There was just too many pictures to take in this tutorial. I will provide pics in the next few days when the figure is complete. But here is a video on how I paint my thunder hammers. Comments are always appreciated!
Kenneydee, thank you so much for sharing your pictures. That so inspires me to keep doing tutorials. They are a fair bit of effort and a ton of time to do them right but when I know someone is getting something out of them, it makes it ALL worth it. I am doing a video right now updating my finished terminator and I am also going to video your picture as well! Watch for my next vid........
Cat/
dantay, Yes I will do that very soon for ya. Stay tuned...
Awesome paintjob! My only issue is that Thunder Hammers aren't surrounded by an energy field all the time like normal power weapons, but who cares when you've got something like that?!
"Awesome paintjob" is already taken!!! Lols! I have been speaking with Les for over 2 years now on ventrilo and consider him a friend, I cannot infringe on his trademark!!
I wanted the lightening effect after watching the 40k movie. When they show the TH, it had little lightening on it so that is where the inspiration came from. The foundation of how I went about painting this was from Les - awesomepaintjob's tutorial, however he used oils and got a very very very cool effect, something I couldnt mimic with GW paints.
Here is a video of my finished termie using this thunderhammer, and also a thank you to Kenneydee for sharing his results!
Normally I never use any sort of hammers on any of my minis...but thanks to your video I will start. That was too cool. Best tutorial video I've seen in a long, long time.
Fantastic tutorial !!!!!!! simply fantastic !!!!
I tried Wes’s but as you mentioned blending GW paints is not the easiest way to go… love your idea and it’s just what my thunder hammers needed….
Great job !!!!
Thanks everyone for your very kind comments, if you do try this technique, I WOULD LOVE to see your results, please share your accomplishments and mistakes (if ya make any!) God knows I do!
WOW!!! Nicely done dude!!!! Thank you SO much for sharing your results!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes me feel like at least my effort and time were all worth it!

Great TUT but also im loving the lightning effect on this guys hammer, i saw a video on how to do this effect on whips and i think it looks even better on this hammer
THAT'S why I bought gloss varnish. Can't believe I forgot why. Seeing your vid I'll try a flame pattern with my Salamander's hammers. Thanks aplenty good sir.
I applied this technique to a power sword, and even though I made a thread showing it, it seems appropriate to put it here too.
That's the right view. I have since added gloss varnish (a step I forgot, but should really not be skipped, it adds a lot).
If you want to see the other side or see the pics of it in my gallery (to be able to zoom) I have them in my thread here (not to take away from Catattafish's thread. I hope you don't mind?).
This such an awesome technique! Like the poster above I will try and adapt it (hopefully as well as he has) for my powerfists and top of librarians staff.
I'm starting a new SM army, and am looking for new ways to paint the Power Weapon variants I have. Your tutorial on TH's seems very helpful! Can't wait to try it out.
If you ever get around to doing Lightning Claws, please let me know! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this.
I really really suck at painting but this tutorial really helped me.
sorry for the bad image i hope you get an idea what i did =)
I do get the idea of what you did!! next time, back the camera up so the fig is in focus, but I do get it! Thats great you are happy with your results! I can't really comment because of the pic quality but the most important part of any miniature, is how YOU feel about it, not some other person or critic! Good on ya !
Looks awesome, I'll try it. Thanks for sharing
But im at my best maybe 'avarage' painter, but I'll try.
Any idea what colors would fit my deathwing (white) terminators?
Avatar, you are correct in that the hottest spot most likely would be where they strike an object. With a model just holding the item though, its kinda difficult to show that energy exists without having it strike something in a pose. I like the way the sword portrays the potential energy.
Unforgiven, I would think the reds would stick out pretty cool, but honestly greens or blues would stick out too! Its your preference really....
Awesome tut catattafish! Thanks!
total noob question, are those paints straight out of the pot? i never get mine to 'spread' that well (if that makes sense?).
Anyway, im definitely gonna try this technique when i finally get around to re-painting my army, thank you

Thanks catattafish, I can already see my termies red THs. Any paint suggestions?
Tryed something like that for my company champs PW (my first PW)
and as I said Im not very good painter but I think it looks good for my skills.
heres some pics tell me what you think:
No matter your skill level, EVERYONE needs to be commended for painting their minis! You asked for a few suggestions, so may I... It looks as though your paint might be a bit thick, try adding a little bit of water to it to thin it down. It may mean that you have to do a couple coats to get the colour you want but you won't lose the definition in the model. Regarding the sword, other than the white, there isn't much contrast between the colour. I would suggest using a darker first coat, and then the first highlight be a fair bit brighter....
I've used this for a couple of thunder hammers now, and ... yeah, it looks ten times better than what I was doing before. I will have to find a working digital camera (looks like mine got dropped one too many times finally) and take a few pictures, because my Deathwing weapons are going to look AMAZING. I ended up going with green, because well ... Dark Angels. Had to do it.
As a sidenote, I also started using the lightning idea on the storm shields -before- I looked at your general Lightning tutorial. Now I'm all worried that the REST of the models won't look as nice!
That is awesome Candroth! I can't wait to see your results. And why be worried the rest of the models won't look as good, you can always repaint them! LOLS
Look at the first page of this forum topic and you will see someone else that did a red TH! I think the colours are included, if not, either ask him or I can try and figure it out. Good lucK!
It looks better he farther away you get. I'll try changing the picture later
Any ideas what colors were used?
I am looking to paint all my grey knights the same except for the Force Weapons.
I have the blue and the green I want 2 more.
Candroth!!!! That is F'n sweet!!! I really like how the figs are painted, but the T-hammer really turns the weapon alive! Excellent execution and thanks so much for taking the time to show me your results!
Just finished using this on a Power Sword, apologies for the quality of the 2nd photo.
Problem I found is that the paint wouldn't come off of my brush at all if there wasn't enough paint on it, so I'd put more on, and get the splodgy thing you see going on.
Word from the wise, thin your paints... gotta learn to heed my own advice sometimes Though it does look quite good from a distance...
The lightning is a bit thick, but I'm not very patient so it is what it is. I also used your storm shield technique, but wanted to be more visible on the tabletop so decided to do the whole shield. These guys get a bunch of comments when I take them out... now only five more to go!
just did up 5 TH with this method and I love them!... they look fantastic and are the perfect style to complement my termies
EDIT****
Not quite as good as yours, but since I have only been painting for a month or so I am VERY pleased with them and the technique is simple and efficient! (although I brewed up my own blue rather than using GW's)
