Hey guys, I'm totally new here and totally new to wargaming though i have been interested in it for 11 years. I remember when i read my first White Dwarf at luch break at primary school. I was obsessed with Eldar from that point on! I tried to get into gaming but couldn't find any local groups. Unfortunatly it has been this was for the past 11 years and I'm tired of it!
That being said, I am looking for some local guys to perhaps meet up with and have a friendly game (bearing in mind im a noob to wargaming). From there I am looking to set up a local group at a nearby hall (currently looking at The Forum in Greenwich or the scout hall at Swallowfield Road, charlton).
Either way, I am looking for some locals that might be interested in helping set that up or that would be looking to attend if/when we get it up and running.
I know there is a thread from 2009 saying that a few of you meet up at the Gypse Moth for drinks and friendly chat. If you are one of those guys, or just live locally, drop me a comment or click the poll so I know roughly how many would be interested!
Thanks!

SELWG is quite close to Greenwich.
South London Warlords are not too far either.
I like the idea of a nice little local setup but I live the other side of London so Greenwich is out of my range.

This is great.
I'm so tired of the Games Workshop locals with "no fun allowed" traditions.
I knew some clubs in central London including games played at Darksphere and others such as the Cross Gaming Club, but three problems occur:
- Usually Fees to play (par darksphere, but you can't find the players)
- Many have dropped 40k, and I can understand why. But it's great when you play for fluff and not for comp.
- London train fairs (unless you live there)
Greenwich is perfect for me (sidcup) and I would love to be a part of this. Though the weekends won't be the best time.
Reply with the details as soon as possible, available also asap.

Hey, good to hear from you guys! I don't have any details as of yet. I have 3 venues in mind:
Sunfield Church Hall - Blackheath Royal standard.
 Scout hall at Swallowfield Road.
 The Forum at greenwich.
Tomorrow I will check out the first at last places and get back to you here.
I think it's best to start with just 40k and get the player base going. The real hurdle, like you said, will be getting the player base to cover the rent fees. But like I say I will look into it tomorrow.
I was looking at perhaps Wed/Thurs evenings. How does that sound?

Thursday is potentially "do-able" - I wouldn't be able to come all the time but would be up for any tournament / apoc and ad-hoc weekdays.

Awesome. I have emailed the church and will phone The Foum tomorrow.
I have no idea about the last venue. Maybe i'll contact Greenwich Council tomorrow and see whats up.

Post by: Blackgaze
Both days are great and suitable.
Remember the venue needs a good place to store scenery, as it's going to be annoying to bring it every week.
Maybe in the future we could actually have the right scenery for 40k specialist games. I've been meaning for some Gorkamorka and Mordheim games for ages

Quick update for you guys.
I just spoke to The Forum- Greenwich. A 25 man room (smallest) is available on Wed/Thurs but = £30 per hour and a month would need to be paid in advance. X_X

Try a pub function room. They will often let you have a room for free on the basis you will be drinking.

That's true. I know I have the space to store a few tabletops - 10x 14' shed ftw!
But I don't have the space to actually play. I'll ask about in town around the Royal Naval college/Greenwich Uni

Hi, i live on isle of dogs and would definitely be interested in coming along, although i only have warmachine/hordes at the moment, planning on 40k but not for a little while as i only just got back into wargaming 2 weeks ago after 12 years and just bought my armies.
I could potentially hold some games at my place as well but i have no table or scenery or anything like that just the space.

