You have the 'uber-ominous' meter pegged at a mere 10 though, to achieve 11 you need to add black cloaks with semi-visible faces and more crackling blue energy arcing from eyes, hands etc...

Occasionally I will draw on paper, scan in, and then paint on top of that as well. However, I generally work better starting with large masses and shapes and working detail into them.

I've read the fluff on it; even the actual short story that includes the fight between the GKGM or Brotherhood captain (it's one or the other) and Angron. Sure, it fits with the GK fluff and their current rules (and also Angron's terribad WD rules.. dear lord they sucked).. but it was literally the GK's leader going mano a mano with a Daemon Primarch.

Either way, sounds good! But.. Angron will be very hard to do. Not to mention the necessity of throwing in a few Bloodthirsters.
I can imagine it now; a forward-view on Angron, similar to below image but greatly expanded on, with the back of the GKGM and his companions shown as they charge the Daemons, Nemesis Force Weapons held high.
Also, I'll see if I can dig up the old WD with the story in, and find out what weapons the GKs had and any other important details.

Its not that he is short, its just that I thought terminator armor made a Space Marines stature quite exaggerated and tall. Terminator armor 8.5ft-9ft tall or taller? I am not totally sure.

Inquisitors arn't always impressive physically. its entirely permissable to have a 98-lb weakling inquisitor, that just happens to be a potent psyker.
Naked, space marines vary from anywhere between 6-7.5 feet tall with 6 being the absolute minimum.
add PA for another 6" or so, and Terminator armor for another foot or so.

Space Marines are canonically 7 feet tall in their power armor very little variation between them.
Terminator armor also does not add 5 feet to their heights, mr Terminators are 12 feet tall. Honestly, I'm doubting your ability to correctly judge how big something 12 feet tall is if you say that.

Now, TBH, American grammar disguists even me. As someone who once lived (yes, I did) in England (near wales) and in Croatia (where they use British spellings), I am known to occasionally use the british spellings, but for the most part I use the good young American. My conclusion as to why the spellings are different is much more complex than yours:
Americans use unorthodox spellings of certain words because:
In the busy American world of TV programs (I believe there is an alt. spelling fro this too?) where bin Laden was only killed when the PSN was down, there is no time for extra vowels and such! Besides, our attention span is was too sh- ooh, hey, House is on!
Now the British, what with their miserable (mostly) rainy weather, have time to add these letters, and be productive on a regular basis. How else did we get the internet and the computer? Britain of course! (MY explanation to the internet: An English weapon of mass distraction to counter American Productivity).
And THAT, good sirs, is the reason why im2 and Dark should, in America,
"Don their armor and challenge me to an honor duel, and shall color the soil red with my blood. Center your thoughts, because you are about to run me thru! (fixed it for ya!).
Whew, what a mouthful.

When Obama sees how angry they are, he'll be like "wow, and I thought I was angry (at the terrorists)" then all the world leaders will try to calm them down and when they listen to themselves, there will be peace.
When that fails, the AM will kill all of our leaders, and will rule our planet. They will be too angry for war, and will only be able to express themselves in blood showers (exactly what you think it is), powerfist-duels, screaming, and rage-gasms (where they fap so angrily that they "spray" pure anger [acid]).

They're about seven to eight feet.
Lovely work, I especially like the look of the Vindicare. Really evocative characters.
7-8 feet out of armor. That looks like a suit of tactical dreadnought armor, so the height is probably accurate.

It's an improvement, but still not big enough, and I suggest you change your avatar to the Inquisitor or Vindicare, as the duplicate image of the GK Brother Captain is.. off putting. Can't particularly explain why, it's just one of those things that is. Y'know?

I suppose having the inquisitor as my avatar is fitting since I am a "Member of the Malleus"

Very good! Love that piece, except for one thing (well, this doesn't really detract from the piece, but perhaps the intention of it) - Draigo just looks like a Justicar.
But other than that I love all the little details. Hell, I love all of it.
16879
Post by: daedalus-templarius

Great work! Only nitpick I can offer is the perspective on Draigo's sword seems off, but I assume that's just Finecast warping.
16879
Post by: daedalus-templarius
Yea, I might rework that a bit. Got some feedback from my art forum so there are a few changes I'll be making. I kind of shoehorned in the demons on the edges and I think they are weakening the overall composition. I was drawing it as a pose piece, then I was like... I'LL ADD SOME DAEMONS, YEA! Silly me. That needs to be planned in beforehand!
So, we'll see. I'll make sure to leave this piece up though.
Also, don't most people know what a commission is? I've got people on another forum asking me to make them pictures for free.
@Hazzer
Well, its a bit more complicated than that, but that is a simple way of describing my process. However for this I did my linework in photoshop, not to mention all the painting as well.

