Ok then, Here we go: I am starting work on a Reaver titan I got second hand. The guy that I bought it from was a new father and since the baby and the titan were approximately the same size, it seemed reasonable to take the titan out of the stroller, and put the baby in. it came to me in the original bags, shipped inside a diaper box. It had never been painted or assembled, so I really got a steal on the price. Especially since it came with the Titan close combat arm, missile launcher, and melta gun.
Now, how to paint it?
After looking online, I decided that the standard blue/yellow that everyone seems to paint theirs was definately not for me. I don't know enough about titans to recognize the history behind the colour scheme (I generally play tau in apocalypse games, as railguns come in handy) so I came up with a colour scheme to suit my tastes. I decided on a dark green armor (British Green from Tamiya Color), with bleached bone or similar highlights and dwarf bronze trim. My girlfriend laughingly told me it would look like a leprechaun (obviously she believes her eldar are superior), and the name stuck. Leprechaunis Rex has been commissioned for the emperors service, and I could definately use any insight on how to get this project done.
Question #1: Detailed work I have noticed that most titans have large amounts of "blank" space on them. Specifically, their shin guards, torso and shoulder plates seem to be painted a flat colour, with no inspiring paintjobs. Is this because it will make the model look too "busy", or just because it is easier not to spend the time?
Question #2: Pinning and Painting I have been thinking that it might be better if i painted the entire model piece by piece, and then assembled and pinned once everything was done. this way I could be sure to get the entire model painted, instead of fiddling with a brush in nooks and hard to reach areas. Does this sound reasonable? I found an amazing looking website on assembling, <ref=http://www.theinnergeek.net/2008/08/reaver-titan-pt-1.html</a> but I don't know any articles on painting techniques or pinning.
Anyway, I am trying to paint a single piece every day (prime, paint, and finish), although it is proving difficult do restrain myself to doing just one.
Please leave any and all comments you have: any ideas are welcome!

This will be the most GLORIOUS leprechaun of all. Should make a giant shamrock that you can attach/detach for those important battles. For Question 2, if you're going to paint the inside, maybe make some way of the roof being detachable, so people can see inside it and admire it better.

Those feet are looking great!
I would suggest highlighting the edges with Dark Angels green or another lighter shade of green for that extra detail.

Thanks for the responses! It has really helped me make a push on some of the pieces I have been painting. Without further ado, here is my progress
My other models are just realizing how truely massive this titan will be, and seem to be giving it a wide bearth. The girlfriends eldar seem to be quite nervous: there is talk of them bringing in a reverant titan sometime in the near future to compete. I also found out that the local games shop (which I have never actually played at) doesn't allow Reavers due to them being "impossible to kill" except by other reavers. Oh well, It is still going to be awesome!

Ok, its been a few days, and I did a lot of painting to avoid prepping for my exams this week. Since I can't seem to figure out how to post pictures in my blog (just at the end with captions), you lovely folks will have to skim my speal before you get to the juicy pictures .
I am hopefully going to do one more post this week, although I doubt I will be able to since I have exams Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Saturday morning I am off on a quick vacation to the East Coast of Canada, to visit relitives and relax for a bit. Obviously I will be doing some painting there, but I sincerely doubt I will post my Reaver progress until around the last weekend of August.
That being said, there may be another juicy tidbit for anyone who notices: the majority of my space marines are on the East Coast, and I just might have access to a nice camera
Without further ado, the pics, and enjoy!!!!

This is looking really good and the green and gold works really well. I certainly agree with 40K Ninja - use magnets, especially for the weapons, that way, if you ever get any more they will be easy to swap round, although I guess you'll need quite big magnets (8-10mm diameter?) I've used the 3mm diameter ones on my latest dreadnought to great effect. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing it complete.

Thanks for all the encouragement! I will definately be using magnets. I saw a utube video of a reaver magnetized, and the idea is to pin the torso to the legs and the head to the body. Ideally I will use bolts to hold the upper arms to the shoulders, and magnetize the arms at the elbows. This is because all the arms are interchangable up to the elbows, with the exception of the titan fist. Id like to magnetize the carapace onto the back, and the top of the head to the bottom, but im not sure how that will work. I will also magnetize the 4 void shields on its back, so i can take them off as they are destroyed.
Still trying to figure out how I am going to be carrying this sucker

