Hi All,
I'm after some advice on alternative colour schemes for nurgle. Green is great (I love painting nurgle miniatures) - but I want something that will stand out as different. My army doesn't have any fluff yet or even any models, apart from a half scratch built palanquin, a few chaos renegades - I thought these would make good initiates and a huge bag of bits (chaos and loyalist).
The plan is to buy one (and only one) extra squad or model (except dedicated transports - these are a must) and build the whole army from my bits box and greenstuff and junk. This may eventually end up going towards the Armies on Parade - but if I just get a new army out of it I will be happy!
First up I will build my chaos terminator lord... Sorry no pics - he's just a pile of bits at the minute.
Cheers Laney
Since I posted this - the thread has pretty much become a random mix of stuff (because I can never concentrate on one project long enough to finish it!).

if you don't want to paint them green try the guide on the gw site. they use brown colors to paint deathguard.
building deathguard from bits sound like fun^^ i built some of mine from berserkers and normal marine kits

Ok, I now have my colour scheme... go with me on this...
Burnt dark blue metal (it is armour after all) with rusted edges to give a highly corroded metal look. Paint is a long way off as I will build and greenstuff the whole army and then airbrush it in the basecoat - so a lot of converting to do first!
Here's a rough look at the colour scheme on a scenery piece I made... look at the tanks for the dark blue and rust I'm talking about...

Ok, so here's a quick update...
I've made two of my four allowed purchases (one box - a finecast daemon prince - without any issues! and 3 rhino dedicated transports) and I've sorted my bits into recognisable units linked to the army list - I have just enough parts for the whole list with some creativity and greenstuff. I also have a name - LEGION OF RUST and so does each of the units (each marine in the army will also get a unique name). Proper fluff to follow.
Terminator Squad 1: The Corroded
Terminator Squad 2: The Charred
Plague Marine Squad 1: The Decayed
Plague Marine Squad 2: The Rotting
Plague Marine Squad 3: The Putrefaction
Rhino 1: Morbus Sacer
Rhino 2: Mors Repentina
Rhino 3: Gangraena
The nurgle daemon prince is awesome, but he needs wings (and I can't buy more it's against the 'rules' of this army). So I delved deep into my workshop and came out with a box of old bones - perfect for making demon wings from scratch! Here is my initial effort - I wonder if it needs real feathers over the rough start - any thoughts?
![]() " border="0" />
![]() " border="0" />
![]() " border="0" />
![]() " border="0" />
Here is a little more work on the nurgle terminator test piece.
![]() " border="0" />
![]() " border="0" />
Tonight I plan to build at least the basic models for the 3 plague marine squads (minus the greenstuff work) and do the base work on the second demon wing.
As always feedback most welcome

What did you use to make the tank fluid!?
plus, nice idea for the wing!
30616
Post by: 02Laney
The fluid in the tanks is Easy Cast Clear Casting Resin - very easy to use - produces quite a few bubbles if not used properly (I'll post pics of the tanks later to give you the idea).
Thanks for the encouragement on the wings - should they have feathers attached (not covering but scattered, rotting and loose).

A big update on the army...
The bits box is almost completely drained of parts for making marines (still a few ideas fro other bits though - I reckon I've got another 500+ points in the box still if I'm clever)
I've managed to put together all five squads for my army (3 plague marine units and 2 chaos terminators) - I am now in the process of removing any icons from the models - with an occasional strategic one to remind them of which chapters they've come from - a BA shoulder pad here, a space wolf pelt there etc. The rest will be removed and kept clear - I want this army to look very battleworn, with little time for adornment of their armour.
I have a quick question - I have this old vindicator - in a rubbish state - should I keep it as a vindicator or turn it into a rhino and save myself the cost of buying another rhino (or loyalist razorback kit for the extra stuff)? Here's the pics...
![]() " border="0" />
![]() " border="0" />
And here's the rest of the army so far (very WIP)...
Melta gunners - plague marines

Plasma gunners - plague marines

Banner bearers - plague marines
![]() " border="0" />
Champions - plague marines

I'm considering a fourth (and possibly fifth) squad of plague marines, but my bits box is all but empty of marine parts. So, I thought I would re-assign some of my non-marine models to the cause (possibly mix and match with the last few marines I have to corrupt)... Here's the pics of the models I'm thinking of (mostly servitors)...
Apostate Preacher...
![]() " border="0" />
Possessed Guardsmen (would need a new paintjob)
![]() " border="0" />
Medical Servitor
![]() " border="0" />
Some nurgle cultist scouts...
![]() " border="0" />
Some weapons servitors (could easily become marines)
![]() " border="0" />
![]() " border="0" />
![]() " border="0" />
An astropath/psyker that might make a worthy servant of nurgle...

