I actually home brew a little too, but have been known to be lazy and augment that with various beers. I tend to drink stuff like yuengling light if I'm going to have more than 1 or 2 but will drink something like Sam Adams Cream Stout or Guiness if only having 1 or 2...

I don't really have a favorite. All beer can be good under the right conditions.

There's FAR too many excellent beers to choose just one all the time.

The one I drink the most would have to be Old Style. Not that it's particularly good, but the only options at Cubs games are Old Style, Bud, and standing in line missing the game for a Heineken.

But, when I'm not feeling adventurous and just want a familiar beer I typically choose Goose Island 312.

Moosehead. Despite being Canadian, probably one of the best beers for casual drinking. Not too watered down, not too hoppy.

Although if I'm trying to impress people, I order Spaten.

Guinness.

I also love 'honey' or 'golden' ales like Otter, Abbott, Gem etc.

I also regularly drink and love (as dakkacon attendees will confirm...) Gin and Tonic, but only Bombay Sapphire or Hendricks Gin.

Guinness would be my 'available almost anywhere' beer, Labatt Blue would be my cheap 'available everywhere' beer (plus its my hockey beer)
Good local microbrews would be my preferred beer (I'm not picky, and I like sampling more creative artisanal beers rather than drinking gakky industrial crap out of a can), with my favorite currently being Brown's Cherry Raspberry Ale out of Browns Brewing Co. in Troy, NY (near Albany), also a fan of Ommegang Rare Vos, amongst others.

I am going to have to try some beer from these guys:

http://blackacrebrewing.com/home/

simply because awesome stuff happens if you click "I Am Under 21" (try it). I reward creativity

The only experience I've had with booze was when I was twelve (oh quiet all of you, its not like that)

My dad and his friend were drinking Bud Lights in the garage and I came out there to see what they were doing, I asked them what they were drinking and my dad shoved his bottle at me thinking I'd take a swig, instead I took a gulp...and nearly puked...

stuff tasted like liquid gak... -shrugs- perhaps I'll have more pleasant alcohol experiences when I come of age in a few years...

From what I've tasted I prefer Yuengling over most of everything. Corona is swill and Bud Light is terrible, but I want to import a beer from Austria but not really for drinking.

There's a town called Fething and they decided to name a brew after it, its a light beer that they call Fething Hell.

Shepherd Neame's Spitfire (the Bottle of Britain)

Wells and Young's Bombardier

Thwaite's Lancaster Bomber

What I drink most often:
McGolden Light (when in minnesota)
PBR
Guinness

Other things I like that I only get when I buy for home:
Summit (really like the Finnigans. Also had most of their beer while at the brewery)
New Belgium (Skinny Dip and Fat Tire are my favorites)

I have 5 international beers to try at home, and one Bell's. Also have a few home brews here and there. I am still young so I am always good to try some new things.

Normally Hobgoblin or similar ales.

However It's got to be Tactical Nuclear Penguin. 32% imperial stout. You drink it like a whiskey.
(it is however very expensive, one of my friends is a shareholder in the brewery)

I would say right now Boulevard Pilsner is probably my most purchased beer. It is cheap (same price as miller, bud, or variant 12pk), tastes great, and is local to me. I also like the following though:

Odell's IPA
Guiness Extra Stout
PBR
Miller GD

well to be honest, I like most beers. It would be easier to make a short list of beers I don't like versus beers I like. My favorite cheap beer though is probably Boulevard Pilsner

As weird as it sounds, I'm quite into American beers (despite the flak they get). I'll happily quaff a Budweiser or Corona (with a wedge of lime in the bottle of course), although if there is Coors on offer I end up in a cycle of indecision.

If I'm looking for something fancy, then I'll go for a Miller or San Miguel.

I really enjoy trying imported stuff, three of my favourite are Asahi Black (A Japanese beer, with a somewhat stouty taste), Wetherspoons over here did a beer from china for a while called 'Lucky', it tasted good and the bonus was that it came in a bottle shaped like bhudda!:

If I'm doing any improvised drinking (i.e. picking up some beverages on the way to a friends house etc) I like to go with Brahma, for the reason that it is nice when it's chilled, but is also pretty good at room temperature (unlike say Coors or Miller, which tastes so much better when it's been in the fridge for good length of time), so lacking any form of drinks-cooling isn't too much of a let-down.

I'm not a fan of German/Eastern European stuff though, especially 'Budvar' (it's a Czech-brewed budweiser I think), they taste a little too much like bread for me.

Being almost next to the Shepherd Neame brewery I tend to drink most of their beers (you can smell the brewing from my house mmmm...malty)
There is a factory outlet in town and the local supermarkets often have spitfire etc for a quid a bottle!
I do also like hobgoblin, Adnams, and a couple from the badger brewery.
Fullers london pride too!

To be honest I'm not that picky and will try anything. I can also recommend Kolsch which is the type of beer you get in the Bonn/ Koln area in Germany. It is served in small glasses so is really easy to loose track of how much you're drinking though!

If I'm not on the beer then I quite like a good single malt whisky.

Avatar 720 - You've never heard of Broadside? Do you ever go to pubs? Broadside (had a pint today) is the staple diet amongst beer swilling East Anglians! It's very good - make sure you don't waste it by spilling any.

Kilkrazy - I had no idea you could get this stuff outside the UK. I thought everbody all over the world outside of Britain drank lager or Guiness. This is very encouraging. Been drinking Marston's Long Hop today (as well as the Broadside) - very nice. I am priviledgesd enough to live near a decent real ale pub which always has a least 8 different ales on (Big up the Royal Oak in Poringland - Norwich). On a recent trip to Africa - the popular lager over there is Tusker which is actually pretty good (coming from a non lager drinker). Used to drink a lot of Guiness, which I like (can't stand the chilled stuff though). But definitely big on the real ale, especially as I'm spoilt for choice round my way. Beer festival the end of the month

Easy now guys, let's not get into a slagging match between British and German beers - it may get out of hand! For now, they're both good, I'm just going through a period in my life where I find ale far more quaffable than lager.

