I came in 4th (of four players) with a measly 19 battle points for the day using tyranids. Both dark eldar players made meat puppets out of my monstrous creatures, leaving me no synapse. The BA game was closer, one failed assault move flipped it from what would have been a minor victory to what ended up as a minor loss in round 1.
Good luck in the semi's everyone who advanced! me? I'm going to practice with my tau and spend more time at the painting table while I reformulate strategies and tactics.

4th Tau with lots of upgrades
5th Eldar with a unique build, lots of wave serpents and CC ability
6th BW Orks

9th BA with 3 Stormravens packed with extra killy Death company & furiosos
10th guy that left, Don't remember here
11th guy that left, Don't remember here either.
I had to be matched up with the leaf blower round one, who reserves his entire force after I get to go first. By the time it rolled in on bottom of 2, I had no chance. I got 4 KP, he got 14, plus the traitor. I managed to kill 3 chimeras and a Vendetta. That's all.
2nd round I got a buy, but it really didn't help.
3rd Round I was matched up with the Tau, who reserved his force too on DOW. I had no way to even use my Manticore and it was killed the next turn. It was a minor loss, but it sure felt a lot worse.
Wound up with 27 points total.

The Tyranids' unusually good performance last year in the preliminaries last year had a lot to do with the wacky KP mission that was almost an auto-win for horde armies. They didn't fare well in the semi-finals.

Turnout was light compared to last year. Almost everyone had some kind of Marine, except for me and one Tau player. The scenarios were okay, if kind of stupid at times. They seemed poorly thought out to me, especially the second one with the varying costs for the objectives.
My army was: Shining Spears with Autarch, Farseer, Howling Banshees, Fire Dragons, 2 squads of Dire Avengers (all Aspect warriors in Wave Serpents), Harlequins in a Falcon, Guardian Jetbikes, 2 Fire Prisms. It was a list built with the cunning strategy of taking every model I own.
I played the Grey Knights round 1, on a city table, and concentrated my forces on one flank. His army was a largely static and shooting-oriented, so once I killed his two Storm Ravens I was able to roll of the flank and kill his army piecemeal, using the terrain to block LOS to my army. I only lost a few things and almost wiped him out.
Round 2 was a mechanized Space Wolf army. His opening salvo of shots (from 1 Landraider, 1 Long Fang Squad, and 1 Dreadnought) killed 3 of my tanks and some 15 of my infantry. It was bad. Luckily my two bike squads were in reserve and came on from the corner of the long table edge, outflanking his army, and proceeded to kick butt. The Shining Spears, supported by the Fire Dragons, killed some 35 Space Wolves + vehicles, while my dismounted Harlequins and Dire Avengers managed to tie up and eventually defeat Logan Grimnar and some terminators (Fortune with an Invulnerable save is really good). At the end of the game my army was shattered, but there were only 2 damaged Rhinos left for the Space Wolves.
Round 3 was more Space Wolves, an especially obnoxious army with a bunch of Thuderwolf cavalry, a bunch of Long Fangs, a bunch of Razorbacks, and a bunch of small Grey Hunter units. The game started well as getting the first turn and the Dawn of War set up allowed me to get the jump on his largely static army. Again I shifted my forces to concentrate on one flank and some serious firepower saw about a third of his army killed on turn 2. But some utterly incompentent close combat against three Thunderwolves gutted the center of my army and stalled my momentum, so his Razorbacks and Longfangs showered me with love for several turns. Luckily his shooting was almost as bad as my assault so I was able to out-shoot his Longfangs with my tanks and eke out a victory.
3 good games, and the last 2 were real knife fights. I can't wait for round 2.

Post by: Blackmoor
Even though you do not see so many Space Wolves around this days as you did a year ago, the army is still a power house.
The other thing that leaps out is how well the Tyranids did. I wonder if it could be a couple of factors. The long time limit so that they can finish their games, and what I think is the biggest factor is the point limit. With the extra points they get to fill out their often neglected heavy support slots, or just fill up with an overwhelming amount of troops.
Also a lot of people are commenting on how low the turn out was. They had about 25 players in my store last year and they had about 14 this year. Here is the kicker though, at the same time as the 'Ard Boyz, they ran a Warmachine wrath book release tournament that had 20 people attending. I know that it is just one event and you can't make much of it, but that might be an ominous sign of GWs health at least in the Phoenix area. It seems like Warmachine is taking off, and GW games are declining.

