The Exploits Of The Catachan 222nd. @ 2011/05/19 22:35:54

Inquisitor Gyrem walked down the bare metal corridor of his ship. The "Invictus Sanctum" was a small frigate with enough hidden firepower to put down a light cruiser with relative ease. Its true power came with the Inquisitorial Rosette Gyrem bore and the authority it carried. Gyrem stopped at a sealed door and removed one of his gloves revealing a strangely pale and human hand. Gyrem pressed his hand into a small alcove inset next to the door and winced as the Identity and Secure systems worked, checking his genetic profile and all of his other characteristics. Gyrem was an average size standing just over 5 feet and eleven inches. He had a fair amount of muscle and it was toned from his hard years as an Interrogator. His hair was black and starting to turn shocking white, his eyes were a deep blue but were augmetic allowing him to see further and with greater clarity than normal men. The I&S Machine Spirit was almost too secure, almost too paranoid. Last month it had almost fried him after he attained a deep scratch from a small fight on Parjem Secundus and had forgotten to re-enter his parameters.

The machine spirit beeped twice and the doors slid open without a whisper. Gyrem entered a bare metal chamber. It was perfectly spherical down to the last nanometer and the outside was plated in neutronium, the hardest substance in the galaxy. This was the most secure space on the ship and only he was allowed access. A adamantium bridge pier extended to the middle and at the end sat a throne with a jungle of snaking cables and buzzing wires extruding from it's back like the hair of some terrible hunchbacked creature. Gyrem walked to the throne and lowered himself into it. He placed the helmet onto his head and opened his mind. Like many of his fellow Inquisitors Gyrem was a psyker, this machine served to amplify his thoughts and allow him to perform feats greater than that of many psykers. It also allowed him to contact others without the need of an astropath. This was his current intention.

On the psyhic plane he allowed himself to take a form. It was tempting to sit there and just feel the power he had but eventually that would draw daemons down on him and although he was confident he could fight off most he didn't have time to play around. He assumed the form of an Aquila, the double headed eagle, the sign of the Imperium itself. One head was blindfolded and the other head gazed with fiery eyes looking deep into the warp. Gyrem spotted his destination and his avatar in the warp sped off through the currents and the eddies navigating them with ease.

He arrived at his destination, it was massive, almost the size of a large asteroid and filled with the hopes and souls of untold billions. It was also moving. It was the Craftworld Ithanduril. Currently Ithanduril was passing through Imperial space but after brokering a bargain with the Inquisition they had been allowed to pass unmolested, in return for some services. The Farseers of Ithanduril were to look into the future for the Inquisition until they had passed form Imperial space, after that they would respond aggressively to any appearances by Inquisitors.
Gyrem's Aquila landed on a platform next to a Seer named Faranda, the Seer grimaced at his avatar with obvious distaste.

"Must you take that form?"She said her voice ethereal and ghostly, her own avatar was one of a female Eldar child. Presumably someone important to her.

"No, i can take this" Gyrem's avatar rippled and changed into an Inquisitorial Rosette "Or, this" he rippled again and changed into a hulking Space Marine clad in green and gold "Or i can be this" his avatar rippled yet again and changed into a perfect copy of Faranda's, she shivered at the avatar.

"Keep the ugly bird then" Faranda said

Gyrem rippled and changed to his Aquila form with ease, it was his favorite.

"You have come for the seeing?"

"I am where you told me to be, i have come for the seeing"

"Very well" Faranda moved across the platform to an archway of shadow.

The shadow was caused by a piece of particularly resonant psychic wraithbone, it allowed the Seers of Ithanduril to see further into the future than most other Craftworlds, they had used this to great effect throughout their history dodging wars, direct attacks on their home and even altering the course of an entire Waaagh to keep their home safe.

Faranda's avatar peered through the archway and spoke.

"There will be five servants of the arch-enemy. They will be free by blood and fire. Should any of their plans come to fruition your people will pay a great price. The first shall seek to turn you against yourselves. The second shall seek to poison your bodies with disease. The third shall try to corrupt your mind with trickery. The fourth shall seek to enslave the minds of many to turn them against you. The fifth shall be revealed as a traitor within you." Her voice faltered as she read the future

"What is it? What do you see?" Gyrem almost shouted

"Your salvation is uncertain. The jungle shall come and it shall bring 4 Devils, it shall come thrice bearing the number 2."Her brow furrowed in uncertainty

"The Jungle? What? Devils?" Gyrem was confused

"This alone shall not be enough for the Master will walk again. And his servants will try to join him. If you wish to live you will prevent this"

"And what of the Master?"

"He shall meet his end under the gaze of the Mistress and the Devils will be her guard" her voice was clear now, this she was certain of.

Faranda slumped to the floor, weak from exertion.

