As far as I know, GW doesn't really pick them. The stores have to lobby trade sales. Maybe one of the store owners in the know can give more details (like Mikhaila).

Wow, did you really just mapquest that to respond to my post? One event in three states, and yet Idaho gets two? A more even spread of events, that's what I want.

Just to add for comparison. There were 27 prelims combined in GA, NC, and SC. Not including the panhandle of FL that would travel to Lawrenceville.

Yeah, I did, because you were complaining for no reason. Sure you might not have one in every place you want it, but ask the Dakotas how they are feeling about their semis locations.
Idaho's locations are 8 hours apart by car. One of them supports Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana. the other supports Idaho, Wyoming and Eastern Oregon.
Atlanta has one. Alabama has one 2.5 hours out of Atlanta. Jacksonville probably covers north FL and south GA. NC/ SC are probably screwed and have to go FL/VA/ GA. If no stores in there area took up the flag for Semis, then that's the store's bad.

No reason? Driving 6+ hours with gas at 4 dollars a gallon sounds like enough reason for me. You realize that the Dakotas had 4 prelims between them right? And it's usually based on density? 27 > 4. Guess how many Montana, E. Oregon, E. Washington and Wyoming had? 6+0+3+1= 10. Plus Idaho's 10. 27 > 20. They still got two.
Jacksonville? There's not one in Jacksonville. Orlando and Miami.

My bad, misread Florida.
Sorry about it then, but I guess you'll miss the free tournament. :( Either that or get a hold of a store that is central to your area and have them get a hold of trade sales to make a case for having Semis.

The semis are picked by the same people that run every aspect of hardboys: the North American Trade team.
Locations are chosen based on geography, volume of business, size of store, and many other factors.

Yup. I game at the Post Falls Idaho store. The have a huge space, more then enough terrain and boards for 40 people, and ability to expand to 50+ with some outlay. I doubt many stores in metro areas can do that easily, nor have the volumn of a store like Gh when competing with the bunkers and GW stores.
Also they had a great turn out at last years semi's, 30-40 if I recall (not sure though, I was getting married that day lol). and not only USA but Canadians as well, who had 8-12 hour drives in some cases.
5442
Post by: Eldanar
My choices last year were a 3 hour drive east or a 3 hour drive north. This year I'll get to play in the same store I qualified in, which is about 30 minutes away for me. (The store in Alabama is East-Northeast of Birmingham, and is actually only about 1.5 hours away from Atlanta...at least the western side of Atlanta.)
A lot of it boils down as well to what stores want to actually host this thing. It is a lot of intense gaming. I have never seen a lot of product sold at these events, due to the emphasis on gaming. Some stores may not want to displace their regulars, who are possibly more interested in Clix, FOW, card games, etc. And the store needs to be able to accomodate 20+ players. If a FLGS only holds 6 tables, then it cannot really accomodate the number of people that might potentially want to show up at a semi-final. A lot of smaller stores might be willing, but just too small; and a lot of larger stores may think it is too much of a hassle.
As Pollonius suggested, there are a lot of factors that go into this than just GW arbitrarily awarding or penalizing certain geographic areas.

I was surprised there was no location in NC or SC. In NC, there are 3 shops within 1 1/2 hours of each other than can host 30+ person event. One of the shops ran a GT this year alone. NC had the semi finals locations for at least the past 2 years.
Oh well. At least there's the NOVA and 11th Company event coming up for us in the South.

Darn you and your multi-acre store!! Only have room now for about 40 comfortably, I'd have to re-configure all the 8 footers to 6 foot tables to fit 50. And I'm too lazy to that except for a multi day GT
But we'll have free lunch for everyone. Not sure if it'll be Chili dogs or steak sandwhiches. Maybe both.

They should have collected your email address at the event--this address needs to be associated with an account on the GW website with your name and contact information. Last year they didn't even check certificates at the location I went to, though many of us had them. I think they send a list of all of the qualifying players to the stores.

No. The NorCal location (Legends) is a nice enough store, but they're a lot smaller than Great Escape Games (in Sacramento), who has held the event in the past.
While Legends is a lot more convenient for me this year, it's going to be a bit rougher on the Nevada crowd who usually come down.

The Oregon location is a relatively small store that can do, at most, 10-12 tables. They are actually renting a location and bringing in tables and terrain (allegedly). I imagine the smaller stores who got approved will go this route.

