Restoration of the Landraiders.  @ 2011/03/31 00:05:03

Hey, after looking over Ebay for weeks I won a great bargain of 3 LR's for £24 excluding P+P. I knew they needed some TLC and work on them so I'm asking you guys (and girls) what's the best thing to do

LR 1 - Is all there just missing side weapons (sponsors and TL bolter on front). Can you buy them separately from somewhere?

LR 2 - Is like LR 1, but also lacks top of assault ramp and that whole middle piece the TL weapon sits on.

LR 3 - Is really just a shell, easier to say that it is both tracks the main top piece and the back engine block thing.

I have already started looking over bits websites but didn't know if you dakkites could throw some of your knowledge on to this matter. Am i better just building LR 3 back with pasticard? if so any good websites? also thought about buying a new LR kit and using spares on this lot, do you get many spares to do this (this is an expensive idea though)?

For Weapons you can buy the Crusader upgrade sprue, which will allow you to build either a Crusader or Redeemer and to add a Hunter Killer, Storm bolter and/or a multi melta.

For the replacement access ramp if it is the upper part you could buy a set of the forge world ones or ask someone who has had FW land raider doors if they have a spare top part they may be willing to trade.

I was in a similar position and was given a very beaten up Chaos Land Raider and have restored it to being a Crusader just recently. I had to find a way to rebuild the bottom of the assault ramp and ended up using the spare Chimera back plates (from the Hellhound and Manticore kits) to rebuild it.

As for the third one, well you could use the methods above and then rebuild the missing parts in a similar way that I did or find another way all together. Or trade it to an Ork play

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh you could try to locate other people who have had FW Land Raiders (MkII or one of the other variants) as they may have sponson weapons. It is worth a look, you might want to post in the swap shop for what you are looking for.

Iv looked at the Upgade spures buy apparently (correct me if I'm wrong. please.) that they don't include the actual sponsors themselves as im lacking the whole thing not just the guns.

Ramp wise its looking like I might have to start asking around

As for the third I'm a Ork player first so it may become looted very fast but I kinda wanted to sell one once there restored to pay for themselves its no loss if not

The third one might make a sweet terrain piece.

Also, it will impress any potential partners you bring around .. I'm lead to believe that nothing is as effective at winning the heart of another than saying "Look baby, I'm so fly I can afford to use Land Raiders as terrain."

Just don't let them see your 1982 Corolla out the front.

I also recently picked up a landraider minus a few bits. I have had a little luck with redeeming it. I really wish somebody sold the land raider weapons sprue it would make life easier. The solution I have come up so far for replacing the hatches and weapons has been picking up a terminus ultra kit for replacement of the HB plus a few extra bits I've been needing for side projects and picking up a lot of LR bits of of eBay for the hatches.

I still have yet to decide how to approach the tl lascannons...It came with some chaosed up ones with a few missing parts but I'm not looking forward to messing with them.

Definitely check out ebay. normally there are guys on there that "part out" sprues, so you can get exactly what you need, normally for less than 10 bucks. and no waiting on FW for stuff.

Im always on to look out on there for anything related to warhammer so I'm sure something will come up.

As im restoring them im goin to need to deciede which variant of the LR im going to be using is it the crusade which is most popular (TL hurricane bolters?) or should i just make them with what ever i can

there are a few places that sell everything you need for your landraider variants.

$20 on the GW site
$16 at Bitz Barn

Bitz Barn also has the TL-LC sprue for the same price.

also, check out Bitz Box as they have the top of the front assault ramp in stock and they have the LR kit broken down pretty well.

Try apocabitz now.com, in US. I got an entire Landraider, bit by bit, from them; even with postage to UK it worked out cheaper than buying the whole kit fro GW.

Post by: mwnciboo

Well done for getting a bargain i am quite jealous as i normally go for stuff like this and restore it. (yeah not all my pics are in the order I did it, you live and learn!)

I got one of these in a bad condition, I bought the spares i needed off Bits sites or from people at my local gaming club. I also took the opportunity to Magnetise them as I don't fancy forking out £30 everytime i want to change weapons load out!