It has to be Adnams Broadside. It kicks like a mule, especially when drunk with Tequila chasers!

And is it worth noting that Americans typically drink Lager?

Yes, indeed, a shame that our cuisine is mainly focussed on sausage, bread and cabbage. Not like yours, of course. To quote a fine English brewery: What's the matter, lager boy, afraid you might taste something?

Ahhhh, That would be Wychwood. Brewed in my town! Awesome stuff, especially Hobgoblin...

Whilst Broadside is good stuff, I think you'll find it's probably the Tequila chasers that are doing most of the kicking!

KK you must like Second World War themed fermented vegetable beverages?

Last week I went on vacation in Leavenworth, WA and then fishing over in Ennis, MT with my pops. While in Washington, I was able to experience the bottle of joy that is Snoqalamie Falls Brewing Company's 'Pre-Prohibition Pilsner, Summer Beer' in the bottle. This was the best damn pint I have ever had hands down, with Bit Burger from tap being a close second. Usually on Fridays, workmates and I have a pub gathering at the taproom for Mad River Brewery, which has an assortment of beers available. Their Steelhead is particularly good.

I've been looking everwhere for that Snoqalamie Pilsner though, but they only have it distributed in Washington, Northern Idaho, and Portland. It is almost worth driving 500 miles to get some.

I'm not much a of a beer snob, if at all, but the fact that you mentioned American Domestic beers is disappointing. Some English beer is good, but Germans have a knack for making some very good drinks.

Ignoring everything that I and anybody else had said before, when all is said and done, English ale is best. I can guarentee it, I've just been down the pub to test some and I can assure you it was excellent!

This has been my go-to beer for the past year and some. It's really just great stuff. It drinks light enough that you can get just gooned on it, but at the same time it's got a really smooth flavour and a great aftertaste that you can just sit there and sip away at when you're just up for an evening brew after dinner.

Though I agree with you Englishmen. English Ale is the peak of all brews. I have a healthy love for Wychwood Brewery and their tasty Hobgoblin label.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout is also goddamn amazing. And if you want something that tastes like a punch in your words-hole, Black Friar Ale is right up that alley.

Not a big fan of chocolate flavoured beers but I do like a decent stout. Adnams do a great one called Oyster stout but I think they only do it in the Autumn/Winter months. Much better than Guiness.

Most stouts are. Apparently, if you go to Ireland it undergoes some kind of magical apotheosis into a decent stout. I've never been, so I cannot confirm this. As to Youngs Double Choc, I believe it's not artificially flavoured with chocolate, it just has a subtle chocolatey after taste. My better half and I have recently been enjoying a beer called Bitter and Twisted, lovely if you like something with a bit of fight to it. I cannot remember the brewery, I'm afraid. Bath Ales are marvellous too, particularly the Bath Gem.

I seem to recall my local having one or two of the bath ales in and they were pretty good. We'll see what next weekends beer festival brings!

I enjoy nearly all types of Beer, though the only one i have come across that I just could not enjoy is Oatmeal Stout.

I honestly do not understand this pissing contest over whether English beer is better than German beer.. It's two completely different types of beer!!

I will agree that the English/British Isles make the best Ales and Stouts. But, Germany, IMO makes the best Lagers and Weizenbier. The only thing we Americans can even compare to England and Germany, as far as beer is concerned, is in the Microbrew world.

When Im home in the states, I enjoy Widmer Brothers Hefeweizen.

Though, TBH, most often I am drinking some Glenlivet, or Glenmorangie single malt of various age.

I expect a full and comprehensive report on all beers of quality discovered. It is your duty as a real ale drinker!

@Ensis Ferrae
Have you ever tried Geuze (is that spelt correctly?)? It's popular in Belgium, but as far as I can tell it tastes like acid and pain. It's the one type of beer I just cannot enjoy.

+1 on the fine single malts, there. Have you drank Laphroaig at all? It's good stuff.

I havent had much, if any Belgian stuff over here (although i am only about 3 hours from the border).. sounds like a good one to avoid, unless im already lit up. There is only one place that I have even seen Laphroaig, but next time i'm there, I may have to try it. There was a 24 year old Glenlivet that I was tempted by, but at 27 Euro for 2cl of it.. its kind of hard to justify.

Yeah, if you're gonna get some of the really mature stuff you might as well go nuts and buy a bottle. Keep it for special man and whisky moments at home.

You should try geuze once. Just to see. It's a unique experience.

Ah yes! Now we are onto my next favourite tipple - whiskey! It's got to be Scottish malt. Glenmorangie and Glenlivet will always be favourits. I favour slightly sweeter whiskey (not a big fan of the heavily smokey/peaty ones) Favourite is without doubt Jura. Like Old Pultney (slightly salty), Yamazaki (Japanese - yes it's VERY good) 12 year old, Tomintoul, Auchentoshan, Glenfiddich is usually pretty good too. Tried many. Would one day like to try some from one of those bottles that cost thousands of pounds to see if it is any better than the stuff that costs about £30 a bottle. The one problem I have had over the last few years is I one day foolishly said to my wife "try some whiskey". Sadly she really liked it so now it disappears twice as fast!

Speaking of Whiskey, I had an awesome maple whiskey from Quebec called "Sortilege"

Was $70.00 for a 2'6, but it was the best bottle of Canadian Whiskey I've ever had. Most of the stuff we make is warm enough to melt ice off your damn driveway in winter, so it was a nice change to find a good smooth sipping whiskey. Really awesome stuff.
