What are yours dakkadakka?

My phobia is rings or getting my fingers trapped. Weirdly i dont mind thumbrings just the idea of anything going past my second knuckle makes my skin crawl.

My irrational hatred is dressing up, not like uniforms or work clothes (or back in the day school uniform) just fancy dress or any event/venue that requires special clothes.

I don't know if it's really a phobia..perhaps more of an irrational hate, but I loathe appearing weak or incapable or having to ask others for help...
I can't begin to count the times I've lifted things at the shop I had no business attempting to lift by myself, or struggled with a situation before I would allow myself to ask for assistance.

Phobias:
Millipedes
Centipedes
Swimming in lakes
Rollercoasters/most amusement park rides (I am uncomfortable putting my life in the hands of the underpaid disinterested high school student sitting behind the controls for the damn thing, that and I saw perhaps 1 to many news stories about people that died on rides)

Hatreds:
Baby Wipes
Small Children
Asking for help
Giving up

I just came upstairs due to a spider appearing in the living room from behind the TV. Trouble is that there was a very small one in the same area earlier on, so i'm becoming worried that the big one that just appeared was the same one from a few nights ago, and it went in to hiding to give birth... Luckily, the house is going through the selling process at the moment, so any further birthings will take place far away from where i'll be, thank God.

Perkustin wrote:What i dislike about people who are afraid of spiders (+wasps actually) is that they insist on killing them. Poor blighters. :(

I'm the opposite; i'll ask someone to remove the spider, they'll grab something to whack it with, and I have to tell them not to kill it, only to be fixed with a stare that says "look you wuss, it either dies here or stays here".

It means a lot of the spiders I point out to people end up dead within minutes, but it's good to know you weren't the one who ordered their execution.

Me too. Just knock me out and make sure I have plenty of pain meds to eat while I recover. And as for the water phobia, living in Kansas fixes that one nicely. I do live less than an eighth of a mile from a river, but it's pretty easy to avoid.

Underwater landscapes... particularly in the Ocean. That amount of water can be unsettling. Couple that with being deeply submerged in it and interacting with the environment there and I can get the shivers. Its funny though because I like aquariums. I guess it being behind glass makes it 'safe.'

Heights. If I'm enclosed, say, in an airplane, I'm fine. If I'm on a roller coaster, I'm fine, since somehow the thrill of the speed overrides my fear.

But if I'm hiking up a mountain and part of the trail happens to have a sharp drop off on either side? Or if I'm on a ferris wheel that stops while I'm at the top? Or the time I was at some team-building exercise thing where they have you walk across the rope between two trees? I don't know what the technical name is.

Oh man. Oh. Man. OH MAN.

I'm very slightly claustrophobic, and have a mild fear of heights.

I used to be fairly arachnophobic but that's faded a lot since I was a kid. Maybe my rational awareness of how great an ally they are to human beings in dealing with parasites who actually are directly harmful to us has penetrated to my subconscious.

I have a phobia of darkness...well, not specifically the darkness but just things that "go bump in the night." Just let it be known that If you're standing next to me and its dark and there's the slightest noise, I am likely to pull a Scooby Doo and jump into your arms.

Spiders. I am a lot better now though then in the past. However they will die. I don't care how good they are for us.

The Dark. Blame a babysitting from years ago. Don't let little kids watch horror movies. (Why this has to do with the dark, I don't really know, it was more of a jump out at your thriller)

Heights. Flying is fine. Tall buildings are even fine. Ladders and tall platforms, not cool. Which sucks when I am a light guy for theater and do wiring on the sides. Scary when you are 2 stories up and the ladder starts to tip.

Hate: Horror movies (see above), roller coasters, and that is pretty much about it.

This, I hate asking people for things because it doesn't give me the gratification that I would get if I did it or got it myself.

Also, get a rather uncomfortable feeling when in high places, but I'm not sure if that's really a fear, much less an irrational one.

I suppose that is part of personal opinion or religious idea...
But honestly...it's a giant " who knows".

The religious who claim you move on to some paradise or punishment don't really know...no matter how much they profess that they do.
And the " Faithless" who claim " You die..you rot" ( this would be my camp) don't really know anything either...we're just making an educated guess.