Post by: Kirasu
Or perhaps a dissatisfaction with the 'ard boyz events in general. Every year the prize support gets stricter, the event rules dont improve or get more sloppy (like this year they didnt even bother to use the 'ard boyz stationary), no cool swag like 2009 'ard boyz and in general the staticness of 5th ed isn't helping
I know there are people who don't play Mech but after playing in a lot of tournaments and now running a lot of events its like I see the same list played on 90% of the boards.. Yes some may be called "space wolves", "Imperial guard", "dark eldar" or "grey knights" but for the most part its just a bunch of transports running around with random units inside
In either case, the turnout for Pittsburgh wasn't noticeably lower.. Maybe a little lower than last year. WFB is doing awful tho

1. Space Wolves ( 3 longfangs, 2 TWL, mech GH)
2. Eldar ( Elvatar)
3. Draigowing.
5 whole players showed from the 12 who signed up. Bye system was implemented that gave the bye player a major win.
Draigowing player had 1 wipeout loss, 1 minor loss and 1 massacre.
Grr I had 2 minor wins and a minor loss and got knocked out. Any scoring system that allows someone with a lesser win loss record place needs to be reworked.
I got shafted because I should have had the third bye, giving me 17 points instead of 3. A guy who already had a bye and had been massacred dropped out instead of playing. I believe they also gave him the bye points, so he actually placed over me, only playing 1 game. Lol I'm done whining about it.....at least I had 2 wins over 2 really good players.

Very interesting results, I loved seeing those two daemons place 2nd and 3rd. Means I wont be alone at semi finals with daemons
Hey Saber,
Do you happen to be Mike, who plays doubles with another Mike, at the battle standards tournaments. If you are, hey, this is the daemon player from the battle standard who played you in the third round of doubles and your friend in the first round of the nova practice tournament.
If not..good job in your games!

Judged for Time Warp Comics and Games (Cedar Grove,NJ) , we held the event off-site due to conflicts with MTG/YuGiOh events that were pre-scheduled. Only had 6 people play, 3 Ork players, a Blood Angel Player, a Dark Eldar player and a Nid player.
1. Blood Angels (Death Company, Death Company Dreadnaught, bunch of Rhinos/Razorbacks/Predators, some termies, and a drop pod for good measure).
2. Dark Eldar (3 units of trueborn in venoms, wyches/warriors in raiders, some bikes, 3x ravagers)
3. Orks (not sure which Ork player won (wasn't paying attention), but I think it was an infantry horde with some 150 boyz, 45 kommandos, some big guns and grots and other assorted stuff)
NJ is going to be seeing a lot of people advancing to the semi's, the North Jersey area alone had approx. 7 stores hosting the tourney (hence only 6 people this year vs. 16-18 last year).

1st Unusual Ultras list- Calgar, Gate/Zone Libby, 20 hammernators, 10 shootynators, three ten man Tac squads in Pods, 10 Devs with 4MLs. Run by a nice guy named Travis up from Savannah, GA on vaca.
2nd. Space Wolves
3rd. Lash/Abaddon CSM.
I missed qualifying due to eating a Minor Loss in a tight game against Travis in round two (after he and I being the only two players to get Massacres in round 1), then not being able to get better than a Draw against DW in round three. This was a fairly tight and low-scoring event, with lots of Draws and Minor wins. The top six players were separated by only six points, and 2nd and 3rd were actually tied on points, which they broke using strength of schedule.
Anyway, I'm not going to bore you with a sad story about my luck or dice; I already did that for the DCMs. I'll just relax and try to adapt to the feeling of NOT going to the Finals for once. Maybe start studying that Comp sheet for Da Boyz GT...

