while ago
A friend wanted a new army, so i swapped my orks for some daemons, then just decided to start adding to it.
also got another grinder and 6 more crushers in the army now.
So getting there for 24 crushers.
10345
Post by: LunaHound
Has Chaos tainted your brain? I didnt know you were such a hard core Chaos fan o_o
24 Crushers? thats ALOT , well both in money and amount of them , can you field them all ?
25983
Post by: Jackal
3 units of 8 work pretty well
Can also have 4 herald on juggers aswell if needed, so will need 4 more of them.
so 2 box's, with 2 spare which i can use to make 2 heralds on chariots.
So not too cheap, but effective.
Should have really slowly released the pics, rather than hammered over 100 in the 1st page lol.

Great job Jackal! Obviously the behemoth is Rad but my other favourite is the 'Birofex' (i knew i recognised the rupture cannon from somewhere ). Also kudos on approaching none of your armies by half measures, you seem to like flashing your cash lol.... Bit too much grey plastic though .....

wow... now that is a big update mate... i need to read and digest those pics in earnest later on... so i can now only say i totally like what i am seeing will later on say much more to your stuff tho... i am about to get the kids back from nursery school now...
by the way... skaven behemoth? that needs explaining^^
cheers, vik! Automatically Appended Next Post: Jackal wrote:After being away for so long (nearly a year) ive finally decided to kick my arse back into it and get going on all my projects yet again.
Want everything in this blog finished by the end of the year, and ill be building up my daemons even more now (want to get from 3k - 10k)
So, enough waiting, piccy time;
Keeper of secrets i started yesterday:
what i like about this model is how much you achieved a good looking mini with the careful aplication of washes here... the articulated muscles everywhere look very good!
i hope you will do a nice glowy effect on the sword tho?^^
Fateweaver, still nowhere near finished:
that Fateweaver looks already very good... specially the nice looking feathers on the wings... reminds me a lot of old gods from inka and azteken folklore...and the combination of reds and blues is a god choice for this model!
Khornate daemon prince (Skarbrand):
that DP looks very good...tho i fear there are still some moldlines un the undersides of his trophy rack...or it might be due to the color or the angle...
Mangler squigs, just started:
the squigg is so ugly he is almost cute again...almost^^... and the orange and red is a nice twist...
Skaven behemoth update (finally):
and what the hell is this? is this some kind of counts as skaven giant then? highly detailed conversion work there... makes me get cramps if i should paint that...lol... i wouldn´t know where to start and what shouold look like what...^^
Oh, and a side project to keep me going:

and then even some DE as well... boy you have your hands full it seems^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
Haha, cheers vic
Im glad your eyes are better than mine.
The lines on the trophy rack are now gone.
The glowing sword will be comming soon
Just finished work so might get some work on it before i fall asleep.
The skaven behemoth is a result of me having left over skaven kits and too much to drink one night.
No idea what to use it as yet, but it needs more structure work and some more detail on it.
Painting will be a nightmare, but should prove a nice challenge.
Cheers again Vik

