OK so the loyal iron warrior idea died an inglorious death but a new idea rose up and that was what to do with 100 mk 3 iron armour and an ig army that has more tanks and super heavies to shake a stick at. From this dilemma I decided on an appeal for chaos to and continue the work on my world eater and fill my want for iron warriors by combining tactics from the iw and turn my we into somewhat tactical/armored company. The new project starts on pg 3, the other 2 pages are kinda empty of my pics since i deleted them. But a teaser from pg 3

Good analysis you're correct they're a loyalist company, well half a company that got trapped in a warp storm when fleeing their legion.

I love the forgeworld mk3 armor and i like the idea of a loyalist subchapter created from one of the traitor legions.
I can't wait to see more pics and good luck with the building (then again shiny new models tend to be a labor of love at least to me)

why a blue helmet? I feel it really clashes with the rest of colour giving a very disjointed look.

Perhaps because the "codex colour" of librarians are blue? In any case I think it looks good, however the metal could use a wash or something else that gives it a little more deep. And base it, that gives a lot to the quality.

Then the logtic is flawed, the Irons Warrior never followed the codex as it was written after the Horus Heresy, so why would he have a blue helmet? Also gotta say as a fellow I.W fantic i dont like the idea of loyalist Iron Warriors. To me its right there with 'chaos grey knights'.

OK guys ty so much for all the post, as for the helmet and shoulders I wanted it to clash, the chapter picked the color to break their loyalties to perturabus and show the emperor that they'll follow him no matter what. But the helmets are not blue but turqouise.

I think the solid colours really don't work with the metallics used on the rest of the model.
Whilst i appreciate the theme of the army, i just don't like the colour scheme.

I like where you're going with the fluff, and definitely look forwards to seeing the whole army.
As for the criticism that has been levelled with regard to the paint scheme's aesthetics, I'm inclined to agree that the bold virgin colours sit somewhat discordantly with the metallics and industrial/steampunk design. I think some weathering techniques - black/brown washes, metallic stippling/drybrushing, maybe even weathering powders - would really tie things together.
For instance, the faceplate on the Sternguard heads has black diagonal stripes and black diagonal grilling; this results in two sets of black lines merging. A bit of metallic edgework in the grilles to suggest wearing of paint would help define some of those edges that are getting lost in the danger stripes.

Other than the Inquistion symbol on the head of the staff, the backstabbing betrayal of the bits i gave you and the overall lack of highlights and shading they are decent, storm bolters could use the firing muzle instead of looking like your just going to shoot nothing. Jade effect looks off on the staff it seem to be on one side only more towards the backside rather than throughout the staff like real jade.
6/10 imho and that is me being quite fair.

^^ agreed...
If kingtoad is reletively new to painting though, i think the techniques required to 'pull off' the intended colour scheme are a little beyond him.
I think applying a lot of washes to the metallics, and at least one stage of highlights to the solid colour would make the overall effect much better!

I like the back story you have going there. Too much of the yellow/black line action though just makes me think they'd make easy targets. Having said that, yellow and black can be used together quite well, even with metallics (IMHO).
Also, that's a lot of disposable income sitting in that FW box. : )
Cheers.

Not bad for the sword. Could of layered slightly more to give it more of powerful gradient, mold lines are distracting and the wings need another layer or 2 of the dneb stone and skull white mix preferably 1:1 and than 1:2

Gladly once they are up to my standard. Better yet my wife will show you what I mean with her Lady Justice model. It is not hard and it draws out the model beautifly. If you really want to see one of my models I can always show you the one I got commissioned, but then again I did not paint those but they will show what i mean beautifly.

err o.k, so now he is just one big hazard stripe?
Many years ago when i was a kid at school, i had to design a t shirt. I did a fred flintstone design. I kept it simple and when i was almost finished everyone was like that looks great. Then i started adding more details and new stuff and after a hour or so instead of having a really nice and simply design on my t shirt which looked good to wear in public, i ended up with something that a tramp had vomited on after drinking food colouring. The concept behind the sergeant and sterguard having all the yellow is to show all the battles they have been in, for instance the Sgt has been in so many campaigns that ea stripe indicates a campaign or battle he participated in. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also for all comments on not enough detail, not once have I ever said the models were finished. Once I get all the paints I need more will be completed and oh no I'm not new to painting, maybe some techniques yes and there's no such thing being beyond a persons grasp as the saying goes ignorance is only the absence of knowledge but leaves room for the ability to learn and grow something great from the void of knowledge.