If you're at Greenwich uni, it might be possible to get a uni room on a regular basis - this is what Ketara did at Canterbury to hold the Platinum Devil tournaments.
Didn't the Greenwich Student Union building have rooms upstairs...?
45363
Post by: ForsakenBacon
Okay, sorry I haven't been around as much as I would have liked. Things have been happening rather fast.
So, so far we have Greenwich Uni as a possibilty.
The Forum is out of the question (it is WAY too expensive).
However, my father does the finances for Sunfield Chuch and regularly attends meeting there. They have a large space available and he is going to see if he can get if you us at a knock down price. It shouldn't be too much of a problem as he already uses one of the offices as his own office.
The next meeting is on Tuesday. So ideally before then I need:
a) A rough idea on prices - does anyone know how much these clubs usually charge (i've never been to one). I'll be checking it out myself, but a quick post wouldn't hurt .
b) To know around how many people would come. From what I see we have about 7-8 possible members! So if you are interested and are lurking....STOP! And make yourself known to the Inquisition!
c) To know how long the average game lasts

Post by: ForsakenBacon
Okay, some good news guys, I just visited Sunfield Church and it's looking good. There is a main hall which is £30 per hour.
However, as a starter I say we go for the meeting room which is a decent size, has built in storage AND a mini sink/tea/food area. The best part is...we get all of this for just £15 per hour (and hopefully less after the meeting tomorrow). So currrently, at £15 per hour for say...2 hours thats £30...divided by around 8 people, that's £3.75 per person (my maths is great ). If we add a little more for say, snacks that I could bring along/for the making of game boards etc, we could play for £4-5 per person, per week... How does that sound? SELWG is £5 for non-members as it is.
Remember, those figures may drop after the meeting tomorrow.
I'm going for a board size of 4' x 4' is that a decent size They can obviously be combined for larger battles.
So let me know if you are still interested guys!

Yep. I never expected the club to be free, it's too much effort for that.
The biggest question for me is even if we get the Church, where are we going to get all the terrain from?
Hopefully once things go well we can move on to other games such as Mordheim and Gorkamorka, seems like this is the only chance I can get to playing these

Better start taking notes my good man!
But seriously, I see no reason why we can't make them ourselves. Once we get a club fund going we can start looking at buying things. I have a lot of old board laying around so that could form a base.
Perhaps everyone interested should come along to a meet up day and we can discuss it all and make plans to get terrain moving.
As i said before, I have a massive shed that can be used for temp storage until we can hopefully move it to church storage.

Hah well from reading some of these forums, you could be fooled into thinking that's what 90% of the games out there are! I certainly hope not!
I have a load of the old metal Harlequins, so I don't know, maybe I could get a teeny tiny force of them together, although I probably don't have enough. I've also got a load of chaos stuff from when I collected as a kid.

3 armies current, 4th soon.
Two of the armies I managed to get good deals on models so I wanted to stop at 2. Don't regret it since
1st army: Orks, mix of very old and newly painted models and don't have a specific colour scheme.
2nd army: Imperial Guard. I tend to call the yellow/grey colour scheme "unique" as I've seen no one match it yet. Mixed infantry and tanks
3rd army: Necrons. Up to about 3000points worth. Black/Yellow/White scheme.
4th to come: Tyranids
I don't tend to buy the same unit though unless it's needed. I like variety and using units they don't get use. I play for fluff, never for competitions.
so no 9 killer kans/multipe hydras and 12+ destroyers annoyance
It's a joke.

Hey guys, been talking with Shoggoth about this but it would be a good idea if we could arrange a meet up day to just get to know each other, hang out, and see how many members we are actually looking it. I propose a meet up in greenwich around/on the 4th of next month (August). Everyone else up for this? Thought I might make things a little more interesting by posting a few pics: Here we have the area that we will be using to start...looks cozy enough right? Comes complete with kitchen area. For the first meet up at the club there will be cake (thank my girlfriend). Potential storage place - en suite! The larger hall next door that we can expand into if need be and funds permit. The makings of some terrain - prob hills etc. Hm... seems that didn't work. Here are the links in order: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/109/img0092ac.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/269/img0093aic.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/849/img0094ag.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/191/img0089ama.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/534/img0100ax.jpg/ I'm gunna work at setting up a facebook group soon. I was thinking we could meet for a quick drink or something for the meet up so that i know how many people to expect. I can then book the hall for the week after and away we go. Automatically Appended Next Post: So far the list of people interested looks something like this:
ForsakenBacon - IG (yeah decided to go with these guys...horde infantry ftw - I'll be buying my first 500pt foot slogging troops on Friday).
Blackgaze - ORK/ IG/NECRON/TRYANIDS
Lovepug13 - ?
EldiabloAkaRuss - ?
Master of Asgard - DA
Shoggoth (+ 2 mates)- SISTERS/ CSM/TAU
ChaosLordSam-?
ArbitorIan - ?