... I guess in the end we'll all find out...or we won't know anything anymore.

I don't know that it's a feeling that should be ignored ....we should be aware ( on some level) that our days are finite....and in such attempt to enjoy our time here as much a possiable.
The knowledge of ones impending ending shouldn't be a source of fear...but an inspiration to enjoy the time you've got as much as you can.

I don't have an irrational fear of death, I accept that I'm destined to die (not if I can help it!) I just hope that its painless when it comes.

My biggest irrational fear, and what everyone should fear the most, is loneliness, not death:

I honestly cry every time I read that (in fact, I'm crying right now as a result). I've actually had dreams that are almost identical to this (except I'm not a cat), and it scares the gak out of me every time it happens.

I have a stepmother who jumps at even the sight of little jumping spider, I guess I'm a little prejudiced toward arachnophobes because she always yells for me to come kill it and flush it (No, not throw it in the garbage, she makes me flush it because she's convinced that if that is not done then the spider is somehow still a threat. ) and its annoying.

I have to admit though, the videos of those people who prank others by placing tarantulas on their shoulders aren't cool...if someone did that to me, I would not be responsible for what I did to them...

Cockroaches, needles, and broken glass are my phobias.

Roaches make me freeze in my tracks and I have a hard time approaching them to kill them.

When having any sort of blood work performed in a hospital I nearly pass out when jabbed with a needle.

I won't go into a room barefoot for a couple of weeks if a glass broke in that area. No matter how well I think the glass is cleaned up I inevitably find a shard in my foot. I also refuse to go barefoot outside unless I have a reasonable assurance that broken glass wouldn't be present. Enclosed patios are usually okay, but dashing down my driveway or out onto the sidewalk barefoot--hell no!

All of these fears I recognize as being silly and irrational, but I cannot seem to get over them. :(

Depends what you expect to happen. I would simply be expecting the end of existence, in the sense that I do not in any way believe in any religious text or the existence of any other "realm of being", thus for me killing myself isn't too much of an experiment - it would be a genuine shock if I were to somehow continue living in some way.

Add to my list: Needles and sharp-objects wielded by other people in close proximity to myself.

Getting jabs for anything or injections in general will cause me to violently hyperventilate amongst a few others things like feeling lightheaded or uncontrollable tensing of my muscles, and spark a state of general panic.

Knives or similar sharp objects in the hands of others will cause me to experience a fear of them managing to injure themselves or me through carelessness or misuse, so I often have to leave the room or try not to watch them use it.

I dislike heights (though I'm more than willing to be "that guy" who pushes the skittish people off the edge whilst bungie jumping)...and commonly make up exscuses against having myself placed in such places. I do however have a habbit of hanging out of my bedroom window and ungodly hours of the night for some reason, and have no problem with getting out of a situation where I am in a high place-youknow like jumping off of said window ledge into the neighbour's bushes to chase after a bloody fox...that type of thing. ^^

Swimming not so much. I like swimming...though I've learned that I'm not to fond of it when it involves a bit of cave diving (oxygen masks? We don't need not stinking o2 masks...) with a bunch of idiots just for an award. Meh, I just cliimbed up the gorge face to the other side....I like gorge climbing. =)

Irrational hatreds? Uh....I hate lawyers and parking wardens (irrational as I've never been in a situation where I've felt their "rath", otherwise I loathe the fethers).

No... I mean like not being able to take criticism, not taking fault for ones own mistakes, being a douche, not caring about the feelings/POV of others, etc.

Interesting if that is a rational dislike or not.
I have a similiar intuitive dislike. but if I am brutally honest have been guilty of same myself.
Doubt if such is uncommon, as it is unlikely there are any saints among us.

Rationally I want to believe that I am sympathetic to others' views. But the truth maybe otherwise.

