Tomorrow is once again my birthday, so just like a couple of years ago, I thought I would abuse my admin power to start a one-off fairly offtopic thread about dakka here for my own enjoyment tomorrow. Dakka represents a very large chunk of my free time, and so it is a nice birthday present for me to be able to read anything nice about how you enjoy dakka, what you like about dakka and what keeps you coming back. Nothing negative here please (including about other sites), and no feature requests, just a nice big virtual hippie bongo drum circle. I look forward to reading your input tomorrow, and thanks for making dakka what it is from me to all our members
*p.s. for those who do not know who I am, I am one half of the pair that owns dakka, and I am responsible for the technical side of things (all software, hardware, services).
DakkaDakka helped prevent my suicide. I'm not even kidding. I got depressed because of some medication I was taking back in March and communicating on the site cheered me enough to stop and talk to a doctor.
I like the fact that its largely whine free, I like the mods (despite being warned for stuff the mods are largely *nice*), interface is nice, emoticons are nice. Seems a bit more relaxed than other forua.

This is the only song that can convey the happiness that I hope you experience on this day; I raise a glass to the man without whom the internet would be completely without value.
Nice site British. I really like this place. The peeps are cool and thought provoking. This place helps me keep abreast with what's going on in the wargaming hobby in general and it really helps me the urge to keep on painting. I find something new to like about this place every day.
Dakka is the first website I open when I wake up in the morning. I look forward to the debates and discussions, even with others who don't agree with my point of view. It's fun to leave a sarcastic, witty message in a post and see if it has sparked anything interesting. I keep coming back because I love it. Made a few internet acquaintances on here and all-around it's a good time and a good site. Thanks Legoburner. If the hard cider mill was open when I went past it, I'd have made a toast to you tonight. Alas, I can only toast with iced tea. So here's to you, from the bottom of my McD's tea cup!
I like how DakkaDakka embraces wargaming and miniatures as a whole and doesn't focus alone on Games Workshop. I stay here because topics pop up often in News&Rumors regarding games I care about such as Infinity and Malifaux.
Even some related companies post around here such as Paulson, Chapterhouse, Trollforged, etc. Battlefoam abuses this by posting dozens of new threads whenever one of their bags comes with a new decal.
Finally, I love the attitude of people. Posting images of salt flats is allowed yet not abused. People can act natural without overmoderation.
I like the friendly mood of the site. I also find it interesting reading many of the threads and the funny things like the CRASSUS ARMORED ASSAULT TRANSPORT and Space Corridors and Industrial Towers.

Don't forget the Herman Heresy, Victim Blaming and DOOMBREAD.
I love it here, it has really helped me over the 2 years i've been here. And my typing skills have doubled.
And not only that but helpful sex advice, dating advice. (Most from Cannerus)
Not only this but it made me get over the girl that called me a hacker and basically ripped my heart out. The next day i told some dakkanauts this, and they made fun of her, which in all honesty made me happy and glad because it was so light hearted and so freaking true. Dear god she freaked out because I wished her a happy birthday............. She thought it was creepy i would remember it because it was on her facebook account in all seriousness she got scared and angry at nothing but her own stupidty. -.-
And so many memes especially when people called the girl I like now a Justin Bieber. Which in itself is hilarious.
But anyway the threads here have made me write better overall, it has led to some of my best ideas and some of my best jokes, and has also made me intelligent in debates. It has also made me want to do more physical exercise SOMEHOW.
But it is also nice to be noticed by denizens of Dakka Dakka as they are always happy to share the input on my writing.
Then it has also introduced to my addiction to making fun of everyone as much as possible which is a good and bad addiction or is it a habit?
Anyway Happy Birthday LEGOBURNER!!!!!!!!!!!!! May the cake be with you.
And not only that but helpful sex advice, dating advice. (Most from Cannerus)
Good grief Ash, this is what is wrong with Dakka!
Don't listen to Cannerus he will lead you astray!
In all honesty his sex advice is the best but his dating advice especially if I am Young Australian Traceur really makes me attractive as it already is.
