Post by: Manchu

When I joined up on Dakka, I tried to pick out a cool username and couldn't really come up with anything. So I just ended up using "Manchu." But over the years, I've noticed some of you Dakkanauts have undeniably awesome usernames. So I thought I'd give you my top five and ask you guys which usernames you guys think are cool. Feel free to tout your own name; arrogant bastards are welcome, too, as long as their usernames are cool! This is the OT, after all.

Number Five: Kanluwen

First off, it's unique. Is it meaningless? Does it mean something in a language I don't know but can kind of recognize? The trick is that you can't tell -- it's evocative. This is the same trick that George Lucas used on every generation since 1977 with the name "Obi-wan Kenobi." Something about that name, which as far as I know is nonsense, has the air of a samurai general or a zen master -- or, in the case of Obi-wan Kenobi himself, pretty much both rolled up into one. "Kanluwen" has similar connotative value to me: it makes me think of Mortal Combat (Liu Kang) and so has the requisite implication of asskickery, but the "wen" part kind of evens it out and puts me back in mind of zen. One day, I will run a session of the Star Wars Saga Edition campaign and name a Jedi NPC "Master Kanluwen.":

Number Four: Dances with Squats

"I don't want to trivialize the tragic history of Native Americans, but GW royally screwed the Squats." That's the sort of line I can imagine Steve Carell delivering if it ever turned out that he was into Warhammer 40k. (In fact, now that I think of it, this user is most likely actually Steve Carell trying to hide his true identity behind a Union Jack.) This poster is either not active anymore or doesn't post very often at all. But whenever I come across this name, no matter how many times I see it, it always always always makes me laugh. You've got to admire that kind of staying power -- and that, in and of itself, is a real tribute to the poor Squats themselves. Despite their ridiculous name and harsh treatment at the hands of Nottingham, those tough little space beardies remain in our hearts even to this day . . . even if they're really mostly a joke even to this day. If you ever find yourself taking the GrimDark a bit too seriously . . .

Number Three: Cannerus_The_Unbearable

It goes without saying that this is the perfect name for a Chaos Lord. The real question is: dedicated to which of the Ruinous Powers? For those who know the poster, the answer is obviously Slaanesh but I'd argue the name could stand on its own as a Nurgle-worshiper's sobriquet: their putrescent hides and disease-ridden bowels certainly make them unbearable enough. Let me be honest with you guys: I've actually thought about this for a while now. The best answer I've come up with is that the character must indeed be a Slaaneshi devotee, gifted by that archfiend with blindingly good looks, making him "unbearable" like how the sun is too bright to look at, but also immense cruelty and sadism, making him utterly unbearable as a personality. A username that I overthink to that degree must be awesome.

Number Two: Morathi's Darkest Sin

Even if you don't know who Morathi is, this username will still sound pretty badass to you. Of course, if you do know who Morathi is then the impact is even greater. I've always wondered if the implication is supposed to be that the poster himself is the result of whatever most terrible sin Morathi committed or if the name is just supposed to come out of nowhere and seduce your imagination. It's certainly not a conventional username, especially with the leading possessive, and that right there is enough to get your attention. This is a username that could inspire a good short story -- how many of us can really say the same about our own handles? Honestly, if it was Morathi's worst moral transgression it must have been pretty frikkin bad indeed. For a long, long time I thought I'd never see a more original and evocative username.

That is, until I saw . . . well, let's give it a little more time.

Stay tuned for the Number One slot!

Don't mean to be a tease but I want to really invest some time into explaining why my all-time favorite username is truly the best I've ever seen. In the meantime, what are some cool usernames you guys have come across on Dakka? Do you have a top five or even a top ten? Does anyone's username give you ideas for creating wargame-themed fiction/background ideas?

I'm not going to lie

This is rather amusing.

Gwar! Was always one that amused me to see and was in fact the first poster I saw on this sight when I looked it up.