Its actually how I run my 10 man squad
I guess you could think of this as the front ranks, where all my psycannons usually are to be in range.

Post by: Omegus
They all have psycannons? The guy on the left has the most distinct weapon, with some kind of projection device rather than a barrel. The two guys on the right have a similar ammo-feed system to the guy on the left, but actual barrels (albeit oval). The guy to the left of Draigo has a unique configuration, wielding a sharp rectangular box with a big round barrel and no ammo feed system. Draigo himself has a weeny storm bolter.
Anyway, yeah, the picture does look better without the daemons. The sword still needs to be shaved down a bit on the top. I know the intent was to have him pointing it at the opponent, but the way the handle is drawn, he is either simply holding it, is giving it to someone, or is showing it to the viewer "hey, check out my kewl sword ^_^".
16879
Post by: daedalus-templarius
I'm not really a fan of the new psycannon design, I like the old one a bit better, but I tried to make the one on the left look a bit like the new one.

Well a background would have been cool, but it didn't have the narrative to support, so I just wanted it to be a couple characters. Although these characters don't even look like our characters anymore, sheesh!
Haha, dance number ftw. Didn't really think about that

Post by: Omegus
Love the piece, have another small nitpick.
I would recommend changing the boltgun perspective a tad to make it point slightly to the viewer. The Genestealer has a real sense of coming at an oblique angle, so the way the boltpistol is pointed it looks like the Inquisitor is shooting at something to its right. Maybe that's what you were going for.
Oh, and you really like that ballet stance, don't ya?
16879
Post by: daedalus-templarius
Yea, the next female I do, I am making my wife do a lot of modeling for me beforehand... with guns and swords.
As a different angle on the boltgun would probably look more dynamic, I think you aren't considering how much reworking it would take I should have done that in the first place.
27391
Post by: purplefood
Actually i think it works pretty well as it is.
Genestealers are quick so them side-stepping to avoid a bolt shell makes sense.
In fact when taken like that things are about to poorly for the good inquisitor.

I don't know, the only erasing needed would be just the lip of the barrel to make it slightly more oval (like a cat's eye). Then you just trace the line of the pistol like 2mm to the left, and viola it's now pointed to our left and a bit behind, right at the stealer. The Inquisitor's arm is fine as is. But I may be approaching this from the mentality of a pencil sketch, I have no idea how much inking/computer work/et al goes into your pieces. Great work as always, in any case, and if my nitpicks are getting annoying, please feel free to tell me to STFU. I probably deserve it.

Post by: daedalus-templarius
If the tip of the barrel changed, the whole gun would also have to change, and her arm; at least that is what I'd feel I would have to do. Also, I'd feel like I'd have to tilt her head in the direction of the barrel as well.
However, you are correct in that I think that would probably be a more dynamic shot. Maybe if I had of posted a WIP you would have said that earlier but I try not to post too many WIPs, people don't want to look at those (most of the time)!

This one does, and we all know that the hive-mind is pretty fickle about making all sorts of different versions of the same thing, maybe it didn't want as many of its genestealers getting headshotted by trigger-happy Inquisitors with their bolt pistols
Nice save...

Spore pod/random larger tyranid creature, small object is probably another, dead, tyranid creature left in the wake of our Inquisitoress' flight from her downed lander.

Fantastic piece, not very imperial though.
Where is the gothic and the grimdark?
Looks more like a Halo universe setting, especially the soldier and city in the background.
16879
Post by: daedalus-templarius
Well the setting I had in mind was more of a pleasure world instead of the heart of the imperium, where more gothic architecture probably would be (this is actually where I am running a scenario in Dark Heresy right now).
The Assassin is wearing some =][= symbols though
The upward camera angle didn't turn out EXACTLY how I wanted, but I liked it well enough; probably should have shot a pic of myself with my nerfgun

Maybe if the guard looked more like he is at ease and less like he is about to turn around and double shot the assassin in mid air.
as it is, he looks like he knows whats coming.
maybe turn his eyeballs to face forwards and less of a silly smirk on his face.

agreed, though Not sure how halo got on that list, it's a good game and all, but it's too different from assassins creed and Arkham Asylum. Especially the first-person part.