"I am sorry, i cannot tell you more" she whispered "You must go if you want to save your worlds"

"But, what abou-"

"Go now! This is bigger than your people, mine are at stake as well! I will contact you if i see anything else."

Gyrem stared into her eyes and then nodded. His avatar turned and darted off into the Warp.

Gyrem opened his eyes. He was back in reality. He felt the assuring solidness of the throne underneath him. He rose, shedding the helmet and walking along the pier to the door. It slid open and sealed itself behind him.

"Thrice bearing 2? What in the name of the Emperor does that mean?" he muttered

Marshall Larkin was seated in his office aboard the troopship "Sanctus Mauve" currently trying to stay on top of his new regiments paperwork, who knew that a bunch of green recruits could get into so much trouble, it didn't even seem that they were trying. There was a knock at the door and he called for the knocker to enter. It was Commissar Wasabi, a newly promoted Commissar and eager to show his devotion to the Imperial cause.

"Marshall have you seen our new deployment orders?" He said, his tone cold and efficient and his face grey and dour.

"You know i haven't Commissar" Larkin said nonchalantly

"Good so i get to tell you the great news" his entire mood changed from grim and sour to warm, or at least as warm as a Commissar can get. His tone was full of sarcasm.

"This great news isn't so great i assume"

"Well, no"

"Go ahead, spoil my surprise" Larkin said resignedly

"We are being diverted to the Tankronis system"

He looked up his eyebrows raised in surprise "Oh? Which planet and why?" he looked back down at his paperwork

"I don't know about the planet but i have heard there is an uprising going on, the entire place is a warzone"

"And, the powers that be have decided a green regiment is the best thing to send into battle against a rebelling populace"

"Marshall you know as well as I do, no Catachan regiment is ever green"

"No you have a point there" Larkin admitted

"I was thinking we could issue the order to start urban drills?"

Larkin raised an eyebrow "We?"

"You of course, i shall oversee the drills whilst you get round to this nice stack of paper work, by the way i would let Kerrick and Wolfshead off of that contraband charge, it's bad for morale and all that"

"I was going to give them half rations for a month but they would probably enjoy the challenge" Larkin remarked

Wasabi murmured an agreement "Most likely"

He rose from the chair opposite Larkin "Shall i start urban drills?"

"Be my guest Commissar"

"As you wish Sir" He snapped off a perfect salute and marched out of the door stooping only to turn and say "You'll see sir the 222nd will do you proud"

"I'm sure they will Commissar" Larkin said

The "Sanctus Mauve" carved her way through the warp with a dagger of real space. Deep within her ancient bowels a wonder of technology kept over seven thousand souls from a terror filled and bloody death. The Geller Field Generator. It creates a pocket of real space in the Warp. The nightmarish horror filled realm of Chaos, a horrific parody of the Emperor's universe. The pure and undiluted substance of all mankinds hate, rage, suffering and sin distilled into an entire universe of insanity and impossibilities.

"Such pretty colours" murmured Arkanian through an alcohol induced haze as he stared through an alcohol haze at the mural covering the armoured shutters of the view ports. It was these shutters and only these that kept them from going insane. Behind them was the warp, a mirror of realspace which could twist a mans mind and dive him mad.

"Whassat?" Seric slurred on the floor

"Shut up, yer drunk" Hawks managed lying next to him...

"Howsabout you both shut up" Sigmund growled, also from the floor.

Arkanian prodded Sigmund with the toe of his boot "Says the man that downed a bottle of Catachan's finest"

"I can handle my drink unlike you light weights" Sigmund said smiling

Hawks, Wolfshead, Haze and Pintus stumbled through the hatch and into the observation gallery.

"Boss!" Pintus yelled and then squinted puzzled by something "Why are there two of you?"

"One of me was too much for the Universe to handle" Seric said surprisingly quick witted for his current inebriated state

"Where are the gunners?" Arkanian asked

"Gunners? Oh yeah, they-er... got caught" Wolfshead said looking away quickly

"Caught? What do you mean?"

"Office politics, what can i say"

"Wolfshead..."

"Wasabi grabbed them right after they were sneaking out of the Commissary"

"What!"

"Yeah he must have been waiting for us..." Haze put in

"This is bad, this is really bad. Where are we gonna get more booze?" Arkanian said

"Who do you think we are? Amatuers?"

"You got some?"Arkanian asked, hope dawning on his face

"Course we did" Wolfshead held up a bottle of clear liquid "Drinks up lads"
Their laughter echoed around the chamber.

The plasteel lined room was four feet by six feet, with a steel cot taking up one half of the room and a small toilet at the far end, there was little in the way of luxury. The sheets were thin and scratchy. Samael 'Tazz' West hated scratchy sheets. It was unusual for a Catchan to despise uncomfortableness but he did. He didn't mind sleeping in mud, trees, in tiny metal rooms or even up side down in the hive of a group of angry Sakik bees. Scratchy sheets however he could not stand.

