Mezzo Forte is the last surprisingly good anime I watched. The original movie is NSFW; the rest of the series just contains an inordinate amount of blood.
I also enjoy Akira, FLCL, Appleseed Ex Machina, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop, Afro Samurai (Yes, I consider this to be an anime), and Outlaw Star.
My girlfriend just recently convinced me to sit through most of Trigun with her. Though it's decent, it's kind of hard to enjoy a show when you dislike the main character.
Haven't really seen any series, as there are few channels that show anime over here in the UK. Saw some of Cowboy Beebop, which was quite fun if a little Batgak insane.
Anime I have seen
Akira
Dominion Tank Police
Most of the Ghibli films
Urotsikidoji
Guy Awakening of the Devil
Blood the Last vampire
Fist of the Northstar
Ghost in the Shell
Most of the Pokemon films
Patlabor
Ninja Scroll
Probably some I am missing there.
Faves are..
Spirited Away
The Cat Returns
Guy Awakening of the Devil (Just for the moment his sidekick pulls the rocket launcher out from under her skirt)
Ghost in the Shell
My favorite anime was Strike Witches, but I've seen some other good ones including: Soul Eater, Highschool of the Dead, Bleach, Desert Punk, Ouran Host Club, and Darker then Black.
I watched Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto (which was good untill Sasuke became evil and the show turned into poop imo), closed case(something like that, it was called Detective Conan in Argentina) Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragonball GT, One piece and trigun (which I still have to finish)
Fullmetal alchemist was the best anime I have ever watched so far. Dragonball GT and Trigun are tied for second
Faovrites:
Black Lagoon (by far)
Area 88 (Trance + Intense dog fights = Indescribably awesome)
Ghost in the Shell (movie and series)
GAUREN LAGGAN!!
FLCL
Others:
Elfen Lied (I may have shed a tear at the end... WHAT ABOUT IT?!)
D-Gray Man (it's kinda good, entertaining.)
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Dragon Ball Z (of course)
Outlaw Star
Evangellion
And last but not least, especially since it was the first anime I ever saw: Iria!
Epic list:
Girls bravo
Lucky star
Fate stay night
Elfen lied
K-on
Flcl
Rozen maiden
Clannad
Darker than black
Gundam wing
.hack//sign
Please teacher
Eden of the east
Good:
Birdy the mighty
Corpse princess
Genshiken
Spice and wolf
Ergo proxy
Hetalia
Solty rei
I don't like:
Naruto
Bleach
One piece
Any dragonball
Gunslinger girl
Sailor moon
Cardcaptor sakura
Chobits
I hate queens blade, huge boobs on all the girls, kind of offensive. I hate inuyasha, that whole teenage girl meets non-human dreamboy girly anime scenario does not entertain me.
I remember pokemon being big in russia when ruby/sapphire/emerald was released. The anime had many cute pokemon, but I hate that they all turned ugly when they evolve.
I can't wait for the touhou project to release an anime, I'm a big fan of all the games.
Some of my favorites. The ones that most stick in my memory.
Desert Punk
Bubblegum Crisis ( and the 2 followup series made in the 90s ).
Ghost in the shell: Standalone complex
Cowboy bebop
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Dominion: Tank police ( I nearly forgot that. need to rewatch it.)
I never really liked FMA, Bleach, Dragonball Z or Naruto. There's a lot of weak animes out there. Either that or I'm just fussy.
Cyporiean wrote:johnscott10, how do you feel about something like the original 'Oh! My Goddess' OVA? 3 Episodes, has a story.
Recommendation wise, just finished watching Baccano! on Netflix, was quiet good.
Even though my original post was a bit vague into what counts as an anime, so even Ova, despite being 3 eps long, could actually be classed as an anime.
Since it is based on a Manga then it counts as an anime to me, since the story isnt going to be over in 10-15 mins lol.
AvatarForm wrote:You may wish to re-consider your beliefs and stop incorrectly categorising cartoons as anime and vice-versa
I wont admit to saying I have accused an Amine as being a cartoon or a cartoon as an Anime because currently I havnt, and as i said in an earlier post the original concept of what I view as a cartoon/anime was vague, theres alot more to it than how long a story lasts such as origin, art style and other things.
I dont want this thread to turn into an "OMG! The op thinks (insert cartoon name here) is an anime! What an idiot", I normally can tell the difference between an anime and a cartoon.
johnscott10 wrote:First of let me clear up what my view of an Anime is, as wel all know some people confuse Anime with Cartoons.
A few people think its based on origin, anime from Japan and cartoons from western contries, this is not the view I follow.
The view I follow is if the story lasts for more than 5 episodes its classed as an anime, anything shorter or has no story is a cartoon.
So Family Guy, The Simpsons, Tom and Jerry in that aspect are all cartoons to me.
Bleach, Naruto, Ghost in the Shell are all animes.