Nice job Daedalus.
Also, a piece to celebrate Space Marine (and its accursed broken demo) would be great!
I think something in the spirit of the game would be best.. I'm thinking a large picture showing a still of a multiplayer game.
For example, you have an Assault Marine and Raptor dueling it out over an objective point whilst other battles take place all around, further and further into the background. Of course everyone is a different chapter with a bunch of mixed up armour sets.
As a little joke, you could have gamertags above each marine, representing people you know on Dakka or perhaps on steam.

Zounds an update!
http://galefire.com/2011/09/slayde-templus-crimson-turnabout/
A baller Inquisitor from my Dark Heresy scenario, he is in charge of those silly acolytes... this is specifically a turnabout/character design, so no background. However, now that the design is set, it should be easy to put him into a cool situation.
http://galefire.com/2011/08/heretek-scalpel-constructs/
And some scary things we fought last time, but they ended up dying WAY too easily... they will be much tougher in the next go around! This image was a bit off the cuff and pretty quick, but I felt it came across pretty well to show what was going on
I was working on a bit scene with a bunch of Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines punching each other (with guns) but... it just wasn't coming together well. Maybe after this next commission, which is of a sassy female vindicare assassin perched in a tree with a Eldar Long Rifle AND an Exitus rifle...

Those are looking good dude, although the sniper (female vindicare?) just looks a bit weird, the gun seems too big is all. Gives a very bulky feel, rather than the svelte, athletic being poised to strike from the shadows I envisage a vindicare to be. The pose also looks a bit weird.
Hopefully my two cents is helpful.
The bottom one looks pretty sweet too.

I was looking at a vindicare model when I was drawing the gun, maybe the heroic scale of the models doesn't translate as well to a picture; it is very large. Although it is supposed to be the most amazing sniper rifle evar, so I guess it needs to be. I mean, look how big this m95 is compared to her!
Twisting around in a tree may not have been the best pose, but I had to show the front of her for the client but also wanted her looking into the piece to draw your eyes to the advancing eldar. Those were my design decisions
Also here is a preview of the next commission I am working on:
http://galefire.com/2012/07/40k-commission-ultramarines-vs-tyranids/
Bout to get started on the painting/rendering part of this as the client really liked how it looks so far.

True enough on the vindicare's rifle and indeed the most powerful real life sniper's.
As for the vindicare's pose, I was and still am drawn the the wraithlord and the bright sky in the background before the vindicare. Probably because I read left to right.
Second one's looking really good though, look forward to seeing it complete.

You know what I suddenly realised you should do for the sheer awesome fun of it?
First war for Armageddon. If anything's more awesome than Draigo's insane Daemon killing fluff then it's that.
Picture it.. The Daemon Primarch Angron flanked by 12 Bloodthirsters, thousands of Bloodletters/crushers, Khorne Berzerkers, renegades, Daemon engines.. meanwhile Logan Grimnar alongside Ulrik the Slayer whilst he was still a Wolf Guard and he avenged his fallen charge, Wolf Lord Kruger in combat with the berzerkers.. whilst valiant Steel Legion Imperial Guard fight in the trenches against the horrors of the warp. To top it all off, Taremar Aurellion and 100 Grey Knight Terminators giving their lives so that their Brother-Captain may banish the Primarch, even though it is at the cost of his own life.
Doesn't get much cooler than that, and I reckon you could do it wonders.

That Draigo piece is awsome.
One suggestion I have is if you made a version of that piece with
“Atop the Blood Falls, where the acrid ichor of Khorn’e fallen champions tumbles endlessly into the void, Draigo slew the great Bloodthirster Kar’Voth. With cleansing fire he drove the demonic taint from the beast’s great axe, and used the molten remains to reforge his sword, sundered in battle with M’Kar the Reborn so long ago.”
as sort of a title. Maybe on a scroll accross the very top of the page in small writing so it doesn't distract.
