We've had several release specific threads but I figure it's probably time to start up our own thread so we can more easily keep you up to date on our new and upcoming releases.

Here's our newest release a Relic Knight version of Kisa. Painted by the talented chaps at Golem Studios.

Kisa is available now at the Soda Pop Store

Thanks guys!
Deke

Not what I was expecting from the title.

The Catbot looks good, the rider less so.

The furry community will go wild when they see this!

IIRC Relic Knight is the specific name for the line of minis

The base looks too small imo

This might be an opticle illusion due to the waist being too big. I'm pretty sure that you could still fit some internal organs in there, trim it down a bit so it's all spine and it'd be good.

Looking good Deke!

Quick question though: on the store page, the Kisa model is described as being metal and resin, but it initially looks like it's all resin...

Or is the staff metal, hard to tell on my monitor.

[Soda Pop Miniatures] Super Dungeon Explore Preorders pg.2  @ 2011/07/07 16:37:33

Post by: terrainguy

I believe the Relic (Cat Mech) is all resin and Kisa and Scratch (girl and kitty cypher) are all metal. Honestly I haven't opened mine yet to check (and don't handle that end of production). I'll check tonight to make sure that is correct though. She looks all resin in the bare sculpt pictures because the whole image was greyscaled since the multiple mediums the sculptor works in can be distracting and make it hard to see detail in a photo.

How big is catbot? Would it make a good thunderwolf counts as or is it the wrong size?

That's a 50mm base it is standing on so he's good size. I'll see if I can get mine assembled this weekend and take some size pics.

I like the catbot thing but the main beast is pretty meh.

I don't know what its is but the whole mini looks flat to me, maybe the paint job isn't doing it justice either?

It just doesn't seem 'wow'.

Lookin good, and I figured this'd inspire a rash of new thunderwolves. Thinking of doing that myself too, really.

You guys are coming to GenCon this year, right? Really looking forward to seeing this and the Super Dungeon Explore box.

As with a lot of these threads, people need to consider that the catgirl model IRL is about as tall as one of her greaves in the photo.

There's a limit to how much "pop" and "wow" can be crammed into such a small figure.

The cat is a little more cartoony than the concept art, which is slightly disappointing. Only slightly, though, as it's still pretty cool.

Proportions aside, since she fits nicely into the anime aesthetic of the rest of the range, there's something not quite right about Kisa's jawline. I think it's partly the apparent lack of bottom teeth... But the face just looks a little off, and misses the mischievous look of the concept, which unfortunately spoils the piece overall for me, as the face is such an important focal point.

other than having one for my set, I would love to use the mecha for an alternative Bjorn the Fell-Handed conversion...

Post by: Wehrkind

Insaniak nails it for me: Her face is really missing the mischievous expression, and along with her left hand leaves me wondering "what is going on there?" If you look at just her face and left arm, it sort of looks like she is trying to convey that she is choking.

The little cat looks a bit off too, almost like a small dog or fox, but it might just be the angle and paint.

I'm not convinced by the giant scissors. The "Mike" backpack is fun. The skirt might be a little bit short.

The second one is so not a gundam space marine! I don't like the garden parasol weapon but it could easily be replaced.

Hasami just has me wondering what on earth is going on, but in a...potentially good way? I like the look of it, absurdity and all, but I have no clue what the model could possibly be used for. Her backpack is pretty cool though, and the gigantic scissors, crazy though they may be, could be pretty interesting. Color me intrigued.

Navarre looks pretty promising. Are those two jet engines strapped to his back? The angle's a bit weird on them, and I can't really tell if the one is attached to his arm or his back...I'd assume his back for the sake of symmetry though.

Last month we debuted four new models for Relic Knights at Gencon and PAX. Now all four models are available at the Soda Pop Store.