I know its not the weekend yet, but I think I have hit a rut, and im not sure how to go about the next few steps
In nearly every titan picture I have seen, they are all standing upright on equally spaced, level feet. Not wanting to follow trends, I have decided to have Leprechanus Rex "squashing" either a tank or a defiler. This will lead to a nice scenic base. I like the idea of a defiler for the "defiling my gold" and "squashed like a bug" aspects, but a tank with a couple of corrupted gardsmen or chaos marines being squeezed out like toothpaste would also be cool.
Anyway, my problem is that I obviously dont have the base built yet, so the legs cant be assembled. this leads to complications all the way from the ankle joints to the waistline, where tubes and cables must be connected into holes and sockets.
Do I build a rough base out of plasticard, cardboard and styrofoam to sit the legs on, and connect all but the toes together, and then build a scenic base after the piece is done? I could start on the scenic base right away, which would allow me to figure out the toe joints, but would obviously be more complicated and take more time. I plan on magnetizing the feet to the base, allowing me to change between a scenic base and one for tournament play.
on a seperate note, here is some progress: I got in last night, and painted while playing my weekly game of Deathwatch over the internet.

If you're magnetising everything so you can change the position of the legs/feet for display/gaming purposes I'd start from the bottom and work my way up. Whilst the idea of crushing something like a defiler is good, I would think crushing a tank would be easier to build and would probably enable you to give the titan more stability when displayed.

Post by: Aeroroot
I was going to magnetize the base of the feet to the stand. It makes sense to work my way up, but I was hoping there would be a better way
43399
Post by: monkeyh
Not sure - I've never built anything this big before! Not sure either how much the model weighs, but just make sure the magnets are big and man enough to do the job. As mentioned before, I would guess you'll need ones about 8-10mm diameter. Those little neodymium/rare earth magnets you can get are pretty strong.

Hi all! Somethings a foot in my reaver blog. Well, two feet actually. I still have to do some fine detail work on the pistons on the knees, toes, and hips, but other then that, it looks pretty good.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS put the toes together before putting on the armor plates on the shins. As I found out, having the armor plates in place makes it impossible to glue the top of the toe pistons into place. Also, as I found out there are actually 4 different pieces of shin armor: two with big gaps in the side and two for the small gaps. the big gaps go on the inside, so if you get it mixed up (again, as I did) things get messy

What are the planned clours for the head? I know you mentioned bone?

Post by: Aeroroot
Im looking at doing tamiya spray paint "wood deck tan" for the head. very similar to bleached bone (tieing it into the kneepad and script). I use it for all of my deathwing termies, and I can't think of any better colours. I read online that large amounts of metalic colors look bad on flat areas (so there goes a brass head). Do you guys have any ideas?
37908
Post by: D.Smith
I used to use tamiya colours myself and i think deck tan would suit it quite well with the right shading.
You could still incorporate the brass in the metalwork that is around the edges of the head and eyes?

Post by: dsteingass
Absolutely stunning stuff man! subbed. I have used almost this exact paint scheme on my Baneblade (built to look like an ancient, holy tank). For all the antique brass trim, I mixed Vallejo game dwarf bronze with a little beasty brown. If you want some weathering ideas for this paint scheme, look at the Defiler in GW's How To Paint Citadel Tanks book. My Baneblade has never been finished, but this might impress me to work on it more

Im planning on making him a titan killer. Only the game master knows I have this guy, so Im hoping I go second, keep him in reserve, and then bring him in shooting first turn. Looking at turbo laser, laser blaster and volcano cannon. that way I get 5-5" and one ordinance 7" destroyer hits a turn. On the other hand, two laser blasters and a turbo laser might be fun too. If haven't already magnetized the torso/hip joint be aware that the torso is extremely back heavy, especially if you have the head removeable as well. My first attempt made the whole thing fall backwards off the legs if the head was removed. I suggest a combination of a large post and magnets.