well... to be honest i am quite blunt with my statements and my eyes are totaly without mercy... must be all that german geneseeds^^... no really i say what i like about your stuff and point out what i think might be helping... and i think i made myself clear that your stuff looks very cool!
and the skaven behemoth...well yes... needs more sumthin... but all in good time... don´t rush it... i see you are onto something cool here!
25983
Post by: Jackal
Thanks again mate
The behemoth is over a year old now though lol, i usually have a 5k point army painted in that time alone
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
wow...that must mean you are quick and good in painting... well good i wouldn´t argue... but quick... that has to be proven^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
lol, speed painting isnt my forte
However, ill see what i can do.
I usually have shortcuts for everything i paint XD
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
shortcuts ? now i am intruiged^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
I rarely ever highlight / blend / layer colour.
Everything is allways done through progressive washes and drybrushing lol.
Takes 1/10 of the time and looks nearly the same.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
i can´t even do highlights and blending...heavens forbid...^^ i am still learning... baby steps^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
I can do highlights when needed (usually showpiece models) but i rarely bother on normal models as i can get a similar effect with less work
Blending is another monkey.
Have no problems with it, but its a very slow process to get a nice transition between the colours.
Will have to do some soon though because ive ordered some tzeentch flamers Automatically Appended Next Post: Finally got something finished!
Granted its tabletop standard, but its done.
Only wanted a simple base as i dislike crowded and large bases. (want the model to be the focal point, not the base)
And theres that done, now i can get back to painting kairos.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
the base i actually like a lot... but where i have some difficulties with is the sword... hilt looks good but the balde... i think it is missing a certain je-ne-se-quoi...
25983
Post by: Jackal
Cheers vik
The base was actually 5 mins work.
Simply painted, washed and then drybrushed the normal plastic base lol.
Didnt even have to add sand XD
The sword is being a pain to take a pic of, ive got about 15 different pics and i cant get the light to catch it as it should without the use of a light box.
This pic is slightly better for the sword, but not a great deal im affraid:
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
i can see that you did a hard job there... but the glow effect doesn´t say :glow: to me... if you add now some thin hairlines you could make it look like a crystal sword tho^^
and a simple and quick job doen´t eaqual bad job^^... i like the base^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
Thanks again vik
I might go for a crystal look, would simply need a bit more hard lining in areas.
I know, but did i not say i was lazy and used alot of short cuts in painting
44431
Post by: killykavekommando
Nice use of washes! They really add depth to the minis.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
short cuts are allowed! they mark you as a clever person^^
and i would love to see a crystal sword... and if you already have a lightbox... get it out!^^ or if not... daylight pics^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
Thanks killy
lol, i make alot of use from shortcuts
Skin is just tallarn flesh washed with leviathan purple, then the weird vein like section have a layer of asur blue washed over them afterwards.
And thats it really lol.
It will be daylight pics tomorrow vik, a friend has my box for ebaying models at the moment :K
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
one of these days i goota make my own light box ... it is about time... but it needs to be not too big... so that i can keep it around and not having to build it each time i want to take a pic... big enough but small enough too^^
and well i mostly use for my faces dheneb stone with a wash of my current preferrece... can be devlan mud or sepia or something else next time... i still haven´t found THAT formula for faces yet...
25983
Post by: Jackal
For faces i simply paint them tallarn flesh.
Wash with purple.
Highlight heavily with tallarn flesh.
Wash with devlin mud.
Highlight with tallarn again.
Final highlight with dwarf flesh.
Thats my easy way of doing it anyway.
My lightbox fits on a shelf in the bedroom, so its got its own storage area lol.
Its about 24" long, 12" high and 12" deep.
So big enough for most of my projects.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
is it a bought one? or did you made it by yourself?
and well this still sounds a bit complicated to me... i do basecoat and then wash... i for now skip the highlights... i am still too messy with drybrushing so that is still not doable...
25983
Post by: Jackal
I just made it.
Took about an hour from start to finish and thats one with 3 daylight bulbs in it.
Also only cost around £20 lol.
Drybrushing is nice, but for human skin it tend to look too grainy rather than natural.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
yes... drybrushing on faces /skin would be wrong... but that means careful highlighting then and that i am still years away from...
care to describe what you used and how you did your lightbox?
i think i want that^^
25983

Same here mate, with the odd bit of painting done here and there
On another note, just ordered 6 more bloodcrushers to bring me up to 24 now.
Also ordered skulltaker to put him on a jugger and 12 flamers simply for the fun of painting them lol.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
whao... where do you all get your money printed at??? that must be a good part of a hundred pounds at least... you probably hate your wallet^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
I just work too many bloody hours
My daemon army including what ive just got:
HQ:
All 4 greater daemons, skarbrand, kairos, masque, scribes, skulltaker on jugger and 2 tzeentch heralds.
Elite:
24 bloodcrushers, 12 flamers, 6 fiends.
Troops:
20 horrors, 20 bloodletters, 10 plaguebearers, 10 daemonettes.
Fast:
12 screamers, 20 seekers.
Heavy:
5 randomly different daemon princes, 2 soul grinders.
And thats it for now i think.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
what does these add up to? seems it is quite a good collection... tho i have to admit i know next to nothing about demons... but i believe you have way more artistic freedom with these than maybe only bested with orks^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
All 4 greater daemons - £144
skarbrand - £20
kairos - £36
masque - £10
scribes - £20
skulltaker on jugger - £25
2 tzeentch heralds - £40
24 bloodcrushers - £264
12 flamers - £60
6 fiends - £82
20 horrors - £38
20 bloodletters £36
10 plaguebearers - £30
10 daemonettes - £18
12 screamers - £80
20 seekers - £60
5 randomly different daemon princes - £100
2 soul grinders - £82
Ive done that much, ill let you get the total, i dont want to know it XD
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
LOL...actually i have meant the total of your army points... LOL Automatically Appended Next Post: and given or take the odd pound you could have gotten a small car for that amount... all in all around 1150 pounds for the lot... OMG^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
I have a car already though
Ive built this army up over time though, so its not a big deal over 2-3 years.
Points wise, i have no idea, ill check later on lol.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
lol... so i gather you didn´t use everything in that list when you play a game...more an assortment of models then...
25983
Post by: Jackal
Pretty much yea
I usually run a fixed list, but i like being able to swap units around from time to time and see how it performs.
Granted you can read its unit entry for that, but i prefer to see a unit in use and see how it fits my style of play.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
well for that i need my own army finished and i then need expeireince in gaming for once^^
anyways... need to take a nap now...see ya around tomorrow then^^
cheers, vik
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
now that sword looks good! like the bright point!
and the "flames" of the back of yon bloodcrusher looks very good and add a touch of spotlight to the mini...
what i am currently thinking tho are the runes... will they get some glowy effect too? i think this would look very cool...
25983
Post by: Jackal
I may do something with them later vik, but they arent really runes as such, they vary from bloddcrusher model.
However, im sure i could do something with them
And thanks, the sword is a nice easy part of it that requires no real work lol, just some random testing and a result XD
Going to re-do the keeper of secrets sword in blur later on. (when i can be bothered to scrape off the gloss and paint lol)
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
is getting rid of gloss varnish hard? i bet it is...

