I am currently working on my Ultramarines, and will be starting on the Second company once I have all of my other models finished. I thought I would just set up this blog to keep myself motivated for finishing off all of my unpainted models. C&C welcome throughout (bear in mind some of my models were painted a while ago ) Will post pics of Tau soon, would like to know what you would like to see painted next.

Just a quick update while I'm at work of a few finished Kroot, more Ultramatine and Tau pics soon.

Solid painting. I personally paint my space marines like you; in pristine condition. Though other people really like the "dirtied up" look. I also like the purple on the kroot. How'd you do it?

Just sprayed them with a white basecoat and then added a leviathan purple wash, gave it a nice colour with minmum effort

Thats what I like to see. Simple technique, good results.

Had a bit of free time this morning so started work on my apothecary. Only rough of course, still plenty to do.

Same for me i like to think my 2nd Ultramarine company have just hit planet side and still have the oil scents from the polish they use to clean there armour

The white on the apothecary looks chalky, especially on his head. I don't paint much white, but two techniques that people throw around are thinning and thin layers. Add a little water to the white paint to thin it down so it goes on smoother. Or try painting a lot of really light coats of white on, and slowly build them up. Try looking for tutorials on painting white.

Yer I did think that after looking at it, seems to be more of a pain getting a nice white on old metal models.

Your best bet for the the white is to come up from a grey base-coat. Something like fortress grey has enough opacity to provide a solid base without actually bleeding through the white afterwards. And like PraetorDave says thinning the paints is important when it comes to white.

I like clean minis and I like minis with well done battle damage, so I'm easy to please. You marines look very good and you have Marneus Calgar and Honour Guard. I love those models. I myself don't own them but I've wanted them since I've layed eyes on 'em. Most excited to see you paint those.

Really like the Kroot too. Different and very refreshing and so simple too. Who woulda thunk it.

Going to be starting Calgar next after the command squad, always put off doing him. Still have the 2nd Edition one primed and ready to go...

Also started work on my 2nd company (exactly as in the codex pic) which I think I'll post in here aswell once I have the majority of 1 squad done.

Hopefully get some more pics up tommorow/this weekend of the firewarriors and apothecary.

Love your kroot colours, I went with green, but I may just revise that!

I like the purple Kroot, not sure how i feel about the red and green quils though. It distracts me, maybe pick either the red or green and do different subtle shades? Minor nitpick all the same.

White is a bugger, when i first did it on my Dreadnought, it went on way to thick. I am really disapointed with it looking back now. And the bigest tip i can say (and reiterate what others have said) is thin the paint. 1 drop of water to 1 drop of paint, i have read that it should be the consistency of milk. I changed my planed colour scheme due to not liking how the white looked, that and how sexy i think bleached bone is lol (maybe its just because its a newer pot of paint)

The Kroot look great, i love the look of the wash over the white prime. And i agree with FearPeteySodes to keep one colour of quills.

Finished off my standard bearer last night, just have the freehand banner to do then he's done.

Wow man the golds look great! Might I suggest hitting the boltgun with Badab Black wash? It really shows it's depth and makes it alot more realistic, apart from that though, he looks great! I love the look of the old models, especially those sergeants you can get from the GW website.

Yer found an old command squad in the loft so got it down stripped it and hence now I'm working on them. I agree though that the old sergeants are awesome. I did my gold with shinning gold base, gryphon sepia wash, drybrush bleached bone and then a thin layer of devlan mud. Will hit the boltgun tonight when I get home, I did use a little devlan mud but the black probably makes more sense, cheers.

Just another quick update of what's been going on, standard bearer is finished, not too happy about the banner but have so much stuff to do I'm moving on. Also started work on the techmarine this morning, more to follow.

I don't see why you're unhappy, that Ultramarine logo is fantastically freehanded! I can always do it nicely when it's small, but when I have to freehand it large, its a little mesesy, your excecution is very well done, dont be ashamed.

Also a little tip, if you want banners to look more realistic, try to avoid black outlines, I used black outlines on my first few and without them they sort of just...work better? it's hard to explain but you'll understand when you see.

Been very busy with work this week but managed to get a few more veterans finished, hope you like them.