The weapons/conversions may need changing to make it work of course.
Any thoughts?

I like the fire on the flamer here, but it looks like his flamer is stuck on "on" and now he's walking around. Maybe give him a more static base and turn his head towards what he's flaming?

I'll try to fix the flamer guys head so he's looking the right way.
Colour wise (no paint yet) - I'm planning burnt metal with heavy rusting (armour) and pale flesh for the 'fleshy bits' - washed with purple/red washes. The whole army will be built and undercoated before they see any real paint - so maybe a month or so. I might produce a test model to see if the concept works though (so might see some paint sooner rather than later).
I've built a chaos sorcerer of Nurgle from some spare bits (mostly grey knight) with a heresy miniatures cyclops head (sorry for the dodgy pics)...

That's some great looking gore in that terrain piece! What's your recipe?
Cheers,
Rawson
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Thanks - the recipe is really simple...
Mix either mechrite red or red gore with a fine sand (I use chinchilla sand because it mixes well to create fleshy bits - plus if you mix it less you can indicate chewed up bone in there too). I have a friend who uses caster sugar as an alternative. Splodge it where you want it and move it round until it looks right.
Then while it is still reasonably wet add fairly heavy washes of badab black (nearer the body) ogryn flesh (the body and a bit further out), then baal red all over and the edges. Let it dry and re-apply if needed.
Last, coat the whole thing with a gloss varnish if you want it to look fresh. If you are after a more arterial look use blood red before the wash stage.
Hope this helps

Post by: Llamahead
Brilliant stuff here I'm especially impressed by the Scratch-built Thunderbolt and scenery. Interestingly enough I'm planning to head for the same rusted metal for my Chaos Warriors in the Grim Darkness of the Far Future although I'll be using weathered Bronze.
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Thanks for the great feedback guys (always nice to know you're appreciated!).
On the rust recipe... simple (using GW colours)
Undercoat: Black
Drybrush: Dark Flesh
Drybrush: Blazing Orange
Drybrush: Tamiya Colour Acrylic - Medium Blue (XF18) - alternative Shadow Grey or a 1:1 mix of Catachan Green, Ultrasmurf Blue, with a pinch of Chaos Black and Dark Flesh
(I tried some PVA weathering at this stage - but it was a total pain for no real benefit) - you could stipple to create blazing orange areas of simply drybrush the blue less
Drybrush: Blazing Orange again
Light Drybrush: Boltgun Metal
Wash: Gryphonne Sepia
Light Dyrbrush: Boltgun Metal
Selective Wash: Devlan Mud (because any recipe without Devlan Mud is incomplete!) - I use it on the main shoulder pads
So lots of drybrushing and some washing - job done - I chose the scheme to paint an army - otherwise I'll never finish it!

SO we are on the same path. I dont like the green plauge marines either. Mine are more of a dirty brown. Love the conversion work that you have been doing. Loooks awesome. How or what did you use to make those white pipes from the faces to the bodies on some of your conversions. looks great but its not guitar strings.
30616
Post by: 02Laney
The resin pipes came for Zinge industries - they do all sorts of useful little resin bits - the pipes look great but have a tendency to split if bent too far. I had to use them (because of my self imposed bits box rule). A better alternative are the metal cables from Dragonforge - they are ridiculously easy to use and now my bits box is empty I can order some more!

Thanks for the comments guys - helps to motivate me on this project!
The vindicator will definitely be rusty like the first squad - the whole army will end up that way (I may use the green nurgle lord - as he will really stand out). Lots more models (3 plague marine squads to finish - plus I caved and bought the finecast plague marine box - not allowed to touch it until the bitsbox models are finished though!) and greenstuff to come now that I've shown off the army colour scheme.
Current priorities: Finish crashed thunderbolt fighter scenery piece, finish the details on the terminators, greenstuff 21 power armoured nurgle marines! (and create my chaos lord - code name 'flylord'!)