1st - Get rid of anything on there you don't want (badly glued parts, drill out bits or prise parts off) then using files and knives neaten the whole model up (get rid of bad edges or left over components. I have a Dremel type thing with a nifty grinder head which allows me to neaten cement destroyed sections. Like so..

2nd - Get some Fairy Power Spray and in the Kitchen sink spray it and leave it a couple of hours. Then with a cheap or old tooth brush rub off the old crap paint job + Dirt and dust that many models get.

3rd - Wash it clean and then dry it and rub it down. Then add any replacement parts . I put new Weapon sponsons on it + magnets , cut off the parts that didn't fit.

4th - Once happy Prime it and you are good to go....

Here is mine after a revamp (80% done, needs some neatening up, highlighting and Marker pen detailing)....PIMP MY RAIDER....Good Luck.

@IG GENERAL iv looks all over thanks for the link tho

@Mwnciboo Sweet thanks for the tips, is fairy power spray best thing for the job, I think iv been using nail polish remover in the past and I've heard lots of things work.

Bits wise I have most of them now just missing the actual guns to put on the sponsons, and the front TL AC or what ever goes there

Dullblade35 - Yeah Fairy power spray is the Dogs *******'s for this. It is cheaper (per milli-litre) than dettol or nail polish remover and isn't as bad on the lungs (although it's probably not great for your skin!).

The best thing about Fairy Power Spray is washes off easily where as Dettol stinks and makes your model stink. I spray old ebay models that I pick up cheap, Spray this stuff on and leave them 24hours rub them with a brush and viola a very neat model. Works exceptionally well with metal models and makes picking up crappily painted OOP models a doddle...

1. Buy Model

2. Spray Model

3. Rub Model

4. Wash Model Thoroughly

Done..

See this Article...(articles are great!)

I warn you now this is my first attempt at stripping paint of a model, lucky for my I chose to dive in the deep end with these big thickly painted LR's. I wish it wasnt these but oh well Any way as first attempts go, it was a failure..... I set the models in the bath and sprayed them, with the whole top florr smelling of a healthy clean smell i opened some windows and left for about 2 hours, i returned to dry models and decided to scrub them clean. After 2 hours of scrubbing i gave up this was my result.

i came to the conclusion it wasnt on for long enough and must have evaporated so it needed to be in an air tight container, after looking i found this, fits the LR perfectly:

thick coat of spray and top on :

it is still soaking as i write this.

Just so everyone knows the stuff i'm using its :

They won't look like new, but when you prime them they will look good, it is the price you pay with Plastic. With Metal you can get it damn near perfect, with plastic it will be 80% - 90% Solution. The one i did looked awful until I had Primed it and then it looked pretty good.

I have an old RT landraider that has been repainted a few times with acrylic paints (oh the folly of youth). Would this Fairy power spray dent that?

Not exactly a great bargain... I have 2 useless LR hulls sitting around. Bits sites buy the LRC and sell the weapons, leaving the hull useless. Unless you want 3 LRC, in which case you will end up paying out the nose for weapons.

Restoration of the Landraiders.  @ 2011/04/17 07:31:07

Post by: mwnciboo

I bought replacement parts for everything on my LR. Dakka Swaps helped me out, I posted I was missing the LR Floor plate and some one offered one up and some spare weapons (Heavy Flamers etc) and a load of other spares and I bought the lot off him £15. Now for £40 I have one reclaimed magnetised LR with 3 sets of magnetised Weapons, and Magnetised Doors so it can be change to a LANDRAIDER TERMINUS ULTRA for Apoc. I think that's pretty good considering a new one, with one weapons set is £34.

So taking it logically, 34 x 3 = £102. Dullblade has bought 3 partially together LR's for £24 + P&P. Add in a further £25 for spares new weapons, and parts that = £50 for 3 LR's? How is that not a bargain?