Upon enrollment most novices at the Doctrine Academy undergo something of an identity crisis. Young and typically on their own for their first time, the vaunted halls of Esper academia can prove intimidating if not outright frightening. Most novices soon embrace the companionship and camaraderie of their fellow students and begin to adjust to the life of studying to become a Doctrine Codifier. Hasami is not “most” novices though. Instead Hasami seems to feed on isolation, haunting the shadowed halls and forgotten libraries within the sprawling academy. When approached she displays a sharp tongue for peer and teacher alike. If pressed the air gains a metallic tang and her wand morphs into an enormous pair of scissors, proving that it is not only her words that can cut.

Second son of the hereditary governorship of the planet, Garron’s Reach, Navarre was given to paladin orders of The Six Peers immediately upon his birth. Ensuring that he may never lay claim to his elder brother’s birthright. Placed with the Order of the Shattered Sword, life as a paladin is all he has ever known. It was his privilege to train the young Relic Knight, Sebastian Cross, even as it is an honor to fight by his side today. Navarre exemplifies the title of paladin. His rugged, pragmatic approach to battle has carried his order to victory against every type of threat imaginable. As the Dark Space Calamity grows and a terrified populace looks increasingly to the paladin orders for protection, Navarre’s steadfast guidance will help guide them to the path of safety.

Nozuki is an active deity. Not content guide his followers from afar his will is ever present in the minds of the Noh race. In many ways the Noh’s strict martial discipline is to counter the Hydra God’s influence. To succumb fully to Nozuki’s demands drives a Noh warrior into a feral frenzy of hatred, battlelust, and spite. These are the Noh Berserkers, called “Kyoujin” or "The Unchained" in the Noh’s own tongue. Imprisoned separately so they do not kill one another; they slumber through feverish nightmares within the bowels of the dragon fleets waiting to be awakened. Waiting to be unleashed. The Noh’s favored method of deploying berserkers is to open a small dimensional rift inside the defensive perimeter, allowing the berserkers to spill into the very heart of the enemy. The effect is catastrophic. Shrieks of terror mingle with roaring battle cries heralding the Noh charge. To the Noh, there is no sweeter symphony.

Zineda & Spite
Traditionally priestesses of the Hydra God, Nozuki, strive to ensure their neutrality as Nozuki’s voice. Allowing them to serve as arbitrators between the eight Noh Dragon Fleets. In accordance to her role as High Priestess, Zineda continues this custom. Yet her true loyalty is hidden from no one. It is well known that she frequents the bed chamber of the Warlord, Mamaro To. Just as it known that the two harbor a burning resentment towards the Relic Knight, Kasaro To, and his favored status in Nozuki’s eyes. While they would never openly confront Kasaro, Zineda is well known for her murderous schemes and machinations for power. Far from discouraging such infighting among his highest servants Nozuki welcomes and encourages the strife. Such adversity breeds strength and the Hydra God has no mercy for the weak.

I gotta say, I'm digging the new pieces. I'm not sure what the heck I could do with Zineda, but I know I want one!

Seriously though, she's a great translation from concept art to the finished piece (great job on the paint, too).

Just about the only one that I have any quibble with is the Noh Berzerker: his ornamented loincloth seems a bit too solid, especially compared to the art. Overall a fine mini, but there is just something off to my eyes about his stance...

They were running demos at GenCon, and selling decks of the cards that the game is played with. They had a pretty basic rules pamphlet with very minimal fluff included with that. It seemed fairly solid from what I could tell, but I do hope a proper book comes out at some point. There's definitely some things that could at least use some clarification.

As I imagined, thank you for clarifying this. The way I see it I would rather see at TTGN the big anticipated SDE pre order announcement directing things to Sodapop rather than Cmon. But when I read at cmon that the ltd mini at preorder was, and I quote

"With this pre-order, you will receive a Limited Edition Candy and Cola miniature absolutely free, only available as a pre-order item from CoolMiniOrNot!"

I was a bit unsure what was going on.
Again best of luck with sales.

I really don't know from what forums you come from but he actually expressed a opinion totally on topic about the GAME we are talking about here, thats considerably more than I can say from you... So yes he was polite expressed a quick opinion and thats much more appreciated than your constant search for conflicts...