Wow! I am really impressed and loving those conversions! I am wicked bummed I didn't find this sooner (quick note to my friends that have already posted here and didn't tell me about this- Gee guys, thanks. ) but I'm glad to be here now. It's cool to see that you decided to keep the Vindicator and not rip it down to a Rhino. I think you'll enjoy playing it and the conversion possibilities are endless. All of your conversions so far are well done. The Terminators are just perfect. So much detail into each model, really great stuff you have here.
My Death Guard started back in the mid 90's and when I got interested in it again in 2010 I kept going w/ a similar color scheme. If I had it to do over again from the start it would be more subdued / mottled drab.
Subbed and looking forward to seeing more. Excellent work so far and I expect everything to come will be as amazing.

Missile Launcher Heavy Weapons Teams Conversions (hopefully these will paint up well and give me a chance to practice OSL and smoke weathering)
My new officer of the fleet (reassigned from a skirmish game squad along with his Astropath and the rest of his crew) Ships Captain Lucifer Kidd (still WIP)
All my armies modelling is complete, with the exception of a few backpacks on my infantry and shotguns of four veterans. (Plus one more vet squad to go, still waiting on the parts from maxmini).
I hope to undercoat and start painting the rest of the company command and veterans by next Saturday.

A few more recent oonversions to finish off the army (white resin bits from Maxmini)
Stormtrooper with Sten Pattern Hellgun (made from an IG missile)... Sergeant Daniel Dare
Stormtrooper with partly scratchbuilt Hellgun 'Sten Pattern'
These are the beginning of a second stormtrooper/veteran unit with plasmaguns
Engineer Veteran (Veteran Squad with Meltaguns and Shotguns)

looking cool so far, is that storm trooper head the commando head from maxmini?
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Cheers - that is a maxmini head - I bought twenty of them to mix into the army (GW need to add more of these). I'd also like to add the WW2 type soft commando caps to the army but I can't find a decent company that does them other than westwind - I'd love some in resin. Anyone know of any?

youve got alot of glowing goin on here, but i think it is nicely done. i normaly HATE big feathered rogue traders but i think you've made him fit into this squad well. Now to the squad, you have really given it alot of character to where i can see this as a squad from a book or a film. the camo is great, you ogryn is one of the best ive ever seen, and i like your red base idea, ive never seen that before. Overall i say 9.5/10 mailny because nothing can be perfect and i feel with all this nice conversion work and cool models that you medic could have been a little more special
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Thanks - I really appreciate it. The Ogryn is one of my favourite painted models so far.
I might have an alternative medic that's a little more creative (I was going to use it as something else - but it might just work - no pics yet)
Here are some old models that I am revamping for the Psyker Battle Squad (Overseer and 2 psykers). I'm giving them a matt varnish and then adding a few highlights (sorry for the dodgy pics - my camera hates me)

Not much progress on anything. However I was inspired by an ace Nurgle Blood Bowl team. This led me back to my early days with Warhammer, Roleplay and Blood Bowl! I always loved skaven and had a team, but thought it would be cool to convert my own...
Here are some early WIP pics (I've dealt with the mouldlines) - sorry for the pic quality a daemonette has possessed my camera:
Linerat (converted night runner - paperclip faceguards and marauder/lizardman shoulder pads, helmet and armour is GS)
Thrower (another night runner - also paperclip faceguards and marauder pads) - I carved the hand open and made a greenstuff ball and fingers + helmet
A very dodgy pic of my two stormvermin WIP... the Daemonette killed the camera after this one
Any Ideas for a good colour scheme that isn't red?
The squad will be...
4 gutter runners
2 stormvermin
1 thrower
4 linemen
1 apothecary
3 team re-rolls
(total: 1,000,000)
Cheers Laney

models looking cool so far, im trying to get into blood bowl, but i need to play a few games to see if i want to invest. and for colors.. hmm red would have been my first choice, NOT yellow, green, or orange, possibly brown or purple, or maybie black metal with purple accents?