----------------------------------WARNING-----------------------------------WARNING-----------------------------------------------------
We interrupt this painting blog to inform you of the tragic events on Lyndsais II, a Titanic Battle that occurred in the far reaches of the Imperium
Recenty constructed, the Reaver Titan Hibernicus Fortuna marshalled near the ork junkyard of the Big Mek GobBuzz, in an attempt to stop his creation of an ork mechanized army capable of laying waste to the Lyndsais system. There, Hibernicus rendezvoused with the larger Reaver Titan “Iron Fury”, as well as Tau, Grey Knight and Reformed Daemonic forces. Upon arrival, it was clear that another army also laid clam to Big Mek GobBuzz’s factories and fortress. A substantial force of Tau, ork Stompas, Land Raiders and the infamous Warhound Titan “Fluffy” were seen advancing towards the facility from the South. Most notably, it could be seen that Big Mek GobBuzz was still firmly entrenched in his fortified Mek shop, and showed every sign of fighting any and all comers for his hard won gains.
---------------------------------------------End of Transmission---------------------------------------------------------
In this battle, I was equipped with twin laser blasters and carapace mounted Apocalypse Missile launcher. Took 5 ratlings to round my army out to 1500pts even.
Set up first, play first. First turn resulted in me toppling an ork stompa. Second turn, a squad of tactical landed in drop pod between me and the table edge behind (only 8 inches of space there; not quite sure how he made it). Stunned my left laser blaster with melta fire, but some of my tau allies helped kill most of them before they did any more damage. Ratlings killed 3 marines with 5 shots. Third turn, Sanguinary guard with melta pistols and a second melta tactical squad landed behind me, and I soon lost both a structure point and my left laser blaster. The worst was that they stunned both my missile launcher and other laser blaster, spoiling my kill of an enemy warhound with 1 structure point left (Guardsman Marbo got it with a det pack, after using a vortex grenade on a land raider with Marneus Calgar inside). Spent the rest of the game killing land raiders and kicking sanguinary guard/space marines. Unfortunately, one Sanguinary guard lived long enough to contest the objective at my feet (and the game ended with him staring down my reaver and a named daemon prince of khorne), leaving the objective score at 1 for us and 2 for them, with one uncontested objective still being held by the third party orks whose home we had so rudely trashed for this game.
In the ride home, Hibernicus Fortuna’s hip came loose, so I have to find a better way of pinning it in place for the following games. Other than that, Hibernicus Fortuna gets a painting grade of 4/10: high enough so that she looks good on the table, as long as no one looks at her closely. No interior detail yet, and all weathering and a lot of fine detail still needs to be done on the exterior.

You could use spade connectors (the male/female type). Cheap, plenty reliable for what you're trying to do, and easy to connect and disconnect. Should work fine for the connections in between pieces of your titan. Let me know if you need a picture or something...

Yes, you do. Since there are only 2 and 3 weapon slots and more than 4 weapon options. It keeps a Reaver from being $1100+ if you just want 3 particular weapons.
Not sure where you got the idea that it was just given to him either.

I'm so glad I live in the UK - I thought £560+ sounded alot for a reaver but $1100 sounds so much worse! (not that I can afford either!) As for the sticks - punji stick traps for tresspassers?

I am officially in love with Forge World!!!! I sent them an email today requesting their new catalog (looking into eldar titans for the girlfriend, and possibly some armor for my next project), and mentioned that I was missing a thumb for my reaver. I did stress that I got the model second hand, and that I was willing to pay to get the piece, but they're shipping it to me for free!! I am so impressed, I have sworn off buying new Games Workshop models for the foreseeable future, and intend on saving those funds towards a substantial forge world order!
PS: working 60 hour weeks is not very conducive to painting a titan. Hopefully I will work on it some more over the weekend, and have a shiny new update or two for you in the coming week.

It is good (as everyone else already said). The subplots are very interesting as well. My only gripe is that it seemed to have a rushed ending. There was so much to wrap up with only a few pages left that I almost was expecting a "to be continued..."
47173
Post by: Aeroroot
Ok, so Titanicus is read...did I miss a prequel or something? I found that it was missing character development, especially with Adept Feist. Great plot otherwise; would love to see the characters evolve more.
On another note, it mentioned that only titans of warlord class or above are equipped with "casket" princeps, so I think I am safe not installing one. Even if I wanted to, the cockpit is way to small to give it the attention it would deserve. I was very interested in how each titan had a personality that manifested in its princeps. Perhaps my princeps needs an irish cane or something?

