I am wondering that does anyone here field certain units in their army just because you like the unit. You like the way it looks or you like the fluff and field it because of a reason like that without the usefulness (or uselessness) of the unit mattering at all. For example I field a Leman Russ Punisher in my catachan army because I just like the way the damn thing looks. It takes a whole lot of points after being equipped with heavy-bolter sponsons and a stubber but I don't care. I just like it so that is why I field it. I named it "platoon" because of the amount of shots it can fire in a turn and it happens to be one of my personal favorite models.
So do any of you do this?

Kharn the Betrayer. He's not bad, of course. But people keep telling me to get a second Daemon Prince.
No way. I don't mind that he usually kills 40-60 points in friends and dies to a hidden Power Fist or Klaw. He eats walkers alive and so far has never let any enemy HQ live long enough to strike back at him.

All of my armies have some sort of gimmick to them. Namely I field Lucious in a Noise Marine Army (havent actually tried this since they're still in early stages of painting, but alot of people have told me how stupid an idea this is apparently).
I've also fielded a lone carnifex in 3rd ed with crushing claws. Not exactly my smartest move....
And a mono-khorne Daemon Army (deepstriked right in front of a necron gunline....doh).

Nobody said Berzerkers were a bad choice...
As for Noise Marines, they'd be a good unit if they cost less or got sonic blasters as standard. Right now, you're paying 5pts for a fearless Chaos Marine with 1 extra point of initiative. 10 CSMs with the MoS gives you 10 marines with I5 for 30pts less than 10 Noise Marines, who then have to spend yet more points to buy unit specific weaponry.
Ol' Gav must've been trippin' when he wrote the CSM codex. Never before have I seen a recent codex (when it was released) that managed to have such a mix of good units and terrible units.
Crazed Dreadnoughts, crappy possessed and overcosted Noise Marines alongside Plague Marines, Obliterators and Berzerkers... It's utterly mind-boggling.

I really like striking scorpions and the incubi. I also like the background between karrandras and arhra. I just wish there was more of it.
Back with the old DE codex I had 2 dracons with tormentor and punisher, with a unit of incubi each while my troops were lead by syb (forgotten the name of the warrior leader :( ) with the same.
If Drazhar made incubi troops in the current codex I'd almost certainly do that.
I'm holding out hope for Karrandras making scorpions troops and I'll start Eldar back up. They're still in my 3rd edition box that hasn't been opened since I took the rulebook out and started my DE.

You know, they actually have their uses. I was in a tourney and had a squad of Veterans running to an uncontested objective. They hid behind an immobilized, weapon destroyed Rhino. The dread decided to Fire Frenzy and promptly blew up the rhino, killing one of my guys, causing me to fail the LD check, and have them run off the board (below half strength). Would've been a win for me.

As a side note, when I said I chose plascan sentinels because I like them, I am not saying they're weak.
They're very effective, in fact, especially combined with an army that has lots of other high strength, low AP blast weapons. Which Guard can easily do.

I did read the whole thread? You were the one that stated people were saying Noise Marines were rubbish, I was simply explaining why that is. Please do not make me out to be the bad guy by ignoring the reasons for why I made my post.
You read the whole thread, yet (and this way my point) you can't seem to stay on topic.

regarding storm troopers: No they're not bad, they're just not the hardest thing out there and are not IG's "go to unit"

Guys, the thread is about units you put in your army regardless of their combat effectiveness.
If you want to stay on topic, you need to ignore and avoid discussion of why a unit is or isn't effective in combat.

I point blank refuse to leave my traitor guard's barracks without 5 Ogryns. If only to make silly noises when they die horribly.
Yes I'm a five year old inside.

I like having flavourful characters in a list, someone you can't get through a battle without, regardless of how well they fit your list

I must agree. I built my marine captain first so that I was happy with the way he looked and after that checked the points. I never battle without him.

I like Rough Riders. And Marbo. Hell, any of my conversions I like will definitely be featured in my army.

Stormraven Gunship. Two if I can. Need to hum the Ride of the Valkyries as I "swoosh" towards the midfield and deploy the chainsword-nutters.
I know it's getting lots of malice, but I think the Stormraven is easily the best GW-model of the last 5 years or so. Gothic Eye-liner Space Elves aint for me.

Another one that drives the math hammer nerds crazy is Pask in a vanquisher.
"but its not cost effective!!!111" shut it douchy mcnitpick, when I silence a demolisher on turn one, its cost effective in my eyes

For my Guard;
Sentinels (love the concept, love converting these things, they aren't horrible in game either)
Rough riders (look super cool, sometimes useful)
Ogryns (Mostly just get shot up, but love putting them on the field)
Penal Legion (field them as cowboys, unpredictable but tons of fun)
Storm Troopers (because ... awesome)
LR Punisher (can't get enough of that gattling cannon)
For orks: Pretty much the entire army but mostly;
Looted vehicles
Bikes
For SW;
Blood Claws
Also, in chaos, I often field spawn, useless, useless, spawn.

I always take my Chaplain on bike and Librarian with jump pack in my army. The chaplain was a birthday gift so maybe I'm sentimental in always using it, usually with a bike squadron. And the Librarian is an old lexicanium model and was the first character model I bought for my army so again I probably just keep using it for sentimental reasons, usually paired with an assault marine squad. Regardless of sentimentality I just enjoy the models even if the chaplain sometimes falls over half way through a game.

I also include stormravens. I like making silly noises when moving them and leaping squads out of it

Oblits; Tossed aside as overpriced Devastators by everyone I play against, only to get fething stomped by Plasma cannons, plasma cannons everywhere.
Hellions; Extremely squishy and overlooked by most I play against, but poison shooting and S4 attacks do something.
