The lastest commission I'm working on has a winged Dante analog for a chapter master, equipped with a sword instead of the axe, and having Astorath's wings by client request. Pretty pleased with how this is going so far - some details to add here and there. You'll notice some metal brackets on the base, these are there to counterweight the wings and will be covered in rubble once the piece is done.

The wings are from Astorath and I think the head comes from the Empire knights kit.

That is a beautiful conversion man. Seriously VERY impressed. The green-stuff work is really subtle but really good (particularly the 'V') and the pose is so fluid, dramatic and imposing. Really impressed by the pose.
Possibly your best work yet IMHO man.

The shield is heat-formed plasticard for the dome, with the rim being cut out of the same plasticard with a circle cutter.

Sorry for starting this thread here... If a mod could move it to the blogs section that'd be nice. :-)

Going to roll with SETMM on these chaps I think (Sky/Earth True Metal Metals). The shield rim is pretty much how it'll turn out. Going to sharpen the horizon a bit.

VMC Burnt Cadmium red, blended down to black, then blended up through blood red, golden yellow to a white/yellow mix. White/yellow used for lightning and edge highlights, with a few spots of white for sharp highlights.

[Commission] Sanguinary Phalanx Custom Chapter HQ @ 2011/06/18 09:42:45

Post by: winterdyne

No, the chapter master was to have a sword. The rest of the squad however will have (big, pointy) spears. Paintwork isn't to be up to quite the same spec, but as this client has been waiting patiently for ages I'm doing a little something with the conversions.

Moving on with the honour guard, here's a first take. This guy will eventually be the equivalent of a company champion. I'll probably swap the shield out for a bigger one and use this to make the rest with a press mould.

Great job on the Chaptermaster. In retrospect I think I would've preferred something to break up the gold, so possibly more colours on the shoulder-pads for example. Otherwise however, that's a stunning looking model. You should put that in CMoN I'd say.

I'm liking the look of the Honour Guard too. I think the spear should be aimed a bit higher, so he's lunging at the opponents chest rather than shins , but otherwise it looks good so far!

[Commission] Sanguinary Phalanx Custom Chapter HQ @ 2011/06/28 18:14:44

This guy's pretty much built. The wings are attached to the JP rather than the back, same as the Chapter Master. Will help with painting (the JP/wings are just tacked on):

And the Sanguinary Novitiate (Apothecary) - just his spear to finish off:

I may remove the decoration from the discs on the left shoulders and paint the chapter icon there instead... not sure yet.

For varnish I use Klear (AKA Future floor polish) and Tamiya Flat base. The precise mix depends on what I want to do. Gloss areas are pure Klear, most flat areas are about 80% Klear, 20% Flat base.

Amazing work as ever man; really impressive poses and if they look anything like the Chapter Master the painting will be sublime too.
Definitely think the 1st guy looks better with the raised spear and like he's lifting off something; the flowing scripture REALLY works too.
Loving the priest; the emblem on his shoulder pad and actually the base of his boot is done really well; he's got a great pose overall. Lovely work man.

More progress. I'll build the wings up to off-white, as on the chapter master. Little bit of cracking / chipping weathering to do. I think with the base finished this should look quite nice.

Looks great, nice colours with the white/bronze/red. I'm currently using a similar metallic red to detail my Death Company marines although my mix ended up with a slight pale purplish shine in addition to the red. I've got some glazes to go in order to end up with a warmer and deeper red tint. I'm wondering, did you use any red glazes on that colour?

[Commission] Sanguinary Phalanx Custom Chapter HQ @ 2011/07/12 15:51:59

Post by: winterdyne

Yeah, this is VMC Gunmetal grey zenithal-airbrushed up to VMC Silver, 3 coats of VMC Clear Red, Asurmen blue for shade, Baal red to tint it as it's a bit purply/pink. I'm a bit loathe to keep glazing more as it'll start to lose the metallic edge. A very high gloss should bump the contrast on it a bit... that's the hope right now anyway. :-)

[Commission] Sanguinary Phalanx Custom Chapter HQ @ 2011/07/12 16:00:10

Post by: Meph

A gloss coat would work nice indeed I think. And actually a mate of mine proposed an interesting solution as well, mix some mithril silver with water, let it settle a bit and soak up just the metallic flakes using the tip of a brush by gently dipping it in. He claims it works wonders to give a transparent metallic tint to any colour.
Personally I was first thinking on using Vallejo's Metallic medium to mix with red paint but in my experience the pale thinner used in the medium does tend to pale the tint a bit, which I feel will probably be a bit risky with red...

Aye, off to the alchemy lab!

Really nice miniature!s The red sword of the sergeantis simply gorgeous... The white is crips and clean, and is really hard to do a good white! I need the recipe! The gold is really nice too... I need also the recipe!

For do a red OSL, I have a simple recipe (Sorry for my BAD english if the explications are don't clear, just ask me for a better translation. ) :

Red gore mixed with chaos black for the basecoat, highlighted with pure red gore, red gore+blazing orange, pure blazing orange, blazing orange+sunburst yellow, pure sunburst yellow, sunburst yellow+skull white and finally a touch of pure skull white!

For do the illusion of a halo, just do red glaze on the parts where the light is reflected, or, like me, juste paint this area in red and put your finger on it with a lateral move lol.
Simple and perfect!

Wow,...just wow, I love the candied armor of the marine in red, that is a really nicely done job! how long does it take you to get the base red down and glossed up like that? a long process or fairly straight forward?

Apothecary is great, the legs look good, as if he's just landed next to an injured brother to check his signs, and the white is a really nice shade/tone.

Chapter master! yeah, he's not bad. nope not bad at all, in fact, i'd go so far to say he' one of my favorite mini's i've seen in a while! amazingly so! the gold and pose and face and shield and, well, everything about him i love, so dynamic and the techniques you used are very skillful and used to perfect harmony.

The candycoat is actually pretty easy - a zenithal job through gunmetal up to bright silver, followed by a couple of coats of clear red, then a watered blue wash followed by a glaze of baal red to deepen it. Gloss is applied by hand after the protective flat coat (Klear / flat base mix). I've seen gold progressions used that give a deeper, browner red.