Ooh, cool thread idea I think the best names are two words that sound really dull separately, but when kitbashed together have a nice sound to them.

My top five would be...

reds8n
Lunahound
Kid_Kyoto
Phototoxin
smurfwedge

I'm quite pleased I got Flashman (it's the first forum ever where nobody had it already), but you have to respect those who think up their own.

I tend not to divulge it in freindly places like this as it's often taken as a religious offence, when it is not meant as such. It's actually a quote from the comic Transmetropolitan all smashed into one word. I save the unexpurgated version for more personal environments. For example, it's my Steam username, where I'm unlikely to expose it to sensitive strangers.

I like Chowderhead. It has a very special meaning for me. It's both a nickname, an insult, and a hidden meaning inside it.

My friends across the pond call me "Chowderhead", as I come from a land known for it's chowder. This is also an insult, as in "Your head is full of chowder!".

Chowderhead is a hidden meaning, as well. I am a chowder addict, and people notice that my head is... Large, shall we say?

Yggsdrasil

- it's simple
- you don't have to think about how you pronounce it because it's just a mess of letters
- it is very evocative of a plague marine who's been so mutated and diseased that no matter what his name really is... it comes out sounding like "Yggsdrasil" (his name's probably really Jeffrey or something pedestrian like that)
- it has numerous, informal versions (Yggs, Yggsie, Yggszilla, Yggs-a-mania runnin' wild!)
- it sounds like a glob of puss or entrails sliding out of a mutated body... again, evocative of one of the armies of the owner

I ask you... what's not to like??

Clearly my combination of a general internet term for someone who deliberately posts provocatively on boards and a word that some immature 4-year olds may find funny is superior.

You're about to eat a succulent and tantalizingly delicious pie when BAM! A troll's head explodes out the top and grins up at you with wide eyes. Then it's time to get the spade.

Time for some friendly orange text. Let's keep the creepy necrophilia . . . um . . . on some other message board and the rest of these shenanigans ("stop with the off-topic chat guys" is also off-topic, by the way). As has been pointed out this is a thread about other people's username's being cool, although if you think your own is cool that's fine. But there is already a thread for explaining the meanings of our own usernames so please use that one instead if you want to explain your own username.

Kudos to those who have actually done top five or top ten lists. I like to see more of these and some explanation about why you like certain usernames. For me, it's all about connoting other ideas. A username that's just a username . . . well, my username does that much (hence not on my own top five or even top twenty really) -- but a username that you could dream up a whole character or even a story from is, IMO, what truly rocks.

There's another category of names that I always say in my mind one way but when I read them I'm totally off.

For example, with Mannahnin: in my head, it sounds like Man-a-hein.

And then there are the ones that I get mixed up with because of the spelling. Whenever I see "butlerthepug," I always mistake it for "butter the plug." *shudder*

The original was always the best. My favorite name I've seen on Dakka is probably infilTRAITORs. Why? Well, he was the first person to friend me on dakka :3 and more importantly, It's because I think his name perfectly encapsulated his army he had going at the time. His traitor force (Everyone should go look at it, it was so cool) was always so individual, and unique, and probably pretty sneaky.

My favorite to this day may well be plastictrees. Because it's something we all (mostly) have in common, but I would never have thought to identify with. IMO it simultaneously displays humor and humility, as well as being a wargaming/modeling hobby reference.

Kilkrazy is a classic. IIRC it's graffiti or an inscription on a space marine vehicle, from back in the Rogue Trader days. Back when the root concepts of 40k were crazier and grittier and darker and the humor was a bit different.

Doomthumbs sounds dirty/dangerous but also makes you feel guilty for having a filthy mind about a most likely innocent username. Then you see what he's actually been posting and you're dragged straight back into the gutter.

m.ike is a favorite of mine, can't explain why.

FITZZ is neat, and wins for his avatar.

