Thanks to Brother Loki on Warseer for bringing this to my attention. Here his post:
Hi all
Last weekend at UK Games Expo I came across the launch of a new oriental fantasy skirmish game called Bushido, which was being launched at the event. It's from a new British company called GCT Studios. I was really impressed with some of the models, so I picked up a couple of starters - there are currently 4 faction starters containing the rules, stat cards, dice and 5-6 minis each. They're quite similar to the starters for Infinity or Warmachine.
The factions are:
The Temple of Ro-Kan - Shaolin-style kung-fu monks, led by an ancient master riding a turtle.
The Savage Wave - Creatures from Asian myth, like Bakemono (goblins) and Oni (ogre/demons)
The Prefecture of Ryu - Fairly standard samurai and Ashigaru
The Cult of Yurei - Necromancers, undead Geisha and zombies animated by porcelain masks.
I haven't played it yet, but the quickstart rules seem fairly straightforward and the models are gorgeous and very evocative, although a couple of them were tricky to assemble due to quite small points of contact with arms to shoulders etc. There's some quite neat and innovative mechanics to do with dice pools in attack and defence for combat, and each model has a stat card with its own abilities - much like Warmachine.
I picked up the Temple of Ro-Kan and Cult of Yurei starters, based purely on them having the most unusual models. Once I've got them painted I'll play a game or two and report back. In the meantime you can see pics of the models and download the quickstart rules at:

Looks interesting, when I have more time I will have to check out the quick start rules. I wonder how much each starter will cost?
I am drawn more toward skirmish games now more than ever and this one looks pretty cool.

At $45 per starter set it would cost $90 to get a 2 person game going. Seems steep, but if the full rules are included in that price then I'll end up playing it with my wife.
As someone already stated, this is money that GW could have earned from me, but they haven't and now I'm looking into branching out to other companies and will likely discontinue my GW purchases and simply play warhammer with what I already own.

If they scale correctly, these would be awesome for Malifaux "counts as" proxies in a Kirai crew...
Otherwise, dont play the game with them and simply paint them for enjoyment and display purposes.

This game looks AWESOME!
The models look great, especially the Cult of Yurai faction. I'm seeing a lot of Rackham Confrontation influence...I'm mean ashigaru goblins?! Don't get me wrong, I think it's great considering nobody has touched that IP. Even the game mechanics seem similar, like the comabt system:
There's some quite neat and innovative mechanics to do with dice pools in attack and defence for combat, and each model has a stat card with its own abilities

I'm a biiig fan of the Savage Wave and the Cult. The Temple looks like it could be interesting, but I'd like to get some unpainted shots, and that part of their website is down. The Prefecture is honestly just kinda visually uninteresting, despite being decent models.

I agree with some of them, but some are okay.
More worrying to me about the Kung Fu girl is not just face. I could deal with the panty flash on its own. But it appears that she also has nipple tips moulded into her outfit. The combination just really looks a bit classless and out of place compared to the rest of her faction. In fact, I'm having trouble with her clothes in general. I'm no expert, but I don't recognize her outfit and I'm not convinced it ever existed. Which bothers me because they otherwise appear to have done their homework pretty well. I would hope the sculptor didn't just invent an anachronistic outfit just to have an excuse for fan-service. I'd rather they just put her in some pants or if they must go the titillation route, a qípáo.
It's an unfortunate blemish on an otherwise solid line.

The CCG released in 1995, hasn't stopped, it had a brief pause, where for a sec it seemed it was going to fold, but bang, kept on going. So Lot5r has pretty much been solid since its release, coming up to 16yrs ago. The Miniature game Clan War not so much, but the RPG still releases something now and again. Lot5r RPG has got to 4th edition.
To be honest had a small company contacted Alderac and set up a Skirmish game using Lot5r as a basis, I'd be all over it. The number of characters and storylines the CCG has followed over the years have been amazing and I love the Clans set up and the Shadowlands as the big bad.
This looks nice, but probably not for me.