The techmarine looks beautifully clean and smooth.
The Captin looks good as well, but the lighting is a bit dark so harder to make out the colours and detail
I like the use of the DA models for the veterans, a cool idea.

Can I get a close up on those shoulderpads? Are they freehand?

Well I freehanded the ultramarine logo around the existing sword that's there, will take some pics when I get home tonight.

The Freehand Ultramarine symbol round the Sword on the shoulder pads is very nicely done. Although seeing the picture so big (through the link) does sadly show up mould lines :(

I know, these were really just a tester for my next batch and wanted to get them done before xmas as I have a big backlog to work through, but thanks for the feedback

Looking good Rich, I love the idea of DA vets for Ultras, MAC did some a couple of years ago that looked just as good. I think they could do with a touch more contrast in the robes but nothing to drastic. The Kroot look great too, I'm thinking of stealing you method and using it for the AoBR orks that I have to paint up (may need to drop you a pm if i run into unforeseen problems). All in all great stuff, looking forward to more.

Lovely light pictures

The effect on the captins power sword looks cool, sort of mottled. Would it be possible to get a clearer close up. Sorry for asking for more pictures lol, i hope you dont mind. Tell me to go away if need be

And again your kroot look amazing, i love the great effect from a simple wash over white.

Thanks again for the feedback, have included a pic of the sword a bit closer, just a quick layer or black with some catachan green straight on top while its wet, about 3/4 of the way up, quickly wrap cling film around it and then remove for a kind of marbled effect and finally scorpion green highlight and azureman blue wash. Also included a w.I.p on my custom Sicarius.

In regards to the final version above, his ... you know i never know quite what to call it, but the red flappy stappy bits acting as a loin cloth dress ... look a little flat. It could just be the photo though. I hate painting them, for some reason the highlighting never comes out right.

I've come to check out your blog! Love the smerfs man really good paint job! I like the converted sicurs yet, mu only critsium would be to have mark IV armour parts (I believe or mark V) around the leg/torso area. The termines are looking good! I can’t wait for clager to be finished too! The use of DA vets is suburb I'm thinking of using that idea too! Love your stuff, hey how about you check out my blog too? Thanks man! For the wash I'd use either delvan mud or organ flesh? (Tbh I would bother washing white because it can go quite messy).If your just wanting to do the resses do babbad black in the ressesses then go over the white again. Hope this helps!

How about, put some sand, put some bigger sand, put 1-2 plastic pieces laying in bit box. Wash with watered down chaos black + dry brush gray. Add foliage?

Great idea, was going to do sand mixed with small slate peices and then washed with black and drybrushed grey. Will do a tester base at some point this week.

Yep he is, I find I prefer using them over finecast as they are more weighty and feel more important

Sorry It's been such a while since I've posted tbh, I haven't been doing much painting but I thought I'd update you with my first 2 fully finished honour guard.

Nice painting, but i would do a wash on the metal.

They have a badab black wash on the guns and axes and devlan mud on the gold armor. Just doesn't show great in the pics.

Love the armour man! But a bule wash could work!

Pics didn't come out great but I used an azuremen blue wash and then highlighted with more Ultramarine blue. Will try to get some better pics when we get some sun

Sorry for the late post but just had a few finishing touches to make, so here's the last honour guard now, next up is Calgar himself.

Just a quick update before I go on holiday for a few days really, started work on calgar and decided to work my way up, think it might be a bit easier that way. Haven't had much time to do anything else as I'm currently playing Batman Arkham city at the mo and am a bit hooked more to come when I ger back at the end of the week.

Hmmm....Look good man! Can't wait to see em finished! Btw if you look inf the codex it has the 2nd company laid out with markings and everything and looks amazing!!! On the assult squads one squad has two yellow stripes on their chainswords with the other hving three stripes, how about using that too to help define the squads, hoope this helps..

Hey HAZZER, thanks for the feedback. I am actually doing the squad from the picture in the codex. You can't see the stripes on the chainswords but they have 2 red lines like in the codex (top left). And as for the markings I'm freehanding them all so will take some extra pics this weekend. Also gonna start 2 new blogs for my Inceptor space marines and Chaos Space Wolves.