Post by: 02Laney
As always thanks for the feedback... I've made a bit more progress on the blood bowl team. In the end I went for a Purple with yellow trim and the team have an official name now...
The Cripple Peak Cutters
The thrower pics are still WIP but you get the idea (I've added more weathering and blood since these pics)... Mirk 'Viper' Warpfang No.10
Here are the other completely modelled members of the team - the other five I have left are waiting for helmets and face masks to be modelled, then I'll finish modelling a helmet on the rat ogre and complete the last four linerat reserves. If I get all that done then I'll complete some sideline additions (coach, wizard, apothecary etc).
A lowly linerat... No.4
My first gutter runner... No.1
Cheers Laney
(Necromantic or Orcs could be next - and then I need to join a proper gaming club - fortunately there is a league near me)
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
I need to move. I get in a game of 40K every now and then... the expansion games are what I really enjoy. Bloodbowl, Necromunda, Mordheim, etc...
Your Skaven team is excellent and has the aspect of humor that made Bloodbowl so perfect. Sometimes I think the Grimdark has completely taken over GW and it takes itself a tad too seriously these days.
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Thanks Skalk,
I've made some progress on the Skaven (enough to take a WIP teamshot of the basic squad - I also have a Rat Ogre, one thrower and three more linemen to model)...
I then thought about my bits box, because this thread was meant to be a money saving venture - so having spent out on some night runners, the orc squad I've gone for next is totally bits box driven - I then plan an empire human team (I have one or two human players from the boxed set to get me started - with an armies worth of empire bits to work from), maybe a norse team and necromantic (that will need a few bits) and possibly a chaos team (that will need a few more). By that time, hopefully I will have contacted the BB league for a friendly or two (having had lots of practice first!)...
Anyway here are the orcs... [ b]Da Tituns[/b]
Team Song
We is da red. An we is da black!
We's never retreatin', we always attack!
We is da black. An we is da red!
Yous get in our way and we gonna crush you dead!
Rookie Blitzer (first pick from the Darkthuner Academy) - Gark 'Da Shark' Ripwell (base model: ork stormboy)
Black Orc Blockers (2) No names yet! (base model: ork ard boyz)
Orc Thrower (base model: ork mek with burna)
Gobbos - not in the first team (basic grots), but could be recruited with a Troll Big Guy...
The team so far, including another WIP black orc...
I've got 2 more blitzers part done, 2 linemen and 1 more blocker (in various states). Which leaves me with one more blitzer to start for my starting squad.
The starting team is...
Black Orc Blockers 4
Blitzers 4
Throwers 1
Linemen 2
Not sure if I have room for an Apothecary, but I think I can manage 2 or 3 re-rolls.
Comments always welcome...

Thanks guys!
@Tortured Robot: Some cool renegades - cool paint jobs
@ Rogue Wolves: When I get back to them (no telling when that will be) I'll do a proper tutorial...
In the meantime, my camo recipes (all citadel paints) so far:
Urban Camo Recipe:
Black Undercoat
Adeptus Battlegrey base coat
Chaos black wash
Codex grey camo splodges
Astronomicon grey camo splodges (try to cross other the other areas of camo and be random - odd numbers work well)
Chaos Black dots/flashes
Skull white dots (optional)
Edge armour plates with either codex or astronomicon grey - makes all the difference
Autumn Forest Camo Recipe:
Black Undercoat
Charadon granite base coat
Devlan mud wash
Khemri brown splodges
Macharius Orange camo splodges (try to cross other the other areas of camo and be random - odd numbers work well)
Chaos Black dots/flashes
Calthan brown sploges (optional)
Edge armour plates with khemri brown - makes all the difference
Catachan green also works well in this mix
Jungle Camo Recipe (the one used on the command squad above):
Black undercoat
Charadon granite base coat
Ogryn flesh wash
Khemri brown splodges
Dheneb stone splodges (try to cross other the other areas of camo and be random - odd numbers work well)
Thin devlan mud wash (optional)
Flashes of bleach bone can also be added (optional)
Edge armour plates with khemri brown
Hope this helps

I really like these two guys, but i feel that the slaanesh marine is a bit too brutal looking. Personally i always imagined Slaaneshi to be elegant in the way they do things and look.
How did you make the shoulderpads on these two guys? are they from WHFB models?
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Thanks - they look like proper blood bowlers (I have the parts for a couple more - maybe I'll put these together). I also think a skinnier slaaneshi champion might be an improvement, maybe a modelling project for the future?
The shoulder pads are from the Ork Ard Boyz set - they also work great on terminators (if you want a more brutal, or pre-heresy look). The ones on the Khorne blocker are from the Chaos knights kit.