Your OP contradicts itself, then you continue to contradict yourself in this last post.
The length of a series does not define it in either category. Origin is the defining character. It is defined in the meaning of the term Anime.

Actually I dont contradict myself at all, as I never disregard the fact that the origin determines whats an anime and what isnt, I just say that its not my initial view.
If you can find anywhere that says I disregard origin then ill admit im wrong.
Also I dont see how my first post contradicts itself.
I'm old enough to remember the advent of anime in the UK as the rebirth of the "video nasty" scare that was caused by the tendency of the first companies to import the stuff to focus more on the "lager and curry" end of the market. That resulted in the image that most people had of anime (or daftly "manga" as most people seemed to call it back then due to the prominence of the "Manga Video" company) was of crazy violence, sexism and masochism intended for the emotionally slowed!
There was some real crap marketed in those days, but the saving grace was that a small core of decent (and in some cases groundbreaking) titles made it through to prove that there was quality out there as well such as Akira, Domnion Tank Police and Appleseed.
The advent of the popularity of series such as Deathnote, Naruto and One Piece as a result always seem somewhat odd to me as I was blooded in the age of so much harder stuff being en vogue.
I'd hope that the younger generation have taken the time to see titles such as Akira, the original Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor as they really do have to be seen to be believed.
Personally I also really enjoy comming across more low-key series such as Planetes and Otogi Zoshi.
Studio Ghibli is so good that it really has to be part of the stuff that's seen by anyone regardless of their being a fan of anime or not.
And don't, please don't make the mistake of missing out on the work of Satoshi Kon; Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika are some of the best animated films ever made...the death of Satoshi Kon makes them all the more precious.
sillyboy wrote:Well personally ,i tought "Black lagoon" was very good.
Too bad that i'm still waiting on the next episode to come out. You can watch them on Youtube if you want. ( I watched the series there)
YES!!! I've watched the entire series 4 times now.
What do you mean "waiting on the next episode to come out"? Are they still doing the Roberta side series? I haven't seen that one yet.
But the all time best line from that show was when Rock and Revi go to Japan so Hotel Moscow can establish a foothold in Tokyo. The sleezeball guy (with blonde hair and white suit) was chasing Yukio and Rock runs in behind him smashes a vase over his head and yells "feth YOU!!" I laughed so hard I nearly cried.
R.O.D is really good especially the film its got real charm and imagination.
Vampire Hunter D is cool the original's a bit dated now but the new one Bloodlust i think its called is cool and brilliantlly animated.
Cowboy bebop is superb the film especially.
Spriggan is a great adventure.
Black Lagoon as several have said already is really cool, loads of action and most have a few good laughs in as well.
Hellsing.
Patlabor 1 and 2, in my view two of the best films out there,
Ghost in the shell obviously, though i personally i'd get the original film over the 2.0 redux version i didn't think all the extra CGI worked too well.
Just my personal taste but i'd avoid Noir, Madlax and Gantz they didn't doo much for me.
Favorites:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
FLCL
Diebuster (Gunbuster 2. I enjoy Gainax, I guess.)
Evangelion, on the rare occasion I feel angsty anymore. The new Rebuild of EVA movies are AWESOME though.
Black Lagoon
Hellsing
Outlaw Star
Z Gundam (only saw the movies but they were pretty awesome)
Macross 0
Other Likes:
Turn A Gundam
00 Gundam
Macross/Robotech (Plus was also good. Currently working through 7 and liking everything except the main character, who is a walking sphincterspigot)
Ranma 1/2
Full Metal Panic
Ghost in the Shell (the manga was a lot better)
Martian Successor Nadesico
Nostalgia Lane:
Slayers
Tenchi Muyo
DBZ
Naruto/Bleach to a lesser extent, but I eventually quit watching them.
Very memorable, but rather conflicted about:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
School Days (Seriously fethed up)
Strike Witches
And not that anyone asked, but my favorite manga as well:
Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm)
Nausicaa
Ghost in the Shell
I like the strong female leads I guess.
I know I'm forgetting tons, and didn't list the many rather forgettable series I never finished. Probably pop back up with more later on.
I won't list them all, only the ones worth mentioning
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Code Geass
Full Metal Panic
Seitokai Yakuindomo
Toaru majutsu no index
Shakugan no Shana
Asura Cryin
Rental magicka
Clannad
Lucky Star
I've seen most of everything hosted on Toonami following the era TOM 1 was its host. Everything excluding the stuff hosted during Giant Robot Week, and everything else that looked like it was trying to advocate sales for a children's card game or toy-line (ex: DICE). After September 2008 rolled around I've never had the motivation to use the internet to watch anime, not until I finally forced myself to watch that Hetalia thing, and hoo-boy was that ever a train wreck. But I still have a television to keep with my tradition of watching shows on television to view anime On Demend whenever I'm not feeling like watching some of History or Discovery (mostly when they have those below par reality shows), or watching Adult Swim On Demand.
I'd mention my favorites but I'm afraid of doing so as my lunch table keep pointing at me for being tasteless. Although that maybe more brought up because I'm the only one there who hasn't watched Hellsing.