I think Sodapop game is going to be a huge hit and its really a joy to see so many new games this year... Super dungeon explore, Puppet wars, Gears of war, Dreadfleet etc etc... What a crazy year.

I think SDE has a anime edge and thats very cool and from the reports I've read its more fun to play than IMO its great contender the WYRD Puppet wars one so It will be interesting to see how these games evolve.

My intention isn't to start a conflict; I don't think there's any need to reference GW or Dreadfleet here. They have no bearing on the announcent of this game.

Agree. Don't forget all the D&D dungeon crawlers Wizards released this year too. I'm sure the Drizzt one will be a hit.

I'll assume you haven't played either of the games, but the consesus from a competely unofficiall poll I took at GenCon indicated that Puppet Wars was, on the whole, disappointing. SDE, on the other hand, received really high praise (we happened to see a student my wife teaches and her family, and the entire family LOVED SDE).

I'm still a bit miffed about how long the game got pushed back--mostly because my wife was interested in playing it-- but am still looking forward to it very much.

It was SUPPOSED to be available for sale at GenCon, though. Then at GenCon we were told that Pre-Orders should arrive the first week of September. Then I received a confirmation stating my copy was shipping and should arrive by Sept 15. Then I got the email saying it was pushed back until the 2nd week of November. That's when I requested a refund. I had no idea if it would continue to get delayed. That was my biggest issue.

I'm still going to buy a copy. I'm also very excited for the Relic Knights official rules. The situation was just very Duke Nukem 3Dish... that's all.

Anyone that tried the game before... is it complex? would it be something an 11 year old kid could play? Or would they lack the attention span to pick it up and just go play with their Wii's instead?

Looking for a good xmas present for my nephew, he's pretty smart (I think) but a game like 40K will be too much for him especially even though he always seems interested in my models.. trying to find a good intro-to-wargames kind of game for him to start with and play with his friends and slowly turn into nerd like me. Also, I get the idea this game won't have as much scantly-clad girls in it like their other models? seems more kid-friendly from the brief glimpses I had...

While the repeated delays suck, it's not that uncommon for a new product, particularly when there are a bunch of disparate components that all have to come together. Sounds like they at least did a pretty good job of keeping everyone informed as to what was going on...

Exactly. Catalyst Game Labs went through this with the BattleTech Introductory Boxed set, with several months of delays. At the most recent GenCon they went through it again with their Leviathans boxed set. FFG had some delays with their 40K RPG products.

These sorts of things are normal... and comparing them to Duke 3D is a mighty exaggeration.

Yeah I haven't played any of those but have been keeping track on both for some time now... Gen con reports etc. We european chaps still cant get our hands on both games... Wyrd one was to be released a couple weeks ago? But still on pre order and Sodapop one also still on pre order.
From the distant reviews I managed to see that one of the games has some of the coolest minis released and the other has the better rules and boards etc, so I'm going to struggle a lot before I make the final decision.

As for delays, well I think that a company of the size and young age of Sodapop venturing himself into the world of the so expensive plastic production really complicates making accurate timing estimates... I always take my hat to these companies that have the talent and the courage to create such professional games and minis.

There is a limited edition adventurer model, based on their Candy mascot figure.

It is not clear if this applies to US orders only.

I am really excited for this game. I live in Australia. Will I get the pre-order bonus miniature, or is that for US orders only.

If you preorder through our website then yes you'll definitely get the miniature. We understand that shipping is expensive to our nonUS customers (the box clocks in at almost 5lbs), because of that Candy and Cola will be available seperately on our website after the launch of the game, in addition to pre-orders.

We are also making it available to retailers during the preorder period, so inquire with your local game store, they should be getting notification of this program shortly.

The Puppet Wars minis are indeed very cool; the gameplay just really left a lot to be desired. I'd totally buy some of the minis if they offered them in blisters, but not in the present boxed set format.