Old kung fu grand master on a tortoise FTW!!
If nothing else, I will at least get that one mini. Maybe give it a tied-died hippy paint job.
Also, I hope this doesn't start a big debate but...
...It's a tortoise not a turtle.
Turtles live mostly in water and have webbed feet or fins. Tortoises have "normal" feet without webbing and often have claws for digging.
Turtles have flat shells for better hydrodynamics. Tortoises have domed shells for added protection from things falling on them and supporting the weight of kung fu grand masters.

Yes, very nice! I showed this thread to the wife when it first posted and even She-Who-Does-Not-Wargame gave it consideration, if for nothing other than the models.
The price tag is a little high for our budget, especially given the shipping to get it from the UK, but if a US distributor picks it up I'll be on it like white on rice. (rimshot, please)

Any news on when they will start selling individual miniatures?
Not so thrilled by their generic samurai but I will probably buy:
- Peasants of the Ro-Kan
- Kairai
- Kato Kubiashi, the Puppet Master
- Ninja
- Kitsune
- Nezumi
- Rat swarms
- ...
- and many other "not silly looking" miniatures (I'm no fan of comic relief-miniatures and want my monsters looking evil).
BTW:
I highly recommend buying Clan War minis from

I can see the appeal, especially if you just want the one model for another system, but they come out to around $7-10 a miniature which is very comparable to, say Reaper's pricing scheme. I imagine the resell market for breaking the group packs would be pretty decent as a result, ala Heroscape.

1.) L5R had acceptable sculpted minis but not as nice as these.
2.) Oni, Ghosts and Katsune never played a major role in that game, so Bushido is using Japanese folklore as inspiration, not L5R IP.
3.) Everybody is allowed to have his opinion and post them within forum rules that include politeness.
4.) Seeing that you seem to work for Infinity or at least advertise that game in your signature, I can understand why you attack other skirmish games that way.
BTW the Ninja Boardgame has been presented and sold on GenCon, now waiting for a major release.

Seeing as Legend of the 5 Rings is pretty much out of print...
It's an Oriental game with ninja's demons, zombies, and the like. I'm not seeing the reason for the over the top spastic comments, You don't like it- thats noted, so move on and continue.
I'd like to see more of this stuff before i commit, though- Based on my own personal experience with L5R. I picked it up right before it went south, so I was left holding the bag with a boxed set that I couldn't continue to support. I noticed that someone else took it over, but at the time, it was pretty much done.
There was another game of similer makeup to this one that seems to have disappeared, even before it continued to move forward- Does this game have anything to do with that one called "OKKO"?
http://www.okko-thegame.com/
I could see some interchangeability in this train of thought- L5R minis included with this game, with some sort of additional addentums.
I agree with the one other guy's sentiment that there are not enough "Oriental Adventures" miniatures lines, so to me as well, any are a good thing.
Would like to see more, because butterface or not, I'm realliy digging the miniatures so far, though I agree that that dress on the chick looks kinda crazy...
I'd like to see more Chun- Lee (Streetfighter) or House of Flying Daggers influenced. The one so far just looks like a train wreck.

CLAN WAR
As I person who was sponsored by AEG Clan War (L5R) when the game was in print I just want to say that the Bushido line looks *very* promising - and in no way inferior to the Clan War range (of which I have owned every single mini...). Sure there is Clan War sculpts that are better than these - but some parts of the Clan War range were actually rather poor.
Any wargamer interested in Fantasy-ish Japan ought to support Valiant Miniatures and buy a few (of the better) Clan War miniatures at:
http://www.veltd.net/28mmclanwar.htm
BUSHIDO
Yes, some of the Bushido miniatures could have been sculpted better (mostly the Ryu faction, probably due to goofy art work) - but most look really good.
I, personally, have a problem with their "comic relief" monsters - but I cannot argue the quality of sculpting.
I fully intend to support this line by buying lots of minis (as soon as they start selling singles.
Finally I would like to promote two things:
1. Upcoming plastic 28 mm samurai range from Wargames Factory.
Could be great or suffer from their "Strange Pose Syndrome" due to being computer designed instead of greenstuffed.