@genom.cor: Thanks, I did the knee pads on the carapace guardsman using black colour shapers (a flat black one) and an exacto blade to cut the edges to size.
All I've done in the last month is undercoat the chaos warriors. But I do have another WIP that I want to share soon.

Some more stuff to show. I've been working on a Descent of Angels list. I have planned all the minis and built two sanguinary priests, a librarian, a squad of vanguard vets and a few assault squad members. Still got a squad of sanguianry guard, a plastic dante and the rest of two assault squads to build. Once that's built and painted I'm going for a new blood angels army to replace my not so impressive current force.
I plan on playing them as a successor chapter of my own devising, with one of the following names (if you have a favourite please tell me)...
Angels Incruentatus (meaning Bloodless)
Furious Angels
Avenging Angels
Angels Repentant/Penitent
Sons of Lucifer
Shadow Angels
Angels Cimmerian/Black Angels (a little too close to the dark angels)
Anyway, here are the WIP pics...
Librarian (wings not attached to help painting)
Sanguinary Priests
Assault Squad Sergeant and Squad Members

Love the lightning claws!
how did you make the blades? I cant quite tell
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Thanks - I really dislike the usual lightning claws. Easy to do...
Take a regular power fist and cut the fingers off up to the first joint (leave the thumb), leaving a flat surface.
Take a terminator lightning claw and cut off all the claws (I used wolf claws for the longer claws).
Glue them onto the fingers and adjust to make sure they are evenly spaced.
Job Done

It did take a while to get something new to show - but glad you like it! I've been building, just not posting... 2 furioso dreads, 2 assault squads, 4 priests (including a plastic corbulo) sanguinary guard, plastic dante and mephiston and and honour guard (without jump packs) and a stormraven (still in the box that one).
Here are a couple more pics of the Vanguard (someone popped round in the middle of the last post)...
Colour scheme is: red armour, red helmets (for all assault marines), silver detail on veterans, grey on regulars, green eye lenses, bone coloured wings and dark blue blood drops.
Still not sure on the name though (the majority seem to already be a chapter of some description). Avenging Angels, or Angels Incruentus seem to be the best options (Furious Angels seems a little silly and Penitent/Repentant already exist). Any other ideas?

I've also been working on this 'prisoner' - The Caretaker - a genestealer hybrid left to wander the Space Hulk they are travelling in while the brood sleeps. beautifully done The OSL is fantastic, the plasma coils look great and the green is awesomely subtle. I like color palette, especially the orange. The one critique I can offer is that all the colors seem a little bright for the mutated denizen of a space hulk, but that's just me. The conversion work done is fantastic, and really rather creepy.

Ta Rogue Wolves - His bionic leg is a kitbash of two claws from a furioso dread close combat weapon and two antennae pieces from a battle fleet gothic imperial cruiser plastic kit (they make for great bionics. Though it would be tricky to make a bent leg version of this.

^that label is awsome, is it a transfer or legit painted?
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Cheers - it's always good when the little details get noticed! The warning label was made with a little square of blazing orange and then the outline and symbol completed with a very fine (005 I think) archival quality permanent pen. I'd like to see if they do other colours this fine to add writing/diagrams to books more convincingly.
I've handed the Captain over to the GW store now and picked up a Priest of Sigmar to convert into a Crusader/Inquisitor.
Parts used: dark angels terminator sword, right arm, storm shield, cloth and I symbol FW Hector Rex, main body priest of sigmar, purity seal (which is too big and being replaced) for a dreadnought, reliquary on his back - grey knight set.
CandC always appreciated. Any colour thoughts? Is was going to use a bleached bone, dark red and antique gold colour scheme, but that seems a bit boring (maybe a nice rich blue, bone and gold scheme?)
I will go back to the Blood Angels soon - but I'm in a conversion frenzy at the minute...

