So Im ( WOULD BE REMOVED BY MOD THIS IS A PREMPTIVE MOD BLOCK) and My dad was driving me back from the dentist (Barces checkup) and he is cursing at the crappy music Snoop Dog, Eminem, Ladygaga( She has SOME Ok songs most of her old stuff was aight) Justin bieber the list goes on and on and on. He turns the radio off and pops in some stones. Well the record sucked so he switched to lynyrd skynyrd. WTF HAppened to origanal Good music? I mean there is SOME Out there but it is slowly fading. It was like someone hit a light switch. Im (See first age Post) I wasn't alive in the prime of country and rock and im white( Verge of redneck) but I see white frineds(Not to be racist I have black friends) Dropping like flies to rap music and Bull Sh%t like that. MY white friends are trying to corrupt me. Im supposed to like this and this but this music sucks and this is in. No Im going to be the guy who goes against the current.
Don't worry OP, I also gave up on any hopes music would improve after Soulja Boy showed up. Hell, I even started searching for music in other languages to escape it.
So grats I guess? You never had to "rebel" against the music everyone else seems to like more or even go along with it. Like something because you like it, not because someone else does.
I also don't see what the ethnicity of your friends has to do with this. If they like crappy music they like crappy music, regardless of if they're white/black/yellow/maroon.
Albatross wrote:Your 'white friends' are 'falling' to rap music? Like it's some sort of primitive art-form, suitable only for black people?
Wow, you really ARE a redneck....
I don't know so much about White people or Black people, but nobody deserves to have to listen to Rap.....
If everyone looks through rose tinted glasses about Music, why is it that all the new songs I'm hearing suck compared to the old songs my local radio is still playing, and all they are playing is the terrible songs from yesteryear?
If even one person enjoys a song, you are capable of enjoying it yourself if you try to find the groove. That aside, some things will have more effort or "artistry" behind them, but people are allowed to like what they want. Also, quit sounding like you're 12.
Albatross wrote:Your 'white friends' are 'falling' to rap music? Like it's some sort of primitive art-form, suitable only for black people?
Wow, you really ARE a redneck....
No, I have Black friends who hate rap and whites friends who Act like Eminem when i say falling i mean filling their ipods with only rap music while delteing EVERYTHING else. And don't talk to me about racism I go to a 80% minorty school and I get more Bull Sh*t than any of them. I said white Friends where it in all honsety should have been friends (Asians Hispanic, etc etc) and a majority of my black friends have always liked rap soooo....
First off, check your bloody spelling, that message hurt my brain somehow.
Secondly, so? If they are your friends, just tell them it's not your box of chocolates and they shouldn't bother trying to make you interested, or, if it bothers you that much, get new friends?
Every age has crap music, you just need to wade through the filth to get to the shinies!
Listen to some metal, like Hammerfall, Rhapsody of fire, Metallica, Nightwish, Alestorm(if ye like pirates), etc.

2) load up grooveshark or another internet music provider

I'm just glad it doesn't have the exact same theme as nearly every pop song, sex.
Most radio songs now are about "the club." For every song about sex there are two about the mushy parts of love and even then there are plenty of songs whose central theme is something else entirely. Old punk specifically had a lot to do with rebelling or drug usage though. Pop isn't dirty.

How can you not know who Katy Perry is? She's most known for being that girl that looks like a Photoshop job of Zooey Deschanel's face on a pornstar's body. Who interestingly is really called Katy Hudson but changed it to not be confused with the actress with the (almost) same name.

There is plenty of good rap music at the moment, personally i am not a fan but Tyler the Creator / Odd future Wolfgang are pretty brave/unique musically and lyrically.
Plus don't be bashing Eminem, his first album is great, the lyrics are actually hilarious in a totally puerile and reprehensible way.
Oh and you haven't heard garbage music 'till you've worked in a supermarket. Their playlists are compiled by Satan himself. Suffice it to say th songs are so bad Enrique Englesias' 'escape' is IMO the pick of the bunch

Gene Simmons IS that full of gak...but you have to look at things from his perspective .
During the 70's..a lot of "Mainstream music" was ( arguably) very dull...particularly live concerts.( Hence the punk backlash)...
KISS...in it's early years introduced an element of showmanship and theatrics into musical performance that was seldom seen prior to them.

Exactly, there where plenty of bands with more musical talent then KISS...but Performance wise...KISS blew them away...
That's one of the reasons that in the 80's you had so many bands copying KISS' theatrics...KISS filled stadiums and made millions ...these other bands wanted to do the same.
No offence Soldarin but that first song you link + the video looks and sounds like a Tim and Eric's Awesome Show parody of modern music. Which isnt necessarily a good thing.

