Ok, I figured I’d start a WIP on a pretty major project I have started for an up and coming fund raiser called ”Battle of the Shrine” which is a fund raiser put together by our local gaming store.
This year I offered to help build the center piece, a building which is called The Shrine of the Astartes at Mortran Prime. Read about it here http://battlefortheshrine.webs.com/thebattleofmortraniv.htm
The building is a little bit shrine, little bit local government and the central command hub for the mining on this planet, Mortran IV.
I got a ton of idea’s based on the Imperial Palace in the 5th addition rule book and additional pictures that can be found in the GW expansion book Apocalypse reload. GW also has an article in White Dwarf about building it though there (my opinion) is not a whole lot about the construction like GW put into the Wolves display (can’t find the link as I type this) also Great information in the modeling section on building cities of death and their construction with a lot of write up.
I’ve been “building” this in my head for a few months now while trying to finish my Templar army and gather building bits. I started actual construction about three weeks ago but it started slowly as life’s responsibilities took front stage. This past weekend I actually started a layout and this weekend I have made progress enough that I have a wall……
What I started out with is as follows:
1 piece of 2’ X 3’ 2” foam + additional scraps (so far not enough)
4 GW Imperial sector box sets (I wish I had two more)
2 Shrines of aquilla
1 Fortress of redemption box set (just in case)
1 Moonscape set
1 Urban barricade set
2 Honored Imperium sets
A sheet of paneling for under the foam.
1 Solar collector & battery charger ( solar powered LED’s baby….)
100 3MM LED’s, wire & resistors.
Misc walls and floor bits on Epay.
Tons of different Plastruct sheets + a couple Plastruct odds & end bags.
1 1” X 1” digital display screen (gonna love this when it’s done)
So…. With that said or typed…. The construction officially starts…. Yesterday 5/14/2011…. Actually I started Friday night…. But something about the day & date I didn’t like…. Go figure.

Ok… I jumped a little…. I spent the better part of eight hours cutting sprues, separating wall bits into categories, taking over the top over the top of our washer and drier…. Setting up an old folding leg table mechanic thingy I had in the garage and running around “gathering” tools.
Also picked up a gallon of acrylic latex neutral base black.
Later that night, removed everything from the top of the washer and drier…. The Emperor herself had spoken.

Later that day….. Note to self:
Self…. Do not think you can speed up the gluing process by using super spray adhesive on the foam.
I don’t know what I was thinking…. Lack of coffee maybe? I mean I have PVA glue, tons of it !!!! why did my dumb ass use super spray adhesive….. chalk one up for me….

This is a couple shots of the train I’m building… I am to get it to the “paintable” stage and it will be turned over the club for paint and final detail.
This is part of the fluff for our battle of the shrine.

Stuff all over the place…..
Here is the “beginning” after looking at other pictures and realizing I had four imperial sector box sets this humble beginning was to small…. Back to the drawing board.
Please forgive my basement..... after all........... it's a basement.

The front steps.
The idea is this….. The whole layout will be placed in the center of the gaming table, troops, tanks whatever can all come up the steps to the front entrance to the building or the main courtyard (which is in the works).
Another set of steps just before you enter, maybe only one flight….. then the door(s).
Did I loose everyone yet?
One side of the building will be elevated, which will have a lower wall exposing the basement…. Opposite wall will be the one with most damage providing gamers a way to fight inside….

M11-15 +1/2 part II
A little better idea of the front of the building….. it’s more of a government building so I won’t be attempting the ornate front entrance like GW’s imperial palace… I will have only one spire too the left side because the trains will be running along the right.
I think the hardest part is keeping everything square & true....
Off to the hobby store to buy a mini square because I noticed one wall was off and it carries to each panel after....

Can I ask what you have used as the base for that locomotive?

I have had a similar idea and so far have only come up with cannibalising a O scale model.

It seems like a very cool idea mind
Can't wait to see more.