As for SDE playability - An 11 would absolutely love this game, especially if you introduce him to some old skool Zelda too. My wife, who isn't a huge gamer, LOVED this game at GenCon, and learned the rules very easy. Further, there are video game buttons on the cards, so I imagine a lot of kids will be able to relate to it even more due to that.

Will Candy and Cola be available for a WHILE on the website, or just for "as long as the figures last"? I have the game on order already, but not from Soda Pop directly. But, me want the chibi Cola!

And.. are the figures that got released earlier as nifty promos the same scale and the same figure that the game contains?

Ok, ordered. Hopefully it won't take too long to get copies to the UK, so they can send it to me in Australia.

Very round about way to do things I know...

Candy and Cola will be available for a while on the website. You should have plenty of opportunity to get yourself one.

Scale of the promos is a bit tricky of a question. If you're referring to our con exclusive promo models that were available over a year ago at Gencon and PAX then the answer is "no". Those models were just promo items and are larger than the actual game pieces. If you're referring to the metal models we had available for sale over the last year so that you could play the demo then "yes" the scale is the same.

There will definitely be expansions of different types -- models, gameplay, etc but right now we're still focused on delivering the initial experience to everyone. All in good time!

The Druid may shapeshift into Angry Bear for one action point (and vice versa) provided there is enough room to fit his base.

I was mainly asking about the metal models over the last year.. so that is nice.

Are they the same as the characters in the box in plastic?

Whoa! Looks awesome... and just in time for Christmas

I dearly hope you don't run out, as I'll be trying to get my wife interested in getting me this for the holidays (hoping she might try to play it with me, too).

I am really psyched for it! I didn't realize there even was a druid, turning into a bear sounds awesome (is there a model?).

I'm guessing it's still the same general idea as was showcased before, a band of explorers fighting a lot of rat-like things?

Also, way to go with the plastic and keeping the cost down . Look attractively priced for what's included! Is 50 miniatures an actual 50 chibi-type models?

Looking forward to more pics and thanks for addressing any of these questions

At GenCon they had the first proposed expansion on display. I have a picture of it somewhere in my GenCon photos, and I'll try and find it. Anyways, it contained IIRC 3 new heroes and new bad guys that looked like the koopa troopa from Mario, on their shells looked grown from rock. They were very cool looking.

Overall the rules are a bit chunky in the read through but once you start playing it makes sense and is frakking awesome!

I love this game and am already excited about expansions.
The models are excellent, and the rules seem to flow well

On the 'Rune of the Sage' - There is no spoon!
On the 'Intimidating Axe' - I wouldn't do that if I were you.
On the 'Rune of Rage' - RAAAAARGH!
On the 'Berserker's Helm' - ANGRY!
On the 'Elfin Boots' - Nothing slows me down when I wear my dancin' shoes!
On the 'Rune of Defence' - Stop hitting me!
On the 'Rune of Focus' - I think I can. I think I can.
On the 'Rune of the Stray' - Nice kitty.

This game is adorable...

So, this game is awesome. My question is, has anyone heard if any expansions are going to be like the game, or are they going to be individual miniatures, in metal or resin, making the expansions much more expensive.

I'm personally looking forward to making some 3D terrain dungeons. Possibly using 40mm square bases as tiles, and real terrain around them so that the rooms/corridors are enclosed.

The box says for ages 3 and up. I would probably not play it with someone that young given the large number of small peices. An 8 year old should be perfectly suited to play this game, it really is alot of fun.

They used to include 1 resin chest with each blister of the metal heroes on their store but it looks like they took down those models for purchase. I have a couple extra stocked up with me but I'm think we're going to have to wait for an expansion (or pick up a second copy) if we want any more chests.

Edit: Mimics were included with the Kobold Dragon priest model, if I recall correctly.

Game was real fun. The models looked better than any other board game I've seen short of Dread Fleet and there were a lot more of them for less dough (unless you count rocks and stuff).