Tazz sat up and discarded the sheets. He could sleep without them.

"Hey Tazz" a voice whispered from nowhere. Tazz ignored it.

"Hey Tazz?" the voice came again. Tazz continued to ignore it.

"Tazz are you dead or what?"

"Yeah i'm dead so shut the hell up Schrute!" Tazz whispered back wanting to yell at him. There was silence.

"Hey Tazz?"

"What is it Schrute?"

"Do you think the Commissar was waiting for us?"

Tazz glanced through the bars cells cells opposite where Giles and Sam slumbered undisturbed by scratchy sheet or questioning idiots.

"Yeah i do think he was waiting for us Schrute, now go back to sleep or I'll be stuck in here on a murder charge"

"That's not very nice Tazz"

"Don't make me make you" He warned.

Schrute was silent.

The 'Santcus Mauve' carried on slicing her way through an ocean of unreality when it shook hard. A colossal impact slammed into it shaking her to the core. Aboard the titanic troop ship naval ratings ran around checking vital systems and ordering reports. After a few minutes of organised and well-drilled panic a cold, steely metallic voice devoid of emotion sounded across the sound system.

"All hands prepare for emergency translation"

The machine spirit of the 'Sanctus Mauve', the very soul and heart of the ship had spoken.

Real space was quiet. It was always quiet. It had to be. It was a vacuum and it still is. If there had been sound in space the re-entry of the Sanctus would have sounded across the patch of nowhere the had arrived in. The sound would have been a long droning tortured sound, slowly grating across every nerve in the body and several that don't exist. It would slide down your spine and create a horrible clench in your tail bone. Then it would stop and only silence would reign.

Captain Armatz of the Sanctus strode across the bridge. The command center was lit by the glow of monitors and

"Status report now!" He barked, he way infamous for his willingness to execute men for incompetence. Strictly the ships commissar was meant to do that but sometimes Armatz didn't wait.

"We were hit by something sir, we aren't sure what yet" A rating said from across the bridge.

"Find it, quickly" the rating nodded, saluted then scurried off to find the cause of their emergency departure from the Warp "Do we have anything on Augur?"

A rating at the augur station looked up from his work "I'm getting something but i can't- wait, I'm picking up multiple signatures now sir" the rating started adjusting instruments to fine tune what he had found

"What are they?"

"Mixed signals sir but they are guided, possibly fighters from the look of it"

"Activate point defense turrets"

The augur station was also in charge of the point defense turret. The 'Sanctus Mauve' was a troopship, she wasn't outfitted with weapons to fight other starships. All she had were turrets designed to fight off torpedoes and fighters or bombers that got too close.

"Point defense turrets activated sir" All across the exterior of the ship servitors slaved directly to autocannon quads became active and began scanning for targets. n the case of these servitors targets constituted anything not Imperial.

"What is the status on our engines?"

"Engines report ready status, Warp Engines will be back online in 20 minutes sir"

"Good, get us going ahead half"

"Ahead half aye sir"

"Any news on what knocked us out of the Warp?"

"None sir though the Navigators seem to think it wasn't a natural phenomenon sir"

"Keep on it, what about those objects"

"They have all been destroyed, hang on... we have a cruiser sized vessel approaching sir"

"What? Identify it"

"Ork ship sir, identification isn't registering"

"What's our Warp status"

"Nothing yet sir"

"Ork ship slowing to matching speed, sir"

"Go to ahead full"

"Ahead full, aye sir"

Armatz glared at the screen, he had been a captain for almost 50 years. 30 of those had been spent on the 'Sanctus Mauve" and he wasn't about to lose his treasured ship. Not now.

"Status of Warp Engines!" he barked

"Still nothing sir"

"Damnit" Armatz paused before pressing a button on his command throne "All crew this is the captain, prepare to repel boarders. Don't give those bastards an inch of our ship without paying for it in blood"

Suddenly sirens wailed and Armatz could see in his mind's eyes, almost two thousand souls arming and armouring themselves for the battle ahead. He could see them praying and sobbing in terror. He could see them ready to do their duty, no one on the Santus would allow her to be defiled by any enemy let alone one planning on plundering her. It was then he realised that they were also transporting over five thousand well trained guardsmen.

"Give the order to arm the Guardsmen, we need as much help as we can for this"

The rating hesitated before giving the order. Guardsmen were trained to kill, having them in a close environment for the duration of a long voyage whilst armed would turn most transport ships into a slaughter house in relatively short order. For this reason Guardsmen had to turn in any weapons they had, even now they wouldn't be allowed their weapons back for fear of puncturing the hull. Instead they would get navy issue carbines and shotguns, perfect for on board fighting and deadlier for it.