Ok, with work being the way it is, and preparing for an epic Christmas vacation, I have had precious time to work on Hibernicus. I truely am sorry for the lack of updates; if I had anything to report, I would. Anyway, heres the (minor) work I have been able to get done.
With the work on the legs (the pins came out of the hip joints, and I had to reglue it) it still seems a little tipsy. I feel that it will improve once I build a base to magnetize the model to (yeah I want to magnetize the base so I can interchange them if I build anything cooler)

I could definitely use a chaos land raider, although due to the placement of the toes on the foot it would make it more difficult (the side toes are curled downwards, leaving the space of a transport vehicle underneath). I suppose I could rearrange it so a LR could fit. At the moment, I am looking at ebay and other online sites for any chaos vehicle. If I find a defiler, rhino, land raider, or even a chimera at a cheap price I'll snap it up. Since I want to magnetize the feet to the base, I can always create a second base later with a different vehicle, and use the first one as scenery in smaller scale games.
++++++Update++++++
I spent most of the night working on the head of the titan. Got one light completely in, although the LED's are burning out if I poke them the wrong way. 2 more lights to go!!! Also magnetized the head to the torso with rare earth magnets+++++++++++++++++

Ok, I did a silhouette of Hibernicus’ feet, and tried to place the scenery. Obviously the shaded green is the feet, and the purple is the ‘sploded defilier. The big red blob is the cracked Aquila from the”honoured imperium” set, and the silver blob is the ruined arches from the same. Not sure about putting the Aquila in, because it’s not completely flat on top and I don’t want to hover the foot above the base (meaning I need to modify the Aquila, or take apart the foot, both of which suck). That, and with the Aquila, the base is frickin huge! (nearly 24 by 36 cm, or 9 ½ by 14” for you imperial people) If I get rid of the Aquila, it makes the base smaller, and it will still be pretty rigid considering my plan to use low expansion foam.
Any thoughts?

I know there has been no update in a while, and I am sorry for that. A combination of this being my last term in university, an increasingly demanding social life, and a disastrous failure of my first attempt to build a base for Hibernicus allowed for little to no progress whatsoever. The torso was touched up, the void shields painted, and a lot of weathering done on the shoulders and armor plates. Still have to finish the lower torso, head, and pelvis.
I have discovered that there are two kinds of low expansion foam. For the sake of simplicity, let’s call them the type that does what I want it to do, and the type that doesn’t. The type that does what I want it to do creates a very interesting, hilly terrain that is completely solid, extremely lightweight, and easily sprayable for scenic effects. The type that doesn’t do what I want it to do looks the same, but dries to the texture of cake. Fluffy cake. Spongy cake that could be mistaken for soft ice cream if it was cold.
Heres some photos of that disastrous event. I now (hopefully) have the right type of expansion foam, so I intend on making another attempt this weekend on it.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate that my blog has come to use. I tried to take some photos that I didn`t see online when I started building. Even thought of uploading the instructions, except they are copyrighted...
Update (wow, two in under a week!!!)
Got the nice, new, hard base built and base-sprayed! Still have to add brown, flock, sand, and paint the scenery. Also going to mount the battery pack under the aquila I think, to make it discreet (although possibly not easy to access)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I am thinking of renaming Hibernicus `Pissy-Heavy-Arsed McWobbly` since it it rear heavy, and one of the knee joints is bothering me. Having magnets in the base attaching it to the base solves a lof of the problem, but still.

Should be an interesting game: the terrain has been built specifically so that it can block a titans line of sight. Also, its 2000pts instead of 1500, but 500pts must be troop choices. We found that the titans just had too much range, and everyone was bringing tanks and no troops. Should be a lot of fun.

Got the foam today! 2x2`` thick, and 6x1`` thick sheets. Boy was I lucky: Hibernicus barely fit inside one of these boxes when all was said and done, and it is quite snug inside to tell the truth.
Each box is about 7 and a half inches deep, and measures 14.5x18 inches inside. I would not want to go any smaller in box side: I barely made everything fit nicely as it was!
I have a midterm in Biomechanial Engineering tomorrow, but after that I hope to really make some progress. Cross your phalanges, but there could be a halfways decent progress update on the horizion!

The light transport "Podracer" is unable to leave system due to warp storms. It is recommended that alternate titan legons be selected to defend Orion IV.

Well, the weather turned nasty, with about 10cm of snow falling early this morning, and an additional 10cm forecasted for the rest of today. Too long a drive in such bad weather meant I was unable to get to the tourni. This was both good and bad, because the lighting connection from the base of the model into the stand is really messing up. I'll get some detailed wiring photos once it is done, along with the base when it is painted to a satisfactory standard. Sorry, having technical difficulties: the heel of one of the feet isn't resting quite right, making the base a bit rocky. Once I fix the base, I'll post pics ASAP. I am on reading week now, so I hopefully have some time to get to work on this stuff.