The train was picked up by our game store owner, not sure of what gauge and the train itself had seen better days… it was motor less & missing parts. This is only one of a few trains he intends on using for this event, my train I think is intended to be hauling tanks and supplies which the store owner is building all the Chimera’s and cars that this train will pull…. I forget the count but memory says he’s building like 6 tanks + so the whole thing is going to be huge.
The idea for the train is to just make it look like a refitted train for 40K….

The Shrine of the Astartes at Mortran Prime WIP & Blog of sorts @ 2011/05/16 00:38:25

Post by: Neconilis

It is an O scale model, though it might be closer to O-27 gauge. Either way, the difference between O and O-27 is mostly academic, so it doesn't really matter.

Also, glad to see that you finally did this Rhich, can't wait to see you progress on everything.

Well Sunday afternoon I stepped back and did some thinking…… And, came up with this.
This is the start of the “catacombs” underneath the building, adding another level to the building.
I hand laid each brick….. going to add some skulls to the second panel… just needs some skulls….

I found one stinkin skull in all my bits.....
Probably because I used eight of them on my dreads base.... I'll raid the bits box at the store tomorrow.

Didn’t do much on Tuesday, Went to Home Depot for some supplies. Tuesday night had a three way battle at our gaming store and really wasn’t in the mood to model when I got home at 2AM.
Did find some Scibor inserts while we were battling it out and grab them to use, it’s going to help “mix it up” instead of having the same panels over and over again.
Although I’m not trying to copy GW’s Imperial Palace they did do some really cool things and I decided tonight to give one a try…. It wasn’t to bad to do so I’m going to use it, I have one more to build and two partially wrecked ones to finish…
Tomorrow I add the floor to the front and begin securing & detailing that area.

Couldn’t sleep… ton’s of idea’s going through the “old noggin” so I started to work on tower….
Originally I wanted it angled like GW’s because it looks a lot less boxy and more ornate but GW’s also looks a lot like a church kind of building were as this is more a government building and we all know how square those guys are…. Can’t believe I used the word “square” to describe a person…. How sixties.
Anyway that’s how tall the tower should be and on top of that there will be a communications dish so it’s up there for sure…. With the front figured out I need to start running wires for the LED’s
Plus the edge of the foam is it.... I need to stay about that size without taking over a whole gaming table.... that's for the next building....

Thursday...

Made a little progress, not much… everything requires so much thought and then you get a good idea only to realize you don’t have what you need, need more… whatever the case.
Took a drive to Home Depot (25 minutes) and picked up some sheets of hard board 2’ X 4’ & a tub of joint compound. I want to get rid of the panel I started with because it’s just to flimsy.
Also while I was out I swung by a train/model/hobby shop and checked out what they had for project plastic IE Plastruct sheets and what not. I found some sheets that will make great roof sections and also stocked up on #17 X-acto blades, glue tips, ultra-fine turf for the moss that will be growing on some of the walls.
Well the new board is cut to size and because of some good “suggestions” from fellow Dakka posters I am going to be making four sections that will fit together to make one building or can played spread out. Mind you the front section is 30” X 24” so it’ pretty big. There will be two side sections and one middle which will also serve as the rear.
The tower has been change to an angle instead of flush which added roughly 6” to the total width.
The was decided by both my daughters who thought the building lacked “character” and was to “boxy” Now if they only offered to help me build this thing.
The first floor is the latest hurtle I am dealing with, the GW building’s floors appear pretty thick in the pictures I have so I bought an additional sheet of ¼” hard board with the idea of using a dremel with a small router bit and a guide and routering 1”X1” squares to make the tiles for this floor…. Layout alone took hours and I only got two rows done…. So depending on how easy and cheaply I can get GW movement trays this could go either way.
The foam is cut out for the front section where it will be opened up to the basement so I am starting on pillars for that area and also getting the front stairs situated.
I hope to have the first layer of basecoat on the front & some rubble starting.

Friday night.

Ground floor taking shape, started with a piece of hard board and used my dremel to router out 1” squares. With this in the final stages the basement and be detailed and front steps and terrain can be started to be finalized.

Heya Rhich, ( Jim here )
It's looking pretty good so far. The tiles seem to have come out nicely.