GW continues to make no sense.. There should be no spreading around semi locations every year. The stores with the largest facilities, the best terrain and most convenient location should always host the event. Seeing as we (Great Escape Games in Sacramento) are hosting the West Coast Finals, I assume they wanted to spread things out a bit by giving the second round to the store in Cupertino. Thats about 2 hours from us, so the Reno players will have to drive 3-4 hours to play and its an even longer drive for the guys in Medford/Grants Pass.
I think Legends can hold 35-40 tables? Its too bad that a state with as large as and with as many players as California (and im including Reno and Vegas players in that) only gets 2 locations. Im sure some people won't be able to attend due to distance.

Legends has okay space; I just don't know where they're going to get enough terrain.
Still better than the Fantasy 'Ard Boyz, though.

I'm actually trying to figure out how Game Empire Pasadena will be able to handle the people from all of the prelims in socal. If i remember correctly, it only has about ten tables. GMI, where it was held in the past has 30.
Game Empire Pasadena can host an event of up to 40 people if required in its old store. By the time the Semis come around GE will have moved 4 blocks down to their new store location which is 2.5x the size of the current location so fitting in the players won't be a problem. GEP has also hosted the Semis two other years and one of those years they opened up the empty store next door to add tables, they have always made it work there comfortably plus they have enough terrain to run a GT. Shouldn't be a problem.

we have fifteen tables now, but we're going to be holding the semis in our new location that has 3000 square feet of gaming space. It should be enough. Fingers Crossed!

So let me get this correct we have to pick the location and call them to see where we are playing? I won in upstate NY I can have a 3 hour trip to western NY and a 3 hour trip to MASS to play or a 3 hour trip to NYC to play so I get to pick? is that the deal?

Yes, but I'd call and reserve at one or the other. The Strat in NYC has room for probably 20 people? Not sure how much the others hold. In Philly we are 26/40 spots filled. Most locations can probably add a couple of tables if they get too many people signing up, but won't be able to do anything if unregistered folks show up the day of the event.

Anyone noticed they changed the semis location file. Several venues seem to be missing. I don't know if this is a mistake on their part or if they boycott canada from the semis.
Thoughts?

There were some locations (like the MN one) that were incorrectly identified and they were waiting to get final confirmation on the new sites.

If it was anywhere else I wouldn't be so amped to go, but I always like a good trip down to the cities.

They really couldn't make it anywhere but the cities...otherwise the gap between western semis locations and the central ones would be too absurd...I hope we get a solidly large group down there

Same. I definitely like going up against fresh opponents! When I checked in on Monday I was the 25th to sign up...and we still have roughly three and a half weeks for pre-regs, should be a good crowd.

They have space for in the range of 50 people if we take the whole floor. It will be a doozy of a day

Hi all, I have a bit of an update for all of you who will be attending the Semi-finals Dragons Keep in Provo Utah. As it turns out, September 17th is the day of the biggest football game in the state,The Holy war. This is the annual showdown between the two top football programs in the state; the Mormon Church owned Brigham Young University (BYU) and the State owned University of Utah (UofU or The U) This year the game will be taking place at Brigham Young in Provo and the stadium is only about a mile away from Dragons Keep. The game starts at 7:00pm local time, so traffic won't be a problem in the morning, but after the tournament it might be. Here are a few tips for those of you that are not from around here.
1)Avoid University Avenue and University Parkway as much as possible. This will be a little difficult as Dragons Keep is located on University Ave, but just stay off of it as much as possible.
2) Avoid I-15 as much as possible!!!! The traffic on I-15 is bad on the best of days because of construction. On a normal BYU game day it will be bad, on this game day it will be TERRIBLE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, research alternate routs if you can and use a GPS if possible.
3) as far as food goes, Dragons keep is located very close (within walking distance) of many good places to eat. shouldn't be a problem.
4) Provo is MORMONVILLE. Places to get an alcoholic beverage may be hard to come by.
5) No matter what Brigham Young fans tell you, Utah fans are great people.
I hope the tournament goes well. I don't play 40k, but I might drop in just for the heck of it. I'm not going to the game, but I'll be watching it on TV. Good luck to you all. If you have any other questions about how to make your stay in provo an enjoyable one, just shoot me a PM.