I think it's really good but the problems I had were:
Some of the more obscure abilities are a little unclear (like if you roll a heart, can the rogue use her lucky ability to turn it into a potion)
The map tiles need more clear lines showing walls. We had an argument over whether a something that looked like a railing over a pit was actually a wall or not.
The cards feel really flimsy.
The game seems very stacked against there heroes due to the amount of monsters that can just jam them up. The leads to the boss coming out quickly before enough of the spawning points can be removed and he gets an extra turn for every one left. When he has four attacks per turn and can fly over obstacles this can one shot heroes without much recourse. We only played with three heroes so with larger games this might not be an issue.
The game only comes with one boss and miniboss type. It would have been nice if another was included. I assume there will be more to get but for a starter it felt a little bit lacking in variety.

Overall we had a lot of fun though and it's really cool for a first attempt at a game and while I'm not super into the anime style it was a nice change from generic fantasy that we see in almost every other game.

Overall I agree with some of your comments, but hopefully heres some rules things I think you are missing:

Once the boss gets awoken he gets one additional activation if any spawn points are left. So unless the heros can move really fast chances are the boss is getting two activivations per turn. Not one activation per spawn point left, check pg 28. It says "one additional time per round" not per spawn point.

The wall thing although wierd is actually clear, it says that if it is not a square or a hallway(which is just another square near the board connections) then it is a wall. So that green pit on the tile blocks line of sight just like any other wall. Pg 13 under "wall"

The rogue can change a heart into a potion and vice versa if she rolls it, like a healer gets two hearts if they roll it. not if the druid rolls it and gives it to the rogue or whatever. It says rolls on the card not gets.

These may be incorrect but At least thats what I gathered based on the ten or so games Ive got in so far and having re-read the somewhat confusing rulebook a couple of times and had others read the rules to get a different perspective on what they think they are trying to say. Becuase at the end of the day the rule book does need a little help.

I also do agree the cards could have been a bit sturdier, especially since they are the only location many of the rules exsist. If they are lost or damaged so is your rules set. I already got all clear sleaves for the heros and monsters and am going t buy more for the loot and treasure decks next time Im at a store. I also think some of the dice are little bit lightly printed on some faces and I actually got a couple deformed ones. Other then that though the models are excellent, I think the boards are good, and the game itself is super fun to play. I have enjoyed this game so much actully that I already want an expansion to give that extra flexibility that the consul will need to keep up with all the awesome options the heros get.

Malfred, did you miss my post in between? I didn't really start it relevantly I suppose. I'll try to confirm the size difference next week if no one else can confirm and you can wait.

It's no big deal. I have painted big'uns and new plastics that
have yet to see paint. I just wasn't sure if they ever released
the metals as small'uns.

I was curious because it sounds like some of the posters who
want the board game also think they need to buy the metal
sculpts, so I just wanted to clarify what was out there vs.
what comes in the box.

Thanks for replying, though.

Haven't played it yet, but I was at Dragonmeet in London over the weekend, and my son got a game of Super Dungeon Explore while I was running Dragon Warriors. He's barely stopped talking about SDE since! It would be on his Xmas list, but according to the guys running the demo (Esdevium), all 500 copies shipped in to the UK from the first print run are sold out already!

I can confirm this. If you were an extremely early-adopter, your metal figures are probably 50% larger than the plastic figs with the board games. These were a small, short run. However, there was a general release of metal figures that are the same size as the plastic figures. This was a much larger run. If you bought your metals in a shop, they are probably this same size as the board game figs.

Are the cards that come with this game regular sized (Playing cards, Magic cards sized etc.) or of a different size?

Regular sized.

Goodie, saves me the bother of hunting down odd-sized card sleeves.

Ixquic wrote:Game was real fun.

Oh cool that boss thing alone makes a big difference, thanks.

Another question: If one player rolls a heart or potion, does every other player get to spend it or does only one person get to benefit? The rules say you can spend hearts even if you didn't roll them but I wasn't sure if "spending" a heart stopped other from doing it.