Dreadnote

Stelek (He Who Shall Not Be Named)

Orkeosaurus

My fav though is probably MeanGreenStompa. He's one of my favorite posters, and he's so cool that he has a nickname for his screename. So Kudos MGS. Your avatar also rocks.

Cheers Manchu, glad to see it gave you pause for thought. I do have a new avatar on its way that will clarify my position somewhat, a few weeks out I'm hoping, I can't see the new one ever changing.

As to names that strike out to me...

1. Cheese Elemental - whats there not to like, its a elemental made out of cheese! After you vanquish it, you break out a baguette and do lunch.

2. MeanGreenStompa - Our very own Brian Blessed incarnate, always been a big fan of the name, mainly as a Ork player I am totally there with the awesome that is a mean Green Stompa.

3. Squilverine - I just love that image that comes into my head, some demented Squirrel gets it on with a Wolverine and the result, well is somewhat terrifying, a furry ball of death that wants your nuts.

4. Orkeosaurus - Always made me chuckle, like the 40K play on the old joke.

5. reds8n - I spent the longest time referring in my head that it was red s n, not picking up on the actual word play for about two years, although I am shamed to admit that. Love the name though.

Definetly have a list of my favorites.

1. Polonius
It sounds so regal and important! That name makes me feel like a king or duke is addressing his subjects.
2. Mannahnin
I've never understood the name, and it remains mysterious and elusive to me.
3. Some_Call_Me_Tim?
I love Monty Python, and that is definetly one of my favorite lines.
4. Frazzeled
What's there not to like?
5. Warmaster
Someone I game regularly. His alias is elegant, simple, and very descriptive. It invokes a lot of fear in me even to this day.

Its for proper football. Green Bay Wisonsin, home of the Green Bay Packers. The greatest team ever to grace the NFL, don't let the fact that they have only won 4 Superbowls distract you from the fact that they've won 13 championships and are the best players in the league.

Don't let the fact that there's no people there distract you. The just a magically always sold-out football stadium in the middle of nowhere. Go Packers.

Does this count as a form of subliminal messaging?

BUT! Sometimes its funny, because if the sentence ends just right it looks like they insult themselves. What a hooker!

5. Snord.
4. bugswarm.
3. Kingperson.
2. Mauleed

1. Abadabadoodon.

Yes, the first four are obscure enough that very few people here will remember them. Snord was the ying to my yang, bugswarm was a dick (but a clever dick), Kingperson was an always able ally and fellow Guard commander (and the name was funny) and Mauleed... was Mauleed! I shouldn't need to explain him.

But ol' Abby. Abby had the best name, and the first name to make me truly laugh out loud. It sums out his perfect sense of humour, and he was the person who always had me rolling with his cutting wit and biting cynicism.

Special runner up to Janthkin, MeanGreenStompa, Lil' Luna (LunaHound) and Waaagh_Gonads. I'd say Kyoto, but I remember when it was Kyoto Sensei...

Good first line for a limerick if it wasn't so politically incorrect
That and not a lot rhymes with tactics
So maybe it ain't that good...

It's workable.

A regular old Kraut from Dust Tactics,
Had some of the silliest antics.
He shot ducks as they flew,
With an MG42,
And often made inappropriate remarks in public?
...
...
...
Ah well, it was worth a shot.

Edit: Wait! I've figured it out!

A regular old Kraut from Dust Tactics,
Had some of the silliest antics.
He shot ducks as they flew,
With an MG42,
And thought that the British were spastics.

Nope, still not working.

Post by: Manchu

Haxshizah carefully studied the expression on her former master's purpling features as the old archon impotently writhed in her venomous grip.

"Even now, as the toxins bleed searing pain throughout your withered veins, you still do not fear me?" Her question was rhetorical. The old archon's visage plainly did not betray any hint of fear; rather, there was a certain bitter satisfaction. "Ah, pedantic unto the uttermost I see? And what tedious lesson am I to learn from your death?"