The ship suddenly pitched sideways, the artificial gravity failing for a slight moment.

"Sir, that was it, the cruiser has us"

"Keep engines at full ahead, lets not make it easy for them"

"Aye sir" the rating grinned

"Warp Engines?"

"Still unfinished sir, Magos Archannan is delaying them until the boarding action ends, he is expecting some company"

"Tell him to carry on as he sees fit"

"Aye sir"

"Sir, boarders are beginning to breach the hull, we are getting reports of fierce fighting throughout the ship"

"Emperor save us"

But....but...why would they lie?!

Fact remains Catachans can hold their liquor. I dun care my squad boys down alcomahol like water every night, so long as it doesn't make its way onto the firing range.

It's their traditional duty, their right, their heritage to get s**t-faced every night.

If you only knew the sacrifices we Tankers make, the unnaturalness of merely being encased in this infernal device as we charge into battle... the mystifying rituals we need to learn merely to get these lumbering beasts to just MOVE... you would also ensure that you are Sh**tfaced at least 75% of the time... and the other 25% you should be rat F*ck drunk!!!

I concider my driver to be an anomoly to the entire universe... but then as you can hear from the Vox casters mounted on our hull the veal and love for the emperor expessed in his continuose chanting in the only thing stopping him from drowning himself in a barrel of Promethium while smoking a bac stick...

...of course as his Sgt. I concider it my duty to ensure that his "ration" is consumed so as not anger whatever spirits have been keeping us alive and operating...

Tazz awoke to a scream.

"Emperor's teeth Schrute shut up! The commissar isn-"

The rebuke died in his mouth. Standing before him was a small mob of tiny green humanoids. Gretchin. Tazz had heard stories but he had never seen one in person. They were small and scrawny and would have been pathetic if not for the cruel gleam of malice in their eyes and the blood hungry gleam of their weapons.

Over their heads Tazz could see Giles and Sam facing similar situations.

"What the hell is this?" Schrute yelled

"We must have been boarded" Giles said

"And no one woke us up?" Sam said incredulous

"These nice green fellows were good enough to wake us up" Tazz gestured to the Orkoids...

"What do we do?" Sam asked

"We wait until they cut the doors open then beat the crap outa them and find the others" Giles said cracking his wide knuckles

"Where do you think they are?"

"My bet is with the tanks in the bay" Schrute said "The bulkheads are thick enough there to take heavy bolter fire easily, they can seal the tanks and just fire the sponsons and hull-mounted"

"Makes sense" Tazz commented

"Anything in the way of weapons?" Sam asked hopefully

Giles grabbed the small metal toilet and pulled. There was a screech of tortured metal and it gave way "I got something" he said, grinning

Commissar Wasabi was in his cabin when the boarding alarm went off. His first thought was to join Gamma platoon in their section but then he realised there was the small matter of the gunners he had caught trying to break into the Commissary last night. Inwardly he groaned. The prison was far from anywhere critical and would most likely be ignored but he still has a duty, if those gunners died because they couldn't get out he would feel the guilt of their deaths for his entire life. He loaded his shiny new issue bolt pistol, checked his power sword pulled his black great coat on and donned his cap. It was time to make legends.

"Tazz they're almost through" Schute said

"I can see that Schrute" Tazz grumbled, Schrute was starting to get on his nerves with his constant observations

With a loud clang the gretchin cutting through the cell lock mechanisms finally managed to achieve their goal. The locks cracked and fell to the floor. The doors swung open and the gretchin rushed inside.
Giles brained one with his improvised weapon and the rest halted as he began swinging in wide arcs slowly pushing them out of his cell. Schrute was a quick and lethal blur. He grabbed the first knife thrust at him, broke the owners neck and turned the weapon against his friends, the cell filled with shrieks and cries for help.
Sam set into the gretchin and used his muscled frame to turn a gretchin grabbed by the leg into a deadly flail of green skin and shattered bones. Tazz took his boot of and used it to crush the skulls of three gretchin before any of them could land a blow on him. The gretchin broke almost immediately but as they ran out of the cells they turned into a mob of uncontrolled fear and terrified running, after a second they managed to figure out which way to go and made for the door. It slid open and a black figure stood in front of them, pistol in hand and sword blazing with energy.

"Troopers?"He called out

"It's the Commissar Tazz!"

"Emepror's teeth! I know Schrute!"

The prisoners piled in from behind and the commissar killed anything coming towards him with a quick slice of his power sword. In a few more moments the mob of gretchin were dead.

The commissar stepped forwards into the light of the brig. Eyeing their improvised or stolen weapons he spoke.