I really like the little bit of brick work you've done so far. Are you planning to do more of this? I'm wondering if there is an efficient way to make lots of those little bricks. Don't know what they cost, but I could see that becoming pretty expensive.

Can't wait to see some more.

The bricks are from Army Painter I think, I bought them a while ago (3 packs) because I was originally was going to do bits of blasted brick walls for my bases. I didn’t think the bags where that expensive for the amount of bricks you got per bag. I ended up only doing three walls for one Stealth Team and the rest got put in a container and put with the rest of my “supplies” until this project came along.
There will be a couple more brick walls on the right side and a few on the left side. First wall was a pain because there was a “learning curve” but I suspect the walls I need to do, especially knowing how many now, will go rather quickly…. Sucky part is each brick it placed one at a time…. The bricks themselves are easy to trim and shape.

Thanks to Stretch we have now figured out who makes the bricks…. It was so long ago I’ve since put them in a jar because I bought three or so bags of them…..
There from pegasus hobbies.

I bought the sector and the city box (the limited release really big one) with the intentions of building a city fight table. Dang now the itch is really starting to set in. Crap, now its time to hit the drawing board again. At least I will have something to keep me busy while I recover from knee surgery on the 25th. Good luck with this build! Can't wait to see more

What are you going to do with the rest of the "tower" section?

The Shrine of the Astartes at Mortran Prime WIP & Blog of sorts @ 2011/05/21 21:13:40

Post by: Rhich

The tower will be pretty much un-damaged. I just haven’t built it all up yet because I’m trying to get the actual floor figured out.
What is planned for the very top of the tower is another 6”+ scaffolding for the communications dish (and a great place to get troops) + I am hoping to get at least the front lit up with LED’s so I will be also placing a solar collector 3” X 1.5” which I am going to power everything.
Today I got the general landscape situated and primed….. I’ll start getting the catacombs put together and running wires.
I hope to start laying out the next two panels (the left & right walls) tonight.

Hey guys, just for the record, this is my very first piece of terrain so any suggestions would be welcome !!!!

I'm doing the 40K table & Max painted up the train cars (which came out sweet)

Right now I'm doing the lower level because the dam paint isn't drying fast (damp here because of all the rain) I have heaters on it, so I can get back to it tomorrow.

I'm building terrain again this year for BftS. I won't be doing 40k stuff this year though, I'm building the warmachine table. A couple other guys from Base Camp are putting together stuff as well. I was hoping to get a thread going for my project but my camera seems to have disappeared. If I can find it I'll start a thread with some pics.

I'm working on the piping and chemical tanks in the basement (not my basement) and the bigger pipes. Also gravel and debris. I expect most of it pretty much finished tonight.
For some reason this paint isn’t drying…..
I've also got to get the wires in place to put one or two lights in the basement or all this detail won't even been seen.

Not 100% on lights at the moment, I was getting ready to install the emergency lights in the catacombs and had everything pretty much ready then found the wire I bought isn’t the right wire. I’m going to try and return it tomorrow because the label on the spools is correct but the wire isn’t, only problem is I bought it like 8 months ago and I doubt I have the receipt.
Only 4 lights for this part so I might still be OK as far as getting at least that done.
Its little “hick-ups” like this that really set me off….
Well it’s 1AM and I made a little progress anyway…. Paint is taking its own sweet time drying which didn’t help. I was hoping to have the catacombs finished today with paint & debris so I could lay the floor down and start on the ground floor...

Neconilis:
The Adeptus Mechanicus showed up this afternoon and we ran a “test” of the emergency lighting in the catacombs today, although dim it does provide enough lighting to find your way around.
Due to enemy operations in the area electrical service has been severed so solar back up of emergency lighting kicks in

I should of gone with a yellow or brighter white but these LED’s are what I have an abundance of.
The solar panel will keep 50 LED’s lit (with battery) for about 1 hour.