She heard a petulant anger in her own voice, spiting her triumph and echoing long centuries of frustration. Her erstwhile mentor had never really taken her seriously. There had been the requisite rewards, of course: grandiloquent titles, supple and obedient slaves, treasure houses brimming with what passed for wealth among their debased people. But he had never taken a single precaution against this day, the day when the upstart Haxshizah would seize all that he had ever won.

No, he had not lifted so much as finger against her. She knew he had never been behind any of the assassination attempts, the poisonings, the long list of betrayals among her inner circle. Killing him had been insultingly easy so far. It enraged her, robbed her of her rightful delight in this masterful coup. And yet, perhaps now she might teach him a lesson even if it came fatally late.

He underestimated her iniative, Haxshizah thought and the thought calmed her somewhat. He had desperately underestimated her and as she slowly crushed his venerable windpipe with her needle-tipped fingers, impatient of the Agoniser's thousand and one exotic toxins, she felt fulfilled. She could both hear and feel the subtle snapping of cartilage, fine wraithbone augments, and Dark Muses knew what else within the rejuvenated flesh of his throat. Now she was truly the master. The sudden crook at the left corner of her mouth might have generously been called a smile.

Shockingly, her vile contentment was mirrored in the old archon's dying features and she instinctively loosened her deadly grip. What ultimate treachery did his amusement belie? What terrible trap had she sprung even as she closed her fingers around final victory? Strangely, this fear particularly thrilled her. Perhaps the master had cared, after all. Perhaps he had thought better of her ambitions and capability than she knew and now she might finally have earned his notorious wrath.

"What is it, you decepit fool?" she hissed. He was beyond speech, she knew. The Agoniser had utterly destroyed his mind by now. But, seeing the perverse light shining from his innermost core, Haxshizah the upstart finally understood. The barbarous mon'keigh, in their brutal oversimplification, might have perceived what they stupidly called "love." She knew better; her people were too far advanced for "love." She recognized the glint in his millennia-old eyes for what it was: malevolent pride.

"What is it?" she pleaded, her voice suddenly ragged and wavering. "What is it . . . master?" But she already knew. It was his last act of dominance over her, his last imperious lesson. Of course he had planned for this moment; indeed, he had engineered it. In an act that was decadently self-indulgent even for the Dark Eldar, he had intentionally left himself open to her treason to impart this crucial precept to her, his chosen successor. "I see it, master, I understand."

He exhaled and a hundred centuries and more of scheming and murdering and conquering was suddenly and absolutely over. Her mind opened like a blossoming black rose against the impossible, forever twilight horizon of Commorragh. The master taught her thusly: power, duplicity, all carefully contrived deceptions and feints -- these things count for nothing in the end. Before She Who Thirsts all are but one thing: a fragile breath.

Number One: The Fragile Breath

It's true that I dreamt up the story of Haxshizah's ascendance for this thread to explain the power of that username, The Fragile Breath. But my imagination, like Haxshizah's, opened up to these insights when I first noticed that user's handle. Meditating on those three simple words, I felt like I finally had some real understanding of the Dark Eldar. I had never before been particularly fascinated by the "bad space elves" or had any desire to collect, paint, and play a Dark Eldar army. And yet the name "The Fragile Breath" convinced me that the Dark Eldar are a deeply interesting faction. Imagine that: a simple username with the power to make someone want to invest in an army they never considered before. Of course, Phil Kelly and Jess Goodwin gave that embryonic desire some real plausibility with their respective contributions to rules and models. But it's the name and the concepts that it inspires that drives me to seriously consider such an expensive course of action. Who knows whether I'll get around to building a Dark Eldar army or what shape this Kabal or Cult or Coven "of the Fragile Breath" might ultimately take. But one thing is for sure: if I do start playing Dark Eldar it will have been that username that caused it. Now that's a powerful name -- and that's why "The Fragile Breath" is number one on my shortlist of coolest DakkaDakka usernames.