"I came to get you as soon as i heard the boarding alarm" He explained "I had a few problems getting here however"

The troopers eyed his ichor stained great coat and the sizzling blood on his power sword.

"Don't worry sir, we had some problems and we weren't even going anywhere" Tazz said and the gunners burst out laughing in a display of nervous energy

"Well trooper, put your boot back on and follow me"

The gunners paused

"With respect sir can we join our crew?"

"You know where they'll be?"

"The bay sir, it's where the tanks are"

"Of course they would go there" he sighed "Okay head there but i need to run an errand of my own"

"Of course sir" Tazz saluted for good measure and the gunners followed suit "We appreciate you coming to get us, no one else did"

"Well, i can't let the orks get to you before i can, can i" Wasabi said, half joking as he turned and walked away with a smile.
The gunners were left with a look of shock on their faces, Sam dropped what was left of his gretchin flail.

"Come on" Said Tazz pulling on a boot "We have to get out of here"

"What about weapons?" Giles asked, his improvised one was a mangled mess of brains and metal.

Tazz reached behind the duty officer's desk and pulled out 3 power mauls and a auto pistol. He threw the pistol to Schrute who check the load and snapped it back satisfied. Tazz passed the batons out to Giles and Sam before activating his own one, it fizzled reassuringly.

"Now then" He said with a grin "Whose up for a reunion?"

Wasabi stalked down the corridor. He had found a working lift and it had taken him to one of the levels with cabins usually reserved for important officers such as generals or anyone else higher than Colonel. There was only one occupant of this entire deck of stately rooms and that was Lord Commissar Von Humphreys or Von Humps as the troops called him. Wasabi grinned at the disparaging nickname, the Lord Commissar in a rare display of humour took it on as his call sign much to the humour of many of the vox operators.

Wasabi's grin faded as he turned a corner and saw the wreckage of the door to the Lord Commissar's cabin strewn across the corridor and sounds of fighting within. He drew he sword and ran to help.

Wasabi entered the cabin and saw complete havoc. The stately foyer was a wreckage of large caliber holes and bodies, none human, yet.
Wasab stepped over the corpses of some of the biggest Orks he had ever seen, they were massive muscle bound hulk toting guns big enough to make one of the Catachan strain with effort. Another crash came from further inside. Wasabi cautiously entered his sword at the ready.

The scene that greeted him was surprising to say the least. Von Humps was engaged in hand to hand combat with one of the hulking orks. His greying hair was stained with ichor and his great coat had been completely discarded, his hat was nowhere to be seen. An ork corpse lay in a corner, the Commissars prized power sabre in its guts. The commissar and the Ork were circling each other both were covered in sweat and the commissar's augmetics were whirring furiously.

The Ork lunged and the commissar's left hand snapped down on its reaching arm before his right slammed into his face re-breaking its nose.
The ork howled and clutched its nose, the Von Humps danced away from it and reached for his power sabre decapitating it and severing its hands in a single blow. Planting the sbre in the orks back he walked to the desk in the centre of the room he reached behind it and came back with his cap.

"There we go" he said conversationally "Now we can get this fuss over with"

"Sir" Wasabi saluted "Orks have boarded the ship" he immediately felt foolish, considering orks had been trying to kill the Lord Commissar

"What?" Von Humps was shocked "You mean this isn't a dream"

"Wha-" Wasabi was confused "no sir, this is real life"

"Hmmm, felt like a dream, oh well" Von Humps checked his great coat over, it was in bad repair "Well whilst we are both here give me your coat"

"What?"

"Your coat man, give it to me"

"Yes sir" Wasabi took the greatcoat off and handed it to Von Humps who took his own off and passed it to Wasabi

"Much better" He said, pulling it on "Nice hat by the way" he said with a wink

"Yes sir" Wasabi said pulling the Lord Commissar's own coat on

"Now then we need to find the Marshall and the rest of the regiment don't we?" he mused

"That would be a good idea sir"

"I think i remember the Marshal saying the rendezvous location was Alpha platoon's mess hall"

"That seems about right sir"

"Can you get us there?"

"Yes sir, i think" Wasabi said uncertainly

"Don't worry, we'll stop and ask for direction if we get lost" he said with a grin

They left the cabin and found the lift again, it took them to what was loosely termed Alpha deck as it was the temporary home of Alpha platoon and the command elements of the 222nd. The deck was lit by emergency lighting, the flashing red lights creating a feeling of worry in Wasabi but he suppressed it. They continued down the coridor to a solid looking metal hatch. Von Humps tried opening it but it was locked from the other side.