Quick update guys - I now have the basic gaming boards, they are 4' x 2' so can be combined to 4' x 4' or 4' x 6' etc. I just need some help with terrain if possible. I'm seeing if i can get my hands on some foam boards to make into terrain as anything else really is a pain to work with. I'll keep you all updated though.
I'm gunna make (well my girlfriend is) some little shop ads that i will put in the two places i know have connections to wargaming in greenwich to see if we cant get more people together.
I was talking to BlackGaze last night on msn/windows live and I realised that msn might be a good way to keep some of you informed. If you have msn feel free to add me at yemstar3@hotmail.com
Lastly, i think its best that instead of a little meet up on the 4th august, we just wait until we have everything sorted and ready to go. Therefore, the first meet up will be at the chuch hall so bring your models .
I think that's it for now unless I missed anything...

So is the meet up this Thursday going to include some test games?
3 hours is a bit short of time for a weekly gaming club, but it be fine for the first week in preparation. Eventually we will need to extend it to 5 hours average.
Do we meet up at 6.00 (Earliest) at Sunfield Church this Thursday? Are you able to book the church then and every week onwards?
If you could give the address and possible a map (googlemaps?) for the location for people to find it easier, that would help a lot.
Do we also pay for this first week? Or not until things are smoothly working?
Also I might be buying a piece of terrain, nothing big but I won't be able to contribute much terrain right now, so it help for the meantime. Doubtfully for this week though.

Guys, maybe I didn't explain too well. What i meant was:
WE WILL NOT BE MEETING ON THE 4th! I still need a little time to get the boards ready etc. But we will definitely be good to go by mid/end of August at the latest (most likely the 11th).
Sorry....but this will let people get their armies ready, give me time to get the terrain sorted (I still can't find any damned foam!) and see how many people are actually coming.
I will be happy to book the hall as long as I know enough people will be coming to cover the cost, that works out at a minimum of 6 people at £5 to cover the £30 cost.
I can see what I can do about not paying for the first time but if I am paying out of my own money I obv need to get some of the money back .

Good lord Cy! I'm almost embarrassed to link this now, but i finally managed to get my hands on some foam so some rocks/hill terrain is incoming. And I have plastic for fences a bit like yours!

I don't have the time, materials or skills (even with a guide) to make terrain, but would Bacon or Cyber be interested in having it?
I also have some White Dwarfs back from the 3rd 40k edition era that has some handy tips to making good terrain (even some nice Mordheim buildings), would you like some photocopies for the day?
Also I try and buy some pieces if I can see my eye on them without going crazy on spending.

I forgot to say that looks fantastic! It's really cool that you're going to provide this
Anything else planned for the day? I'm sure some unit could use... 6+cover save... yeah
Also ForsakenBacon, although we be providing additional terrain for the gaming club, say if something went wrong and sometime in the future we had to close. Is it possible to keep the terrain we made/brought for you when it's all well and done?
It's not a big deal, since they're gifts for the club. But I'm sure your house can't hold them all

sure, you can keep whatever terrain you make and if you don't want it i'll be happy to take it off your hands. But hopefully we will be playing a long time after the terrain has worn out.
The terrain will be kept on site most likely, or you can take it home and bring it back/give it to me to store. I don't have a problem with either of these options.
As for the terrain book, thanks for the offer but I think I have a copy of it somewhere.