But, when i first joined dakka I thought i was going to see nerd rage daily, and i expected everyone to post videos with them and their dorky glasses, they have 10,000 points of orks and they paint their skin green everyday, that is what i thought i was joining into. I was proven wrong
I love dakkadakka. I frequent it every day that I can. Its a great place to share ideas on hobbies, gaming, and sometimes off topic stuff... at least for me it is. I love the gallery and the different sections that the forum has. The Orkmoticons are great. I like those little icons that represent different armies/races.
While I don't post a lot, I LOVE Dakka. In fact, I always have dakka open in a tab, no kidding. It's almost embarrassing to admit that the only time I'm not on Dakka is when I'm away from ANY technological device, but hell, the site's worth it.
The gallery is top notch, the community is active and healthy, and it really deserves its status as the #1 Wargaming community site, 40k, Warmachine or otherwise.
I think the admins/mods by and large are full of awesome-sauce, esp Alphie, Mannahin, Ritides, KidKyoto and GreyDeath... It goes on, each has been awesome to me at some point in completely different ways, and frankly almost every other Mod and Yak too.
Alright, here is where things will seem ass-kissy. I have browsed other forums out of sheer curiosity, even contributed to Romeo and Kyle over at 40kradio because I enjoy their podcast. The thing that keeps me coming back to Dakka, besides the friends I've made here, is that it is, by far, the easiest forum I have ever used. Everything makes sense, you have not shoe-horned in the feature du jour just because you could, the interface is not overly cluttered, the default scheme is very legible and the hierarchy is clear. I gather, that in massive proportions, that is thanks to you, so a big thanks from me for providing me with this awesome distraction. The only thing I don't like that much is the Dakka logo, but one day I will convince you guys to let me re-do it
That being said, given the time I have spent on here in the past 2 years, I have seen very little of you posting, at least in the portions I haunt (DCM, News, anything PandM). I for one, would love to get to know you better, hear more about what it is you do for us, what's going on with the site, your points of view etc etc. I am interested in both the strategic/technical aspect of what you do here as well as perspective from someone so obviously connected to all of us, though many may not know it.
Cheers my friend, thank you again, and happy birthday!
Now i want cookies! and cake..........
Lego burner thanks for ensuring dakka dakka does not crash on us like Warseer does every 2 months hence why i quit Warseer It virused me and i never went back XD
DakkaDakka is my one stop shop for anything modelling, from buying and trading, to drooling over other's painting skills, to generally discussing the randomness that is wargaming. Love this site!
I am a believer in the community that's been created at dakka. It's a broad church, can be rough and tumble, but it's capable of great things.
Legoburner, your hard work has paid off, dakka is a smooth running and friendly to use site. I and others like me like what you and the crew have done and continue to do enough to financially contribute to the site to show our thanks for this wonderful resource.
You're the Chief Engineer of a very fine ship sir.
coolyo294 wrote:D.O.O.M.F.A.R.T will overthrow you eventually Legoburner, but until then happy birthday.
I could not second this post more!
Dakka is a great site with some amazing members, from the painters to the rules lawyers and everyone inbetween. And since I have been on dakka (been a lurker for years...always in the shadows..waiting....sidetracked...) I have never encountered a problem with this site. And to that i say bravo and have a very merry birthday!
Layout is nicely structured, community is good, gallery has some great pictures in it and the mods are actually there rather than sneaking around in the background to throw the ban hammer at anything that might even get close to one of the rules. Has kept me coming back pretty much every day since I joined back in 2009.

viva-la doomfart
ahhh doomfart the only group on dakka dakka to ever declare war on stupidity.
By the way Legoburner your name is my most favorite of all the usernames its awesome, burning legos! Boy that is so much fun!
Happy birthday! I like the mix of great Blogs, friendly atmosphere withough sacrificing vigorous debate, and proactive mods for mod-hammering those who push the boundaries. Keeps me visiting anyway
In way of a present I have decided that for one year every tenth post of mine will start off with a personally composed poem about how well-endowed you are.
Here’s the first one, a haiku this time because I felt like it.
Like a stallion hung
Pulsing with manly intent
Trash bag sized condoms
I like Dakka because I don't get much time to hobby any more, and posting on Dakka while in work lets me 'keep my hand in' and still enjoy the hobby with like minded people (who are almost non existent in my real-world location).
Also, the free-to-use gallery is an AMAZING feature, and quote me if I'm wrong but Dakka seems to be the only forum which offers such a useful and wonderful service (despite the fact that I personally barely use it, but that's due to lack of stuff worth posting).