Excellent work, Laney!
I was scoping out the priest for a conversion, but hadn't come up with anything great. You, however, have
I think the Hector Rex parts fit extremely well, and I'm particularly impressed by the added cloth in the front.
Good call on the purity seal: too big for the model and also in comparison to the other purity seals. Do you have a solution worked out yet?
My only (nitpicky) CC would be on the sword hand: I'm not totally sold on the position yet. I can understand not wanting the architypical "sword raised victoriously" pose, but I'm not sure what you were going for here. His shield arm would suggest a stab, but the angle of the blade doesn't really work with that. What if you reversed the swordhand, creating the "haymaker" equivilent of a sword attack: big and wide. (I hope that makes sense...)
Keep up the great work!

@Rawson: I was after a sweeping slash (he is at the end of the move). So blood would be coating the blade. I tried the 'haymaker' but for some reason it looked weird at the elbow/gauntlet connection. Thanks for the feedback though - it's always helpful to have a second opinion on models.

hmm i like the grenade laucher conversion, i still have one or two of those musket arms and i think i need to try something like that..

@Progeen - I'll definitely get to painting soon - the plan is a purple/blue/blue-grey scheme (rather than a camo scheme). 3 or 4 more to build first, plus some GS work.
@Rogue - I like the sleeves rolled up look on the grenade launcher - I tried for a WW2 movie feel with him (but that's true of the whole squad)
Here is a little extra I was playing about with yesterday, using an excellent mini from Zealot miniatures... Daemonhost!

Just stumbled across this blog. Very cool conversions.
Seems like the quality of your work is rapidly improving. Conversions got cleaner and the painting seems to have made a real leap.

As always - feedback much appreciated.
@Baiyuan: Thanks - the prisoner was an attempt to paint a model that stretched my ability (It's now on it way to the Netherlands as a gift for a fellow gamer) and praetorian guardsman was painted for a competition, but all my painting seems to be going right at the minute (if I can stay patient!). It means a lot to have one the people who regularly inspires me to come and post - Cheers

Later on I hope to post a WIP sniper (quite pleased about him) and a couple of fairly run of the mill death cult assassin conversions (I realise that doesn't sound very inspiring, but they are straightforward dark eldar wytch conversions).

You're welcome. Always happy when somebody finds my work inspiring. I'll be a regular on your blog, now that I've discovered it. Of course you're always welcome to drop a line in my blog too.
The prisoner was a real highlight, while the conversion is simple and I personally would never have used such a "tank" for powering a plasma gun (or is it a cooling system? that would make more sense and even be quite inventive), the scene, pose and paintjob make it an absolutely lovely piece with lots of atmosphere.

Just had a look through this entire thread mate. Fantastic painting and modelling, your terrain pieces are awesome as well.
30616
Post by: 02Laney
Ta Biohazard - I've have a couple of terrain bits planned - not sure when though (too many projects, too little time).
The servitor as a spacesuit (which is what I was going for with the prisoner) thing, was stolen from a cool blog I came across - but it works well. Weirdly, in the skirmish game I play (in my sig), I intended this guy to have the 'coolant king' skill (reduces gets hot rolls) and for this to be a form of pre-heresy/dark age plasma cutter (it also needed to work as a plasma gun) - so the coolant tank idea works well.
The Caretakers rough history:
Originally a dark age of technology servitor, created from a criminal type. While passing through the warp the ships Geller field was disrupted for a second, allowing a daemonic incursion, which killed the crew, but left the servitors (in stasis) unharmed. After thousands of years floating in the warp the ship merged with the Space Hulk 'Hand of Sorrow'. A mercenary salvage team M32 activated the servitors, but due to various reasons left the Caretaker onboard ship (this story might get rather long). He finally, returned to true sentience following an encounter with xenos (nano type) technology on Deck 4537 of the Hand of Sorrow. To be continued....
I hope that actually made sense!

I like the fluff quite a bit. It suits the model well. Can't wait for more

Post by: 02Laney
Thanks Prime - call it a very rough draft. I need to write up the full story for my Prisoner. If it wins then he'll be enshrined in the rules (of the Deathsquads Skirmish game) as a special character.
Here are the other models I mentioned a couple of posts ago... Painting may need to wait till next week though!