That's when you do what I did and say "I like these particular ones. It's all nostalgia though, totally. Toootally."
Tom 1 was awesome though. Tom 2 was just trying way too hard.
I recently watched Kore wa Zombie desu ka
No other male character fights in a magical girl outfit ( with a slight blush :3 )
as well as walking down the road with x ray glasses while quoting Shakespeare.
Zefig wrote:Oh, a friend of mine had been telling me about Kore wa Zombie desu ka. It sounded interesting at least. Silly I can deal with most of the time.
But is it all good?
Depends i guess, many people dont like how often the main char gets abused by sera ( girl in red ) it makes them angry enough to stop watching.
but if you find sera and main char to be a funny couple , then you'll enjoy it alot ( i do )

Sounds interesting may have to look for it.

Hmm makes me want to go look for it more haha.
Well I can now add Death Note to the list of animes I have watched fully.
Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z
Hellsing
Bobobo Bo Bo BoBo (greatest anime of all time. wanna fight about it?)
Naruto
Outlaw Star
Yu Yu Hakusho
Rurouni Kenshin
basically all the Gundams they had on Toonami
Death Note (hated it. Only watched it with a friend who loved it)
Akira
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Ok, so I've been seeing from reviews that Gundam Seed is pretty damn good. In fact I hear that it's one of the best Gundam sagas. Is it worth looking into?
DickBandit wrote:Ok, so I've been seeing from reviews that Gundam Seed is pretty damn good. In fact I hear that it's one of the best Gundam sagas. Is it worth looking into?
This is the only Gundam i have watched , and i enjoyed it . I think what drew me into it, was watching these impossibly large mechas side by side to what we perceive as normal day to day buildings.
it was like " wow will one day in the future be like that "
Most of the series and movies I've seen that where halfway decent have already been mentioned. And really, I don't watch Anime nearly as much as I used too, so most of my recommendations are going to be at least 5-10 years old (which, I might add, seems to be a running theme in this thread ).
That being said, here are a few that I really liked that I either haven't seen mentioned yet or wish to reiterate:
Martian Successor Nadesco
Escaflowne
Patlabor TV Series (cool mecha action, great characters)
Eureka 7 (Shares a lot of themes with Evangelion, but does it better IMO)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (have yet to see the new movies, unfortunately)
Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato (iconic Japanese space opera!)
Bubblegum Crisis/Bubblegum Crisis 2040 (one is a 80's classic, the other a swank 90's follow-on that I actually liked better)
Crest of the Stars / Banner of the Stars (more of a "hard" science fiction show)
And finally, anything from Studio Ghibli. I have yet to see one of their films that I did not like.
Also, I've got fuller reviews for some of these and others on my website, although I rarely update it anymore:
Not read the thread, but the anime I watched most recently was a bunch of Evangelion stuff in a marathon:
The original 26 Episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion
End of Evangelion
Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
As you can imagine, I'm now a peaceful well adjusted individual, just like Shinji.
I have watched at some point, and read nearly all of these in manga:
Chu Bra Naruto
Naruto Shippuden
Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball Z
Death Note (the manga was better)
Howl's Moving Castle, Porco Rosso, Spirited Away and many other Studio Gibili films
On a similar note my faviorate Manga/Manhua was either:
1/2 Prince or
1/2 Dragon
Haven't watched any anime for years but when it first became more readily available back in the early 90's on the Manga video label I was quite into it. Some of it was right dross but stuff I still own (on VHS) and really like: Fist of the North Star, Battle Angel Alita, Tank Police, Riding Bean, Ninja Scroll, Lensman to name a few. Also does anybody remember a 'cartoon' series that was on tv back in the 80's called Battle of the Planets? Was this early anime?

They don't make them like that anymore, that's for sure.
I mean, have you seen the anime scene lately? I love anime, but I don't want miku hatsune trying to sell toyota cars.

Yeah, good stuff. I'm disappointed they never did more with the Battle Angel Alita anime. The manga is one of my all time favorites. And now I hear James Cameron wants to make a live-action/CG movie about it. Not sure how I feel about that.
I did watch some Battle of the Planets, when it was on cartoon network in the...late 90s maybe? Not sure what they were calling it at that point, seems to have gone by Battle of the Planets, G-Force, and Gatchaman as the original.
Sometimes I like watching an anime in Japanese just to see how many words I guess don't have translations for them so the Japanese add an extra "ah" or "uh" sound at the end.

I think a Battle Angel Alita film would be cool, especially if Cameron does it as that means it should get a suitably large budget and a decent cast. So much anime that has made the transmission from animation to live action has been a let down - Guyver (made as Mutronics then Guyver - Dark Hero) - nasty rubber monsters that should be in a kids Power Rangers film - don't even get me started on Fist of the North Star!
Monkeyh, I agree with you from the standpoint that a large budget and good cast would do wonders for it. However, I fear it'd end up like the rumors for Akira are going...in that it gets so distorted from the original that it's hardly recognizable. It doesn't help that from what I've heard, the only part of Battle Angel Alita/Gunnm that Cameron's actually read was the parts about Motorball. We'll see though, and I'll try to remain optimistic despite my concerns.
johnscott10 wrote:Bleach(Only just started though)
Meh, In my humble opinion, Bleach was only really good in the first two seasons, right around the Bounto it started to fall off, really fast. I don't know, I just prefered it when they were swordsmen swinging swords that toppled buildings over when they started flying around like maniacs/Dragon Ball Z....
I have watched Trigun and Full Metal Alchemist, those two being my favorite, along with the entirety of Bleach, Naruto, Hellsing, and back when I had this wolf crazy girlfriend, Wolf's Rain.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Battle Brother Lucifer wrote:Bobobo Bo Bo BoBo (greatest anime of all time. wanna fight about it?)
Yup, because you can't get better than Trigun or Full Metal Alchemist.
Currently watching
1. Naruto Shippuden
2. Bleach
3. Hellsing
4. Eureka Seven
5. Fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood
Working my way through this list.
FMA is not that great. It begins with promise but the ending is confusing and disappointing.

But is it all good?
What is this one known as in English?
Its the same name, i watched the 1st episode of it.