They weren't really mainstream though, all of those bands got extensive Airplay on FM when AM still ruled the radio. Now they're mainstream because the mainstream music of the 70's (pop & disco) cannot hold up at all in today's world compared to those bands you listed. Black Sabbath was the red headed step child of Hard Rock, Rolling stone called their first 3 albums "trash" effectively and it was because they didn't play the game with the media, and suffered because of it. Look at Rush, they weren't mainstream until very recently and still aren't for the most part. Any "mainstream" Pink Floyd fan can name a handful of songs, a true dedicated fan can rattle off Syd Barret era music like a champ. Jethro Tull was a side act at best for a lot of people, even though they freaking rule. Deep Purple was one of the best bands of the era (along with Rainbow). BOC was the gak. KISS was cheesy but they could still make pretty decent music.
Here's one of my favorite Black Sabbath Tracks, completely and almost lost to history...almost:

That's so wrong, hip-hop, true hip-hop is an infusion between instrumentals and beats. I'm pretty sure most of those bands (except Rush) were pretty popular back in the 70's at least with the general public. Also mainstream has nothing to do with being critically acclaimed or fans only knowing a
handful of songs it's a word that can be used to describe a dominant, well known group (it has several definitions) which I think bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc would have been in the 70's.

Thick as a Brick, by Jethro Tull got to number 1 one the record charts. Close to the Edge, by Yes, got to 3. Rush has more consecutive Gold/Platinum than anyone other than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
I think it's safe to say, they were pretty big. Just because they got beat out by disposable Pop songs on the radio back then, doesn't mean they weren't popular.

Well being Canadian, I didn't know if they were popular outside their home country. Thanks for the clarification.
As far as genres go, I'll listen to anything. (I do have my preferences though in Rock, Metal, and Industrial)
however, I really rarely ever listen to music pre 2000's
I have a whole theory on this... *ahem*
before the public had access to the internet, the only way to get music from an artist was to buy an album, whether it was a vinyl, cassette, or a CD. And thus the only way for artist and bands to sell was to produce a good album. You heard a single on the radio, (or saw a music video on MTV) and you liked the single. Guess what? now you went out and bought the album for that single, and from there, you now have the full album. If you didn't enjoy the album, obviously you wouldn't go out and buy another album from the same artist. If you did like the album, then you may very well consider buying the next album that artist puts out.
Now comes in the internet. Artists and bands still get their music playing on the radio and the tv. what has changed is how people get that music. (Keep in mind that I'm going to be talking about legitimate forms of downloading music such as rhapsody and itunes) No longer does anyone have to buy a full album, if you hear a song on the radio, or watch the music video on MTV, now you can just download that one song you heard and enjoyed.
here's where my theory kicks in, because people generally don't have to buy a whole album from an artist/band and can instead buy individual songs, I think that artists caught onto that and produce good singles, and not so much good albums anymore. I remember hearing a song from Paramore* and though it was cool. I borrowed the album from a friend of mine and in all honesty, I though most of the album was just sh%t. So there you go, that's my theory as best as I can explain it. Artists no longer have to produce good albums to sell, only good singles to sell. You obviously get more songs in an album than in one single, and that's about all I have to say
feel free to challenge what I said, agree with it, or comment
I probably lost some credibility for saying I listened to them...
FITZZ wrote:

I think that this is really untrue. There are a lot of early punk bands that were just like pop bands; writing songs to make them money. But the majority of early punk didn't sound like the Ramones or the Sex Pistols (like the Fall, Wire, Flipper, Pere Ubu, Wipers, Stooges, Gang of Four, Suicide, the list could go on and on).
The only good pop music came before the early 70's, before record companies turned it into a commodity to make money. For every terrible mainstream band there are two awesome underground ones (and probably 20 awful underground ones). The bad thing about music today is you really have to put time into finding the good stuff, you're not just going to hear it on the radio.

Anyone who likes tasteful rock music likes Rush, however, they have a couple of songs that have crept into the musical zeitgeist due to Guitar Hero. Now, I am not a huge fan of Guitar Hero, it's a fun party game, but it has also made a bunch of cool kid, poseur fans of awesome bands (like the foul abomination of a movie called "Across The Universe" made a bunch of poseur Beatles fans, they act like they've been fans for years when they had only seen the movie a few months ago and act like you're latching onto the movie, while the opposite is true, this actually happened to me) like Rush. You'll see kids try to be cool and song drop "Tom Sawyer" and "YYZ" like they've listened to every track on Moving Pictures multiple times. Bunch of bullshitters. I have every Rush Studio album and have been meaning to get all of their live albums. But some kid acts like he knows more about them just because he's heard a handful of songs. Call me after you've listened to "The Necromancer" you rookies.
Another band that get zero respect from the so called "experts" that pick Rock 'N' Roll HOF members is Grand Funk Railroad. They had their first 10 albums go Platinum, no other American band beat them too that.
/ rant
Obviously you'll have more exposure to them since you're in Canada. But here's the States, I only know a few hardcore Rush fans. They've kept their Cult Band Status quite well. There's no denying their talent and sheer awesomeness, but a lot of people don't truly know them, just a couple songs.
^But most people only know popular musicians for a few songs, that's how it is.
even the best selling bands have a much smaller fanbase that knows most of their work. Granted in some cases that's still pretty big, but, you know.
Take Genesis for example. Ask a random person to name one of their songs. I doubt many will know more than 2 or 3.