"Now what was the regimental emergency band" he wondered aloud whilst fiddling with his vox bead

"Channel Gamma Kappa" Wasabi said, he had been tuned into it ever since he had been awakened, which is why he had bad feeling about what was behind the hatch

"Hmm" Von Humps said, adjusting the bead "Dead, lets try the standard channels "He fiddled with the bead again and it came to life "Ahh much better"

Wasabi changed his own bead not mentioning his fears.

"This is Von Humps, to all units inside 222nd rendezvous we are outside mess hall hatch #6 open up in there would you"

They heard sounds of scraping and screeching as the door mechanism shuddered and moved, swinging wide open and revealing a squad of auto rifles and a heavy flamer looking at them.

"Guns down lads it's the Commissars" a voice called

"Marshall good to see you are alive"

"Equally good to see you're alive" Masrhal Larkin said, his voice lowered "Why is Wasabi wearing your coat"

Von humps laughed "Your eye for detail is impeccable, his was in better condition than my own"

"I can see, been in a fight?" Larkin asked jokingly

"I had some unwelcome company during my sleep"

"You thought they were a dream didn't you?" Larkin said grinning

"You know me too well, dream or not i dealt with them" both men laughed

"Commissar Wasabi" Larkin addressed the lower ranking commissar

"Yes Marshal?"

"I believe your services may be needed in Gamma platoon, they have a hard time ahead of them"

"Of course sir, i'll make sure they do as ordered"

"Much obliged Commissar" Larkin turned and walked back to his temporary command post with Von Humps, Wasabi turned to locate Gamma platoon.

This is shaping up quite nicely, thought I might jump in and through up a little personal log, sometimes its nice to see things from the bottom of the pyramid. I'll keep this going unless I end up official KIA, but we don't that now do we? :p will have more to add once Pvt.Jenkins has actually seen some action :p

EYES ONLY - 000-Marshall Larkin
An extract from the personal logs of 059-Pvt.J.P.Jenkins.

I’ve been asked by the sergeant to keep a log of everything I think and do, something to do with ‘improving the way we think’. Complete crap if you ask me, but an orders and order – all the way from the top, or so they tell me.

I still can't sleep, the sound of the engines is driving me crazy. I wasn’t expecting five stars, but a couple of ear plugs wouldn’t go a miss. It's been such a haze, one day you are minding your own business and the next you are on your way to protect the galaxy in the name of the emperor. It truly is hard to comprehend.

I haven’t had much time to get to know my squad yet, they seem quite distant, but war does that to you I guess. I had the pleasure of meeting another private being drafted in to the same squad as me, Private Jenkins! What are the chances? in my squad no less! I guess the galaxy isn’t that big after all, let’s just hope this doesn’t cause any problems for us in the way of orders, at least we don’t look the same! That would be a real nightmare.

I’ve heard the stories of the company’s prior engagement, they took on the green tide and came out smiling, a couple of the tank commanders wouldn’t shut up about it on the way over, didn’t catch their names butt apparently they ‘coulda done it with their eyes closed and a hand tied behind their back’! i’ll have to find out the whole story later however, I’ve heard we are due for our next engagement in less than two weeks time. I don’t know where we are going yet, but I’m frontline, and that means if I ain’t worth my salt, I ain’t coming home.

I’m ready for death, but not ready to die. Not until I beat the life out of as many enemies as I can get my hands on

Commissar Wasabi scurried down the maintenance duct as he followed trooper Icarban in front of him. A faint light permeated the duct and allowed a faint shadow to linger on everything, like an unwelcome and unwholesome stain. His vox bead chirped as Captain Rahem issued an order to halt at a junction they had just arrived in and summoned his sergeants to the front. As a Commissar Wasabi has Commissariat override codes allowing him to listen in on every transmission he cared to keep track of, right now he was patched into the company command network. Wasabi slipped past Icarban and made his way to the captain and his command squad where they were discussing their options.

"We shouldn't split up" Sergeant Marshal protested "The Orks can overwhelm us easily if we do that"

"We don't have a choice sergeant" Rahem said sternly "There are three passages we have to block and we don't have the time to block them off"

"We can take them if we make good use of the element of surprise" Sergeant Murray said confidently, he held a large pump action shotgun slung from a shoulder strap, a vicious looking knife slung at his waist completed the image of a Catachan sergeant.

"Agreed" Sergeant Hatchet said "We still have the flamers, we can toast those green fraggers before they even know we are here"

"Commissar" Rahem said, noticing his appearance "What is your opinion?"

"It doesn't matter Captain, we have to block these passages, to do otherwise is a gross dereliction of our duty to the Emperor"

Rahem nodded and made the sign of the Aquila, the sergeants followed suit.