It's a heart you can allocate to any one person on the team, so you can decide who needs it the most. That's my understanding based on the demo I did, anyway.

Got ourselves a copy today, nice stuff indeed! Was a bit disappointed about the size of the adventurers until I saw the ANGRY BEAR mini. Damn, just damn. Even more so with the mini bosses. Can't wait to give it a try this Sunday.

Asked for it for Christmas from the folks (who, despite my adult status, still insist on receiving Christmas requests... I guess my asking for a game of toy soldiers isn't helping change that )

One problem that I have with SDE is that I have no idea how I'm going to store all those models.

Thankfully - and no I'm not trying to sound like an infomercial - Battlefoam has just come to the rescue. I saw this at TTGN not 2 minutes ago.

I think this may be my first foray into the world of Battlefoam.

Anyone painted them up yet?

I have my chibi heads in a row, and I'm looking over this plastic.

Got the minis, and Candy is pretty cool.

Whats it say when I'm digging something that looks like this.....

All in all very satisfied with the game, its a gem in the rough, but if you can get the plastics squared away I'm a fan, and the additions are eagerly awaited.

If it wasn't clear- The current metals are on par with the game adventures with a little bit of a difference with the slottabases.

Thinking of mounting them ALL on slottabases...

what do you guys think?

This guy (not me) did an amazing job on his set, and somehow has gotten the whole shebang done already.

That does indeed look perfect... if I get the game for Christmas (fingers crossed) I'll probably invest in that! Nice that it fits in the box, too.

Paint jobs like that make me want to buy this game. However, the realist in me knows full well they would be sitting on my to-do list for years waiting for the time to paint them. The pessimist in me knows only too well I would never be able to paint to the level required to do the mini justice. The accountant in me wonders if I can stretch to commissioning someone who can paint to that level. The husband in me knows that my wife would flay me alive if I ever did pay someone to do that...

The skill is amazing but the faces on those characters are terrifying. They look like they are out of a horror movie.

Gotta say I agree with you on this one. Everything else looks superb, but I think the faces are way too heavily shadowed. Anime tends to be a pretty simple, flat, cell-shaded sort of look, and those proportions with more realistic shading really throw the faces off.

Looks like they are getting mounted, painted, and squared away.

Sweet looking sculpts, thats for sure.

By and By-Candy Cola is friggin awsome

My little chibis are on deck for the weekend. woot woot!!!

I'll start with the board, but there is a foam cored one in my future. Get the foam styro board, then the dungeon parts ala space hulk, next....

Need to find out if they sell more of those game enemy figures, I could really do with some more of those.

I've noticed that too - as awesome as they are the humans do look like they suffer from Progeria. It would be easily fixable/avoidable though, and it gives me a good idea on how to start painting them overall (not that mine will turn out anywhere near as good as his did ...)

Before the game officially released they did a bunch of the models in metal, most of the non-dragon consul models were produced, I'm not sure how easy they are to still find though. Your best bet might be to pick up a second box of the game.

trolling ebay etc.. you can get the metal hordes for about $4 a model.. $11.99 for a blister of 3 Gougers, or 7.99 for a pair of Flingers.. etc.. the Priest and Boo Booty runs about $9..

Adding it up.. much cheaper to invest in a second game, and maybe part out the Hero figs and keep the cards as a needed duplicate set in case of accidents.

Plus you would end up with bunches of dice.. !!!!

That's the conclusion I came up with, as well. Best just to get a second copy of the game for all the extras you want and sell off those you don't to make up some of the money you spent on it.

I also recall chat somewhere that the original metal models were a bit larger than the plastics from the game.

It's a great game and I'm really looking forward to expansions with Undead and Demons (see the Paladin ability). Chibi zombies and skeletons for the win !! I wonder if I can run one as a character ???

The first metal models that they only sold at cons are a larger scale.

The metal models sold in "boosters" packs are the same scale as the plastics, but came out smaller some how.