Guys, I'm out of inspiration for the boards, I have one that is sand/grass based with rocks, basically the standard kinda board.
i think the second board will be an urban board with fences/ buildings etc... Anyone have any ideas as to any other type of board they might like?
In fact, does anyone want a board to work on? Things would go a lot faster that way lol Automatically Appended Next Post: http://secondsphere.org/index.php/topic,769.0.html

Just a list of ideas, though obviously no rush to get them down... if you even CAN rush them
Snow board with a radar station in the middle
Swamp board with 3 river streams. include dangerous terrain mudtraps
Jungle board with death plants and marshes everywhere
lava world with dangerous terrain cracks
a plain grassboard... obviously for custom design
an ork fortress central in a desert board
an farmland board with hayfields (lots of em), wooden building and roads
A battlefield with craters, wrecked vehicles, barrels, weapons, debris and TRENCHES (think world war 1 inspiration)
steampunk inspired train station with brick/wood-constructed buildings and wires everywhere.
forest board with... well, trees everywhere. FOREST board
Giant cross-motorway with different heights. Bizarre idea
Industrial zone (possible Inquisitor/Necromunda inspired) or Neon Lights and Logos everywhere. Possible central city district?
and so forth, I post more if needed

Wrong person Bacon
Also Bromley GW on thursday was much MUCH better than wednesday Bluewater. For one thing there were plenty of spare tables
Challenged an Imperial Guard Army, I lost... but I was foolish to assault with my Orks too early, just one more turn of movement.
About terrain I'm looking at various sources right now but I did find this and I thought it was a pretty good deal

5 craters (4 if you balance the sizes) for roughly £12, I might get this if you won't. They will be great to mix in any field, mainly grass though

Hi,
I'm living in Lee and spotted the notice about this club. I've been gaming at GW Bromley recently, but Blackheath would be a bit handier! I'm not on Facebook, so I thought I'd post here instead. I can field about 1k of IG, Orks or Marines (although the latter are my daughter's army) and am happy to chip in with terrain (scratch built hills, buildings & some resin bits).
Have you sorted out a day/time for a get-together?

Amera are very good for cheap terrain - it's all simple, vac-formed pieces that can take up a lot of table-space..

I have an army for Bacon if his Eldar are not ready, though only 1000 points. Could extend to 1500 if needed.
Can the place be booked in time? Also going to need an confirmation for this if true

also bring in other scenery material , I have shed loads of old yoghurt pots and boxes to make into scenery?

Afternoon guys, I have a business meeting on Thurs 11 so we will have to meet on 18th. I'll get cracking and book the hall for then provided we have enough people coming ( I will PM you all) If you know someone who isn't on the forums but would like to come on the day let me know via PM.
As for terrain, we can sort a day to meet but it cannot be at the church so I'm not sure where we can all meet to paint etc. Any help on terrain would be amazing however.
I'm trying to get as much sorted as I can but it's going slow. Worst case scenario is that we will be playing on boards with no texture for a few weeks (thats texture, not terrain).

Best to arrange after the thursday... if there is an event at thursday. Depends on the riot conditions
I don't think I'm going to get those craters now, I misread the part about it being unpainted and unflocked which put me off.
I will still try and bring something though, now I can't promise if it arrive in time.

Well if this week is going to be 2 hours (I need to know the update from bacon) I might not be able to play
I want to give Bacon his first 40k and just relax the 2 hours without rushing it.
We see if there is time later if no one challenges you
In terrain news I've bought some craters though unpainted/unflocked and I might get some model train buildings, but they're good model sizes for 40k converting... just don't expect it done on the first week.
I might need Bacon to pick it up if I can't carry it... it willl be big terrain pieces If I manage to get them

Right guys, the plan is that by Thursday I will have 4 boards ready, Urban, desert, grass and lava. I'll see if I can get anymore completed but then but I dunno. That's enough for 8 people to play. Again, any terrain would be awesome, unpainted or painted, I don't mind because it's early days. Bit of a late call, I was about to leave to somewhere in 5 minutes, then afterwards straight to the club.
I was ready for tonight as well. I be in Bromley GW instead, if you want to tag along (I have both armies like tonight)
I still think something's not right. The owner should've made sure everything was fine tonight... and I still finds the £15 hour for an average room that doesn't get used often is expensive for what it is... even hotel rooms for a day are cheaper when you calculate the hours.

The place is nice
Just ignore the managers
and the locals are more misses than hits
But if you and/or Yemi or/and anyone else wants to show up, that be ok. GW Bromley is a battle bunker, so there be like 6-8 tables upstairs (hopefully all day, different per week, i'm leaving early to check) so we have enough time to play battles till 9.00
Since the battle bunker is upstairs we wont have any customers or kids wandering around. Since it's summer there might be the 12 year olds, but they wont bother us if we dont bother them... like we would
and I forgot to add you on Steam, one second...

As I said... ignore the managers. Although they're not the same ones you're talking about (changed around again this year)... I think
I don't know why people try talking and getting involved with them in the first place, you're here for the games NOT THEM
and if you want to shop, buy, ignore the chit chat involved and continue what you were doing/leave
I'm going down there regardless since it's the only chance I can get to battle.

cyphertheory wrote:whats the usual game size and style there?

As strange as this sounds
Relaxed competative
half of the games, maybe more are reserved but the 2 who always play each other every week. But I usually play the occassional random
They tend to have annoying (comp)army lists, just we don't rush and just take our time (relax)
I don't like the regulars there for reasons I won't explain right now, but they're generally not very likeable but not on the level of "that guy". But there are nice folk... just don't expect them all the time.
I be there every week till this club sets up, so you know I be there for relaxed battles with 3 possible faction choices
-edit-
Campaigns tend to belong to the reserved players, I've never had to play one here before. The only time I would like to get in an ongoing campaign is through Mordheim, Gorkamorks (etc)
When I recently returned to 40k I went to Bluewater, and the first random player I played was playing the campaign rules without telling me; regardless to say he was more overpowered... he was also a moron in attitude and play style
-edit edit -
just leaving for Bromley now. I be there all day... hopefully

Let's hope so. I would post as soon as I have the news, but this is Yemi's (bacon) call, also we need to sort out the pay and hours. Could be wednesday before anything is said
If you have any terrain, that would help too.
I won't be part of the 2000k battle for this week at least, booked a 1000v1000 with Yemi.
Also it's good to see you had a look into this; and you're one of the few Bromley members I enjoyed playing against (as long as your Tau aint being annoying)
Also, also. I hate facebook

Apparently i'm too slow to play with you, not my fault my army is mass-models and you know, actually vulnerable
Also to answer why my Imperial Guard is more fun... because I use... a DIFFERENT ARMY LIST
If the greenwich club is up this week, I need to go to check it out regardless, but I might be at Bromley 12-4.00ish, and you usually arrive about 5.00... so, yeah.
It's likely I be having Necrons (Imperial Guard second chance)
Also, my Tyranids are in the works so you will get to fight them in the future, just give it about a month or so.

Hey, welcome Sorry about the craziness, I've been trying to set this up as well as a business so it's been hectic!
The club should be up and ready on Thursday, today I am aiming on finishing up the boards, so far the plan on boards is this:
 Muddy, cliiffy
Open grass area with some hills etc
Urban burnt out buildings and craters (BG im looking at you for craters !)
 Snowy mountainous
 Lava rock etc
These are the boards that I have in the works. (if you guys want anything else lemmie know)
When they are done i'll prob make a youtube video of them all. Speaking of youtube, it would be good to get our own battlereport channel going just for the hell of it.
Don't worry, I have the camera, just wondered if anyone was interested in being filmed playing on the day.

The craters are being worked on. I wasn't going to take a photo as they were meant to be shown on the day, but I might go ahead with this soon.
They are painted grey so they can fit on any board really... though some have grassy parts.
Also I didn't think your urban board would have any complete buildings at it, so I hope we get to play on that first!
You can take photos if you want, though we're only having a try out game this week. Any future games are fine by me
-edit-
There use to be a lava world at Bromley... it wasn't fun to play on at it, way too much lava streams.
Also we're going to need a woods-terrain board eventually (or swamp/jungle), I love my Imperial Guard to try that out!
-edit edit-

As I said to you I will try to sort out some kind of deal with the church. However, if that doesn't happen then members will affect cost, £5 each is just the bare minimum needed for 6 people to play . More members = cheaper fee and enough money for more hours essentially....
2 hours was always the original agreed time limit and I came to that conclusion after talking to a few members and everyone seemed to agree. I think we would all like to see the time extended, and hopefully it will be.

I will say Bromley's packed tonight, many apoc games going on. But we should get a table no doubt

I have no idea, best to forget this week though. I can't seem to contact Yemi at the moment.
It's possible if this place doesn't work out, we might have to relocate somewhere outside Greenwich, but not too far to make it harder for everyone else.

Post by: strontium_dog
Thanks for dropping me a line about this - it's appreciated. I'll check back later on to see if there is any more activity, but it doesn't look too hopeful.
Overall, mind, this is a solid idea and there are plenty of church halls in the Blackheath/Greenwich/Kidbrooke/Lee area that might have an evening slot free. SELWG used to meet at one down the road from me at Grove Park, before they moved on to Catford. Maybe we might investigate alternatives, as suggested, if Sunfields is proving tricky/costly?
43514

I'm not in charge so I can't decide. It doesn't have to be a church though
I might just stick to a London group in days to come

He might be able to extend the hours, but we've got to wait a while. It might even end up being outside the Greenwich region, and to somewhere local around it

Going to be weeks at this point
I tend to not speak for Yemi, but he hasn't posted in a while... so we have two options
1. Yemi (bacon) will try and get a better deal from the Church folk to increase the hours/reduce the pay so we can get started there
2. Find another location just outside of Greenwich. He's tried everything that he has access to
If anyone has any suggestions PLEASE say something

Hello all,
Sorry for reviving an old thread. I'm studying (or at least pretending to) at Greenwich University. I'm not looking to join an actual playing club at the moment since I live quite far away and it would be a real hassle to bring my minis with me, and I doubt they'd survive the long trip plus a full day of lectures and seminars, but I would be able to participate in games in a couple of months, once I move closer to the area. For now, I'm looking for more of a social gathering, particularly since I have very long breaks between lectures and there's not much to do except lurk inside Nauticalia or sit in a pub and stare at the owner. Do any of you attend Greenwich Uni?
I've set up a Warhammer Club/Society thingy in the Greenwith University portal.
I would also be willing to help set up games, move furniture around, bring rulebooks, participate in line of sight arguments and generally hang out whilst not actually playing myself, if you're playing close to the University and I happen to be around.

Nice to have another member, but again we dont have a location yet. I've lost contact with Yemi (Bacon) for the moment and I don't know the status of the gaming club. I want to get started as soon as possible, but I'm not in charge (and personally don't want to be)
Also what do you mean "pretend" to be studying? Are you studying or not? I think Yemi tried to host at the university before but I can't remeber why that didn't pull through. Would be nice for a temporary club if your portal allows a room... though would be meaning to wait a few months

Apologies. I am indeed studying at the University of Greenwich. What I meant to say is that I don't study too much, I just waste my time playing video games, playing hockey, painting 40k and so on.
Hosting at the University would be hard. They do have some function rooms in the Student's Union, but as of late they've been really strict regarding guests. I'll ask around though.
The club I've set up in the portal is really just a glorified forum or notice board. Just a way to get people from the Uni with a common interest to share each other's details. It's only available to Greenwich students, and at the moment it seems like I'm the only person in the entire campus who is into it.

Well at least you tried to help. I've been waiting since this was announced.
Also Darksphere in London does game nights on Tuesday (skirmishes including 40k), it seems to be a good option for now for hostings.

Shame you bumped this thread. It's pretty much dead now till Bacon FINALLY decides to return.
I would love to fight your army, add me on messenger/steam some time for a game (spider head @ hot mail .co. uk // Blackgaze)
Or you can catch me at Games Workshop - Oxford Street London these days. I use to be at Bromley, but after a series of bad events I've officially left there.

Wow, that's a thread necro and a half.
If anyone is interested, in the intervening time since this thread was started, THIS has happened, just over the river...