"Okay, we split up but we stay in contact at all times, if you're about to be overrun fall back and try to hold them off further down the passage" Rahem said, confidently "We can break these greenies with minimal casualties but only if we stay cool" the sergeants nodded in agreement "Commissar, go with Murray's squad, you are to hold the passage leading to the Enginarium, they haven't hit there yet but if any get through it could be the end of all of us, myself and Sergeant Hatchet will take the passage leading to the lifts up to the Bridge, and Marshal's squad will stop them from heading down to the storage bay"

They all nodded and returned to their squads. Wasabi followed Murray back to his squad who had formed a small clump of bodies in the tightly packed junction. They raised their heads as Murray approached and their gaze visibly shifted as they took in the Commissar.

"Okay" Whispered Murray "We are holding the passage to the Enginarium, it is vital nothing gets past, if something does the Orks could blow us all to the Warp"

"Why will they be coming down this passage again Sarge?" A trooper named Mazzafero said, his voice was raspy from a large and vividly red scar that ran across his throat.

"Alpha platoon are going to lure the Orks into a kill-zone, once we manage that they are going to be pinned down, then we come up behind them and start shooting to finish off any survivors, we are also going to be holding the passages to stop anything that tries to run"

"Exactly" Murray said "So shut up and stop asking stupid questions, the Guard doesn't ask why it just does"

"I do things too" Icarban said with a wink, Murray reach over and smacked him in the side of the head

"Shut up Icarban, there is a time and a place for that"

Icarban opened his mouth to make another joke but a glare from Wasabi stopped him "Yes sergeant"

"Right then, Lonecoon, Guererro you're on point, we're heading down the pasage to the left" the assigned troopers hefted their weapons, an autorifle and a flamer respectively and moved to the mouth of the passage. "Razputain, Leok you're the rearguard, we don't want any greenies getting the drop on us in here" They nodded and flicked the safties off on their weapons "Everyone else fall in and move out"

"Hurry up, Schrute!" Tazz yelled "They're coming!" he looked down the corridor to the wall of green approaching them. The passage was huge, large enough to fit three leman russ tanks side by side with ease, it stretched 10 metres above their heads. The passage was built to be a pathway for armoured vehicles from the bays to the hangars. The hangers had been breached and as the gunners snuck past the Orks inside they were seen and pursued until they had reached the gigantic blast doors. They had found a smaller human sized door set to the side of the main doors.

Schrute was attempting to convince the machine spirit to let them in but they were running out of time.

"Almost their Taz, almost there"

"Come on!" Tazz said again, he looked round again and saw Sam and Giles charge their power mauls to full power before throwing them as far as they could at the leading Orks. Sam's maul hit the head of an Ork boy exploding it's head through the mauls powerful discharge, Giles' maul punched into the arm of the biggest Ork there and it bounced away leaving the Ork with a scorch mark. The Ork roared and re-doubled its speed.

"Got it!" Schrute said, his voice filled with relief

Sam and Giles sprinted through the door, quickly followed by Schrute and Tazz who stopped to hit the close rune on the doors mechanism, before destroying it with his maul and running through himself.

The tank bay was covered in blood and echoing with the raucous cries of Orks as they tried to jump onto the tanks of the Catachan 222nd. The tanks were not the only vehicles on the bay however, 4 sentinels danced about the bay using their heavy flamers to devastating effect everytime the orks gathered. The 'Marshall's Wrath' had popped its comand hatch and Sergeant Sigmund has using the pintle mount to cover the sentinels. An ork burna boy tried to toast him but Schrute raised his autopistol and put a slug through his head.
Sigmund turned in surprise and spotted the gunners, he waved them over frantically his voice lost over the din, the gunners started to run to the tanks, they just had to get past the orks and the gouts of fire from the sentinels first.

Wasabi crawled forwards following Sergeant Murray. The tunnel they had taken was tiny and the squad could barely crawl through it. The tunnels was lit by the ever-present light of the glow strips set into the metallic walls. They crawled in silence for what seemed like eternity but when Wasabi checked his timepiece it was only a few minutes. Then Murray stopped crawling and Wasabi heard Guerrero over the vox

"We're here"

Now all they had to do was wait.

Tazz sprinted past an ork holding a vicious choppa the ork began to chase him but Sigmund blasted him with the heavy stubber blasting the ork into chunks. Schrute killed another ork with his pistol and dodged a blow from a second ork before shooting it in the head and sprinting on. Giles and Sam didn't even bother fighting, having thrown their mauls at the horde they ran past the orks dodging and ducking the blows directed at them. Tazz made it to the Wrath and from its armoured hull he leaped onto the Catachan Bell sliding past Sergeant Arkanian and into the gunner's seat, it felt like an old friend. Schrute climbed onto the Wrath and into its armoured hull, he began priming the weapons but didn't fire, at this range the shells would kill more than just orks.
Sam and Giles made it to their tanks under cover of the pintle mounts.