lol... i wuld think rusty and very much weathered i would gather... and with htese glowy souldgems or how do they are called? and how will you do the base? i would add some scaven just for show there... or many ratswarms...
and the name...could be cheesegrinder
by the way... will update my thread with your suggested methode of making powerweapons...

Cheesegrinder, i like that vik
Ill have to make a etching on its base for that
Hiya perkustin, its been too bloody long

24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
didn´t you want to go lava scheme on these? just asking...
the yellow is nice...and the idea to make blue flames still sounds nice too... but i think there is some blending needed...the transition between the white and the blue should be smoother...tho my nitpickyness might be due to the fact that the camera is so darn close^^ so some effects are a bit stronger... maybe with a not too closely taken pic then let us zoom in? that might make everything look better... also i see you had some slight focus problems...i get this also every time^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
I tried vik, i really did, but painting larva bases is 1 thing, painting a model like it, its evil
The ever changing contours of the model make it near on impossible to look half decent in larva.
There is no blending vik
Just wanted strong, cartoon like highlighting.
Decided to go for a much more stand out look for my tzeentch daemons.
Also, if you dislike painting teeth and eyes, stay away from these things
Edit: Keep in mind vik that my tzeentch units are hardly "normal" colours lol.
An example of one of my horrors (test scheme)
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
well that one i really like... reminds me of so many modern cinema character or from games... like the geenie from aladin and so on^^... the puple metal is working like a charm...
and i see comic like highlights... check! that you certainly di pretty well...
as for theeth... well that i probably could do... bnut for now i draw the line when it comes to hum sized eyes... that is something i won´t get done for quite some time^^
25983
Post by: Jackal
Like my sword painting guide vik, thats how the horrow was done
Painted mithril silver.
Skin washed twice with leviathan purple wash.
Metal washed twice with sepia wash.
Tongue washed twice with baal red wash.
eyes washed twice with thrakka green wash.
Teeth washed with badab then highlighted with mithril again.
Start to finish, 45 mins and about 20 of that is drying time between washes lol.
My kairos model is also shaded for extreme highlights lol, but that was done a while ago and needs to be re-done i think.
Looking very aged.
Eyes are fine for me, the flamers eyes are a tad small though, and theres 7 of them -_-
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
tonbgue is not showing
but other than that this is a very cool mini... groupshot maybe?
and yes... that flamer of yours is way more detailed and the scheme all in all way more complicated... no wonder it took yoou longer...
25983
Post by: Jackal
There is a bit of it showing behind the bracelet
Ill get a group shot once the units finished vik, shouldnt take too long
It was only ment to be a basic paint job, but i got a bit carried away lol.

Cheers for the comments guys
Now been set a nid themed challenge.
Got a game next week and i need a 1,200 point nid army.
It has to be fully painted and based to atleast tabletop standard To make it worse, it started yesterday and i had nothing painted.
So, i spent 15 hours and got 3 thropes painted.
Also spent 1.5 hours basecoating a flyrant and thats as far as ive got.
So im now on dakka until it dries and i can get on with it
Not an easy task and im behind before i even get started, lets see if its possible
So, list:
Flyrant - 5% done.
Tervigon - not based, no primer.
3 Zoanthropes - 100% done
10 termagants - not based, no primer.
9 stealers and a broodlord - not based, no primer.
Doom of malantai - not based, no primer.
Trygon - not based, needs stripping and starting from scratch.
So, this will be a mission and a half -_-
Ill upload pics at the end of each day.
