Honestly go back and watch it. Better than all the other alien movies. I love me some Aliens, but man this one is great.
After that it would probably be these:
Aliens
Event Horizon
The Thing
The Empire Strikes Back
Serenity
Metropolis
Solaris (1972)
A Clockwork Orange
The Omega Man
Godzilla (1954)
Donnie Darko
Moon
Dark City
Independence Day (First Date with my wife, it has to be on here)
The Time Machine (1978)
Blade Runner
So many, here are a few.Alien | Aliens | Blade Runner | Starship Troopers | Star Wars | Empire Strikes Back.I could ramble on,but i am on a break at work.
Waaagh_Gonads wrote: I prefer aliens over alien... guns > long slow periods of nothing happening.
I was going to call you on this, but then I realised i've been watching the directors cut of Aliens.
I'll still disagree though... Alien is clearly the masterwork....
For years Aliens was my favorite, but I was basing that off of the lifespan of a kid. As an adult, I clearly see that Alien is far superior. Of course this was a realization discovered only in the last year.
Now this is a tough one.
Do I go with (in no perticuler order)
Alien/s, Blade Runner, 2001/10, Event Horizon, Starship Troopers, Screamers, Star Terk VI, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Serenity, B5 (TV movies), the Thing, Forbiden Planet, The Thirteenth Floor, Ice Pirates (just for the LOLz), IMMORTAL, The Fifth Element, Outlander, Darkside of the Moon, Moon,...too many to mention!!!
Once again, hard choices to make and not sure if some would disagree with the choices falling into the correct category. Not necessarily in order.
Ghostbusters (sci-fi?)
Serenity + Firefly (TV series not a movie)
Predator
Starship Troopers
Star Wars
Tremors
Matrix
There are many more but I have already listed too many. I think the top 5 would always make my list though. I probably enjoy fantasy more than sci-fi though.
Based on number of times I've watched it, i'd have to go with:
The Matrix. Hands down.
A close 2nd would be District 9, although I have to admit sometimes I just pop it in and then skip chapters till i get to the end where he pilots the alien Power Armour.
That 30-odd minutes of sessy, head-popping mecha action is better than both Transformers movies slammed together.
District 9 is a great film but i just can't bring myself to say it is among my favourite Scifi movies as it would be ignoring some classics. Funnily enough distrct 9 to me is very similar to robocop; the grim corporate humour and the cartoonsh Hyper-violence are very Reminiscent of Verhoeven's masterwork.
Gah,My list could go on for a while if I allowed it to...
Blade Runner would definetly hold a top slot, along with Alien and Aliens.
Other favorites would be.
The Andventures of Buckaroo Banzi.
The Fifth Element.
A Clockwork Orange.
A New Hope & The Empire Strikes Back
Logan's Run
West World.
The Original POTA..
...I really love this movie, and to this day the line " Your Mickey Mouse is a big stupid dope..."..cracks me up.
Yeah, some great dialogue and character interaction to be sure...
Definetly, there are some really fantastic moments between "Jerry" and Darwich...it's one of those films that I always enjoy watching...no matter how many times I've seen it.
Yes! That is a great one. I actually started John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy last night. I watched The Thing first and plan on watching Prince of Darkness today followed by In The Mouth of Madness.

While Ice Pirates is funny...I honestly don't think it's worth paying $60 dollars to see...in fact I'm surprised it's going for that much as I just watched it for free on "On Demand".

It had it's moments...but nothing great IMO.
For "so bad it's good" fun...I'd have to recomend " Battle beyond the Stars."....a little 1980's Roger Corman Jewl...Staring Richard " John Boy" Thomas flying through the Galaxy in search of warriors to Battle the evil Sador (played by John Saxon),in a ship that has breast (or at least what resembles them)...
I first saw this movie when I was maybe 13 and I still laugh every time I see it.

The only thing worse than the plot was the special effects!
I'd have to say Starship Troopers, but only the first one. Hero of the Federation was a load of gak with a few moments of "BEWBS LULZ!" and Marauder was a load of recycled scenes and an overall cardboard feel.