A couple of quick shots of the tower coming together, It’s starting to get to big for taking pictures without showing the whole world what a mess my basement is.
The scaffolding is for the satellite communications dish and beside it will be where the solar panel will go, there will still be enough room for some troops should someone want a good sniper position.
Catacombs 90% completed now just had to do some touch up to the walls and once that dries I can paint and secure the ground floor…..

The plan is for this to be terrain, the current piece is the front, then there will be two sides (left & right) then a rear. The four pieces can be combined to make one big building or separated to turn a gaming table into the building and fight from within.
As of right now the front is my priority and then the side walls…

Picked up another Shrine of the Aquila tonight, notched out the stone at the base of the tower and started the left side wall which sustained blast damage.
Need to finish up tower outside walls but one panel short, trying a couple different ideas (hence the missing panels below left outer tower wall. I may just bite the bullet and buy a couple more on Epay.
Finishing up foam on left side but this is where the lighting electronics are going to be hidden so some creativity will be required in that area.
If everything goes as planned left walls will be ready for lights and floors tomorrow then back to the right wall and figure out something elaborate for the front.
Catacomb “touch-up” completed and wires all hidden, a little paint, some detailing and will be ready to permanently attach ground level floor.
Hope (and pray) to be putting some paint on this baby real soon.
Trying to leave the zombie out of the pictures, there has been complaints….. not from you guys… from him…. It seems he’s not feeling photogenic.

Wow! Who routed those tiles? They are so boss. I can't hardly believe how excellently they are done. Easily my favorite part of the whole project

But seriously, this looks amazing! If it ends up half as terrific as your train engine turned out Rhich, people will be speechless. This is definitely deserving of a place front and center to nine gaming tables pushed together for our mega battle. I can't wait to see it finished.

Slight oversight on my part, floor and walls on right side came up sort just over ½”. Took me a while to figure out, should I shorten the floor or lengthen the walls?
What I came up with was an “expansion joint” of sorts to fill in the difference, it took me a couple hours going back and forth trying to find a solution but I think it turned out OK…. One more to make and I start roof construction.
Left side also has an issue being I came up one freakin panel short and I keep getting out bid on E-pay.
I will be started on the left wall extension tomorrow (piece #2) of the four pieces to this building.

Friday night, got a little done. Supposed to be gaming but between the lawn mower not starting & my car needing brakes I figured it would be one of those nights so I buried myself in the basement.
On the way home from work today I took a different way (to swing by the parts store) I drove past this really cool church in Springfield and it gave me a couple ideas…. So here’s tonight’s progress.
I found an old watch and used some of the “guts” to make my clock’s gears + the photo etched bits from the GW basing kit.
The hands on the clock actually work……
Hopefully some paint tomorrow because it doesn’t look like the lawn is going to get mowed anytime soon.

Here’s a close up of the clock, I ‘m adding more details and the making the wall more ornate. The numbers need a little cleaning up but the front of the building should be ready to paint real soon.

Finally got the second section of the roof piece cut at tacked into place, gives a better idea of the roof but pretty much the rest is all going to be damaged and caved in. Also due to one wall bit short I had to damage the tower a little to compensate for the lack of undamaged wall pieces (I ran out) so now we have an idea of what the center section of the roof is going to look like.
Now I’m going to finish my lawn.

I finished the solar collector frame and mounting. This was major because originally I was just going to mount it on the tower and figure some simple angle and leave it at that, only problem is the angle of light in relation to the panel isn’t always going to be optimum to charge the batteries to power all the lights within the building….. So I hinged it to it now rotates from roughly 60deg to 0deg horizontal and pivots about 10deg L to R. I just have to build a frame around the collector and it will be all set.
With the collector in place I can start running the wires down to the batteries and begin to wire the front part of the building.

Sorry about the pictures, I had to get on a step ladder to take them….

That's what she said?

But seriously, Rhich, it's looking great and keep up the good work. In fact, the only thing that I keep wondering is what's the plan to get it out of the house and move it?

Also, I am a bit disappointed that you never once told us about the zombie down at the store.