Definitely a rust fan!
Snipers are pretty much always my favourite models (Vindicare are always first on my list - even if they aren't the best tactical choice).
I've been very busy this week, but found a bit of time to play around with an Eversor Assassin conversion (I've wanted to try one of these for ages). He still needs lots of GS work, but I'm pretty pleased with his overall look...
Parts: Skull head (no idea where this is from - it was in my bits box), Torso - maxmini combat armour torso, heavily trimmed (skull taken off a SM backpack and 'controls' from a cadian command squad respirator - I used 2 of these) , Arms - Catachan command squad box, Pistol ( SM Bolt pistol, BFG antenna, Scout bolt pistol scope (don't know why I didn't just use a scout pistol!) and the tank off an Infernus pistol, Neuro gauntlet (ghoul hand), Legs (chaos marauder legs - trimmed with GK backpack (teleporter) gubbins added), Backpack - tau fire warrior (with more BFG antennae, catachan sword, GK grenade). Note: I didn't buy any of this stuff to build this - I just found it in my box (hence the random mix of stuff).

Not too fond of the leg armor, but the rest is cool.
30616
Post by: 02Laney
@Baiyuan: I know what you mean, it looks 'off'. I think only more GS practice will cure that.
I'm overall pleased with the look (though muscular legs without armour may improve the model) and even happier that this was a bits box creation.
On to Inquisitor Valeria (Her range of kit presents lots of conversion opportunities). She seems quite a bargain for the points (or am I missing something?)... The cube is her Hyperstone maze and the graviton beamer is the huge weapon (pistol!) on her back - other stuff is represented by the various gubbins she is carrying. I'd love to see a GW version of this character.
As always CandC welcome...

thats cool, i like how the cloaks turned out and the details on the hood is great
39364
Post by: Baiyuan
Cool, good sculpting on the lettering. Still looks a little bit to dark eldar like, mainly the gun, the rest is ok.
Is the cloak stiff enough to paint it? Looks delicate, would be a pity if it broke off at the first chance.
30616
Post by: 02Laney
I thought with Valeria's fluff that she should be pretty much entirely xeno kitted out (with a few I symbols). I originally wanted a shoulder mounted gun for the gravitron beamer (but I didn't have the parts I needed). If I go for a light colour (bone perhaps) it may make the model more Inquisitorial and less Dark Eldar.
Once the cloak is fully cured I'll rub off the really thin bits, prior to painting. In terms of transport - special/delicate models tend to get their own box (rather than queezing in with the rest of the army). If I'm really paranoid about breakages I will blue tack it to the inside of a plastic jar lid and then screw the model inside the jar - that way the model is safe from the outside and isn't being squashed by packing material.

Post by: 02Laney
Hi Guys,
I love doing camo patterns. Here's the recipe for this camo (some old, some new GW paints used - sorry I don't know the equivalents yet)...
Base Coat: (New) Deathworld Forest (really smooth coat - in one)
Wash: (New) Athonian Camoshade (great tone, but a touch too shiny - I like matt models)
Camo Splodge 1: Catachan Green
Camo Splodge 2: (New) Ogryn Camo (similar to rotting flesh I think)
Camo 'Slashes': Goblin Green
Wash: Thinned Devlan Mud
Highlight (Not Done Yet): Deathworld Forest again (after two washes this works well as a camo highlight)
@Rawson: Thanks for the feedback on the spot colour, I've given the berets a wash of carroburg crimson to try to de-pinkify, not sure it worked fully, but I'm happy enough with the end colour, it marks them out from my other IG squads.
Here are a couple more WIP shots...

I'm not an ultramarines fan either (This is my second ever Ultramarine) - has to be Blood Angels all the way, but the armour type was too interesting to ignore! I was really pleased with how it worked out. My only regret with it is not being able to get the writing on the gold strips (even my 0.01 pen was too thick for it to work well).
As I play skirmish games primarily, I might build a 5 or 6 marine squad of these guys (definitely, not an army though). I'm really surprised by how few of these armour marks I've seen - I'd love to see more Dornian Heresy stuff for inspiration!

Cheers Guys,
I hope to get Dante finished over the weekend. However, in a typical 'can't stay focused on one project for more than a day or two' effort - I've converted a true scale Alpha Legion Marine, using the chapterhouse kit. I've used three of the marines in the kit so far - I have a Dornian heresy Ultramarine, Emperor's Child and Alpha Legionnaire (and a true scale Plague Blood Angel and World Eater made using the traditional terminator legs method and a regular scale Space Wolf and Raven Guard) - I'm working on getting the whole 18 legions at this rate!
Anyway pics...