Restoration of the Landraiders.  @ 2011/04/17 07:47:45

Post by: dullblade35

@Howard A Treesong: I'm new to this stuff as well so I wish I new the answer

@ph34r: i know what you mean but if you look at the price of a LR hulls about £20 each no weapons then just to get 3 for £30 is very cheap even considering the lack of weapons. Also i know this is a long shot but its a project for fun to try save these worn LR's

i will put a thing in swap shop but i'll make a call on here too if have any LR weapons please contact me by PM

If you can't get a proper LR forward turret, try either Baneblade sponson turrets or a Chimera turret, and make up some fluff about "field repairs" if you have to

Restoration of the Landraiders.  @ 2011/04/20 13:39:13

Post by: mwnciboo

Brotherjulian is right about Simple Green. The problem being that you cannot easily get it in the UK. There is a website you can buy it from but you have to buy it in reasonably large amounts. I cannot justify spending £35 + p&p for 5 litres of stuff. I'd rather buy another Landraider .

As a Brit i get well cheesed off with how well our American Cousins do, their stuff is reasonably cheap and they get tools and cheap Airbrushes from Harbour Freight, cheap stripping agents, cheap ebay, lets face it the US has it pretty good (standfast their awful postal service)

For #1, I'd go with eBay and pick up some spare Lascanons (or kit-bash them with platicard and plastic tubes)
For #2, if it were me... I'd pick up a Vindicator kit and some bits from the Crusader/Redeemer sprue and make a Land Raider Ares
#3... yeesh... Don't know what you can do with that one besides heavy use of card or turn it into terrain.

Still, for the price, I think you got off pretty well!

Using random cheap floor cleaners is a good way to waste money, and will damage your models if you pick one that has the wrong solvent (e.g. acetone).

Fairy Power Spray is, simply put, the most effective paint stripper available. It's not sold in the US though... but you're fine if you're in the UK

Thanks for the encouragement, the TL AC is made from the under slung AC on the landspeeder or it may be from the Ravenwing (DA boss guy) the cradle is meant to hold 1 AC and a light i just put them both on and flipped them over.

@Brother SRM. i realise that they are upside down but does it matter aslong as bullets come out of the right side then im happy, makes it up a bit more unique.

You're in luck. I've got 7 (Yes, 7!) Bolter mountable covers, and one regular.

Two covers for these, so that they're shut ports

Three Black Templar Cross & Sword icons

Top half of a sponson weapon cover

BT Cross with Censer

2 x Long trackpiece, 6 x 2 plate length trackpieces and 4 x Singular length trackpieces.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope that helps out
I'll take a look through my Vindicator remains too
I'm liking:
The BT icons all of them,
at least 4 covers including 2 that shut.
are the track peices LR wide ones? if so i need a bottom front 1 and 2 single ones.
Any preference on the troop bits?
The tracks I've not got a clue on, they look about a centimeter wide.
Rest of it is yours, I've got no use for any of it ;D
As for troop bits, Anything really. Got a fledgling marine army, but I wouldn't mind some more bits for Tactical squads, but anything will do to be honest. I'll happily swap bitz for bitz :p
Nice, but the red insert on the Raider looks like it could use another couple of thinned coats of red; right now the coverage appears very blotchy.
Or, you could just use a wet palette, you can make them from common stuff around the house. It's always a good idea to have one. http://www.tobi-design.com/miniatures/tips/tips_wet_palette.htm
You have forsaken Mork and he is angry with you not giving at least one of these to his boys for some killy fun time.
Now onto a serious non Orky disapointed statement.
LR1 is looking phenominal. Am impressed by the progress attained throughout this posts history.
New update:
Pictures first :
LR1.
LR2.
LR3.
As you can now see all are at least basecoated,
Lists of individual changes:-
LR1
- New top hatches.
- Heavy bolter turret finished.
- general sandpaper on clean up.
LR2
-New top hatch
-Basecoated multimelta turret and gunner
LR3
-Hatches complete
-Missing track covered with armour plate
-Engine cover
-BT icon
I have never seen how the Landraider design has not been blown apart my critics, here you have the armour of the imperium AV14 all round, and some bright spark decided to put the engine outside the hull for all to see and pick it off, well as you can see here:
i have incorporated the engine into the hull and with solid doors for protection.
The missing bottom piece of track was made with the old top peice and cut to bend it to the shape of the tank, an armor plate is then mounted like the Assault launches would be.
Rest of the recent pictures:
