Gulliman. He led the most successful Legion. He established a interplanetary domain which is one of the few oases in the desert of war torn hell that is the 40k universe. From his Legion descended over half the active Space Marines in existence. He literally wrote the book on Space Marine organization and tactics. While there are several I like better, I have to put my feelings on the back burner and make an objective decision.

The Imperium is still the largest military and political entity in the galaxy, and the Traitor Legions are still stuck hiding in reality's bunghole. Thanks to Sanguinius holding the Ultimate Gate during the Siege of Terra and creating a dent in Horus' psychic defenses through which the Emperor hit him with Jaws of the Angry Daddy. Sure, some other guys did some stuff, I guess, but my blind fanboyism leads me to vote for Sanguinius!

How is sanguinius ahead of Gulliman, obviously to many BA players now, pretty soon they are gonna be the poster boys and there will be a "whats wrong with BA" thread. My answer, sanguinius was their primarch, and was a pansy

Because Sanguinus is more likable than Rawbutt Girlyman. Aside from killing a Bloodthirster and holding The Eternity Gate by himself, also fought and weakened Horus and was generally liked by all his brothers. Even Horus himself believed Sanguinus to be the true hope for humanity.

if we are comparing primarchs to presidents, id say that Sanguinius is like kennedy. Pretty boy who everyone likes that did do some good, but really didnt do much super helpful except become popular because he died.

I would compare gulliman to lincoln. He helped save the union(imperium) in a great time of need(after the heresy and the imperium needed protecting), plus not that many people like him(lincoln was NOT popular while in office until the end of the war), and they both died while in office

did i say that kennedy was supid? and i didnt say sanguinius was stupid or did nothing. If i did, i didnt mean to because i dont believe that, I just meant to say that had kennedy not died in office, he would not have been nearly as possible. He did do some things, Cuban Missile Crisis, created peace corps, made a nuclear test ban treaty with kruschev, but I dont think he is in the top 5 presidents as many people place him at. What my point on sanguinius was(and its purely opinion) was that he was more popular because he was the pretty boy, who died, and thus his triumphs were magnified beyond what I believe his station was. Essentially, you called him a pansy, that did nothing aside from die, which you don't have to apologize for. I would rate him in top 5 too, ahead of Rowboat Gorillaman simply because the latter Primarch did very little personally in my opinion. Wrote the Codex Astartes, that puts him in the top five. Protecting the Imperium was down to his Legions numbers though.
I'm not going to comment on Kennedy, I know next to nothing about him other than the Crisis.

he was a president who did some good things, but became insanely popular and glorified after he died, that was just my take on sanguinius, may not be that accurate, dont know a ton about sanguinius...just the impression that i have gotten from what i have read on him and what people in the forums have said.

But Russ is one of those guys who, despite his flaws (remember, horus was like a close brother... and the Emprah told him to as well) always pulls through and tries to make things right. His legion was only able to do this because whenever something big happened he was convieniantly on the other side of the galaxy. Sanguinus was the most loyal Primarch and had no flaws. Without him Horus would have killed Big E and won the heresy.

The Ultramarines were on the other side of the galaxy when the Heresy happened because Horus was scared less of the Ultramarines so he made sure the heresy happened when the Ultramarines were as far away as possible.

He sent the Wolves to kill Magnus(unlike the Emperor's orders, which were to arrest Magnus) to drive the Thousand Sons to his side. Istvaan was about eliminating Legions so that he could tip the balance and put the odds in his favor. It wasn't about being afraid, it was about being smart.

he aint afraid of any of the legions, he hust aint stupid enough to take them all on head to head.

my vote is the lion, 50 years and he has almost as many victories as horus, added to the fact he was prob joint 2nd/3rd best combat primarch, and THE best strategist.

In "A thousand Sons", Magnus threats a Space Wolves commander to tear the Space Wolves fleet stationed in Orbit apart by sheer will... and Ahriman was not able to tell if Magnus was bluffing or if he really had this much power.

Plus, he was able to smash himself into the Gateway to Terra while in being in the Warp - something even the mightiest Chaos Deamons were not able to do (okay, a few hundred psyker died to feed him with power..)

ONe of his lines in the short story Savage Weapons Show nobility and sacrifice through and through in my book.

He spent most of the Heresy proper chasing after the Night Lords, finally almost getting his brains bashed in by Konrad. After the Heresy, the Dark Angels were catatonic over Luther's (justified IMO) betrayal and the destruction of their planet. It was the Ultramarines that held the Imperium together after the Heresy. Although even they were probably just Alpha Legionnaires in disguise.

Anyway, Alpharius is clearly the victor of this thread.

i voted Fulgrim, because he slashed up some other primarchs has a cool sword, his men wear pink, and because Alpharius does not wish to draw attention to himself

This exchange confuses me, because it seems to be talking more about Guilliman than the Lion. The only thing the Lion accomplishes in Age of Darkness is to get his brains scrambled by the Night Haunter.

That said, this accusation of treachery is often lobbed at Guilliman, so I will chime in. His Legion was about as far from Terra as you can get at the time, and with the Four screwing up the Warp for communication and travel, it's unlikely he would have reached Terra in time. And he did send forces to help, as the Ultramarines are listed as one of the three Legions that arrived too little, too late (Dark Angels and Space Wolves being the other two, both of whom were far closer than the easternmost fringe).

As for Imperium Secundus, he was preparing for every eventuality. There were two possible outcomes of the Heresy:

1.) Loyalist forces win. Both sides will be diminished, and someone will have to keep order as well as chase the remnant traitor forces out of the galaxy. AKA The Scouring AKA "What Actually Happened"

2.) The traitors win. The war is not over, however, with the Ultramarines holding a large portion of the galaxy where the dreams and ideals of the Imperium (prosperity, enlightenment, etc.) can survive. AKA what also sort of happened