In celebration of your birthday, I think someone from the Dakka Minecraft Server needs to make you a cake (I can't personally, as I'm in work, and can't get on minecraft, and have no eggs...) but there is motivation to get someone else to make you a cake!
Thanks everyone, a very nice thing to read first thing in the morning I feel energised and ready to start chipping away at the last few bugs that need squashing before I can start on the gallery improvements.
Thanks for helping to keep this site the number one miniature wargames site out there. I've been posting here for five years and in that time have never felt the need to keep up with other 40k/wargames forums. I've visited and registered with many, but always keep dakka opened up in a tab while online. We have a great community here, a pretty much glitch-free forum, and good mods.
Without Dakka I wouldn't have gone to any Dakka related events and met other Dakkanauts, probably not played any games either. That in itself is enough for me to be grateful.
But also that fact that it is so easy to navigate, even for a Luddite like me has really helped to keep my interest in wargaming alive and well.
So Happy Birthday Lego, and also congrats on being Bi appearantly.
I have to say, compared to the other forums I frequent (The Eve Online forums instantly spring to mind) the Dakka community is always helpful, good natured and generally awesome!
Thanks for providing a cool place to express my inner geek!
I found Dakka when looking for help with painting tips and now login to the site pretty much all day long checking things out on News, Discussions, the various painting forums and the Warmahordes section. I've been ticked off by management more than once for "looking at tanks" but screw them, this site makes for a far more interesting day than working.
The site is great, thanks a lot for all the time and effort you put into it. Happy Birthday legoburner.
Its the first 40k/Fantasy site I came across and, without peer as far as I am concerned. At various times I have been directed to view threads on other sites and have always had a timely reminder as to why I choose to post on Dakka, why I enjoy whiling away the hours here and why it feels like home.
Many thanks to you Lego, for donating both your time and money to maintaining Dakka and keeping it running smoothly - the community is indebted to you. All the best with the birthday - I come to dread them with each passing year these days (its usually the advent of more grey hairs!)
biccat wrote:edit: wait, how does legoburner get two birthdays a year? Or did he mean biennial?
Lego actually lives within a pocket of space-time that goes twice as fast as the rest of the world. It's how he can get all the awesome done on time for us.
I love discussing the hobby on here. The people are always friendly and very helpful. And I love browsing the gallery and seeing all the amazing stuff various dakkanauts have modeled and painted.
legoburner wrote:Thanks everyone, a very nice thing to read first thing in the morning I feel energised and ready to start chipping away at the last few bugs that need squashing before I can start on the gallery improvements.
Dakka's a great site with a great community, and it rarely ceases to keep me interested. Well done, thanks, and have a happy birthday! Here's another cake.
I thought I knew what a good 40k community was but then I came upon dakka. I love the higher then normal maturity level in here as well as all aspects of the hobby being covered, not only one particular army.
I get lots of inspiration from the site and have made lots of new friends and I´m so impressed by the mod team with members like Mannahnin, Reds8n and Alpharius and the good work those awesome dudes do that I´m on my way to get me a DCM soon.
Dakka is the first thing that gets on when computer starts and reading interesting topics and threads while munching down my B.fast always makes for a nice start of a day.
Happy B.day dude and thanks to you and the mods for the best hobby site in the universe
I've said it plenty of times, but Dakka is from a technical standpoint one of the best quality discussion sites I've dealt with and I love that it's always improving.
Good job. Only website I've ever felt motivated enough to donate to!
I enjoy Dakka Dakka for it's always cynical view of the gaming industry. Constant love fests aren't productive, so a bit of criticism is good sometimes.
Plus, hey, no one's gotten mad at me for shamelessly shilling for my preferred game.
I compare Dakka Dakka to a woman. Dakka is lovely blonde women with many great perks With gallerys on the right, fluff competitions, every gamer wishes that their wife was a dakka dakka.
By the way i just learned something interesting, this places buttons all make sense
Thank You Legoburner
This site makes coming to work in the morning worth while Almost everyone is nice and the there's so much useful information on here, its really helped me improve everything about my hobby; painting, tactic's, being able to ramble pointlessly about fluff that nobody else I game with knows anything about, its all good!