Very true...yet the whole film was filled with some great (if unintentional) laughs.
The scene in which John Saxon, after grafting one of the captured "Nesters" arms on himself (aparently he has to regularly change limbs) begans to choke himself...due to the other Nesters still controlling the arm,is well wort the price of admission.
Sheesh, just one! I like a tonne of sci fi movies but the one I can sit down and watch nearly anytime has to be The Fifth element! it just has so much to offer, it's fun, humorous and has good action...and Milla Jovovich in it :-)
Although I like all of the staple sci-fi films listed here, (Aliens, Event Horizon, 5th Element etc.) I have to say that the 2002 version of Solaris is one of my favorite sci-fi films, which is weird because I can't stand George Clooney. Maybe his presence is offset by the fact that I love Natasha Mcelhone!
It didn't have monsters or alien space ships blowing stuff up, it was simply about a team of scientists studying a vast alien entity that began to study and test them. It was kind of boring at times but I appreciated the themes of second chances and embracing the unknown. It made me want to buy the book that its based on, and that was a good read.

Your tongue is defective.
I am betting he meant Aliens Vs. Predator films. The "or" was probably a type-o. At least that is how I will interpret it for the duration of this thread.
The original Predator was pretty dang good I think. The second one was interesting. AvP wasn't the best in the world but it was enjoyable. Still haven't seen Requiem or Predators.

I left the cinema sapped of all desire to live, so it certainly counts.
The most iconic dystopian vision is 1984, though. Maybe Bladerunner.
Others would include Gattaca, A Clockwork Orange, The City of Lost Children, Chilrdren of Men, Dark City, Idiocracy, Soylent Green, Artificial Intelligence, and Planet of the Apes.

loved Soylent Green...
Also, Aussies have been treated to one Alien movie every Sunday night on the new HD Digital channel GO!... last night was Alien: Resurection
I havent seen i in so long and certainly loved it.

I loved it almost as much as I love Aliens... up until the last ten minutes, which sucked incredibly. That whole hybrid alien thing was lame, and the design looked terrible.
It's a different take, as each alien movie has had a different tone depending on who is facing the alien menace. This time it was wise cracking space pirates, and was pretty cool... until Ripley falls through the grate and then it was just bad.
In other news, I miss getting to watch scifi movies on the telly. Last night me and my girlfriend watched Escape to the Country, then went to bed at 9.30. I've gotten really lame, really quickly.
All the dakkanauts who said they dug it on release day have all 'decided' Battle LA is no good since the decidedly lukewarm reviews have been published.... I am in neither camp, as i haven't seen it.
EDIT: According to wikipedia Roland Emerich has often talked about a sequel to stargate, though if he did go ahead he would completely disregard the series.
Someone posted Soilent Green (sp?) that was indeed a really good movie. I watched it a year or so ago simply because someone here on DAKKA made reference to it, and was glad I did.
Also I want to add The Island. Its a pretty cool movie.

Just watched Soylent Green again a few days ago...I honestly never get tired of Chuck Heston in Sci-fi roles...he's just so OTT it's great.
The Island...I'm searching through my memory banks and just can't remember any Sci-fi film with that tittle...though I do recall a film about Pirates staring Michael Cain with that name..
EDIT:...Speaking of Charlton Heston in Sci-fi roles..." The Omega Man"...a very loose adaptation of " I am Legend"..( The book..not the Will Smith film)...I personaly think it's a really fun watch...

The Omega Man freaked me out as a kid!
and since we're going to the 70's, what about Damnation Alley? speaking of OTT, can you say George Peppard

I remember watching Damnation Alley as a kid and getting a bit freaked at all the Roaches... ...good movie though (in a 70's post apocalyptic sort of way.)
The Matrix trilogy, especially the 2nd, all the terminator films, (especially 2...) Hellboy (1 and 2)
"Demolition man" I enjoyed, Wesley Snipes made me lmao.
5th element is good too, haven't watched it in a while.
Does blade:trinity count? 'cos I like that film.
FITZZ - The Island has Scarlett Johansson and Ewin Mcgregor. Basically all these people live underground after a "virus" kills off everyone and they "randomly" find survivors. You find out that they are actually organ donors of super rich people that clone themselves for those oh so pesky "oops wrong brake peddle" moments. And so Johansson and McGregor escape from said place. Pretty cool movie.
And ALL 3 Matrix movies?! REALLY? Thats odd. I only watch the 2nd one because the Twins are in it. The 3rd just makes my head hurt. Demolitionman is a fun movie though Ill give ya that. Simon Phoenix is just flying rodent gak crazy
One that "counts" as Sci-fi...but contains very few "effects" and I personaly love...
" Time After Time"...a little gem in which H.G. Wells (played by Malcolm McDowell) Pursues Jack The Ripper (who has stolen his time machine) to modern day (1979) San Francisco...