1st Inquisitorial GK
2nd Dark Eldar
3rd Eldar
I took 4th with Vulkan Droppod Marines. The 3rd place Eldar player is a high schooler and said he would be unable to make it to the next round or nationals if he made it that far, so he passed the invitation down to me! I'm pretty excited as this was my first 40k Tournament and my friend was the 1st place finisher, so a road trip for the 2nd round my be in our future if we don't get a 2nd round closer to home. He also got balls lucky in the last round picking up a Massacre to jump him 4 pts ahead of me in the standings.
We had 18 players, this is the breakdown as best as I can remember
2x Grey Knights (1 Inquisitorial)
3x Space Wolves
1x Blood Angels
3x Codex SM (1 Vulkan, 1 Bikes, 1 Mess'o'Stuff)
1x CSM
1x Tyranids
1x Orks
1x Eldar
2x Dark Eldar
2x IG
1x Sisters of Battle (Footsloggers, all metal models)
I played against CSM, Space Wolves, and Sisters, with a Minor Victory, Major Victory, and Draw, with 5 bonus points. There was only a handful of massacres all day and the standings after 3rd place were tight. There were about 6-8 people in the 40-45 pt range.

Whoop whoop! I figured you might beat me to posting. I played Drop Pod SW in round one (Art) who played a tight game and capitalized on my deployment mistake. I lost by one KP. That saw me submarining the rest of the tournament to pop up at the end. Played Jonathan's Guard and got a table massacre (full Bonus) and Tim's Grey Knights with a table massacre (full bonus). As you can see, I barely popped up ahead of rednekgunner at the end. This will be my first semi-finals, so I'm excited to go.
Great games and a great day. The only thing that I really didn't like is that some dark eldar guy played one game and decided he didn't do well enough so left, leaving my buddy Punk to sit on his hands for round 3. Lame. People should not go to tournaments unless they are willing to stick it out.

1. Grey Knights (draigowing)
2. Blood Angels (razorback spam) me
3. Tau
Had a major victory in first scenerio versus Nurgle CSM army. Had a Massacre in the 2nd scenerio versus a Khorne Berserker/Abaddon Termie CSM army. For the 3rd scenerio, I had a minor loss versus a Tau player who doesnt know you cant have friendly units within an inch of each other, liked to move his units through each other, and modelled his hammerhead stands so the nose is always hitting the ground so his railguns are lifted and can shoot past other tanks. Booooooo.
I picked up a Dark Eldar Raider box for my prize. A fun tournament overall though! Lots of CSM at our tournament.

Second non-placing SW (because of me) Major due to longfangs dropping venoms left and right but 2 lived to last turn to contest center, incubi contested his and I held my own plus obj opposite from mine along the short edge. Third game was against the IG blob guy...yeah IG blob vs Venom Spam...massacre on the Victory Points game having killed his general (Lord Commisar in a blob with 5 Incubi and my general (Vect).

Great store. Well ran tournament. Cool players. I traveled away from my FLGS this year. Small turn out but a few veterans kept it challenging. Bummer was there was another store in town that ran the tourney as well. If there had only been one we might have seen more players in the same spot. Also another qualifier within 2 hours. Great time.
Seems like GK are the new hotness and IG are taking a back seat in numbers anyway. Wolves, GK, Guard, BA, Vulkan and a touch of DE. Seems the net predictions are on this year.

1st DE
2nd Dualwing (me)
3rd Horde Orks/Bikers
15 players, mostly marines & grey knights
Round 1
Faced off against SW razorspam. Everything went wrong for the first half of the game (I scored my first KP in turn 4), then everything came up milhouse. Game was decided when I destroyed a razorback on the bottom of 6, and the unit inside (njal, the traitor, and a GH squad) broke & ran. Game ended immediately after. Gotta love an 8kp krak missile. 15 bp.
Round 2
Faced off against a beautifully painted BA battleforce list. Tabled her, 24 bp.
Round 3
Faced off against an ork foot list. 160-180ish? As with the first game, things went very poorly for the first 3 rounds, followed by much bloodshed in the last rounds of the game. We ended up within ~200 vp of each other. 11 bp.
DE won with authority, with 67-68 BP, followed by a 3-way tie for 2nd @ 50 (broken by difficulty of schedule).

much smaller turn out from last year, another local shop decided to run it as well bringing in at least 2-3 of our guys as they offered 200 bucks toward travel costs to go to next round for winner(making it almost worth your time to go from AK). Then we also had a shop about an hour away host one taking at least 3-5 of our gamers.
Overall though a good time was had, can't believe i showed up saying "ok IG are gonna be a pain but really mobile shooting armies will be worst for my foot DraigoWing..." then i played Eldar, Dark Eldar, Eldar...