Phobias I've gone are rather odd. Swimming in deep water is fine, riding a boat through the ocean is great and I love to snorkel, but looking directly down while at the surface terrifies me to death. The way the water blurs everything beneath me is horrific as I'm fully aware, being a hopeful marine biologist, of what sort of nightmare being could be snaking its way up to me. It's easy enough to fix by submerging myself... but until I do that is awful. The other big phobia is just abandonment. This leaves me to be socially askew at times '>...>

What I despise with intense fury though are arachnids and really anything with over 6 legs. Centi-, mili-peds along with their ilk, and most other insectoid creatures Will die a second and eternal death in the bottoms of the pits of hell where they rightfully belong. Stuff with 6 legs though is fine, praying mantises are adorable and ants just belong outside my house, but I still dislike touching them

Fear of the Ocean is completely rational. Cthulhu is down there somewhere.

Fears - Putting myself wholly into the power of others. I hate the idea of for example, being knocked out and having some stranger rooting around inside me. If i was awake, I could at least snatch a scalpel and defend myself.

Hatred - People who ask for help too readily. I hate it when people don't even try to help themselves.
Tying in with that, people who accept obligations they can't/won't be able to handle, and do so in the full knowledge that 'someone' will pick up the slack.

And the fact that we let people get behind the wheel of a car before we find them legally competent to enter into a contract or take care of themselves. That is.... something special.

I suppose you could call IEDs an irrational fear. Though, at the time when they were actually a problem for me, it was rational; just took quite awhile to get over the fact that i was driving in a "safe" environment, and there were no IEDs where I am. I'm sure I have something better, but I haven't thought of it yet.

Hatred: Flies... god fething hell!!! i bloody hate the little bastards buzzing around, dodging my attempts as ending their pathetic, and annoying existence.

People with a lack of manners, and being rude to others in public places, or to residents of a housing area when they are guests.

Things like not saying "please" and "thank you" especially when concerning the treatment of restaurant workers, OR kids concerning their talking to adults. It's not hard to say thanks, or thank you, or even Sir and Ma'am.. so bloody do it!

you ever been to war? It's pretty cliche to say that there are no atheists in a foxhole, but it's pretty damn true. When things get hairy... they also get fun.. I will admit that being shot at, while ridiculously scary, is also one of the most adrenaline producing moments I have ever dealt with.

I think the rap music thing does count, and I generally share your sentiment in that regard, though I cant say that I hate it as much as what i put earlier (although if you are playing your rap music far too loud whilst driving an automobile.. that's rude and obnoxious.. which means i hate it)

I wouldnt have mentioned war if I hadnt bro!

I'm a green beret! I was marking targets in Iraq 24 hours before shock and awesome even started, and in Kuwait as early as January, the good ol USMC 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit was attached to our brigade (3 Commando) when we invaded Umm Quasr and we went back again two years later because it was so much fun.

I went to the Gan twice as well. Oh and Sierra Leone and NI for good measure.

There arent many American atheists in foxholes? What about these guys at Fort Bragg?

Macho bs aside, consider yourself friended, PM me some war stories.

I need to add something to the hates.

People who think they know everything about science because they took tons of physics. Sure you can try to explain that we don't really know how something works, but don't try to tell me I am wrong in my science.

At least in my science and the experience backing it, I can explain that it is right and works, while all you can say is that it doesn't but can't really prove it.

Also people who complain that I only got my job because of my family. Good, welcome to the real world. Its about who you know and who you are willing to blow, not who is best for the job. I am sure some day you will get over that I will make more money than you without having to do any real work.

One more: people who complain that I am not painting my own army. Only thing of mine I am not painting is 3 valks, and only cause the guy wanted to paint one, and I said why not all 3 so they are at least consistent.

I don't really have any...I'm not saying I won't be scared if in a certain situation etc, but as phobias go - nothing really stands out. I can't swim - but not because I have a fear of water...I feel left out now

I don't get why people have a fear of death, never really have. The only thing you should be fearful of is the manner in which you die - none of us would like to be tortured to death, so a fear of death by torture is rational - but death itself? It's inevitable, you might as well be afraid of the sun rising and setting, or of breathing itself

Irrational Fears:

Heights, but I make myself walk out on catwalks at work even though I can see 30-100' straight down to the ground, depending on where I am.

Lightning. Having been near a lightning strike when i was younger, anytime there is a thunderstorm and I feel the hair on my arms start to stand up from static electricity, I head for cover.