Sure you didn't forget District 9?
Cudos on Pitch Black and Riddick. forgot all about them!
Hehe, I liked District 9, but it wouldn't make my list, I struggle to find much sympathy for the main character. It is a interesting watch mind, I do hope the second one turns up at some point.
@FITZZ, yeah, its one of those films that stays with you. I keep threatening to find it on DVD to show Aurelia, she's not a big fan of Slugs.

Sorry, wasn't trying to force a choice on you. was actually poking fun at the length of the list, not lack of content. my bad.
FITZZ wrote: I just thought of another film that I have to add to this list...
THX-1138...
A film written and directed by George (gosh I love CGI ) Lucas way back in 1971...
The film stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence and tells the story of a future society in which sex is forbidden and all emotion is outlawed..
Not a typical "BOOMZAPBLAMMO" Sci-Fi film...but one I found to be very thought provoking..
Thankfully...Mr. Lucas seems to have forgotten he made this film and has...as of yet...not sought to "Improve" it.
Oh surely a couple of CG Banthas and Jawas makes everything better! hell, maybe we'll get real lucky and he'll make a Prequel
to it as well!
seriously, thx scared me the first time i saw it(7-8?). i think it was the Robot cops. Westworld too! but rewatching it later in life i did enjoy it as well.

Sorry, but Natalie Portman and Farah Fawcett having a 20 minute girl/girl scene couldn't have even saved that movie, IMHO!

Some of the themes explored in Saturn-3 were interesting...but overall the film was a bit dull, and Farrah Fawcett's acting is so bad at times it's near cringe worthy.
Of course...she wasn't in the film due to her skills as an actress to begin with...which is the problem, much of the film seems to exist so the audiance can "look" at Farrah...
EDIT:...The film did have some good moments though..

Yea Ill agree on this one. I was surprised at how much I liked it. I too hope Lucas just leaves it alone. Ill get to annoyed watching it and wondering "Now why the FETH was THAT in cgi? That doesnt make ANY sense at all"
If I might suggest something a little out of left field, Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker is probably the best scienece fiction film I've seen. It's certainly one of the most hauntingly beautiful films and best sounding films I've ever watched
It's definitely not a film for everyone, for example if you think that 2001 is too slow and lacks action Stalker will probably bore you to death as it's even slower paced.

GWAR Phallus in Wonderland

Everything on that list is probably on my top 10, except Aliens Vs. Predator. Man I hate that movie. Go watch Alien and Aliens back to back, then watch AvP. You will see what I am talking about.
I have alot of favorites. I'm a huge Star Wars nut. But outside of that I'm a fan of David Lynch's adaptation of Dune. Suprised no one has mentioned it.

Lynch's Dune is a tough one. First up, lets just be honest, it's a campy mess, and the plot is almost entirely incoherent. I mean, just think about the ending where Alia announces he is the Kwszatz Haderach - had the term even been mentioned before then, let alone explained, let alone explained as the actual point of the movie? So for people who haven't read the book it becomes an indecipherable, for those of us who have film becomes this weird kind of partway property, where you need knowledge from the book to make sense of what's happening, but there's enough changes that you can't just assume that all the stuff from the books is also true in the movie version.
On the other hand much of the design is fantastic, the music is completely awesome, and Sean Young is hot as hell.
So, I mean, it's worth seeing and it isn't unenjoyable, but it's not actually very good, is it?
Space Jam starring Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan. I kid. I kid.
I liked 2001: A Space Odessey. I've made many people sit through it without smokey smoke or beer much to their displeasure.
Empire Strikes Back is the Sci-Fi movie from my childhood that I will always remember. Sitting in the theatre with my older sisters and almost crapping my pants when Darth Vader told Luke he was his father.
I liked the first Stargate movie too with Kurt Russell. The TV show with MacGyver was OK too. I couldn't get into Atlantis and Universe, well, I watch it, but it is too much of a soap opera for me.
I always liked Arnie's Sci-Fi movies. Running Man was great and Total Recall gets quoted a lot around here. "2 weeks. 2 weeks."
The Star Trek Films are a big pile of meh. Wrath of Khan was good and Undiscovered Country was good. I thought III-V were just L-A-M-E. The Next Generation films never left a big impression on me, except the one where they killed Kirk. I cried. lol.
sebster wrote:had the term even been mentioned before then, let alone explained, let alone explained as the actual point of the movie
I think it is mentioned once during one of the voice overs at the beginning, though that may have been an extended version of the film. It should have been titled "Whispered Monologue: The Movie".