The codex is viable via Deathwing (maybe some Ravenwing).
The problem is the rest of the Codex suffers greatly with LD9 Librarians with junk powers, and overcosted transports.

Yes and no, my friend who was running it did not read the packet and so they did not track VP all day. So he went to the next most indiscriminate thing he could, ala, strength of schedule. So orks had the harder opponents all day and got to move on.

My son and I went to Art of War gaming in Cincinnati for the HB tourney. We were speed bumps as out of 8 players we placed 7th and 8th. We have been playing only a year and IMO 2.5 hours for 2500 points of ORKS = 3 turns each game. I won ( barely ) against the Grey Knights and lost so bad VRS Demons. Since I have never played a Demon army when the guy gave me his list I told him it could be in Russian as it means nothing to me.
My son did very poor with his Dark Angels. As I played him in the last game and he dumped a landraider full of Veterans against a total of 22 nobs I can see how that happened.
The winners of our tourney were Blood Angels With Demons second. The Grey Knights I beat came in third. What I likes most about the games were except for the GK every army was painted well.

Team zero comp swept it, with all three of us present going on to the next round.
I had planned on taking footdar and then my forward scouts told me to expect at least two triple manticore leaf blower lists with hellhouns support and that just didn't sound fun, so I took the boys in black.

While the rules do state that stuff can be undpainted I think in general at least 75% of most armies will be fully painted. I know everyone except a GK player at my event had a fully painted army and the GK player was just missing a couple things.

Site got hacked on Friday, but I got the junk off there within a few hours, updated the site security, software versions, passwords, etc. It'll probably take another week before it gets de-listed from automated browser security warnings (Google warnings, Firefox plug-ins, etc).

Fantastic Games Columbiana, OH. We had 8 people, would've had 10+ but 2 guys showed up on the middle of round 1 and other people had work/drill/not enough points.
1st GK Henchmen w/dread knights(there was some bs involved with this guy but whatever.)
2nd Orks didn't play him but saw lots of stuff with def rollas.
3rd SW Long fangs missile spam
4th GK Purifier spam(me) My first ard boyz! I should've played more aggressively vs the 3rd place winner but I'm still a back up for semi finals
5th CSM I only got 4th by 1 pt bit he and I had a good 1st round duel.
6th DE lot of raiders and fighters, he's a young kid but had a good list.
7th SW Long Fangs the two SW players tied in 1st round it was pretty amusing.
8th BA my buddie's dice were just hating him all day, he was pretty upset.
1 of the guys who didn't make it in time would've played CSM, don't know about his friend.

1st - Blood Angels (with Meph)
2nd - Black Templars (Alpha Strike) [Possibly Dropping from semi-finals]
3rd - Tyranids (Me; Stock Tyrant with Guard, 2x Trygons, 2x Fexes, 4x Zoans, 3x Hive Guard, 50x Genestealers)
[4th - Eldar (Foot list)]
Had a rough round one against the fourth place Eldar player - relying on warp blast with runes of warding up is rough, and fortuned inv saves on the traitor was too much for just one squad of HG. Fun scenario, though.
Didn't have any trouble with marines though; genestealers were as scary as always to watch, especially in the DoW scenario.

Not sure if people know or not ,but i just called empire games(La second round place) and they are taking all your information(name ,where you placed, army .ect) and verifying it . That is how second round is working this year.So everyone who placed should call their location to make sure you dont have any problems the 17th.

I placed 7th with Vanilla Marines. KP mission shot me in the foot with having 30 man ork mobs to kill to get a single KP...
Massacred another Vanilla Marine in 2nd round. Left him with 1 model on the table at the end of the game. Controlled all 5 objectives.
Draw against Space Wolves in round 3. Would have had a minor win if it wasn't for his Wolf Brothers that don't count for Victory Points.