Tazz pulled his headset on and was greeted by a stream of shouts and calls from the various sentinel pilots as the co-ordinated the fiery dance outside. Tazz shook his head, the sentinel pilots were crazier than most members of the regiment, apart from the snipers, they were simply psychopathic. Uhtred gunned the engine and the tank began moving crushing an unfortunate ork who was paying too much attention to a sentinel to notice the tank.

"Wooha!" Arkanian yelled over the vox "The Catachan Devils are back together and kicking greenie arse"

"I hear that Ark" Sigmund said

"After we finish these up what do we do?" Haze interjected

"There's a massive horde of them on the other side of those blast doors" Tazz said

"So, we open the blast doors and rip those bastards a new one?" Seric said

"I'm good with that" said Giles

"Looks like we have a plan boys, i'll get the sentinels to open up the doors and stand back, this is a job for tanks" Arkanian said descisively

The last ork fell to the metal claw of a sentinel with the name 'Frankie' stenciled on the side. As he did another sentinel walked across the bay to the blast doors and the knees bent, lowring the cockpit and allowing the pilot to jump out. The pilot leapt out activated the door mechanism and lept back into his sentinel starting it up and joining his fellows behind the line of tanks. The door umbled open and a sea of orks were greated with the flash of heavy bolters and the booming of their main guns...

[I'll finish the rest later on, i'm a touch too drunk to do anymore, which says more about this new cider than it does about me... i think]

Very nice writing. I like the part when the Guardsman says,

"Sir, we are getting reports of fierce fighting throughout the ship."

"Emperor save us."

Keep up the good work.

The first part was relatively good. The inquisitor was well characterised.

It was however a bit too derivative for my tastes.

Inquisitor gets in cerebro and talks of avatars you even use the term 'small moon'! If it was meant to be funny...... It wasn't.

The humungous dialogue that constituted the second half was also not to my tastes infact i would say dialogue to be the biggest weakness of your writing. You dont even conceal huge swathes of exposition, i am sorry it doesnt cut it for me. Must try harder.

The second part was weak i am afraid i didn't 'latch on' to any of the introduced characters.

Also for someone that is always pouncing on fluff inconsistancies why the heck are imperial guardsmen looking directly into the warp?! Something that 'to look upon is to go mad'

The tiny amount that WASN'T turgid dialogue was good, i dig it. However you need to work on more elegant solutions for exposition than clumsy two way dialogue.

BTW: I know it is part of the fun and out of your control but the more hilariously named guardsmen really blew my suspension of disbelief out the airlock.

You probably wouldn't have latched onto any of the introduced characters as the thread is mainly aimed at those who have trawled and taken part in the 70-odd pages of fluff that these stories relate to.

It's harder, much harder to write down events prescribed by 100-odd guys talking feth and battles fielded you didn't play.

Oh! Well isn't this an interesting post that I just found on another thread!

Perkustin said: I don't think alot of what purplefood has said has been fair tbh.

I was particularly taken aback by the supreme arrogance of the 'no challenges' statement. I think it is time i payed one of his fiction threads a visit.....

I looked through what Purple said. He was giving constructive feedback to a budding young writer who asked for feedback. "ooh! that's awesome!" doesn't cut it if someone's serious about their work.

If you wanna review Purple's stuff, instead of going to a light hearted fluff piece for a regiment, why not review something serious he's written?

Go troll somewhere else, Perkustin and leave the 222nd alone.

By the way, it's "paid" not "payed".

Everything he did was inline with what i asked him to do. it also based off of 2 actual tabletop games and it is based off of 70 pages of fluff, with people who PICKED those names. it is also meant to be tongue in cheek.

Next time you want to go demolish someones work unceremoniously
1/ check out where he got his ideas etc from
2/ don't do it to one of my friends.

Next time you want to objectively(well kinda ) criticise someones work on a public thread
1/ read, a different, seventy page thread

Tongue in cheek and the flaws i pointed out are not mutually exclusive.

Maybe Purplefood's tasteless mockery of Th3 Gh0st's entry for Lowmanjason's Fluff competition was 'tongue in cheek'?

If people offering constructive (okay the facepalms were churlish, i apologise) criticism aren't welcome in this thread i will go elsewhere.

Purple said something that offended him in a different thread, so he made it his mission to come and demolish purples writing,

We arn;t against criticism, as long as it is well founded, for example, most of your criticism was about stuff out of purples control.

Secondly, to assume that this story is tongue in cheek, therefore everything he says is, is moronic and petty, so stop trying to act intelligent

LASTLY i don't condone what purple said in the other thread, i will say it was unfair of him, but no one else seemed to want to come and destroy him..

While a little on the hostile side, he offered some criticisms to the work. Some will agree and some won't. After all, it's something purplefood happens to be writing simply for the fun of it,not to make a million dollars off of.