I like your ideas, but have to agree with the less-is-more initiative. Your Sternguard Sergeant is such a veteran that he's completely covered his chapter colors. No marine would ever do that.
If your fluff is that for each campaign, they get a stripe, your captains/command squad/honor guard will be better off just sprayed yellow, with a latticework of incredibly thin stripes painted on and a bit of devlan mud to shade the yellow.
And why the blue? You explained that on the Librarian, why on the Sternguard guy?
Please don't take this as mean-spirited, I like your idea, and your devotion to the hobby at buying that many mk3 models to keep a unified theme is awesome, but it just seems like you didn't really think the fluff through. At this rate, unless you're fielding a chapter of fresh-from-scout devastators, your army won't be the Iron Hounds as much as the Yellow Hazard Stripes.

I like the sword , it looks cool.
With regards to the background, if you read Age of Darkness, there is a story there where Iron Warriors loyal to the Emperor fought those who sided with Horus and escaped. It is definitely worth a read and could also give some ideas for this project.
Their Ultramarine allies sought to bring the loyalist(s) to Terra for example.
First off I do like the direction that you want to take these guys and with a bit of planning it could look spectacular.
With regards to the Sargeant, it is way too busy with the hazard striping. I guess you want to use it to denote rank, but I feel a plain metallic chest plat with possibly black/yellow eding would be more consistent. Possibly give the metalics and blue areas a wash with blue/ black wash to tie the ares together.
Maybe make the kneepads striped maybe but not all the legs. I also agree with lindsay40k about the helm.
Thats just my thoughts.
Automatically Appended Next Post: lol, for some reason i managed to miss most of page 2.
Another thought, if they are iron hounds then if you know someone with SW decals from FW, they have company symbols from all the great companies including Egil Ironwolf. If you know someone who has these but isnt using them, it would make a nice chapter symbol.
Drill out your gun barrels too, would be a nice touch.
Like Lysenis I do not mean to cause offfense or disrespect, you have a vision and should follow it, however sometimes an outside view can help.

Post by: KingToad87
Ty for the posts no offense taken, in regard to the turqouise it was chosen to make them stand out. And the rest of the chapter will look very similar to the librarian, the Sgt isn't finished and I started on the rest of the squad which I made it to where some of them don't have as much yellow. The chest plate and grille are the first part of their armour to be painted as to show their assension to vet. Also the vanguard, for later on will have a different stripe pattern to seperate them from the stern.

You people do enjoy complaining don't you? Yes it looks like a bee, yes there's far too many stripes. But that's how he wanted to paint him. If hew ants to paint his models with hazard stripes galore then let him. But that must be an unheard of concept for some posters. They look good though the black looks a bit transparent in spots.

Interesting concept, and solid painting. The paint job itself is a little busy, the totality of the hazard stripes or "campaign chevrons" as you called them, make it difficult for me to pick out the details of the actual model under the paint.
Washes would help tone down the overall brightness of the yellow, but if you're happy with the model that's all that really matters.
Just my two cents...

Like what you're doing bud. Looks snazzy! Definitely a new direction to go with those MK III marines. Looking forward to seeing what else you can do.
And I agree with Lunarghost. Paint the whole damn army in hazard stripes if you want to. Your stuff, your rules, everyone else can suck it.
However, if I might make one suggestion, have you considered washing the model at all? Thinned down coat of badaab black or devlan mud does WONDERS at making a mini look more uniform. I get that the colors are supposed to clash, but it might be something to lookinto or test on a test mini sometime just for the hell of it.
I will stay tuned for your further progress.
Also, NICE JOB ON THE BOLTERS!!! LOVE what you did with the scopes. Consider the idea archived for Iron Monger usage!