Hope you enjoy what's left of your birthday Lego Thanks for everything!
Dakka's about the only thing that makes work bearable and gets me through the day - inspirational p&m section, informative discussions and an all round good bunch of people... It's helped me out no end as a new player, and improved my painting no end...
Happy birthday Lego... God bless Dakka and all who sail in her...
Damn you Lego your site got me back into the hobby. After getting all my old miniatures back from my folks. I had the intention of flogging them on eBay and making some money. Researching what I had on Google images lead me to the gallery and I stayed. Now instead of making a few quid I am considerably poorer and its your fault.
To Legoburner: As I tell all my friends and family members, "Happy Birthday, Mother fether!" My grandmother really hates that, by the way.
The best part of the site is the gallery section. Thank you very much for providing the bandwidth to host all of the wonderful pictures that people have taken of their miniatures. I don't vote as often as I should, but I enjoy thumbing through there.
I also enjoy the news and rumors section. Sometimes, I just gotta know what is coming soon in my new hobby (40k) or my old hobby (modeling, in general).
The painting and modeling forum is always great when I need some inspiration. There are some very talented artists in this hobby.
While 40k Discussion/Background is hit or miss. I'm relatively new to 40k, so there is a lot that I still learn in these forums.
Have to say that I enjoyed having a bit of a chat with you in Nottingham at the Dakka Warhammer World meet/tournament - you seem a nice chap
In terms of Dakka itself... it is pretty cool with a reasonably friendly membership, excellent gallery integration, article section (just got into making articles ), excellent P&M/PLog sections (also love the new showcase section).
Also like that we can all argue about politics and religion in the OT forum
This is the most comprehensive base of knowledge for all things 40K. Painting, tactics, armies, randomness, fluff arguments, FAQs, up to date news about GW releases...I could go on. It is a nexus of information and hobbycraft, and I enjoy it so thoroughly. This website is one of the reasons I got into 40K. And on the technical aspects, I can say that the site runs smoothly, is easy to navigate, and contains all the good attributes of fine interactive design. I really appreciate how well done and maintained it is. Happy Birthday!
This is by far the best looking, and simplest wargaming forum on the internet. The people here are also great, there's a whole range of them and most are good people.
For making this possible Legoburner; I thank you great one.
I dread the day that I come to work and discover the firewall has finally blocked Dakka. Sometimes I have nightmares about it. This place keeps me sane, seriously.
Thanks for all the hard work, LB. I love the gallery and the DCM gentleman's lounge. You deserve no less than a free re-roll at any in-store GW event. Quite possibly at any GW event!

Lies, Legoburner, it maybe your birthday but you and I both know that this needs to be swept under the rug real fast before people start getting ideas.
Happy Birthday .

i'd watch out if i were you, look outside your house/apartment/living space, you will see black van and men in suits and sunglasses watching you. you know too much...

My work blocked it a couple of weeks ago... I've been so damn productive since :(
This site has kept me sane thoruhg a grueling last year of Uni, and after luring me in with P&M Blogs and witty banter in the OT forum, i am Dakka-exclusive since i joined and loving every second of it, so thank you for keeping it running smoothly and looking beautiful ()
I wish I was to import pics from my phone as I have a picture lying around of a half-eaten LR cake that I'd love to share in this thread.
But anywho Dakkadakka is a great, entertaining site, and it is the webpage I browse whenever I have a chance to use a computer (which is most of the time).
I love DakkaDakka because i always see all these creative and whacky (in a good way) ideas, i also use this site to find out allot of news about games/ movies/ Warhamer40K releases. The mods are great and from what i have seen keep a good lockdown on most of the threads that need it.
Happy Birthday Legoburner, hope your day is filled with fun and merrymaking
There is no better online community to discuss this hobby, which is very important to me. When the real life 40k community around you is small as it is with me, this makes dakka all the more important.
Also, the 'subscribe' feature is great but the most useful, helpful and awesome feature is 'skip to first unread' - that right there is gold I tell you, gold!
I'd bet that the 'ignore' feature is fantastic too, but sadly I'll never know...!
Well my birthday has been and gone and I was checking this thread on and off throughout the day, each time giving me a great burst of humble happiness. Thanks all, I'm motivated for at least 2 more years