Dark Heresy/INQ28 character...
I've finished Castus Kray, stormtrooper veteran sergeant of the Malfian 1st Regiment '1st on the field and last off it'.
Castus prefers to use a combat shotgun, rather than the typical stormtrooper hellgun. He wears carapace armour, with additional armour, including an adamantium plate on the front, which miraculously saved him from a genestealer attack as a young Malfian Whiteshield (during the ill-advised boarding of the Space Hulk Be Forever Fallen. This brought him to the attention of an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos who recruited him to one of her 'training cadres'.
The skull he wears on his shoulder was the very first heretic killed in her service. The tank on his back is part breather unit and part stimulant injector (hence his extreme musculature). The chainsword was given to him by Commissar Valkenstraum during the Defiance Campaign and on his back he carries a meltabomb 'because you never know when something bit might need to be blown up in the name of the Emperor'.

I never even started the command squad painting and Blood Bowl has taken over my life instead!
So far I have the parts for an Elf and Dwarf team, plus a modelled Norse, Skaven, Dark Elf, Orc and Chaos Pact teams. I've also ordered a Necromantic team from Vortice Miniatures - very pretty looking minis (as a straight painting team - no conversions). I also have my eye on the minis from Black Scorpion, the price is amazing and the minis have great detail (I'm interested in the new Amazon team - if they did a more 'normal' (not quite such big hats) it would be an automatic buy for me).
The Pact team is the one I have got farthest on, with the first XI well on the way (pics below).
The Norse Team (only Boris fully painted)...
]
The Dark Elf Team (one runner and lineman fully painted)...
The Skaven Team (just the gutter runners shown)...
The Chaos Pact Team (making progress...)
I'll post a few of my prototype models (human, dwarf etc) at some point. Apologies for the rubbish pics (taken on my phone in poor light!)

There is some truly amazing conversions here and totally original looking models, I have only gone back 2 pages and was like
Really loving the IG so much character squeezed into each mini great colour scheme and clever use of individual kits.
As for your blood bowl teams I love the fact you are creating your own from kits, I actually thought the Norse team was actual models at first then realised they were conversions.
Once again you have captured the look of actual game players more so than most of the official models, plus they look like a proper team.
I can't wait to see more and each team expand and grow, I can see some awesome conversion be created from this project.
Plus your posing is very dramatic and the representation of movement is spot on, I have enjoyed what I have seen so far and look forward to reading through this thread properly totally subbed

Thanks for all the positives Lone dirty dog - much appreciated. I love converting models more than painting (and any big army I try never gets finished!). I'll take some picks of my orc team soon. I have a human and dwarf player to show off too.
A few team names for you...
Chaos Pact - Drakwald Strange Attractors
Skaven - Cripple Peak Cutters
Dark Elf - Bad for your Elf
Norse - All the Rage
Orc - Green Crag Smashers
With a necromantic team on the way - The Graveyard Smash (complete with Monster Mash team song).

I had thought about a 'Good' Pact Team (as a counts as Chaos Pact team) - that could work... The Confederation of Gallant Gentlemen (you're going to get me building a new team!)
Ogre = Ogre
Treeman = Troll/Minotaur
Goblin = Halfling
Dark Elf = Wood Elf
Skaven = Dwarven Runner (not the best fit - but perhaps he wear no armour and is freakishly fast for a dwarf, so doesn't fit in to other teams)
Marauder = Human
Not sure what to make the final big guy from the warhammer world (I have a Mierce Dragonman which might work) - possibly some kind of Dwarven Construct perhaps.
Another possibility is to build and old school dungeonbowl team - but I want something playable.
Cheers (Orcs coming soon)

Could you not build a Dwarf steam runner to fit the role ?
Maybe something along the lines of this picture or you could try Titan Forge, they have some interesting Dwarf steam characters.

Gobbo
Black Orcs
Orc Throwers
Orc Blitzers
The Whole Team (Still needs a Troll)
Varag Ghoulchewer - Star Player
Necros...
Werewolf (Test Piece)
The Whole Team
No conversions with the Necromantic, the minis are lovely - from Vortice Miniatures - super casts, in resin (so much better than metal!). The only thing better would be plastic sprue blood bowl minis, for max conversion potential - I dream of the day when GW do team boxes on sprues for a new, improved blood bowl!
Anyway - that will never happen.
Cheers