I was totally not thinking about that when I did it….. now every time I look at it I can’t help having “flash backs” maybe I’ll model in some cables with clamps on the end of them…..

As far as getting it out of the house, I didn’t think of that either…. After it was mentioned I did a “dry run”… I have 1 inch on either side to spare…. But the wall between the garage and the basement is wood construction…. I also checked to see if my chainsaw starts (just in case)

Well tonight wasn’t a good night. I spent the better part of the day doing little details to the front of the building and while all that was being done decided to rotate the building so I could work on the back side.
Not really thinking anything could happen the building was heavier on the tower side and almost went over – I over extended the base on the work surface while rotating it……
If you didn’t get it by now the building tilted and although I caught it the tower came unglued and toppled off and away from the main building and crashed to the floor .
I’ve got about six pieces of tower I just picked up, I’m going to update and then walk away, maybe watch a movie or something…………… tomorrow’s another day.

I survived the fact that the tower had fallen and moved on. Today was a pretty good day as far as progress goes.
Finished the catacombs (less debris) had to relocate one light and added panels to the left side of the catacombs then drilled out a new hole and installed the light, I might add a little wear to the walls and possibly some rusting but all in all very happy.
The spill containment around the tank is completed and the ground floor was secured (IE glued) with the addition of some gravel and what not around the base. I Also installed the power switch for the lights in the left wall which was an afterthought then tested the wiring up to this point.
The right side of the building is tacked into place and painting was started. Should have the first floor lights wired tomorrow and wires up to the second and third floors I will also have to run wires to the top of the tower for the solar collector.
Finished the solar collector framing but need to make a clear protective cover for the panel so the collector doesn’t get damaged.

It's coming along nicely Rhich. I hope that tower didn't get too badly damaged. Did you get it back together yet?

If you need any rubble for the basement I've got some of sprue that I've ground up. You're also welcome to use my meat grinder if you like, It makes great looking rubble and it's mildly entertaining as well.

I actually began repairing the tower and have it pretty much back together.
Also snapped off another picture of the lights but you can really see them due to the flash.

I could use some ground up rubble.... I have a ton of sprue's......

Can’t get the skulls in time….
Raided the bits box at Base Camp and got a few more but after the Battle for the Shrine I plan on continuing to build the back half which won’t be completed in time plus I’ll be buying at least two more Imperial Sectors to finish this the way I want it.

Quick up date…..
Less than a week to go, making tons of progress… painting has begun.
Other than a “hick-up” with a can of textured paint that decided to quit after using it once and having to drive back to town to return it, wait in the return line, go back to the paint department and couldn’t find another can to replace it….. rummage through shelf after shelf and finally finding one can left…. I have begun to do final assembly.
Top of the tower is completed and solar collector frame is in place, running the wires from collector down to batteries tonight and should have solar power tomorrow……
The right wall is all laid out just need to do the floor tiles…. And put that al together….

Pegasus makes it.... the kit is called Chemical Plant... the spill containment wall is scratch built.

Made some progress today, finished wiring the solar collector and wired into batteries all tested and ready to power lights.
Whole panel and mounting finished and attached to tower which had to be finished or the little wires would certainly get ripped out if it wasn’t. Wires all hidden in tower.
Trying to button up communications dish but not happy with it so far (feel free to email me or PM me with ideas but time is running out) So the dish pictured may be the direction for now.
Tower permanently attached to base now to !!!!!! no more dropping the tower…. Began dry brushing .
Dry run completed…. Still fits out the door….

Tested the LED’s and ran 12 for five hours without even going dim…..

Started the final painting tonight, blending dark gray, light gray then some highlights. Trying to use my air brush for the brunt of the walls with a little dry brushing here and there.
Finished the first two rows of steps (didn't quite get them in the picture)third row was set but found out I cut a little deeper than required so back filling with some foam which is drying and will finish tomorrow. added a banner…. Once dry I’ll weather that and seal it.
Clock is in “final countdown” mode, I wanted it 99% done tonight but decided to go around and add details like more rubble and some color here and there.
Don’t worry guys…… she’ll be ready.
